S.O.S.27,

Thanks for saving me.

I stopped short of saying I want to see Giambi back. I can live with the lack of range, the clogging up of the basepaths, and low batting average in return for his presence, OBP, underrated soft hands around the bag, and presence. It is pretty painful though to watch when he has to make a throw or chooses not to like he did the other night. I think they need to see what they have in Miranda in September. If you could even do a Miranda/Duncan platoon if Miranda can hit RH major league pitching, I'd be ok with that. Its a big jump from AAA and the majors though and who knows what he's really capable of.

In a vaccum, I'd say its a good idea to replace Giambi. However, if you let Abreau leave and trade Matsui or Damon, its hard to accept additional decline in offense at 1B and I don't know how you'd replace his offense at 1B unless you did a deal for Tex or some other longer term 1B commitment. As I said, I don't think that's a good idea given Posada and Jeter eventually needing to transition to 1B or DH and Monteiro bigging a big time bat prospect who might not profile as a C in a few years. They'll need to weigh options at 1B. I'm just not automatically saying there's a better one than Giambi for one more year.

I agree CC is probably a long shot. Not that I don't think Hank and Cashman would back up a truck full of cash for him. He's going to have lots of suitors though and it seems he prefers the NL and West Coast. Lowe would be a nice pick-up as long as it was short term if they don't bring back Mussina AND Pettite. With the new stadium though, I expect both to be back. Depending on the money involved, you could argue that a Lowe signing would make more sense than a Burnett signing even if they can't convince CC or Sheets to come to NY. I somewhat expect that someone will be willing to give more years and $ to Burnett than he's proven that he's worth.

SoS27,

you don't think he's done at short anytime soon? that won't happen....Ripken played short longer into his career then 3rd, comparatively speaking, why would you put Jeter at 1st even if short is not in the cards for him anymore? what a waste!

BG,
Dont want to leave your well thought out post hangin. I agree with most of what you said accept for Giambi. He isnt a first baseman and i dont care if we have to put Miranda,Posada or alphabet there. We need to keep him off this team next year. He will end up taking first with one hand tied behind his back. I would go after a Dejesus till Ajax is ready and pick up a Lowe for the bottom of the staff and a Sheets for the top. Dont think we will land C.C.
We need to get younger and hungrier next year. BTW. Jeter has more range this year than last. I doubt he will accept going to center. I see him playing first when hes done at short.

while it is true girardi cannot play the game for his guys, he is directly responsible for the way they play. is this miserable season all on him? I think not. However I don't believe I have ever seen a team so lack lustre in my lifetime. To many lineups, and failure to change the lineup where he should have. Giambi has no business hitting in the 5 spot. Is that the answer likely not but is it a part, yes in my opinion it is a part. I'm beginning to believe his players don't believe in him. why i don't know, but something is wrong and I don't believe its the talent or lack there of. Its deeper than talent.

I think Jeter and Kim Jones have a real fondness for each other. I don't know if the feelings on either side go any deeper than that, but Jeter does like to give her a hard time in a joking way. I think it's kind of cute.

But she does ask some dumbass questions!

I agree with much of what SJ44 said. Rather than repeat all he said though, I'll draw my distinctions. I think the Yankees have to offer Abreau arbitration and I don't think he accepts. Like SJ44, there's no way I'd offer a multiyear deal. The team needs to get younger, especially in the OF. That said, Abreau is our most productive OF and the one you worry least about health wise. He's always been a 150 game/year player for his whole career. Where SJ44 seems to prefer that Abreau decline, I hope he doesn't. Like SJ44, I think they need to trade one of Matsui or Damon in an effort to get younger. I'd prefer it to be Matsui who I view to be in a steeper decline but its going to depend on the relative return you'd get for either. I find myself taking the long view and somewhat rooting against the team now. I think every day and week that they don't throw in the towel is a lost opportunity to see what they have for next year in Gardner, Miranda, Aceves and others. In particular, I'm wondering if Gardner could be a stopgap in CF until Jackson is ready. If not, they need to acquire someone, even if its a low cost journeyman/speedster that will provide good defense for a year.

There are a lot of decisions to make in the offseason. I think they need to go hard after another top pitcher. I'd greatly prefer CC but if not him then Sheets or Burnett. I haven't given up on Hughes, but I think they may have to consider trading him for some major league ready, top OF prospect. Jackson isn't ready yet and he's just one guy anyway. They need to get younger in the OF. If they sign a CC, I think they can afford to do so and It would be a trade that would help both teams similar to the Reds-Rangers deal of last spring. The idea of moving Jeter to the OF is intriguing, but I just don't expect it to happen.

Unlike SJ44, I would give serious consideration to bringing Giambi back if he is willing to take a steep paycut and a one year deal. Yes, they need to get younger and yes, you can't commit to him long term. However, they really need to get younger at the skill positions more than at 1B. I also think Texeira is not an option. You need 1B open in a few years for Posada or Jeter or Monteiro. If you are looking for a one year, stop gap solution, I think you could do a lot worse than Giambi. That's not to say he'll be back. I just wouldn't be so quick to write off the possibility.

Finally, even though I agree with most of what SJ44 would tell Cashman to do. I don't think its quite as dire as he lays it out. This team is still within 6 games of the wild card and that's having lost Posada and Matsui for most of the year along with either losing or getting ineffective performance from 4/6ths of the starting rotation including the starters we were counting onto be our Ace and 3rd starter. Don't forget -- Joba wasn't even in the rotation at the start of the year. I think most of us thought there was some pitching depth even though there were a couple of rookies in the rotation. Its really surprising given the injuries, Cano's and Jeter's seasons, and the ineffectiveness of A-Rod in the clutch that this team is as competitive as it is. The team will be better next year. Count on it. And damn it, this thread is probably dead already. Why do I always make long replys after threads are dead?

Haha I love it when Jeter makes fun of Kim Jones.

But while we're on this big Moose kick - he is by far the best at "exposing" dumb reporters. Did anyone catch the recent Q&A Yahoo Sports' "Answer Man" column did with him? At one point, the reporter asked something like "You managed to finish college in 3 yrs, did you drink a single beer during that time?" Moose's answer? "Um, yes, I did drink a single beer." Haha.
