Steinbrenner: “They sucked”

Peter Abraham
August
28

On his way out of the Stadium tonight, Hank Steinbrenner was blunt.

“All I can think about is this game at this point. We’ll see what happens tomorrow, but the bottom line is they sucked,” he said.

    Right on Hank

  2. Dillon

Talk is cheap, do something about it!

  3. DCYanks

I’d say that’s an accurate assessment of things. The fat lady’s definitely singing…

  4. Bronx Jeers

Great, now Hank has to steal from Arods postgame playbook.

  5. Yoooo

I’d like it better if he said “WE sucked” but at the very least, he put it bluntly clear.

  6. DFox

Well Girardi wasn’t going to say it, at least it got said. Maybe they’ll have some pride and won’t enjoy being belittled by the owner.

  7. they are sucked

Agree with litte stein.Yankees this season is done.

  8. NYY Hunter

Hughes doesn’t throw as hard as he did with Trenton, but he still looked very good tonight. He was 91-92 tonight and sat there most of the night but had very nice deception. I guess thats the velocity he sits in. Curve looked filthy, Buffalo had no chance. Change and Slider didn’t look very good, didn’t throw them for strikes tonight– he is going to have to perfect the change if he wants to take the next step but he is still young. Mixed in a couple of cutters. The kid just knows how to pitch and is very mature.

Looks like the Yanks tried to make him more of a economical pitcher and tried to cut down on his strikeouts. Don’t know if long term that is a good idea and may hinder him from being an ace, but if he pitches like he did tonight he will have a long career in the middle of a rotation– one of those guys who is in the majors until they are 40 because they know how to pitch.

Hughes’ demise was greatly exaggerated. He may not be the Mark Prior-phenom he was in Trenton (but after 2 injuries that lost 2 years of development, new mechanics, a new pitch etc. you can’t reasonably expect him to be the same), but he is still going to be a very good pitcher. The key is for him to master the change. That should be his focus.

  9. Showatler '09

Time for Hank to put his money where his mouth is. Atleast he is upset and isin’t sugarcoating anything.

  10. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    Love the bluntness.

Ok Hank, now do something about it.

  11. Nick in SF

How is it that Girardi allows sugarcoating in the clubhouse but no actual sugar???

  12. S.A.-Can the Yanks continue winning series? Please? This offense is still offensive.

Hank telling it like it is.

  13. Bronx Jeers

“How is it that Girardi allows sugarcoating in the clubhouse but no actual sugar???”

Reason # 214 that CC is not coming.

  14. Dr. J

Hank is a blow-hard, but hes so entertaining. I can’t help it. I eagerly await each quote of his.

  15. For $13 I'll be a Macadamia Nut

What the heck is Hank supposed to do at this point of the season? Other than firing Girardi or Cashman, what is he supposed to do? Lock the doors and close the stadium now?

  16. Tank

Hank should tell the team refuse to take the field like the opponents of that kid who threw too hard for little league.

  17. TFB

    It’s ohva.

  18. G. Love

    Amen Hank.

  19. Bronx Jeers

“Hank should tell the team refuse to take the field like the opponents of that kid who threw too hard for little league.”

Haven’t they kind of been doing that this whole season?

  20. CaptainsCorner

Hank is lucky he lives in Florida and doesn’t have to watch more of this garbage in person. He would probably get drunk at every game if he had to be there. His comments are entertaining but can he stop with his BS comments of “There is going to be a lot going on this offseason,” Steinbrenner said. “I promise you that.” Talk about next season when this season is officially over…That is in about a week not now. What are these big moves?!! An offer to Sabathia? He talked and talked about Santana last year and never did anything. Hank’s comments are probably just his way of saying everyone continue to buy your tickets we have a new ballpark and we need the money.

  21. Harry Doyle

Haven’t we learned that spending big money on free agents does not bring a title? CC would be wise, but adding Tex to clog up first for 7 years like Giambi and Sheets to get hurt like Pavano is not the answer

  22. hank hal

Hank—- show us you love us by getting us CC, Tex, Manny, and Sheets in the offseason.

  23. Dee

I saw Hank and Hal on baseball tonight. They looked disgusted.

Maybe the players all went hiding not from the reporters, but from the bosses. I kind of wished they had marched into that locker room and ripped them a new one. Or at least demand a refund.

  24. ralphrc

Right Hank. Now don’t re-sign Cashman or any of your old free agents, fire Girardi who has no repect from the players who folded up their tents, get rid of one of the worst coaching staffs in the history of baseball, and trade Cano, a loser, and Hughes for a package of talented youngsters who actually hustle and want to win. Then maybe you’ll have somthing in a couple of years instead of overpaid, declining and disinterested old men who should actually be invited to Oldtimers’ Day next year.

  25. george

Hank knows how to get to Yankee Stadium?

  26. hank hal

    George,

Hal made sure to put a map by Hank’s alarm clock so he wouldn’t get lost. He paid Howard Rubinstein to read it to him, however.

  27. Yankees Ben

I really don’t get what you guy’s want Girardi to say, of course he says tommorrow is an other game, do you want him to say the season is over??

We all hate loosing, and even more the the yanks are playing these days (or this whole season) but you stil have to stay on a positive note untill its actually over.

  28. E-Man

    Hank, you suck too.

Thanks for doing nothing but giving the press quotes.

  29. Yankees Ben

YOu gotta love hank, the second game this season in the stadium and he opens his big mouth…..

  30. Guiseppe Franco

I understand the media’s inclination to seek Hank Steinbrenner for his usual colorful (or moronic, if you ask me) quotes – but Yankee fans need to understand that Hank really doesn’t run this team.

It’s Hal and Cashman who run the team.

Tonight’s game was just the second game all season in which Hank attended at the Stadium.

Hank never stepped foot in NY during the All Star festivities, which is especially odd when you consider that his own father was being honored before the game.

Hal was there and rode in the golf cart with him around the field.

Hank did not attend the Virginia Tech charity game.

    Hal did.

Hank did not attend the Bobby Murcer memorial services.

    Hal did.

Hank also wanted Santana and it didn’t happen.

Hank wanted Joba in the rotation back in April and that didn’t happen until June as was planned all along.

Do we really need anymore evidence that Hank happens to be an owner in job description and last name only and that he’s little more than a media hound who really doesn’t make any of the final decisions regarding this team?

  31. dan 771

breaking news – ian kennedy watched the game from the scranton clubhouse and had these comments

“it’s not a big deal, its just a game”, said kennedy.

“im not too upset, i thought they played well. they just got a couple of unlucky breaks, a lot of balls could have been caught and a lot of their hits could have found holes”

“we are in a fine position. we can still in the world series thats why im not worried about this loss. i know i can pitch at this level” concluded kennedy.

  32. you gotta have faith

he said that there are going to be a lot of changes this offseason, actions speak louder than words my friend.

if these “players” aren’t going to at least fight for a play off spot maybe they would at least fight for their multi million dollar jobs.

  33. Dee

Yankees Ben, yeah I take issue with Hank never bothering to show up too. Did you hear the first game he was here he was watching the Preakness or was it the Belmont Stakes the whole time on the owner’s box TV?

But anyway, he still has every right to say they suck. Fact is they do suck and Hank signs their checks. I much prefer his honesty than Girardi’s “it is what it is”.

  34. Forntoso

So what exactly does Hank do? He has no power and does not attend any team functions and is not involved in the baseball operations.

Are they paying him just to talk to the media? Why was he even assigned power? It’s not like Hank was lobbying for this job, he was on a horse farm for 20 years and rejected it numerous times.

He has to have some power, right? I mean, why else did he agree to take this job that he had no interest in for 2 decades?

  35. Al from BK(Calsvin Pace=Tom Brady's worst nightmare.)

    Lol.

I’ll do you one better I can predict tomorrows post-game comments 16 hours in advance.

Girardi- This is a tough one, our guys fought the good fight and in this game sometimes that isn’t good enough. Lester is a heck of a pitcher with many great years ahead of him and we gotta tip our collective cap.

  36. Bronx Jeers

I’m thinking they should start prepping the cryogenic freezer for the old man about now.

    George > Hank

    Hal > Hank

scary homeless guy that lurks on my corner > Hank

  37. Al from BK(Calsvin Pace=Tom Brady's worst nightmare.)

Hughes doesn’t need to be an Ace, thats Joba’s role. His K’s will come with age and experience.

  38. Nick in SF

Well, during the last off-season I recall a quote from Hank in which he said “I’m the one in the big chair now.”

So I guess his role is to be a seat warmer?

  39. JJNJ

If Hank bothered to show up to games, maybe I’d care what he has to say.

  40. Yankees Ben

Dee, absolutley right they suck big time, but what do you want Girardi to say?

  41. Dr. J

Hal will probably make some delusional comments tomorrow, Girardi-like comments talking about how he still believes, is confident etc.

Atleast Hank sees the light and has seen it for the last few weeks. Too bad he has no power otherwise I might be optimistic about next season.

  42. Hudson

Thanks, Hank, for finally confirming what Sox fans have been chanting for years.

  43. Al from BK(Calvin Pace=Tom Brady's worst nightmare.)

Hanks pull in the organization is very weak, thats why the only power he has is to complain to the media drones.

  44. george

please Joe G., play Giambi against Lester. put in Ransom while the season has a faint pulse.

    Lester against lefties:
    .227 .274 .318

    against righties:
    .281 .343 .414

i’m cool w/Cano, Damon, Abreu, Matsui. they tend to hit lefties well ‘cuz they aren’t obsessed with pulling like the Big G(roundout). plus Cano, Damon, Abreu have hit him, though admittedly it’s a small sample size.

  45. mark007

and the giants lose all of their pass rush from last year, so there goes my football season too

    atleast we have the knicks

  46. Al from BK(Calvin Pace=Tom Brady's worst nightmare.)

“and the giants lose all of their pass rush from last year, so there goes my football season too

    atleast we have the knicks”

Whats with the doom and gloom man, you are the champs! Justin Tuck is still a beast, I cringed when he sacked my QB last week. The Knicks are going to be painful until at least 2010.

  47. mel

Sports guy on the radio just asked Girardi, “So what went wrong tonight? How’d it spiral out of control so fast? Are there any changes that can be made in order to salvage the season?”

Girardi, “Obviously, we’re not happy we lost. Obviously, you have to play the games, execute. Ah, fudge. Just go to the LoHud blog. They know more than we do. Obviously.”

  48. Yankees Ben

    mel you heard that too?..

  49. AJ Yanks

    Favre to Keller, all winter.

  50. Al from BK(Calvin Pace=Tom Brady's worst nightmare.)

    “Favre to Keller, all winter.”

    Keller=Kellen Winslow.

  51. mel

    Yankee Ben,

    Yes! Obviously…

  52. Brandon (There is no more doubt the true captain of this team is Jorge Posada )

I heard it, apparently GI Joe reads Lohud

How about seperating that 4 and hitter death trap. Oh Hank I bet you don’t have the brass to DFA Giambi.

  53. Brandon (There is no more doubt the true captain of this team is Jorge Posada )

    or Pudge

  54. Pepitone

“what do you want Girardi to say?”

    How’s this –

“You know what, I will take full responsibility for this season’s failures. I ‘m the manager and I failed in my responsibility to have this team ready to play baseball day in and day out. That being said, I say this to everybody presently on this team, if you are going to play for the New York Yankees next year, you better be prepared to work hard this off-season and come in next Spring ready to play ball. I will guarantee you that anyone who does not want to work hard in preparation for next year might as well not show up, because he won’t play for me.”

  55. mel

    Brandon,

They’re too far out. They won’t embarrass any vets.

  56. Al from BK(Calvin Pace=Tom Brady's worst nightmare.)

How exciting Joe mentioned us!!! Now I feel like my countless hours of bellyaching were not in vane.

  57. Tank

mark, I don’t know how you can say that. Giants won the SB by overcoming the odds. They are a mentally tough team that thrived on adversity— they have unbelievable resiliency and chemistry. They’ll find a way to respond with our Strahan/Osi. Spagnueolo is a genius, lets see what he can do.

They are the Anti-Yankees in that regard— Giants thrived in pressure situations and had Chemistry, heart, leadership, character etc. all the qualities of a champion that the Yankees lack. Giants had a blue collar team who scratched and clawed for everything and made the most out of their abilities— we have a bunch of all-stars who are mental-midgets and crack at the first sign of pressure and underachieve year after year and waste their talents.

  58. Dr. J

Wait… Joe mentioned the LoHud blogs? Where?

  59. Yankees Ben

Guys, this is the Farnsworth curse, we really mistreated him after he gave away his heart this season.

  60. Yankees Ben

Pepitone this is what he can say on october 1st, not now when they still might have some miracle…

  61. mel

The Yankees haven’t sucked for years and years to stockpile top 5 picks, so they rely (too much) on veterans who choose to come to the Yankees. They can’t afford the backlash that would inevitably come with kicking dog poo to the curbside.

  62. mel

    Dr. J,

Was a joke. Everyone was nice enough to play along.

  63. wolf man (2008 is over)

tony pena should have been the manager. a guy with experience who knows hwo to handle a clubhouse and was familiar with the guys.

they would have played hard for pena. he was manager of the year with an awful royals team

  64. mel

    Dr J,

BUT, apparently Michael Kay mentioned Pete in the broadcast tonight.

We’d better talk nicely about him. No more Kay jokes. :(

  65. harrs44

Your opinion of Hank aside, at least he called this sorry team out for its performance, unlike the REAL Clueless Joe. Injuries or not, their performance is inexcusable. And no, I’m not some Pollyannish fan who thinks it’s the Yankees’ birthright to go to the playoffs. This lineup is good enough to give them a fighting chance. And night after night, they fail. Better luck next year, fellas.

  66. Nick in SF

Joe G, let the guys have candy and ice cream!

I suggest Moose Bars, they’re for charity!

Listen to me now, thank me later!

  67. Al from BK(Calvin Pace=Tom Brady's worst nightmare.)

Adios, I’m out til tomorrows game thread. I can guarantee if nothing else it will be fun to read.

  68. Brandon (There is no more doubt the true captain of this team is Jorge Posada )

    Brandon,

They’re too far out. They won’t embarrass any vets.

What the f*** do I care about embarrassing vets they’ve embarrassed thierselves.

  69. wolf man (2008 is over)

britton did a fantastic job out of the pen tonight.

  70. mel

    Brandon,

Like I said, we rely on vets because we haven’t sucked and sucked like Tampa has. No vet worth his contract is going to come here if they see us pushing vets out of their wheelchairs.

  71. AJ YANKS

Stephon Marbury is going to have a break-out year for D’Antoni.

  72. Brandon (There is no more doubt the true captain of this team is Jorge Posada )

Stephon Marbury is going to have a break-out year for D’Antoni.

    He’ll quit on him too.

  73. harrs44

Shut down Joba and Hughes for the season, and make Pavano pitch every other day. He owes us, anyway.

  74. hank hal

I am more interested in milb.com than I am the YES Network on game nights.

  75. Tank

This team needs an Antonio Pierce.

It’s funny how Hal tells Jeter to be the captain and try and get through to his teammates and then nothing happens, the same lifeless baseball manifests itself night after night.

  76. BB

Yankees has a lot of momey, but always pay it on the wrong place.Cashman is short of insight and couldn’t help Yankees.
He always waste a great quantity of money, but couldn’t gain the best players. It’s time to think about rebuild for next year.First of all,Yankees should fire Cashman, because he isn’t a good GM.In the case of coaches, they should be adjust and make a replacement.
I think the 2009 start can be fine just(consider age,attitude,money,value,contribution,talent,…..)
    CC
    Wang
    Joba
    Damon
    Bobby
    Nady
    Mo
    Molina

    As for others
    Mussina(good but old)
    Pettite(good but decline)
    IPK(trade him)
    Huges(not ready on MLB)(always injury)
Ponson(not good but better than Rasner,Carl,IPK and Huges)
Rasner(not fit to be a start)
    Carl(bye bye)
    Jeter(old and decline)
A-Rod(need to see the doctor to help him to face pressure)
    Giambi(bye bye)
    Matsui(old and a little decline)
    Posoda(old and decline)(just a usual catcher)(overpay)(trade)
    I-Rod(bye bye)
    Cano(young but often loose)(decline)(overpay)(trade)
    Melky(trade)

To tell the true,Redsox has a better eyesight to train and seek for good players and cost fewer momey than Yankees.
    Try to compare:
    Cano v.s. Youkilis
    Melky v.s. Pderoia or Ellsbury
    Hughes v.s. Leser
    Igawa v.s. Matsuzaka
Even Buchholz is better than IPK and Hghes, including his good attitude after game.
    Should we fire cashman?YES

  77. RockinDaBronx

Hank , once again shows us how he is an infantile imbecile

  78. mel

    hank hal,

Was there a Scranton game tonight? I checked Jennings blog (only became interested lately), but he only talked about the Scranton all-star snubs (as in nobody made it/4 for Pawtucket).

  79. hank hal

Yeah surprisingly Jennings didn’t make an entry tonight about the game… odd considering Hughes was pitching and he would get a ton of hits.

    I’m sure he’ll have a report tomorrow.

  80. Yankees Ben

    hank hal,
Jenninngs said he’s not with the team now so he won’t post anything he’ll be back for the next series.

  81. nibble not

What’s disheartening is that the last two games (THE season) weren’t even close. A playoff birth was up to the Yanks ’til then. Now it will take not only an unlikely amount of winning, but also an unlikely amount of losing by the front runner (See ‘07 Phillies).

  82. gianthinker

The Yankees should trade for Willy Taveras who was put on waivers today. He’s be under control through next season and could solidify the CF position. Plus he’s still young.

  83. Bob Merc-The Shift

I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY miss Billy Martin. Enough said.

  84. JJNJ

I heard Kay mention Pete tonight too… an article he wrote about Posada. Good stuff :)

  85. ITALIANO

The NY POST is reporting that Carl Pavano has been placed on waivers and could be moved if the Yankees find a team…..

  86. Mark

Hank tells it like it is! To those who say he should put his money where his mouth is, $210m isn’t enough?

  87. Rick (Columbus)

    Yes Hank!
    Now do something about it.

  88. Jim in CT

Those of you wanting Hank to seize control of the franchise — you’ll be so, so sorry if he does. He reminds me a lot more of Marge Schott than his old man. Heart of a fan, mind of an squirrel. Unbelievable that this was his SECOND game? His other priorities are… what, exactly? It’s not like he couldn’t get off from work or anything. Whether Cash or Girardi stay or go is actually a small decision compared to whether Hank actually gets to run the show here.

  89. the long island yankee

don’t we start gardenar tonight.give cody a day at first,i know he is a part time player and a 27 yr old aaa player. but he’ll try.bring up hughes to start for ponson and wright to start for rasner.waive giambi and play miranda,i know he has problems with lefties.lets use this last month wisely.if they are no going to keep abreu next year wavier kim too.LET THE KIDS PLAY.a-stats will hit 15 meaningless homers in sept.

  90. the long island yankee

i wbring in would also bring in buck and get stick more involved.all the coaches can go.giradi will probably stay but if he does his coaches should be gone.

  91. fuhgoobagaz

Hmmm, something is very different with this team than the past dozen or so years… I wonder what the biggest change was from those years.

  92. randy l

“This marked only the second home game Steinbrenner has attended this season, and he expressed his extreme displeasure in what he witnessed during a brief interview on his way out. ”

    absentee ownership never works.

as the immortal woody allen says” 80 % of success is showing up”.

    hank doesn’t show up.

hank steinbrenner is the de facto owner of the team because his father’s brain is just not functioning that well anymore.

if you want proof that george’s brain is not functioning, the proof is that hank is running the yankees.

if george had his wits about him, hank would be with running george’s stables. and supervising shoveling horse crap instead of spouting it after watching only his second game at yankee stadium

this team is in total disarray.
no one at the top was even trying this year.

the yankees could have gotten byrd. they were ahead of them in the waiver process.

    they chose to pass.

just like hank steinbrenner chose to pass on putting any time into running this team.

    what a poser.

  93. TurnTwo

“the yankees could have gotten byrd. they were ahead of them in the waiver process.”

ah yes. if the yankees just put in the Paul Byrd claim, EVERYTHING would have been different.

  94. fuhgoobagaz

At least the Yankees got smart and rid themselves of Torre and put in a brilliant manager who tells it like it is.

  95. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter and also believe Arod will start to hit.

We may be facing the reality that the real straw that stirred the drink was the healthy, fesity, mouthy, compassionate, and oh-so-fan-oriented version of George Steinbrenner. God bless the man, it is hardly his fault he had health issues that forced him to pass on the torch.

  96. Betsy

NYYHunter, thanks for the recap, but I am not ready to judge Phil as a #3 or #4 pitcher. That is reach, IMO, for a kid with his ability and who has just 22. I understand trying to make a pitcher more economical, but the Yankees should not be trying to take away his strengths……..if he naturally misses bats with his stuff, then they should not tinker with that. He did have 7 K’s last night. Phil’s problem, I think, is that he tends to throw a ton of pitches…….but I don’t necessarily think that has to do with the amount of K’s he has (he’s not a pure power pitcher anyway), just with the fact that he struggles early (like so many pitchers) and sometimes has a hard time putting hitters away).

  97. trisha - I am a Sidney supporter and also believe Arod will start to hit.

“ah yes. if the yankees just put in the Paul Byrd claim, EVERYTHING would have been different.”

I’m with you Two. Obviously there isn’t any one thing that would stop the leak in the ship because as soon as you point to it, you turn around to find another leak sprung. You patch that one and for a while it looks like the patch is going to hold and another leak has sprung somewhere else. And so on and so on.

I said a while ago that I have no real answers but oh so many questions.

About Girardi – I was someone who was thrilled to have gotten him and was happy to be rid of Torre. I am still happy to be rid of Torre. I will admit that I am disappointed in Girardi. I too thought he would bring a lot of fire and passion that this team needs. He may have passion but he has definitely lacked in the fire department. At least that’s what I wanted to see from our manager. And more tinkering with the lineup. (I know that’s not a popular topic with everyone since there are people here who felt he did too much of it.)

  98. randy l

    “they sucked”?

    hey hank

    don’t you mean “we sucked”.

    “they sucked” ?
    what the hell is that?

oh , i get it. you don’t really know them so the yankees are “they” to you.

you better keep the estate lawyers away from george because in a moment of clarity he just might disown you .

  99. Betsy

Al, “Hughes doesn’t need to be an ace, that’s Joba’s role”? When has MLB ever set a limit on how many aces a team can have? Just because Joba is a pure power pitcher and looks like a potential ace means nothing when it comes to Phil and his potential. Fans want immediate success and if it doesn’t happen (even though Phil pitched quite well last year for a 21 year old in the AL East and pitched great in the ALDS), then they stick a label on him. If people want to judge Phil a #3 or they want to decide he does not have the ability anymore (I hardly think his ability just disappeared in a year and a half), that’s their right, but I think it’s silly and I come to the conclusion that Yankee fans don’t deserve to have young players to root for. I think Austin Jackson should stay in the minors and never be called up to NY, in 2010 or whenever, because the second he struggles, he will be ripped apart. Yankee fans have no patience for young players – kids must perform like 10 year all-stars with no room for error

Hank and Hal have every right to be disgusted. It’s one thing not to make the playoffs, but it’s another to look like you’ve quit and to be playing with your heads up your behind. I like Girardi a lot personally, and he’d done a good job for most of the year, but it is an indictment of him that he hasn’t been able to get the Yankees to put forth a representative effort (that doesn’t mean necessarily making the playoffs, just playing with some spirit and heart). That is a manager’s job. I certainly agree that the majority of the blame goes to the players, though. One more thing – can Joe PLEASE move Giambi out of the 5th spot? Has he taken stupid pills for the last month?

  101. randy l

“ah yes. if the yankees just put in the Paul Byrd claim, EVERYTHING would have been different.”

yeah, trying all the time even on the smallest things has nothing to do with success.

buccholz fizzles and wakefiled disabled so the red sox get byrd. drew goes on disabled list so the red sox get kotsay.

you want to know why theo, youkillis, and pedroia are so annoying to yankee fans?

    they try all the time.

that’s really annoying in the opposition.

hank, hal, and cashman should try it sometime.

  102. TurnTwo

    “they try all the time.

that’s really annoying in the opposition.

hank, hal, and cashman should try it sometime.”

i guess we have really short memories.

that Nady/Marte deal, and the Pudge trade… that didnt actually happen?

yeah, Cashman and the Steinbrenners are asleep at the wheel!

  103. jennifer

The Yankees lost their starting catcher for most of the season, name one team that is on the way to the playoffs that lost their catcher for the ENTIRE season.

The Yankees are on their way to scoring 200 less runs than last year!

The Yankees have scored 3 runs or less in almost 60 games!!

The least amount of runs they scored in the Joe Torre era was 804 runs.

They’ve only scored 638 runs this year!!!

What manager could have done better?

  104. fuhgoobagaz

A leader gets the most out of those he is leading.

If this is the most then how do you explain the last decade?

  105. randy l

“that Nady/Marte deal, and the Pudge trade… that didnt actually happen?
yeah, Cashman and the Steinbrenners are asleep at the wheel!”

yeah changing starting catchers at the end of a season is really an astute baseball move when the one you have knows the pitchers and is doing a good job.

nady /marte was excellent.what did they do ?shoot thei wad. all done. that’s it.
hiw about not quitting untill you cross the finish line?

i said it in the beginning. hank is a baseball lightweight who is in charge because his father owns the team and is mentally disabled which explains hank being given the reins to the team. nespotism at it’s worst.

people on this blog spend more time on the yankees than hank does.

john henry is putting a whooping on the steinbrenner kids.

  106. bubba

Could we still make a waiver wire deal and dump 1 or 2 of the over-priced over-the-hill big names for prospects?

  107. randy l

    “prospects”

i’ve come to hate that word prospects.

  108. Mike

I really don’t know how Hank and Hal are even considering bringing back Cashman at this point. The team is probably going to end up in the 85 or 86 win range – needless to say, underachieving for a $207 million payroll. His supposed emphasis on upgrading the farm system has been a falsehood. How many farm players made an impact on this season? Chamberlain, yes. Hughes, no. Kennedy, no. Do they have any potential players in the farm who will be ready for ‘09? No, unless you count Jackson. And that would mean rushing him to the ML, which is always a recipe for disaster (see Hughes). The only team in our system that has some potential high level talent is Charleston (Montero, Betances, Romine, Heredia, Laird, and Suttle). But all of those players are 3 or 4 years away from contributing anything to the club. All of his supposed great trades for prospects have failed: (1) Alberto Gonzalez and Ross Ohlendorf (i.e. Randy Johnson) have both been traded (2) Humberto Sanchez and Kevin Whelan (i.e. Gary Sheffield) have both suffered through arm injuries and slow development. Plus, his strategy in regards to international scouting and the draft has blown up in his face for ‘08. He has said himself that the team did not sign any high level talent out of Latin America after missing out on Michael Inoa. And in regards to the draft, he failed to sign the prized selection (i.e. Gerrit Cole), who happened to be one of the top 5 pitchers in the entire pool of talent. Now, people can come back and say that it was Cole’s decision to go back to school. But, ultimately, Cashman and Oppenheimer understood the risks and drafted Cole anyway. Given the circumstances, there is absolutely no way whatsoever that you can let him go to UCLA. None.

So, all in all, I think those are pretty solid reasons why Cashman should not be retaining his job in ‘09. I understand people are gonna come back with: “Well, what do you expect? When you lose Posada, Matsui, Wang, Chamberlain, and A-Rod (for part of the season) for the season, you try to win.” And my response? Red Sox lost Schilling for the season. Ortiz has missed the majority of the regular season. Ramirez (when he was still there) was skipping games each and every day. And now Drew is pretty much done for the rest of the year. And do you see those fans making excuses? None whatsoever. It’s not my fault that the Yanks couldn’t battle through injuries, like every other team in the league.

  109. TurnTwo

“yeah changing starting catchers at the end of a season is really an astute baseball move when the one you have knows the pitchers and is doing a good job.”

what has been the problem all season? the offense.

what did Cashman do about it at the deadline? he got the best offensive catcher available to plug a whole and lengthen the lineup, who also happened to be a solid defensive catcher in his own right. and he got him for a bullpen pitcher who wouldnt be back next season, and who brought a can of gasoline with him every time he took the mound.

    how dare he.

“i said it in the beginning. hank is a baseball lightweight who is in charge because his father owns the team and is mentally disabled which explains hank being given the reins to the team. nespotism at it’s worst.”

and how do you really know who is in charge? you go into the organizational meetings? you an intern in the front office? best friends with a guy who knows a guy who’s second cousin is the janitor at the stadium?

seriously, this kind of assumption is just as ridiculous as the yankees offensive production with RISP.

when it comes down to it, none of us here know anything about what goes on in that front office. we can guess, have some fun discussion, but you (we) need to keep a little perspective on it.

  110. TurnTwo

“Could we still make a waiver wire deal and dump 1 or 2 of the over-priced over-the-hill big names for prospects?”

its being reported Pavano and Ransom wre placed on waivers, so there might be an outside chance someone needs an extra pitcher (Mets?) or wants to fill out their bench.

you wont get much for any of these guys now, but at least if you move Pavano before Sept 1st, you dont have to worry about that option or buyout for next season.

  111. steve

good call there hank. i know they are playing bad but this is only the second game he has seen at the stadium all season. i thought id say i miss george, but hank is a million times worse with his qoutes in the paper every day. which other owners in baseball say their team sucks? none, because it stupid and hank is a classless, spoiled brat, who was born with a golden spoon up his a**.

  112. TurnTwo

“i know they are playing bad but this is only the second game he has seen at the stadium all season.”

so what? because he didnt go to more games, he cant speak honestly about the way the team played? thats silly.

  113. Fan mail from some flounder...

Wow… Some funny posts today. Interesting that when Hank S. echos the opinion of just about every here, he’s a blowhard, bigmouth, etc. I guess that means we’re all blowhards & bigmouths, or more precisely, Yankee fans. I especially like those foot-stomping, vein-popping rants of “I wanna win now!”. Pure blowhard.

Also, the comments on Hank’s attendance record, like it matters whether he attends games or not. He’s an absentee owner. So what, right now, the Yankees are an absentee baseball team. Pure coincidence.

The Yankees have won 9 WS titles in my lifetime, 6 of them in the Steinbrenner ownership period. Hank can say whatever he wants to and attend however many games he pleases. Even when they’re down, it good to be a Yankee fan and it really is just a game!

    Cheers!

  114. JohnC

I really hope that Hal is the one calling the shots. He seems alot more levelheaded. Hank is just a big blowhard, who opens his mouth without thinking. He is a reporter’s dream with his stupid comments. If he is the one in charge, we are in alot of trouble.

  115. EN

    Wow Hank. Great analysis!
Why do you think they suck, Hank? Cashman you Fool!
This year alone Cashman has given us a starting rotation
of Phil Hughes, Sidney Ponson, Darrell Rasner,Pavano,
Ian Kennedy wrapped around two aging veterans in Messina and Pettite
Even with Joba in the rotation we have been two starters
short! The Bullpen is a Crapshoot and Mariano is getting
older! Fire Cashman Now and try to build something for
next year! While I’m not sold on Girardi as a manager the
piss poor pitching is not his fault!
He plays the hand he’s dealt!
Give him a good rotation and bullpen and see what he does!
Also please don’t waste any more time on a never was like
Melky Cabrera! I can’t believe this is the best the Yanks have in their farm system!

  116. Tantron Willoughby

Hank is a good man. A good man has to know his limitations.

  117. Kalee Narainr

DUDE HANK THAT IS SOO MEAN DUDE! LOOK YOU OWN THIS TEAM U SUCK!!!
