Game 134: Blue Jays at Yankees
YANKEES (71-62)
Damon CF
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
A. Rodriguez 3B
Giambi 1B
Nady LF
Matsui DH
Cano 2B
I. Rodriguez C
Pavano RHP
Carl Pavano (1-0, 5.40) vs. the Toronto hitters
A.J. Burnett (16-9, 4.58) vs. the New York hitters.
Notes: Thanks to Kevin Devaney for texting in the lineup. … The Yankees scored three or fewer runs 57 times in 133 games, or 43 percent of the time. How amazing is that? … The Yankees are three games ahead of the Jays and play them six more times.
IDLE CHATTER: This will be Carl Pavano’s first appearance at the Stadium since Opening Day 2007. … He is 1-2, 5.40 against the Blue Jays in his career but hasn’t faced them since 2005.
BURN, BABY BURN: A.J. Burnett is 3-0 with a 1.61 ERA against the Yankees this season in three starts.
EVEN UP: The Yankees are 6-6 against the Jays, although they have been outscored 57-44.
BUTCH AND SUNDANCE: Pavano and Burnett were teammates with the Marlins from 2002-04. They then became financial wizards. Pavano got four years and $39.95 million from the Yankees before the 2005 season and has given him 20 starts and six wins.
Burnett landed a FA deal from the Blue Jays before the 2006 season and has so far produced 74 starts and a 36-25 record for $31 milion. Like Pavano, his commitment has been questioned because of some shadowy injuries. Now Burnett pitching well and is expected to exercise the opt-out clause in his deal.
Back later with updates.
UPDATE, 4:32 p.m.: This from MLB:
Major League Baseball suspended three minor leaguers Friday for violating the league’s drug prevention and treatment program. Handed 50-game suspensions were pitchers Justo Arias and Rafael Martinez of the New York Yankees and pitcher Jhon Rodriguez of the Chicago Cubs.
All three players, who are playing in the Dominican Summer league, tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs – Arias and Martinez for Stanozolol and Rodriguez for Nandrolone.
UPDATE, 5:18 p.m.: Joe Girardi, on his paid spot on WFAN, just said that Joba Chamberlain could be activated next week and that it would be as a reliever. That’s sort of news. Maybe the beat writers need to pay him. I’ll set up a Pay Pal account or something.
(To be fair, Girardi did tell the writers the same thing. But he was awfully chummy with Evan Roberts).
UPDATE, 6:40 p.m.: A-Rod got stuck in traffic today and missed batting practice. But he has arrived at the Stadium and will play.
Meanwhile Jeter left his place early and stopped twice on his way to the stadium to escort blind old ladies across the street. And he got Starbucks.
UPDATE, 8:03 p.m.: Sorry for the lack of updates. I am not at the Stadium tonight. I’m doing some work from home.
All kidding aside on Pavano, if he continues to pitch well today, shouldn’t Brian Cashman try and trade him before Aug. 31? They’re obviously not bringing him back, so send him to a contender and try to get a decent prospect back for him.
UPDATE, 8:41 p.m.: That was the first career hit for Snider, who was called up when they DFA’d Matt Stairs.
It’s hard to tell on television, but Pavano seems to be giving up a lot of rockets that his outfielders are making nice plays on. Get six innings out of him and be happy with that.
UPDATE, 8:48 p.m.: The countdown lever was pulled by the grandchildren of former clubhouse manager Pete Sheehy. Not a dry eye in the house.
UPDATE, 8:55 p.m.: No matter what happens, smart move by Girardi taking out Pavano. Six innings was enough, use the bullpen.
UPDATE, 9:24 p.m.: Why take Marte out after six pitches? Jose Veras should not be the 8th inning guy, that’s why you have Marte. Now they’re in trouble. Bruney for one batter is a waste, too.
UPDATE, 9:33 p.m.: Wow, what a job by Mariano.
But after getting four outs yesterday, he’ll need to get five outs today. And he got four outs last Sunday. Three multiple-inning outings in six days are a lot for Rivera.
UPDATE, 9:48 p.m.: Mariano Rivera certainly earned that save. How amazing is he?
A.J. Burnett goes 8 7 2 2 1 8 and takes a loss.
UPDATE, 9:52 p.m.: Um, Pavano is 2-0. He has allowed one run in his last nine innings.
Since anything is now possible, I’m going to call Blake Lively and see if she wants to go to Vegas for the weekend.

Good line up, however I still expect the standard 10+ K’s from Burnett.
I think we finally hit Burnett tonight, faced him so much..time to tee off..lets go yanks!
Give me a break Joe G! Grow a set and make the switch. Nady and ARod need to switch spots until Arod gets the message that a 220 avg with RISP is not good enough.
220 was an estimate…its actually .246. And avg with bases loaded of .100 a big 1 for 10. Still not near what you want from a cleanup guy.
need to sweep, need to sweep a lot of series..starting with this one.
wheres the A-rod last year with the bases loaded? he was like 7/14 with 3 grand slams!
this was the end result of benching Giambi and then coming off the bench he saved the day yesterday,,right ?…we get to see him leave 5 plus men on base right back in the 5 spot, where he finishes any rally killing that A-Rod hasn’t completed….and will certainly be an O-Fer today with RISP….watch and enjoy ! ( NOT ! )
Good luck, Carl. You’re gonna need it.
What’re the matchups for the next 2 games?
“wheres the A-rod last year with the bases loaded? he was like 7/14 with 3 grand slams!”
This is what people who just take Pete and Kepner’s word don’t realize. His past 3 years as a Yankee he has been a beast with RISP and the bases loaded.
We will need a new left side of the infield next year.
today is my birthday. i shaved my beard so i’d look younger. i wanted to leave the mustache, but when i remembered, it was too late. i look 12 now.
win the game for me Yankees!
“You just knew that Giambi would be right back in the lineup after those hits last night.”
Fugh, he was going to be 5th no matter what he did. Nady was only 5th yesterday because of the lefthanded pitcher.
season is over anyway, does not matter where giambi/pudge bat.
hope pavano has a good start then we can trade him to the NL tomorrow
Happy Birthday, saucY.
Going out for pizza?
mel, i just realized Pete forgot to make his standard “pitching matchups” post at the beginning of a series. maybe that will change our luck!
“season is over anyway, does not matter where giambi/pudge bat.
hope pavano has a good start then we can trade him to the NL tomorrow”
Dude nobody would even want him.
mel, possibly pizza followed by lots of good beer from the local brewery…
Sounds like Saucy, who thinks he looks like he’s 12, will be have his big day at Chuck E. Cheese.
How can someone who’s been on a team for 4 years not face a division opponent in 3 years? Head scratcher…
Over/Under K’s for Burnett tonight-10.
Over/Under innings for Pavano-5.
Yup, they’ll be asking saucY for ID.
Look! Another ex-A’s pitcher in Wrigley’s field.
I remember that a few years ago, there were these charts and such going around that any team that had more than one former Cub or two Oakland A’s had never won a world series.
lol @ chuck e. cheese. i have to counter the looking 12 and pizza with the beer (aka, getting sauced!)
Brandon -
Thought you might like to know that Rob Dibble, et al, are positively raking the Yankees for putting Joba back in the pen.
Don’t you suppose there’ll be some sort of variation on the Joba Rules? My understanding that this is for rehab, not to go back into the pen, per se.
have a good weekend everyone!
I cannot believe that Arod is still hitting 4th. The guys in front of him will scratch their way on tonight, and he`ll leave them on the bases.
heres my lineup
Damon
Arod
Jeter
Abreu (RBI LEADER)
Nady
Matsui
Cano
Giambi
Irod
Happy b-day mr. Saucy! Hope you have a good one. Go yankees!!
Happy Birthday saucy! And just for you I am going to do the following: one is to tell you that I just finished watching the NESN repeat of yesterday’s game and am now watching the repeat of their postgame stuff and it is just so sweet!
Also since I know we are of one mind on this stuff, this was from today’s projo: NEW YORK –– His tiny office crammed with reporters, Terry Francona reviewed Thursday’s 3-2 loss to the Yankees with uncharacteristically blunt language.
Ordinarily, Francona dismisses defeats with a promise to regroup tomorrow. But the nature of this cruel setback, in which the Red Sox wasted a masterful pitching performance by Jon Lester, seemed to sting the manager more than usual.
“This one hurts,†he said. “We played our hearts out and lost a really tough game.â€
He labeled the loss “hard to take.â€
And, still, the worst was yet to come. Minutes after Francona delivered his post-mortem, general manager Theo Epstein produced the really ominous news.
Josh Beckett would not be starting as planned Friday night, after all. His elbow, which had sidelined him twice already on this road trip, was not yet 100 percent.
And for the rest of you who are hung up on the “liar” Joe Girardi, realize that the holding back of information happens everywhere. This is also from Sean McAdams’ article:
Beckett will fly to Birmingham, Ala., Friday morning and visit with the famed orthopedist. The Sox insist the visit is merely for Beckett’s “peace of mind,” but then their track record is not exactly spotless in this matter. Recall that 10 days ago Beckett was scratched from a start in Baltimore because, said the Sox, he slept awkwardly on his prized right arm, resulting in tingling and numbness in the fingers of his right hand. Only days later did the Sox admit the problems were, in truth, rooted in inflammation of the right elbow, a more disconcerting diagnosis.
As recently as two days ago, when Beckett successfully completed a 50-pitch side session here, the Red Sox were borderline ecstatic with the results.
Then late Thursday afternoon, 26 hours before his next scheduled start, he was scratched again, even though the numbness and tingling hadn’t recurred.
“The elbow itself doesn’t feel 100 percent,†according to Epstein.
“We’re pretty optimistic this is getting better,†Epstein later added.
Maybe the Red Sox are telling the truth now; time will tell. But what seems unassailable is that this is potentially disastrous news.
Anyway, the trade off in watching games and posting is that you obviously cannot totally watch and study every pitch the way you can when you aren’t posting. But it is more fun watching the game with other fans than not!
Onward and upward!!
GO YANKEES!!!!
Saucy -
Have a great weekend – keep that id handy!!!
And, duh, Happy Birthday, Saucy!
If he’s willing to bat two lefties in a row (Matsui & Cano) why the hell doesn’t Joe G move Giambi down in the order so Nady (a righty) can protect A-Rod, who’s also a righty?
Or, why not flip-flop Abreu & A-Rod, abandon the idea of alternating righties & lefties, and mix it up to look like this: Damon-Jeter-A-Rod-Abreu-Nady-Matsui-Pudge-Giambi-Cano?
Why not bench Giambi and pick someone from the crowd to play first? If Kieth Olberman’s mom hadn’t been scared away by Chuck Knoblauch’s throwing yips years ago, she might even be there to come out from the stands and play first (and hit) better than Giambi.
Anything … ANYTHING for an alternate to Giambi.
OK he won a game with a hit the other day. And it was against Boston. You’re right .. offer the man a guaranteed 4-year extension because of that alone.
Doreen,
How about changing it to NDY? Or NaDY?
Am I the only one who doesn’t want to see Burnett in pinstripes? The guy is a DL stint waiting to happen, and doesn’t truly dominate anyone other than the Yankees. Yes he has 16 wins, but with a 4.5 ERA, and a whip of 1.4. For the kind of money he want I hope the Yanks pass on him.
Is anyone REALLY surprised Giambi’s back and hitting number 5? Seriously?
Mel,
It took me a bit to get what you meant. A little slow on the uptake. I’ll think about that change. This is my first foray into adding something after my name – baby steps, baby steps.
First off, happy birthday to Saucy and thanks for your loyalty.
Meanwhile, when did I ever suggest that Girardi was the only manager who misled the media (and fans) about injuries? As I always write, all teams do it in all sports.
I don’t even actually mind it. It’s part of the game. No coach or manager should volunteer such info. But if somebody figures it out and asks you a direct question, you should not lie then. That damages your credibility on all issues.
If there was wood in the lineup, would Moose have ended up with 20-22 wins by the end of this this year?
Pushing 17 now, he should be pushing 19 based on his last couple outings alone. And it’s still August.
It’s good to have wood.
This team is so short on wood they should recruit Smiling Bob to play first in stead of Giambi, and have him supply Enzyte to the rest of the team.
Yankees team defense is like 2nd or 3rd in baseball. So therefore Jeter and Giambi have not been that bad
Pete – What if Joe G (or whichever coach) leveled with the press and just said they couldn’t comment or wanted to hold back (for the time being or otherwise)?
Beckett-Tommy John? Honestly I don’t think it would matter the Sux have a way of losing big players and dealing with it from within, see Jed Lowrie, Dustin Pedroia, Kevin Youkilis, Jon Lester, Clay Buchholz, Justin Masterson.
Doreen –
I’m not surprised at all … it’s more like ‘despondent’.
Nailbiter in Chicago. Blanton walks the first 2 guys, gets the next two out. Has Fukudome at 1-2, then walks him. Finally they bring in a new guy.
Ugh. From 0-1 to a 5 pitch walk to tie the game. Bases still loaded.
Giambi is going to go on a tear. You heard it right here.
Has anyone else noticed how streaky he has been this year? ie, when he puts on the thong, grows a mustache and any other silly thing put out there to take out any ideas he may be juicing again.
Hopefully, he and some others(Cano-roids are rampant in DR)take their shots for the final push of 29 games. Think about it, where does Giambi want to be next year-playing in NY or KC?
Why do the CUBS play day game on Friday?
Okay…a fresh start today. We’re not losing yet. It’s still 0-0!!!
Actually Pete, that stuff about Girardi was for the posters here and not for you. I have continually said that I understand your need as a reporter to get the most accurate and timely information that you can but have said that at the same time I don’t think Girardi owes fans jack squat in terms of information. I also pointed out that he likely does a lot of that as an element of strategy, something I can totally understand and respect. So I was just pointing out for those who don’t get the strategy part that Francona did the exact same thing and obviously the reporters on the Boston beat aren’t crazy about it either. I never suggested that you said other teams don’t do the same thing.
just saw on espnnews… josh beckett was put on 15 day DL
saucY:
Enjoy your big day, buddy.
And don’t be so down on the ‘stacheless face. I shaved my mustache a few years back because it went grey. Be thankful that’s not your problem. Besides, plenty of women like younger men, or so I am constantly being reminded these days
Giambi should have been placed on waivers, remember you heard it here first.
Josh is done for the season, BANK ON IT !
Happy birthday, saucY! And enjoy the brewery – not Defiant, is it?
Tyler, check out this lead-in in the Boston Globe on-line edition, with a 4:26 p.m. timestamp!
“Tests on Josh Beckett’s injured right elbow came back clean today, and the Red Sox ace could return to the mound as early as Friday night in Texas, according to manager Terry Francona.”
He he he!
Right under it is an article that Beckett is going on the DL.
Again with the Yankees players on Steroids. Have we created a culture that fosters this/encourages this ? Giambi, Pettitte, Clemens, etc.
Beckett on DL, but Dr. Andrews found nada.
Beckett now tentatively set to pitch in Texas next Friday.
The Sox can lose Beckett because they actually got good young players who perform well.
That’s terrific Trisha. Be happy about an injury. That’s all about class right there.
Where do we find some of these fans?
“Again with the Yankees players on Steroids. Have we created a culture that fosters this/encourages this ? Giambi, Pettitte, Clemens, etc”
Easy! There has to be what, 175 or so players in the Yankees organization and TWO are called for PED’s. Hardly an epedemic.
Ok here ate the stadium waiting for gates to open and freddie sez guy walking around. You know it is bad when his sign todays says “yankees running out of time and space”
Also with regard to the dsl suspensions does anyone else find it suspect that of the 51 suspension in the minors this year 33 of them are from the dsl? Either something strange and bad is going on down there or there are other issues going on ie language, translation, other pressures.

Pitcher Josh Beckett has been diagnosed with strained right elbow and placed on the 15-day DL, according to the Red Sox.
Girardi is a terrible manager. Not dealing with the media may work in Florida but it won’t work here. Especially being a .500 team.
gayle,
Grab the pan and hit Freddy over the head with it.
Trisha, They’ll just backdate Beckett’s DL stint to the day after his last start. If he is healthy enough to pitch, he could still make the Friday start. However, even if he’s put in the official lineup, then cannot make the start, the DL stint would start over again. Since the rosters expand to 40 on 1 september, there’s no reason to put him on the DL.
gayle, the DSL is where the epidemic is at. If it doesn’t get cleaned up down there, to include the scouting scams, I look for MLB to force the closing of the MLB sponsored schools.

clam up. she was laughing about the ongoing dispute with PA over the dishonesty of teams and managers hiding and lying about injuries, not the injury to Beckett. Instead of just trolling for things to whine about, try finding out what you’re talking about.

The news on Josh Beckett is becoming a little clearer. Beckett visited with Dr. James Andrews today and tests on his right elbow all came back clean, according to Terry Francona. If all goes well, Francona said he expects Beckett to be back to start the first game of the Rangers series, which is next Friday in Texas.
“If he doesn’t come through [get a clean bill of health], we’ll try something else,” Francona said on the chance of Beckett starting Friday.

the Yankees statistically might rank 2nd or 3rd in the least # errors, but that statistic doesn’t count the plays they should have made, thru their lack of range, and the outs they would have had by backing up to the wall[Abreu].
Brandon: Yankees should put Giambi thru waivers, but doubt anyone would be stupid enough to take on the 5M buyout, let alone give us a decent minor leaguer in return.
They should definitely put Mussina thru waivers with the agreement he would be traded only to an AL contender to give him a chance at his 1st 20 win season, and an agreement we would want him back as FA.
Twins with their remaining easiest schedule will either win division or be wildcard.
What is going on with Edwar’s suspension?
“Twins with their remaining easiest schedule will either win division or be wildcard.”
Twins aren’t much of a road team. They’re in the middle of a 14 game trip and are 3-5 thus far. They’ve lost 5 of their last 6, which include 3 losses to the A’s/Mariners. After this trip, they have 6 at home followed by a 10 game road trip.
As great at Burnett has been against NYY this year there’s a pretty shaky body of work overall where he is concerned. Seems like the personalification of Luke Laloosh… million dollar arm and a ten cent head. How on earth can I guy with that arm have such mediocre stats?
CC, Sheets, Perez and Dempster, if available are all better risks, and Penny might be a lkess expensive chance to score big a year removed from his arm troubles.
Between phony birth certificates and all these drug tests I would approach Dominican players verrryy carefully.
Would be nice to get a win today. Hell it would be nice to have some decent at bats against Burnett.
The insane ARod bashing is really tiresome. THIS year he stinks with RISP… but that’s just one friggin’ stat. Two games back he doubled in his first two AB, scored a run and drove one in, but since neither ocurred with a RISP it doesn’t count to some of you. Of course the way the bullpen imploded it didn’t matter in the end, but those were great AB when they took place. Ease up a bit folks
They’ll retrofit Beckett back about ten days or so since he last pitched, which makes sense. It allows him to pitch on Friday, and they are able to call someone up to put on the bench between now and then, which will probably be Bowden to their bullpen.
It’s a good move to put him on the DL for the week, even if he’s not hurt. It’ll give them more wiggle room for the weekend series, which is much more important to them than the one they just walked through in NY.
Twins with their remaining easiest schedule will either win division or be wildcard.â€
Except for the fact that Boston, who plays about .750 at home, has about 80% of their games at home down the stretch.
My guess is that TB gets the wildcard after losing the lead in Fenway later this month.
Just a guess though.
Yanks 6 toronto 5
I see a lot of the Yankee hitters taking bunts at BP. It doesn’t look like they’re taking it very seriously.
So far, each batter takes two bunts and then swings away. They better get more serious about learning to get a bunt down if they expect to move runners across against Burnett.
20 of 29 to be exact, so they really have about 69% of their last games at home, not eighty.
The other road games for them are three with TB, three with Texas (who they’ve owned), and three in Toronto.
It’s not going to be easy for them to be caught, which I’m sure has been said here adnas.
Frank, that’s common in BP. The first round starts with two bunts, then swing away. That’s pretty universal from HS onward, man.
Thanks Paulie.
I just thought I’d like to see a little more bunt practice… for tonight anyway.
Those minor leaguers got caught using stanozolol and nandrolone?
I assume they knew what they took, so how on earth could they even think they would get away with taking those?
If somehow they actually didn’t know those things were an ingredient in something they took (maybe something with a different name) who on earth thinks they can advertise that their ‘product’ would test clean?
Is it believed (or even proven) that someone can take that stuff, drink a ton of water & pee like a racehorse for a few weeks, and pass a PED test?
CUBS WIN CUBS WIN CUBS WIN….85-50, with 27 games to play….
.

.
, every 100 years, they WIN IT ALL !
No. Those are straight-up steroids. There’s no way they pass a test. Not sure what they were thinking. Just goes to show you how many players use steroids. From the CGL on up to the majors.
Even guys who don’t use now, probably have used in the minors.
Joba back to the pen? Such a waste.
I agree, Timmy….unless it is for just a couple of games, then back in the rotation….putting him back in the ‘pen and keeping Pavano, Ponson & Rasner in the rotation is the same as waving the white flag.
The 10 things the Yankees did wrong in offseason:
1. Go back on their word and resign A-Rod to a 10 year contract, even though he was their only righty power hitter, and worse yet giving bonuses for home run records. Better yet he should have been traded to the Cubs or Angels who showed interest in him after 2006 season.
2. Pick up a relief pitcher, who had one good season in NL, but had been a failure in AL-Hawkins, who they felt they were getting on the cheap because he’d sign for only one year. In the end we had to pay the rest of his salary anyway in order to trade him.
3. Allow Girardi to bring in all his own coaches and let Bowa walk, who at least should have been his bench coach.
4. Give Posada a 4 year deal who at the time was 36 yo, now 37, when he hit >.300 for the only time in career. Of course he knew he had us because nothing was out there on FA market.
5. Relying on both Hughes and Kennedy as your end of the rotation starters, instead of trying to trade for an established starter like Haren.
6. Having Pettitte decide to come back as late as he did, which sealed the deal on not pursuing Santana, for what might have been other prospects, with Hughes out of the trade- people like Kennedy, Marquez, Horne, to name a few.
7. Draft poorly and not sign your #1 pick
8. Not trading Matsui when there was some interest-Matsui and Marquez/Horne possibly could have gotten Jonathan Sanchez from the Giants at the time.
9. Not taught the fundamentals of bunting, hit and run, hitting to opposite field, etc.
10. Relying on older players instead of trading some of their minor league pitshers for young minor/major league position players.
Now can you name 10 good things that the Yankees did right this season, besides bringing back Mussina!!
I’m waiting!!
Still waiting!!
LOL,Hah I thought so!!
Of course I’m being cynical, because it’s easy to pass judgement after the fact, and who knew we’d have so many key injuries?
Joba a waste in the pen?Do you know how unhittable he was as Mariano setup man.Yes he will be a starter but lets not say a waste.
The biggest problem with these young guys is health. And Joba was a health risk like Kennedy when he was drafted, why do you think we got him as a sandwhich pick.
Until Joba and Hughes play one full season as a starter can I say he is a better as a starter. These kids need to earn it.Joba and Hughes tried but still needs to stay healthy.
Joba has to go to the pen, because they are limiting his pitching curve balls and sliders that put strain on his arm.
So Joba, coming off a shoulder injury is going to be throwing at maximum effort and torque and might only get 8-9 innings under his belt and will really serve as no use considering Bruney is back to normal, Marte has re-found himself, and Veras has done very well. Meanwhile, our rotation consists of Pavano, Rasner, Ponson, and an ailing Pettitte.
Brilliant.
LLIME
Agree the rotation is awful, goes 6 innings max, and the bullpen lately has looked tired and worn, but you cannot put Joba back in the rotation while only allowing him to pitch with 50% of his arsenal.
yankees will ruin him. they have a spotty track record at best in nurturing players
How is Pettitte ailing? He had one bad game out of 4. You’re so intelligent.
Just heard on the radio that A-Rod is “missing”
The team is taking batting practice and he’s nowhere to be found and apparently nobody can find him.
You don’t think we killed him with all the booing do ya?
“How is Pettitte ailing? He had one bad game out of 4. You’re so intelligent.”
He might be talking about the 3-3 record, 5.22 ERA, and 1.50 WHIP he’s authored over eight strats since the break. Obviously doesn’t mean he’s ailing, but it’s certainly not the type of 2nd half he’s been known for.

“Everything came out, the word would be awesome, from our standpoint,” manager Terry Francona said. “Everything was clean. There were a number of tests and Josh came thought with flying colors. Obviously, we hoped for that. We needed to get some closure.”

As much as I think A-Rod is untradeable, here’s a thought- If the Cubs win the WS this year, and Mark Cuban gets ownership of the Cubs, they might be the only team willing to trade for A-Rod? Am I crazy for thinking that? Yes!
A-Rod is missing ? Come on ! You’re joking, right ? where did you hear that ???
The latest plan to have Beckett start against Texas on Sept. 5.
Pitcher Josh Beckett has placed on the 15-day DL with that injured right elbow, according to the Red Sox. The move is retroactive to Aug. 18.
A-rod AWOL? He saw Pete’s lineup and figured he wasn’t playing.
“yankees will ruin him. they have a spotty track record at best in nurturing players”
Yup. Sucked the way they ruined the careers of Jeter, Posada, Mo, Bernie, Pettitte, etc. Those guys may have accomplished something in a more nurturing environment.

“based on 3 games where he gave up 5, 6 and 9 runs. He’s always had 8-10 stretches like that. How about the 2 no decisions of 7 innings, 3 runs during that time.”
True enough. I had commented to someone who was scolding him for his last start that the 2 starts prior were particularly strong, but I think in general that his July and August have been considerably below the standards he’s set for himself.

Which special forces group were you with in Nam?
No question that Pettitte had a much better year last year, but, that start on Tuesday was an abortion. I’ve seen a lot of games in my lifetime, and, that was one of the worst jobs of calling balls and strikes that I’ve seen. Reynolds wasn’t just inconsistant team to team, he was inconsistant pitch to pitch. That’s the sort of performance that should have gotten him suspended at the least. Fired would be better. Joe West has got to be the worst crew chief around. His umpires are never in position and have the most varied strike zone in baseball.
5th Group, why?
So toronto is taking bp and all the pitchers and some others are in the outfield. On the big screen they are showing a film about the new stadium and interesting to see all the blue jays players watching the screen taking a look at the new stadium
“5th Group, why?”
He’s probably going to propose to trade you to a different group.
Green Beret may be old and crusty, but we can’t have him traded to another blog.
Mel
You’re certainly right. A green beret, awarded the medal of honor for his service in Nam should not be traded to another blog, no matter how old, crusty, and condascending he is.
“A-Rod is missing ?”
Got caught in Labor Day Deegan traffic. Is at stadium now per Kim Jones.
“Got caught in Labor Day Deegan traffic. Is at stadium now per Kim Jones.”
I’d bench his ass. He lives in the City. He knows what time of year it is. His 24 teammates somehow managed to make it on time.
It’s raining at the stadium right now. This is the third game on my Friday plan that may get delayed or rained out. This season sucks.
Sorry, but, I never won the Medal Of Honor
It may be a good thing that Rodriguez missed batting practice and had less time to think and prepare. He can just go into the game and react.
For Blue Jays fans, this game is all about the debut of Travis Snider. We thought this would come next year, but he is now ready for Yankee stadium.
He can rake big time.
You all know about Burnett, but I am curious to know about Pavano. I saw him pitch years ago, but has he changed his style and is he stretched out?
Mel, the rumors (all true) are that crusty, old Green Berets make the best lovers. I have four ex-wives that will agree.
“You all know about Burnett, but I am curious to know about Pavano. I saw him pitch years ago, but has he changed his style and is he stretched out?”
Heck yeah he changed his style… he’ll be on the mound (maybe).
“UPDATE, 6:40 p.m.: A-Rod got stuck in traffic today and missed batting practice. But he has arrived at the Stadium and will play.
Meanwhile Jeter left his place early and stopped twice on his way to the stadium to escort blind old ladies across the street. And he got Starbucks.”
Haha. And don’t forget that Jetes only had a few seconds for a brief stop home this afternoon after spending all morning feeding the homeless at the soup kitchen!
Pete, please stop with the Girardi hate. It’s getting so old.
Torre was paid for his WFAn appearances too.
Anyway, I will not say a word about Giambi batting 5th tonight, lol. But I am keeping my nickname in case he reads this blog and it is spurring him on to greatness!
Go Glass Carl!!
Um I thought Alex said he was going to get to the Stadium extra early?
I left work at 2:30 caught a 2:50 bus. While there was some traffic it wasn’t awful. He should have been able to get up town rather quickly.
Nobody has any idea what ARod had on his plate this afternoon. Give him a break. Maybe he had a visit with his daughters that ran late. Please.
haha nice juxtiposition of jeter and a-rod.
http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com.....lector.jsp
Just found this. very cool!!
***two hour gap in posting***
Pete -
You are just too funny. But you forgot to mention that Jeter got Starbucks for the whole team!
Jennifer -
That is sooooo cool. Thanks.
The Starbucks wasn’t for the blind old ladies?
pat -
Aha! Jeter’s not the boyscout we thought he was!
Why don’t we just ask arod to wear a gps so we can track every move and critique his schedule.
27mm per year is not worth being under the glare of the ragged ass artillery.
I thought the seats I usually get were padded, i was shocked. Until I realized I was a section too low.
Let’s go Carl. Stay healthy.
“Why don’t we just ask arod to wear a gps”
He already does, it’s the papparazzi model.
http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com.....lector.jsp
Don’t know if this will show up, any way click a view of seats in the outfield. They have the soxs lineup up with Manny there. I guess the graphics were done before Manny was traded.
Jennifer -
Do you mean padded as in cushioned or padded as in added cost?
the field box seats are padded. they are awesome to sit in.
Also go to the right field and look at the line up. Some guy named Smith is the dh hitting 4th, and they have Alex hitting 6th.
I guess they don’t like him.
It’s still so weird seeing Pavano out there.
Doreen both!!
I actually meant as in the seats.
They may not make it to the postseason, however, I just have a feeling that this race is going to tighten.
Jennifer -
In that diagram – when they say pricing n/a, does that mean you can only buy those seats as full season seats?
Pavano didn’t fool too many in the first inning. a lot of foul balls and everything is up.
They should be padded and awesome to sit in for $500 per seat per game!
It’s frickin’ cheaper to go to Cleveland to get a decent seat and see the Yankees play!
It’s bad enough we haven’t gone to a game in the Bronx because from where we live, it’s inconvenient to get there and to find parking.
Not sure, I found out about the link on the daily news site.
http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com.....tadium.jsp
Check this out as well. You have season tickets right? there is a questionnaire for you to fill out, so maybe you’ll find more info.
I sure hope they do something about parking. i am going Sunday and leaving extra early. I guess I can walk around and take pics of new stadium.
We’ve got to beat this guy at least once this year. I’m hoping tonight’s the night.
And people kill Alex! Jeter is Mister DP.
And the DP King returns.
Interesting!!
2. Will the seat sections in the new Yankee Stadium be numbered in the same manner and order as they are in Yankee Stadium?
No. We took advantage of the opportunity to number the seating areas in the new Yankee Stadium to reflect the original sequential section numbering system used in the original Yankee Stadium in 1923. Please see page 22 for more information.
Jeter.
Glad that Derek got there in time for the game! I would hope that the Yanks would know what approach to take against Burnett by now since they have seen him a number of times this season
Alright, Mr. Abraham…
Derek Jeter grounds into a rally-killing double play. Perhaps he should worry a little less about helping other people cross the street?
Nine pitches. I wonder if Burnett is exhausted.
A clutch double play.
9 pitches for Burnett
Double play from God
Captain GIDP strikes again.
BOS up 1-0 in the first.
That 10 game road trip is going to be a b****!
Jeter GIDP:
Starbucks in – Starbucks out.
A-Rod will have a MVP season next season.Since 2004 every other year(’05,’07) he has played good.So this was a down year next year people will eat there words.
Haven’t we learned anything from the past.
They really made AJ work that inning.
I wish I had seen that double play coming.
“Interesting!!
2. Will the seat sections in the new Yankee Stadium be numbered in the same manner and order as they are in Yankee Stadium?”
I assume I am the only person who thinks that they ought to only number seat sections after retired numbers?
‘Yeah – I’m in Gehrig seat# 231. My buddy is stuck in Gator 15 poor sucker!’ ?
You know people complain about AROD. At least he’s having a good year at the plate compared to Jeter.
This umpire wants attention. No reason he needs to call strikes that loud.
I wouldn’t be crushed if Carl’s start got rained out.
Hey at least there isn’t any question about the call.
I actually like that they are reverting back to the old number system.
all the pitches are up.
He has a sense of humor? They guy made 40mil for doing nothing. Of course he’s laughing; all the way to the bank.
“I wouldn’t be crushed if Carl’s start got rained out.”
Even better would be a nice 1.5 hour delay where we start Aceves and Burnett has to sit down.
Of course that would a shame b/c we wouldn’t give the Rajah a great debut!
1 – 0, Mets already
Laura, I’m sure the players disagree with your complaints about the umpire’s calls. They’d prefer that over your desire to hear him whisper. Players hate the delayed calls and silence.
Just got here so haven’t read any game posts yet. Just in a word or so, how is Carl looking? I can see there is no score yet.
And the Whiff King strikes again!
“This umpire wants attention. No reason he needs to call strikes that loud.”
LOL
the booing of arod is so gay
its back to what it was in 06…the “cool” thing to do or the “in” thing
fans are such sheep
Much as I want to keep faith, we just dont have the players. So lets take a look toward next season.
2009 New York Yankees
-A monumental year for the Yanks. New stadium after missing the playoffs in ‘08 for the first time in 13 years. This is a new era we need a fresh start.
Front Office: Brian Cashman’s contract is up this season. He has been with us for about 9, 10 years and although we have never won it all with him as gm. I would be reluctant to let him go, he knows the organization too well, and has a plan in place. These ridiculous contracts were more from the steinnbrenners than Cashman, even though he has made some bad moves.
-Re-sign Cashman 2-3 years
Coaching Staff: Long and Meachem got to go. They are Yes men and have not contributed to us in a positive way. Lack experience.
-Hire 2 MLB experienced coaches who have some fire.
Player Personnel:
-Buy out Giambi (Fred Flinstone), Let Abreu walk, Let Pavano walk, Let Moose walk, decline arb on Pudge let him walk, Marte arb, Nady arb.
-Depending on Arbitration and free agent signings we will have 3-8 picks in the first, compensation, and 2nd round.
-2009 Draft- Focus should be on corner IF/OF positions and power arms (as usual)
-Trades- Wilson Betemit and Matsui to the SF Giants for Simon Klink 3B S,R and Alexander Hinshaw RP L,L 6-4… We give up a good hitter in Hideki but we free up some room for our young guys. We can not afford to be a team full of DH’s anymore.
-Free Agent Signings- Re-Sign Andy Pettitte 1 yr. deal (Veteran leadership. Well respected Yankee). Sign C.C. Sabathia 6 yr. deal (A bonafide ace, gives us much needed stability in the rotation) Sign Adam Dunn 4 yr. deal (A lefty power threat we’ve been lacking, underrated defender) Sign Casey Blake 2 yr. deal (Great defender, can play 1B,3B,LF,RF, solid contact hitter, great chemistry guy) Sign Cesar Izturis 1 yr. deal (Great defender up the middle)

“They’d prefer that over your desire to hear him whisper. Players hate the delayed calls and silence.”
I don’t think he has to whisper. He needs to be audible, but not that audible.
Yeah, somebody is hitting Burnett. It’s just not us.
Think Burnett is trying to impress the Yankees brass? He can be a free agent after this season
Why would we want a pitcher who is hit by everyone but the team hiring him?
TB up 1-0.
burnett looks good tonight. Think Idle can match him?
Before I saw your comment, I’d asked my husband if there was any reason he was bellowing his calls at the players.
“Why would we want a pitcher who is hit by everyone but the team hiring him?”
I’ve gone on record saying that I don’t want Burnett. I think that he is due to be injured again soon. We are getting rid of Pavano. We don’t need to get his kissing cousin.
That ump must be hoarse by the time the game’s over! Who is it?
Trisha and Laura – I certainly don’t want him, but he keeps saying that he gets up for the Yanks because he likes to pitch on the big stage.
I see that Pavano is pitching for a job next year.
sheets would be a better signing than burnett who has a 4.58 era,.not that good at all.don’t fall into the same trap.
“I certainly don’t want him, but he keeps saying that he gets up for the Yanks because he likes to pitch on the big stage.”
More proof that he’s not someone we should be looking at. We need pitchers who get fired up for BOS as well as KC.
My gut tells me that if we don’t land CC, Burnett will be target #2.
Laura I have to agree with you. (By the way I’m not sure I’m ready to can Pavano even though I know most people hate him. I’ll let you know more by the end of the game.)
We have plenty of time when the season is over to think about pitching. There are so many pitchers du jour that look like what we want according to posters. CC is now in the NL. So he looks like Cy. Not saying he’s bad but I really can’t get to hepped up about next year’s pitching. I’m interested in what happens today thanks. Plenty of time to deal with this much later on. (Plus of course we don’t get a vote so I don’t get myself in a lather about it anyway!)
“sheets would be a better signing than burnett who has a 4.58 era,.not that good at all.don’t fall into the same trap.”
I don’t think so. Sheets is also an injury just waiting to happen. Also, his numbers are against the weaker NL. He may not be as good against AL hitters.
* too
Pavano seems to be dealing, at least on gameday. Evil thoughts pervade Cashman’s mind. Pick up option. Noooooo!!!!!! Don’t get fooled Brain.
Jennifer,
That 3-D seating chart is cool.
Burnett is not a pitcher I’d want to see on the Yankees. He’s injury prone – this year is an aberration.
Hi JB! I saw you were here earlier so I’m thinking maybe you’re still here. If you notice a lack of response or a lot of stream of consciousness here I would attribute it to the aftermath of a Sux series. I know my energy level is down!
trade cano, hughes for a frontline starter like kashmir, peavey, carmona, move jeter to second, arod to short, sign crede or just sign a secon baseman, sign sabathia also.can you imagine sabathia, peavey, wang, joba, mussina?
PUDGE!!!!!!!
Doreen – what did you put in after your name? I am trying to figure out what it is but I can’t.
Fran, but what scares me is that we haven’t seen much to validate what he’s saying other than what he does to us! Is he going to consider every game he pitches being on the big stage because we need or pitchers to go out and get the job done every time. I think he does a disservice to the Jays if he lets down other times.
Off-topic -
I’m finding out in a big way I’m less an “independent” voter than I thought.
I’m hoping there’s a disputed HR call tonight. I’m anxious to see IR in action.
Fran -
Well, previously I had put the musical symbols and then “Not Dead Yet” from Monty Python’s Spamalot. Mel suggested I use NDY or NaDY. I think I’ll go back to Not Dead Yet.
“Laura I have to agree with you. (By the way I’m not sure I’m ready to can Pavano even though I know most people hate him.”
What else does Pavano have to do – or more accurately not have to do for you to want to cut ties with him?
Rooting for Sidney (a stop gap who did fine) or Farnsworth (fragile but eventually effective) is wrong, but defensible – but PAVANO? That is just clueless.
Laura -
It would be kind of cool for the Yankees to be the first to use it, wouldn’t it?
Roland, I think we are all pretty low energy tonight (okay okay I’ll speak for myself) but I can tell you that I personally never bother getting into “next season” during the season. But a lot of the people here do, so if you don’t get takers make sure you bring that post back another time. Maybe people are doing things for the weekend, maybe the majority of posters who like to gripe will only show up if the Yankees blow up, but I’m sure at some point you’ll get discussion.
some high picthes there.
Wow – Abreu played D – nice!
“That is just clueless.”
Thanks! What are you and you pal in SF a tag team?
“trade cano, hughes for a frontline starter like kashmir, peavey, carmonaâ€
And you think the other team is just going to give us their frontline starter for Cano, who is half on, half off and Hughes, who is (apparently) injury prone?
“move jeter to second, arod to short,â€
This has been debated to death, but A-Rod himself has said that he can’t go back to SS.
“sign crede or just sign a second basemanâ€
Okay, so you want us to sign Joe Crede, who has chronic back problems and spends a good chunk of the season on the DL. Yeah, that doesn’t make sense.
“sign sabathia also.can you imagine sabathia, peavey, wang, joba, mussinaâ€
CC would make a fine addition to the rotation, but as it’s been mentioned before, he may choose to stay in the NL and/or go to a West Coast team. We’ll make a hard play for him, but it may not happen.
Nice inning, Pavano.
“It would be kind of cool for the Yankees to be the first to use it, wouldn’t it?”
Only if the call goes in our favor.
Doreen – thanks for the explanation.
Trisha – Burnett can’t beat Boston so right there would be reason not to sign him. But you’re right – let’s concentrate on this season.
should we pick up pavanos option for next year?
I like the embellishment next to your name, Doreen. Very cool.
Oi, Pavano grimacing while walking off the diamond.
I’m berrrrry impressed.
Anyone else hear Al choking on his words when asked if Carl has the fortitude to pitch in New York?
TKinDC -
It’s only clueless if you’re of the mind that he made himself get injured or didn’t care that he was injured. None of us is in his head. I never ranked on Pavano, and while I laughed at the buttocks injury, I have to ask: If it was someone else who hid a rib injury from the Yankees because he wanted to try and work through it, would you have the same opinion? My feeling is that even he said to himself, “shoot, this cannot be happening – I can’t tell them I’m hurt AGAIN.”
I do tend to give people the benefit of the doubt, and sometimes I guess I’m naive, but I’d rather be naive that cynical.
Cy Pavano
“should we pick up pavanos option for next year?”
No. If Pavano comes back to the Yankees, he should work for free to make up for the 40mil that he never earned.
Here’s what I’d do. If Pavano keeps working out I’d definitely bring him back but I’d write in a lot of language about having to start a certain number of games in the season and prorate him from there. It’s been done with other pitchers. So yeah I’d take him back if he looks great the rest of the year and we need a pitcher. After all, the Yankees did see something in him.
I know it is hard to recall. But Pavano pitched in 2005. Someone tell Kay to look at baseball reference if he doesn’t know something.
And by someone else, Phil Hughes comes to mind. He may not have known he had stress fracture in the ribs, but he must have felt something, no?
Nice call Michael Kay!
Hey! Let’s use the new monitor!!!!!
Why aren’t they using IR?
““That is just clueless.â€
Thanks! What are you and you pal in SF a tag team?”
I am sorry – I thought that you said “I’m not sure I’m ready to can Pavano even though I know most people hate him” which I think is clueless and obviously wrong – maybe you can deal with the actual argument rather than playing a victim.
Longest single in history.
Kay had me excited. lol.
time to use the new replay system
Mind you, I’m not saying the Yankees should necessarily make any overtures at all towards Carl Pavano. It’s one of those situations that might be best left to the past and both parties move onward. But if he pitches well for a month, no injuries and he and the Yankees come to an agreement, well, as the saying goes, you can never have too much pitching.
Damon trying to prevent Jeets from grounding into yet another DP.

Well, previously I had put the musical symbols and then “Not Dead Yet†from Monty Python’s Spamalot. Mel suggested I use NDY or NaDY. I think I’ll go back to Not Dead Yet.”
===================================================
I think it was a scene in “Monty Python and the Holy Grail”
Doreen, thanks for that about Pavano!
And
“I do tend to give people the benefit of the doubt, and sometimes I guess I’m naive, but I’d rather be naive that cynical.”
Oh do I hear you.
Fran
Maybe Boston will pick up Burnett, so he can pad his stats with 4 wins/season against us.
GiDP #2 ?
players are thinking too much about getting the runner over…just have a normal at bat and see what happens
“But if he pitches well for a month, no injuries and he and the Yankees come to an agreement, well, as the saying goes, you can never have too much pitching.”
While it’s true that you can never have too much good pitching, try looking at this from the Steinbrenner’s perspective. They gave this guy 40mil for what turned out to be a handful of starts. Would you want to give him more of your money?
dont dare boo jeter fans….nooo only arod!!
YankeeFanInVermont
Yes, it was, but I REALLY LIKE the musical version in Spamalot! (There’s a scene on YouTube if you care to look for it – laugh so hard you’ll cry!)
jet doig his arod impression.
Peter, please! We need something witty from you here! Jeter strikes out on a 57-foot pitch.
Doreen –
Anyone who has followed the reporting of Pavano’s issues has found him at fault – not just the ‘News’ and the ‘Post’ but the relatively objective media has hung a dog tag on him.
If you choose to ignore that – it is your prerogative – but I don’t.
Okay, we need a clutch single from somebody here. Actually, maybe a double since the TOR outfielders all have guns.
Jeter should have SF’d both times he’s been up.
laura, debated by who?, you? arod will move to short,he has no choice plus i don’t think he would mind and giving up hughes, cano and maybe another prospect and getting a frontline starter or one who is knocking at the door is possible, the red sox if i remember correctly got a nice pitcher named becket for arguably less because hanley and sanchez were only prospects and not established.my point is that this team needs pitching and a lot of it and if a good second baseman is out there then fine but if no good ones are out there then no stone should be left unturned.i am just sick of seing the same team out on the field every year with the payroll climbing.
yes yanks
anyone who doesnt want abreu back is lost
some of us still have faith
Hurray! Yankees score first against Burnett! Oh, happy day!
There’s that double I was talking about.
Maybe if I mention a double for A-Rod, he’ll get one too.
We need a double right here, A-Rod. Do you hear me? I’m talkin’ to you!
A run thingie!
wtg Bobay!!!!!!!!!1
Yes!!!!!
ARod is due
Yet another baserunning blunder by Abreu.
wow that was like a injury causing slide.
TKinDC –
YAWN! if you get my drift on how much meaning your DECLARATION of what is right and wrong has.
But here is what I really think about you telling anyone what is WRONG and what is clueless:
So you can see where this is going can’t you? Bye now.
Never thought I would see Pavano throw a 1 hitter, so far.
This season reaches new heights of bizarreness every day.
Is that a hit w/ RISP?
YEH BOBBY NICE CATCH SCHINEDER AND ABREU SCORES!!!
WOOT WOOT
I WANT BOBBY BACK NEXT YEAR!!!!
Boy he is awesome.
Woohoo! Two runs off Burnett. It’s a miracle!
Whoa whoa whoa
What is going on here?
Wouldn’t that be wonderful-Pavano pitches a shutout tonight, a team puts a claim in for him and we either dump the rest of his contract and buyout on them or work out a trade.
C’MON NADY U CAN DO BETTER THAN DAT
“YAWN! if you get my drift on how much meaning your DECLARATION of what is right and wrong has.”
If you care to restate this comment in english – that would be illuminating
Wow.. runs… PLURAL.
“i am just sick of seing the same team out on the field every year with the payroll climbing.”
Well, you most certainly will see a different team next year as the Yankees are sure to wheel and deal in the off season.
“Wow.. runs… PLURAL.”
Amen – good news!
Poor AJ. Think about this. He is definitely trying to audition for the Yankees so what is he doing? Probably pressing too hard – not that he isn’t pitching so well but probably not as well as he has against us in the past.
Ya hearing Kay? We might end up with Pavano after all!
Is Nady hitless tonight so far? He needs to tap into his hotness and smoke one.
Pavano is pitching well
Wow..trade pavano to a contender? In no way do I want Pavano back next year…nor do I think the Yankees want him back, but why not keep him down the postseason run. Way to go Pete..giving up on this team. These are the New York Yankees..never underestimate them..
“It ain’t over till it’s over.” ~Yogi Berra
Kevin
“Ya hearing Kay? We might end up with Pavano after all!”
Sorry to disappoint you, Trisha, but I doubt that will happen.
TKinDC -
I guess I also believe in redemption.
Look, realistically, I highy doubt Pavano sticks around.
Pavano will now give it all back.
“I guess I also believe in redemption.”
Me too – just not in pinstripes – I never wish injury on any player and I hope he does well, just elsewhere
“Wow..trade pavano to a contender? In no way do I want Pavano back next year…nor do I think the Yankees want him back, but why not keep him down the postseason run.”
I agree. After all of the money the Yankees have spent on this guy, they better keep him. Plus, with our shortage of pitchers, we can’t afford to be trading any of them away (even the bad ones!).
Still the fly balls, but, everything to the big part of the field. He looks good, so far.
ER, shut your pie hole, you dingle.
.
Pavano is the best. Now that he is healthy,,,he and Joba back in the rotation will propel us to the playoffs AND BEYOND !!!
.
The Yanks have an option on Pavano. So maybe they exercise it and then trade him like they did with Sheffield.
(Now that the game is official, it would be the perfect time for a torrential rain storm to end the game.)
Either Pavano has good stuff tonight or JB is right when he says they suck.
Not watching game-but are these fly balls to warning track?
They should’ve let Carl have the surgery when he first asked for it. Jesus, he’s doing a great job out there. There’s hope for Hughes. It’s like riding a bike.
No way do I want Carl Pavano traded to a contender, pitch well, and get to play in a playoff or God forbid a World Series. As “understanding” and giving of the benefit of the doubt I am, that scenario would JUST NOT BE RIGHT in the whole balance of the world!
yeh its raining here in new york
“ER, shut your pie hole, you dingle.”
He’s like roaches – we can do everything we can to extinguish him, but he’ll outlive us all
i hope it will end here now we are gonna winn!:D
TKinDC -
So we’re in agreement here!
I think the option is for 13+M- no way they pick that up , then trade him, having to eat a large part of the salary!
“Pavano is the best. Now that he is healthy,,,he and Joba back in the rotation will propel us to the playoffs AND BEYOND !!!”
Can I have some of the crack that you are apparently smoking?
“Sorry to disappoint you, Trisha, but I doubt that will happen.”
Laura here’s the good news on that one. I’ll live either way. (Well good news to me anyway)
I don’t get in a twist about what the Yankees do, I just root for whomever they put on the field.
Not able to watch the game tonight but am listening on the radio on my desk. Sterling & Waldman can’t say enough about the gem Carl is throwing.
I’m so proud of him. All of the adversity that he has faced. You know, he’s always had real injuries and he keeps coming back.
It must be satisfying for him to be so brilliant tonight.
Hey, I’m as happy as the next person that Pavano has taken the ball these past couple of games, but that’s what he’s being paid to do. I sure don’t want to see him back next year. I can recall the reporting that his teammates consider him a malingerer and a pariah and I’m pretty sure we don’t need one of those.
Any team but the Blue Jays and Pavano would have yielded 5 runs by now.
BTW, Pete, Pavano has a no-trade clause. I don’t know whether he’d exercise it or not, but if I was he, I would.
If I wanted maximum exposure for a contract for next year, I insist on pitching in New York, bigger stage and failure is easier to explain away than it would be on a genuine playoff contender.
In any case, the Yankees need as many starters as they have at the moment. Someone has to pitch every fifth day.
God knows that I love Matsui, but he hasn’t done a thing since he came back. Maybe he should go have the surgery and get himself ready for next year.
If runs were hotness, Nady would lead the team.
Imagine is Pavano stayed healthy for us all those years? Who knows what could have been..
Wouldn’t it be funny if Carl pitched the Yankees’ first CG ShO this season?
If runs were hotness, Nady would lead the team.
Oh hellz yeah!
robbie is stingy the ball tonight hot he gets and stays hot!!
Burnett is apparently hittable tonight. Shocking!
hope he gets and stays hot
Pavano option is 13 mil. I’m trying not to think about the Yanks picking it up. He should get 5 more starts. More if my prayers are answered.
Come on White Sox!
PUDGE LOL
GET HIM OFF THIS TEAM
“They should’ve let Carl have the surgery when he first asked for it. Jesus, he’s doing a great job out there. There’s hope for Hughes. It’s like riding a bike.”
mel (official booster of World Champions
)
Hughes is younger than any other major league pitcher – don’t write his obit any time soon (sarcasm)
Robbie Delivers! My Boy!!!!
Pavano is currently in pinstripes and he’s being asked to pitch every 5th day – hence I root for him. Its that simple, lol.
Which Cy Young is pitching for the Red Sox tonight, Pete?
Proof that there is only so much that Long can do. He told IRod to hit the ball to the right and what does he do? Pulls one to third. Such is the life of a hitting coach.
Ellen I can absolutely understand why any Yankee fan would never want to see Pavano’s face again next year. I just don’t feel the same way. But I have no difficulty with people never wanting to have to deal with him again.
Abreu should be hitting cleanup. He drives in runs, and has good at bats.
They most certainly should re sign him
Angel – love your title! Who would have thought Shakespeare and baseball blogs would have so much in common?
Is this Dr. Andrews the only sports doctor in the world?
Yanks will pay off Pavano, and if he gives the Yanks a big discount with incentives, they take a chance on him. It all depends on his conscience.
“If runs were hotness, Nady would lead the team.”
Speaking of hotness, Sarah Palin is pretty cute. Usually, women politicians look like Mrs. Doubtfire.
Anyone notice Matsui is batting .176 with 6 hits and 6 Ks in 34 ab’s since coming back? Not quite Godzilla numbers..
FLA leading the Mutts 2-1.
my name is pudge
i hit like smudge
i eat too much fudge
my name is pudge
thank you!
pavano should go to the NL like Pittsburgh or Houston he`d be fine there
“Is this Dr. Andrews the only sports doctor in the world?”
He’s the only orthopedist in the world.
lol, Shakespeare might be dead, but he’s still pretty appropriate to quote 100s of years later.
I think that makes him pretty cool.
“Yanks will pay off Pavano, and if he gives the Yanks a big discount with incentives, they take a chance on him. It all depends on his conscience.”
GB thinking the very same thing. It will be interesting to see how he responds if it comes down to that.
I like Pudge, alot. He is trying too hard. He`ll come around
Dont boo jeter people…hes only s ucked all year but dont dare boo him
Oh Jetes, not a fan of Burnett tonight, huh?
Next AB, imagine he’s a Ford Edge.
Captain Clutch!!
I’m obviously rooting for the Yankees, but it’s clear that we can make people think what we want to think about any of the players.
Derek Jeter, in a must-win game, is 0-3 with two strikeouts, a double play, and 4 runners left on base. It’s the difference of perception versus reality.
“I like Pudge, alot. He is trying too hard. He`ll come around”
And when is that going to happen? He’s been with the team for over a month.
Pudge -
I don’t know. I will always give “newcomers” a bye for a while, especially newcomers who join up in the middle of the season. Cripes people the Yankees court sometimes get a case of nerves and can’t produce.
I bet if Shakespeare was alive, he’d be blogging himself, lol.
Andrews is the best, right now. Frank Jobe and Robert Kerlan pioneered the TJ surgery were the best ever. Kerlan died about 10-12 years ago, but, Jobe still does a few, but, mainly he’s a consultant.
I didn’t know that Rolen was off the DL.
I wonder what Dr. Andrews rakes in a year.
Laura -
What happens when there is no more Dr. Andrews?
Angel -
I was just drawn to the tag behind your name – so, so true. But it sure is fun anyway.
Laura,
It looks like Matsui hasn’t done anything, but he really stretches the lineup. When’s the last time you saw Betemit or Gardner starting? The team really missed him and I think they’re more comfortable with him back and playing better as a result.
Good move by Alex to defer to Jeets on the pop up.
“Is this Dr. Andrews the only sports doctor in the world?”
There was a Sports Illustrated article about him that analyzed his practice around the time that Drew Brees had reconstructive shoulder surgery. It was a great read and it essentially had his comments after the procedure.
The article suggested that there was exactly one person who could have performed the procedure that Brees had – and they prayed in thanksgiving just outside the OR.
I don’t remember exactly when that article was published – but it opened my eyes to how skillful Dr. Andrews is.
paid by one of our enemies to stink it up
“It looks like Matsui hasn’t done anything, but he really stretches the lineup. When’s the last time you saw Betemit or Gardner starting? The team really missed him and I think they’re more comfortable with him back and playing better as a result.”
You’re right, mel. In the end, his presence probably does more good than harm. I just wish he’d get a hit every now and then.
Yep it is, Doreen. And there are many people on here who it doesn’t apply to at all – who are more than enough reason to keep posting here.
There is the first hit by Travis Snider. I am happy now. Yankees can win, I don’t care.
Snider a double-no scouting report on this rookie?
Snider looks like he came off a real farm. Hefty.
melky would of had that ; )
Nice catch by the X-Man!
NICE PLAY NADY
And Nady uses his extreme hotness to snag one. Great play, X-Man!
Reverend,
Matsui is 6 for his last 34, true. Arod is 8 for his last 34
x marks the spot
He is the Blue Jays future. This guy will be a star. Very mature for his age.
why u cut that off giambi???:(
I have never liked Scutaro. He’s a pest.
jeter needs to move to center, do da do da
jeter needs to move their now, all do da now
When did Yankee fans get so bitter? I have been away for far too long.
rios 2 runner
im callin it
Well — if you need Carl Pavano to pitch a shut out or you lose, you lose.
Why did Jason cut it off? to told the guy at first. He never would have gotten him out at thrid.
JB – nice hit and the kid looks like he can also field well!
3-0 Sox
dat was a strike booooooo
If you go out to MLB.com, they have some old footage of interviews with the Yankees about Maier’s catch. Jeter looks likes he’s 15 yrs old.
Good to see you back JB –
Since you are of the opinion that “Yankees can win, I don’t care.” I really hope to God that our boys make it happen.
glad i was wrong
STRIKE THREEE!!!!!!!
I’m calling an A-Rod bomb right here.
Laura -
I was just saying something similar to my husband – how on video of the ’96, ’97 etc. teams, Jeter looks like a baby. Time sure flies!
How many pitches has Pavano thrown?
Really great pitch to Rios. Good way to close out th inning.
He’s my idle!
I had my doubts about Pavano, but I have to say that he has impressed me. Good for him. Kevin
The Sux are not going to make it easy for us alas. Plus they have the vast majority of their remaining games at the green crapbox known as Fenway.
72 pitches, Angel
back to work bats
Pavano is the new Yankee ACE!
“I was just saying something similar to my husband – how on video of the ‘96, ‘97 etc. teams, Jeter looks like a baby. Time sure flies!”
Bernie looked really young too. Pettite didn’t. His look hasn’t changed at all.
Doesn’t Alex Rios basically own us? Nice to see a Yankee pitcher shut him down.
Very nice way for Carl to end the inning. As my daughter will tell you because I told her a thousand times while we were in Toronto, don’t root for Rios because he’s a Yankee killer!
“Doesn’t Alex Rios basically own us? Nice to see a Yankee pitcher shut him down.”
Him, Garret Anderson, Chone Figgins, David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez… Am I leaving anyone out?
♫ I want my Bobby back, Bobby back, Bobby back, Bobby back, Bobby back, Bobby back, Bobby back
I want my Bobby back, Bobby back, Bobby back, Bobby back -
Chili’s!!! ♫
Jeter needs to get off my team now,
even though he did hit a certain ALCS homerun caught by a certain Jeffrey Maier on my 21st birthday.
TKinDC:
This is about the Blue Jays future so getting more wins this season means nothing. A lot of Blue Jays fans want to finish third ahead of the Yankees, but I really don’t care. No one remembers that we finished second ahead of the Red Sox two years ago.
I have followed Travis since he was drafted and got to meet him last year at a social event when he was in Toronto. When I started talking to him, I didn’t even realize it was him until he said his name. Just a really nice kid who is very focused and can mash.
AROD WE NEED A BOMB NOWW
How many jacks does Alex need to catch Schmidt? Not sure he’s going to make it this year.
and cue the boo’s
Poor Arod. Seriously.
nothing new
PETE:The countdown lever was pulled by the grandchildren of former clubhouse manager Pete Sheehy. Not a dry eye in the house.
pete was actually funny!!!!
Those fans booing are morons and first rate a-holes. They are too stupid to realize that the more they boo, the worse he’s going to do.
Its nice to a player like that, you can really root for, JB.
its amazing how you can tell when giambis swinging well and when hes not
his swing tonight is not anything like yesterdays and it shows
Laura, he needs two more to tie Schmidt
Rafeal Furcal is neither a type a or type b free agent because of injuries. To improve their fielding and hitting they can trade damon in the off season and move jeter to center and have furcal lead off and play short. This move allows them not to give up draft picks and move jeter to center. Then they could sign Tex, Manny and Burnett and have a lineup of;
1-Furcal,SS
2-Jeter,CF
3-A-Rod,3B
4-Tex,1B
5-Manny,LF
6-Nady,RF
7-Matsui,DH
8-Posada,C
9-Cano,2B
Rotation
1.Joba
2.Wang
3.Burnett
4.Moose
5.Hughes
some 4-5 hitters.
Laura -
I thought catching Smitty was a given this season; I was wondering if he’d catch the next guy (Jackson?). C’est la vie.
It’s been that kind of season. Sigh.
WHAT PAVANO COMIN OUT?????????
GOOD JOB CARL!
I really hate to say this, but Pavano is a member of the baseball hotties club. He may be oft injured, but he’s got a cute face.
HOW MUCH PITCHED CARL HAD?
ANSWER PLZZ
“Laura, he needs two more to tie Schmidt”
I thought he was 12 away from Schmidt. Maybe it’s the guy ahead of Schmidt. I’m losing track.
HAHA LAURA WELL HE DOES LOL
Okay. Just looked it up.
ARod needs two more to catch Schmidt. At the risk of being presumptuous, he should still be able to do that this season. Reggie’s next, but he’s 17 away from him right now. Unless he gets REALLY hot, I don’t see that happening this season.
Pavano done after 72 pitches? Hmmm…..
I really don’t get the hatred for A-rod. He’s having another MVP season. If the Yankees make the playoffs (still a slim chance) he might win it.
“I have followed Travis since he was drafted and got to meet him last year at a social event when he was in Toronto. When I started talking to him, I didn’t even realize it was him until he said his name. Just a really nice kid who is very focused and can mash.”
JB – That is one of the things that is great about baseball – I’m delighted to hear that you had that experience.
The fact that teams like the BJ’s can keep their young talent (as part of the revenue sharing deals made) will help baseball around North America in the long run.
Burnett can’t handle the Toronto media, I have no idea how he will handle your people.
why is carl out?
maybe pavanos been traded
no reason to take him out
“Him, Garret Anderson, Chone Figgins, David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez… Am I leaving anyone out?”
I don’t know about recently but I’m pretty sure that Jim Thome used to annihilate us.
We should’ve signed Pavano a few years ago, would’ve been a good guy to have in the rotation… oh.. wait
72 pitches.. dang joe he is on my fantasy team…lol
Well, it looks like the stupidity of ballpark fans has returned. Looks a lot like the sports boards. Jeter with a GIDP and two strikeouts, Giambi with two strikeouts, and not a word. Rodriguez is the only problem, plus he causes the problems in the rotation.
BRUNEY SAVE THIS GAME 4 CARL
I don’t know why you take Pavano out here – what are we doing? saving his arm????
im going with trade
who is with me?
Did you guys see that the ruling against Cabrera from BAL for throwing at Alex was upheld? He’s out for 6 games. As poorly as he’s been pitching nowadays, BAL might actually be pleased. LOL!
Let him get his confidence back. Are they giving him an ovation??
bruney, the new lloyd!!
JB – let me also say that as a DC guy – the whole issue of baseball coming to DC was followed in the Toronto Globe and Mail – I would be interested to hear about your reflections on the transfer of that franchise.
Thanks!
Joe Girardi seriously thinks that he is Tony LaRussa. This is ridiculous!
ONLY 72 WHAT UP WIT U JOE GIRARDI?
Who’s pitching the 8th inning? Was Joba Chamberlain secretly activated?
this better be smart JOE!
PATRICK – DP-Rod is on pace for his fewest HRs, RBIs, and hits since 97 and you think thats MVP-caliber? I want some of whatever you’re smoking!
I vote trade too!
IDK DFOX
I HOPE
“Reggie’s next, but he’s 17 away from him right now.”
That’s it. I knew that he was away from someone in the double digits. Yeah, Reggie can rest easy until next season. No way Alex hits 17 with 28 to go.
someone call Joe and remind him this is not the NL please..
Its just a normal gameday thread on Lohud, GB7.
Bruney in now? Can’t squeeze out one more from Carl?
Ok
What’s Joe doing? All the praise about his bullpen management go to his head or something? He better hope the game doesn’t go extra innings.
CMON MARTE
Now Marte is in. ok
The countdown lever was pulled by the grandchildren of former clubhouse manager Pete Sheehy. Not a dry eye in the house.
still laughing pete, partly cause you are rarely funny
NICE JOB DAMASO
i hope Edwar dont come in
Rodriguez won’t win the MVP this year even if NYY does win. His numbers, while good considering the 17 games he was out, isn’t worthy of MVP. Hamilton or Quentin of Chicago will get it, as of right now.
I just came by to say those fans who boo Arod are a bunch of morons.
“Did you guys see that the ruling against Cabrera from BAL for throwing at Alex was upheld? He’s out for 6 games. As poorly as he’s been pitching nowadays, BAL might actually be pleased. LOL!”
Nice catch Laure – I missed it – Long overdue imho.
One of the YES announcers said that A-Rod has hit into 10 DPs in August, the most since 1974 (I think he said Matty Alou). Good job Alex…..
“Rodriguez is the only problem, plus he causes the problems in the rotation.”
It’s the money. The fans are holding that contract against him. The sad part is that even if A-Rod got a hit every time he was up at bat, it still wouldn’t be enough. They would still find something to complain about.
It’s a fact that we can’t trade Alex; that contract is the size of the Grand Canyon. But unless Alex has the kind of year that he did last year EVERY YEAR, he’s going to hear the boos and probably secretly wish that he was playing somewhere else.
i hope god bless america ends with the last season at this stadium
getting ridiculous
don’t understand giradi’s decision to take out pavano after throwing only 72 pitches, if he gets in trouble then u can go to the bullpen, but he should be able to go another inning, overmanaging on girardi’s part, imo
I WANT TO PULL THE ELVER SOOOO BAD U GET TO MEET GIRARDI!
aint katie smith dead??
maybe carl is pitching on 4 days rest?? i dont know, any of suggestions?
1. What is the previous record for most grounded into double plays by a team in one season?
2. Did we break that record in back in June or July?
Marte pitches the first 2 batters of the 8th, then Mo!
Yes it is Angel. Makes you wonder how many of these wizards are posting from the ballpark, doesn’t it?
Wow, did TB make a deal with the devil or something? How else do you explain their season?
TKinDC:
Montreal was screwed and it hurt the Blue Jays and baseball in Canada. They purposely let baseball fail in Montreal by not agreeing to a TV and radio deal. It hurt the Blue Jays because there is a perception of anti-Canadian bias in baseball. I am sure it is true with some reading this.
You have to remember that Toronto used to be considered a large market team (The GTA has one of the largest populations in North America). But after the strike, the loss of the Expos, the sale of Labatt’s to Interbrew (they cut the Blue Jays payroll from the highest in baseball to almost nothing) interest went down. It is coming back though thanks to Rogers.
I didn’t see that Globe article. By Jeff Blair?
please dont bring in varas!! bring back fransworth rather him shoot Joba cant throw one quick inning??
nadys swing looks like it did when he first got here
come on long… i can see it from here
Laura, Tampa Bay has been improving the past few years, right? Think back to all of the tough games they’ve given us during the last couple of seasons. Finally, their farm system has produced a bunch of stars and they made some smart trades this off-season, too. The pact with the devil is icing on the cake!
Laura – it must have been when they dropped “Devil” from their name and became the Rays!
“It’s a fact that we can’t trade Alex; that contract is the size of the Grand Canyon”
The following is a list of teams that might assume A-Rod’s contract:
.
;
.
Thank you for your attention.
Burnett won’t talk to the radio station that covers him because they have said “too many hurtful things”. I can’t imagine dealing with people who boo a guy like Alex Rodriguez!
“i hope god bless america ends with the last season at this stadium
getting ridiculous”
Did you read where a guy was thrown out of the park for going to the bathroom in the 7th? The Yankees feel that it is disrespectful to move during the moment of silence.
Do you think we can expect a hit from Pudge?
i saw that laura…complete joke
we go for a baseball game, not a religious ceremony
enough is enough
Good job by Giraldi, Toronto had now seen Carl 3 times & was starting to solve him. Keep them off balance, yanks cant afford to give any more games away, gotta play each game like its the last one.
Did you read where a guy was thrown out of the park for going to the bathroom in the 7th? The Yankees feel that it is disrespectful to move during the moment of silence.
Wait. What????
For real? Oh please
Laura, his contract is a BS excuse. I put it more on the fact that they are know-nothing idiots. They wouldn’t know a baseball from a snowball. They’re mainly corporate jackaszses trying to impress the clients.
PUDGE!!!!!!
answer is no vermont
“PATRICK – DP-Rod is on pace for his fewest HRs, RBIs, and hits since 97 and you think thats MVP-caliber? I want some of whatever you’re smoking!”
Um it doesn’t really matter what his stats are compared to the rest of his career. It matters what his stats are compared to the rest of the league. Go look at the VORP (thats Value Over Replacement Player) leaderboard. A-rod is #2 in the AL.
jeez why do you care so much who pulls the stupid lever, get over it already, they aren’t going to ask you.
Anybody notice Betemit hasn’t gotten into a game in over a week? How awesome is that!!
“Did you read where a guy was thrown out of the park for going to the bathroom in the 7th? The Yankees feel that it is disrespectful to move during the moment of silence.”
I also read security said he was intoxicated and standing on his seat yelling profanities and that’s why he was removed.
They are showcasing Pavano for a trade.
Putting him on waivers last night in conjunction with pulling him at 72 pitches/6 innings is all the evidence we need.
Whether or not he gets traded is a different story.
“Finally, their farm system has produced a bunch of stars and they made some smart trades this off-season, too.”
I know, but to make such a turnaround in such a short period of time is pretty amazing!
What I don’t get about the Rays is why they don’t have any fan support. I don’t think they draw 15K a night. They finally have a winning team and nobody gives a rat’s behind.
Bay with a 3RBI double. Dice K cruising. 7-0 Sox. Futile night for us Yankees fans.
“You have to remember that Toronto used to be considered a large market team (The GTA has one of the largest populations in North America). But after the strike, the loss of the Expos, the sale of Labatt’s to Interbrew (they cut the Blue Jays payroll from the highest in baseball to almost nothing) interest went down. It is coming back though thanks to Rogers.
I didn’t see that Globe article. By Jeff Blair?”
JB – You know a lot more about it than me – just recently an American iconic brand – Budweiser – was sold to Interbrew so the Cardinals (st. Louis) are in a similar boat – ) As a DC native we looked for franchises in trouble that might end up here – that is why when the MLB took over ownership of the Expos we followed the stories in the Globe & Mail.
I just don’t think the Expos drew crowds – but I don’t know.
Wow, Pudge has to be the worst automatic out the Yankees have had this season. Even when Giambi was an automatic out, he would throw in a HR once in a while. When Cano was an automatic out, he’d throw in some base hits.
When Pudge is an automatic out now, there are NO hits. There’s barely contact. When was the last time he flew out?
Laura – I read that article about that guy leaving during GBA to visit the facilities. His removal was attributed to an “edict” (for lack of better word) by George Steinbrenner himself. Kind of missing the point of America, isn’t it? That’s the problem with associating patriotism with the symbols of patriotism.
JB, the Canadians and so-called Montreal fans screwed themselves because even when they had some great young players, the people wouldn’t show up. They couldn’t afford to stay there. They tried for 35 years.
WHERE ARE THE PUDGE GUYS WHO WERE DEFENDING HIM AND SAID HE WILL BE A BIG ADDITION TO THIS TEAM?? OH, NOT HERE? OH OK
Molina, right now, spits all over pudge when it comes to all round talent and ability and i said it when he got here
Oh, man! Hasn’t Veras stunk lately? I don’t like this.
Pudge is a horrendous hitter and his D has been pretty below average also.
“Futile night for us Yankees fans.”
It is? You say that almost like the White Sox aren’t ahead of the Yankees. And Minnesota hasn’t played yet, so if they lose, there’s some more gain. The Yankees have to pass the White Sox or Minnesota eventually if they want to make the playoffs.
regarding that fan thrown out, someone who didnt know him but witnessed the scene, said he did nothing wrong and once again the cops were out of line
anyone who defends their actions and not allowing him to go to the bathroom is a dope
bring in mo joe
“Bay with a 3RBI double. Dice K cruising. 7-0 Sox. Futile night for us Yankees fans.”
So when exactly are the Crock Sox going to start missing Manny Ramirez? I predicted that they would and I’m still waiting.
bring in mo
Interbrew doesn’t understand the marketing opportunities (at least not in 1995) in baseball.
The Expos drew better than Washington this year. Much better than Tampa too. Donald Sutherland (and Keifer) had season tickets! lol
I hate to defend the Expos because I can’t stand Montreal and couldn’t stand the Expos but MLB screwed them.
The Yankees have to have tunnel vision – focus on their games one at a time. Just win one game. Then another game. If they look around too much, it won’t help.
The cops didn’t throw the guy out cause he had to use the bathroom. They threw him out because he cursed and disrespected the cops.
The Pudge trade will also cost us valued draft picks since Farnsworth would def reject arbitration and would get a free agent deal.
Oy vey Veras
You know I was listening to Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Duh on WCBS both wondering why Pavano was pulled (gee IDK waivers ?) but after Marte came in for Bruney as she spoke w. a twinkle in her voice, John said “But what are they going to do for the 8th inning ?” because Marte can’t pitch vs RHB and Mariano can’t keep going 2 innings. Do you know what this b***** said ? she said and I quote “Well in a few days it going to be Joba so no worries there”
If Joba finishes this year in the BP Cashman should be fired and GI Joe can go w/ him too !
To mess w/ the back and fourth of this, if he needs to build his pitches , here’s an idea pitch him in the minors !!! There is no sense in sticking him in a 3 to 4 times a week row , that WILL ACTUALLY JEOPARDIZE HIS CAREER !
“regarding that fan thrown out, someone who didnt know him but witnessed the scene, said he did nothing wrong and once again the cops were out of line
anyone who defends their actions and not allowing him to go to the bathroom is a dope”
Thats interesting, I read about that story, and on other blogs people have said that isn’t the case.
It honestly sounds to me like a combination of an idiotic fan, and overreacting stadium cops.
That’s interesting information. Montreal had some good teams over the years. I never understood how it went sour relatively quickly.
Speaking of patriotism, I was at the nationals game last night and I walked out of the bathroom during the Anthem to find that I was literally the only person moving in my field of vision. There were people frozen in salutes and I was fumbling with my fly.
I said that this was a bad idea.
take him out!!
Greenberet:
There were a lot of politics behind those decreased gates. When you don’t have a radio or TV contract, you aren’t going to draw fans!
OK, Snider is up. Let him swing!!!
Bunt-Hit-3 to 2
Veras does not have it tonite. Need to take him out right here.
But Brandon, relax -do we know yet exactly HOW they’re going to use him out of the bullpen? Maybe it will be more controlled like last season.
I went to Toronto, and I came back during an ab, not really realizing it. They stopped me from returning to my seat, you know what I waited till they let me go. I didn’t stomp around like a child.
angel and jennifer
it was on cbs
an innocent bystander saw the entire thing and said the fan did nothing wrong
who are we gonna believe, the cops or a fan?
ill go with the fan every time
“The Expos drew better than Washington this year. Much better than Tampa too. Donald Sutherland (and Keifer) had season tickets! lol”
I don’t think so – but I could be wrong. My understanding is that the Expos were drawing like the Rays.
Zooboy -
They must have heard you!
“They are showcasing Pavano for a trade.
Putting him on waivers last night in conjunction with pulling him at 72 pitches/6 innings is all the evidence we need.”
If so, I’d think they have conceded the season. It isn’t like we are loaded with starters.
they took him out yes
crap crap crap
If only this was next week and you knew the Yanks had Joba and Mo to close it out, but that is not the case right now.
Thanks Veras. Now to Edwar to give up a bomb
I just don’t get this. Pavano should have been out there for another inning, and then Girardi could have done all his little mixes and matches in the 8th inning when they actually needed relievers.
What about Mo now – with two on, no out. Then if he gets through go to Edwar with a clean slate next inning?
Mark Melchon better be as great as they say.Could use Joba tonight.
jennifer, what happened to you has to do with safety and not walking in front of people who are trying to watch the game
they do the same thing at hockey games
2 different situations
Snider is bunting.
Pudge, and I heard another fan say that he cursed.
Also I think that bystander was his friend.
Great job Veras!
Maybe not
Yeah, definately another inning for Pavano there. He had a good pitch count I think. Mix and match in the 8th, not the 7th.
“If Joba finishes this year in the BP Cashman should be fired and GI Joe can go w/ him too !
”
Poor Brandon must still be looking for a Sawx board – troll on little one!
Jennifer -
I noticed that in Toronto when we were there – the ushers were very in control of when you got up and when you went back to you seat. You know, it definitely helps. Those who are actually interested in watching the game don’t have to deal with seating issues during an at-bat.
If only this was next week and you knew the Yanks had Joba and Mo to close it out, but that is not the case right now.
I agree a maximum effort role for 3 to 4 days a week to build more shoulder stiffness hell why not.
not true jen but either way, can we end the god bless america stuff? its a baseball game, not a chruch or government event
“angel and jennifer
it was on cbs
an innocent bystander saw the entire thing and said the fan did nothing wrong
who are we gonna believe, the cops or a fan?
ill go with the fan every time”
I’ll go with people who I know to be credible, and not some random fan looking for his 15 minutes of fame on CBS, actually.
*shrug*
I just assumed they did that at every MLB park
i expect mo to make this kid look foolish
Oh I agree with it. I wish they’d do it at YS. I was just pointing out that other places do similar things.
oh its edwar im so into the fan/cop debate
A great time for Veras to go into the tank.
Girardi is managing every game like it’s the 7th game in the WS.
He made him look foolish!
angel, the guy didnt even get on the news
nice try tho
The fan was a jerk. You respect America and the troops and stand, be quiet, and hold your hand over your heart.
ENTER SANDMAN!
Yes he did.
I wonder if Pavano told Joe that he was spent and preferred not to continue. We’ll have to wait for the post game to find out.
And just so you know, I’d be against it and agree with you, if I thought it was true. I’m not so much a fan of GBA, but I understand and respect what it means to people.
But there are several things about that story that just don’t sit right with me and seem a little bit too coincidental..
Says it all about the season that another starter couldn’t go 7 innings.
JB, it works both ways…when you don’t have fans, you won’t get tv and radio contracts. No doubt that the Quebec government has a lot of idiots in charge. The fact that the official language is French in a predominently English speaking country, where their biggest business partners also speak English is the ultimate in stupidity. Give Quebec back to the FROGS and let them whither on the vine. It should only take about 1 year.
bud, thats the spirit…so much for freedom and rights!!
its a baseball game you clown, not a military service!!
get lost
Pudge- look it is 20 seconds of your life. If you don’t like the song and have to use the bathroom you get up before the inning is over, or right when it ends.
Mo already? We he be available tomorrow?
The White Sox have two hits. Javier Vasquez threw over 100 pitches in 5 and two thirds.
On our other site we always refer to Mo as Moses!
One pitch, one out.
Listen to the applause after it is played, and the people singing along and tell me people still don’t respect it being played. If they didn’t they’d leave in between innings like they do every other.
fair enough angel
Didn’t Scutaro homer off Rivera earlier in the season?
It was only Pavano’s second start in 1 1/2 years. Maybe he was tired. Pitchers will tell you that it takes a while to get their legs under them and build up stamina.
jb- You can only worry about today. Tomorrow could be a blow out and you might not need him.
“angel, the guy didnt even get on the news
nice try tho”
did you forget what you just posted above? lol
2007 Trader.
I never liked Scutaro. He’s a pest.
Greenberet:
A little more complicated than that. When I said politics, I was talking about Jeffery Loria. The TV contract was offered but the Expos turned it down.
“Didn’t Scutaro homer off Rivera earlier in the season?”
That was last season.
jennifer, fair thought
but check the lines at concession stands and restrooms during gba…yeah, most people participate but in all reality no one would care if they didnt have it
angel, he didnt get on the news just a mention that he supports the fan and his story
angel- First of all the story makes no sense, if he had to use the bathroom he was already down, they aren’t going to prevent him from going down the tunnel. Smells very fishy to me.
And this jerk who just ran on the field should be banned for life. He is holding up Mo.
Just like the idiot who fell onto the screen above the plate. We had the pitcher on the ropes, and right in the middle of Jeters ab he jumped. Momentum changed.
MOSES!
whats the delay?
Nice work by Edwar and Mo to get out of the jam.
is there no one in AAA we can replace varas with?
It’s times like this when you say “So what if Mo struggles in tie games. He’s still ours!!”
fan ran out naked on the field
pudge, I saw him interviewed on tv.
“What I don’t get about the Rays is why they don’t have any fan support. I don’t think they draw 15K a night. They finally have a winning team and nobody gives a rat’s behind.”
Laura, I think that sums up Florida well.
So it looks like I didn’t miss much.
“is there no one in AAA we can replace varas with?”
Veras has only been struggling very recently. He was lights out for most of the season.
I hate getting home late, but it’s nice to see the Yankees beating AJ!
Way to go Mo!
total class at yankee stadium!
JB, it’s also true that the only contracts they were offered was to French speaking radio and TV, right?
I can’t believe AJ is still in. He will blow up this inning.
George spends 200 million dollars on the team and he wants GBA. Enough said.
JB, why isn’t Zaun their primary catcher anymore?
For running on the field, you should get the death penalty. It’s a completely calculated and planned crime, and there shouldn’t be any tolerance. Simple: if you run on the field, you die.
“Laura, I think that sums up Florida well.”
Maybe it’s just Tampa. Perhaps they’d do better in another city.
I have no problem with playing “God Bless America” – it’s the Yankees’ ballpark and business. I do think it’s a bit disconcerting that they take the “respect” thing so seriously. People should be able to go to the bathroom.
Is there a law against going to the toilet during GBA?
I think it was both. TSN and CBC.
jennifer, i only saw them mention him
did the fan really run on the fan naked?????
When did Cameo’s hit “Candy” become Jeter’s theme song?
DFox for president!
seeing ER eat all of his stupid words = priceless !!
.
.
….HEY ICEBAG, go crawl back under that rock you came out from under and do us all a favor ! JackRabbit !
I think it’s official that Jeter doesn’t not hit Burnett well.
no boos for jeter????? interesting!!!!!
bronx, apparently there is from what i read
joke if you ask me
MVPavano looked good again?
another clutch at bat by the captain!
5 relief pitchers ? We do have a game tomorrow right ? Right ?
Don’t know YES didn’t show him. (the guy running on the field)
are they doing the wave???
yankee fans should be ashamed of themselves
Trisha:
Because Cito is a moron. He doesn’t like Zaun’s arm, but he makes fewer outs than Barajas.
I thought the Yankees would have traded for Zaun after Posada went down. He would have cost less than Farnsworth and be just as effective. Irod is the most overrated catcher for the past few years while Zaun was underrated.
DFOX
You mean like put snipers up in the rafters and assume everyone who runs on the field is a terrorist?
What Minnesota does later on the west coast is the only game of consequence for the Yankees. The only team that could be gained on.
“no boos for jeter????? interesting!!!!!”
Jeter’s 4 rings have apparently made him immune to boos…for now.
Burnett keeps adding zero’s to his contract for next year.
Cervelli went 3 for 4 tonight in AA pushing his BA to .328
Florida has a lot of people, but, the majority that are baseball fans have their teams located in other states where they came from. They also get their baseball from Spring Training and the fact that since so many are on fixed incomes they go to one of the 30 minor league teams located in Florida. The Tampa Yankees draw 7000-9000 a night.
Burnett would look damn sexy in a yankees uniform
“I thought the Yankees would have traded for Zaun after Posada went down. ”
From what I read, his name did come up. Apparently, they went with the markee name and the future Hall of Farmer. So far, that hasn’t worked out too well.
Veras needs some time off… Joe used him 3 days in a row in Baltimore, he needs 3-4 days off.
JB, so essentially Zaun has lost his job as primary catcher permanently? It’s sure good for us because I remember Zaun always being a tough out for us. But I also remember him as being one heck of a catcher. Wow.
Laura:
The Yankees are like the Leafs that way. Going for the name brand over logic.
“Burnett would look damn sexy in a yankees uniform”
Have you looked at Burnett? He doesn’t look sexy in anything!!!
if mo blows this, you know the seasons over
2 more to go.
“I think it’s official that Jeter doesn’t not hit Burnett well.”
What Yankee has?
Damn that cutter is nasty!
He was allowed to go to the bathroom, but he was clearly cursing and trying to make a scene during the singing of “God Bless America”
In short, he’s one of theose “provacteurs” the police and military folks have to deal with who try to get “reactions” then scream “persecution” or racism” or whatnot when they get what’s coming to them.
In this case: an ejection.
Good riddance.
Brandon, Joba hasn’t pitched in how many weeks? He can’t go 80-90 let alone 100 pitches. He needs to be built back, and they’re not going to do it in the minors. My guess is that he goes to the Arizona Fall League to build up his IPs for the year, to get him up for next season.
Vernon Wells scares me. Not a lot in life does – but he does.
“The Yankees are like the Leafs that way. Going for the name brand over logic.”
Pudge was also batting over .300 at the time. In theory, it made sense. In practice, it’s been a bust.
I thought we were going to sign Zaun a few years back when his deal with the Jays fell apart.
If you don’t mind some adult language, the folks at http://www.firejoemorgan.com have a great take on a Toronto columnist who thinks Burnett’s have a career year (with a 4.50 ERA).
“You mean like put snipers up in the rafters and assume everyone who runs on the field is a terrorist?”
YES! That’s even better than I imagined. I imagined they would have to take the person into custody and give them the electric chair or something. But with your idea, why wait that long? Just end it right when they set foot on the field. When can we have the snipers implemented?
“DFox for president!”
HAH, and Yankee Trader can be my policy implementer. More cracker jack policies in baseball are needed. Like if an umpire makes a call without consulting any other umpires, and two or more cameras show that it was wrong, as per vote by announcers, then the umpire loses a finger.
Have you looked at Burnett? He doesn’t look sexy in anything!!!
I don’t know Laura that 97 mph and 86 mph slider sure would look sexy in anything
Travis:
He is the village idiot. Richard Griffen is his name.
terry, believe what you’d like
“I don’t know Laura that 97 mph and 86 mph slider sure would look sexy in anything”
The problem is that he only uses those pitches effectively against us. He’s got a 4.5 ERA against everyone else.
kay was about to say yankees win
Brandon, Joba hasn’t pitched in how many weeks? He can’t go 80-90 let alone 100 pitches. He needs to be built back, and they’re not going to do it in the minors. My guess is that he goes to the Arizona Fall League to build up his IPs for the year, to get him up for next season.
What essentially is going to happen is what he did early in the year in the transition to SP role, it doesn’t benefit him or the team. If your building him from 45 to 65 to 85 to 100 do it in the minors.
Now Overbay is someone I wouldn’t mind us getting to play 1B.
we won the opening game of a series? at home no less?
its on like donkey kong!!
Terry, that’s not the version of the story I heard, but I wasn’t there, so who knows? If I could afford a ticket to one of the last games of the season, I’d test the rules and make a beeline for the bathrooms right as Kate Smith opened her mouth.
The day my heart will break is the day we no longer have Mo. I can’t imagine it.
Great way to start the weekend. Pavano is 2-0 (who would have thought it!)
See you all tomorrow.
Girardi managed his little butt off. Good job Joe!
How sad is it that us winning 2 games in a row is a serious cause for celebration?
Minaya should be calling Cash right now and offering a prospect for Pavano.
That’ll happen in a contract year.
Yankees beat him though so his value goes down the TINIEST bit.
Great game.
Great pitching on both sides.
Yankees Win!
GB7, you are correct that Florida has many “immigrants” from other states. We follow other non-Florida teams. There is another reason for low attendance at Dolphin Stadium. The Stadium is far away from the most populated cities in South Florida. It costs an arm and a leg to drive and park at the Stadium, That is without counting the tickets to get in. You take the subway to get to Yankee Stadium. That is out over here. You have to spend a LOT of money to get to the stadium.
Which current Yankees player would you most like to meet and talk to for a few minutes?
Mariano is my clear choice.
brandon the minor league season is almost over…what other choice do they have
Laura:
Overbay will be available because the Jays plan to put Lind at first and Snider in left.
We’re lucky to get to see Mariano Rivera pitch.
god bless mo
The problem is that he only uses those pitches effectively against us. He’s got a 4.5 ERA against everyone else.
We have good teachers.
“its on like donkey kong!!”
I like that commercial. Good acting by people who are sports stars.
Alright, party people! I’m off. Day game tomorrow.
Goodnight all and God Bless the Yankees!
Travis – Mo would be mine unequivocally.
Why not let Joba pitch in the majors as he gets length?
The minor league season is over soon anyway and I’d rather see Joba pitch 60-90 pitches in relief than in Scranton.
“Overbay will be available because the Jays plan to put Lind at first and Snider in left.”
If we don’t get Tex, that could be an option. Of course, many think that we need to leave first open for Posada, but we’ll see.
‘Night!!
DFox, you are a no-nonsense commissioner.
JB, it’s amazing how every village idiot somehow ends up with a newspaper column or radio show. I don’t understand it.
EdFL.
curiously what does it cost to park?
does carl pavano now have exactly 2 more wins than ian and phil combined???
yay! We won
And the folks at http://majorleaguejerk.com/200.....d-if-i-do/
Pretty much shred the Fire Joe Morgan guy.
I agree.
Veras looks fatigued, give him a few days off. Then slide him back into the 7th.
And we need to stop using MO for so many 4-5 out saves.
Let Marte/Bruney be the left/right platoon in the 8th but use them for full innings often to so we don’t have to use both of them. Bruney can also pitch 2 innings some nights.
Edwar the fireman to get out of jams. And I guess Aceves is the new long man.
The minor league season is over soon anyway and I’d rather see Joba pitch 60-90 pitches in relief than in Scranton.
We saw Take 1 on this, do you remember the W/L during that experiment ?
Brandon, I understand what you’re saying, it’s just that I think they want their best pitchers up there, and if Joba can only give them a couple innings now, they’ll take it. But I agree, this year or not, they can’t screw him up. It’s just that I don’t think this will do that. If he goes to the AFL, he’ll undoubtedly be starting there.
I still believe
Brandon,
your thoughts on pudge now after a month of his horrific play??
looking forward to it
It is unbelievable how masterful Rivera is. Terrific game.
Kevin
jenn,
it costs 25 bucks at a dolphins game and 10 bucks at a marlins game. I dont think its an arm and a leg. I parked at the coliseum in oakland for a game last week and it cost 15 bucks.
speaking about Scranton Victor Zambrano was b**** slapped tonight
Um, we’re debating what to do with Joba again?
Please for the love of Harlan let every inning he pitches for the next 5 weeks (or more) be on the big club. I really need another 11 innings out of Joba!
And piggybacking him with someone else on a short leash would be fine, better than having Rasner go 3 innings and blow out the bullpen.
Brandon,
your thoughts on pudge now after a month of his horrific play??
looking forward to it
Calls a good game but looks like Cole Hammels when called to PH at the plate
I still can’t believe Pettitte was so bad the other night.
VtYankeefan, something makes me think you’re not alone!
Great game. Later y’all.
Nick-
Saw Sparky, Goose and -Mo is the best!
There is no way Joba is throwing those innings in Scranton. No chance in heck.
Yay, a win.. vs Burnett.
Hey, Eek, I was unaware of that site. Thanks for sharing it with me. I enjoy reading firejoemorgan a) because I want Joe Morgan fired and b) I can’t stand village idiots writing in the sports pages, either.
Lets Go Carl Pavano \O/
Admit he did us justice today, bearing his past injuries he did give us a win that we needed today.
brandon, hahaha
how bout a simple “i was wrong”
got that in ya?
Trade Pavano and Giambi NOW…
Pudge is absolutely brutal. He’s a Melky. New term for “automatic out”.
I do too, Nick. He’s on my fantasy team.
Ed, I have to complete agree with you on the cost and traspotation issues. I go to the Yankee games in Tampa and the parking costs have always been 25 dollars. Hotdogs/burgers are about 4.50 and cokes are 3 dollars. Beer is 7.50 and up. Throw in hotel costs and 35.00-50.00 for a ticket and you need to take out a second mortgage to take in a couple of games….and, that’s for one person.
How many think Pavano will be traded this weekend and where?
I would re-sign Pavano if he accepts a short term deal. Why not? He’s better than Hughes or Kennedy.
***transportation***
“brandon, hahaha
how bout a simple “i was wrongâ€
got that in ya?”
Fat chance from Brandon. He’s still going on about how they should have got Jeff Keppinger to play SS and Erik Threets to pitch the 8th. Besides his trashing of the X Man.
can delgado be the hero again?
I would re-sign Pavano if he accepts a short term deal. Why not?
He should be playing for free !
The Mets just won the East with that hit.
can delgado be the hero again?
Nope but Beltran can
I would take Pavano on a short term deal, but I’m thinking week to week. Which would benefit him, he might get a full 6 days extra pay depending on where he is in the cycle when he gets hurt again.
Gregg shows what having a terrible closer does to a team. You got to be kidding.
Teddy (saw your post so before I go..) – I heard Andy’s postgame interview and he said everything he could short of saying the umpire was a horse’s ass. That flippin Massachusetts-born loser umpire totally screwed with Yankee pitchers. Andy spent the entire game trying to figure out the strike zone because the fool had a different one for Andy than he did for Wakefield. At some point all of those extra pitches catch up with you, as did the walks that were really strike outs. I think Andy was extremely frustrated. I don’t know that a Yankee pitcher alive could have won with that umpire behind the plate, other than Mo maybe if he could go 9 innings.
bel-tron with a grannie in the 9th
cohen called it like it was a playoff game
Anyone advocating bringing Pavano back here should refrain from posting and leave it to the adults.
so nick, are you saying brandon is often wrong but never admits it?
cool dude i guess
And now the Marlins are finished. So much LaDuca’s vow to haunt his old team
Blame the umpires, Trisha?
Come on now. Andy and you are better than that.
Curse Pudge, exactly.
Nick in SF, you are a humorous cat.
the marlins have so many good young arms in the pen, why is washed up gregg still the closer?
i remember he used to be the only angels pitcher we hit.
…and while I’m at it, re-sign Abreau(who probably deserves to be batting cleanup down the stretch)
First off I do admit when I’m wrong, this whole blog was there when I said I take back the Nady comment, Keppinger it’s funny I wanted him as a utility guy, he’d be a better option than Bet is fielding and hitting wise. This Nick character speaking on behalf of me I have never seen on this board and rather than answer to trolls I choose to ignore them.
Mo has a lot of time to rest this October.
brandon,
no retraction on pudge??
sad
Mets-Cubs is going to be a classic series
Santana-Zombrano
Perez-Harden
Pelfrey-Dempster
Pedro-Lilly
Beltran, Wright, Reyes, Delgado, Church
Soriano, Lee, Ramirez, Soto, Fukudome
Wrigley-Shea, NY-Chi Town
Wow great game by Pavano tonight, just got home and was looking at the recap. Now if only he doesn’t stub a toe or something…
Also, I was looking at the Sawx game recap – since when is Dice-K able to throw 8 innings of 2-hit, 2-BB ball? That guy is a monster.
That’s fine:
Guess what?
The NYPD and Stadium security won’t stop you because they won’t care.
Just don’t make a ruckus and TRY to get yourself thrown out of the stadium with your buddies then claim that you were thrown out because…
“I was minding my business on the john when these ‘fascist’ pigs threw me out because Kate was singing “God Bless America”"
Whether you or Peter Abraham want to stand during the song is nobody else’s concern.
News Flash: Whether other people want to stand during that same song is also none of your concern.
SIT IN YOUR SEAT (if you go to baseball games) during the song and be counted. Or go to the bathroom. Or be a coward and stand during the song PRETENDING that you actually like the fact it’s being sung (that’s what this is REALLY about).
I really don’t care what you do.
But if you make an a$$ of yourself and try to disrupt families who want to enjoy their evening at the game, you can expect somebody in blue to ask you to leave.
exactly ER
the 10 game road trip will finish us off, so might as well give MO a lot of work now because he will have plenty of rest.
brandon,
no retraction on pudge??
sad
I was wrong about Pudge.
Teddy read the game thread from Andy’s game and then you can decide. I don’t think there’s a person who posted who wasn’t ballistic about the umpire’s calls. And you usually don’t get virtually everyone going on that long about umpire’s calls.
So yeah, I’m willing to say that the umpire screwed enough with Andy’s game that Andy ended up having to grind out just about every out. That would catch up with anyone. Andy is a pitcher who never shirks responsibility about his pitching. We all know he is extremely self critical. Andy’s response was that he felt really good out there and was throwing his pitchers where he wanted to. Not hard to figure out the unspoken.
Josh, the box score might be misleading. As Pete mentioned, there were quite a few hot shots off of Pavano that his fielders tracked down.
how about we bat A-ROD 3RD and ABREU 4th for 1-2 games?
hey didn’t A-Rod bat 3rd in his first Yankee games in 04-05?
with Jeet batting leadoff, Sheffield batting 2nd?
THERE YOU GO!!
GIVE IT UP FOR BRANDON EVERYONE!
good job brandon
Watching the Marlins struggle vs Luis Ayala is a trip
That’s fine:
Guess what?

Ayala was a great pickup for them
Terry, I understand some of your points. I’m just not as wound up about this as some people, I guess.
“Teddy read the game thread from Andy’s game and then you can decide. I don’t think there’s a person who posted who wasn’t ballistic about the umpire’s calls.”
Trish, that game wasn’t lost because of an umpire. As bad as he was, Andy was nearly as bad. Yankees lost that game because they couldn’t hit when they needed too, couldn’t play defense, and had the 2nd best starting pitcher.
Blake Lively? Pete, that is so sexist!!
Fredo, we’ll agree to disagree.
Ayala was a great pickup for them
is*
Pavano
I escaped a few hard hits with good plays…..I threw more fastballs and tried to get the 1st out… Tonight was a great win….It was work for me to get the ball down today but the defense was there…I always pitch like I don’t have the lead, it helps me keep an edge….I’m having fun but we have alot of hard work ahead, we have a job to do….I’m not dominant, we are winning as a team… I respect Joe’s decision to take me out, he’s the manager.
“Since anything is now possible, I’m going to call Blake Lively and see if she wants to go to Vegas for the weekend.”
Pete: If anything is truly possible, don’t waste another minute. Call Leryn Franco instead of Blake Lively.
You know, Girardi’s answer about why Pavano came out in the 6th just wasn’t that convincing. In fact his answers about how Pavano must be feeling about the outing sounded weird.
It makes me wonder if something is up. It would make no sense since we need starting pitching badly and you don’t want to take on a new pitcher who needs to learn what it’s like to pitch for the Yanks.
Yankees lost game, ump helped.
Mike Jacobs would sure be a good pick up in the offseason, his strength he hits the low pitch well.
Magic # is at 23. One less that yesterday. Their fate isn’t totally in their hands.
Rasner’s due for a strong game.
Hi Guys,
I am a Yankee fan in St. Pete. There are many reasons for the lack of fans.
1. The Trap excuse me The Trop is in St. Petersburg, FL not Tampa so Tampa fans go see the Tampa Class A Yankees or stay home so they dont have to cross Tampa Bay and go over the Howard Franklin Bridge. It is psychological barrier most people in Tampa have. The drive is only an extra 15-20 min but too far for most Tampons. By the way there is no toll on the Franklin and the parking at The Trop is free if you have 4 or more in your vehicle and $10 for everyone else.
2. Half the fans are transplants from other major cities like New York and Boston and they come to root for their teams. I suspect many of those fans like myself will not go back to the Trop because of the hostility the core toothless Rays Fans have against other fans rooting the teams their Grandfathers and Fathers rooted for. The introduction of Cow Bells to help drown out the cheers of other fans takes away from a Major League Experience so a lot of fans are staying away.
3. Atmosphere, Going to the Trop is like going to the County Fair, must be the Cow Bells.
4. The economy in Tampa Bay is not that good a lot of people have lost their jobs and/or in danger of losing their homes. The lure of cheap living has been erased by skyrocketing real estate taxes and homeowner insurance.
Side note. The big Newspaper writers of The St. Petersburg Times dont like it when ESPN etc call the team the Tampa Rays the correct name is Tampa Bay Rays. Since the people from Tampa are more interested in pre season Buc football than the St. Petersburg Tampa Bay rays I can see their point
“Fredo, we’ll agree to disagree.”
Which, of course, is fine. That umpire was especially bad that night, but it bothers how many nights fans have let the Yankees and their piss poor defense and clutch hitting off the hook. This team is exactly where they should be based on their play. This team needs a hard kick in the ass. I suspect they’ll get it in the offseason.
Look on the bright side
If Rasner gets lit up tomorrow, we get to see the Mexican Gangster live in action!
“The drive is only an extra 15-20 min but too far for most Tampons.”
Well that’s funny.
BTW the importance of having a good calling catcher watching the bottom of the ninth w/ Cancel calling Ayala’s pitches my goodness was that some ugly calling, Ayala’s strength is the sinker on 2-2 he calls a slider inside which Ayala hung and that was almost the game vs Cantu, on 3-2 he did it again and lucked out when the tying run went from 1B to 3B instead of 2B to H.
If you know a Mets fan by damn Mylanta tonight.
buy them *
“Mike Jacobs would sure be a good pick up in the offseason, his strength he hits the low pitch well.”
His weakness would be he doesn’t get on base 72% of the time….unless he’s facing lefties…..then is weakness is he doesn’t get on base 75% of the time.
DAAAAAAA YANKEES WIN
Atleast Cancel didn’t call for FBs so he could throw out the runners.
Congrats to Carl Pavano on a job well done!
I think Pavano is the perfect guy for Cashman to practice trading while the player’s value is at it’s highest. It’s not one of Cash’s strong suits.
So long Carl, we hardly knew ya.
must sweep or go home
“Congrats to Carl Pavano on a job well done!”
That was big. Keeps the life support machine breathing for them.
You think Pavano’s going to be traded before Monday?
Atleast Cancel didn’t call for FBs so he could throw out the runners.
Pudge ain’t doing that, I mean he can’t hit for sh** but Cancel nearly caused them the game there.
Mike Jacobs can hit homers, but on defense, you’d be better off with Giambi.
Dice-K has a chance to get 20 wins
“Atleast Cancel didn’t call for FBs so he could throw out the runners.”
To be fair, Pudge only did that in Detroit. Here, he just concedes the stolen base.
“Mike Jacobs can hit homers, but on defense, you’d be better off with Giambi.”
Better off offensively too. Jacobs has a .280 OBP. He makes Giambi look like Gehrig.
Mike Jacobs can hit homers, but on defense, you’d be better off with Giambi.
Not sure I’d agree w/ that.
Ayala hurt his quad tonight. Would that make Pavano a need ?
“Dice-K has a chance to get 20 wins”
Matsuzaka has pitched very well this month, averaging nearly 7 IP a start, but his season on the whole is a rather good explanation on why wins is not a very good measure of a pitcher.
Nice job, Pavano. Thank you for taking time from your busy schedule of driving expensive sports cars and being immersed in quivering, viagra-charged orgies with firm-bodied vixens to show up and play ball for a change. Now do it for every 5th game until you leave after this season’s over. And don’t forget to thank the Steinbrenners for all that money before you go.
The skinny on Pavano has been: If healthy he’s good at pitching … it’s the ‘if healthy’ part he’s not good at.
I can’t kill Cashman for the Pudge trade… he was exactly the type of player it appeared we needed.
A guy that has been a winner everywhere, had playoff success, considered a leader, wanted to come here, likes the spotlight, clutch hitter, and a guy who was hitting .385 since June and a good average hitter who puts the ball in play who could be the perfect role player for us.
Too bad he has transformed into Kelly Stinnett overnight.
“Thank you for taking time from your busy schedule of driving expensive sports cars and being immersed in quivering, viagra-charged orgies with firm-bodied vixens to show up and play ball for a change”
I have to admit, I’m a little particular about minimizing my time away from these activities myself.

You mean Joh Flatherty
No scratch that Will Nieves
Hey, guys.
Just got in, nice to see a dubya when everyone assumed Burnett would beat us.
Just read through the last part of the thread and I normally don’t complain (lol), but why was one person being an ass the whole thread?
First one guesses who I’m talking about gets a prize.
“Just got in, nice to see a dubya when everyone assumed Burnett would beat us.”
Wouldn’t say the Yankees beat Burnett as much as I would the Yankees pitching and, dare I say, defense beat the Jays hitters.
couple op things from tonights game as I just got home.
first dont like the crack about pete sheehey family pulling the lever. He might not have meant a great deal to the fans but he meant a great deal to the Yankees and a guy who probably spent a lot of time away from his family working for the yankees it probably meant a lot to them to pull the lever. We can all agree that the Yankees have not handled the lever thing the right way but no need in my opinion to crack on the them because of it.
I have come to believe that the booing of Arod by the fans is just a complete and utter joke, Is he having not a good season yes but they booed him when he lead off the 2nd inning and grounded to short yet Jeter who was bad all night get away scott free. Yes I know you cant compare the two in terms of Yankee history but fans need to get real nd not take all of their frustration of the season out on Arod that is the easy way.
They showed a stat on the board tonight after showing the Boston highlights from yesterday that the Yankees LEAD the major leagus with come from behind wins. Who knew?? That stat surprised me.
Sitting in the bleachers versus my regular seats really is a trip and you pretty much see everything and tonight I saw it all. a couple was married yes actually married in the bleachers during the game with priest and all. Of course they got yelled out for standing up and the people behind them couldnt see the game so it was typical bleacher style.
Back again tomorrow this time in regular seats not sure I can survive Pavano and Rasner back to back.
LOL. Chad is now Chad Ocho Cinco. Doesn’t he know that’s not even the right way to say it? The football player formerly known as Chad Johnson is so outrageous he’s actually pretty funny.
Mel, I believe he took that name to advertise his IQ.
Fredo – Good point. Maybe he’s smarter than I gave him credit for after all!

So I was looking at avaiable FAs for ’09 ….
Nothing coming behind home plate, unless you want to sign someone over 30. Would any of them worth signing actually sign for onnly two years or a year plus an option year?
First base has Tiexiera in play course, and Blalock (age 28) has a club option with a cheap buyout. Everybody esle is over 30. Some decent ones, yes, but over 30, so be careful.
Lots of unspectacular options at P and OF, though there are a few obvious front line starters and decent (if not old) OFs. And Clemens is actually listed as a FA. Oh oh oh lets all ask Cashman to get him!
Not much on the waiver wire currently. Maybe good to try and get a whole month out of Pavano instead of a mediocre position player in a waiver trade.
85 in spanish is ochenta y cinco
ocho cinco is 8 and 5, individually.
ha ha ha
This is what the world has to deal with in people like Johnson.

On May 5, 2007, Ocho Cinco was sued for allegedly not giving away a Lexus that was supposed to be raffled off. The suit added two plaintiffs that claimed that they have won trips from Ocho Cinco (one to Europe; one to Hawaii), that Ocho Cinco never awarded.
Wow Blalock sucks. His avereage is around the Giambi Line.
Just got to my dads house after the game.. was in the Rf bleachers, 1st time..
yanks still can’t hit, pavano gave up a lot of long outs, and they won. Hell any win is good, the offense is still on fire. Arod I think 10 DP’s in August the most for any month in baseball.
Mo saved the Yanks for a change…

He use to be better than that post injuries he’s tailed off
Finally, some Hughes news. Check out Kepler’s blog @ the Times. Also a funny entry on Jeter’s retirement plans. Did you guys know that Ellsbury kept Giambi’s game winning ball from yesterday?
“Mo saved the Yanks for a change…”
