Will they still be in anywhere close to contention when they return?

What are you talking about? Are you saying that they are right now?
Don't be ridiculous - at coolstandings.com the Yankees make the playoffs in 1.2% of their simulations...ONE POINT TWO PERCENT! Keep hoping, fine...but don't be unrealistic. That's my take at least.

I watched the Dodgers game last night. I'm a former left coaster so when LAD is on TV here at a reasonable hour and not conflicting with a NYY game I like to catch up with how my long-ago team is doing. They seemed to be having a wonderful time trampling the D-Backs 8-1. Not a great season but they're a lot different this year than last, and their fans seem to be loving it. When interviewed between innings Torre was talking about the specifics of bringing the youngsters along and he and Donnie seemed quite caught up in the game and the overall process. After watching the game I had an envious moment, not about having Joe or Donnie back or about the team itself or even the win, but about the whole lively, involved scene in the dugout during the game.

Late-season competition! I miss being in it.

Torre is no fool. He wasn't going to accept a one year incentive laden contract w/ the pitching staff question marks. Little did he know that the offense would be the bigger question mark. Why not go to a division where 500 ball gets you a playoff run in September. Genius.... Oh yeah, unless Torre has Zimmer sitting next to him you can forget him winning anything ever again.

Pete,

In your estimation, how many games better are the Yanks this year if Mr. Torre is still the manager?

Just wondering.

ROAD TRIP :

- the Tigers couldn't care less.

- the Rays will be out to prove they're no flukes.

- the Mariners couldn't care less.

- the Angels will use the Yankees as a September tune-up.
