Plenty to play for: Like third place

Peter Abraham
September
6

Toronto beat Tampa Bay in extra innings this afternoon. The Jays now have the same record as the Yankees, 75-66.

So the Yankees need a win tonight to avoid falling into fourth place in the AL East. The Yankees have not been in fourth place this late in the season since 1992.

The good news, of course, is that Sidney Ponson is on the mound.

Go, Yankees. If this doesn’t spur them on, I give up. :)

“I don’t know who those guys are, but I’m sure others will appreciate your wit there!”

Hmmmm, I don’t know if you’re joking or not. Bobby Thomson (I added an extraneous P before) and Ralph Branca are only the protagonists in the most famous play in baseball history. You can look it up!

Can someone please explain why Ponson is still in the rotation???

“Can someone please explain why Ponson is still in the rotation???”

Because he’s got a pulse and is breathing.

Not possible for the Yankees to win tonight. It is september 6th and the Yankees are in 4th, so, I guess it stands that 210 million does not buy what it used to.

Because, as Wilson proved last night, anyone can be the hero.

    Nick,

I wasn’t joking. Is it worth looking up? Is it funnier than Upton standing there like a statue? Poor kid, he really lost the ball. He only saw it when it went into the stands.

Doesn’t seem to matter who is on the mound these days, so long as the offense can’t score more than 2 runs a game (and less last night).

Is 4th place any more disappointing than 3rd or 2nd or any other place that doesn’t get them into October? Its impossible for this team to be any more disappointing. In my mind, the lower they are in the pecking order at year end, the more impetus their is to improve the team in the offseason and to motivate those players that will return next year. They already have egg on their face, the only question left is how much, and frankly, the more the better as it relates to the future.

“Can someone please explain why Ponson is still in the rotation???”

He’s cheap. Hank and Hal like cheap. And Cashman likes him, because he’s the devil he knows, and it saves him having to try.

  13. Joe29

Can someone explain why Cashman is still GM??

  14. Charles

I’m not exactly sure how the process works, but if the Yanks finish fourth, won’t they get some consolation in the way of better draft picks in ‘09? I’m grasping at straws to spin this in a good way…

Nothing says “Who Cares?” quite like penciling in Sidney Ponson for a start.

  16. CanIGetAMooseCall

Sidney Ponson is a fat, puss-y toad!

  17. CT

I agree with everything Arliss posted

Charles, the draft pick order goes by record so the yanks will still not have a good draft spot simply because they still are over .500. However, they probably will pick before the rest of teh AL East and they will have a better spot than most years. However, all this could change with free agency.

sarcasm…and negative sarcasm at that. seems to be the norm on this blog the past few weeks. and b/c of that, i am taking a powder and saying goodbye to it. good luck and best wishes.

let all the free agents go except mussina.give him a one year/12 million as the 4th starter.
trade hughes, ajax for a good young center fielder, trade cano, kennedy and a prospect for a good young joba like pitcher, volquez would be a dream come true, trade a bunch of prospects for a good young first baseman, trade matsui/nady/damon and prospects for a corner outfieler or two, sign sabathia and another solid # 3 pitcher.

    dream rotation would bw sabathia,wang,volquez,joba,mussina.
