There is a bright spot in Scranton at least
Phil Hughes dominated Pawtucket today in Scranton’s 2-0 win. His line: 8 innings, 4 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 11 strikeouts. Hughes threw 75 of his 94 pitches for strikes.
Scranton scored two runs in the 10th to win it. Shelley Duncan belted a two-run walk-off homer. I hope Shelley didn’t hurt anybody. Good for those guys.
Scranton advanced to the International League championship series.

As for the Yankees, they are now in fourth place. The next three series are against first-place teams, the Angels, Rays and White Sox.
Here’s Joe Girardi’s postgame press conference:

As for me, I’m off to Orange County and the next leg of the road trip. The journey across America continues. Yahoo! Sports is reporting that Tom Brady is out for the season. Hopefully they’ll sign Chris Simms and press on. It’s a terrible blow, but I can’t quit watching football on Sept. 7.
Thanks for reading this weekend. I’ll try and keep the blog interesting through the end of the season.

put a fork in the Yanks, they finished.
Awesome! Perhaps the Yankees can end Scranton’s title drought.
the audio clip isnt working.
Go Phil – hopefully this is the AAA experience he should have had before!
I guess all the posters on this blog can go back to calling him Phil Franchise!
Good for Phil. I hope he works everything out and reclaims his promise. He’s still just a kid and I am confident he will be all that he expected to be.
“I guess all the posters on this blog can go back to calling him Phil Franchise!”
I won’t. I always thought that nick name was a bit presumptuous. He is getting just what he always needed more IP at AAA.
sorry, clip is fixed now.
Michael Scott,
Scranton announcers were saying there’s a first place jinx in the Intl league about not being able to get out of the first round. (sound familiar?)
Pete, don’t mean to “taunt” here, but what is your opinion on the Patriots’ situation if Brady is done for the season?
On topic, good for Hughes and Duncan. Congrats to the AAA boys and hopefully they can win it.
I can only imagine how Shelley was celebrating after that 2 run walk off HR. lol
I’m sure some people are hurting.
Good for Hughes and congrats to Scranton.
The video will be posted here if you want to see Hughes and judge for your own eyes. Some people weren’t impressed by his line.
http://web.minorleaguebaseball...../video.jsp
I’ve been watching the Mets and Phillies. Just started watching Indy and da Bears.
Indy is looking a little shaky.
I follow baseball more than football, but I’m wondering why Chris Simms is considered a better option for the Patriots than Culpepper?
“I can only imagine how Shelley was celebrating after that 2 run walk off HR. lol
I’m sure some people are hurting.”
I got the official SWB injury report for Shelley’s post game fit: 3 fractured fore-arms, 2 sprained elbows and lots of headaches(as a result of noogees.
SA,
He threw off his helmet halfway past 3rd and skipped home where he was mobbed.
not going to go crazy over minor league stats. hughes and kennedy are smart guys, they can easily outsmart AAA hitters. we’ve seen this story before.
if cashman is so confident in his abilities and feel that his numbers are not a product of out-smarting hitters but rather a result of improved fastball command and secondary pitches… then bring him up. no reason to trot out the likes of pavano and ponson if hughes is indeed making strides. season is over, there is no pressure on him.
By the way, does anyone remember the Bengals/Steelers playoff game a few years ago when Kimo Von Oelhoffen (sp?) hit Carson Palmer early in the game and it turned out Palmer had a severe injury? Brady’s play somewhat resembled Palmer’s to me.
Delgado could win comeback player AND MVP.
ray,
I don’t know much about Simms, but he did lead them to the playoffs before. New coach never gave him much of a chance. Before and after the ruptured spleen.
Great Job by Scranton…Nice to see both Trenton and Scranton advance forward, and defeat the RedSux two clubs in the process.
J E T S JetsJetsJets fans we have more hope tonight.
Speaking of Hughes, Santana is pitching another gem. Wonder how Hank/Hal will react to him lighting up October and carrying the Mets through the playoffs. He hasn’t lost a game since June.
Gruden did no justice to Simms.
Hope he lands on his feet somewheres.
damn, i love the NFL season. its wierd… i can’t get into it until after the yankees are eliminated from the playoffs in october but now i’ve been into it since august. this kick off weekend has been fun
The best part about Hughes start is he’s seemed to fix his main problem, which was lefties were hammering him. I’ve watched all his starts down there, and it looks like his change has really come along. The cutter is a work in progress, but looks like it may be an asset. The best thing is that hes been able to dial it up to 94, with real nice movement.
I dont understand the point they are trying to make by making him stay down there. Thats one of the main problems I have with this season. Why make him stay down there while the big league club is limping to the finish line?
Brian thanks for that, If anything IDK if we should call him up this season, it’s already over I’d rather he stay w/ Rafy for the rest of the season and tune him up for ST. Chris Garcia could get a looksy if and when the AA season is over and I want the young position players to get some PT too.
Karma is a bitch Pete.
Bears are doing better than I thought they would so far tonight.
My older brother went to high school with Chris Simms and shared his car on the way to prom.
It’s so weird to see Simms’ name mentioned like this, even if (as far as I know) they haven’t talked since then
Delgado could win comeback player AND MVP.
There is no way he gets MVP over what’s his name in Milwaukee and then you still have to consider Aramis Ramirez or Derek Lee.
Sad break for NE on Tom Brady (karma caught them for the Red Sox fans) Keep invading or forum next will be KG. No but seriously sad break.
our*
Good luck with that Pete… unless Arod becomes a starter, I don’t see how anything the Yanks do for the next three weeks makes anyone’s interest go up.
We need some more veterans on this team
btw pete, Johan “he’s only a 6-inning pitcher” Santana averages the 2nd most innings pitched per start by any pitcher in baseball this season. I’m not saying the Yanks should have traded for him, but your criticisms of Johan’s performance all year long were mostly unwarranted.
The Colts will be fine… Bellichick is a genius, he’ll find a way to win games. They won’t win 14 games, they’ll win 9-10. They will simplify the offense and rely on their D.
We need some more veterans on this team
LOL I know AZ that’s the last thing we need. This team needs to bring up thier own character players because the guys coming through that door are playing for thier #’s or trying to live up to a contract.
I specifically don’t want Teixeira just on that reason alone.
frootcakeitykoo,
Wow, you hit him right where it hurts. Ouch!
Bernie goes to Washington but what about the Bronx?
“Asked if Williams would visit Yankee Stadium during the final home stand, Fortunato seemed to indicate that he would. Williams has not returned in public to the Stadium since his last game there as a player in 2006.
“Those details are all being worked out as we speak,†Fortunato said. “As soon as there’s something official or final, we will work on that. All that stuff is being worked on right now. I think it’s going to be a good day.â€
http://bats.blogs.nytimes.com/.....ashington/
Mel thanks for that link Hughes looked good. However AAA is not MLB, his glasses looked pretty cool.
“There is no way he gets MVP over what’s his name in Milwaukee and then you still have to consider Aramis Ramirez or Derek Lee.”
Albert Pujols is having a superior year to every player in baseball, and by a wide margin. And yet the writers will probably snub him because the other 24 guys around him aren’t good enough for the Cards to make the postseason. It’s pretty absurd.
need young players with CHARACTER and HEART. players like pedroia and youkallis, not spoiled primadonnas like cano, tabata, etc
the red sox have identified winners from the minors down and developed them, whereas we have become the breeding ground for underachievers who don’t play up to their capabilities starting with the veterans and down all the way through the minors
“The Colts will be fine… Bellichick is a genius, he’ll find a way to win games. They won’t win 14 games, they’ll win 9-10. They will simplify the offense and rely on their D.”
Problem is everyone on their defense is in their 30′s, someone else will be injured and somethings gotta give.

“btw pete, Johan “he’s only a 6-inning pitcher†Santana averages the 2nd most innings pitched per start by any pitcher in baseball this season.”
I’m guessing Halladay of Toronto must be first with all those complete games he has pitched.
Pujols is putting up god-like numbers
.360 with 32 HRs with a .468 OBP (93 walks/47 Ks) and a 1.114 OPS.
Hitting .316 with RISP and .395 with the bases loaded.
He is so much better than A-Rod.

How about that guy CC and his 9 complete games.
The Bills looked good today, I think they’ll be the main competition for the Jets.
ESPN mentioned the Johan stat a few minutes ago. Maybe they just meant all NL pitchers. They listed Hamels above Johan. But you are right, halladay has to be the best. Cliff Lee is probably up there as well. So, my bad. ESPN’s graphic said “all pitchers.” Maybe CC hasn’t pitched enough NL innings to qualify for their stat.
And yeah, Pujols is insane this year.
“The Bills looked good today, I think they’ll be the main competition for the Jets.”
Marshawn Lynch and Trent Edwards are a pretty good young RB/QB combo.
Al,
Now you are making me wonder who number 1 would be?
CC has indeed been incredible, but didn’t he start the season out real slow with a number of losses?
Pete, this team is pathetic and no chemistry for playoff. You may make the blog more insteresting with Dodgers update which is more like a true tournament for playoff.
Al, will Pace end Cassell’s or Simms’ career next week?
“He is so much better than A-Rod.”
Well, too be fair to ARod, Pujols is better than every single hitter in the game.
Pete – sorry about Tom – an idea for the rest of the season – do speculation on Hughes who will be back and not etc.
“Al,
Now you are making me wonder who number 1 would be?
CC has indeed been incredible, but didn’t he start the season out real slow with a number of losses?”
Yes he started out slow but still has 217 IP.
“Al, will Pace end Cassell’s or Simms’ career next week?”
He had planned to end Brady’s career however Pollard thwarted those plans. I’m not sure but its certainly a possibility.
Pujols is the best hitter in this Era, think of him as Manny part 2 for this generation just flat out dangerous and is still young. That’s not fair to compare Alex w/ him it’s like Ted Williams to Ruth.
I want Mike Francessa and Stephen A. Smith to form a show together on WFAN.
I didn’t realize that Pujols was putting up those kind of numbers this year.
Imagine what he would do if you put him in the middle of the Yankee or the Sox line up!
sea net- They are awful alone. I can’t imagine them together. If it was possible to have negative ratings, that would do it.
Pujols is insane ever year. Just imagine the season he’d be having if he was totally healthy. He’s 23rd all time in batting average, 4th all time in slugging, and 13th all time in On base percentage. Anytime someone says “A-rod is the best player in baseball” I just have to laugh.
Well atleast the Mets won’t be swept this week 1/2 of NY is happy. Wagner might be done for the season. Here comes that lockdown BP.
Steve,
What are you talking about?!?
Al,
If CC has 217 innings pitched this year then it is very close because I just looked at the baseball reference site and they are listing Halladay as having 218 innings pitched so far this year.
I want Mike Francessa and Stephen A. Smith to form a show together on WFAN.
WHY ?
Maybe Marvin Harrison wishes he had his guns. Then they wouldn’t have the ball stolen from him.
Sea Net September 7th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
I want Mike Francessa and Stephen A. Smith to form a show together on WFAN
Hahahaha. Those wouldn’t last 20 minutes together
btw to those who think this team has no heart or no chemistry, do you realize that about 50 games have been started by Ponson/Rasner/Hughes/Kennedy/Igawa with completely awful results. And the bench guys (Ensberg, Duncan, Moeller, Stewart, Sexson, Gonzalez, Ransom, Gardner, Christian, Betemit) have combined for about 650 plate appearances with numbers comparable to Melky? And Melky has about 450 plate appearances with that same garbage production. That right there is a waste of close to 1100 plate appearances. Yikes. Then when you throw in Cano and Molina and Pudge, you get almost 40% of the team’s plate appearances have been given to players who have essentially been automatic outs. So you can complain all you want about Giambi or Alex being unclutch or Jeter’s GIDP issues or older players or lack of heart or no chemistry, but the bottom line is that guys like Abreu/Jeter/Giambi/ARod aren’t the problem. Giving 40% of the plate appearances to automatic outs and 1/3 of the starts to terrible pitchers is the problem. Giving that much playing time to crappy players will result in crappy outcomes, as it has so far this season.
That is just way too much playing time for super crappy players. And a big part of the reason for this is the utter failure of the Yankees farm and developmental system this year. The Yankees have not had any adequate replacements for their injured players, and that is mostly a condemnation of their farm system. When you don’t have any minor leaguers that can pitch better than Ponson or hit better than Jose Molina, you are in big trouble when guys get hurt.
“Al,
If CC has 217 innings pitched this year then it is very close because I just looked at the baseball reference site and they are listing Halladay as having 218 innings pitched so far this year.”
Actually 217.1 I just got that courtesy of ESPN.com.
Not a “sad break”. Injuries happen, they are part of the game. Good teams overcome them. We’ll see what the Patriots do, I doubt much.poor defense, mediocre running game, and great receivers with no one to throw to them. Not gonna lose a lot of sleep over Brady missing the season much like I doubt new england or boston fans lost much sleep over wang, joba, matsui, bruney, hughes, osi, or any othe yankee or giant getting hurt this year.
Does Stephen A. Smith know anything other than the NBA?
All you need to is add Kay to the mix and you can form a new talkshow, “Who has the biggest ego?”
reunite moss and caulpepper
or why don’t they sign todd collins?
This is from Jennings re: Hughes.
“One of the best pitching performances I’ve seen.”
who do you hate more presently — Red Sox or Cowboys?
Steve,
Todd Collins is the backup in Washington. They might need him as Campbell is struggling.
I feel for the Patriots and their fans. I know injuries are part of every season and every team, but this is their guy. The type of guy you build teams around. He comes off the IR for the first time in three years and gets hurt. Brady didn’t even play a quarter this year.
Instead of having an amazing talented veteran throwing the ball and making plays, the Pats now have an unproven young rookie doing his job.
The immortal NL legend Luis Ayala to win this game.
The Pats had their run. Last year’s Super Bowl loss was the equivalent of the Yanks losing in 2001. They’ll still be a good team, in fits and starts, but the dynasty is ovah, and it’s basically all downhill from here.
“who do you hate more presently — Red Sox or Cowboys?”
Was that a serious question?
Ayala won’t blow a 4 run lead, unfortuately.
True
Tyree’s catch = Mo throwing the ball into CF
Burress = Luis Gonzalez
Tuck, Strahan = Randy/Schilling
Ayala won’t blow a 4 run lead, unfortuately.
That’s a guaranteed lay up that he won’t, not even he can damage a 4 run lead.
Not even he can damage a 3 run lead. *
“True
Tyree’s catch = Mo throwing the ball into CF
Burress = Luis Gonzalez
Tuck, Strahan = Randy/Schilling”
These few lines brought back some of the worst memories in my sports life. That along with Reggie Miller 3 point showers, double nickel, 2004 ALCS and Doug Brien 2 missed FG. Wow the mental flood gates just opened.
I really don’t give a rat’s behind about Brady being out, but, it couldn’t have happened to a more deserving sports fan base.
GB7
Ouch…ouch…ouch. LOL
Pete, so who’s the favorite to win it all:
the Yanks or the Durham Bulls?
Ray, I should have qualified that with 995 of the sports fan base of New England. My error.
“I really don’t give a rat’s behind about Brady being out, but, it couldn’t have happened to a more deserving sports fan base.”
I disagree. The Sux nation deserves a devastating injury more than the Pats fan base. Just think about how the nation acts and how they are very apparently in bed with ESPN. That alone warrants Youkilis, Pedroia and Papelbon to all go down simultaneously.
*** or 99%….whichever is more***
Al From Burger King, I said nothing about hoping for injuries or being happy about them. I only meant that NE sports fan bases deserved no better than having their teams take a major hit….not by injuries, but by ineffectiveness. Wanting somebody hurt, is the ultimate in stupidity.
GB7…just kidding with you.
Al from BK…I may be a minority but I am actually sometimes embarassed by the bias slant of the ESPN reporting.
The thing that annoys me the most about current Sux fans is that they pretend that the Red Sux are the best team ever just based on the past 4 years. They act as if they have won the world series every year since baseballs inception. Here are the numbers unfortunately for all the NESPN bozos and Peter Gammons the truth cannot be stifled by a propaganda campaign of lies 7 WS championships and 12 AL pennants v.s. 26 WS championships and 39 AL pennants. There really isn’t a comparison success wise.
Yea I defintely don’t agree that the Pats fans are that bad. Sox nation is horrible. Unbearable. But then again, I knew a ton of Yankee “fans” who jumped on the bandwagon in the 90s and proudly called them “their” team.
Personally, I think the Sox had a plenty of losses this season, they just managed to play through it. Though I think if either Pedroia or Tek went down, their team would suffer greatly. Yea and I know that Tek can’t hit a barn, but a big part of the reason the Sox didn’t make October in 06 was his injury.
Ray, no problem. I understood you. Just wanted you/others to know that wanting or saying you want players or anybody hurt and posting it on a sports board is about as ignorant and immature and pathetic as one can get.
As a reward they should call up the entire Scranton team and let them all start the rest of the way for the Yanks.
At least then maybe we’d see some players who give a crap about more than cashing the next million dollar paycheck.
“At least then maybe we’d see some players who give a crap about more than cashing the next million dollar paycheck.”
Umm, how do you know that the players don’t give a crap? Do you personally talk to Ponson and Cano during their leisure time and have they privately told you that they don’t care? Do you really think these players don’t care about winning?
The team has had too many at-bats taken by players who can’t hit, and too many innings pitched by pitchers who suck. Just read the post at 10:38 Pm by froot.
Don’t confuse poor performance with lack of caring, especially when you have zero proof of the latter.
What’s worse: they dont’ care/try or that they just suck?
I would say that not caring would be worse. It’s hard to root for guys that don’t care.
I really hope that they have just given up because if they are trying yet not producing results, it’s gonna be a long next few years.
Ponson might “care” more than most of them, he’s playing for his next job.
Too bad he isn’t very good.
And on that note, I’m out for the night.
Do you all think Hughes will be with the Yankees next year? Or is he trade bait?
Well it’s not a big deal that guys like Rasner or Ponson or Molina or Melky suck, because they have generally sucked in the past. It’s not surprising. And with the exception of Melky, those other guys weren’t part of any major future plans as far as the Yankee roster is concerned, so their crap performance is not all that depressing.
But it is depressing to see guys like Hughes and Cano and Kennedy suck, because we need those guys to be effective players in the future for many years.
Do you all think Hughes will be with the Yankees next year? Or is he trade bait?
It depends. That’s why I’d rather they call up Christian Garcia this year, give him a looksy and see if they can build his stock in a deal, look at Texas they made a tough decision in dealing Volquez/Cordero for Josh Hamilton and it paid off. I’d target a Carlos Gonzalez, a Cameron Maybin or Ryan Sweeney w/ the kids, or a Dexter Fowler.
The majority players of Yankees are old and lack of sustained fighting strength. Nearly 70 percent of main players are getting older. The manager of Yankees have blind faith in statistics and lack of daring combined with superior judgement. The GM of Yankees lack of eyesight and judgement to select real potential players for the team, and made a lot of foolish contracts and trade. The hitting coach couldn’t teach to hitters how to play better. The season is done undoubtedly. If Yankees can’t do a “REAL BIG REBUILD AND CHANGE” with daring and resolution, the next season will be done.
Cashman(can consider let him go)
Giradi(should change his style and improve management’s ability and skill)
Kvein Long(can consider let him go)
Damon(old but serious and sad to say he is decline)
Jeter(old but you sould respect for his efforts)
Abreu(old but still has a good season)
A-Rod(WPA is very low couldn’t match with his salary)
Gimabi(old but serious)(too expensive and the team need youngster)
Nady(he is ok)
Matisui(see Damon)
Cano(hard to say)(let him stay or go can be accept)
Posoda(old and obvious decline)
Molina(good catcher but has worst batting)
If the GM or Manager still say their goal is to going into the postseason this season right now. It must cheat themselves and couldn’t face the truth. If Yankees has the same lineup as this year and couldn’t do BIG CHANGE,and say they can go into postseason next season, and it may be cheat themselves too.
i think hell be with the yankees…im not close to giving up on him…a lot of players his age havent even tasted the majors and he has had some success but also failure
I think outside of Joba Hughes is still the most untouchable yankee there is. I’m not sure that the Yanks would give him up for a outfielder, b/c the reports on Austin Jackson is he is the real deal, and could be ready by the middle of next season.
I guess Brian Cashman needs new glasses?
I think Hughes would come back to bite if we let him go.
Not to mention the more obvious signs. Sending Him to the AFL, and the fact Joba is starting the season in the Pen. Hughes will contribute in some capacity next season, no doubt about it.
The decision has to come between these 3 Kennedy, Garcia or Hughes..1 of them can not be in this system, one may lose value another might not pan out, while the other is serviceable, the next call up after the AA season is done has to be Christian Garcia they need to see up close what he has.
I think Kennedy will be the odd man out for sure. Hughes has run into some bad luck with these injuries, but still seems to have the right attitude to do well. Kennedy was always fringy and was a clear example of Yankee hype. Hughes earned the respect of scouts everywhere, Kennedy did not.
Brian w/ all reality I think 2 out of those 3 won’t be here. For the Yankees to go after CC this offseason and Wang returns..you also got Wilkins De La Rosa who most likely starts out AA next year, Zach McCallister who has been compared to the Doc and you also have to factor Andrew Brackman and Humberto Sanchez. They have tough choices to make this offseason, if we want to get a young athletic position OF 2 out these 3 (Hughes, Garcia, Kennedy) are probably gone.
I think Hughes was (is?) seen as a mainstay pitcher, a guy that can be a solid top of the rotation (or near the top) starter for many years. I don’t think he is going anywhere.
I think Kennedy was supposed to just be a guy that could fill in 200 innings of about league average performance at an inexpensive salary for a few years. That kind of player is very useful since it lets you stay away from signing overpriced and declining free agent pitchers and getting bogged down by crazy long-term contracts. But alas, Kennedy is a long way away from even reaching this type of a role with the team. So I could definitely see him traded. But his value is crazy low right now, so it might not be the best time to trade him.
yeah your probably right, I just dont expect them to trade Hughes.
Not to mention that he has better stuff than IPK.
IPK won’t see the day of light as long as Girardi is the manager.
I dont think that trading a top pitching prospect for any type of position player is what the Yankees want to do. Would the sox trade Buchholtz for any other prospect? I doubt it, but thats where the second tier pitching prospects come in. Kennedy = Masterson, that type of thing. Guys like Buchholtz, Hughes, Lester and Joba are rare finds.
IPK won’t see the day of light as long as Girardi is the manager.
You mean Ian “It’s all good a couple of doubles an 4 runs ain’t that bad and I’ll over it” Kennedy
“Not to mention that he has better stuff than IPK.”
somebody acually asked this type of question to Jim Callis in the ESPN chats.
He said that Kennedy was end of rotation at best, while Hughes, joba, Lincecom, that tier, were all guaranteed front line starters.
You mean Ian “It’s all good a couple of doubles and 4 runs ain’t that bad and I’m over it already†Kennedy
Losing Brady is a devastating blow to two of my fantasy teams where I took Brady with my first pick in one and Moss with either my first or second in the other. =(
No baseball in October, my fantasy hopes blown up in the very first quarter, and Tommy Bowden being Tommy Bowden yet again? What a horrible sports year. Only bright side was seeing former Tiger Chansi Stuckey catch a Favre TD pass today for the Jets.
Big things for the Jets this year, count on it.
lol.
People are funny. 2 weeks ago, people were screaming that Phil was a worthless bum.
Nice to see Phil do well, even if it’s in the minors. The playoffs seem to bring out the best in him.
Yankees pay too high salary on players and couldn’t gain commensurate repay.

Well, Al, we need to keep him away from Calvin Pace.
“Nearly 70 percent of main players are getting older”
I swear, this has become the funniest blog on the internets. I only wish I found it sooner.
im glad all of the yankees amazing talent in the minors isnt going to coach. If cash was the GM of our minor league clubs I would be ecstatic. Unfortunately, he has somehow found a way to almost double the next highest payed team in baseball while at the same time turning us into a fourth place team. And for some reason hank and hal waant to resign him. How bad does a GM have to do before he isnt offered a contract any more? Would last place do it? And some ppl r concerned that cash wont accept an offer he should NEVER get in the first place. I know they like the guy but this clearly isnt working. And I love how ppl say this is a rebuilding yr – a 200 million dollar rebuilding yr – What exactly is getting rebuilt? Jeter, arod, matsui, damon, posada and mo are all another yr older. We have a bunch of young pitchers who have no at all increased their work load and a bunch of old ones who need new contracts. What exactly have we accomplished with this rebuilding yr? What have we or what will we rebuild? I can tell you one thing, we have no accomplished a thing since cash has taken over operations. In fact, we have gotten progressively worse every single season. He has to go
Which players are getting younger?
I want Moose signed to a 10-year deal; give him the chance to get to 400 wins in pinstripes.
“I want Moose signed to a 10-year deal; give him the chance to get to 400 wins in pinstripes.”
I agree 100%. We will have the first pitcher in history that is not only a ML ball player but also an AARP member.
Yeah, Mussina sucks. The Yanks would be under .500 without him. Genius.
Who cares anyhow? I give up on 2008. The Yankees have already, so why shouldn’t I?
I hope they are ready to pony up some dough in the offseason, because really the only thing that’s going to have an immediate impact on this team is free agents. Hopefully they can throw enough cash at Sabathia to get him to head to the East Coast. And while they’re at it, they can sign his former rotation mate, Ben Sheets. Yeah, I said it. Either him or A.J. Burnett. We can’t rely on the young guys (other than Joba) to contribute like we did this year. If they do, then we have an embarrassment of riches. This year, it was just an embarrassment.
While we’re at it, either sign Tex or trade some of the depth in the farm system for a first baseman. I think we have internal answers to the outfield situation.
The roster needs an overhaul in the off-season. Bid Giambi, Pettitte, Abreu, I-Rod, & Betemit goodbye. Sign Moose for a one year deal, with second year team option. Matsui or Damon has to move to first, and explore trades. Look into signing Texiera, but odds are he will want to stay with LA, and it will probably take 7yrs/120 to get him. They need to look at all avenues for pitching. Look at CC, but be careful about signing him to a big contract. He’s probably looking at a contract like Santana. I think the Yanks need to look at short term contracts. They are already tied into Arod for 9 more years, and most of the long term contracts they have signed have not panned out. The Yankees have to get an everyday CF, and find a young catcher who can take over for Posada.
Like a broken record by Stump Girardi, “We’ve gotta keep fightin’” That’s COMICAL. There is and was NO fight in this team. They are GUTLESS.
I wonder if too much of working out on Giselle and not enough of working out on the field caused little Tomboy’s problem. Actually I think he started to show cracks last season. That’s what happens when you pick pretty poison.
Lots of things go into the demise of a season. There were many times when Joe Green Tea did things that fans questioned, and times when Joe Green Tea came back and said he might have done things differently. The one that screams out of course is Joba and the bugs.
I think that Girardi made his share of mistakes this season, probably more than a seasoned manager would have made; and with the underproducing team, I think those mistakes really hurt us. I can only hope that he will figure out a way next year to be more proactive in switching what needs to be switched. Mainly I hope that he will be quick to juggle the lineup with players who aren’t getting it done, switching 4 and 5 when he needs to, 5 down to 7, etc.
Other than that, other than Bobby Abreu I can’t think of any player who had an overall productive season. So when people are ready to stomp on the Arods of the world, a little shoe time has to also be reserved for Derek Jeter. Yes he came back like the Phoenix when it appeared that the Yankees were on their last leg, but his GIDP were legend. If you have the energy and desire, check out how many games were potentially lost when he killed a rally.
Sad year indeed.
Pitching? If Kennedy and Hughes had won half of their games, as dismal as the season was, we’d still be in the running. And of course CM going down was devastating. So in the end it always comes down to pitching.
Oh well.
Cashman grossly miscalculated with Hughes and Kennedy. Neither were ready. Them going down, plus the freak acident of Wang getting hurt, put more pressure on Andy & Moose. Moose has risen to the occasion, while Andy has melted down (With the exception of his last start). Hughes and Kennedy going down early, also meant a rush move to get Chamberlain into the rotation asap. They have to stop yo-yoing Joba, or we’re going to see more injuries lkie the one he had this year. Next year they should either keep him in the pen or start him. The lineup is a mystery. Arod was injured early, and Jeter and Cano had off years. Giambi, Abreu, and Damon have produced, but losing Posada also hurt. The injury that hurt the most was losing Matsui. He’s a contact hitter, that is clutch. Losing him in the middle of the order, put too much pressure on Arod (God forbid), and Giambi wasn’t enough protection in the lineup hitting after him. Girardi’s mistake was keeping Giambi in the five hole for this long, who’s walks are down and strikeouts are up.
just a fun tidbit seeing chris simms name, i actually went to preschool with his sister (phil simms daughter).. I once went to a playdate at her house, and got my fingers stuck in the door of their RV while we were playing outside. ouch!
