Bernie Williams – remember him? – was at the White House yesterday serving as a coach in the last tee-ball game that President Bush hosted on the South Lawn. Children of military families participated in the event.

Bernie got a tour of the White House and a brief meeting with the President, who is a big baseball fan.

Bernie’s marketing agent, Steve Fortunato, indicated that plans are in the works for Bernie to make an appearance at the Stadium before it closes. That’s good to hear.

Billy Wagner needs elbow surgery and is likely to miss all of 2009. Francisco Rodriguez just made a whole lot of scratch.

Good to hear indeed. I know this is blasphemous, but I think Bernie was kind of childish about the whole thing. But it must’ve hurt him like a divorce hurts.

Wagner diagnosed with multiple torn ligaments in his pitching elbow. Likely to miss a year to 14 months effectively ending his 09 chances as well.

Bern Baby Burn! we love ya!!!!

Too bad wagner got injured now the mets have a chance of winning it all as he can’t blow the big ones.

  5. Roland September 8th, 2008 at 2:51 pm

I dont think Bernie was childish. Cashman really demeaned him by offering him a minor league deal after all he did for the organization. Bernie will always be a class act.

K-Rod to the Mets next year. BOOK IT

If the return of Bernie Williams amounts to him pulling that stupid lever that has been graced with the presence of every employee of METLife, I’m going to find anyone I can from the Yankee’s front office and swiftly smack them in the face. Same for Bernie and his agent for agreeing to it.

I’m sure they’ll do a much better job than that, but I was also sure there would be more going on this year to celebrate the final season than there has been. Then again, I also expected the team to play to win….

I haven’t had a chance to follow along today, so sorry if this has been mentioned already, but I wanted to point out that Tyler Kepner, in his New York Times account of yesterday’s game, fails to mention that Jeter tied Babe Ruth on the Yankee hit lost.

    I deplore that!

Guess K-Rod is being measured for Mets orange and blue now?

Re Bernie, I think the fault lies between both parties. Its not always easy to face up to it being time to hang up the glove, though. I don’t know how well the Yankees communicated to him where they felt he was, in terms of ability, but they did at least give him a chance to go to ST and show it. He decided not to go.

I think things will work out, the closing of the stadium might give the perfect opportunity to grease the wheels toward making it so.

Has anyone heard/read anything about the festivities planned for the last night, 9/21?

Trisha s…I mean Nick stop Trisha is going to be pissed, Trisha it was Micheal Kay who told them not to acknowledge it, just thought you’d like to know.

If Billy Crystal can play in Spring Training, they should sign Bernie to a two week contract and have him start in Center on the 21st. Can you imagine the bleacher creatures?

  12. Al from BK(Calvin Pace doesn't just end drives, he ends careers.) September 8th, 2008 at 3:00 pm

Calvin Pace gets at least 2 sacks next week. Book it.

Roland, like it or not, Bernie was pretty much finished as a player. He had the chance to try out for a position. Yes, it stinks getting older and declining, but it happens. Some people just aren’t ready to accept when it is time.

That doesn’t make Cashman bad. He gave a tough message to Bernie, and Bernie didn’t like it. Unless you think Bernie would have been the answer in the outfield these past two years.

  14. trisha - I support Sidney Ponson and also believe Arod will start to hit. September 8th, 2008 at 3:02 pm

Brandon no problem, it must be very boring for Nick to do nothing but clip poodles all day. So his Don Rickels act does him well. Either that or the sense of entitlement that seems to be part of his birthright!

Brandon, what do you mean about Michael Kay?

  15. mel September 8th, 2008 at 3:03 pm

    Al,

What’s so great about 2 sack lunches?

  16. Mac September 8th, 2008 at 3:04 pm

    Bern baby bern! =)

  17. Wilkes-Barre Pinstripes in Philly September 8th, 2008 at 3:06 pm

I always find myself rooting against K-Rod. That victory dance he does after he converts a save is absurd…I think that whatever team signs him next year is going to end up disappointed when his pitching arm falls off.

  18. TKinDC September 8th, 2008 at 3:06 pm

What makes this White House appearance by Bernie Baseball especially nice of El Presidente is the fact that Bernie absolutely raked against the Rangers when ‘W’ owned them.

IIRC Bernie went boom again and again in Arlington TX :)

Brandon, what do you mean about Michael Kay?

    Forget I mentioned it.

  20. trisha - I support Sidney Ponson and also believe Arod will start to hit. September 8th, 2008 at 3:10 pm

Brandon – I will. Trust me.

  21. Al from BK(Calvin Pace doesn't just end drives, he ends careers.) September 8th, 2008 at 3:10 pm

    “Al,

What’s so great about 2 sack lunches?”

    lol. An extra swiss miss.

“I always find myself rooting against K-Rod. That victory dance he does after he converts a save is absurd…I think that whatever team signs him next year is going to end up disappointed when his pitching arm falls off.”

I think the Mets should sign K-rod that way they can have a right handed version of Wagner(dont worry his arm will be fine, its not like he throws too hard with an odd delivery).

  22. Roland September 8th, 2008 at 3:18 pm

Well I can guarantee you that we wouldn’t be stinking it up like we are now with Bernie on the team. People get old.. yea obviously, but it’s not like Bernie was going to be the starting CF he was going to be a 4th/5th OFer. Who has been so great as our backup outfielder that we had to shaft one of the legends of a dynasty???? Bernie may not have had all the super duper stats that Abreu and Gaymon have but he was a TEAM PLAYER who did whatever it took to WIN BALLGAMES. Lord knows we have enough all-stars on our roster, everyone in our lineup has been to an all star game, and oh yeah in case you forgot.. WE ARE IN 4TH PLACE.

call me crazy but I’d rather have role players and wins.. then all stars and stats.

  23. For $13 I'll be a Macadamia Nut September 8th, 2008 at 3:25 pm

Funny, the Yankees weren’t exactly overly represented at the All-Star game.

Roland, you really lose credibility when you throw in those stupid nicknames.

The trouble this year has a lot to do with having older players on the team, yet you want to add another one who was in more decline? Yeah, that would have solved all the woes of the Yankees and cured global warming as well. Stupid Yankees and Cashman for not seeing it.

  24. Nick in SF September 8th, 2008 at 3:26 pm

Heh, sorry Trisha, just having too much fun with the goofy ‘deplorable’ thing. I hope you give Tyler Kepner heck.

Just curious, can you explain the meaning of the poodle-clipping reference? My line of work has nothing to do with poodles, dogs, or any type of animal grooming. So I just wondered whether there was any actual point to that. Thanks in advance for your reply.

  25. trisha - I support Sidney Ponson and also believe Arod will start to hit. September 8th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

Well Nick, goofy is as goofy does so do it up.

  26. Iris(read my blog @ adiehardyankeesfan.blogspot.com) September 8th, 2008 at 3:30 pm

    Aww I miss Bernie =[ . ... I call him the doubles man ;]

  27. Nick in SF September 8th, 2008 at 3:33 pm

Sorry, I meant thanks in advance for the reply *to my question*. So, again, is there an explanation and can you provide it?

  28. trisha - I support Sidney Ponson and also believe Arod will start to hit. September 8th, 2008 at 3:44 pm

    I feel bad for Wagner.

  29. Roland September 8th, 2008 at 3:53 pm

“everyone in our lineup HAS been to an all star game” read closer son HAS BEEN not THIS YEAR.. YOU lose all credibility because you have the reading comprehension of a 4th grader. Gaymon, Gay-rod there all the same overpaid STARS who are are thrown together and called a team.. This is not MVP Baseball dude, there is more to making a team than getting all the stars you can. So settle down and suck my macadamian nuts son.

  30. Axel September 8th, 2008 at 3:56 pm

Looks like Bernie needs to lay off the pinchos and fried plantains.

  31. Sean L September 8th, 2008 at 3:57 pm

At least Bernie played with heart which is something that cant be said for most of our starting lineup.

  32. wood is good September 8th, 2008 at 4:05 pm

    Gaymon . . . Gay-rod . . .

The Homophobic Stylings of Roland, ladies and gentlemen!

    Bernie for President in 08!

  34. They shoot horses don't they? September 8th, 2008 at 5:11 pm

    Re: The Bernie/Cashman affair.

My only regret is that Cashman didn’t show some tough love to Posada in offering less years on his new contract.

Where would the team be in that scenario?

They’d be moving towards getting younger and more athletic without another albatross of a contract for a player that may not ever play another credible game behind the plate.

    Grow up…seriously…

  36. Christine September 8th, 2008 at 6:25 pm

Thank you so much, Pete, for the photo and info on Bernie!

I miss him so much! What a great guy! Glad to hear the Yankees are working on bringing him back before they tear down the Stadium.

  37. mm September 8th, 2008 at 8:01 pm

I love bernie as a player, but wish he didn’t visit the war criminal in the White House.

  38. Will September 8th, 2008 at 9:13 pm

MM-Just please shut up-are you going to have a life after Jan 2009…?!?

  39. Noonan September 8th, 2008 at 11:29 pm

Bernie looks like he’s packed on some pounds. Can’t say I blame him though.

  40. Dan Alterman September 9th, 2008 at 10:04 am

I would rather the Yankees honor Bernie Williams than anything else. it is perplexing why he hasnt shown up yet.
More importantly can we please get rid of Kate Smith’s God Bless America and play Ray Charles’ version. Dipper NYC
