  1. Al from BK(Calvin Pace doesn't just end drives, he ends careers.)

This is the series that puts us 10 games out, effectively putting a stamp on this mailed in season.

I wish football had a schedule with more days being filled during the week. I don’t know what to do for my daily sports fix for the next couple of months until the NBA starts. There is nothing but putrid baseball to watch right now, and I cannot even describe how embarrassing this series is going to be. Because even if they do come out winning a little bit, people are going to criticize them for turning it on when it doesn’t count (which, admittedly, doesn’t seem likely, anyway.) I am just at a loss for words in attempting to describe this empty feeling of having absolutely nothing to do with myself, aside from watching a miserable team allowing its talent to waste away.
Okay, I’m really tired, so excuse me if this sounds too emotional. Because I really don’t care how the Yankees do anymore.

  3. I also believe in the Tooth Fairy...

If we can just sweep the next 3 teams we play, we will be RIGHT back in it ( sadly, this is what it has come down to ) :-(

Well we’re down to rooting for individual things:

Aceves to have a quality start against one of the best teams (I’d say THE best) in baseball… and a couple more after that.

Pettite continuing his streak of having a winning record in every season of his career, which is now in jeopardy.

Pettite reaching 2,000 K (he needs ten)

Mussina somehow getting three more wins.

    ARod reaching 35, 100

Jeter breaking the Stadium hits record

Melky having a few productive games to give him a bit of a boost heading into the off season

Oh well… I still remember the late sixties/early seventies so I can cope with this.

You’re right. The Yankees are, quite literally, in a no-win situation. If they win even all 19 games, they will probably still fall short, and they most certainly will be accused of only being able to win because it no longer “counted;” and if they lose, they will be accused of “mailing it in,” just showing up and going through the motions. It’s going to be very difficult to get through.

It might be wise to avoid all written media, talk radio, and fans of other teams during this period. :)

The pitching Matchups for this series ain’t bad at all. I believe we can win this series, if not sweep. Here’s why: Carl Pavano has been throwing the ball well as of late, & the Halos haven’t faced him in like forever so I think he has the advantage. Alfredo Aceves has had two back to back successful starts as a long man & I think he can continue pitching great as a starter. Expect 5-6 inning out of him. Last but not least this one is all on Pettitte. If he feels good out there & is able to keep his composure & hold runners on, I think we have a shot. Just one thing, we better score early. Ervin is going to be tough, garland we can scratch some runs across & Weaver we murder! Go Yankees!!

  7. David

I think the Yankees management gave up on this season over a month ago, so why shouldn’t the fans. They did a horrible job on waiver trades, allowing teams in front of them to improve while doing nothing for themselves (Byrd, Guardado, even Washburn were claimed by teams with better records, thus could have gone to the Yankees instead).

Aceves, Hughes, Zambrano, even Igawa and Wright have all been throwing well in the minors, yet the Yankees called up Britton and Robertson? They did not get any real rotation help all season, while the youngsters faltered, Pettitte struggled and the bullpen wore down.

Shelley Duncan and Juan Miranda are slugging 1B prospects in the system, yet the Yankees have not brought them up for a look, even though Giambi’s contract is about to expire and we need to know what we have.

The players do not seem to care, but I think that trickles down. They see that management does not care, and is not giving them the tools they need to win.

  8. Fan mail from some flounder

Whaaa! Whaaa! They Yankees are going to kiss the playoffs ! Whaaa! Whaaa! I feel so bad… sob, sob… My fragile ego… devastated… all is lost… I, I can’t go on this way… How could they do this to me?!? WHAAAHAAH !!

Sheesh! Spoiled brats. Get over it already!

  9. saucY - automate the strike zones!

so if Aceves get another win or two, and maintains a respectable ERA, he gets a rotations spot in 2009, right? ;)

  10. bigjf

saucY, I think that 5th spot at least would be up for grabs next season, depending on whom the Yanks bring in or bring back. Assuming they pick up a top flight FA pitcher (Sheets, Sabathia, etc.), get Wang back healthy, bring back either Moose or Pettitte (maybe even both), and keep a spot warm for Joba, there’s going to be open competition again for injury replacement and for someone to hold down Joba’s spot while he “transitions” all over again.

I can’t stay up late tomorrow with a quiz early the next morning, but I’m looking forward to seeing some of Aceves’ start.

  11. A.B.K

the Angels might clinch the AL West in the 3 game series against the Yankees as their magic number is at 3.
By the way no team in mlb history made the playoffs after being out 8.5 games this late in a season (by date and games).

  12. tim boat

This has Angels sweep written all over it. I bet A-Rod hits a bomb or two in garbage time.

pettitte and mussina should be let go.offer arbitration and collect the picks.

    giambi,pavano,abraeu,marte gone.

with hgh and steroids gone this is a young mans game.

the yankees need to try to sign sabathia and sheets to go with wang, joba, hughes.acevez can stay in the pen unless he proves to be a good starter.

this team looks very old, slow and confused all year.girardi thought because of the talent and payroll that it was automatic playoffs,i hope he is humbled.

melancon will be in the bullpen mix at some point in 2009 if he keeps pitching lights out.

do they get a good young center fielder or wait for ajax,do we trade hughes, kennedy, cano?

we need a center fielder, first baseman,an ace and another solid starter.

    do we sign tex?

i would try to sign sabathia and sheets, trade cano and some prospects for the best young pitcher we can get even if we have to do a cano, kennedy, ajax deal.trade hughes and prospect(s) for a good young center fielder, either sign texiera or trade a few prospects for a first baseman like fielder,etc…..

one more year of damon and matsui and bye bye to both unless we can get anything in return,if we could trade them.

we can’t wait for all these prospects except for the good ones.

they should of never made the nady and marte trade.they lost several prospects that could of helped bring in the right players instead of 2 soon to be free agents wanting big bucks.

Pettitte and Mussina aren’t going to sign anywhere else – hence no picks. Pettitte basically has said so many times this past offseason, and Mussina is such a creature of habit and comfort there’s no way he’s pitching anywhere but NY next season – it’s NY or retire for him, he’d almost certainly accept arbitration if offered, especially since he seems to want to pitch for only one year. It’s never a certainty players will reject arbitration.

I love all this nitwits who think the Yankees will offer arbitration to guys like Abreu, Giambi, Mussina, Pettitte, I-Rod etc and those players will all decline, sign else where and the Yankees get a haul of picks. FAT CHANCE! Almost all of those players would prolly accept arbitration.

Marte is worth another shot since hard throwing lefties with his track record don’t grown on trees and Nady is someone they should keep around for awhile because of his right bat and ability to also play first (from his Mets and Padres days). It’d be idiotic to trade Cano now while his value is in the toilet.

And no way do they hold out and wait for Jackson since 90% of this team’s prospects never pan out, particularly the highly touted ones.
