Cashman: I have an advisory group already

Peter Abraham
September
12

Here’s what Brian Cashman had to say about Hank Steinbrenner’s plan to form an advisory group:

“At the end of the day, I definitely without a doubt believe that as owners, they need to set up a structure they’re comfortable with. Simple as that,” he said. “I’m certainly not going to make this about me. I do have an advisory board: It’s my manager; it’s my coaching staff; it’s our pro scouting director; it’s our farm director; it’s our amateur scouting director.”

Interesting. Cashman would not say whether he wanted to return as general manager. I believed earlier this season that he and the Steinbrenners would agree on something in October. Now I’m not so sure. It’s gone from 80-20 to 60-40 in my mind.

The only other bit of news to come out the Stadium tonight is that Andy Pettitte has been lined up to start the final game on Sept. 21.

It’s supposed to rain all weekend. For all we know, the 22nd could be the last day.

  2. Save us Y2J

I’d like to see this Juan Miranda kid.
Phil Hughes will be a great pitcher in time.
If Cashman goes, bring back Watson.
Start Joba in the rotation to be sure he gets his innings.
    CC!!!

  3. #9

    Triple header on Sunday?

  4. Skippy

As soon as I see “Hank” in a sentence, my mind wanders to things like grocery lists and dental appointments.

  5. Brandon (We have a soft captain and a softer sidekick..true story)..."we paid today, we lose today, das it".

Bob Watson is MLB’s enforcer of suspensions. No he won’t be back.

  6. housecleaner

If I read Hank’s release correctly, the advisory board would consist of indepedent “outside” parties, not in-house underlings as Cashman suggests. “Advisors” typically are beholden to no one, thus “advisors” not “underlings” who proverbially live and breathe at the whim and caprice of the guy higher up in the food chain (to whom they report.”advise”). Cashman misses the point, as usual.

  7. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Hmm…I would think either Andy or Moose deserves the start and my mind keeps flipping between the two.

  8. Nick in SF

No word yet on whether Theo and Billy Beane have agreed to serve on the advisory board.

  9. For $13 I'll be a Macadamia Nut

“I do have an advisory board: It’s my manager; it’s my coaching staff; it’s our pro scouting director; it’s our farm director; it’s our amateur scouting director.”

Judging from this season, what a fine job they have done.

  10. Nick in SF

How about a compromise: we get the advisory board to replace Bobby Meacham as 3rd base coach?

  11. Dahan Catering

Come on Pete. Enlighten us on the most eye-popping phenomenon of the season. You have yet to said a word on this.
What makes Cliff Lee so good? Is it his 98 mph fastball or his devastating curve, or is it something else?

  12. AngelsFan

Amazing that all $209 million and an advisory board gets us is fourth place and a kick in the nuts season.

Brilliant, Cashman. Pack your bags, idiot.

  13. ariel

Cashman is off base as usual. Hank wants a fresh advisory (presumably consisting of outsiders) to evaluate the organization from top to bottom, tell him what’s right (very little), what’s wrong (quite a bit), what steps can and should be taken (an implosion would be the short answer) what changes are necessary (HaHa), who should stay (are you kidding) and who should go (back up the 18 wheeler), among other things.

  14. terpbomber

WFAN played Cashman’s statement. He did have a slight tone of condescension in his response. It’s almost as if he was saying that if he cannot have the kind of control he needs to run the team the way he sees fit, he will be seeking employment elsewhere in the offseason. A lot of teams are more than happy to get his services.

That said, it seems like he has been getting too much bad advice. Wayyyyy too much!

  15. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and hopefully the offense won't be so offensive.

We should be a part of this “advisory group”.

    :P

  16. ariel

Bring Bowa back ASAP. According to Michael Kay, he misses New York, and would like to return. Apparently, Cash told him “we’re going in a different direction”. Was he right!!!

  17. ariel

Watch for the Stick to come back on an interim basis.

  18. bob

I hate all this Friday night high school football crap. Makes the local newscasts at least 10 minutes longer. Simply. Garbage. Simply.

  19. Nick in SF

I don’t know, S.A., some LuHud advisors might recommend a rotatio of:

    Ponson
    Rasner
    Kennedy
    Igawa
    Pavano

  20. DurhamYankee

I live in Durham and took my 4.5 month old son to the game tonight. I had an awesome interaction with Hughes, I was telling him that he had another inning in him, meanwhile Jonathan Albadejo was already on the mound, and Hughes was pointing at him. Hughes and I started laughing when we realized that I had no idea they had switched him. Also, Miranda is a great player, i hope we see him soon!

Durham Athletic Ballpark is an awesome time if anyone can make it down. Ya’ll can stay at my place when ya’ll visit

  21. Morris WhiteShoes

C’mon, Girardi, even Yogi sez it’s over!!!

  22. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and hopefully the offense won't be so offensive.

I don’t know, S.A., some LuHud advisors might recommend a rotation of:

    Ponson
    Rasner
    Kennedy
    Igawa
    Pavano

    LOL

Wait, so Ponson is our #1? Not Cy Igawa?
    Oh the Pain

  23. Nick in SF

Well, Ponson might not end up #1 in the rotation, but he’ll always be #1 in the heart(s) of his supporter(s).

  24. PUDGE, THE 08 CURSE

    Cashman
you cant pack your bags soon enough

    hit the road!!

  25. ariel

It’s nice to hear the good news from Durham. particularly about Hughes. He was rushed along too quickly with far too much fanfare. Hopefully he will not be injury-prone as his career progresses. Did Cashman push the envelope with Hughes, Kennedy etc given the urgency of the situation and his job/legacy? He seems to take an “I could care less” attitude about being retained, but that’s just for show. He probably would be able to get a job, but that’s not such an accomplishment given the qualifications and performance of other GMs, e.g., Ricciardi.

  26. Morris WhiteShoes

Maybe the Stick will bring Buck back. How’s that Arod!!!

  27. Morris WhiteShoes

The Advisory Board will recommend the following:

    Interim GM … The Stick, who will dismiss Pena and Meacham,and bring in;

Bowa and Buck to kick it into gear!!!!

  28. yankeefan91

    DurhamYankee

thats very thoughtful of you how was the fastball and his breaking ball any particcular pitch u was impressed by

  29. ariel

The Stick may still be in Japan scouting potential prospects. Obviously he is there to avoid a repeat of the Kei Igawa fiasco and the flushing $$$$ down the drain due to scouting incompetence…by one or more of Cashman’s erstwhile “advisors”.

  30. Mark (Brett is back)

I’ll have more tomorrow, but for now I’ll leave you with Phil Hughes answer when a TV crew asked him what the party is going to be like.

“It’s going to be pretty massive,” Hughes said. “I don’t know where it’s going to lead or where it’s going to go but I’m sure it will get out of control.”

Those quotes are from Chad Jennings.

I would guess Durham will be feeling the wrath of Shelley tonight. Hide the women and children.

  31. Betsy

I’m glad Brian’s speaking out…perhaps he’s just saying this to kind of hush Hank up, like he did earlier this year (I forgot the situation, but Hank had made an idiotic comment and Cashman responded in the press, something which is unlike him). I think perhaps Brian has had enough of Hank, but he also likes and respects Hal. I don’t think Hal is too thrilled with Hank, so perhaps after the season is over, they can hash this out. If Cash walks because of Hank, I wonder which reputable GM would want this job. Cash is very well respected and it’s known that he and his family love NY; if he leaves, then it’s because Hank makes even working for the most prestigious team in sports impossible to do. Who would want to work under these conditions?

  32. Betsy

Durham Yankee, how great for you! Phil is very appreciative of his fans, so it doesn’t surprise me that he would take the time to laugh it up with you……at your expense, to boot!

  33. Nick in SF

David Price called up to Tampa, says ESPN BT, will be in NY tomorrow.

  34. Betsy

Finally, some good news. I didn’t think I’d be so excited about a AAA championship, but I am. I’m happy for the kids, who get to enjoy that winning feeling; they won as team – there’s nothing better than that. I’m also happy for Phil that his year is ending on a very positive note as it appeared for awhile that 2008 was going to be a nightmare for him.

  35. Betsy

I don’t get the criticism of Cash not wanting a so-called advisory committee hovering over him. I think it’s a god-awful idea (sorry – the tampa/ny factions did nothing for me) – too many cooks spoil the broth. No other GM has to report and take orders from a board. Cash has every right to expect, as GM, that he’s running the baseball operations. Hank is an idiot, however – just because he wants a committee does not mean he’s going to get it. His brother really runs the team and he and Hank certainly don’t see eye to eye on many things.

  36. JK

Why do people still quote this clown?

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05.....=permalink

“My job is to win, and I’m going to do everything I can to win,” Steinbrenner said. “It’s not like I just came in off the farm, like some people claim. I’ve been around the game for 35 years, but this is my first year, along with my brother, in running the team, and I have to play with the cards I was dealt, just like Joe does.

“Whether those cards work or not will determine what happens in the off-season, and I’m going to do whatever I have to do to win,” he continued. “There’s been a lot of mistakes the last five to seven years that I had nothing to do with and Joe had nothing to do with — and quite a few things Brian had nothing to do with.”

  37. lil' m

This will not be a dull offseason . . .

  38. Evan

    Cashwho?

  39. Evan

I’m appointing Kim Jones and Carolyn Hughes to my advisory board.

  40. mel

Congrats to Scranton/Wilkes-Barrrrre. I thought there was an error on the score.

Bring up Hughes, but not Kennedy.

I hope Cashman decides to come back, but I would totally understand if he didn’t.

O/T, but Vince Young has every right to sue his therapist, Jeff Fisher, and the Memphis PD. Medical information, especially re: mental health is strictly covered by confidentiality rules. I take no pleasure in being right about his plight, and I hope that everything works out for him.

  41. For $13 I'll be a Macadamia Nut

Betsy have you even paid any attention to the Yankees fortunes in the past 4 – 5 years?

The Yankees have been moving in the wrong direction. Blown the draft top draft picks this year. Blew a “thought we had a deal” for Inoa. Igawa. Generation “Trey”. Ponson. Sexson. Rasner. Just to name a few highlights from this year.

Cashman didn’t get a SP which was a big need before the trade deadline. Nah, we got Ponson! WaHoo!

Cashman hasn’t shown very good judgement on pitching, yet the farm is being stocked with higher risk pitching over position players which are needed.

Maybe Cashman will be gone. The Yankees might want him but sometimes a move can be good for both sides. This might be one of those times.

  42. #9

Hey folks – came across this series of pics of the Pre-Renovation Yankee Stadium yes – I’m pretty nostalgic tonight – it’s also a great history lesson too:

  43. mel

Typical Hank-isode. Open mouth, say something controversial, get scolding from front office, back off statement the next day.

Like I said last night. Please say something substantive.

Not liking how the homestand has begun…

  44. Guy Incognito

    #9 very cool

What I am really looking for is photos of Yankee Stadium in the 80s and early 90s!

  45. mel

Nice recap by Jennings if you have the time.

    1. Nice perspective from Scott Strickland, who won the NL championship with the Astros in ‘05.

    2. Ian Kennedy has asked to take the ball for the Showdown.

    3. Funny line about a baseball card listing Igawa’s hometown as Charlotte, NC.

  46. Mike

Creation by destruction…fire everyone. Stir the pot a little :)

  47. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

mel agreed. Chad does an excellent job.

  48. CaptainsCorner

Honestly who cares what Cashman does. He has been given an EXTREMELY long time to fix the pitching and he hasn’t done a thing with it. If he didn’t build a good pitching staff recently when he was handed over $200m what makes anyone think that he could do it for Seattle or Philly when they hand him $5m and tell him to get 3 players with the money. Also Seattle, Philly or Washington aren’t going to pay him anywhere close to what the Yanks do. Everyone knows that money talks, but I wouldn’t be upset to see Cashman go. I think it is time to give someone else a chance.

  49. G. Love

Don’t let the door hit you in the azz Cash.

  50. ohhh mo its cano!

when the cash goes who will we have to blame?

  51. ScottButthead

Ya all so stupid, ok not stupid. First of all Hank is trying to bring in modern principles of leadership (Total Quality Leadership) for a baseball team. Not gonna work there big Hank, ergo, you lost Joe Torre, the best. Next ya gonna lost Cash. That TQL stuff only works when applied correctly. If ya wanna win, ya better use the George principle of management. He didn’t care if ya made 10 million, he would be on your azz in a New York second. Dude ya gotta step up and play hardball and == if ya can’t play, go to jersey. George knows what I’m talking about. Billy Martin would have these boys playing. Joe G., you just ain’t the guy to run a big ship. But I’ll give you another chance. Big Hank, you better show something dude. later

  52. Patrick Bateman

If Cashman has an advisory group already, they should all be fired.

    Untouchables this past off season:
    Kei Igawa
    Ian Kennedy
    Melky Cabrera
    Alan Horne
    Jose Tabata

  53. Brad

Somehow an advisory group should see to it that Buck Showalter is among them. It’s ludicrous to let his expertise and knowledge be available to another organization.

  54. 86w183

I don’t think Buck would settle for being a part of an “advisory group”. I share the view that he would be a great asset to the organization, but it would have to entail a real job.

  55. Briantrust

Any advisory group needs to include Gene Michael.

  56. Sean L

Bye-Bye Cashman. I will give you credit for rebuilding the farm but thats about it. You are possibly the worst major league talent evaluator I’ve ever seen. You have done nothing but delay the inevitable rebuilding process for about 7 years now. Thanks a lot bud, now go to San Francisco where they love paying overpaid bums.

  57. Joe29

Great article in the NY Post today. “The Mets can thank the Yankees for Beltran and Santana”. Like we really need a #1 starter and centerfielder. Pack your bags you idiot Cashman!

  58. Briantrust

Give Damon Oppenheimer credit for anyone the Yanks got in the draft the past few seasons. I give Cashman credit for bringing in David Justice, Abreu, and Nady/Marte. That’s about it.

  59. JimT

As a Red Sox fan it is my fervent hope that the Yankees keep Cashman on as GM. With a $200M payroll he has put together a team with the worst pitching staff in the American League East, a terrible fielding infield and an outfield populated with DHs.

Keep Cashman around and just keep spending, its work great over the past eight years.
