Game postponed; doubleheader tomorrow

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Sep 12, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Tonight’s game was called off. Here is the release from the Yankees:

Tonight’s game between the Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays at Yankee Stadium has been postponed due to rain and rescheduled for tomorrow, September 13 at 7:05 p.m., as the second game of a day-night doubleheader. Tickets for Friday’s game will ONLY be honored for the 7:05 p.m. game on Saturday and will NOT be honored for Saturday’s 1:05 p.m. contest.

Fans are strongly encouraged to use their tickets for tomorrow night’s rescheduled game at 7:05 p.m. as there is no ability to exchange tickets for another game in 2008.

Those fans unable to use their tickets for the rescheduled contest tomorrow at 7:05 p.m., may instead exchange them for tickets to any home game at the new Yankee Stadium in the 2009 season, subject to availability and only after tickets are made available to the general public at a date to be determined in the future.

At the time tickets are available to be exchanged, fans may only do so in person at the new Yankee Stadium ticket office.

———–

Akron-Trenton rained out as well. Game 3 will be tomorrow. A Game 5, if needed, would be Monday.

There is good news: Mighty Scranton is putting the smack down on Durham, leading 11-1 in the fifth. Annie Savoy is in tears. Phil Hughes has fanned 10 through four innings and allowed one run. That’s right, 10.

Phil Hughes is going to be just fine, people. He’s 22. People are acting like he’s washed up. You know what Andy Pettitte was doing when he was 22? Pitching in the International League. Give the guy a chance.

Excellent news about Scranton – i’ve got to try and get to a game there next year, maybe as a present to myself after visiting my in-laws – and Phil Hughes. Excellent point, Pete. Let’s everyone give the kid a chance, and not demand greatness and the AllStars team/HOF right off the bat.

  11. Trevor September 12th, 2008 at 9:06 pm

Fact of the matter is rumors of Phil Hughes demise have been greatly exaggerated.

I’d shut him down until AFL and bring up Garcia instead. We need to see what we have w/ him and he needs his innings up more. Hughes will be coming off a championship there is no need to dampen his mind here.

I’m losing respect for that third base dug-out. You know these used to be done a different way with the Joe Torre regime all the way down the farm system.

What??!!! Joe Torre had control over what was done in the farm? The same Joe T who didn’t know who certain players were till they were up a few weeks?

Oh and they shouldn’t remove Miranda because you are excusing him, leave him in to get hit??? WHAT!!!

Not sure how a major league manager can either get the blame or credit on how a minor league player with zero major league experience plays the game. Somebody needs to get a grip on reality.

From Chad Jennings blog, now you’d think (well maybe not) would give out correct information. Instead of insinuating that he was jawing with the dugout.

Top sixth: This has gotten absurd, but let me tell you about Juan Miranda.

On that home run — which was a moon shot by the way — Miranda posed in the box, then put one fist in the air as he started toward first base. It was disrespectful, and the Durham bench let him know about it. I thought Miley would take him out, but Miranda went back to first base and immediately turned to the Durham dugout to appologize. He was tapping his chest and obviously saying he was sorry for showing them up. One of the Bulls was still on the field, and Miranda apologized to him personally.

Incredibly stupid moment, followed by Miranda doing what he could to make it right.

  58. Wilson September 12th, 2008 at 9:31 pm

holdstrong, you are 100% right. But most of these fans think Hughes is going to be the next Clemens and they get giddy over minor league numbers.

We have seen this story before. Same thing with Kennedy.

If Hughes was really doing as good as his numbers would indicate, Cashman would have brought him up by now. But Cash has seen the light and knows that isn’t how to judge minor leaguers.

  59. Betsy September 12th, 2008 at 9:31 pm

I saw the middle three innings that Phil pitched and missed the first and 5th. I really, really like how Phil didn’t mess around after the team scored those runs for him. I also love that he was able to dig himself out of a deep hole and only give up one run in the fourth. Then, he had a great 5th. I saw some absolutely nasty curves, but I missed the cutter on the last K of the 5th that I read was utterly filthy. Sort of an odd outing for Phil, but mostly he looked terrific. I forgot just how big he is – he looked like a giant on the mound. Also, the Durham announcers sucked. LOL, they said they couldn’t tell if Phil was pitching well or not because he had a ton of run support – they wanted to see what he would do with zeros on the board. All I have to say to that is -watch last Saturday’s game against Pawtucket. Period.

There will be way too many “Phil is just a #2 or #3 starter” or “we have Joba, so Phil is expendable” comments from now until Phil retires, but it’s like banging your head against a brickwall. People will believe what they want to, regardless of logic, but what can .you do? Phil just has to go out there and pitch like he’s capable. Problem is, if he struggles (like every young pitcher who has ever put on a uniform), fans are going to say he’s overrated. Phil will not be allowed any leeway whatsoever – he must be perfect.

  60. jax gmen September 12th, 2008 at 9:34 pm

Wilson that is a good point

the fact that cashman has not even mentioned him or is planning on bringing him up is a telling sign. he is letting the transition year end with ponson and pavano.
thats how little he thinks of hughes or kennedy- he is letting pavano showcase himself so he can get a nice contract next year at our expense instead of bringing up the kids.

  61. Tom September 12th, 2008 at 9:35 pm

Yankees starters era is 4.65. Of course geeting Wang and Joba back helps. Signing CC should be the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd priority of the front office. Hughes developing into what scouts claim he can be would be great too.

Wang, joba, cc, hughes would give the a young pitching core (nobody under 30).

  62. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and hopefully the offense won't be so offensive. September 12th, 2008 at 9:36 pm

I thought Miley would take him out, but Miranda went back to first base and immediately turned to the Durham dugout to appologize. He was tapping his chest and obviously saying he was sorry for showing them up. One of the Bulls was still on the field, and Miranda apologized to him personally.

I wonder if these idiot announcers would feel that Girardi should get credit for Miranda apologizing?

    :P

Would have been nice if those fools mentioned that.

  63. Brandon (We have a soft captain and a softer sidekick..true story)..."we paid today, we lose today, das it". September 12th, 2008 at 9:36 pm

Love him or hate him, Miranda has been pulled but he has a finisher’s mentality at the plate, sac fly, a HR, 6 RBI, doesn’t swing at much crap.

  64. Jorge Tabata September 12th, 2008 at 9:38 pm

Rightly or Wrongly, Hughes will always be judged against Santana. Cashman did not put him in a position to succeed by penciling him in as the #3 starter this year. He will be a #3 starter someday, not yet though. You have to shield young players in NY. Cashman did not realize the ramifications of talking up Hughes and Kennedy to be something they are not.

  65. Betsy September 12th, 2008 at 9:38 pm

Wilson, I disagree. Phil needs to get his innings in and he needs to work on stuff in the minors that he just could not get away with in the majors. Also, I love Brian, but he was ridiculously underwhelming in his “praise” of Phil’s performance last week. That’s just wrong. 11 K’s in 8 innings of shutout baseball, with just 4 hits allowed, is dealing. By every account, Phil looked great – outstanding control, nasty curves, and I think I read that he threw some terrific changes and cutters as well. What more could the Yankees ask for? No, IMO, they are leaving him down here because they know they rushed him in 2007 and he needs the development time.

Also, Ian Kennedy should simply not mentioned in the same breath with Phil Hughes. They are completely different talents.

  66. Nick in SF September 12th, 2008 at 9:39 pm

You people that keep hyping Phil are deluded. He’s already 22. It’s over.

  68. Dave D September 12th, 2008 at 9:41 pm

Atleast reward the kid for his 2 outstanding performances. I am starting to believe that Cahsman may be shopping him this off-season if he does not atleast let him get 1 start in the majors.

  69. Tank September 12th, 2008 at 9:42 pm

Battle is very intruging. Maybe he needed to get promoted to get kick-started a la Jackson

  70. GreenBeret7 September 12th, 2008 at 9:43 pm

It’s good that the wizards declaring Hughes a bust at age 22 were never in charge when Ford came up at age 21to make 12 starts….Mel Stottlemyre at age 22 and lost 20 games in ’66…or Guidry at age 24 to make his ML debut or when he got knocked around in ’76. These guys may have been traded. Stottlemyre probably showed no heart in ’66.

  71. Betsy September 12th, 2008 at 9:44 pm

Jorge Tabata, if Phil ends up a #3, then I will consider him to be a relative bust……..I know a #3 starter is nothing to sneeze at, but that is not what Phil projected to be. If people want to label him a future #3, that is their preogative, but I say it’s unfair to Phil and extremely premature to say the least. What this says to me is that fans are pathetically impatient and it also foreshadows some future outrageous comments the next time a highly promising young player (are you reading this, Austin Jackson) is promoted. Jackson had better not dream of struggling or the fan base will turn against him. Anyone not named Joba will have the wrath of Yankee fans visited upon them should they dare to struggle. I’m being slightly dramatic, but only slightly. Fans disgust me.

One more thing about Santana. Cashman held onto Hughes not because he thought Phil would outpitch Johan this year, but because he had utter faith in Phil’s future as a stud pitcher. The fact that fans want to judge the trade on this year alone (which is idiotic) means nothing.

  72. jennifer- I got your back Girardi September 12th, 2008 at 9:45 pm

    I think Nick was sarcastic.

  73. Mike September 12th, 2008 at 9:47 pm

I still think that the Yankees are handling Hughes the right way in regards to keeping him in the minors for the rest of the season. At the end of the day, this past season has been a year to forget for him. He looked absolutely clueless at the beginning of the season and then injuries cut short the rest of it. He is better off ending the year on a high note and then going out and hopefully dominate the AFL in the winter.

In regards to people thinking the Yanks might be showcasing him, I’m not so sure that I agree with you. If Cashman is still working for the organization, I highly doubt it since he has basically staked his legacy on Hughes being a top notch SP. When someone refuses to deal a prospect for two of the best pitchers in the league (first Santana, then Sabathia), then you better hope he works out in the ML. However, if Cashman is pushed out the door (which there is a possibility of), then who knows at that point.

Battle, if NYY puts him on the 40 man roster should be in Trenton for at least part of next year. Illness and injuries derailed him early in his career and it took him a long time to catch up, but, he has a world of talent. Somebody will take him in the Rule 5 draft. He’s still only 23.

  85. Tom K September 12th, 2008 at 9:57 pm

I don’t think Cashman is showcasing Phil Hughes; rather, I am getting more of the feeling that Hughes is where he should have been all along.

We saw the flashes of brilliance last year with Hughes (the no-hitter that wasn’t, the playoff game vs. Cleveland, and other starts as well)…but when a player has immense ability (which Hughes does possess), than he is going to show signs of greatness…even if he is not quite ready to be a consistent major leaguer.

A few weeks ago, I was all for bringing up Hughes to let him get in some major league work. But now I feel they did the right thing with him; perhaps the organization decided that the guy simply was not ready for the big leagues yet.

What would I do with him after tonight? Tough call. I may bring him up and let him pitch in a game or two out of the bullpen just to let him test himself a bit. But I would not be opposed to just sending him off to get ready for the Arizona league.

  86. GreenBeret7 September 12th, 2008 at 10:00 pm

Tom, like Guidry, Johnson didn’t have a winning season until age 26. He was 24 when he made his debut.

  87. Jorge Tabata September 12th, 2008 at 10:01 pm

    Betsy-

Apples to oranges when comparing Hughes to Jackson. First off Austin has no fanfare. Only the die hard knows who he is… the Francessa’s and Madden’s of the world do not. Secondly, he will be hitting 9th in front of the likes of Damon, Abreu, ARod, Jeter, Matsui, Posada, Teixeria (hopefully) etc. there will be no pressure on him. If he has a 0-4, 3 K/4 LOB game, not many will notice and it won’t cost us the game. If Hughes has a 2.2 IP, 9 H, 8 ER game… he will get blamed and he will not give us a chance to win.

It is MUCH easier for a position player to adapt in our lineup. He has lightening rods like Alex and Jeter hitting in front of him, nobody will rely on the 9th place hitter. We carried Melky’s subpar bat for 2 years.

Garcia and De La Rosa are studs and they can move fast now that they are in Trenton. They need to be protected. Garcia is seemingly healthy after the TJS and Wilkins seemed to have sorted out his mechanics and fixed his control problems. Infact, I’d bring Garcia up after the playoffs, just as a reward.

  89. jennifer- I got your back Girardi September 12th, 2008 at 10:04 pm

Wow who said tampa’s pitching is good. With a 18 run deficit they still can’t throw strikes.

  90. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and hopefully the offense won't be so offensive. September 12th, 2008 at 10:05 pm

    20-2

  91. GreenBeret7 September 12th, 2008 at 10:06 pm

Brandon, De La Rosa is safe. He still has a year to go.

  92. E-Rod September 12th, 2008 at 10:06 pm

Albaladejo will be off the 40 man roster… Him and Britton are not needed with all the talented arms we need to protect.

  93. jax gmen September 12th, 2008 at 10:09 pm

    coke should be untouchable

lefty pumping 96 mph FBs, only 26,

dont sell low like we did on tabata

  94. Brandon (We have a soft captain and a softer sidekick..true story)..."we paid today, we lose today, das it". September 12th, 2008 at 10:09 pm

I’d bring Garcia up after the playoffs, just as a reward.

Not just a reward but to see how he first reacts to ML hitters.

  95. Mark (Brett is back) September 12th, 2008 at 10:09 pm

It will be cool to follow Arizona Fall League, and the Hawaian Winter League this year. Being a Yanks fan is a 365 day job haha. Can’t wait to see Brackman in the HWL.

  96. Tank September 12th, 2008 at 10:12 pm

AFL – Hughes, Garcia, Sanchez, Jackson
    HWL- Brackman, Bleich, Romine

We will probably send Eduardo Sosa and some other guys to the VWL too.

This combined with the FA hot stove should make for a fun winter.

  97. GreenBeret7 September 12th, 2008 at 10:13 pm

Garcia got hammered the other night, didn’t he? Why put him on the 40 man roster before it’s necessary?

  98. Doreen September 12th, 2008 at 10:13 pm

    Jorge Tabata -

To be fair, Melky Cabrera’s bat was not sub-par last year or the year before. He struggled severely this season, to be sure, but he was not “carried” his first two seasons.

By the time Jackson becomes a household name, he will have pressure. And because of the popularity of blogs and increased interest in the minor leagues, Jackson’s name will bubble up. Especially since there are, right now, very few position players in the Yankees system projected to make an impact in the next couple of years. And he’s a CF, a position of high visibility.

  99. jennifer- I got your back Girardi September 12th, 2008 at 10:13 pm

Okay can this ump just call them strikes. I mean they are down by 18.

  100. Brandon (We have a soft captain and a softer sidekick..true story)..."we paid today, we lose today, das it". September 12th, 2008 at 10:14 pm

    THAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA YANKEES WIN !

  101. Mark (Brett is back) September 12th, 2008 at 10:14 pm

Kei Igawa jumping on the pile LOL.

  102. Dr. J September 12th, 2008 at 10:14 pm

That is actually a very good idea to bring up Garcia now… his stuff is good enough to get out ML hitters. He has to be added to the 40 anyway.

  103. GreenBeret7 September 12th, 2008 at 10:14 pm

Mark, I believe MILB has the Fall and winter leagues on the radio feeds.

  104. jennifer- I got your back Girardi September 12th, 2008 at 10:14 pm

And of course they had to break away. Shelley kept jumping on the top of the pile.

  105. Magic 8 (base)Ball September 12th, 2008 at 10:16 pm

Wake pitches a gem! 8 shutout innings.

Elimination party number also down to 8.

    Everybody, together: Whaaaaa whaaaaaa whaaaaaa!!!!

  106. RalphieD September 12th, 2008 at 10:16 pm

    congrats to SWB

  107. Rebecca--Optimist Prime September 12th, 2008 at 10:17 pm

I feel so happy for Shelley.

He always seems to be so happy out there on the diamond…if there’s any yankee that epitomizes ‘for love of the game’ it’s him

  108. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and hopefully the offense won't be so offensive. September 12th, 2008 at 10:17 pm

I think I just saw Shelley arm bumping with someone. lol

    Hope no one got hurt

  109. GreenBeret7 September 12th, 2008 at 10:17 pm

Any player coming up to join the Yankees and plays one of the glamour positions is going to have a bull’s eye on his back. Glamour positions are shortstop, third, catcher and center field.

  110. Brandon (We have a soft captain and a softer sidekick..true story)..."we paid today, we lose today, das it". September 12th, 2008 at 10:18 pm

The PA guy called them Scranton MilksBarre what an a-hole

  111. Doreen September 12th, 2008 at 10:19 pm

    GB7 -

I would add pitcher to that list, as well.

  112. jennifer- I got your back Girardi September 12th, 2008 at 10:20 pm

    Congrats to SWB team.

  113. Doreen September 12th, 2008 at 10:20 pm

Make that top of the rotation starting pitcher, if we’re talking glamour.

  114. Brandon (We have a soft captain and a softer sidekick..true story)..."we paid today, we lose today, das it". September 12th, 2008 at 10:20 pm

Kei Igawa has earned that pile

  115. Doreen September 12th, 2008 at 10:22 pm

    Congratulations to SWB Yankees.

  116. R-Tek September 12th, 2008 at 10:23 pm

As a 9th place hitter in a hypothetical lineup of Damon-Jeter-Abreu-Arod-Teixeria-Posada-Matsui-Cano, Austin Jackson will absolutely no pressure on him. If the offense is working well and scoring runs, will people really care if Jackson struggles? If it persists for that long, he will be sent down anyway. Now if Cashman makes Jackson the leadoff hitter when he first comes up, then yes, there will be pressure.

Are people seriously comparing a 9th place hitter to a starting pitcher? Nobody is saying he won’t have any pressure…. but relative to Hughes? Not even close.

  117. Mo September 12th, 2008 at 10:23 pm

that’s what we are reduced to. Celebrating a league championship in a league that the gm called weak.

  118. GreenBeret7 September 12th, 2008 at 10:23 pm

In Pittsburgh, McLouth needs a single in the 9th inning to hit for the cycle. Been a lot of them , lately. More no hitters than cycles in history.

  119. Rich September 12th, 2008 at 10:24 pm

doesnt it seem a little ridic at this point clinging to the old “phil no hit texas into the 6th” line considering that bum karstens almost had a nohitter?

  120. Mark (Brett is back) September 12th, 2008 at 10:24 pm

Sept 16th is the Bricktown Showdown. I wonder who will get the nod for Scranton to start, and who if any players they want to bring to New York for tomorrow

  121. steve September 12th, 2008 at 10:24 pm

a-rod takes the pressure off everyone

if the offense fails, they will blame him not jackson

  122. GreenBeret7 September 12th, 2008 at 10:25 pm

My error, Doreen…especially if they are at the advanced age of 22 or 23.

  123. dan 771 September 12th, 2008 at 10:26 pm

mo, exactly and thats what is sad. even cashman acknowledged that triple A is irrelevant.

Are you a die hard, or a spoiled Yankees fan, That AAA is part of our system so your damn right we’re cheering thier achievement. Take a hike tonight if you don’t like it.

  125. GreenBeret7 September 12th, 2008 at 10:27 pm

McLouth almost snuck one through the infield…safe on an error.

  126. Doreen September 12th, 2008 at 10:28 pm

    Tough being a Yankee. :)

  127. Trevor September 12th, 2008 at 10:28 pm

I think Hughes will get a call up…not sure will he pitch though.
And we’ll finally see Melancon and Robertson will be back.

  128. youk September 12th, 2008 at 10:29 pm

Red Sox complete 15th shut out, most in baseball this year!

Just another nail in the “miracle”.

  129. Brandon (We have a soft captain and a softer sidekick..true story)..."we paid today, we lose today, das it". September 12th, 2008 at 10:31 pm

Poor school systems in Boston since thier fans can’t read the name of the team blog.

  130. Erik September 12th, 2008 at 10:34 pm

Now if only you’d say the same about Ian Kennedy, Pete!

  131. youk September 12th, 2008 at 10:35 pm

Brandon’s poor school system……can’t spell “thier”

Oh and another thing I can’t stand listening to bandwagon Yankee fans whining and crying, yes the ML team is bad this year the A ball the AA and AAA deserve props. These are teams are players come from, Jeter was in AAA, Posada, Bernie, you damn right this group gets my props tonight, Dave Miley after the year he had and the death of his son he gets my appreciation to a hard season.

  134. Coenbro September 12th, 2008 at 10:38 pm

Is this all we have left to celebrate? Oh well . . . YEAH HA!

  135. Fredo Corleone September 12th, 2008 at 10:52 pm

“Melky Cabrera’s bat was not sub-par last year or the year before.”

Yes it was. It was just a lot further below par this year. He’s a lousy offensive player at the MLB level. Not good. Not average. Considerably below average.

  136. Therston September 12th, 2008 at 10:55 pm

Cashman is purposely trying to turn the hype machine down with his recent comments so the kids can just come up and pitch without answering a million questions about how they compare to the best pitcher in baseball.

  137. mos September 12th, 2008 at 11:21 pm

Any chance ESPN will be picking up the make-up game? Down in Austin we don’t get too many Yankee games on TV, and me and the boy were all set in our matching Yankee jerseys to watch it tonight.

  138. joe September 12th, 2008 at 11:23 pm

yeah mos, according to yahoo sports schedule, the 2nd game will be on espn, my 9
