Rip Van Winkle had the same problem

Peter Abraham
September

Carl Pavano on his stiff left hip: “I’m at a spot right now where I’m starting to wake up muscles I haven’t used in a while.”

Girardi said that Pavano should be able to make his next start. Well that’s a relief.

By no means do I believe the Patriots can win the Super Bowl without Tom Brady. And that’s all that really matters. But it is nice to know that even without the best player in the league, the Patriots are still much better than the lowly Jets.

Yeah, Pete. It wasn’t purdy, but like Peyton said they’re all sweet.

Pete Abe takes a vicious shot at Jets fans on his blog!

Meanwhile, Giants fans chuckle at it all.

Question: does anyone know what ‘quarterback passer rating’ means? I’m looking at the box score of the Pats/Jets game and I see that M. Cassel has a rating of 89.9 and B. Favre has a rating of 85.6. Is a lower number better? ‘Cos this Favre guy is supposed to be really good, right?

  4. RalphieD

A Jax with a 2 run opposite field single

  5. RalphieD

    btw thunder winning 2-0

  6. GreenBeret7

With any luck, the Patriots will end up back in the dumper. It took them abot 40 years to ever amount to anything but a good laugh. That’s where they’ll return, and when they do, the vaunted fan base will disappear with them.

  7. RalphieD

    scratch that…1 run scored :) ..1-0

  8. Nick in SF

    “18-1″ is the new “1918″.

Also nice to know that the refs are still in the cheatriots pockets.

  10. Ashish Skaria

Pete, that’s not very nice!! :(

    Nick,

You’re like a Sox fan. You win recently and you act like you’ve been winning forever. :)

  12. Justin C.

2 bad they arent better than the giants 18-1

  13. Nick in SF

mel, I’ll ignore that very ugly and unwarranted comparison and just point out that the Giants have 3 Super Bowl wins during the duration of my fandom. But it’s true, they’ve never had a perfect season…

  14. Peter Abraham

    Green Beret:

40 years? Um, not quite. They became a franchise in 1960 and played in the AFL title game in 1963. They made the NFL playoffs in 1976, ‘78 and their first Super Bowl in 1986.

They returned to the Super Bowl in 1997 and won it 2001.

As for when they’ll return to “the dumper” they have managed the salary cap better than most every team in the game and have great flexibility for future moves. They also have a new stadium, stable ownership, one of the best coaches and a smart player personnel man in Scott Pioli, who recently signed a new contract with the team.

While I realize that writing bitter posts is your mission in life, try and mix in a few facts next time.

Wait, I know, blame the media!

    Thanks

  15. you gotta have faith (i miss posada)(phil coke is awesome)

whats really going to be a good game is the giants vs patriots

i cant wait for that but for now, lets go giants!

btw i actually really wanted the jets to win today just so that curt schilling would shut the heck up

why is Pavano getting starts? are we trying to help him find a job next year? we cant be assessing whether to try to resign him…..so the only conclusion is Cash is trying to prove something, but I dont know what…..why waste starts with him, when we can use one of the kids at this point?

  19. you gotta have faith (i miss posada)(phil coke is awesome)

    kenthadley:

well with both razz and siddy out of the rotation, and both aceves and hughes replacing them, who replaces pavano?

  20. hank hal

    I guess Rasner replaces Pavano

  21. Nick in SF

Please no more Rasner. Haven’t we suffered enough?

  22. GreenBeret7

Yes, PA, you’re right. The difference between the 1963 season and 1986 is 33 years. If I’m not mistaken, that is about. You seem to be overly protective of a team that for most of that time didn’t know even existed. Perhaps you were part of the “fans” that wore paper bags over your head at games that Bill Sullivan and Victor Kiam couldn’t even give tickets away to see.

Your bitterness is what’s showing. I have my issues with the media and it’s because of frirst hand knowledge, so, I treat all the same way. I don’t invent the reasons, but, you seem to do so. You have issues with players, people that visit these boards and seem to enjoy the conflict. Hey, it’s your board, but, when it come back, don’t get your panties in a wad. Other than that, I enjoy this board, but, I’m not going to muffle my words because it’s against your media pals. If they’re wrong, I’ll say so.

  23. patrick max

What about Karstens? I haven’t heard anything about him, I always loved how he pitched with a broken leg.

If he’s available, I’d give him Pavano’s slot.

  24. Nick in SF

    I think 86 – 63 = 23, no?

  25. Nick in SF

patrick max, Karstens is a Pirate. So technically, he’s not available for us.

  26. you gotta have faith (i miss posada)(phil coke is awesome)

    patrick max:

i beleive Karstens is not available, mainly because he is pitching for the pirates now lol

  27. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Patrick, I guess you missed the trade. He along with others went to Pitt for Nady and Marte. When Jeff first got there he did well, but he hasn’t been that great lately.

  28. Al from BK( That one hurt, Calvin Pace is still the man.)

Just for fun 18-1, 1918 and all that good stuff.

My error, but, the fact that they have been a league joke for most of that time is my point. I put them in the same category as the Mets organization in the way it was run. When they stop winning, the fans will disappear. Just like the Celts after Bird left, and the Bruins when they went bad. The Bruins are still in Boston, aren’t they? I wouldn’t care about the Boston teams one way or another if it weren’t for their overbearing fan base. They seem to believe that they invented sports.

  31. you gotta have faith (i miss posada)(phil coke is awesome)

okay so even though it doesnt really matter to the yanks anymore

the sux next series are with the rays at tropicana, who should we root for?

i think im going to root for the rays, cause if we lose the white sox gain ground on the sux, same for the twins, but unlike other posters here i dont want the yanks to just lay down and have teams walk all over them

    Aaron Rodgers is AMAZING!!! ;-)

    game tied in Trenton game.

  34. BBFan

Today was a good day for Jeter and Arod.
Jeter tied Gehrig for the hits in the Yankee Stadium.
Arod has another consecutive season of 100 runs and 100 RBIs continuing his conistency. Sure, some will question Arod’s timing, but the bottom line is he still is the best consistent producer on the team.

  35. COL 88

If anyone has noticed, Girardi has improved somewhat.

    - Aside from these past couple of days, he has used a set lineup every day for the past month, lefty or righty. Hasn’t rested anyone.

    - Finally benched Cano today and called out Damon a few days ago. Looks like he is showing the feisty side of him that we hoped to see more of.

    - Much quicker hook with his starters. I guess thats a result of having a 40 man roster but he doesn’t fool around anymore he goes straight to the pen.

    - Usage of Marte has been much better and he has settled his 8th inning with Bruney.

    - Realized Edwar/Veras can be shaky and have been reduced to lower leverage situations.

    - Finally has given up and is playing the kids.

  36. GreenBeret7

Whitney ties up the Akron-Trenton game with a 6th inning homer…1-1.

  37. AJ YANKS

Al, what are your thoughts on the Jets today? Not a Jets fan, but just wondering…

  38. GreenBeret7

I’m not sure about Rodriguez being the most consistant, year in and year out, but, he is about the only one the Yanks have that can carry a team for a month.

  39. randy l

“While I realize that writing bitter posts is your mission in life, try and mix in a few facts next time.

while greenberet7 and i don’t exactly see eye to eye( and i figure that’s just because he didn’t spend enough time on baseball because he had a few other more important things to do) i find peter’s comments puzzling.

i will simply say the more i get to know of p.a the less i respect him.

  40. GreenBeret7

Pavano was pulled because of an injury and, in case you haven’t noticed, young pitchers is all that’s in the bullpen, except for Rivera and Marte.

  41. Zooboy

Pavano has a stiff “left hip”. Is that not code for bruised “buttock”?

  42. Forntoso

If the Steelers let us borrow Karstens, then why not give him a start next week? Doubt they would though.

  43. GreenBeret7

Randy, the issue is my dislike for the media and they way they write imaginary stories if there aren’t any juicy stories to print. Of course, I have no use for politicians or lawyers, either, but, that doesn’t seem to hit home.

“i wouldn’t trade cano for pedroia.”

And that is a big reason why the Sox are where they are right now and the Yankees are already polishing their golf clubs for October.

  46. GreenBeret7

Zooboy, have you ever had a hip flexor injury? Do you know what a hip flexor is or what it does?

This was a cramp, and he should make his next start.

Of course, the neanderthals in the stands need a reason to boo, so, they figure Cano, Rodriguez and finally Pavano were the perfect targets.

  49. GreenBeret7

Youk, Boston teams and Boston fans have had a lot of practice getting an early start on their off seasons and polishing their clubs, haven’t they. When the Red Sox tank, will you till be here? Doubtful.

  50. randy l

    gb7-

i had an interesting email exchange with bob ryan when he was bad mouthing nomar when he was leaving town. i told him that the game belonged to players like nomar and that he should show more respect. he flat out said that the game belonged to the fans and to writers like him because they were” the keepers” of the game.

i replied that i didn’t think may tickets would be sold to watch him and the fans.

somehow bob ryan thinks he’s more important to baseball than baseball players like nomar. now that’s one point of view.

… and it seems that ryan is not the only writer in the business with an inflated sense of importance.

I will readily admit that the Yankees have a much more stellar history in terms of making it to the playoffs and winning world series.

I am just amazed by some fans insistence that Cano is so much better than Pedroia. If that is the case let Cano prove it instead of putting forth half an effort that even his manager is fed up with.

Make fun of Pedroia for his hair etc, but you will never see Pedroia dogging it like Cano does.

  56. randy l

“And that is a big reason why the Sox are where they are right now and the Yankees are already polishing their golf clubs for October.”

actually i thought it was because cashman weakened the yankees to such a point that the red sox won by default.

the red sox are not a great team. without manny and ortiz( he’s done as a superstar) the future of the offense is mediocre.

have fun with the angels. i would recommend wd 40 as a lubricant for getting those red sox golf clubs ready for their early exit.

  57. GreenBeret7

When Pedroia hits .340 or drives in 97 runs or develops an arm like Cano, come on back. Pedroia fits in well, along with Youkilis, in Boston. Perfect place for pompous, arrogant jerks.

  61. randy l

    youk-

just read your last comment. let’s cut to te chase and get down to a very real problem that the red sox have.what’s with the movement towards an all white starting team? is there some perception in boston that gritty white guys are better players than latin or african american players?

  62. GreenBeret7

Awards have been given to the wrong players way too often for them to matter that much. Would you like a list of those mistakes?

  63. Joey's Poodle

Here’s a link to a story from the Times about how it was when reporters treated players with more reverence:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09.....ref=slogin

  64. Nick in SF

It takes a very strange mindset to put the value of the so-called “keepers of the game” (which is ridiculous in itself — “contemporaneous choniclers of the game” would be more accurate) above the game itself.

The writers and TV guys come and go. Fans come and go. Players come and go. It’s the game itself that remains and endures. Bad Bob Ryan, bad!

As for randy and GB7, I think you’re both great contributors to this blog — usually. But why the anger towards Pete Abe? And why the rudeness towards him? Presumably neither of you feel THAT strongly about your issues with him, as you remain loyal readers and visitors. It’s all kind of strange.

  65. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

I actually should say what that is. Have no fear you can click it. It is a Korean baseball fight.

  66. mel

Wow. Didn’t realize that if the Phils win tonight they’ll be in a dead heat tie with the Brewers.

  67. whoa

winning by 9 is hardly “much better”

  68. Josh

As much as I hate Pedroia, I would much rather have him playing than Cano. The guy is in the running for an MVP award, while Cano is being benched for his lack of effort. Not really much of an arguement there.

Unfortunately, I think the success of Boston will last for awhile. They have a good lineup that can play small ball when they aren’t hitting HRs. And their pitching isn’t too bad either.

Sorry to break it to you guys, but I’m not gonna ignore the facts like Sox fans ignore our 26 rings.

  69. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

    3 outs away.

  70. youk

    randy,

There has been a considerable amount of discussion in baseball circles about the current shortage of African/American players. Most teams are facing this issue.

The Sox have no agenda in developing an all white lineup. It is a tired old generalization. People used to say the same thing about the Celtics and they were one of the very first teams to have a black coach in Bill Russell.

  71. Rob NY

GB7- “… They seem to believe that they invented sports.”

They sort of invented Basketball…. well Springfield. And I would take Cano’s upside over Pedroia’s upside any day. That’s not me being a pom pom waver, that’s Pedroia’s driver’s license reading 5′5″.

  72. JWagg

i think you’ve got a pretty good read on me by now, so i’ll simply say that i get some pretty strange emails from p.a. from time to time. they started when i took exception to p.a calling girardi a liar on the blog .

to tell you the truth , the value of this blog for me is the back and forth with sj44, murphydog, doreen, you, whozat, raymagnetic, gb7, cb etc.

i only mention it because you asked. it’s not something i spend time thinking about.
for some reason , i can really piss off writers. dan shaunessy sent me 3-4 vitriolic sarcastic emails during a red sox game a few years ago. to his credit he calmed down in a humorous way in the end.

maybe i’m gifted at being annoying to a certain kind of person.

  82. GreenBeret7

Nick, I have no issues with PA….only with media types with an obvious agenda. If his job is to present an unbiased look and approach, which it should be, fine, no problem. It’s when that it’s just the reverse, then, I’ve got to call on it. It’s his board and will let all know that. He then says it’s an open forum for an exchange of dialogue on baseball, which it must be, since there are no controls on the more than obvious trolling. I’m all for baseball talk than this sort of dialogue, but, if the door gets opened on something else, I’m stepping through.

I will and have avoided any and all discussion on politics, religion and race. I’ve seen enough of that for a lifetime. It’s the same thing with watching the attacks on some ohe posters who are obviously female.

Hell, over half of these women know more about baseball then the guys do. Others are trying to learn it and get hammered and nothing is said. It’s when friends of the host or the media in general get questioned that the fangs come out and snide remarks appear. If it’s good for one, it should be good for all.

Well, enough of my rambling rant. It should provide someone with enough ammunition to attack.

  88. arods boy

Hey last season Arod did what was expected. He propelled the Yankees into the playoffs. He hit in the clutch, he did great things, and with his potential and ability he should do that.
However the other four seasons he has been equal to a number 6 or 7 hitter in clutch situations. He hasnt even been a complimentary player in the clutch every year except last year.
He was on some talented Seattle teams, and now some talented Yankee teams, and as the best player or one of the top talents on those teams his play has a lot to do with weather his team wins or loses, because he gets control over those situations. He comes up in huge spots in games, and he supposed to execute, and execute better than most since he is so talented. None of his teams (where he was the go to guy) has had a sniff of the World Series

  89. GreenBeret7

Randy, I prefer the line that Ted Williams used when referring to the media. He never used the word “writers”. He called them “The Knights Of The Keyboard”. Ol’ Ted could turn a phrase.

  90. Peter Abraham

    Green Beret:

I don’t ask for much from posters. But please refrain from crude sexual references. There are many women who post here. Show some respect, please. Did you not learn that in the service?

Also, while you’re free to hate the media for whatever reason, please do not liken people to a terrible disease like cancer. Is that supposed to be funny? It’s not. People come here to read about a baseball team, not to be reminded about death.

Just try to show a little class, that’s all I ask.

Exactly what “crude, sexual references” did I make? as for the cancer reference, it’s a only a remark made to refer to those writers….not to poke fun at the desease. I, of all people know about the desease. I doubt many took it as a joke about the desease.

  101. GreenBeret7

Oh, well…I need to borrow Bob Ryan’s dictionary to learn to spell disease.

  102. Peter Abraham

    Green Beret:

Likening people to cancer is not necessary. And posting about “bedroom performance” or whatever it is you wrote (I deleted it) isn’t necessary either.

  103. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing

Gonna be an awful lot of deleting going on, if thats a no no.

  106. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing

I’m not fond of its usage at all either, Pat. I lost a grandparent to cancer.

I’m just pointing out that its seems a bit inconsistent. I’ve never seen anyone chastened for saying that about a Yankee player. It should be policed consistently, thats all I’m saying.

    Randy I,

The implosion this season has been a bit of a shock. The symptoms we’ve seen over the last few years (poor situational hitting, aging players, sleeping thru April and May, etc) might have been a sign of things to come. What’s the saying about chickens coming home to roost? I grew up in the 70s rooting for Reggie, Thurm, Nettles etc so I was just grateful for the team to make the postseason then. Those playoffs against KC (Brett’s still one of the toughest outs I’ve ever seen) were always close and the Sox were damn tough too.
I think like many fans, I was overly optimistic about Hughes and Kennedy. I still like Hughes but Kennedy needs more time or a change of scenery or a greater attitude adjustment. I usually read the blog rather than post, but my last post was to trade Cano if the right deal can be swung. Not gonna get into it here as the usual posters (SJ, yourself, Whozat, Doreen, TK, Murphydog, CB [where'd he go??], Green Beret, nick in Sf) do a much better job at that than I do. I hope the Stein brothers really do read this blog and surround Cash with good baseball people and rehaul this team considerably.

interesting what you posted about your exchanges with Shaugnessy. I’ve read his column maybe a dozen times and he’s always struck me as being impartial for a RS nation journalist. Maybe I’ve read him on his good days. Years back, a friend of mine from college who worked at the Globe confused him with Ryan. He was pretty ticked at that and walked off cursing under his breath.

    Pete,

When you bash a New York team by calling them “lowly” hours after a tough loss on a New York blog, expect a backlash. But hey, that’s what you were looking for anyway so you could continue to express your false sense of elitist views.

Take some of your own advice and show some class.

P.S. I am a Giants fan, not Jets.

    Keith:

    1. Calm down.

    2. I’ve had a friendly back-and-forth with Jets fans over the years here.

    3. Talking about football is an “a false sense of elitist views?” How is that exactly?

    Seriously, bro, just calm down.

Which team is the sucker to give Pavano a contract next year?

    19-10=much better?

Ok, first off the Jets stink, and will never win another Superbowl. I was a Jets fan up until a few years ago, and switched my alliegence to the Giants. I was sick of Herm, and his lousy on field coaching. I didn’t stick around for the “Mangenius”, who Belichick makes look like the “Manloseris” every chance he gets. I feel for Jets fans who still root for the team, like the poor guy in the construction helmet at every game, who’s probably hammered out of his gord six hours before the game. I actually tuned into today’s game, for laughs, after the BIG BLUE took the Rams out behind the woodshed and slapped the taste out of their mouths, and got to see Brett Farve age 10 years on the Jets sidelines. I mean, to lose to Tom Brady’s caddy! And get run over by Lamont Jordan! Oh to be a Jets fan, just get the Cyanide out already! I know it’s only two games, but it’s the J-E-T-S!

And as far as the term Clubhouse Cancer goes, let’s revise that for the people who might be offended, to Clubhouse Poison, or Clubhouse anti-socialite, or my favorite Clubhouse non-conformist.

As for Carl Pavano, he may not ahve any guts, but he’s got a pair of brass balls to say the least.

Of course the Pats will keep winning, they only lost Brady not their videographer ;)

    Brady = Over-rated!!!

    and now everyone knows!

    Best player in the league?

    Bwhahahahahah!
