how more chances does Moose have to get 20 wins?

  2. DvAB

so the Yankees are going to a 6 man rotation and the Moose now has NO chance at 20 wins….NICE JOB, SPANKEES !

  3. Briantrust

Moose has about three more starts. It’s not looking good. I think he’ll wind up 18-10.

  4. bfadds

Peter, does this line Andy Pettitte up to close out the Stadium? Has this been talked about at all?

  5. Fredo Corleone

He could have three if they are willing to skip somebody next week. He’ll pitch on the 18th. That’s followed by a three game set with the O’s and an offday on the 22nd. He could pitch the 23rd in Toronto and then again on the last game of the season in Boston on the 28th.

  6. sunny615

If he sat at 19 wins – would the bump Pettitte to give Moose that chance?

  7. pat

Girardi said it lines Andy up for the last night in the Stadium and Moose for the last game of the season in Boston.

What I find funny about the whole Cano thing is that the Yankees, for years, wouldn’t negotiate contracts with their young players, and when they finally did and signed Cano, he spit in their eye.

    Braintrust,
Cashman had a deal with Derek while Jeter was still arbitration eligible and Steinbrennr nixed it. Cashman also tried to negotiate a deal with Posada and I think Bernie but he couldnt come up with an agreement.

If you search articles from last year when Canon first signed it last year they mention Cashman trying to reach deal with those players.

Moose has 3 more starts and he has to win them all to get 20. PLain and simple.

  11. bfadds

Pat, has this been written about in the paper, or is it just talk at this point? Because if the Yanks truly are going to a 6 man rotation… Andy would not make that final start at the Stadium… any more info on this?

There is no six man rotation… Hughes is in, Ponson is out.

Going further back the Yankees did sign Righetti early… lotsa people ripped them, but it was a good deal. Also Joe Malloy signed Tino to an extension once he traded for him to keep him away from free agency… another good deal.

I remember the Jeter situation… ended up costing the Yanks $ 40 Million or more as I recall

If Wang is healthy and productive in ‘09 he’ll be next

  13. Fredo Corleone

“There is no six man rotation… Hughes is in, Ponson is out.”

And Hughes will be skipped to facilitate Mussina 9/23 start in Toronto. More like a 4.5 man rotation down the stretch. Of course, if Mussina doesn’t get the win on Thursday, maybe they’ll let Hughes pitch on 9/23 since 20 wins would be out of reach.

  14. 86w183

They should let Hughes pitch no matter what Mussina does.

If Mussina wanted 20 wins he shouldn’t have pitched to a 5.70 ERA his last 5 starts. I hate manipulating things for individual goals generally, but more so when you trade a chance for further developing your best pitching prospect so a soon to be 40 year old FA can get a 34th start.

  15. RER - 98

If or when Mussina ever gets to the HOF will not hinge on whether he ever won 20 games or not.
His biggest selling point will be that he pitched his entire career in the AL East which was the toughest division to pitch in of his time. Few pitchers of this era can say the same given the way free agency works.
The voting writers would certainly take that in full consideration.

  16. 86w183

They should consider that. They should also consider that he was remarkably consistent, winning 11 + games for 17 consecutive seasons. He has 2800 strikeouts and he’s 114 games under the .500 mark. All that plus five Gold Gloves should earn him serious considration, but I suspect he won’t make it to Cooperstown.

I hope he retires on a high note. I think his trapeze act will not be pretty in 2009.
