This has to be some kind of sign

gehrigcu.jpgThe baseball gods work in mysterious ways, my friends.

Derek Jeter has 8,001 at-bats in his career. Lou Gehrig finished his career with … wait for it … 8,001 at-bats. It would have been fitting had Jeter singled in his last at-bat last night.

Bet he does it in the first inning tonight. Get those cameras ready.

(Thanks to Alex Belth, who tipped me off about this.)

It was just announced that the Sox sign Theo Epstein to a new contract.

Will be interesting what happens with Cashman this offseason.

Obviously – they’ll have to put an * next to Jete’s name when he becomes leader.

    Peter what do you say to this ;
The yankees should sign Bernie for the last home game at yankee stadium and he should lead off the game(like billy crystal did) i think it ould be nice.

  4. saucY

i was finally able to get some tickets to a game this year. went last night, thanks to my cousin, hoping to see Jeter make history. too bad i didn’t.

but it was a good game to see and most likely my last trip to that place. i took a ton of pictures of things i normally wouldn’t, like walking down the ramps as i was leaving the stadium…

the billy crystal thing was a travesty

“the billy crystal thing was a travesty”

    His films aren’t that bad.

But Bernie made a point to say he isnt retired!

“But Bernie made a point to say he isnt retired!”

He should join the Jets then.

  10. trisha - amazing what one win will do for an optimist!

Geeze and wow. Just wow. No baseball gods or ghosts at the Stadium? Think again!

  11. pat

Ozzie has advice for Yankee fans:

“Tell the people not to bring cameras to the stadium. Jeter can’t see the ball.”

hey hey cool down! He is Bernie Williams. the most beloved yank in this century more then mo ,more than jeter, more than O’Neill and of course more than A-rod! lets give him his respect he deserves!

  13. GreenBeret7

Yes, but, how many more at bats has Jeter had in “The Big Ball Orchard In The Bronx”? About 250 at bats? Not the true record, then.

Before people start yammering about it…it was a joke.

    ************************************************
And of what significance is this supposed to be on a Yankee board ?

  15. Joe from Long Island

    8,001 ABs – and they’re tied.

    Amazing.

Pete, you’re right, it would be something if Derek got a hit in his first AB tonight. Poetic, ironic, dramatic, fitting…It would be something.

  16. Bronx Jeers

    Jeter with an * ? I won’t bother asking.

Bernie with an AB in the last game. That would be really special.

    #9 = #2

  17. GreenBeret7

take your meds, Neil. Ray’s a regular poster who contributes greatly to this board…on both sides of the rivalry.

  18. Art_vanedlay

What poetic is that in the first yr w/o Clueless Joe, we fail to make the playoffs. Poetic justice that is. The only worse way it could have gone down is if either LA wins the Series, or if Clueless Joe got the Mets job and took them into the playoffs.

  19. Bronx Jeers

Actually the Theo signing is pretty significant. Even on a “Yankee board”.

  20. Fredo Corleone

    Neil:

As the Red Sox will likely be in the AL East with the Yankees for years to come, knowing what going on with them has it’s merits. You can bet Ray and other astute Boston fans keep an eye on what the Yankees are doing as an organization.

  21. #9

Bronx Jeers’ sarcasm meter is broke, folks!

  22. rover

    8,001 each, eeery eeery eeery.

  23. ray (sox fan)

    Neil,
I would just echo what some other people have already said. The Yankees/Sox rivalry is considered the biggest in all of sports.

What one team does in terms of management and players directly influences what the other team does!

  24. S.o.S.27

“But Bernie made a point to say he isnt retired!”

So did Bonds. Conceco,Bernie,Sosa,Bonds,Palmiero(players who didnt want to retire)should get together and make a beer league softball team.

  25. S.o.S.27

    “8,001″

They should give Jete the rest of the year off. Leave the Stadium tied with Lou in hits and at bats.

  26. trisha - amazing what one win will do for an optimist!

I too have to admit (surprise surprise) that I find nothing significant or interesting about who the Sux sign. It is hardly a big surprise that Epstein got re-signed. And in terms of “what happens to Cashman in the off season” it’s old news that the Steinbrenners want him back. I guess people can replay their thoughts on what Cashman will do, though that is already been hashed and rehashed. I’m with Neil.

    Re: Epstein – so what.

  27. trisha - amazing what one win will do for an optimist!

And the lead-in to this had to do with the iron horse and DJ. I would have loved to see the first post and those following be responsive to Pete’s lead-in and not some news about the Sux.

    Just my opinion.

  28. Brian

Wow. Looking at Gehrig there, I never thought Jeter kinda looks like him. Maybe Gehrig came back as Jeter to resume a highly similar career at the back end of the century….and to get a lotta poontang

  29. ray (sox fan)

So tell me Trisha. I know it is not likely to happen but if on November 1, 2008 the Sox signed CC Sabathia you would not find that significant or interesting???

  30. trisha - BRING BOBBY BACK!

Yeah that would be. Singing Epstein isn’t.

  31. 56Bomber

I don’t get the “eerieness”. Both Gehrig and Jeter have 8001 ABs but Gehrig has 2721 hits and Jeter only 2530. Its not like they have the same number of ABs at Yankee Stadium.
    Whatever.

  32. Paul

Pete — Here’s another one. The top three places in the Yankee hit list are occupied by numbers 2, 3, and 4! Cheers. Paul.
