Who cares who has the most hits at whatever stadium ? Phony late-season drama for a team that’s going nowhere. I guess individual stats are all that matters now.

Savor what we can. This is a remarkable accomplishment and I for one coudn’t be happier it was broken by our captain and the man who had consistently been there day-in-day-out.

    God Bless Jeter.

    Underrated, not overrated.

From Curry on the Times blog:

Two days before Yankees Manager Joe Girardi pulled Robinson Cano from a game for not hustling after a deflected grounder, I asked Derek Jeter how much blame Girardi deserved for Cano’s regression as a player.

Jeter said that managers get blamed for too much and that a player has to be accountable for his own play. Without mentioning Cano by name, I think Jeter was referring to Cano. At some point, Cano is responsible for what Cano does.

When I asked Girardi if he or any of his coaches had gotten in Cano’s face, as former third base coach Larry Bowa said he did, Girardi said they had done a lot of things to try to motivate Cano. Since Jeter is the Yankees’ captain, he should be expected to try to motivate Cano, too.

While Jeter is too guarded to say if he had confronted Cano, he gave an interesting answer about how he is perceived. Jeter has a reputation for being a leader by example and for not being especially vocal.
“I always hear the same thing about myself, ‘He doesn’t get in somebody’s face,’” Jeter said. “Well, how do they know? How does anybody know? Unless I was to tell someone or unless he was to tell someone, nobody is going to know. And you don’t do things for the camera.”

So if Jeter did verbally challenge a teammate?

“I ain’t going to tell you about it,” Jeter said. “And if I yelled at someone, you think the person I yelled at is going to tell you? It’s always baffling because people think they have this perception of how someone is. I don’t do things for the camera. There are people like that.”

Underrated but also somewhat passive/aggressive with that last line.

If jetes would yell at the press, I for one would feel better. After all these years just what does anyone expect him to say? Jeter being Jeter, and I for one am glad he does that routine here.

    That quote was pretty gangsta

Andrew Marchand reported being the first one in the clubhouse several weeks ago and seeing Jeter having a “extremely animated” conversation with Cano which ended the minute the reporters came in.

You can bet he’s been in Cano’s face. But like he said, he doesn’t life his life for the cameras.

    Good for him.

By the way, Marchand did mention that it sounded like Jeter was giving him a talking to.

And I meant to type “live his life” earlier.

It’s late here where I live.

It amazes me how people continue to attack Jeter.
