Moose ties Palmer with 268 victories

For Mike Mussina, tonight was his 268th career win. That ties Hall of Famer Jim Palmer for 33rd place in history.

Moose also has 121 wins as a Yankee. He moved past Vic Raschi for sole possession of 12th place on the club’s all-time list.

Laura and Trish there might be a pic in there of interest to the both of you.

He just said on the postgame that he wants to keep pitching.

  3. Nick in SF September 18th, 2008 at 11:15 pm

This has been a kind of sentimental night, Moose’s last start at the Stadium… and maybe last home start as a Yankee? Wow, I hope not. I was really excited all those years ago when Moose was willing to take more money to come to New York… this is no way for it to end.

  4. Y26 September 18th, 2008 at 11:17 pm

If Manual gets fired this season, I would grab him and fire Girardi in a heartbeat. Manual is just the type of manager the tema needs— he can command a clubhouse, handles the media well, and the players love him. He could be the next Torre.

Do not fool around if he is fired by the Mets. Grab him and fire Girardi.

Moose has had a season he should remember forever.

  6. Al from BK(Joba supporter.) September 18th, 2008 at 11:19 pm

    Translation of Moose post-game comments:

“I want to come back, if the Yanks will have me.”

  7. sw September 18th, 2008 at 11:19 pm

It must be kind of surreal for Moose. When he was coming up as a kid in the Orioles organization a lot of people compared him to Palmer and now all these years later he’s tied Palmer in wins.

  8. Rebecca--Optimist Prime September 18th, 2008 at 11:19 pm

    Christ guys, even Willie got more than a year before he was fired O_O;

  9. mel September 18th, 2008 at 11:20 pm

Congrats to Moose. Comeback Player of the Year?

Good to hear he wants to come back. Hopefully it’ll be in pinstripes. The Yankees will want to be all over that just like the HR chase. :)

32 wins is definitely doable. 2 more this year. Average of 15 over the next 2 years.

  10. Rebecca--Optimist Prime September 18th, 2008 at 11:22 pm

    mel: Two words–Cliff Lee.

But Moose has to be in consideration.

  11. Jorge Tabata September 18th, 2008 at 11:22 pm

Give G.I. Joe a rotation with Sabathia-Burnett-Mussina-Wang-Joba, a pen with Rivera-Marte-Sanchez-Melancon-Bruney-Coke, and an offense with some more role players and a thumper like Manny or Tex and then lets see what kind of manager Girardi is.

    Improvements need to be made.

I would trade Kennedy and Cervelli for Neftali Feliz

    That’s nice they wouldn’t.

They didn’t even interview Sanchez… pathetic.

He’s a latino that can actually speak english and is from the Bronx.

    Wilson,

Nardi compared Coke as a starter to Jeff Fassero.

That’s before he had that slider and Nardi has never seen him touch 96 mph this yr., he must be shocked more than anyone.

  13. Joey's Poodle September 18th, 2008 at 11:24 pm

Whether he makes his 20 or not, it’s great that Moose won his last start at the Stadium, won it convincingly, and got such warm appreciation from the fans.

As Leiter mentioned, it’s a pleasure to watch the chess game every time Mussina pitches. I’ve enjoyed so many of his games — I’m glad he got to enjoy this one.

  14. Brandon (Humberto's coming home !)..."Reward Colin Curtis's .414 postseason AVG " September 18th, 2008 at 11:25 pm

    More paycheck players, cool.

  15. mel September 18th, 2008 at 11:26 pm

    Rebecca,

Lee will get the Cy Young.

And Frankie deserves nothing. He inherited 3 runners today and let them all score. And still got the save. Harumph.

There’s big talk about Manny maybe getting the NL MVP by default.

  16. Andrea September 18th, 2008 at 11:27 pm

I think Manuel is pretty bland with the media. he has no presence.

There’s big talk about Manny maybe getting the NL MVP by default.

that’s crazy talk. if that;s the case, forget about Lincecum winning his first ever CY Young and give it to CC.

  18. mel September 18th, 2008 at 11:31 pm

People are too hypercritical of Girardi and whether you like it or not, he’s back next season. Please whine about something else. Thank you!

People are too hypercritical of Girardi and whether you like it or not, he’s back next season. Please whine about something else. Thank you!

Mel, please post this again to “Girardi, say bye bye.” As for me, I wanted Girardi since DAY ONE when he was being considered for the position, and still not regretting it.

  20. Rebecca--Optimist Prime September 18th, 2008 at 11:35 pm

    mel: WOW.

What about Aramis Ramirez? Kosuke Fukudome? Anyone else wearing a bleedin’ Cubs uni?

  21. mel September 18th, 2008 at 11:39 pm

    Rebecca,

His name is out there. He’s hot (although he’s no X). He’s carrying the team. Pujols is on a bad team. Howard has a low BA & struck out over 200x. Delgado has cooled off.

The Cubs may suffer from what the Yankees have in the past. Too many good players.

  22. GreenBeret7 September 18th, 2008 at 11:40 pm

For all of you counting Pettitte out, bet on him returning (less money for one year). He’ll be healthy and let him, Mussina, Hughes and Chamberlain split the 3-4-5 slots. Hughes and Chamberlain will still be on restricted innings and Mussina and Pettitte would benefit from the extra rest. They could also go an inning between starts a few times.

  23. PUDGE, THE 08 CURSE September 18th, 2008 at 11:41 pm

    GREAT YEAR MOOSE

now either retire or go pitch elsewhere…yanks need to move on

    same for pettitte

  24. Rebecca--Optimist Prime September 18th, 2008 at 11:42 pm

GB: I’m not sure the risk of bringing both back is worth it.

  25. Al from BK(Joba supporter.) September 18th, 2008 at 11:44 pm

I’ve been on Girardi a lot, however neither Casey Stengel, Connie Mack or Joe Torre for that matter could have easily navigated this team into the playoffs. This team was a decent team at the start of the year but the avalanche of injuries brought them down to mediocre and unfortunately they have not overcome. There is a lot to look forward to in 09. The biggest of which is the bullpen. Look forward to guys like Sanchez, Coke and Melancon making a big splash in the pen. This pitching staff is flushed with the most young talent since I can remember. Potential guys knocking on the door next year could include Dellin Betances and Austin Jackson and coming off of TJ Andrew Brackman, who for those who hasn’t seen him makes Humberto Sanchez look small. A lot to look forward to despite missing the playoffs, this all can’t be on Joe.

  26. Bob(The Original) September 18th, 2008 at 11:44 pm

I’ll be shocked if Moose isn’t back here next season. Can’t expect him to repeat this season, but you need a smart veteran on the staff with all these youngsters around.

And I’d much rather see them bring Moose back than Pettitte.

That’s gonna get the allergies kicking in though on Sunday. Seeing Pettitte leave the Stadium mound for likely the last time.

  27. Nick in SF September 18th, 2008 at 11:45 pm

Moose is the Please Come Back! Player of the Year.

  28. mel September 18th, 2008 at 11:46 pm

I agree GB. Right now, we have Wang. And Wang. But he can only fill one slot.

If you don’t bring back Andy and/or Mike you’ve got to go out and fill those slots with bad contracts.

And is the Ben Sheets bandwagon in the shop?

And are we glad to see OC leave town? Thank goodness he’s the only one who came to play.

  29. Rebecca--Optimist Prime September 18th, 2008 at 11:47 pm

I’m not dissing Pettitte at all, but I am not sure you guys will need him next year.

I am not convinced that CC Sabathia will not end up with the Yankees, and I know some folks on this blog are urging that Burnett be signed as well as CC.

I would guess that the Yankees bring back Mussina for at least a year, but probably not Pettitte. Just my opinion which obviously could be wrong.

    ray,

2 for us, 1 for you. You can have Sheets.

Did you hear Joey Porter lipping off?

  39. GreenBeret7 September 18th, 2008 at 11:55 pm

Mel, you’re right and it’s no guarantee that NYY could sign Sabathia or Burnett, and, pitchers like Sheets (arm issues) Lowe, Loeshe or Livan Hernandez don’t hold any appeal for me. Pettitte pitched very well until August, and something wasn’t right. Even then, he had a string of games where he pitched well and got zero support. He says he wants to pitch one more year and then shut it down. I think that like Mussina, he still has a lot to offer and the four I mentioned would each get 26 starts. That would just about set Hughes and Chamberlain up for a full season in 2010.

  40. Bob(The Original) September 18th, 2008 at 11:55 pm

I agree with you Rebecca. Even though I went to my last game the other night and said my goodbyes to the old place, it wasn’t really until watching Moose walk off the mound tonight that it really set in that it’s just about it.

If you guys get both CC and Burnett I think it will be a very long year for the rest of us next season!!

I did see where Joey Porter was talking some trash. If I was a coach I would really be upset for my players to talk trash before the game starts..

I know these guys are all professionals and don’t need extra motivation, but I really do think the bulletin board material does give some extra motivation.

  49. Al from BK(Joba supporter.) September 19th, 2008 at 12:02 am

Ray- Good points. I have this feeling CC is gonna go to a west coast team, Burnett actually could happen. I agree completely Moose needs to come back, he proved he can still pitch.

  50. Christina September 19th, 2008 at 12:04 am

ah ralph branca and bobby thompson. so do you think the telescopes helped them?

  51. Nick in SF September 19th, 2008 at 12:07 am

Christina, I suspect they did. Poor Brooklyn.

  52. GreenBeret7 September 19th, 2008 at 12:08 am

There’s no reason to believe that Pettitte can’t make the same sort of adjustments in pitching philosophies that Mussina made. Pettitte knows pitching as well as anybody in baseball. With Mussina, Pettitte, Hughes and Chamberlain getting 26 starts each and a few relief appearances each on throw days, they could really give the team a boost and keep them healthy and fresh.

  53. mel September 19th, 2008 at 12:09 am

    ray,

lol. You’d think they would’ve learned from what the team did to trash talkers last year.

I have a soft spot for the ‘fins. I’m rooting for their center and a rookie FA receiver.

  54. ray (sox fan) September 19th, 2008 at 12:12 am

I just think that from the messages that Hank Steinbrenner has sent out the last month or so, the Yankees are prepared to add some top shelf pitchers to the rotation. He has been saying the Yankees will do whatever they have to do to be the best next year.

Whether it is CC, Burnett, or someone else I am not sure, but I will be very surprised if some quality starting pitcher is not added and then I do wonder if Pettitte is needed.

  55. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en...hopefully sometime soon! September 19th, 2008 at 12:13 am

Moose might have a decent shot at catching Randy Johnson as the closest active pitcher to 300 if he wants to keep pitching. I say that jokingly, but that D-Backs bullpen has REALLY been costing the Big Unit for the last month or two.

  56. Nick in SF September 19th, 2008 at 12:13 am

I would like both Moose and Pettitte back. With those two slotted as our 3 and 4 or (4 and 5) with CC (please please) and Wang as 1 and 2 and Joba/Hughes/never-Ponson-or-Rasner-again-please, I think we have a formidable rotation.

SF Giants are really flirting with danger the way they’re pitching Lincecum. 390+ pitches 3 the last three games. If he doesn’t get hurt in the next two years, I’ll be shocked. He has that same violent motion that Smoltz has, and he had issues a few times after about 4 full years.

ray, that reminds me, shouldn’t Jeffrey Maier pull the lever for one of the Orioles games?

that would be a gut kick to the O’s but then again, the O’s wanted to draft him despite what happened 12 years ago.

  66. ray (sox fan) September 19th, 2008 at 12:25 am

That would be a riot Nick.

  68. ray (sox fan) September 19th, 2008 at 12:28 am

Nick, I heard that in that last Yankees/Sox series at the stadium Giambi was asking for Mike Timlin to pull the lever!

  69. GreenBeret7 September 19th, 2008 at 12:30 am

Ray, I agree that NYY will go hard after Burnett and or Sabathia, but, not likely both of them, and with both Hughes and Chamberlain being on limited innings, they’ll need two more starters to cover the innings, and that doesn’t take into account any injuries that will surely come.

Those four can make the 3/5ths of the remaining starts, get the kids their innings (hopefully) and keep both Mussina and Pettitte strong and fresh down the stretch. That’s what I’m looking at, anyway. Pettitte only wants the one more year and close it down and it gives he and Mussina better chances to win their 15 games because he’s stronger all season. Most good starters on a normal year will win half of their starts better pitchers a little more.

  70. Nick in SF September 19th, 2008 at 12:31 am

I would have gone with Bucky Dent, but Timlim would have been a good choice too.

  71. mel September 19th, 2008 at 12:31 am

Nice, ray. We’re going to bench Giambi and bring him in when Timlin’s in the game.

  72. Ed - strange things happens in baseball [good things happens when it's the full moon the Yanks] September 19th, 2008 at 12:32 am

to correct my mistake of the O’s wanting to drafted him back in 2006:

Baltimore had a chance to turn its draft surreal on Wednesday by drafting Jeffrey Maier, an outfielder out of Wesleyan University. Joe Jordan, Baltimore’s scouting director laughed and flatly denied that the Orioles had any interest in drafting Maier on Wednesday. They had enough things on their plate without playing into legend and lore, he said.

It’s nice knowing you have options like Aceves and Coke, if they’re forced to convert him to being a starter.

What’s Brackman’s schedule? He’s on the 40, so it’d be nice for him to, uh, actually start pitching!

I wonder how much of a riot would it cost if the Yanks decided to bring Dent to Boston with them? seeing how he crushed the Sox’s dream of going to the playoffs 30 years ago. The elimination game was played on 10/2. Yanks vs Red Sox in the final season series, such a good timing.

  85. mel September 19th, 2008 at 12:44 am

    GB7,

    Thanks.

I was going to come back with a Russian mail-order bride joke, but that might be getting a little personal.

Wonder what the Yanks are doing this year. It’ll be hard to top the Oz characters from last season.

Saw the Dodgers bullpen rookies. They all have Dora backpacks. Don’t know if that’s hazing or what. How did the pink backpack start here? Sanchez must have it now. Hope they filled it up with rice cakes. Bruney needs to have a talk with Oberto.

  86. pat September 19th, 2008 at 12:45 am

Yankee rookie hazing this year may not get good press. Should be Sunday night but with Monday being an off day, they might not leave for Toronto until Monday afternoon so no fans and press will be around the stadium.

“Dent”>>>>>>>>>truly a four letter word! lol

  89. GreenBeret7 September 19th, 2008 at 12:47 am

Yeah, Ray, I know, but with the restricted innings, they’ll still need 6 starters at least. For instance – Sabathia – 33 starts; Wang – 33 starts; and then Hughes, Chamberlain, Mussina 24 starts each. Then they could fill out the bullpen with an inning here and there. The 6 starters will be necessary, one way or another. Of course there will be missed starts because of injuries.

  90. GreenBeret7 September 19th, 2008 at 12:49 am

You’re correct, Mel. Having Coke and Aceves in long relief/ spot starts, and for Coke the tough lefty matchups will be nice.

  91. Ed - strange things happens in baseball [good things happens when it's the full moon the Yanks] September 19th, 2008 at 12:50 am

Rebecca, it would definitly mean more if the Yanks do go on a massive winning streak and putting pressure on the Sox from now to next week. 8)

  92. pat September 19th, 2008 at 12:50 am

I saw the Sox hazing pictures. High School Musical theme and whoever came up with the costumes must have a large breasted cheerleader fantasy because the size of the “implants” was definitely not reality.

They’ll have to do it Sunday, no? The only reason why they wouldn’t is because it’s a night game and everyone would be emotionally drained.

Mel, great find on why Sanchez chose #77. I actually thought he pulled a “Reggie Willits”, a fan of Mantle but #7 was either retired or taken. so i’m guessing he’s a fan of the ’77 season? who knows.

Girardi hinted that he would welcome Williams as an instructor in spring training. “I would love to have Bernie around whenever we can have him,” Girardi said. “I’m extremely thrilled that he’s going to be here.”

  129. mel September 19th, 2008 at 2:03 am

Steve Phillips on how to fix the Yankees @ espn.com. Forget Tex, grab CC & AJ.

Gotta admit his rotation of Sabathia, Chien-Ming Wang, Chamberlain, Burnett and Phil Hughes would look mighty nice.

  130. Pepitone September 19th, 2008 at 2:07 am

    “Sabathia-Burnett-Mussina-Wang-Joba”

FYI, Neither Sabathia or Burnett is coming to the Bronx next year so get over it! Sabathia does not want to play here, so stop worrying about it, and Burnett is an injury waiting to happen – no more Pavanos!!!

Here’s next years rotation: Wang – Chamberlain – Hughes – Pettitte – Mussina

No Tex either, I live in L.A. and the Angels want him back.

Yankees have been burned with this free agent crap, they won’t be making the same mistakes again.

  131. Pepitone September 19th, 2008 at 2:09 am

    Oh, and one other thing…

Steve Phillips knows squat about how to fix the Yankees. Why do you think he’s still with ESPN? He’s a washed up GM who adds nothing to the broadcasts except someone to make fun of.

  133. Pepitone September 19th, 2008 at 2:14 am

“Oh, please! Are you kidding me? Money talks, pep.”

No, actually, I’m not kidding you. The guy does not want to play baseball in New York! What part of the English language do you have trouble understanding?

Money talks? We’ll see. By the way, do you want to pay this guy a contract worth around 200 million for probably 10 years?

If you think the Yankees will do that after what they’ve been through with Pavano, you’re nuts.

  134. mel September 19th, 2008 at 2:14 am

    Pep,

AJ’s a better bet than CC. I really think that CC will stay in the NL. Dodgers. Hughes and Joba have innings issues.

    I say:

    Wang
    AJ
    Joba
    Moose
    Pettitte

Hughes to take the 5th spot when Joba reaches his innings. The Yankees are still deciding, but Joba’s meeting with them on Monday, and I think he’ll convince them to make him a starter from the spring. He doesn’t mind doing it, but you can tell from his comments he’s tired of fooling around already.

I feel bad for Sheets, but I’m glad that it’ll keep us out of the Sheets-stakes.

  135. mel September 19th, 2008 at 2:18 am

    *it would be relieving.

  136. Pepitone September 19th, 2008 at 2:23 am

    Mel,

I agree, Burnett’s more likely to come here, but I don’t like the injury factor. The Yanks got burned bad with Pavano, I’m not sure they want to take another chance on an injury plagued arm.

The Yankee brass are going to have to get off their ass and do their jobs this offseason. Trades that address their weaknesses are a better avenue than free agency, but that means they’re going to have to do a little homework, something they haven’t been good at lately.

  137. mel September 19th, 2008 at 2:27 am

    Pepitone,

AJ will be worth the risk. Watch, he’ll become your favorite Yankee!

And there will never, ever be another Carl Pavano. Impossible. Lowest denominator. Negative.

  138. Pepitone September 19th, 2008 at 2:31 am

    Mel,

I’m not sold on him, but we’ll see.

  139. Ed - strange things happens in baseball [good things happens when it's the full moon the Yanks] September 19th, 2008 at 2:35 am

speaking of risking a shot, I would go after Rocco Baldelli as the 4th outsider or to replace Matsui as the DH if his knees doesn’t hold up.

  140. Only umps on the take hate instant replay. September 19th, 2008 at 2:39 am

    Pep, you don’t get it.

    I’ll have C.C. Sabathia narrate:

I’m the biggest free-agent on the market next season. The team that desperately needs an Ace in the rotation just so happens to have the highest payroll. I think I’ll just put it out there that I want to play in the National League, all the way on the West Coast. Which just so happens to describe the exact opposite of where the Yankees are and what division they happen to be in.

I couldn’t possibly be saying these things to place my self in a position of power in any future negotiations during the off-season. Hmmmm… nope. Couldn’t be.

    ;)

  141. kasey September 19th, 2008 at 3:26 am

wait, you mean to tell me steve phillips thinks an ace and a very good pitcher would help the yankees next season? what a revelation!

good for moose. i hope he gets 20.

  142. 86w183 September 19th, 2008 at 9:16 am

It’s stunning to me how many close personal friends of CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett and Mark Teixiera post on this blog.

Some of you act like Pavano is a typical FA experience for the Yankees. He’s not at all. The idea that the Yankees wont be players in the FA market this offseason is completely uninformed. Whether they are successful, no one other than Pepitone knows.

The decisions on Pettite and Mussina will determine whether the Yankees pursue one or two FA starting pitchers. I’d say with what is happening to the Brewers right now the Yankees greatgest selling point for CC is the bullpen.

  143. rover September 19th, 2008 at 10:07 am

Go Moose, truly a pitchers pitcher. The King of reinvention. If he wants I give him a shot next year. He could pitch this way for another 3 or more years. Smart dude that Mussina.

  144. Pepitone September 19th, 2008 at 12:33 pm

“It’s stunning to me how many close personal friends of CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett and Mark Teixiera post on this blog.”

Yeah, and 86w183 is close personal friends with Hank and Hal Steinbrenner. You know as much about this as the rest of us so shove it up your ass.

I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to see that the Yankees have been burned with recent free agent signings, and will be very very cautious about who they spend their money for, and how much they’re willing to spend.

Oh, and one other thing, SABATHIA IS NOT COMING TO NEW YORK TO PLAY FOR THE YANKEES! GET OVER IT! If he comes to New York, it will be to play in the NL for the Mets. You think he wants to come back here and pitch to the DH, and all the boppers that are here in the AL? You need a good psychiatrist.
