Jeter: “I’m playing tomorrow”

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Sep 20, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

X-rays were negative on Derek Jeter’s left hand. In what for him was unusual, he admitted that it hurts. But Jeter said he would be playing tomorrow night. He left the Stadium with his hand wrapped in a compression bandage to keep the swelling down.

Jeter was hit on roughly the same spot he was on May 20 by Daniel Cabrera. Some believe he may have broken a bone and kept playing but that has never been confirmed.

Super but he better DH and the rest of the lineup needs to carry thierselves.

I never considered that the Captain wouldn’t be in tomorrow’s lineup; the admission that it hurts is big, but #2′s sense of tomorrow’s historical significance is bigger.

Can Matsui play an inning or 2 in the OF? Figure their plan was to DH him tomorrow.

Won’t seem right if Jeter isn’t at SS in the last game though. Can’t see him not toughing it out to play there.

  5. E-Rod September 20th, 2008 at 4:53 pm

    Brandon

And imagine CC, Fielder, Diet Coke Bandit AND Kay on the same plane?

  6. Erik September 20th, 2008 at 4:56 pm

    God Bless Derek Jeter!

    2009 lineup

    Damon LF
    Jeter SS
    Matsui DH
    Rodriguez 3B
    Posada C
    Cano 2B
    Nady RF
    Miranda 1B
    Gardner CF

  8. pat September 20th, 2008 at 4:56 pm

Left hand is his glove hand so I’m guessing he’ll be at SS.

  9. Rodney F. September 20th, 2008 at 4:56 pm

That’s releaving, I just got back from the game. A great last memory in the stadium.

  10. Brandon (Humberto's coming home !)..."Keep Manny away !" September 20th, 2008 at 4:56 pm

Erod I wouldn’t wish that on CC

Yeah, he should DH. I can’t believe he admitted it hurts…I hope he can still hit! I kinda was counting on at least one of those typical Jeter single up the middle that we’ve all come to love so much!

Meantime Yankee pitching needs to drill a couple O’s in the skull next year. Seems it may be the only way their pitchers will EVER learn to be more careful.

    “God Bless Derek Jeter!”

    I’ll drink to that!

I just hope we can score off Charles Walters— a 28 yr old lefty journeyman.

  14. Tom September 20th, 2008 at 5:00 pm

I’m beginning to think Abreu needs to come back next year. At worst he’d be a Brian Giles type player. Move Nady to first were he has played 81 games throughout his career.

“a 28 yr old lefty journeyman”

    AKA Yankee Kryptonite.

  16. mel September 20th, 2008 at 5:01 pm

Thank goodness he got his hits early. Smart guy. You never know what’s going to happen.

    absolutely–

i’m still pretty shaken up about this.

Can Chris Carlin join that plane ride too with Sabathia, Francessa, Fielder, and Kay?

  19. Shane September 20th, 2008 at 5:04 pm

Something just occurred to me. Is tomorrow’s big surprise that Bernie will be suited up and start in center? One inning, one AB, huge cheers… all would be well.

Can Chris Carlin join that plane ride too with Sabathia, Francessa, Fielder, and Kay?

That’s a scary bunch of individuals on one plane

  21. bubba September 20th, 2008 at 5:12 pm

what about Abreu to first? Nady might be a better OF–at least at going back toward the wall.

  22. Tom September 20th, 2008 at 5:24 pm

If Abreu is open to playing first that wouldn’t be such a bad idea. I only chose Nady because he has played there before.

  23. PeterS September 20th, 2008 at 5:35 pm

why do people think first is so easy to play… amazing learn and watch baseball….

  24. rover September 20th, 2008 at 6:51 pm

Yeah, when you get old we just move you to first, you don’t have to do anything there but look good. Nothing to learn, I mean just play pitch and catch. Man it just is not that easy. If abreu can play first he can play third. Think he can play third. You got to have the same type skills, plus a couple that are different.

  25. bigjf September 20th, 2008 at 7:11 pm

Jeter could lose the hand and still be standing there at SS tomorrow night. If he doesn’t play another game this season, he plays SS tomorrow night and no one can say otherwise.

  26. terpbomber September 20th, 2008 at 7:32 pm

Steve Somers on WFAN was his typical asinine self earlier. In mock sympathy, he said words to the effect that it would be a shame that Jeter would be denied playing the final game at Yankee Stadium tomorrow night. It didn’t help that at the time he made those comments, a fellow Mets fan called in wished him a “Happy Elimination Day.” The caller seemed hopeful that today’s, if not tomorrow’s, game was the one that put the Yankees out of the playoffs for good.

  27. bubba September 20th, 2008 at 7:49 pm

you think Giambi can play 3rd? He’s been the first baseman for most of the year. Teixeira would be the best solution, but Nady, Abreu or even Jorge would be upgrades.

  28. corsari September 21st, 2008 at 1:29 am

Even if Jeter breaks every bone in his body today, he’ll still be the starting shortstop. He’d say “he’s fine” anyway.

  29. No September 21st, 2008 at 2:55 am

I would love to get a hold of Jeter’s X-rays and give them to an independent radiologist and have them tell me exactly how many times he’s broken bones in his hand, and how recently. I bet they can discern all that. And I bet he’s played with fractures.

  30. On the road September 21st, 2008 at 12:09 pm

I am hoping the surprise is retiring Bernie William’s Number.

  31. Jodi September 27th, 2008 at 11:06 pm

What is with this guy Daniel Cabrera? This year he hit Jeter twice on the same hand, taking him out the game twice and making him miss games, and he hits A-Rod as well! Can’t we do something about that? Is he going to take out the entire Yankee lineup next season?

    Beware of Cabrera!
