Jeter: “I’m playing tomorrow”

Peter Abraham
September
20

X-rays were negative on Derek Jeter’s left hand. In what for him was unusual, he admitted that it hurts. But Jeter said he would be playing tomorrow night. He left the Stadium with his hand wrapped in a compression bandage to keep the swelling down.

Jeter was hit on roughly the same spot he was on May 20 by Daniel Cabrera. Some believe he may have broken a bone and kept playing but that has never been confirmed.

Was this even necessasry to report?
    lol

  2. Brandon (Humberto's coming home !)..."Keep Manny away !"

Super but he better DH and the rest of the lineup needs to carry thierselves.

  3. 213 Area Code

I never considered that the Captain wouldn’t be in tomorrow’s lineup; the admission that it hurts is big, but #2’s sense of tomorrow’s historical significance is bigger.

  4. Bob(The Original)

Can Matsui play an inning or 2 in the OF? Figure their plan was to DH him tomorrow.

Won’t seem right if Jeter isn’t at SS in the last game though. Can’t see him not toughing it out to play there.

  5. E-Rod

    Brandon

And imagine CC, Fielder, Diet Coke Bandit AND Kay on the same plane?

  6. Erik

    God Bless Derek Jeter!

    2009 lineup

    Damon LF
    Jeter SS
    Matsui DH
    Rodriguez 3B
    Posada C
    Cano 2B
    Nady RF
    Miranda 1B
    Gardner CF

  8. pat

Left hand is his glove hand so I’m guessing he’ll be at SS.

  9. Rodney F.

That’s releaving, I just got back from the game. A great last memory in the stadium.

  10. Brandon (Humberto's coming home !)..."Keep Manny away !"

Erod I wouldn’t wish that on CC

  11. BBB

Yeah, he should DH. I can’t believe he admitted it hurts…I hope he can still hit! I kinda was counting on at least one of those typical Jeter single up the middle that we’ve all come to love so much!

Meantime Yankee pitching needs to drill a couple O’s in the skull next year. Seems it may be the only way their pitchers will EVER learn to be more careful.

  12. BBB

    “God Bless Derek Jeter!”

    I’ll drink to that!

  13. Dave D

I just hope we can score off Charles Walters— a 28 yr old lefty journeyman.

  14. Tom

I’m beginning to think Abreu needs to come back next year. At worst he’d be a Brian Giles type player. Move Nady to first were he has played 81 games throughout his career.

“a 28 yr old lefty journeyman”

    AKA Yankee Kryptonite.

  16. mel

Thank goodness he got his hits early. Smart guy. You never know what’s going to happen.

    absolutely–

i’m still pretty shaken up about this.

  18. Dave D

Can Chris Carlin join that plane ride too with Sabathia, Francessa, Fielder, and Kay?

  19. Shane

Something just occurred to me. Is tomorrow’s big surprise that Bernie will be suited up and start in center? One inning, one AB, huge cheers… all would be well.

Can Chris Carlin join that plane ride too with Sabathia, Francessa, Fielder, and Kay?

That’s a scary bunch of individuals on one plane

  21. bubba

what about Abreu to first? Nady might be a better OF–at least at going back toward the wall.

  22. Tom

If Abreu is open to playing first that wouldn’t be such a bad idea. I only chose Nady because he has played there before.

  23. PeterS

why do people think first is so easy to play… amazing learn and watch baseball….

  24. rover

Yeah, when you get old we just move you to first, you don’t have to do anything there but look good. Nothing to learn, I mean just play pitch and catch. Man it just is not that easy. If abreu can play first he can play third. Think he can play third. You got to have the same type skills, plus a couple that are different.

  25. bigjf

Jeter could lose the hand and still be standing there at SS tomorrow night. If he doesn’t play another game this season, he plays SS tomorrow night and no one can say otherwise.

  26. terpbomber

Steve Somers on WFAN was his typical asinine self earlier. In mock sympathy, he said words to the effect that it would be a shame that Jeter would be denied playing the final game at Yankee Stadium tomorrow night. It didn’t help that at the time he made those comments, a fellow Mets fan called in wished him a “Happy Elimination Day.” The caller seemed hopeful that today’s, if not tomorrow’s, game was the one that put the Yankees out of the playoffs for good.

  27. bubba

you think Giambi can play 3rd? He’s been the first baseman for most of the year. Teixeira would be the best solution, but Nady, Abreu or even Jorge would be upgrades.

  28. corsari

Even if Jeter breaks every bone in his body today, he’ll still be the starting shortstop. He’d say “he’s fine” anyway.

  29. No

I would love to get a hold of Jeter’s X-rays and give them to an independent radiologist and have them tell me exactly how many times he’s broken bones in his hand, and how recently. I bet they can discern all that. And I bet he’s played with fractures.

  30. On the road

I am hoping the surprise is retiring Bernie William’s Number.

  31. Jodi

What is with this guy Daniel Cabrera? This year he hit Jeter twice on the same hand, taking him out the game twice and making him miss games, and he hits A-Rod as well! Can’t we do something about that? Is he going to take out the entire Yankee lineup next season?

    Beware of Cabrera!
