The feelings following last night are really weird. I am upset but not depressed. I think Jeter really put it well that the memories will be carried over to next year. The pregame was cool with all the guys in the former players uniforms. I mean those are the ghosts and the stories that the Stadium is filled with. And then to see the teams of my youth (the 90′s) really be honored was great. I actually expected to cry but I never did, i was just happy and proud to see the display of history. The only parts I felt really emotional was when they chanted Jeter’s name, Bernie’s name, when Rivera came in for the last time, and the whole ending with the lap around the field. There is no other team in any other league who could put on a show like that.

And then to cap it off the whole team led by the greatest yankee position player we will ever see got together and thanked the crowd and the fans. It was really touching. It really wipes away all the bad feelings about this year and makes you realize what a privilege it is to be a Yankee fan. Making the playoffs is tough, and we have seen them do it since 1995, lets be happy for that. This team will still be in the top 8 in wins. Nowhere else do you get that history, nowhere else do the players appreciate the fans as much as the Yankees do. It almost feels like they won the World Series last night.

  4. Evan September 22nd, 2008 at 12:37 pm

Okay. I clicked on the link, and it looks fine! Now, how do you submit a question? I don’t see a place for submissions.

    Anyways, my questions are:

    1. did you cry at any point yesterday, and why or why not?

    2. will the patriots win atleast 7 games?

  5. trisha - BRING BOBBY BACK! September 22nd, 2008 at 12:50 pm

Just waking up from the best day and night of my life. There is no way anything will ever top what they did at the Stadium last night. I’ll talk more about my own experiences later as this is Pete’s time coming up soon. There were so many emotional moments but the crowning glory was when the team walked around the field after the game, saluting the fans in the stand. I will NEVER forget that moment.

Anyway a few of the comments I read in a previous thread had to do with posters’ disappointment with the fact that CM wasn’t there there. He absolutely was and walked around the field with the rest of the team. I have some stories of pretty nice moments from yesterday and last night and being not even 10 feet from Jorge Posada, Mo, the guys in the bullpen, and about a foot away from Michael Kay. :)

The best day and night of my life.

  11. jennifer September 22nd, 2008 at 12:53 pm

I’m sure there are a lot of tired Yankee fans at work today, or maybe not at work.

  12. Bleacher Creature September 22nd, 2008 at 12:54 pm

This is what you guys call work.

  15. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and hopefully the offense won't be so offensive. September 22nd, 2008 at 12:58 pm

There you are Pete. I see you.

  16. trisha - BRING BOBBY BACK! September 22nd, 2008 at 1:00 pm

We got on the road about 1:30 I think. We stayed at the Stadium forever. Didn’t want to leave.

  17. VAB (1933-2006) September 22nd, 2008 at 1:03 pm

Don’t kill the messenger,,,,but THIS slug coming up with a good pitching performance AT Boston,,,vs. Beck@$$ is the only thing keeping us alive right now. When Girardi said that the Yankees were alive only by the slimmest of margins, he was not just bumping his gums !
    :-(
    .
    .
    Indians probable pitcher
    Zach Jackson
    #57 LHP
    (0-3) 6.35 ERA 23 SO
Bio | Stats | Game | Splits Indians: Jackson didn’t look much better in his start Tuesday against the Twins, and was still unable to collect his first win of the season. Jackson, acquired in the CC Sabathia deal, has yet to show dazzling stuff since he was called up after the Paul Byrd trade. He went 5 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits. After allowing a run in the first inning, Jackson gave up the bulk of the damage in a four-run fifth inning, when the Twins strung together a double and four singles to creep back into the once-lopsided game. This will be Jackson’s first action against Boston.

Answers some questions from last night:

:All season, the Yankees had been dealing with the issue of visiting players wanting to leave with something from the stadium. Inevitably, Trost said, visiting players asked for bases.

“We are going through so many bases because players on the other teams are asking for them,” Trost said. “We are changing the bases all the time.”

As for home plate, that is spoken for; the team plans to take it to the new stadium.”

  19. jennifer September 22nd, 2008 at 1:05 pm

Oh wait Pete isn’t typing, he is just stating his answers? I can’t hear it. :(

  20. Christina September 22nd, 2008 at 1:06 pm

is anyone elses comments not posting on the chat thing?

  21. jennifer September 22nd, 2008 at 1:07 pm

Mine, maybe it takes time for it to go through?

  22. Ed - strange things happens in baseball [the Yankee stadium ghosts will come out] September 22nd, 2008 at 1:08 pm

Pete, what did you think about Jose Molina hitting the last home run on the last day of the stadium?

  23. jennifer September 22nd, 2008 at 1:09 pm

ed wrong place to type questions you have to click the link, you’ll see a box to type it.

  24. Dennis September 22nd, 2008 at 1:10 pm

Don’t you think Bernie was a class act last night??

And what about Willie Randolph’s slide?

Future- what do you think about Aceves?

  25. Ed - strange things happens in baseball [the Yankee stadium ghosts will come out] September 22nd, 2008 at 1:10 pm

    thanks jen.

  26. Ed - strange things happens in baseball [the Yankee stadium ghosts will come out] September 22nd, 2008 at 1:11 pm

    wow my question for stolen.

  27. Cobra 272 September 22nd, 2008 at 1:11 pm

I wish we had Santana and were still playing important games… the stadium deserved it.

Sad that we took advantage of the fact that it was the final season and attendance would be high in order to rebuild. Rather than give the stadium the proper sendoff and go all out to win.

Hopefully next year, Hal/Cashman try to win in the 1st year of the stadium instead of another ‘transition’ season.

  28. Ed - strange things happens in baseball [the Yankee stadium ghosts will come out] September 22nd, 2008 at 1:13 pm

I watched the replay of last night’s game. I seriously found it annoying that Joe Morgan and John Miller kept on mentioning (rubbing it in) that the Yankees aren’t making it to the playoffs. Morgan said he technically the Yanks are still in it, but Miller said he already eliminited them. Other than that, fun and good game. Molina hitting the last home run in the stadium.

  29. Dennis September 22nd, 2008 at 1:14 pm

How do I enter questions in the live blog?
    I don’t see a link or a box to type…

  30. jennifer September 22nd, 2008 at 1:18 pm

to the right of the live video.

  31. trisha - BRING BOBBY BACK! September 22nd, 2008 at 1:18 pm

I’m not saying it’s going to happen. It probably is NOT going to happen. But I still love the fact that we are down to the final week and the Yanks haven’t been eliminated. That’s pretty good for a team that has underperformed for most of the season! (Guess it’s a tribute to how good they really are when they did play their game.) By the way, and not to bring up a sore topic, but there are other things that have happened in the game of baseball that shocked everyone’s realities…

So no, we probably won’t see the playoffs – but – until we know we won’t, there is a still a chance we will. :)

  32. jennifer September 22nd, 2008 at 1:20 pm

Are we going to be able to watch the video later? I can’t watch it at work.

  33. Rebecca--Optimist Prime September 22nd, 2008 at 1:27 pm

Solid job for the first one Pete. A very nice feature and hopefully you do a few more this off-season.

  41. Joe from Long Island September 22nd, 2008 at 1:48 pm

You’re tops, Pete, even if you did skip my question.

    Good job.

  42. E-Man September 22nd, 2008 at 1:49 pm

weak.. I asked about chase wright and got nothing.

  43. Ralph September 22nd, 2008 at 1:49 pm

Thanks Pete, that was great stuff. And thanks for your coverage this year once again.

  44. mel September 22nd, 2008 at 1:50 pm

    Pete,

    Most excellent video chat.

Very good answer about the best moment in Yankee history.

    No Pettitte in the rotation?

Can you please do a mailbag? I think a lot of good questions didn’t make it through.

    Thanks!

  45. Mark in Tampa September 22nd, 2008 at 1:51 pm

Great feature, I don’t know if my computer screwed up, or if there was so much traffic that a lot got squeezed out. Hope to see another one soon.

  46. For $13 I'll be a Macadamia Nut September 22nd, 2008 at 1:51 pm

Pete, this was great. Thank you for such a great blog, the live blogging was interesting to watch as well.

  47. DMan September 22nd, 2008 at 1:51 pm

I wish I could have watched this. No video here at work.

I hope they post a link so I watch this later.

  48. no.27 September 22nd, 2008 at 1:52 pm

Here’s a question I asked that didn’t get through that some of you might have an opinion on.

If the Yankees decide to make a trade for a centerfielder, do you think the Dodgers would take Nady and Kennedy for Kemp?

  49. Doreen September 22nd, 2008 at 1:53 pm

I had to miss the live chat – I’ll catch the re-play (?).

I just want to reiterate what others have said, Pete, about this being a great place to come and share my Yankee/baseball fanaticism.

For anyone who is new here, just know that this is the place to be in the off-season. Pete does an incredible job of keeping everyone current. There is always something to “debate.”

  50. For $13 I'll be a Macadamia Nut September 22nd, 2008 at 1:54 pm

I am wondering about that no Pettitte in the rotation as well. According to Pettitte Girardi has already indicated that he would like him back next year.

Mussina is probably the more likely to come back, but if Pettitte doesn’t retire, I could see him back for another year as well. Or maybe a half season?

  51. GreenBeret7 September 22nd, 2008 at 1:54 pm

E-Man…Just a guess, but, I think Chase Wright is another good bet to be in a NL trade. He’s another of the NL type pitchers, and the fact that he’s left handed will make him attractive, not as a centerpiece, but as an extra added attraction.

  52. mel September 22nd, 2008 at 1:57 pm

Very nice recap of the night….

  53. Brandon (We'll miss you Yankees Stadium !)..."Keep Manny away !" September 22nd, 2008 at 2:01 pm

OT: For you gold digging hussies out there I hear a 3B is officially single now.

    —————————————-

Anyway I think this offseason we will learn that Hal Steinbrener is running the show, if Cashman returns which to be honest his regime has been shaky but the rebuilding effort needs to continue otherwise these guarantees for next season means nothing. I think the one memory I’ll take of last night has to be that walk around the stadium by the whole team I liked the speech but the tip of the hats followed by the lap around the field is going to be a story I tell my kids about.

  54. Mark in Tampa September 22nd, 2008 at 2:01 pm

I’ve got to think that Kennedy has about no trade value. Nady is still 29 and a corner outfielder. Don’t see them bringing in Kemp when AJax is no more than a year away. Not sure Nady for Kemp makes sense for the Dodgers either. Any trade where we offer Kennedy, I think the other GM will demand Hughes instead.

  55. DMan September 22nd, 2008 at 2:02 pm

    I love Andy, always have…

But if he wants to come back, I don’t think he should have a set spot in the rotation. I think there will be quite a few players competeing for a spot.

  56. harwood September 22nd, 2008 at 2:05 pm

Im really enjoying this Pete. Would be nice to see more of you doing a mailbag.

  57. Bye Bye Bernie and all Yanks September 22nd, 2008 at 2:06 pm

Prediction: If the Sox don’t win tonight, the yanks are playing meaningful games the last three games of the regular season.

If they lose tonight… Cliff Lee is up next (guarenteed lock Cy Young). Fausto Carmona is up after that (not the same pitcher he was last year)… however, if they lost those three… imagine the pressure of the fourth game of the Sox/Indians series… Indians have won 6 games in a row here…

Jays mailed it in vs. Sox this weekend; can’t see that changing

That being said… Sox are going to win tonight.

  58. mel September 22nd, 2008 at 2:08 pm

I think that the team is headed in the right direction after being saddled with huge contracts.

Cashman deserves not only to come back, but to be treated right. Shame on Hank trying to negotiate through his mole media shills.

The bullpen is only going to get better. You don’t think that our bullpen, even without Mo, couldn’t close out the Mets’ games?

The team needs new life. The new stadium, new rotation, and some new faces will do the job.

  59. Fran September 22nd, 2008 at 2:10 pm

I guess I was too late for the live chat. Oh well I’ll try to make the next one.

  60. ZMAN7777 September 22nd, 2008 at 2:11 pm

Very nice closing night, but it obviously came too early. This team needs to view everything dispassionately in the offseason, or it will continue to live off past glories rather than present/future successes. Let’s hope for an end to the decline that began in 2004.

  61. DMan September 22nd, 2008 at 2:13 pm

I hope last night lit a spark under some of the younger players in the organization…

Not just for the rest of this season, but for years to come.

Cano looked like he was really taken in by the excitment and the majesty of the whole event. Maybe it’ll motivate him?

  62. ZMAN7777 September 22nd, 2008 at 2:14 pm

“Cashman deserves not only to come back, but to be treated right . . . ”

    “The team needs new life.”

I would argue that these two statements are somewhat contradictory. I agree with point #2 wholeheartedly, and disagree with the first point with the same passion.

  63. Brandon (We'll miss you Yankees Stadium !)..."Keep Manny away !" September 22nd, 2008 at 2:15 pm

I still wouldn’t deal Robi I got a feeling he’s going to bounce back.

  64. mel September 22nd, 2008 at 2:18 pm

Also thought Pete was very down on Cano. It’s true that his trade value is down, but I have a feeling that Cano’s still a big part of the Yankees’ plans.

  65. E-Man September 22nd, 2008 at 2:26 pm

    GreenBeret7,

My question was more along the lines of why Pavano and Hughes were more deserving than Chase Wright?

As far as him being an NL pitcher that remains to be seen. He’s only pitched 10 innings in the AL. Kei Igawa has gotten more of a chance than this guy.

  66. mel September 22nd, 2008 at 2:31 pm

I think the better question is why were Rasner and Ponson more deserving than Chase Wright.

But I get your point. Chase should’ve gotten a shot. Like in August.

  67. Betsy September 22nd, 2008 at 2:31 pm

    I love Tom Verducci……not.

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.c.....ml?eref=T1

He basically spends the whole article whining about the loss of YS and that the Yankees’ history and memories will not transfer to the new stadium. I don’t think it’s in this article, but in another about Jeter, where he basically says the new YS is nothing but a hollow shell of the old one and can never be the real Yankee Stadium even though it has YANKEE STADIUM on it.

Seriously, I loved and will always love this Stadium; I think all of us will. However, eventually a new park was going to be built; nothing lasts forever. It’s idiotic to say that the history of the Yankees does not transfer to the new park. I guess that means that when the first game is played there, the slate is wiped clean and it as if Ruth and company never existed?

I hope when the new YS opens, Tom Verducci is not there to write about it (since he already hates it so much)

  68. Doreen September 22nd, 2008 at 2:44 pm

    Betsy -

Right now, the new YS is a hollow shell because there are no people inside it. It’s the people – the players, the fans, the employees – that bring a place to life. Does Verducci think that there will be no Yankees fans there next season or beyond? Does he think that just because it’s a new place that the players won’t be motivated to play good baseball?

Another way to look at it is that the players will have motivation to continue the history and tradition of the franchise across the street.

I guess he had to write something different.

  69. Frank from Chatham September 22nd, 2008 at 3:16 pm

When do the Yankees start the replacement process for Derek. No one appears ready in the organization. And, down the road, the likehood of him playing 1B is high but maybe Posada will get their first. Vid is GREAT.
