This press release from the Yankees:

Hideki Matsui will not travel with the team to Toronto and will instead have arthroscopic surgery performed on his left knee on Monday evening by Dr. Scott Rodeo at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan.

You have to hand it to ‘zilla. He sat out for eight straight games, got up in the third inning and drilled a single to right.

Hideki cares and gets it, fast recovery Hideki we need you for next year.

Love Matsui-san! Best of luck with the surgery and recovery. Hope to see a healthy, strong Hideki in the spring.

Hey, this is kind of a stupid question, but I know they usually do rookie hazing right before they leave for the last roadtrip of the season. They’re obviously not doing that tonight — are they gonna do it at all? Just curious!

    cool tidbit:

Damon’s bat and Molina’s spikes are headed to the HOF. :)

Very nice coverage tonight pete. I sometimes think you’re too hard on some of the players, but I have to hand it to you very nice coverage (on top of a really great blog that is a daily read).

Its touching to read how much tonight meant to so many players with so many different perspectives from Jeter & Rivera to Matsui to Gardner.

They don’t leave for Toronto until tomorrow afternoon.

They usually make the rookies sign autographs in the costumes but with tomorrow being an off day that’s not likely to happen.

    pat,

Thanks for the help earlier. I actually got to see the game from about the 5th inning.

    Who pulled the lever?

  8. rackem

Michael Kay pulled the lever =/

    You’re welcome.

The last lever puller was ….wait for it…..Michael Kay. With a stadium full of former players and celebrities, I have no idea why Kay got the honors!

God bless matsui! I hope he gets healthy and is able to contribute in a BIG way next year. I still think he is the most underrated hitter on the team.

    THIS MAN GETS IT DONE!

  11. DYNASTY IS DESTINY!

Best of luck to you, Hideki! Looking forward to a ton of clutch hits from you next year!

    Pat,

It’s only fitting. I don’t know why people (i.e., Pete) made such a big deal out of it. The only thing I can see wrong, is pulling the lever for a ‘0′. See? Only fitting.

However, he’s starting to grow on me just a little. He’s not as pompous and even self-deprecating (I love this quality in famous people). It was actually enjoyable to have him in the booth w/ Miller and Morgan. Kay was very smooth. Although that’s not saying much sitting with a couple of octagenarians.

  13. S.A.-Yankee Stadium: Thank you for the many great memories!. We need registration for this blog

    Good luck to Hideki!

  14. JoeT 28 in 09.... So glad that I made it to the stadium from FL this year!!

REALLY Cool of Matsui to wait and play the last game at the Stadium – I love that guy and hope his clutch hitting is with us next year!!
