Thursday’s matchup is a perfect set-up for a Pavano injury / “Doc” Hallady joke. Any takers?

  2. JoeT 28 in 09.... So glad that I made it to the stadium from FL this year!! September 23rd, 2008 at 12:21 am

Just saw on the bottom line of ESPN that (someone that’s not lohud) is reporting that Hal told Cashman the team wants him back next year

  3. Rebecca--Optimist Prime September 23rd, 2008 at 12:24 am

Joe: Kat O’Brien’s had it up all day.

  4. mel September 23rd, 2008 at 12:25 am

Pavano sees Doc during batting practice.

    “What’s up, Doc?”
    “Nothing much. How ya feeling?”
“Not too good, Doc…Hey, think you can write me a sick note?”

  5. Stormrider6 September 23rd, 2008 at 12:25 am

Hadn’t that already been stated by one of the Little Steins? I am pretty sure I remember hearing that the ball was in Cash’s court.

  6. Stormrider6 September 23rd, 2008 at 12:27 am

    Good one, mel.

  7. Rebecca--Optimist Prime September 23rd, 2008 at 12:30 am

    mel: Nice.

  8. zellyanks91 September 23rd, 2008 at 12:31 am

It’s sweepin time. It would be a miraculous come back if the yankees made a one game playoff between them and the sox. It would shock the baseball world..

    Kevin

  9. Rebecca--Optimist Prime September 23rd, 2008 at 12:42 am

Kevin: It would do more than that.

    It would transcend the game.

  10. Andrea September 23rd, 2008 at 12:44 am

    oh good. Pavano is pitching.

  11. Christina September 23rd, 2008 at 12:44 am

I am glad I went on the last series roadtrip to Toronto. Pavano vs Halladay? lol what a matchup. Hughes and Burnett is comical too. Could be his chance at 1 win this year.

Pete, tell my buddy Jerry I said hello.

  12. Mark (Brett is back) September 23rd, 2008 at 12:45 am

Carmona has appealed a six-game suspension for his role in Friday’s bench-clearing brawl with the Tigers and, barring a quick appeals process, will make his final start of ’08.

  13. Game 163 September 23rd, 2008 at 12:46 am

did they do the coin flip yet by the way? if yanks and sox had a play in game?

  14. Christina September 23rd, 2008 at 12:49 am

why waste your time flipping a coin, there isnt a chance they are going to need an extra game.

  15. Christina September 23rd, 2008 at 12:50 am

Pavano vs Halladay should be enough for you. If that isnt, check out Phil Hughes vs Burnett. That is the same Phil Hughes who is 0-4 this year.

  16. Rebecca--Optimist Prime September 23rd, 2008 at 12:51 am

I’m going to enjoy remaining in contention while I still can.

  17. Buddy Biancalana September 23rd, 2008 at 12:52 am

    Christina-

We are grasping at straws, how about some positive energy.

  18. Buddy Biancalana September 23rd, 2008 at 12:52 am

    Rebecca-

Way to be an Optimist Prime!

  19. mel September 23rd, 2008 at 12:53 am

No need to flip a coin. If it ends in a tie, the Sox should just concede, just like Olazabel did this weekend.

  20. Game 163 September 23rd, 2008 at 12:54 am

i’m not saying it’s likely.. but baseball usually does this in most situations where a team is still mathematically alive this late… just in case.

rockies and phillies last year? not saying it’s likely, but MLB does prepare for these things.

  21. Christina September 23rd, 2008 at 12:56 am

Ok, positive. If we sweep toronto we can shoot for third.

  22. pat September 23rd, 2008 at 12:59 am

“Hank Steinbrenner recently mentioned the possibility of establishing an advisory board, but Hal, who is more involved on a daily basis, talked down that possibility. Hal said having advisers is important, but that he doesn’t envision making the GM some figurehead role.

“We all think Brian’s done a good job,” Hal Steinbrenner said.

Steinbrenner said they had not talked about potential replacements for Cashman. Cashman and the Steinbrenners are expected to meet next week, possibly in Tampa so that George can attend.”

I looked it up.. the yanks would host:

  24. Game 163 September 23rd, 2008 at 1:01 am

    except that was 2005!

How about they play it at shea and call it even? The mets need something to remember that stadium by…

  25. Timmy September 23rd, 2008 at 1:01 am

how is Hughes vs burnette comical? All it is to me is one last chance to see aj dominate against us before he is pitching for us.

  26. mel September 23rd, 2008 at 1:01 am

If the Yankees enter the series 3 GB, they’ll probably do a flip for show. I think the Twins & Sox had a flip, but it’s no longer relevant.

If you wanted details about how good a season Mo had. Lots of sidebars. I’ll ignore Olney’s outrage at Clemens being left out. He fails to mention that none of the others are embroiled in lawsuits, federal investigations, and possible charges of perjury

  27. Buddy Biancalana September 23rd, 2008 at 1:02 am

That is from 2005, what are u smoking?

  28. Christina September 23rd, 2008 at 1:04 am

I hope not for the Yankees sake. He has been a Pavano for the Jays since they got him. Granted, they did get more out of him then the yankees got out of Carl, but still his apt for injury makes him such a liability. He is going to want at least 4 or 5 years and alot of money. Hes not worth it, but thats my opinion.

  29. Game 163 September 23rd, 2008 at 1:07 am

all i know is, you can only take it one day at a time and the longer it goes the more interesting it goes. i really thought the sox would clinch tonight on their own terms, not “back into it” with the yanks losing at the same time. But they didn’t. two guys on in the ninth.. nothing to show for it. bases loaded 1 out 2 inning earlier… two weak outs. Ball bouncing off the stands with two runners on results in a force out. I’ve seen just as many red sox games as yankee games this year… they have a lot of injuries and they just don’t look like a team getting “a lot of bounces”. Cleveland is on fire now too.. is that seven in a row and they have “cough sound” cliff lee throwing. i hear he has at least one cy young vote in the bag.

That being said, i bet the yanks lay an egg today and eliminate themselves. too much emotion from sunday.

  30. Rebecca--Optimist Prime September 23rd, 2008 at 1:12 am

Baseball is such a weird sport that it can keep me up at 1.00 am on a Tuesday evening.

By all logical standards of thought, the Yankees aren’t going to be playing in October, and yet…

…we follow a sport where the impossible happens all the time.

Things that we think we’ll never see, we see.

Things we think teams will never do, they do.

Even when all logic says that you can pencil in X for ____, you end up writing Y.

Because the season’s so long, you never know when a team’s on the verge of a collapse or a miraculous run.

Right now, ever sign, every bone, every fiber of my being leads me to think that there is probably no way the Yankees make the postseason.

    And yet, I think…

If the next three games, if we can sweep Toronto and Boston loses it’s next three versus Cleveland…unlikely, but stranger things can happen, especially when Cleveland has Fausto and Lee on the mound…if that can happen

and if the Yankees can go to Boston…and have those games mean something…

Even if the Yankees don’t come out on top, they would have gotten to a point where they control their own destiny.

think about it. If by some miracle we get to Boston and haven’t officially be eliminated, we won’t need to scoreboard watch.

Our fate would be our own doing.

It’s just a dream, but if there’s a place to dream the impossible dream, it’s between the foul poles.

    MLB: Impossible Lives Here

  31. Game 163 September 23rd, 2008 at 1:16 am

i’m just crazy because i actually spent 4 hours in cleveland airport coming back from buckeye land yesterday. The ESPN.com story was interesting… all about how they wanted to beat the sox because of what happened to them in the ALCS last year. So they have incentive.

Agree… I consider it a nice end to the season if they get to Boston playing meaningful games. It may turn out the games are totally meaningless too… if Tampa Bay clinches the division by then as well. Their magic number if 4 for that.

I’m going to go watch Major League now. Willie Mays Hayes! Go Tribe!

  32. Christina September 23rd, 2008 at 1:16 am

Well at least they are in a city like Toronto and will be able to ease the pain at the brass rail.

  33. john_halfz September 23rd, 2008 at 1:35 am

The only goal is beating Jesse Litsch tomorrow. Whatever happens with Boston tomorrow, the Yankees can do themselves proud by playing with the same intensity they brought to their last homestand.

Let’s not think about Boston until we hit Fenway.

  34. john_halfz September 23rd, 2008 at 1:39 am

In the long view, the Yankees will have nothing to be ashamed of if they can get to 90. You can’t concede until it’s over, but they can get to 86 tomorrow night, and that’s all we need right now. I’ll keep an eye on Cliff Lee, but the action tomorrow is all at Rogers.

Not sure I’ll ever muster the enthusiasm to catch the Yanks at their new home, but the last couple of weeks have renewed my desire to see them on the road a few times next year.

Yankee Stadium (the new version) is too tough to contemplate for me right now. Saw my first game at YS in 1988. Kansas City beat them 5-3, but Mattingly showed the spirit they’ll need now by putting himself on with a double in the 9th to bring the tying run up.

  35. john_halfz September 23rd, 2008 at 1:45 am

I’ve missed a lot of these threads because of travel and because of stadium closing depression. I’m sure this has been covered ad nauseum, but I’m curious to hear a few favorite memories. Mine:

    1) Arriving to Yankee Stadium from Washington, DC, after getting last minute word that a friend had unexpected field seats. By the time we got in, Chacon had coughed up two runs. It was 9-0 about 30 minutes later and I was really depressed that I’d blown money and a half workday to watch a blowout. Taking the 3 AM bus back to DC for work at 9 the next morning didn’t matter at all after Jorge hit the walkoff.

    2) Going with my father and grandfather in 1992 to watch the Tigers and Yankees. Tettleton hit a grand slam into the upper deck to put Detroit up in the 5th (right after my grandfather, a Tigers fan, predicted he’d hit it where he did). Travis Fryman tossed me a ball in the pregame warmups and the Yankees held on to win after retaking the lead in the bottom of the 6th.

    3) Watching on television as Ruben Sierra and Don Mattingly went back-to-back in the ALDS in 1995. Hang on to the roof!

  36. ariel September 23rd, 2008 at 2:33 am

    My memorable stadium moments:

….My first game in person..1949, Tommy Henrich winning it with a homer and Joe Page saving it in relief.
….1951, Mickey’s rookie season, many frustrations as the potential was overwhelming but very difficult until he was recalled. Allie Reynolds two no hitters, including Yogi’s muff of Ted W.’s foul with two out in the ninth, but succesful on the second chance.
….1956, Mickey’s triple crown, the greatest individual season ever; Don Larson’s perfect game.
    ….1961, M & M
….1996, Girardi’s triple and Charlie’s catch to seal it.
    ….1996 — 2001, everything
….2002 –2008, Absolute frustration, but things seem to even out over the years.

  37. no.27 September 23rd, 2008 at 2:47 am

It needs to get to Sowers vs. Lester on Thursday. By that point, all bets are off.

  38. no.27 September 23rd, 2008 at 3:00 am

i wish sabathia was pitching instead of sowers

  39. Nick in SF September 23rd, 2008 at 3:23 am

I wish Sabathia was pitching instead of Pavano!

  40. ARX September 23rd, 2008 at 3:32 am

Out of all the matchups, out of all the possibilites, with all the times this season where it seemed we were stuck putting the dregs of our rotation against BOS/ANA etc….how the hell did we end up drawing Burnett and Halliday AGAIN?!?!?!?!

  41. KiKi September 23rd, 2008 at 3:34 am

    Where is Aceves?
Why don’t let Aceves to pitch?

  42. kasey September 23rd, 2008 at 4:28 am

if mussina wins and hughes pitches well, i’ll consider this series a complete success.

cool reading everyone’s stories about the stadium. very cool. it’s a drag the way this season turned out but it was nice to take a night off from thinking about how they’re a third place team.

  43. Ray September 23rd, 2008 at 5:29 am

Drawing Halliday can’t be a coincidence. Somehow in his 33 starts, Halliday will have faced either the Yankees (6), Red Sox (5) or Rays (5) 16 times.

  44. you gotta have faith (i miss posada)(phil coke is awesome) September 23rd, 2008 at 6:35 am

the hughs vs aj and the pavano vs doc makes me nervous

but i guess it doesnt really matter who goes against them if we dont hit them so comeone batters these pitchers arent unhittable!

  45. joed September 23rd, 2008 at 7:32 am

I thank the good Lord for making me a Yankee fan.

  46. Doreen September 23rd, 2008 at 7:38 am

    Good morning, all.

Well, those pesky Red Sox! It would have been so much easier if they had won last night. Easier on me, that is. Because instead of being able to watch the last 6 games in peace, I will have agita with every blessed pitch!

My head says, no way. My spirit says, why not? Hope springs eternal, at least for another few hours.

One step at a time is key. First, get Moose his win, so the quest for 20 stays alive for him.

At the very least, if the dream ends, I want it to end because the Red Sox won, not because the Yankees lost.

I won’t play the “if only they had won this or that game” game. Every game has always been important, and I believe they wanted to win every game, but they did not. The fact that they are still (barely) breathing with 6 games left, in light of everything that has gone awry this season, including their own inexplicable inability to hit with RISP, is amazing in and of itself.

I would love for the miracle to happen. And, who’s to say the YS ghosts didn’t high-tail it up to Boston (on their way to Toronto, of course) in time for the bottom of the 9th last night?

In spite of the fact the I myself have mostly resigned myself to a playoff-less October, I hate it when “outsiders” do the same. If they do make it, I’m afraid the Yankees, yet again, don’t have enough starting pitching. I’m afraid, yet again, they’d have to go through the LAAofA.

But, it’s fun to have some excitement left, even an hour at a time, during the last week of the season, isn’t it????

  47. Doreen September 23rd, 2008 at 7:42 am

By the way, though the Rays won, David Price showed he was hittable, and did not get the win. I know he’s a great talent, but I just wanted to point out it’s not just the Yankees’ prospects that will have some trouble on the major league level. Price pitched 5 and 1/3, 4 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned, walks 3, k’s 3. He gave up the 2 runs after his team had staked him to a 2-0 lead. It’s not always smooth sailing. Let’s have some patience with our own.

  48. bodhisattva September 23rd, 2008 at 8:09 am

^^^^^ “Let’s have some patience with our own.”

Yup, Doreen. I liked the way Hughes battled his last start. He was also awesome in the Scranton clincher. We have him, and some good ones on the way up. Yankee fans should be excited about the pitching riches we can look forward to over the next 5-10 years.

  49. Fredo Corleone September 23rd, 2008 at 8:29 am

    “Where is Aceves?
Why don’t let Aceves to pitch?”

Someone had to be skipped in the rotation to facilitate Mussina getting 2 starts. Looks like Aceves was that guy. I’d guess he pitches Saturday in Fenway between Pettitte and Mussina.

  50. Betsy September 23rd, 2008 at 8:33 am

Mariano is “arguably” baseball’s greatest closer? LOL I didn’t bother reading the rest of the article when I saw that. There is no debate about the best closer in history, period. Buster? I don’t care what he says. He lost all credibility on Sunday when he agreed with the host that the Yankees farm system is so bad that they may go into an 80′s type tailspin. Awwwww, so Buster is upset at the big bad Yankees. Whatever. All these sportswriters are doing (and a lot of them are doing it) is trying to throw cold water on a glorious experience. I won’t let them do it.

  51. Betsy September 23rd, 2008 at 8:35 am

I just hope the Yankees play well the last few games of the season; it’s not fair to expect them to win every game. I would kill, however for Moose to win tonight, and for Phil to pitch well on Wednesday. He’s the story of that game, not whether the Yanks can hit Burnett. This is Phil’s last start of the year before he goes to the AFL and it’s important that he build off of his last outing. Most important? Lower that pitch count – he’s not going to be any kind of major league pitcher if he throws so many pitches that he has to be yanked before the 5th on a consistent basis.

  52. Fredo Corleone September 23rd, 2008 at 8:37 am

    Doreen:

Was watching some of Price’s start and came away very impressed. No hit the O’s for 4 innings. In the 5th Longoria made an error to allow a runner. Then he gave up 2 singles and a walk to allow a run. This is where I found him particularly impressive. 2-1 game, bases loaded, no outs and he gets Roberts, Markakis and Adam Jones in order to get out of the inning tied (Roberts was a sac fly). That kid is going to be very good.

  53. Doreen September 23rd, 2008 at 8:44 am

    Fredo -

Thanks for the fill-in. Just goes to show how much a box score does not show!

Price is absolutely going to be at least a very good pitcher. You’ll get no argument from me there.

  54. Yankee Nation September 23rd, 2008 at 9:25 am

All I care about, is winning 2 games this final week. Tonights, and the final game of the year, both W’s, going to Mike Mussina so he can get to 20. If he gets that, I will consider this year worth not seeing them in October.

  55. Save Us September 23rd, 2008 at 9:29 am

I hate that Aceves is being skipped, particularly because Toronto hasn’t seen him to the best of my knowledge. However, rejoice that we dont have a Sidney or a Darrell sighting.

  56. Save Us September 23rd, 2008 at 9:30 am

    – Could make him a good set up man for Joba in 2 years after Mo retires.

    happy birthday “JOBA”

  58. RalphieD September 23rd, 2008 at 12:09 pm

  59. 86w183 September 23rd, 2008 at 12:59 pm

Aceves was getting one more start either way. It’ll be good for him to pitch at Fenway Park.

  60. John McCain and Abel September 23rd, 2008 at 1:34 pm

One game playoff here we come!!

This will be a sweep for the Yankees!!

Burnett, Litsch, and Halladay are a combined 7-4 against the Yankees and have been beaten to the tune of a 2.78ERA!!

    EASY SWEEP!

  61. NY fan September 23rd, 2008 at 1:53 pm

Cleveland can win the next three in Boston.
    They beat Beckett last night…
Cliff Lee is pitching tonight vs. Wakefield
    Wed: carmona Vs. Byrd
    Thurs: Sox have Lester going
Three day sweep in Boston for a playoff spot anyone?

  62. Yankee Nation September 23rd, 2008 at 3:19 pm

No, not three day sweep in Boston for a playoff spot. I will not sit back and watch the Yankees once again get out played by the Angels because they don’t have a playoff ready team.

Bear with me, if you will, the rotation matchups if the Yankees made a miraculous run and a collapse by Boston and NYY won the WC.

    Yankees
    Pettitte
    Moose
    PAVANO
    Hughes
    Aceves

    Angels
    Lackey
    Santana
    Saunders
    Garland
    Moseley

result: Angels destroy Yankees. And in the end, is it really worth the pain and misery of failing again and once more yelling at the TV that A-Rod blows chunks in October, or questioning them for having Carl Pavano on your postseason roster? to me, its not. All I want, is Moose to win 20 games, so he can brush the borderline out from in front of his HoF title. The Yankees are not built for the postseason, and the offseason will be dedicated to doing just that, and then next year they will repeat 1923, opening the stadium first year with the WS title.
