Yankees hit the field early in Toronto

Peter Abraham
September
23

As they often do after a day off when on the road, the Yankees are having an optional workout.

Those on the field include:

Brett Gardner
Robbie Cano
Chad Moeller
Cody Ransom
Andy Pettitte (taking grounders at short)
Jose Veras
Phil Coke
Wilson Betemit

CMW is throwing what amount to pitches in right field under the supervision of Dave Eiland. He’s not ready to get up on the mound quite yet.

Pettitte taking grounders at short? What is this Pete?!? Do some investigating please!!

  2. gayle

Pete can you remember the last time Robbie Cano took optional BP on such a day??

  3. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

    I love me some coke.

  4. Patrick Bateman

Gardner doesn’t want to go back to AAA next year.

  5. Fredo Corleone

“Gardner doesn’t want to go back to AAA next year.”

He’s got to somewhere to learn to hit.

  6. Fredo Corleone

    *go

CMW is getting ready for the playoffs!!!!!

boy that whole “coke” thing gets funnier and funnier!

  9. Jimw

I thought it was kinda funny that Coke was out front tipping his hat to fans when they were circling the field like he’d won four rings or something. I mean come on…dude hasn’t done nothing yet.

  10. Rebecca--Optimist Prime

Dude’s only helped us stave off elimination.

okay, so it might not be much, but it works for me.

  11. gayle

Jim no he hasnt but he came up this year and got a great reception from the fans and he has just as much right to tip his cap to the fans and say thank for making this year special for me than anyone else.

  12. Jimw

Don’t get me wrong I like the guy but if you weren’t a Yankee fan you’d think he were a 10 year vet.

“boy that whole “coke” thing gets funnier and funnier!”

If this is sarcastic, I agree.

    Gayle,

I seem to remember Pete mentioning often that Cano is out there for early BP.

But, of course, I could be misremembering…

Is it significant that Melky isn’t there? I guess he hasn’t figured out that his future in MLB is in question if he doesn’t improve his performance.

  16. Brad

Phil Coke appears to be happy for the chance to be a Yankee and will listen to anything and everything that’s suggested to remain part of the pitching staff.
Ian Kennedy should possess such a mindset.

  17. saucY

Coke seems like he could be kind of cocky. which may be a good thing.

“Don’t get me wrong I like the guy but if you weren’t a Yankee fan you’d think he were a 10 year vet.”
Well Coke’s reception isn’t remotely as crazy as Joba-mania last year.

I feel for Melky. He was forced fed into the lineup at age 22 and had some moderate success. The Yanks, in a move to hype their fallow minor league system,Yankees print “Got Melky?” shirts and sell them at the Stadium. Then, when the kid performs at a level consistent with his morderate abilities, they make him a scapegoat.

Don’t get me wrong. Melky regressed from his moderate success of a couple of years ago. But they should have actually done more developmental work (like improving his bunting skills and learning plate discipline) in the minors before making him their starting center fielder. Now the kid seems to be messed up.

It was the TEAM thanking the fans.

What was Coke supposed to do? Follow behind the group chanting, “I’m Not Worthy”?

  21. pat

Some guys take early BP in the cages so don’t get crazy about who isn’t there.

  22. hobbie

Jeter must be hurt worse than I thought if we are resorting to an inexperienced and left handed shortstop.

When Pete says the players on the field include….. is it an all inclusive list or are their others. Is Melky doing a Shane Spencer impersonation- not showing up for practice and letting Gardiner take his job?

  23. For $13 I'll be a Macadamia Nut

hobbie, its not the lineup, its practice. It doesn’t mean that Jeter isn’t going to be in the game, though he was clearly hurting in the last game. His fielding didn’t seem like it was affected as much as his batting was.

  24. Chris NY

wasn’t there another day where Pete said Andy was on the field taking grounders at short? an inside joke somewhere that we’re all missing?

  25. Chris NY

“not showing up for practice and letting Gardiner take his job?”

Melky doesn’t have that job. He lost it a long time ago. And not to Gardner. He just played himself out of it by not hitting.

“hobbie, its not the lineup, its practice. It doesn’t mean that Jeter isn’t going to be in the game, though he was clearly hurting in the last game. His fielding didn’t seem like it was affected as much as his batting was.”

lol it was a joke about Pettite taking grounders at short. Inexperienced lefty shortstop… get it?

Good to hear about CMW. Looks like he is progressing nicely. Kevin
