Brandon,

Who’s Montero? A catcher who’ll outgrow his position? He’s what, 3 years away?

Matsui/Damon/Posada are not 1B, nor in their prime.

I’d like to have CC, but I won’t be shedding tears if we don’t get him.

Yes, he’s an ace. Yes, he’s durable. But we really need offense. And good defense.

Mel, I wouldn't be so sure that Montero won't be a catcher in the majors, and certainly not because of his size. He's a little taller than most, most, he's not pudgy with a lost of baby fat. he's 6'3"-6'4" and 225 pounds. Carlton Fisk was 6'2" and 220-225 pounds. Montero is solid, and, defensively he's a fine catcher...actually he's been better defensively than Austin Romine. I don't go too much on the steals vs caught stealing (neither had great numbers) because none of the pitchers hold the runners close. Both need to work on blocking pitches, though....too many passed balls...Montero w/11 and Romine w/18, but, Montero caught nearly twice as many games. Both of them will be in Trenton by mis-season, I think. One thing they can both do is hit.

I think that Laird will also be in Trenton by mid-season, playing first base. I also think that Romine will start playing some outfield. He's pretty quick and has a good arm...think Elston Howard in his first 5-6 years. Montero will also learn to play some first base, as most catchers do.

My problem with some of the Girardi apologists on this blog are that they want guys like Pete to give us the in the trenches/ in the locker room type of story that only guys embedded in the team can get us, while at the same time berating those same guys for doing the work needed to get those stories. You can't have it both ways. For me I am glad guys like Pete are there fighting for information and real stories about the players I care so much about. The way I am a fan is more about the players and less about the color scheme of the clothes they wear on the field. That means I listen critically and dont just say thank you when 3 days after an injury the team decides to give me a BS report about a guy I care about. If all you care about is what happens 1-9 well goody for you go read the box score, but the rest of us are interested in the guys on the team as human beings and don't see the world through pinstriped lenses.

Just finished watching this version:

http://tinyurl.com/Girardi-Inquisition

Just confirms a lot of what I've already written.

Mo either hid his concern from Joe or Joe is protecting the player.

And he was managing while Cashman was singing.

And Girardi was very patient. I would've thrown something. That's really saying something.

Any member of a professional team in NYC or the metro area should realize beforehand that a certain portion of the media they deal with can be difficult at times.
First of all, the media contingent is far larger than most cities and with deadlines to meet, the time element can cause stress in trying to get small stories or even quotes.
Like any other city, certain members of the media carry a good or bad reputation and players in particular will gravitate toward somebody not known to take things out of context.

"The example you are referring to is also more akin to the goal of cable news outlets than it is to sportswriters covering a team. Those guys are a lot more honorable than you give them credit for.

Cable news guys are in the shock, “entertainment” business to gain viewers. That’s not what baseball beat writers do."

SW, the people representing the media on that panel were: a reporter for the projo; the early morning NBC (our channel 10) anchor; someone who writes for the Pawtucket Times; a reporter who used to cover the state house and has segued over into Public Radio; and convicted felon Buddy Cianci :), former mayor of Providence who is so wildly popular that if he could run again I swear he'd get re-elected! He has a talk show on one of the radio stations. So these weren't reps of cable news channels. They all had the same story. They were not happy about it but they all said it was out of their hands.

"That said, the guys working the Yankee beat aren’t looking to entertain anybody. They are just trying to do their jobs."

If they were doing their jobs they'd ask the questions, shut up at some point, and just write their stories. Instead we have to hear this constant melodrama about how Girardi didn't give the whole story. If he didn't, shut up and say that in your column! There is enough that I want to know about that happens between innings 1 and 9 and that is my entire reason for reading sports reports. If the Yankees give up any other information in the meantime, goody for us. That's how I feel about it anyway.

You can't lump everybody in the Joel Sherman catagory.

That's where these discussions veer off the track.

There are fewer Joel Sherman's and more Kim Jones/Pete Abraham types among the traveling media corp these days.

I think some fans believe there is this great divide between the Yankees and the media. There isn't.

Its actually a pretty good team to cover. Lots of good guys on the team, interesting characters, and its absent of the Curt Schillings and Manny's of the world.

Girardi, when he doesn't get bogged down by the small stuff and turns nothing into something, can also be pretty good. He's not Joe Torre but, nobody expects him, or wants him, to be.

Like I said, guys on the team, and Girardi, know who are ok and who isn't among the media. Its not some big, dark secret.

People like Kim Jones, Pete, Feinsand, Kepner, etc, aren't on the Yankees "enemies" list.

Joel Sherman? No comment! lol

Really, even that that dust up Kim and Girardi had a while back was no big deal. He came to her the next day, apologized, and they are fine.

Look, its a pressure cooker job. That's what you sign on for when you take the gig.

Dealing with the media, regardless of what some may believe, is a big part of this job. Bigger than in any other market in America but Boston.

You think Girardi has it tough? Its worse in Boston.

Its why people talk about how tough those job are in those markets. Its a learning process almost on a daily basis for all the parties involved.

From what I have read (and I certainly have not yet seen him) Brackman has tremendous potential. I saw elsewhere (with the multiple caveats that this is one persons opinion, I have not seen Brackman, he may never reach his potential etc etc etc) that Brackman's pure stuff is at least as good if not better than Joba's. Who knows what that means other than it cannot be bad.

Not that I care but what was Francesa saying that the organization hung him out to dry. I am too busy today watching how our Congress cant negotiate a bailout without presidential politics crossing into the deal.
