    Match Moose with Wakefield.

For the love of g-d do not let Moose pitch against Dice K

  2. RalphieD (dont hate gardner) September 27th, 2008 at 5:08 pm

i dont know how to feel….

  3. E R (The Final Season) September 27th, 2008 at 5:10 pm

Well, everthing has lined up to prevent Mr. Moose from reaching 20 wins, including the weather.

  4. Joe Schmoe 2 September 27th, 2008 at 5:10 pm

why does FOX keep saying it’s in a delay

  5. James (let's play 2!) September 27th, 2008 at 5:10 pm

I would say Moose pitches the night cap..

  6. mark September 27th, 2008 at 5:10 pm

  7. RalphieD (dont hate gardner) September 27th, 2008 at 5:10 pm

    “Match Moose with Wakefield.

Both the games may not be completed due to rain.
So, the safe bet is to pitch Moose in the first game to get a chance to win.

  9. Bob(The Original) September 27th, 2008 at 5:11 pm

I hope Moose isn’t the 7:35 start, unless Extra Innings adds it to the shedule.

Be pissed if I can’t watch him go for 20.

  10. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and I still believe in Phil Hughes September 27th, 2008 at 5:13 pm

    Phooey

  11. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Ex-bookendis September 27th, 2008 at 5:13 pm

I’d rather have Moose start whichever game they’re more likely to get in.

  12. Mr. Jaggers September 27th, 2008 at 5:13 pm

I hope Moose can bag his 20th tomorrow- He and Mo were our MVP’s for this season..

  13. PUDGE, THE 08 CURSE September 27th, 2008 at 5:14 pm

girardi said the game is still delayed

  14. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing September 27th, 2008 at 5:14 pm

Is the weather forecast any better tomorrow?

  15. Mr. Jaggers September 27th, 2008 at 5:15 pm

If he does he will be the oldest pitcher to win 20 for the first time. He outlasted his critics (see any blog site from last year) and now has a guaranteed ovation at Old Timers games….

  16. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Ex-bookendis September 27th, 2008 at 5:17 pm

    From the last thread:

    Ed–post em in a comment 8-)

  17. Bob(The Original) September 27th, 2008 at 5:17 pm

So is everyone gonna be swinging at the first pitch in the nightcap?

Will A-Rod leave in the 3rd inning?

  18. Brandon (We'll miss you Yankees Stadium !)..."Keep Manny away !" September 27th, 2008 at 5:21 pm

Will A-Rod leave in the 3rd inning?

Ofcourse not you can’t expect him to wake up tomorrow, besides tonight is club night, he’s single, everyone has to know it’s 3some night.

  19. Ed - looking forward to 2009 September 27th, 2008 at 5:23 pm

    Rebecca –

    lol ok…will do.

  20. Clint September 27th, 2008 at 5:23 pm

Match Mussina up vs. Wakefield. Arrange it with Francona ahead of time if you have to, I’m sure he will understand

  21. mel September 27th, 2008 at 5:23 pm

Why are they calling it after an hour & a half? There’s a big patch of clear to the west.

  22. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Ex-bookendis September 27th, 2008 at 5:24 pm

My friend in Boston says weather forecast is rainy all day.

  23. vinny-b September 27th, 2008 at 5:24 pm

ben sheets: lasted 2 innings. 4 runs.

    = just say no

  24. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Ex-bookendis September 27th, 2008 at 5:25 pm

mel, it probably has more to do with the broadcasting than anything else.

  25. trisha - but what do I know September 27th, 2008 at 5:25 pm

I think it is beautifully fitting that it will end that way for Moose. I remember a Sunday night (I believe it was
Sunday) game that Moose pitched at fenway field, where he lost his no hitter to one horror show Carl Everett with one strike remaining in the game.

So I almost think there is some poetic justice here. I want Moose to pitch again there on a Sunday night, only this time with a perhaps less motivated Sux team and maybe a Sux team sitting out certain players since ya know they want them rested for their one and out postseason stint. :) It will be a beautiful thing if our Moose takes his 20th tomorrow night.

(Hopefully the weather cooperates. Forecast same as today so who knows.)

  26. AJ YANKS September 27th, 2008 at 5:25 pm

I’m so excited to see Brackman. Results are kind of meaningless this early, I’m just eager to see him pitch and see what his stuff looks like.

  27. Bob(The Original) September 27th, 2008 at 5:25 pm

Match Mussina up vs. Wakefield. Arrange it with Francona ahead of time if you have to, I’m sure he will understand

    Yeah, I’m sure he would.

Gimme a break, no manager would do that. What kind of message would he be sending to Wakefield?

    That’s just absurd.

  28. Sea Net September 27th, 2008 at 5:28 pm

Lilly – no hitter through 5 vs. MIL

  29. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Ex-bookendis September 27th, 2008 at 5:28 pm

AJ: Is there a place we can watch this?

  30. BBFan September 27th, 2008 at 5:28 pm

Based on the recent events, it may happen that Hank will not be involoved with Yankees next year.

Initially this season, Hal hardly was directly involved other than finances. As season went by he was pretty active, including meeting Cash and Girardi together frequently.

Another sign is their sister Jennifer seems to be more visible.

So, it is just a hunch on my part that Hank may go back to his Horse farms business which he obvioulsy likes and Hal will take full responsiblity for Yanks.

  31. mel September 27th, 2008 at 5:29 pm

    Rebecca,

I just think they don’t want the Yankees to get to 90 wins. Or they’re still hurtin’ from last night’s whoopin’. :)

Here’s the link to winter ball. They had live video for a lot of the games last year. The baby bombers are on the Beachboys. http://www.hawaiiwinterbaseball.com/

  32. RalphieD (dont hate gardner) September 27th, 2008 at 5:29 pm

i wish there was some way to watch the HWL and the AFL…

  33. #9 September 27th, 2008 at 5:30 pm

Good article by Tyler Kepner today – I pasted the part about how the Yanks need to approach next season and beyond:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09.....wanted=all

Hank Steinbrenner has publicly promised to be aggressive in pursuing free agents this winter, and the crop will be thick. The Yankees will explore Sabathia, although they are pessimistic about his desire to play for them.

They also face decisions on Pettitte and the rejuvenated Mike Mussina, and will look into the 18-game winner A. J. Burnett. A second tier of starters with past success in the American League — including Derek Lowe — may also be appealing. Pitchers without A.L. experience need not apply.

“It’s the toughest division in the league, and that’s why when teams go after pitching,” outfielder Johnny Damon said, “they can’t just throw a National League guy into the American League East. It’s a grind every single day, and that’s what G.M.’s are figuring out.”

The Yankees learned that lesson again this season with reliever LaTroy Hawkins, who was signed for $3.75 million but had a 5.71 earned run average. Traded to Houston in July, Hawkins dominated the National League.

Expect the Yankees to ignore all free-agent relievers this winter, confident in the setup corps Cashman has assembled through castoffs (Brian Bruney, Dan Giese, Edwar Ramírez, José Veras) and prospects (Phil Coke, Mark Melancon, Dave Robertson, Humberto Sánchez).

The pitching talent gives the Yankees choices, but the crop of position players in the minors is thin. A study by ESPN.com showed that only one position player drafted by the Yankees from 1997 to 2005 — the departed Andy Phillips — has amassed even 200 at-bats in the majors.

Restocking the farm system takes time, and the Yankees are excited about the Class AA center fielder Austin Jackson and the Class A catchers Jesús Montero and Austin Romine.

Yet there have also been crucial mistakes when evaluating position players in the draft. In 2004, the Yankees took pitcher Brett Smith with the 42nd pick. Later in the second round, Boston took Dustin Pedroia. A year later, the Yankees had the 17th pick and took shortstop C. J. Henry. Six picks later, the Red Sox grabbed Jacoby Ellsbury.

The lack of major-league-ready position players puts the Yankees in a tricky spot as they devise a new lineup. Two of their most productive hitters this season were Bobby Abreu and Jason Giambi, but they are free agents who are past their primes. It would be unlike Cashman to retain them with multiyear deals.

The Yankees could let Cabrera and Brett Gardner, two strong defenders, compete for the center-field job. But they must prove they can hit. The team could also see if the Dodgers would trade center fielder Matt Kemp for Canó, who has bothered many in the organization for producing so little after being rewarded with a long-term contract. Canó could be replaced at second base by a free agent like Orlando Hudson.

The free-agent first baseman Mark Teixeira is a Gold Glove fielder and a disciplined switch-hitter with power who will be only 29 when the new Yankee Stadium opens. With more than $75 million in expiring contracts, the Yankees could probably afford him.

If Teixeira replaced Giambi at first, Xavier Nady could take over for Abreu in right field, with Damon in left, Matsui at designated hitter and Gardner, Cabrera or Kemp in center.

Whoever makes the decisions — Cashman, a new general manager, or the Steinbrenners — the Yankees of 2009 will not be the same. As disappointing as it was to miss the playoffs, the Yankees understand that simply making it was not their goal in the first place.

“Our season is ending here at the end of September, but the last few years we’ve been going through this about five days after that,” Cashman said. “We’re trying to get through the entire month of October and be the last team standing, and obviously there’s a lot of work to be done. We’ll keep trying to figure it out.”

  34. trisha - but what do I know September 27th, 2008 at 5:30 pm

mel: thanks! I doubt I’ll stay up to see the whole thing, but you never know.

  37. Betsy September 27th, 2008 at 5:32 pm

Poor Moose – he’s just not destined to get 20 wins. The weather is not going to be any better tomorrow, but should they play – I want Moose going in whichever game has the better chance of getting in, as someone else posted. I almost wish he had pitched last night, after the 4th, even if it meant a cheap win.

  38. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and I still believe in Phil Hughes September 27th, 2008 at 5:32 pm

    Sloppy Brewers

  39. george September 27th, 2008 at 5:32 pm

sheesh, Ted lilly who throws a hitter every time out is probably a 4.7 ERA pitcher in the AL East.

  40. CashBum September 27th, 2008 at 5:33 pm

Gardi should have bought in moose last night after ace pitched 4th and pitch moose he will get his 20th win

  41. jennifer September 27th, 2008 at 5:34 pm

Mike didn’t want to get the win that way. So it is a moot point.

  42. jennifer September 27th, 2008 at 5:36 pm

No hitter going on against the Brew Crew. Will they be no hit twice in a season?

  43. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Ex-bookendis September 27th, 2008 at 5:36 pm

Shouldn’t have wasted Moose in that Pittsburgh start that got rained out…

  44. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Ex-bookendis September 27th, 2008 at 5:37 pm

jennifer: the Brewers were no hit before? Huh?

Lester no hit the Royals and Zambrano no hit the ‘stros…am I missing something?

If Cashman doesn’t come back, who’s out there who can come in as GM. Stick? Buck Showalter?

  47. UtilityMan(#33 for AROD in 09) September 27th, 2008 at 5:39 pm

    CashBum

I was thinking the same thing.

At this point,if I was Mike Mussina,I would have taken it.

The bullpen cost him at least 3 victories this year.

  48. Bob(The Original) September 27th, 2008 at 5:39 pm

Yankees.com has Moose/Wakefield listed up for the 1:35 game

  49. jennifer September 27th, 2008 at 5:40 pm

Oops maybe I am confused. CC had what he thought was a no hitter. But official scorer disagreed.

  50. UtilityMan(#33 for AROD in 09) September 27th, 2008 at 5:40 pm

    Rebecca

Good point…that was a victory in the making…and then the rains came.Second time wasnt so nice.

  51. Doreen September 27th, 2008 at 5:41 pm

The bullpen also saved ALL his victories. He has no CGs.

  52. jennifer September 27th, 2008 at 5:42 pm

Utility, Mike doesn’t seem to be angry about it. (at least he isn’t saying publicly)

“Said as far as I know I didn’t pitch any complete games so the pen helped me out in every single win. I couldn’t do it without them.”

But we know of a few games where the offense was offensive 2-1 game comes to mind. Or when Mo blew the game and the team went on to win it in extras.

  53. UtilityMan(#33 for AROD in 09) September 27th, 2008 at 5:42 pm

I could see Mussina pitch the first game…then letting Ponson mop up the season in the nightcap.

    Jennifer
CC dropped a dribbler up thirdbase line about 4-6 weeks ago, that the official scorer called a hit.

  54. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Ex-bookendis September 27th, 2008 at 5:42 pm

Doreen: Not true–Mo’s blown save came off of a Moose start.

    Bob: Yankees.com thinks optimistically!

  55. UtilityMan(#33 for AROD in 09) September 27th, 2008 at 5:44 pm

Speaking of CGs…when was the last time a Yankee starter had a CG???

  56. jennifer September 27th, 2008 at 5:47 pm

I think Wang had one this year.

  57. Timmy Lupus September 27th, 2008 at 5:48 pm

Wang had one on April 11th against the Sox in Fenway.

  58. bigjf September 27th, 2008 at 5:50 pm

I can care less and it doesn’t make things any easier on Boston, but why 2 tomorrow? Why make up today’s game? Other games in baseball have been canceled at this point in the season with no makeup being played. Is it strictly for attendance? These games mean nothing…

  59. Doreen September 27th, 2008 at 5:56 pm

    Rebecca -

You’re right. But I meant all his wins were with the help of the bullpen. The other person had already pointed out that bullpen blew 3 of his games.

  60. bodhisattva September 27th, 2008 at 6:04 pm

Cano, who had three exceptional seasons against one disappointing one, and who has a bat and glove for the ages, and is 26, is to be replaced by a 32-year old second baseman.

    Thanks, Tyler. You’re an embarrassment.

  61. Fredo Corleone September 27th, 2008 at 6:08 pm

Cano has a glove for the ages????

  62. Fredo Corleone September 27th, 2008 at 6:12 pm

“At this point,if I was Mike Mussina,I would have taken it.

The bullpen cost him at least 3 victories this year.”

Say what?? Mussina has averaged less than 6 innings per start this year. If he gets 20, he should be giving every member of the bullpen, that had to get him 9 outs per start, a tongue bath.

  63. Braintrust September 27th, 2008 at 11:25 pm

He’s right about pitcher’s in the AL East. Case in point Carl Pavano. Burnett proved he can pitch in the AL this year, but I have a feeling he’s staying with Toronto. Cano isn’t getting traded. He still has alot of promise, and I think he’ll get straightened out by next year. The big questions are a starter at the top of the rotation, first base, and center. If Giambi & Abreu are gone you need protection in the lineup for Arod. A healthy Matsui & Posada will help, but imagine Texiera hitting behind Arod in the 5 hole? But yeah, you’ll see a guy like Pavano hook up with an NL team next year, and win 12-14 games if he’s healthy. That’s why the Yanks can probably pull off a deal for Igawa this winter. He dominated AAA, but can’t pitch in the AL, let alone the AL Beast. He would be well suited for a NL West team. The thing with CC is that he’s pitching great in the NL, and he is a solid AL pitcher. But he took his lumps in the AL last year, especially in the playoffs. I think he’s going to want to stay in the NL, where it’s safe.

  64. zellyanks91 September 28th, 2008 at 1:17 am

    Let’s Go Moose!
