Ponson-Wakefield in Game 2

Meanwhile, the Yankees finally got around to hazing their rookies today. The went with The Village People as the theme. The cast of characters:

Alfredo Aceves as the Indian

Brett Gardner as the Construction Guy

Juan Miranda as the Policeman

Francisco Cervelli as the Biker

Humberto Sanchez as the Naval Officer

Dave Robertson as the Cowboy

They ran out of out of outfits for Phil Coke. The rookie were paraded down the concourse out to the bus. They’ll then have to walk part of the way back to the hotel and go out to dinner in the outfits.

As hazing goes, it was pretty tame. None of the outfits were particularly embarrassing.

No photos yet. It was too dark and rainy on the concourse.

UPDATE, 9:59 p.m.: There you go, AP snapped a shot.

haha, the Village People? I hope they make them sing YMCA in the restaurant. :)

  2. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Ex-bookendis September 27th, 2008 at 5:44 pm

Last year’s hazing was funnier, but then…last year was different.

Well, Dice-k is SO overdue for a loss.

  3. James (let's play 2!) September 27th, 2008 at 5:44 pm

Maybe if Moose doesn’t get the win in the 1st game..they can bring him in for an ining to get a win in the 2nd game!

Can’t wait to see some pics from the hazing.

  4. Brandon (We'll miss you Yankees Stadium !)..."Keep Manny away !" September 27th, 2008 at 5:45 pm

Phil Coke didn’t get hazed ! LOL oh man Humberto in the Navel police’s man’s uni..EWWWWWWWW…I’m going to look for pics.

“They’ll then have to walk part of the way back to the hotel and go out to dinner in the outfits.”

Isn’t it bad enough that they have to go out for dinner in Boston?

  6. Bob(The Original) September 27th, 2008 at 5:46 pm

    Yankees.com was wrong I guess.

That second game may go until after midnight with those two on the mound. lol

  7. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Ex-bookendis September 27th, 2008 at 5:47 pm

Bob–imagine that second game with a rain delay…

  8. mel September 27th, 2008 at 5:47 pm

I think it’s kind of mean to have Alfredo dress up as the chief. Coke should’ve done that and Alfredo could’ve been Zorro. :)

I was gonna say, it’s Boston, will anyone notice anything different seeing them dressed like that?

    LOL

    Bad day for Cashman

    Santanta- CGSO

Ted Lilly working on a no-no.

hope he comes back, lets keep our players!

  11. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Ex-bookendis September 27th, 2008 at 5:52 pm

Cashman can sleep easier. No no-no.

  12. Bob(The Original) September 27th, 2008 at 5:55 pm

    No hitter gone.

Let’s get rid of the shutout now.

  13. mike September 27th, 2008 at 5:57 pm

tough break for mussina. he sure is going to have to work to get #20. hopefully the offense helps him out..

  14. hobbie September 27th, 2008 at 5:58 pm

with a better outfield the cubs Lilly might still have his no no. I just got back from the Santana game.

  15. Bob(The Original) September 27th, 2008 at 6:01 pm

    No hitter gone.

Let’s get rid of the shutout now.

Ok, now let’s make sure he doesn’t get the win. :)

  16. harwood September 27th, 2008 at 6:09 pm

At least Sheets just got cheaper today..

  17. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Ex-bookendis September 27th, 2008 at 6:13 pm

I don’t want Sheets. Way shady injury history and he’s only pitched in the NL.

  18. Whitey Fraud September 27th, 2008 at 6:16 pm

Isn’t it bad enough that they have to go out for dinner in Boston?

    What?!?

The fans are imbeciles but there are some fantastic restaurants in that city and beyond.

    Jeez!

  19. jennifer September 27th, 2008 at 6:17 pm

Funny line about having to go out to dinner in Boston.

But agreed, the costumes were pretty tame. Last years was great!!

    LOL The Village People

I had amazing food in Boston

  23. Duke Sims September 27th, 2008 at 6:21 pm

Is the second game gonna be on ESPN?

  24. Ed - looking foward to 2009 September 27th, 2008 at 6:23 pm

I had amazing food in Boston

I once purposely travelled all the way there just to have lobster. lol =)

  25. Fredo Corleone September 27th, 2008 at 6:25 pm

Twins are starting to feel it a bit.

Duke, no ESPN game tomorrow night as I understand it.

  30. jennifer September 27th, 2008 at 6:28 pm

Now 4-3 Cubbies. I just collectively heard a bunch of Met fans cursing.

  31. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and I still believe in Phil Hughes September 27th, 2008 at 6:29 pm

    4-3 now
    oh wow

  32. Ed - looking foward to 2009 September 27th, 2008 at 6:29 pm

I was thinking why the hell did Fielder swung at the first pitch, but at least it paid off.

  33. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Real baseball fans vote September 27th, 2008 at 6:32 pm

Oy, JJ, you’re breaking my heart.

  34. SMITHY September 27th, 2008 at 6:32 pm

    Cubs Win!

    Theeeeeeeee Cubs Win!

  35. jennifer September 27th, 2008 at 6:33 pm

    4-3 top 9 cubbies.

  36. jennifer September 27th, 2008 at 6:34 pm

Since when does a game end in the 8th inning?

  37. Doreen September 27th, 2008 at 6:35 pm

    Brad Lidge – 2 on 1 out top 9.

  38. Doreen September 27th, 2008 at 6:35 pm

    4-3.

  39. jennifer September 27th, 2008 at 6:36 pm

Lidge is trying to blow it.

  40. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Real baseball fans vote September 27th, 2008 at 6:36 pm

Oy, Lidge, now would be a really bad time for your first blown save of the year

  41. SMITHY September 27th, 2008 at 6:36 pm

    Oy, I’m wrong.

  42. Doreen September 27th, 2008 at 6:37 pm

    I mean, it was 4-2, now it’s 4-3, 2 on, 1 out, 0-2 to Guzman.

  43. Doreen September 27th, 2008 at 6:38 pm

    Bases loaded for Nationals.

  44. SMITHY September 27th, 2008 at 6:38 pm

    Wait, I’m right!

    Cubs Win!!!!!!!!

  45. jennifer September 27th, 2008 at 6:39 pm

bases loaded one out! Now 6-3 Cubbies

  46. Doreen September 27th, 2008 at 6:39 pm

Almost a wild pitch by Lidge!

  47. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Real baseball fans vote September 27th, 2008 at 6:40 pm

    HEY CONGRATULATIONS PHILADELPHIA!

  48. Doreen September 27th, 2008 at 6:40 pm

    Phillies win.

DP – good play for Rollins, lucky for Lidge.

  49. jennifer September 27th, 2008 at 6:40 pm

Phillies win!! Mets lose the division two years in a row!!!

  50. Ed - looking foward to 2009 September 27th, 2008 at 6:40 pm

    Phillies clinched the NL east.

  51. mel September 27th, 2008 at 6:41 pm

    What a play by Rollins!

Congrats to the Phillies with back to back division crowns.

  52. jennifer September 27th, 2008 at 6:43 pm

Okay so if the Mets win the Wild card who do they face? The Cubbies?

    So matchups would be?

    Phillies-Dodgers? GO PHILLY!!!!!
    Brewers/Mets-Cubbies?

  53. Doreen September 27th, 2008 at 6:44 pm

Can you believe they’re talking about LIdge and KRod for MVPs. NOOOOOO! If Mariano has never gotten one, these two bozos certainly don’t deserve one!!!!!

  54. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Real baseball fans vote September 27th, 2008 at 6:45 pm

    jennifer: Either

    Phillies-Dodgers/Mets-Cubs

    Or

    Phillies-Cubs
    Brewers-Dodgers

Teams from the same division can’t play each other in the first round.

  55. Patrick Bateman September 27th, 2008 at 6:47 pm

Why doesn’t Mussina go up against Wakefield instead of Dice-BB? Probably a better matchup since the Yankees have seen Wakefield more.

  56. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Real baseball fans vote September 27th, 2008 at 6:48 pm

Patrick, because of the weather forecast they might not be able to play both games.

  57. Ed - looking foward to 2009 September 27th, 2008 at 6:51 pm

is it bad to wish Wood would blow this game so the Brewers wins and cut down the magic number?

  58. you gotta have faith (well, theres always next year...)(MOOSE FOR PRESIDENT!) September 27th, 2008 at 6:51 pm

    7-3 cubbies

  59. jennifer September 27th, 2008 at 6:51 pm

Brewers are collapsing. I think Met fans need to send the Brewers GM a fruit basket.

  60. jennifer September 27th, 2008 at 6:52 pm

Who is pitching tomorrow for the Mets? I know the Marlins would like nothing better than to send the Mets home two years in a row. But the Brewers must come back and win today!

  61. Joe September 27th, 2008 at 6:53 pm

For someone who’s unfamilar with the current standings, what’s the Mets’ playoff prospect like?

  62. you gotta have faith (well, theres always next year...)(MOOSE FOR PRESIDENT!) September 27th, 2008 at 6:53 pm

if the brew crew losses tomorrow is goin to be very interesting

both the brewers and the mets have to do or die

i say the mets loose it, and the brew crew wins the wildcard!

  63. you gotta have faith (well, theres always next year...)(MOOSE FOR PRESIDENT!) September 27th, 2008 at 6:55 pm

    jennifer:

    oliver perez is pitching

  64. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Real baseball fans vote September 27th, 2008 at 6:55 pm

    Perez tomorrow for the Mets.

  65. Doreen September 27th, 2008 at 6:56 pm

    Mets W, Brewers W – tie
    Mets L, Brewers L -tie
    Mets L – Brewers W – Brewers
    Mets W – Brewers L – Mets

Was it Brigadoon where the town appeared every 100 years?

  67. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and I still believe in Phil Hughes September 27th, 2008 at 6:57 pm

Who is pitching tomorrow for the Brewers?

  68. Doreen September 27th, 2008 at 6:57 pm

The Cubs could be like the mythical town of Brigadoon.

  69. Doreen September 27th, 2008 at 6:58 pm

CC is pitching for the Brewers tomorrow on 3 days’ rest.

  70. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Real baseball fans vote September 27th, 2008 at 6:58 pm

    SA: Best guess CC. Again.

  71. Doreen September 27th, 2008 at 7:01 pm

It’s definitely CC. He was charting the pitches.

  72. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and I still believe in Phil Hughes September 27th, 2008 at 7:01 pm

Oh thanks! That’s right! Big CC

  73. jennifer September 27th, 2008 at 7:02 pm

What happens with tomorrows Yankee game? Will both be on Yes? Fox was supposed to have todays game, but it was of course rained out. Do they now lose rights to it?

  74. Bob(The Original) September 27th, 2008 at 7:03 pm

    I’m torn.

I don’t want the Mets to go the playoffs, but I don’t want the Brewers to keep abusing CC’s arm if we’re gonna end up with him.

    lol

  75. you gotta have faith (well, theres always next year...)(MOOSE FOR PRESIDENT!) September 27th, 2008 at 7:04 pm

good question jennifer i was wondering the same thing

i really hope moose wins tomorrow :)

  76. jennifer September 27th, 2008 at 7:04 pm

    Okay found this on yankees.com

    @ BOS
    7:35 PM
    MLB.TV
    MAKEUP OF PPD ON 9/27

Does that mean it won’t be on tv? If not it is bs, even though the yankees are done, I want to have the option of watching.

  77. Doreen September 27th, 2008 at 7:05 pm

    Good question, Jennifer.

YESnetwork.com has both listed for tomorrow.

  78. Bob(The Original) September 27th, 2008 at 7:08 pm

I’m sure YES will pick the game up.

Although, I don’t imagine it being very fun to watch.

Neither team is gonna want to be playing.

After watching Moose in the afternoon, I think I’ll have seen all I need to see of the Yanks for this season.

  79. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Real baseball fans vote September 27th, 2008 at 7:08 pm

I believe YES is showing both tomorrow.

  81. jennifer September 27th, 2008 at 7:09 pm

  82. jennifer September 27th, 2008 at 7:09 pm

Thanks Doreen, I would imagine yesnetwork is correct.

  83. Ed - looking foward to 2009 September 27th, 2008 at 7:10 pm

I’m guessing Rotoworld could foresee the future of the Yanks acquiring Ricky Nolasco of the Marlins this offseason.

Ricky Nolasco limited the Red Sox to two earned runs over seven innings Saturday but the Marlins couldn’t put a run on the board against Johan Santana.

Since when did the Mets became the Red Sox? lol….

  84. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Real baseball fans vote September 27th, 2008 at 7:11 pm

Ed: Mets, Red Sox, same thing.

  85. Ed - looking foward to 2009 September 27th, 2008 at 7:13 pm

Rebecca: both Wild Card winners? hmm…lol

  86. Doreen September 27th, 2008 at 7:13 pm

SEriously, I don’t think they’re going to play either game tomorrow. I’ve been looking at the radar all day. The system runs N-S and it’s moving very, very slowly almost due north right over Boston the whole way. Unless it speeds up or a wind blows it east, MAYBE one game gets played, but not until late. The system has barely moved since I’ve been tracking it (10 am)

  87. Doreen September 27th, 2008 at 7:14 pm

I should add that right now, the very tail end of the weather system is east of Washington, DC (over the Atlantic)

  88. jennifer September 27th, 2008 at 7:20 pm

  105. rackem September 27th, 2008 at 7:50 pm

Kind of surprised Girardi didn’t pair up Mussina with Wakefield to help him get his 20th win. Yanks have a much better chance winning against him than Dice-K.

Girardi is so stupid… yeah, match him up against a guy who is 18-2 with a 2.8 ERA when you have the option of pitching him against the hittable Wakefield.

  121. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and I still believe in Phil Hughes September 27th, 2008 at 8:35 pm

I just saw some pictures of the Padres Rookies dressed up like Hooters Girls.

    I think I need therapy

  122. R-Tek September 27th, 2008 at 8:37 pm

Santana was pure guts today. I was against the trade at first, but damn after watching him today and really all season up close, this guy is a STUD. Takes the ball, will throw 130 pitches, pitch on 3 days rest, a competitive guy who is built to pitch in NY.

We traded for hasbeens, NL pitchers, injury prone pitchers etc. all these years and when we finally had a chance to get the perfect ace, we screwed it up.

Frustrating, but nothing we can do.

  123. melkyisgod September 27th, 2008 at 8:38 pm

“Santana would have looked real nice in navy blue pinstripes.

    Rule #1
    Don’t overrate your prospects

    Rule #2
    Get over it”

Why should any of us “get over it”? That is why we follow the game. That is why are fans. That is why we check blogs constantly. We second guess. We assume. We think we can do a better job.

The Santana non trade is important. Telling people to “get over it” is ridiculous and lacking any intelligent insight.

If you are going to defend the non trade, defend the fact that Hughes may be a #2. Don’t tell people to “get over it”.

SHows you have no intelligence and can’t back anything up if you go that route.

The no Santana trade should be a nice little warning to the front office.

    Don’t overrated your own prospects.

They thought Hughes was an ace. Kennedy a #2. Melky a starting CF.

That scares me more than anything this year. The fact that they messed up that bad and bet this season and next on that.

Santana is not here and is not coming here, thus get over it and move on.

If you can’t do that but continue to whine about Santana not being here-hey go ahead and waste your time and energy.

Here’s a fact-we don’t know how Hughes will be in the future: good or bad. We need to have patience and just see what happens.

patience? What from him has made you think he was worth keeping instead of getting a lefty in his prime ace?

    Really?

  134. Jose September 27th, 2008 at 8:49 pm

The most alarming thing is how badly they overrated Kennedy and how they had no reinforcements. I love how every guy who can’t break a paint of glass with the FB is compared to Maddux.

Atleast Kennedy got exposed as a fraud right away and even Cashman had seen enough. It speaks volume that this was supposed to be a transition year dedicated to the young guys development and we had Rasner and Ponson in our rotation all summer.

Hell, they let pathetic Carl Pavano up his value for next year on our watch rather than give the young kids a shot.

  135. E-Rod September 27th, 2008 at 8:50 pm

Why don’t they just scratch Mussina or say Mussina was stuck in traffic and arrived late and switch him with Ponson at the last minute?

  136. jennifer September 27th, 2008 at 8:52 pm

I don’t think you have to pick now who starts. They can decide tomorrow right before the game as long as the lineup wasn’t handed in.

  137. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and I still believe in Phil Hughes September 27th, 2008 at 8:54 pm

patience? What from him has made you think he was worth keeping instead of getting a lefty in his prime ace?

    Really?

Have you ever ever seen him pitch and I’m not talking just this year when he struggled at times?

So should we write off a 22 year old pitcher?

    Do you have any patience?

Do you realize it was more than just Hughes in the deal and that players were changing? If so, please tell me all those players that were at one time involved. Let’s see of you get the answer right.

You really think Santana would have made a big difference for this team this year? Really? Would he somehow be in the lineup every night and help get those RISP home?

Do you realize maybe it’s time to move on, cuz he’s not coming here.

There is no official picking process. The manager can throw anyone he wants out on the mound come gametime.

  139. Bob(The Original) September 27th, 2008 at 8:59 pm

My God some of you are thick.

If it was a Santana for Hughes/IPK/Melky without the requirement of having to sign Santana to a long term deal for huge $$$, Cashman would have done the deal in a heartbeat.

Giving up the prospects and the $$$$ was the issue. Santana would not have gotten the Yanks into the playoffs this season despite what some of you think.

Now we still have the prospects and can use the $150 mil we saved on Santana to sign other FA pitchers.

It’s really not that hard to understand.

Now everyone that is Pro Hughes will admit that the farm system is going pretty well and will only get better right?

And you will concede that is most stocked in RHP, right?

So why wouldn’t you part with 2 of those arms for an in his prime lefty who wants to pitch in NY?

Plus, it saves you two draft picks when you sign a FA and you know the player wants to pitch in NY and has had great success in the AL.

It’s not like we are talking trade Joba here. A legit top of the rotation guy.

Yep, Girardi is really stupid for that one. Although in Girardi’s defense Dice K has made 5 starts against the Yankees and he has an ERA of 6.30. So then again maybe Girardi isn’t so stupid after all.

$$? We are the Yankees. We have 100 mill coming off the payroll. We are desperate for an ace. We may give Sabathia 150 mill. And maybe Burnett 125. Money???

And we won 90 games with Wang missing 3/4 of the yr and Joba getting hurt and Posada missing most of the yr. Think about that.

  146. LLIME September 27th, 2008 at 9:11 pm

    Exactly

It was the financial concern more than it was giving up Hughes. Hughes was ON THE TABLE for the Twins’ taking, it was the 3rd player in the deal that was the stalemate.

If Santana was under control, for even a couple of years, they do that trade in a heartbeat. It was money more than Hughes.

From the NY Times baseball blog:

The rookies posed together in front of the clubhouse TV, as teammates gathered around snapping photos with their cellphones. Then they were forced to walk through the concourse at Fenway Park –- that is, through a sea of howling Red Sox fans –- on the way to the team bus.

The prank was the idea of Rob Cucuzza, the clubhouse manager, but the always-zany Jason Giambi took credit for the outfits.

“I told them they can only borrow them,” Giambi said. “I’m going to use them later.”

    Oh Jason. lol :P

Chicago is on a 4 game (soon to be 5) losing streak, the Twins have lost 2.

By the end of this game, the Sox will be 86-74, Twins 87-74.

If both teams win or if both teams lose, the Sox have to play their make up game.

If Chicago wins and Minny loses, Sox play make up game.

The only scenario that avoids the makeup game is a Minny win with Chicago loss.

“Giving up the prospects and the $$$$ was the issue. Santana would not have gotten the Yanks into the playoffs this season despite what some of you think.

Now we still have the prospects and can use the $150 mil we saved on Santana to sign other FA pitchers.”

I tend to agree with that given how sluggish the Yankees offense was for most of the year but we really don’t know what impact Santana would have had here. Certainly the hitters ould have been more relaxed during his games, he would have given more innings which would have protected the bullpen etc etc.

My issue is that Santana was worth the $150 million. He’s one of the few players who is. I’m not even sure CC is.

The Yankees needed an ace before the season to take pressure off the kids at vthe back of the rotation. When the best pitcher in baseball is available, and you’re the NY Yankees you need to make more than just a half-hearted effort to get him.

Keep in mind that the benefit of keeping Hughes was that he made less money and was under team control. The Yanks lost one year of team control this year and got no wins from Hughes.

I like Hughes and am glad he is still a Yankee. I think he has great potential, but also lament not getting Santana. But it’s over and done with, and now rlly all tha can be done is to look to the future and hope CC signs here.

  194. Betsy September 27th, 2008 at 10:19 pm

Cashman did not want to give up Hughes, period. It was a combination of the $$$ and the prospects that turned the Yankees off, period, but it still came down to the fact that, for Cash, Hughes was off the table. If folks don’t want to believe it, than that’s their option. The lack of baseball knowledge by some people just boggles the mind. They just continue to show off how little they know by insisting that a 22 year old who was the #1 pitching prospect in baseball is overrated and overhyped before he has even had a chance to prove himself. Baseball history is littered with hundreds of pitchers who struggled early in their careers before finding their groove, but I forget -Americans are lousy with history. Not only that, but it seems they want Phil to fail – that is the most shameful thing of all. Fortunately(unlike Ian), Phil doesn’t read the boards or the newspapers and he has no clue that there are so-called fans out there that have it out for him at age 22 because he’s not already a Cy Young award winner.

  197. Duke Sims September 27th, 2008 at 10:23 pm

well, considering that they will now have to pay Sabathia even more than Santana got, it probably was a mistake to not get Johan. If the bullpen didn’t blow so many games for him, he’d be in the Cy Young hunt again.

  198. Duke Sims September 27th, 2008 at 10:25 pm

Th Yankees could have gotten Santana without giving up Hughes. Look at what the Mets gave up. The yanks chose to take themselves out of the Johan chase. That is the bototm line. There was no specific offer turned down by the Twins. Once the Yanks were out of the bidding they were forced to take a lesser deal, which is what they got.

  199. Tom K September 27th, 2008 at 10:28 pm

    Betsy –

Yep, it most definitely came down to Phil Hughes being included in the deal.

The fact of the matter is that the Yankees were hoping and praying that the Twins would hold on to Johan and just go for it this year (in retrospect, that probably would have been their wisest decision; the draft pick will probably end up being worth more than what the Mets gave up). Anyway, the Yankees would have allowed Johan to name his price on the free agent market. It just didn’t work out – the Twins’ decided that Johan must go.

Will the Yankees regret the decision? We’ll see – as of this moment, of course there has to be a regret or two; Hughes didn’t win a game while Johan has made a run at a Cy Young Award. That’s pretty compelling evidence for the “We wanted Johan!” crowd.

Will that still be the case a few years down the road? We really have no idea at this point.

As you said, MLB history is loaded with great pitchers who started off terribly. But people just don’t want to hear about it – oh well.

  200. Doreen September 27th, 2008 at 10:28 pm

Yeah, when Hughes became unavailable, they asked for Wang.

The Red Sox walked away, too.

The Twins were playing the Sox and Yankees against each other. At some point in time the Twins could have had Ellsbury or Lester. They chose to play games and game away with the lesser deal because they went too far.

I guess they could have made no deal at all, but they didn’t want to lose Santana for even less than they got.

  201. Duke Sims September 27th, 2008 at 10:31 pm

I wonder why Minny didn’t wait till July 31 of this year to deal Johan. Wouldn’t they have been able to have gotten more? Imagine if they’d waited, once Wang got hurt.

Pettitte decided to return and resigned with the Yankees 12/12/07. They already had resigned Posada, A-Rod signed one day later and Rivera 4 days after that. Santana wasn’t traded until 1/29/08. Once Pettitte decided to come back and they signed Posada, A-Rod, and Rivera, to the richest contracts for their position in baseball history, Santana became a long term luxury with a concern about diminished velocity and increases homerun rate.

Had Pettitte decided to retire, we might have kept up interest in Santana.

You realize if you had Santana at the front, there would be no kids at the back?

That all depended on what the trade was though. If Hughes was included, there’d still have been Kennedy and possibly Joba at the back of the rotation. That would have taken some of the pressure off those two. The Yankees weren’t trading all their young pitching for Santana.

I didn’t want to include Hughes in a trade for Santana, and would have seen if the Twins bit on Cano as the centerpiece of the trade before giving up Hughes. I think there was a way to keep Hughes and still ge Santana. But even if there wasn’t, Hughes is a 22 year old stud prospect, Santana is the best pitcher in the game today and in his prime. It’s not like Hughes would have been given up for a mediocre player.

I just meant that I have seen them both. If you made a Venn diagram of people who have seen most/all episodes of “Gilligan’s Island” and people who have seen “The Wannsee Conference”, I’m not sure how big the intersection would be.

Furthermore, if you made a Venn diagram to illustrate the intersection of people who have seen most/all episodes of “Gilligan’s Island”, have seen “The Wannsee Conference”, and own the Marine Research record which has the song “Venn Diagram” on it, that intersection may be smaller still. If you also add people who have purchased Moose Bars, the entire intersection may be comprised of me.

Sounds like Joe needs a tutoring session in Managerial Skills 101, with a specialization in Human Relations. I had no idea that he basically ignored his coachig staff, best friends Meachem and Harkey excepted. Also, I don’t blame Damon for being hurt; it’s ridiculous that Joe didn’t tell Johnny to his face.

I really, really like Joe, but I’m beginning to wonder if he’s got the right stuff as a manager. I know he’s very smart, but can a leopard change his spots? I don’t think so. I don’t think he should be Joe Torre or anyone but himself, but I’m wondering if he has the right temperment to be leading a team.

Brackman’s settling now it took awhile. It looks like he has no control on the knuckle curve tonight hence the balls in the dirt, and after 2 IP he has allowed 4 runs but key stat 3 swinging strikeouts.

  354. Clint September 28th, 2008 at 1:45 am

I, too have really soured on Joe this year. I wanted him here but now it is looking like a mistake.

He deserves another year for sure to implement these necessary changes but after that, all bets are off. If he doesn’t improve in the areas he has to improve in, then he needs to go.

I thought that a lot of the problems were overblown and were fabricated by the Francessas of the world to make Torre look good but the more that has come out these last couple of days, the more it does look like there was a lot of chaos surrounding the team.

  361. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en... let's try '09! September 28th, 2008 at 1:49 am

It’s just good that Brackman is back on the mound. It will take him a bit to settle in, but the potential is there. Command of your pitches isn’t always a light switch that you can turn on and off.

And by the way, even the St. Louis Rams >>>> New Facebook. :)

  362. Sea Net September 28th, 2008 at 1:49 am

It is not a coincidence that Girardi only speaks with Harkey and Meachum– the only 2 guys Girardi got to handpick. Thats what happens when your GM creates your staff for you. Long/Pena were from Torre’s staff and Rob Thompson is a buddy of Cashman who has been in the org, he got the job as reward for paying his dues not because he earned it.

Hal needs to sit down with Girardi and sort a lot of these issues out.

Hanley Ramirez on Friday walked up to all the star old time Mets players from the 86′ team after taking batting practice

“There will be no playoff baseball in NY” – Hanley Ramirez

  365. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Real baseball fans vote September 28th, 2008 at 1:53 am

Brandon: Hysterical, but bulletin board material for the Mets. Shouldn’t have said it.

  366. mel September 28th, 2008 at 1:54 am

Anyone who criticizes someone anonymously to the press is weak.

  367. COL 88 September 28th, 2008 at 1:54 am

Guys, the HWL is not about results. It’s about development and a lot of times a ‘reward’ for players who did well throughout the year (Jackson last year, Romine this year) and for college guys to get innings and get their feet wet in competitive baseball. It’s for pitchers to work on things, it is a pitcher’s league.

The AFL is more about results, thats why we sent Hughes, Sanchez, etc. there

  368. Brandon (We'll miss you Yankees Stadium !)..."Keep Manny away !" September 28th, 2008 at 1:57 am

mel it wasn’t anonymous, he went up to each of the Mets old time players/ beatwriters and the first words he told them were those words and then he walked away.

This is definitely bulletin board material, but I think Hanley stuck his foot in his mouth this time.

  369. Jose September 28th, 2008 at 1:58 am

The Mets have no heart (or bullpen), not even bulletin board material can save them.

The only reason they will make the playoffs is because Milwaukee is just as bad. Both only have one legit starter and no bullpen.

I do think both will win tomorrow though, setting up a riveting showdown at Shea between Dave Bush and Nelson Figuroa.

  370. mel September 28th, 2008 at 1:59 am

    Brandon,

Talking about the article linked by Steinbrenner at 11:45 pm.

  371. Quilvio Imposter September 28th, 2008 at 2:02 am

Yankees need to find out who is the disgruntled player spreading these anonymous quotes and get rid of him.

  372. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en... let's try '09! September 28th, 2008 at 2:02 am

Rebecca: Hey! I’ve been well, just busy. Vince Young is a VERY interesting case, we don’t need him at the moment, but the prospect of continuing to win with Kerry Collins under center is pretty scary. As long as the defense can carry them through, the Titans will be fine.

That’s the first that I have heard about the Hanley Ramirez quote. In a way it’s good and in a way it’s bad.

Quotes like that exhibit the self-confidence that players MUST have, but they also fire up your opponents.

  373. Brandon (We'll miss you Yankees Stadium !)..."Keep Manny away !" September 28th, 2008 at 2:02 am

Jose the Mets have heart, the BP is just…eh…but I think Hanley should have stayed shut on Friday, because now the Mets have a reason to get up.

  374. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Real baseball fans vote September 28th, 2008 at 2:03 am

mel: It’s certainly interesting and it’s not a good way to go into the offseason if it’s just lingering there in the clubhouse unaddressed.

  375. steve September 28th, 2008 at 2:04 am

Thats what happen when you have a team full of vets/paychecks. they want to win now and when they don’t, they get cranky and whine to the press. they cant handle losing so now they are trying to make joe the scapegoat

  376. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Real baseball fans vote September 28th, 2008 at 2:05 am

I dunno, I see Hanley’s quote and I’m a Met and it is utter motivation for me.

But then I’m easy to motivate.

  377. mel September 28th, 2008 at 2:05 am

Thanks, Javy Guerra. Whoever you are. :?

  378. Betsy September 28th, 2008 at 2:08 am

Then the Yankees should have sent Phil to Hawaii…why do they care about results with him? He just needs to pitch and get his stuff down consistently, not worry about results.

  379. Oddessy September 28th, 2008 at 2:09 am

    Who are supplying these quotes?
Mussina and Damon talk a lot but both have supported Joe publicly. Mussina did in the post article and Damon did in this recent article today.

Giambi doesn’t seem like that type of guy. Andy, Rivera, Jeter obviously are not doing it.

Most of the Latin players outside of Abreu don’t really understand/speak English that well anyway, do they really know what an anonymous quote is? I doubt they would risk it.

You know Posada is behind some of them. Could A-Rod be behind some of them too? What about a guy like Joba? Molina?

  380. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Real baseball fans vote September 28th, 2008 at 2:11 am

oddessy: I would suspect coaches or clubhouse staff before many of the players.

You know it’s not Damon, Moose or Jeter.

  381. Jorge Tabata September 28th, 2008 at 2:15 am

Chris Britton is giving the anonymous quotes.

  382. COL 88 September 28th, 2008 at 2:23 am

I don’t think Hughes qualifies for Hawaii considering he has MLB service time. Hawaii is mainly for A-Ball players and guys just out of college.

The AFL is a hitters league and every ballpark is a bandbox. Teams send their best hitting prospects there and the weather is warm and dry and the ball will fly, so it will be a good challenge. Not conducive to working on things, he has to be at his best and the Yankees want to see what he is like against the best.

If they wanted him to work on things in a stress-free environment, they would have sent him to Dominican instructs or something under the watchful eyes of the team. But they obviously want to evaluate him and get innings at the same time so they went him to the AFL.

  383. Brandon (We'll miss you Yankees Stadium !)..."Keep Manny away !" September 28th, 2008 at 2:24 am

Nothing could top last year’s rookie hazing with Joba as the lion, Hughes as the tinman, Kennedy as dorthy, Duncan as the scarecrow etc. that was perfect.

This year we have a bunch of male strippers. It is not a coincidence that their outfits are conspicuously small by about 2-3 sizes.

    Mussina on possible retirement:

It has been 105 years since a pitcher won 19 or more games and voluntarily retired healthy.

Mike Mussina seems to be considering it.

Mussina on Sunday will attempt to become a 20-game winner for the first time in his career, starting for the Yankees in the first game of a season-ending, day-night doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox.

“It’s a significant number,” he said, “but after playing this long and winning all these games, if I don’t win (today), then has it been bad, has it been lousy, has it been unsuccessful? No.

“It’d be a lot of fun to win it.”

Mussina, who turns 40 on Dec. 8, must then decide if he wants to keep playing, and he sounds torn. Earlier this year, he told at least one confidante that this would be his final season.

He said yesterday the Yankees are his first choice, but his decision will rest on his family’s concerns and whether he feels he can play three more seasons.

“If I’m in for one, I’m in for three,” Mussina said.
His reasoning: He could retire with 269 or 270 career wins. But if he gets significantly closer to the 300-win milestone, it would be difficult to stop without pursuing that.

But Mussina also likes his quiet life in Montoursville, Pa., with his wife and three children.

“They’re probably leaning toward me going home,” he said. “My wife would have liked me to retire about five years ago. But ultimately, it’s still up to me.

if the yankees were a hurricane, they’d only be a category 1 . they would be, what is called, not avery well organized hurricane.

the reason that i’m making this observation is, here on cape cod, we have been warned by the weather prognosticators that wed be getting steady 50 mph winds this morning. as usual,i “battened down the hatches” just in case.

i can’t tell you how disappointing it is to wake up to 5-7 mph winds. where’s the drama, the excitement? well, that’s kind of like the yankee year of 2008. cashman led us to expect that the yankees would be at least a category 3 hurricane baseball team ( category 5 would be #27) making the playoffs. he was confident because he had a “PLAN”.

his forecast was heavy winds that would knock down the fences and young pitchers who would blow away the competition. what we got was 5-7mph winds and a very disorganized hurricane of a team.

you call this a hurricane? cashman’s hot air is more of a tropical depression.

( oh, and i just found out that the meteorologist for the national weather service for the cape cod area is named charlie cashman, brian’s 2nd cousin first removed. turns out the cashman family goes way back in the forecasting business )

  396. Doreen September 28th, 2008 at 8:41 am

The Star Ledger article written by Ed Price. (First posted here by Hank Steinbrenner) – I read it this morning in the paper (how do you folks stay awake so late???).

First, I don’t like un-named sources when it comes to team sports. If you want to help, and you’re in a position to do so, you talk to the people who can actually do something to improve the situation – your manager, the GM, not the media. I think it is cowardly and skeezy. I think if a reporter asks you such a question, you tell the reporter it’s not for open discussion in a newspaper.

While it’s interesting that Joe Girardi may have bruised a few egos, most notably Johnny Damon’s back in August – I was under the impression, and correct me if I’m wrong – that he and Johnny Damon talked this out subsequently are the situation was smoothed over. So if you’re going to write that it was a situation Girardi bungled, then it’s only fair to write that it was also a situation Girardi addressed after the fact with the player and things are now cool.

I also am under no illusions that every player is going to like every manager. And no player is gong to be happy with every decision a manager makes. And sometimes a manager is going to make mistakes. Heck, I’ve even read there were some players that didn’t like Joe Torre.

As for relying too heavily on his hand-picked coaches, I suppose that is natural, but again, it sure looked to me and sounded to me that he had a good working relationship with Dave Eiland. But that wasn’t mentioned in the article. In any event, I think one of the changes to come this off-season is a hard look at that coaching staff in order to make improvements there.

I dont’t think the player was Posada. Heck he’s pretty open, number one. And number two, I think he’d talk directly to Girardi. Couldn’t really say about any of the other names floated.

I think we can all agree, without having read that article, that Joe Girardi indeed has some learning to do. He’s admitted as much. Pointing out some areas of weakness, well, there’s nothing wrong with that. That is of interest to the fans. I guess what I object to most is reliance on “unnamed players” or “unnamed sources.” So the knock is not on Ed Price so much as the players/coaches/whoever who did not go on the record. I don’t see how you help the situation in this manner.

I have to confess that I am not a big fan of Ed Price’s coverage of the Yankees and never have been. He’s got an edge to his newpaper stories that rubs me the wrong way. Others manage to get the same point across in their stories as he does without being as contentious in tone. Pete may have his fun with sarcasm in this blog, but he doesn’t do the same in his newspaper columns. (I do not regularly read the Post or Daily News, so they may be the same as Ed Price, I don’t know.)

  402. SJ44 September 28th, 2008 at 9:12 am

I am not a huge Ed Price fan. Mainly because he doesn’t bring any interesting angles to his stories. Just a personal taste thing on my end.

Re: the Girardi story though, its pretty much spot on.

Only problem is, Pete and Tyler Kepner have pretty much written the same stuff since July about Girardi. This is not “new news”.

I think all of it boils down to a simple premise. The transition from Torre to Girardi was MUCH more difficult than anybody envisioned this year. I think even Randy Levine, a staunch Torre hater, would admit as much if he wants to be honest about the situation.

We, myself included, shouldn’t be surprised that it was a tough transition. Did it keep the Yankees out of the playoffs? I don’t think so. With the injuries and inconsistent play, these guys didn’t play well enough to go to the playoffs, regardless of who is sitting in the managers office.

Its not like these bouts of ineffectiveness weren’t in place under Torre the last 3-4 years. They were. They just didn’t last as long as they did this year.

Does that mean that Joe Girardi is a bad guy or a bad manager and will never improve? Of course not.

Its just means that, as is the case with the players, the manager has some improvement to do in the off-season. He knows that and I believe he will be better in the gig next year.

Folks can’t overeact on either side of this issue. There were moments this year where the relationship between Girardi and the players was pretty bad. A lot of that is because guys who have never struggled for this long a period were struggling and had no idea how to handle it.

It boils down to consistency. When you are coach/manager of a team, you have to bring a steady, consistent manner to the table. If you are overly enthusiastic or overly negative, you don’t succeed. At times this year, Girardi was both and it did hurt the team.

Once he found his sea legs, and became more consistent in the way he dealt with matters inside the clubhouse, the players bought in. Damon included.

They had a pretty big blowup over the stuff in Minnesota. In the end, Damon is now one of Girardi’s biggest allies in the locker room. That’s a positive step in the right direction for Girardi.

Experience does matter in these things.

One of the smartest things Joe Torre did when he took over the Yankees was to lean on “Buck’s guys” for support. Guys like David Cone and Paul O’Neill played big roles in establishing Torre in the locker room with the other guys. They got the guys to buy into what Torre was looking to do.

That comes with experience. Joe was smart enough to know what to do in order to get the respect of the guys. I think folks forget just how popular Buck was with the players. Except for the rings, Buck was as popular with the players as Torre ever was.

It took Girardi longer (this is where his lack of experience hurt him a bit, IMO) to get the core guys to buy into what he was doing.

Girardi has a lot of good qualities that he brings to the job. He just has to clean up some of the stuff he does that brings his good qualities down.

That will happen because, IMO, he’s too smart a guy not to evolve. It just takes time.

The Rays/Sox season head to head record gives the Rays the edge in the case of a tie.

  404. Bronx Jeers September 28th, 2008 at 9:19 am

    Doreen,

The only time teams play each other in a 1 game playoff is if an actual position in the playoffs is at stake. Since playoffs are not at stake for Tampa and Sox, their record against each other serves as the tiebreaker. I guess Tampa won the season series so in essence, even if they end up tied, Tampa wins the division. If Minny or White sox had won the wild card, then A Tampa-Sox tie would have resulted in a playoff game tomorrow.

If both Mets and Brewers win today, there will be a playoff at Shea tomorrow as they are competing for the last playoff position available.

Totally agree about Girardi and like you said this stuff has pretty much been written about before my only problem wih the piece is can they really use taking Rasner out of a game an example. I mean we are talking about Daryl Rasner nice guy and all but you can tell me that taking him out of a game before hge got the opportunity for a win effected his confidence the rest of the season. In many aspects he got more than plenty of opportunities for wins and didnt come through.

  408. Bronx Jeers September 28th, 2008 at 9:25 am

George King from the Post is reporting Cashman telling Steinboys that he wants to return.

It’s just weird as for years I wished for Cash’s departure and now that the moment is upon us, I’m terrified he’s leaving. I think he’s made so many blunders in terms of putting together a rotation but something tells me that his leaving would bring absolute chaos as the Steinboys seem clueless.

  409. SJ44 September 28th, 2008 at 9:28 am

Gayle, I don’t get caught up with the game strategy stuff.

Mainly because, when its written about by people, its usually about the stuff that went wrong.

They never write about a good decision to go to the bullpen, a key hit and run, a good bench move, etc.

Overall, his in game work was was solid. He produced a pretty damn good bullpen. It would have been better if he had more starters who could have given him innings.

The lineup changes? Torre had about 140 different lineups in 1998 and nobody said a word about different lineups.

The issue wasn’t the different lineups. It was how those lineups were communicated to the players. I also think he got a little too caught up in mixing and matching. A common mistake with young managers.

He an older team and was working at trying to balance guys getting rest and being able to hold up over the course of the season. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn’t.

He wasn’t perfect and he knows that. He also wasn’t a dolt.

When all is said and done, he will have won 88-90 games this year. That’s considered a “bad” year in Yankeeland.

In other places, especially given everything he had to deal with this year, that ain’t bad.

  410. Pov September 28th, 2008 at 9:31 am

I wish Moose would have been in the second game instead of against Dice K, but perhaps he would only pitch 5 innings anyways

The weather is Boston looks really bad, I’m not optomistic they can play today.

Santana comes through again, what a stupid decision by the Yanks. Another complete game shutout, 3 hitter and 9K’s, a season ERA of 2.53. Even with the Yanks inconsitent hitting he could have won 20 here. He was the difference in us NOT making the playoffs this year.

  411. Bronx Jeers September 28th, 2008 at 9:38 am

The stars are aligned for this being Mooses’ last game as A Yankee.

It seems like he’s leaning towards retirement. If he keeps playing, it’s to reach 300 wins.

    From the Post:

And there is a real possibility the 39-year-old Mussina, a borderline Hall of Famer, retires. His family wants him home and he said yesterday that chasing 300 wins would be a motivator. Since he estimated that would take three years – he takes 269 victories to the mound today against the Red Sox looking for his first 20-win season – Mussina may figure to shut it off.

“Can I do it for three more years?” asked Mussina, who will pitch the first game today against Daisuke Matsuzaka. “If I am in it for one, I am in it for three.”

His family wanting him home in Montoursville, Pa., isn’t the only indication Mussina may retire. He has taken boxes of balls and other mementos from his victories this year to give to family, friends and former coaches.

“Most of them are leaning toward me going home,” Mussina said. “My wife would have liked me to retire five years ago.”

If he doesn’t retire, Mussina said the Yankees would be his top choice, but not the only one. He said Detroit and Toronto aren’t outside of the travel circle he has drawn around Montoursville.

  412. Doreen September 28th, 2008 at 9:52 am

Thanks for helping me decipher the playoff stuff, guys.

    SJ44 -

I agree. It did take Girardi some time to get his “sea legs.” But he’s a smart and, I think, an earnest guy who will use this year’s experiences to help him going forward. (By the by, it’s nice to know I’m not the only one who isn’t an Ed Price fan.)

    Gayle -

I was also going to reference the Rasner stuff in my earlier post. I thought it was a poor example to use. He was given many, many opportunities, number one; and number two, I believe he’d thrown more pitches in that game than he ever had in a major league game to that point. I believe Girardi didn’t want him to end up losing the game, rather than preventing him from winning the game, given the weakness of the offense.

  413. pat September 28th, 2008 at 9:55 am

How big a deal was the meeting that Jeter was asked to sit in on with Hal, Cash and Girardi on the homestand following the Minny trip? At the time I thought it BS that it is was being explained as management wanting Jeter to express their support of the team but didn’t have a grasp of what issues existed. In hindsight, that was the day after the Minny series where Damon and Girardi had an issue and a few days before the line-up became stabilized.

People point to the Cano benching as coming a few months too late. That may have been a meeting that was a few months too late also.

    Bronx Jeers -

Wow, that’s the first I’ve heard of Moose considering other teams. But I guess if he decides he wants to try for 300 while the Yankees decide they don’t want him back, well, then he’d have to have a contingency plan. The question is, at 40, will a team give him a 3-year contract? And perhaps he feels the Yankees won’t give him 3 years guaranteed. I guess we’ll all have to wait and see how it plays out, but I’m getting ready for the Moose retirement announcement, myself.
