Mariano Rivera is deciding whether to have surgery on his shoulder.

Brian Cashman will decide soon whether he remains as the GM. This notebook also has details of a lopsided victory and good news for Andy Pettitte.

Here’s how you know when you’re coming off a long day, when you walk to the CVS next to the ballpark and buy a large Red Bull and a pack of gum and that’s breakfast.

Meanwhile, it’s raining at Fenway Park. Back later with the lineups.

Well, if Red Bull needed a poster child, they won’t have far to look…

  2. Barb27

Have you given up on the Diet Coke?

  3. vinny-b

    wtf

    syracuse/pitt is on SNY.

the Mets/Florida game will not be televised?

  4. pat

A little protein will make you more alert and keep you awake longer than the Red Bull and gum.

  5. NITRO

    CW 11 i think

  6. Jeff NJ

not sure how anyonr drinks Red Bull, it tastes like old time cough medicine.

Pete & I are 6 hours apart and we’re getting up at the same time? :)

    *repost*

    Good morning, guys.

Doreen, good to see you bounce back. Nothing can keep you down.

While I enjoy thrashing the Sox last night. And while I was none too pleased to see a 3-spot last night, it was freaky to see the final score.

Let’s hope last night’s game closes the book on one of the darkest chapters in current Yankee history.

The kiddies get to play, Moose goes for his 20th with a little help from his friends. Some of whom are headed for greener pastures. Or just the pasture.

Giambi will find a home. I mean if Thomas, Thome, and Stairs are employable. I hope it’s Oakland rather than Tampa. Abreu will get a 3 year deal with someone, guaranteed. If not, maybe he comes back for a two-year deal. Cody increased his stock value. Hope he’s not picked up, if what someone said about the 40-man is true.

Just for fun, the question of the day is: Where does Pavano end up?

Personally, I think he’d be a great fit for the Mets. Pedro’s done, right? Right?

  8. Anthony

Burnett close to extension with Toronto. CC doesnt want to play here.. Should we give focus to Sheets? and perhaps Garland??

  9. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Ex-bookendis

    Hey now, I’m watching Syracuse!

  10. Clint

Am I the only one still annoyed that Michael Kay was the last one to pull the lever?

  11. vinny-b

nitro: you right. Channel 11. Thanks.

Normally would view syracuse. Except, baseball more important today.

  12. R-Tek

    Anthony,

If we don’t get either CC or Burnett, we are screwed. With Tampa adding Price to an already explosive staff and Beckett due for a bounce back year, we will be far lagging our rivals.

Only way to rectify that would be to sign Tex and Manny. Get more offense and hope the young pitching can hold up.

And if Mussina retires on top of missing out on the 2 FA pitchers, then just forget it. We can kiss any type of contending good bye.

  13. mel

    Anthony,

NOO!! to Sheets. The man has a “cutting” sensation in his elbow.

Garland is okay, but I wouldn’t sign him to be a #4 for that kind of money.

If we get neither CC nor AJ, I go hard at Moose & Andy.

    Wang
    Joba
    Moose
    Andy
    Hughes/Aceves/Coke

It will be ideal if we get CC and/or AJ, but hardly the end of the world.

Improving our offense/defense will greatly improve the team.

  14. vtred

I’d rather sign Lowe than Sheets. Not really a pretty pitcher without the big 2 FAs. Jist have to hope that Joba stays healthy and becomes the ace and Hughes lives up to the hype (doubt it though) and that Andy has a bounce back year (likely).

Sheets will get a 5 yr deal from somebody, I’d stay away.

  15. LLIME

Assuming Mussina retires and we don’t get CC or Sabathia,

    Wang
    Joba
    Hughes
    Kennedy
    Ponson

    yup.

unless Tampa/Boston take unexpected steps back (injuries).

if NYY does not sign CC, 2009 will have indications of a rebuilding year. Burnett is a wildcard/no gurantee.

  17. autograph seeker

    this game on fox, no?

The Phillies game better not be a FOX option also, so I can watch the rivalry over PHI/WAS

    innings limits.

  19. Dr. J

    PHI/WSH
    MIL/CHC
    KC/MIN
    BOS/NYY

    all on FOX

The funny part is the most intriguing game is Mets/Marlins and thats not on FOX. They chose a meaningless Yankees/Red Sox game over that? And PHI/WSH has no intrigue, you know the Phillies are in. Unless the want to show the celebration live.

    And Royals/Twins? Really?

  20. Betsy

I think Cashman is really, truly annoyed this time and I think there is an excellent chance that he just decides that he can’t deal with the shenanigans anymore. Hank isn’t going to change and Cash knows it. Who wants to wake up every morning not knowing that today might be yet another day where one of your bosses makes it impossible to do your job? Cash was hired to be a GM, not a baby sitter and, unfortunately, Hank needs a babysitter.

CC’s so big he counts as two people now? :lol

Guys, calm down…we were within 2 when Joba went down and that was without Wang and Posada. We still ended up with 88+ victories. Have a little faith.

No wonder you look the way that you do. Curious, how much is the paper paying you, Pete?

  25. mel

    Betsy,

I don’t know. Hank is rather harmless.

I just can’t see Cashman leaving. The hard work is done. He elevated the farm system and rode out most of the albatross contracts. Why leave now and let someone else pick the fruits of his labor?

It’s really on the cusp, we’ve got Joba, Coke, and Aceves already contributing.

On the horizon, you’ve got Hughes, IPK, Sanchez, and Gardner.

And just beyond that you’ve got Jackson (whom he pulled aside and gave great words of encouragement), Melancon, Brackman, Horne, et al.

If he gets a Theo type deal, he’s back.

  26. Redding

If Hal really cared aout Cashman or had ‘power’ like people claim he does, he would tell his brother to shut up. If hr wants to talk about Torre and playoff seeding or something stupid, then let him as long as he isin’t undermining Cashman.

If Hal was a leader, he would set his brother straight and tell him to stop threatening Cashman. Or he would cut off his access to the media.

This shows me that Hal is kind of a middle man. He will listen to Hank on some things (A-Rod/Posada/MO contracts) and listen to Cashman on some things (not trading for Santana due to financial concerns). He is easily influenced and whoever makes the strongest argument, he will side with. For example, if Hank convinces Hal that we need 2 FA pitchers and Cashman only wants one and wants to give the kids the other slot, Hank might make a convincing argument that we need to win next year and the kids have been overhyped, and Hal might side with him.

Hal is a middle man, he has the power, but he gets imput from every cook in the kitchen and whoever has the best argument for/against something will win out.

  27. 86w183

I for one llike the way it appears Hal operates. In that chair you need patience and judgement.

We don’t need to go all “Chicken Little” on FA pitching before FA period even begins, do we?

There will be good pitchers in the trade market too. and as others have written, the Yanks have already added a big time starter named Wang.
