UPDATE, 7:33 p.m.: Mussina took the lineup out to the plate. … Sorry for the lack of stats but I have some newspaper stories to write and neither starter is going to be around very long.

UPDATE, 10:09 p.m.: It has now been a 13-hour day at the ballpark. This season just won’t end as Scranton faces Pawtucket.

UPDATE, 10:32 p.m.: Ah, yes, Jose Veras. This should get the game over with.

UPDATE, 10:41 p.m.: Intentionally walking the bases loaded with Jose Veras on the mound? You just know he’s going to walk in the winning run.

UPDATE, 10:46 p.m.: That’s your season, 89-73.

    Look, a Pudge sighting.

  2. rbj September 28th, 2008 at 7:23 pm

Jeebus but that’s a spring training lineup.

  3. Braintrust September 28th, 2008 at 7:25 pm

The Giambino in his last game in Pinstripes! Go Stache!

  4. Say it ain't so September 28th, 2008 at 7:25 pm

What channel is this game going to be on?

  5. Knicks September 28th, 2008 at 7:26 pm

Mussina will pull a Brett Favre… he will try to come back when we already moved on without him.

We say we are committed to Hughes in the rotation like the Packers were with Rodgers. The fanbase will be split. Cashman will alienate Mussina like he did Bernie. Then Mussina will request a trade. Teams like the Rangers and Brewers call but Mussina says he wants to stay in the division to spite us. Then he threatens to show up at ST if we refuse to trade him. Then the D’Backs give us a call and offer Moose to us. We give them permission to speak with Mussina and they give him a tour of the Phoenix area and convinces him they are a winning team. Mussina complies, we trade him. Hughes is on the DL again, Mussina leads the NL in ERA at the ASB. Our rotation is in shambles, D’Backs win the West running away.

  6. jennifer September 28th, 2008 at 7:26 pm

    What time does it start?

  7. Joe from Long Island September 28th, 2008 at 7:26 pm

    I’m not ready for winter.

But I am ready to start making plans for ST next year.

  8. jennifer September 28th, 2008 at 7:29 pm

Mike was very touched by the Standing o’ from the team!

  9. Yankees Ben September 28th, 2008 at 7:29 pm

Yes pete just one more game and you’re done for the season, where are the stats( i really liked them), and when exactly do they plan to start? lots of people we gotta say good bye Ponson, Stache, Pudge, Betemit (? is he under contract?),
Melky( will he still be around? although i didn’t gave up on him yet, he has shown he CAN play here. Etc..

  10. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and guess what: Santana is not coming here September 28th, 2008 at 7:30 pm

So this is it for the 2008 season. :(

  11. Oddessy September 28th, 2008 at 7:31 pm

Very nice to see the Cowboys lose on the same day the Mets are eliminated from playoff contention.

Betsy, hopefully your Bears can pull it out tonight against the Eagles.

  12. Doreen September 28th, 2008 at 7:31 pm

Anyone see Posada’s Centerstage? Awesome. Must see YES-TV.

  13. R-Tek September 28th, 2008 at 7:33 pm

Was there anything more lame than the Shea Stadium ceremony?

  14. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Real baseball fans vote September 28th, 2008 at 7:33 pm

Doreen: What did he say? I was eating dinner.

  15. ÆŽR (The Final Season) September 28th, 2008 at 7:33 pm

I just heard that Mr. Moose won 20 games. I didn’t think he had it in him. Nevertheless, I’m very happy for him, but still mad at that a*hole Carl Everett.

  16. jennifer September 28th, 2008 at 7:33 pm

Doreen I am, too funny. Especially when Jorge said that Stump told him he wasn’t playing than told him to go in the clubhouse and take his clothes off. Right after Jorge said it, he realized how it sounded.

What channel is the game on tonight?

  18. Ed - looking foward to 2009 September 28th, 2008 at 7:34 pm

how crazy would it be with Mussina come back out and get his 21st win?

  19. Doreen September 28th, 2008 at 7:34 pm

    R=Tek -

It wasn’t that bad. It’s not the Yankees, no, but it was fine. I liked how the players were shaking hands with the people in the stands.

  20. trisha - I am delusional, juvenile, and thoughtless... September 28th, 2008 at 7:34 pm

The game looks like it’s about to begin. I have it on NESN. I thought it was supposed to be on YES.

  21. Ed - looking foward to 2009 September 28th, 2008 at 7:34 pm

    it is on YES…

  22. Wilson September 28th, 2008 at 7:34 pm

Randy Johnson threw a CG SHO today and struck out 9 (though he did allow an unearned run so I guess it wasn’t a SHO)

  23. Doreen September 28th, 2008 at 7:35 pm

    Angel -

    It’s on YES.

  24. mel September 28th, 2008 at 7:35 pm

As long as Moose doesn’t pull a Pettitte and go to Philly. :)

    Go Mets! hehe

  26. nathan September 28th, 2008 at 7:36 pm

we might not see him next year if he doesn’t

Angel, try it out on mlb.tv then

  29. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Real baseball fans vote September 28th, 2008 at 7:37 pm

    Mike Mussina’s managing the game?

  30. Y26 September 28th, 2008 at 7:37 pm

The ceremony itself was alright… but the fact it was after their 2nd consecutive collapse and the fact it was rainy and gloomy outside took a lot out of it.

Whose dumb idea was it to schedule it after the final game?

  31. jennifer September 28th, 2008 at 7:37 pm

    Who is managing?

  32. Terry #1 September 28th, 2008 at 7:38 pm

    Gardner on with Wakefield pitching…

    Ha!

  33. RalphieD (dont hate gardner) September 28th, 2008 at 7:38 pm

i think mussina just handed the lineup card in

  34. Ed - looking foward to 2009 September 28th, 2008 at 7:38 pm

Before the game began, Mussina gave the lineup card to the umpires.

  35. Betsy September 28th, 2008 at 7:39 pm

Oddyssey, thanks! I love Da Bears, but after blowing two games they should have won, I’m not holding out much hope.

Ugh – can’t believe I missed Moose’s comments. Aww, a standing O for him in the clubhouse? How wonderful for him – he deserves it. He’s gotten a lot of grief over the years, if not from fans, then from the media because he’s a unique personality. Well, I think his teammates appreciate him and I, for one, love his sly wit.

  36. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing September 28th, 2008 at 7:39 pm

There’s no day schedule on the screen, just an InDemand logo.

  37. 38HotDogs September 28th, 2008 at 7:39 pm

Angel, don’t know if it helps but it’s on 729 on direct tv EI – NESPN feed

  38. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Real baseball fans vote September 28th, 2008 at 7:39 pm

The Mets didn’t have anyone on their team thanking their fans, did they?

  39. Nick in SF September 28th, 2008 at 7:39 pm

Let’s all be realistic here. Moose has given a number of indications that he would like to come back or would at least consider coming back. Moose has also given some indications that this is it. Anything — either way– is speculation as it’s highly likely that Moose doesn’t know what he’s going to decide.

  40. Fire Meachum September 28th, 2008 at 7:40 pm

So does Santana start game 1 in Wrigley on short rest or Pelfrey?

  41. Ed - looking foward to 2009 September 28th, 2008 at 7:40 pm

I hope Hughes comes in for Ponson!!!

  42. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing September 28th, 2008 at 7:40 pm

Why would Extra Innings not show the last game of the year? Even if it was “meaningless” and postponed game.

I pay enough for it! *scowl*

  43. Nick in SF September 28th, 2008 at 7:41 pm

“So does Santana start game 1 in Wrigley on short rest or Pelfrey?”

Can we not talk Fantasy Baseball right now? There’s still a real game going on.

  44. Doreen September 28th, 2008 at 7:41 pm

    Rebecca – No

The current team wasn’t involved at all.

The stadium announcer thanked the fans.

Mr. Met pulled the countdown lever. It revealed “CitiField.”

But the players coming out was nice.

  45. Sea Net September 28th, 2008 at 7:41 pm

Did the Mets do a march around the stadium after the game? With Schoenweiss and Ayala leading the march?

  46. Doreen September 28th, 2008 at 7:42 pm

    Correction – the “old” players.

  47. Rob NY September 28th, 2008 at 7:43 pm

not sure why ( because the sound is off on the tv as I’m reading) but phil Hughes was tossing in the pen. Is he a possibility?

  48. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Real baseball fans vote September 28th, 2008 at 7:43 pm

    Doreen: wow.

It’s amazing how two stadiums in the same city could be so different.

  49. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing September 28th, 2008 at 7:43 pm

My EI channels are all in the 300s. I guess I’m not getting it. They really piss me off when they pull this crap.

  50. Dave D September 28th, 2008 at 7:44 pm

I heard a rumor from my friend in Milwaukee that the Brewers are considering pitching CC in every game of the series against the Phillies, just to try and get the most out of their investment. Anyone else hear this?

  51. bigjf September 28th, 2008 at 7:44 pm

Pretty appropriate that Ponson is starting the final game of this season…good riddance.

  52. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Real baseball fans vote September 28th, 2008 at 7:45 pm

Guys, Ponsanity is pitching. If we don’t see Phil I’ll be shocked.

  53. Nick in SF September 28th, 2008 at 7:46 pm

Very annoying that DirecTV is only showing the NESN feed.

  54. ÆŽR (The Final Season) September 28th, 2008 at 7:46 pm

Phil Hughes should do very, very well with this AAA lineup.

  55. sw September 28th, 2008 at 7:47 pm

Hey if the Yankees win they’ll have a better record than the Mets.

  56. Ed - looking foward to 2009 September 28th, 2008 at 7:48 pm

even the B team is killing Ponson!! Where is Hughes?

  57. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing September 28th, 2008 at 7:49 pm

At least you’re getting the game, Nick.

  58. trisha - I am delusional, juvenile, and thoughtless... September 28th, 2008 at 7:51 pm

If any of you have mlb.tv, it appears that they are televising the game. I can’t get it because I am in the sux market.

  59. ÆŽR (The Final Season) September 28th, 2008 at 7:51 pm

“Nearly 30 minutes after Ryan Church made the last out at the stadium, most of the fans were still in their seats. They booed when Florida players came out to collect dirt from the basepaths. They booed every time the Mets announced anything over the public address system — “Our Shea Goodbye ceremony will begin in five minutes,” was particularly unpopular. And they booed Mr. Met.”

Does the dirt from that old dump really have much sentimental or monetary value?

  60. jennifer September 28th, 2008 at 7:53 pm

I think they did cause that is the place where they knocked the Mets out two seasons in a row.

  61. mel September 28th, 2008 at 7:54 pm

    IHWSFM.

Prize to the person who deciphers that.

  62. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Real baseball fans vote September 28th, 2008 at 7:55 pm

Mel: I hate Wakefield so f- much?

  63. mel September 28th, 2008 at 7:55 pm

I think they shouldn’t touch the dirt. It might have toxins in it.

  64. mel September 28th, 2008 at 7:56 pm

    Good shot, Rebecca. =)

  70. Josh September 28th, 2008 at 8:00 pm

I saw this great video of Wakefield pitching to Dave Roberts (of the Orioles). He struck out Roberts on a knuckleball and the camera zooms in on Roberts. He kinda drops is bat, takes off his helmet, turns to Wakefield walking off, smiles and clearly says, “I hate you.”

  71. Buddy Biancalana September 28th, 2008 at 8:01 pm

    mel-

You should know the only way to stump Rebecca is to ask about a 3 hour tour.

  72. Nick in SF September 28th, 2008 at 8:01 pm

I was going to guess “I hate when Sidney fails miserably” but the other one makes more sense.

  73. Bob Shirley's Changeup September 28th, 2008 at 8:02 pm

I posted this at the end of the Moose post but looks like all the die-hards are here tonight so I’ll propose this:

Best Yankees free agent signings ever:

    1: Reggie
    2: Winfield
    3: Mussina
    4: Hunter
    5: Key
    6: Giambi
7: David Cone* – came in a trade but i think he was a FA after the ‘95 season ended
    8: Brosius
    9: Mike Stanton
    10: Tommy John

(not counting El Duque, Matsui, who I suppose were kind-of free agents)

    Anyone I’m missing? Thoughts??

  74. RalphieD (dont hate gardner) September 28th, 2008 at 8:03 pm

HEY PETE…sorry just want to get your attention…i hope you do your predictions for next year like you did last year…i really enjoyed it..no rush, just wanna make sure you remember!

  75. Bronx Jeers September 28th, 2008 at 8:04 pm

    Tino?

  76. RhapsodyInBlue September 28th, 2008 at 8:04 pm

Maybe after the long Pennsylvania winter in Montoursville, he’ll reconsider.

I’ve been through there a few times as a telephone equipment installer back in the early 80s, it really is beautiful country, lush green, rolling hills, farm country, lots of streams and rivers.

Moose has found his niche, if you remember last season, he rarely got into the 6th inning.
This season I can’t remember a game he pitched poorly in.

I watched all his starts, there were so many early in the season his team sabotaged his efforts with poor defense or poor run support. I never thought he would make 20, but this team has played much better behind him the last 5 weeks or so.

Speaking as a Yankee fan, it’s been awhile that we’ve had a pitcher who has been as consistently good as Mike Mussina was in 2008.

  77. Bob Shirley's Changeup September 28th, 2008 at 8:05 pm

    Tino was a trade…

  78. ÆŽR (The Final Season) September 28th, 2008 at 8:05 pm

I want to see a Red S*x player get drilled, including and especially Tim Wakefield.

  79. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and guess what: Santana is not coming here September 28th, 2008 at 8:05 pm

  85. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and Congrats to Moose on win #20 September 28th, 2008 at 8:07 pm

    thank you Melky

  86. Bob Shirley's Changeup September 28th, 2008 at 8:08 pm

Yes, Goose should be in there — probably fourth (see, I knew I’d forget an important one!)

  87. Nick in SF September 28th, 2008 at 8:08 pm

Please don’t get picked off or thrown out, Melky; that’s no way out of the dog house.

  88. RalphieD (dont hate gardner) September 28th, 2008 at 8:08 pm

    melky and miranda!

  89. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Real baseball fans vote September 28th, 2008 at 8:08 pm

I could never live somewhere with more trees than people. I wouldn’t know what to do with myself.

I’m a north Jersey kid through and through.

  90. Ed - looking foward to 2009 September 28th, 2008 at 8:09 pm

GB7, Girardi could have had put Hughes out there against Sox’s B team. Hughes faced them in AAA and it has at least 12 Ks written all over it.

  91. mel September 28th, 2008 at 8:10 pm

That would’ve been a great bunt situation.

  92. Bob Shirley's Changeup September 28th, 2008 at 8:10 pm

good call Buddy – I know they re-signed him as a FA also but he shouldn’t count…

  93. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Real baseball fans vote September 28th, 2008 at 8:10 pm

    Robbie don’t bunt

  94. Pauly September 28th, 2008 at 8:10 pm

Pretty good list change-up. The only one I can think of off the top of my head would be Boggs. On top of helping the 96′ team, he was the guy who initially taught the team how to grind out at bats, make the pitcher work and get to the underside of the other team’s bullpen. Plus, it’s always great to take a great player away from the Sox!

  95. mel September 28th, 2008 at 8:11 pm

    Nick,

With all the rumblings & grumblings about Girardi, we haven’t heard ONE word about Melky’s treatment. Kind of gives you pause.

  96. mel September 28th, 2008 at 8:12 pm

    Bob,

I don’t see A-rod on that list. They’re going to kill you. :P

  97. Ed - looking foward to 2009 September 28th, 2008 at 8:13 pm

when Robbie hitted the one out, I thought it was a home run or at lest a double.

  98. Buddy Biancalana September 28th, 2008 at 8:14 pm

    A Rod was a trade.

  99. mel September 28th, 2008 at 8:14 pm

    They call the “1st & 2nd & nothing!”

  100. mel September 28th, 2008 at 8:15 pm

    That’s right, I forgot the Boston thing…

  101. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Real baseball fans vote September 28th, 2008 at 8:15 pm

At least Alex can’t opt out this year.

Could you imagine how bad that’d be if we had to deal with that all over again?

  102. pat September 28th, 2008 at 8:15 pm

    Bob

How about Mo? He was a free agent last year.

  103. Bob Shirley's Changeup September 28th, 2008 at 8:16 pm

Pauly: Yeah, Boggs certainly deserves merit… Another reason I posted this is that very few of the most significant Yankees over the past 30 years have come this way… A lot of guys have gotten paid big $$$ through free agency, and more power to ‘em… But in the long run even “picking and choosing” one or two “key” FA’s hasn’t worked… going all the way back to Dave Collins and ending (so far) with Pavano and Farnsworth, et al…

  104. Bob Shirley's Changeup September 28th, 2008 at 8:17 pm

True on A-Rod… But he first came in a trade, and I guess technically he did the opt-out FA thing last yr, but did anyone else have the op to sign him, I forget…

  105. YankeeJosh September 28th, 2008 at 8:18 pm

Hughes should have started this game, even on 3 days rest, just to get his innings up. Ponson has no future with this team. That having been said, he was getting in his work in the bullpen, and I doubt we see him in the game now.

  106. Bob Shirley's Changeup September 28th, 2008 at 8:19 pm

Really mean to say free agents from other teams, but, yes, Mo certainly would be at the very top of the list…

  107. jennifer September 28th, 2008 at 8:20 pm

Hughes is already going to AZ to get his innings up.

  108. Ed - looking foward to 2009 September 28th, 2008 at 8:22 pm

    Bob –

    how about Jimmy Key?

  109. Bob Shirley's Changeup September 28th, 2008 at 8:27 pm

Ed – I put Key fifth… But looking back, I think David Wells would be a much better pick there – Key really only had 2 good yrs with the Yanks, though I think he was a significant part of getting the beginning of the Dynasty going… Wells was great all four years in Pinstripes (both times as a FA)

  110. john September 28th, 2008 at 8:28 pm

I really enjoy this blog, especially the commitment from Peter and the Yankee fans who contribute every day. There were over 1,000 comments from game 1 today. I took a look at the Met blog. On the day of their most important game they have 6 comments. The dedication of both the author and the readers is amazing. I’m looking forward to the hot stove season and 2009. Keep up the great work.

  111. Bob Shirley's Changeup September 28th, 2008 at 8:28 pm

And Bob Shirley would probably not be in the top 100 ;)

  112. pat September 28th, 2008 at 8:28 pm

    Robbie flashing the leather!

  113. Doreen September 28th, 2008 at 8:30 pm

    Rebecca -

Probably had to do with ARod. :)

Agree with John – it’s the last game of the first playoff-less season in 14 yrs and there are more than 100 comments an hour into the game… Great dedication, all! And a thanks to Peter for making this possible (some writers really hate doing these kinds of blogs but Peter really seems to enjoy it)…

  120. Christina September 28th, 2008 at 8:39 pm

Doesn’t Wakefield have an interesting type of contract structure. Its like a one year deal thats worth the same money every year that the Red Sox just continuously offer him?

    Hey Pete,
You are the best baseball writer in NY, but today in your article where you gave out you end of season awards you missed the boat big time on the AL Rookie of the Year. You at least could have mentioned Concordia’s Mike Aviles, I remember you wrote a feature article on his college team when they went 44-10, Mike led all major league rookies in batting .325, 10 hr’s, 51 RBI, he is the Royals nominee for the Hank Aaron award. Pete you missed the boat.Give the local guy some love

  124. GreenBeret7 September 28th, 2008 at 8:40 pm

Interesting thing from Kay…Wakefield asked for the ball to end the 5th inning, possibly his last career start/game?

  125. #9 September 28th, 2008 at 8:41 pm

“Best Yankees free agent signings ever:”

    Goose Gossage

  126. asdrubal September 28th, 2008 at 8:41 pm

“Meanwhile, you can make a heck of a case for CC Sabathia for NL MVP. Who has been more valuable to a team than that guy?”

Well, for starters, Albert Pujols and Tim Lincecum and Lance Berkman.

  127. Viking Coach September 28th, 2008 at 8:42 pm

** Mike led the majors in batting avg. for rookies….Longoria deserves to win, but Mike merits a mention

  128. Bob Shirley's Changeup September 28th, 2008 at 8:43 pm

#9 – Yes, Goose was big omission, should be third or fourth, maybe second if you go on impact alone…

  129. Joe from Long Island September 28th, 2008 at 8:44 pm

GB 7- Did Kay say that? Sounds like it if that’s the case. I had thought that Wakefield had maintained that he would come back to the Sox on a year-to-year basis, if they wanted him. If this is true, then something must have changed in his life. Hopefully, nothing bad. Wakefield is supposed to be a good guy.

  130. ray (sox fan) September 28th, 2008 at 8:44 pm

Yes, Wakefield has a year to year option that is in the neighborhood of 3-4 million I believe.

GB7, it will be interesting what the Sox do with Wakefield in the off season. In the second half of the season he alternated between being very bad and being very good. If the knuckleball is going right it is very hard to hit, otherwise it is a homerun derby simulation!

  131. Nick in SF September 28th, 2008 at 8:44 pm

Cano is a hit machine now.

Memo to Joe Girardi: bench Cano again right near the end of Spring Training in ’09 and tell him he needs to get his act together.

Rebecca, I don’t know I’m kind of exhausted with all of this! Of course is might hit me tomorrow and the next day when I go to turn on YES and there are no games or postgames to watch!

If I don’t get to say this again tonight I just want you all to know how much fun it’s been hanging out with you. The interaction really helped get me through this strange season. Expecially being pretty much isolated in Sux country, it really helped to be able to emote and debrief with people to whom I never had to explain any particular feeling or reaction. Pete makes the blog possible but it was really the camaraderie with all of you that kept me coming back. I really have to get some stuff in order for work so I am using tonight’s game more as background than foreground!

I will definitely be stopping by for hotstove.

    :)

I’m watching ESPN’s MLB 2008: An Epic Season right now. It made me realized that Josh Hamiltion could be the next A-Rod. It amazing that he haven’t reach his peak yet and putting up numbers like a vet. who knows what kind of numbers he would put up when he reached his prime? It would be crazy..

  141. GreenBeret7 September 28th, 2008 at 8:52 pm

Joe From LI, yeah, Kay brought that up in the top of the 6th inning and they showed wakefield asking for the ball from the umpire. Curious, but, if the Sox believe in Buchholz and or Masterson as starters next year, he’d really have no spot except in the bullpen.

I’d think that he’d make somebody a really good pitching coach or minor league traveling instructor. The man can pitch and he knows all sides of baseball on the field.

Go up to Cooperstown on a random day in January or February.

Well, since Williams was 6’4″/6’5″, the chances are that it wouldn’t broken them, because in one book he said that his legs were so far under that instrument panel, being fired out of that cockpit, it would have taken off both legs at the knees.

Another note on Williams in Korea, John Glenn said Williams was the best wingman he ever had.

Board is really slow on sending the posts and copying…disregard the last partial post.

Yeah, I looked at the response with the cut-off. Didn’t see the COMPLETE response till just a second ago. Knew something happened there.

He said Ted had the best eyesight the USAF ever tested and that all of the pilots in that squadron liked to have him on their missions because he could spot enemy MIGs coming quicker than anybody else.

Ted flew with Glenn and I think he was flying when Ted brought his fighter down for an emergency landing. Crash & Smash Team was on their game that day.

  209. jennifer September 28th, 2008 at 9:38 pm

Mike wouldn’t consider pitching in the NL.

  213. mel September 28th, 2008 at 9:41 pm

Sigh, does Rasner not know that walking Crisp is like giving up a double.

Kind of would hate to lose this game and waste Ponson’s gem.

  218. Nick in SF September 28th, 2008 at 9:42 pm

I am going to go out on a limb and say that Mussina is either a Yankee or a gentleman farmer next season.

  219. Ed - looking foward to 2009 September 28th, 2008 at 9:43 pm

    Rebecca –

LOL oh…I don’t blame you. hahas

  220. jennifer September 28th, 2008 at 9:44 pm

Agreed, Mike is either a Yankee, or a little league manager.

  221. BBFan September 28th, 2008 at 9:45 pm

I think Mussina will come back for one more year for the thrill of pitching in the new Yankee Stadium. In fact, if he comes back, I would not be surprized if he is the starting pitcher for the opening day in the new park.

  222. gayle September 28th, 2008 at 9:45 pm

By the by did anyone watch the Centerstage on Jorg between games it was really good but really disjointed I thought in terms of flow.

I think to me more than anything re-inforced how much the team missed him not only on the field but more importantly in the clubhouse

  223. mel September 28th, 2008 at 9:46 pm

    Sigh again.

The first word I think of when I see Rasner is “toil”

    The second word is “futile”

Please put in someone to get out of this inning.

  224. sunny615 September 28th, 2008 at 9:46 pm

I watched most of it, but my MIL called in the middle, so I have to rewatch. I loved it. Really telling that he thought (thinks?) there are players on that team who didn’t think losing was such a bad thing. I think that’s the line that should have gotten the press – not so much the Joba stuff. Coming from Jorge, I take it seriously.

  230. Brandon (THE METS BULLPEN IS GANSTA !)..."Keep Manny away !" September 28th, 2008 at 9:48 pm

    Good lord Rasner pitching relief.

  231. mel September 28th, 2008 at 9:48 pm

  232. Christina September 28th, 2008 at 9:49 pm

Not that he would sign with them- I didnt realize he didnt get along with that manager. I would assume the yankees would want him back- given he wants to return. And wow, for a literacy major, my grammar has been horrid lately.

  233. Terry #1 September 28th, 2008 at 9:49 pm

Come on RASNER strike him OUT!!

  234. Doreen September 28th, 2008 at 9:49 pm

    That’s three sighs now.

  237. Nick in SF September 28th, 2008 at 9:49 pm

Does anyone know how batting averages are rounded from the 4th digit?

Arod is batting .30039 right now. If he were to pinch hit and make an out, his average would drop to .20080. Would that be rounded up to .300? I can’t see them risking another at-bat if there’s a chance he finishes at .299.

And Jeter I think would not appear regardless, but his average is .30030, so his would drop to .29983.

  238. jennifer September 28th, 2008 at 9:50 pm

Well Christina, if Mike reads this, he will never go to Toronto.

Riding the elevator up to the press level here at Rogers Centre, I was standing beside Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi and the friendly elevator operator. He turned to J.P., points to Mike Mussina’s name on the lineup sheet that was taped to the wall and said, “I don’t like this guy.”

He isn’t alone. It’s no secret that Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston isn’t a fan of Mussina, and that’s putting it lightly. Earlier this season, when asked about Mussina — tonight’s starter for the Yankees — Gaston said, “Mike Mussina can kiss my [posterior], and you can tell him I said that,”

Today, when told that Mussina might never win 20 games in a season if Toronto won tonight’s game, Gaston smiled and said, “Man, I wish I was playing.” There were laughs all around as Cito left the dugout. Gaston’s dislike of Mussina dates back to the 1993 All-Star Game in Baltimore, when the manager didn’t use the pitcher in his home city.

  239. Nick in SF September 28th, 2008 at 9:50 pm

make that .29980 for Arod’s potential new average.

  245. Jeff NJ September 28th, 2008 at 9:52 pm

  246. daver September 28th, 2008 at 9:53 pm

  253. 86w183 September 28th, 2008 at 9:54 pm

Start rounding forward from right to left… if the number is five or higher, raise the next number to the left up one and so on. However if you get to a four you stop right there.

    THUS

    .29983 would be .300

    .29948 would be .299

There will be a test and no slider rulers allowed.

  254. mel September 28th, 2008 at 9:54 pm

3 walks and a single. JFC.

  255. Doreen September 28th, 2008 at 9:54 pm

    Yuck.

    Well, no extra innings, anyway.

90 would have looked really good; 89′s not terrible. But the truth of the matter is, it doesn’t matter either way.

  256. Nick in SF September 28th, 2008 at 9:54 pm

pat, I hadn’t thought of that, I just looked up the numbers on Yahoo sports from the team page. But after your question, I clicked on the box score from the first game and it shows Arod’s average as .302 after going 2 for 4, so I’m guessing that the numbers I gave before were before the game. Making my question moot.

  267. Nick in SF September 28th, 2008 at 9:57 pm

  270. t-rock September 28th, 2008 at 9:57 pm

Well using Rasner in a tie game isin’t exactly playing to win. Girardi probably just wanted to get him in there as a token.

Doesn’t really matter— Moose got 20, Papelbon got ticked off. Great day all around.

  279. 86w183 September 28th, 2008 at 9:59 pm

Rasner is in there because Girardi used four pitchers to get through the eighth inning earlier today. Obviously he doesn’t want to use any of those guys twice. But wouldn’t Edwar Ramirez or Jose Veras or David Robertson been a better choice in the 8th inning?

  280. James (let's play 2!) September 28th, 2008 at 9:59 pm

Nice hit Melky – way to take that pitch tho…

  295. Betsy September 28th, 2008 at 10:01 pm

Eh, I’m not that upset. We got the win that counted most, Moose’s 20th. The Mets lost and the Brewers won, so overall it was a good day. One win, when they are going home tomorrow, doesn’t mean much at all. They played well lately and some good things with the young players (Hughes, Coke, Cano) have happened, but overall – this season stunk and the sooner it’s over, the better. Now we can move on to the important business of the off-season.

  296. Ed - looking foward to 2009 September 28th, 2008 at 10:01 pm

  371. Bob(The Original) September 28th, 2008 at 10:14 pm

Josh Beckett has an oblique injury and may not be able to pitch against the Angels, the Boston Herald reports.

While there was no previous hint that he was hurt, this makes some sense, as the Red Sox have been awfully quiet about their rotation. If the Red Sox are going to be without Beckett and Mike Lowell in the ALDS, along with having J.D. Drew probably unavailable to start more than a game or two, then it probably isn’t going to be their year. Jon Lester would move up to start Game 1, with Daisuke Matsuzaka due to follow on Friday. Paul Byrd or Tim Wakefield would get the nod in Game 3. Wakefield helped his case with a strong showing Sunday. Sep. 28 – 10:08 pm et

Well I’m out, the season didn’t end the way we would have liked it, but I have to give Joe some credit. This team didn’t lay down and die the last two weeks of the season. They went out and played hard. Shame they couldn’t play like this all season. Right now they look pretty unbeatable.

Congrats to Moose on his 20th win, what a way to go out if that is how he does it. I’d love if he returned, but If he doesn’t I understand that as well.

  384. jennifer September 28th, 2008 at 10:19 pm

Fans are clueless, Robertson and Cervelli are both playing to show the team something. Robertson wants to keep the yankees eyes on him Cervelli wants the yankees not to forget him should they need a catcher next year.

You don’t like the game, leave and go home.

  385. Rob NY -- 2009 The Road to Redemption September 28th, 2008 at 10:20 pm

    ____________________________________________________

Yeah, Nick, there has been. When Williams hit .406 back in 1941, he was at .3996 and they were going to sit him down because it would have rounded out to .400 and Williams refused, saying he wouldn’t deserve to hit .400 if he did sit out the DH on the last day. Pf course, he went 6-8 in the DH.

Yes, a playoff for a post-season berth (1978 Yanx/Sawx) is considered an extension of the regular season and all the stats do count.

GB 7…. you round up right to left, adding to the left if the number is 5 or higher. The exception is if the number is four… so you are correct .29947 is not .300, but .29951 is.

    That would be a no.

Well okay I guess there is a method to this madness…

Living in a place where I cant enjoy every game with Yankee fans it always helped bring a little bit of home to here when I could put the MLB.tv on one side of the screen and the LoHud blog on the other. Here’s to some great baseball conversation for the playoffs, the exciting Hot Stove season, and the road to redemption that will be 2009. Thanks to Pete for hosting us all here and thanks again to all of you for your wide variety of experiences, input, and opinions. They all make this place worth coming too everyday.

The media will NOT be hard on the Mets. They will give them a pass and blame Wagner’s injury. They will go ga ga over Santana and how Manuel resurrected them from the dead and took them all the way until the final day to get eliminated.

The media loves Manuel and Omar. Francessa will go soft on them. Carton, Sommers, Roberts, will all make excuses— they are the Mets station aferall. Daily News is a Mets paper (they are the flagship paper of SNY). Harper/Madden will give them a pass, as will Davidoff and the rest of the media.

Russo and Kay will be the only ones tomorrow who tell it as it is. Maybe the Post as well.

We finished with the seventh best record in all of baseball and the fourth best in AL.

All the teams that made the playoffs have better record than Yanks, with the exception of Dodgers who are five games behind Yanks. In fact, Dodgers have the fifteenth best record in all of baseball and there are eight teams who did not make the playoffs but have better record than Dodgers. Irrespective of that, let us wish good luck to Torre.

Cashman built a very flawed team going into Spring Training (3 rookies in the rotation with no vet backups, Mussina coming off a 5 ERA season, Andy with a tumultuous offseason, no bullpen at all, no bench, old offense etc.) but we overcame a lot of those things and still put ourselves in position to win. Wang’s injury was a killer and Joba’s injury finished us off. Posada and Matsui out also killed us.

Brewers have really been pushing CC. As you guys think about signing him, any concerns that he has been overused this year?

  566. NITRO September 28th, 2008 at 11:17 pm

Tomorrow in the Daily News from Harper, Madden, and Lupica–

Mets had a great season but a disappointing ending but have a very bright future with a core of Santana, Pelfrey, Reyes, Beltran, Wright. They will be back next year. Manual is a great manager and Omar saved the franchise and should not get blamed. Wilpons are great owners and will re-tool the team and spend money to win.

Yankees have no farm system, things will get far worse before they get better. Hughes is overhyped, no position players. Should have had Santana. Old team, will go into old habbits and buy free agents. No pitching, Cashman is awful. Girardi can;t hold Torre’s jock, players hate him. Hank and Hal are George in the 80s and will run the franchise in the ground. Boston is a much better franchise. Yankees will go through an 80s type tailspin.

    ray,

cc isin’t going to sign here anyway, he is going west or to a team like the white sox. every team will throw 120+ mil at him so there is no incentive to come to a place he doesn’t like. so we dont have to worry.

I have none, his body build and endurance is one I haven’t seen since Wells.

    Final 2008 Girardi Postgame

Our guys fought and fought and fought….we played out best baseball the last 16 days or so….It was good we finished strong and that shows us the players respect the game….The last few weeks wasn’t a different effort just different results….It was a tough season and we didn’t reach our goals….There are some players we’ll have our ee on in ST but it depends on what happens in the off season….Robbie changed his set up and responded well….I’m sad, I’d like to be playing Wednesday or Thursday but it will have to be a motivating factor for next year.

Joba can be the closer ! Everything else sucks, Hughes at 22 I don’t know a damn thing about him, but I’m sure he sucks too and anybody else IDK.

    Let me add to that:

Trade the whole farm for Josh Hamiliton, Chris Davis, and Taylor Teagarden, OR trading the whole farm for Joey Votto.

  573. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and Congrats to Moose on win #20 September 28th, 2008 at 11:20 pm

Thats because you have a good head on your shoulders, Rebecca. :)

  575. GreenBeret7 September 28th, 2008 at 11:21 pm

Ray, I have no concerns at all. The guy is huge…a horse. It was just 5-6 years ago, Randy Johnson and Schilling were pitching 259-260 innings, several years ago, and they both had a history of injuries, but, it was age, not wear and tear that made them less affective the past couple of years. I wouldn’t touch Sheets for no amount, but, I’d take Burnett.c

  576. ray (sox fan) September 28th, 2008 at 11:22 pm

I’m with Brandon on this one. I think there is a very good chance CC ends up with the Yankees.

  581. Guard September 28th, 2008 at 11:24 pm

Cashman isin’t coming back here… too much stress.

Seattle is a very attractive job. A rotation of Hernandez-Morrow-Bedard-Rowlandson Smith along with the #1 overall pick (that pitcher Stratsberg or whatever who is a STUD).

They have the inside track to good Latin American and Japanese players. They will sign Bobby V, who is one of the best managers in baseball. AL West is pathetic division. Their ownership will spend money and have some young talent.

Seattle future > Yankees future. Factor in low stress, no interference from their owner, lack of competition in the AL West, and it is a no brainer. If Cashman comes back here over Seattle, he is dumber than I thought.

  582. mel September 28th, 2008 at 11:25 pm

Wait, I thought Melky and Miranda (gosh, those sound like stripper names) lost the game tonight?

  583. small schools September 28th, 2008 at 11:25 pm

Anyone else feel pretty confident going into next year? We lost the MLB leader in wins over the past two seasons, an elite catcher, an all-star outfielder and a starter who was on his way to being ROY (for a month), plus arguably the greatest RH hitter of all time for a while, and witnessed subpay seasons from an all-star 2B and the aforementioned RH hitter, and we still won 89 games. That’s more than the AL Central and NL West champs; you gotta think that Wang and Joba alone would’ve won eight more games than Ponson and Rasner when they were out. I really like our odds with the money we’re shedding and the experience Girardi’s gained. If we only have one of those injuries next year, instead of 5, I think we’re in great shape. Hopefully Moose will be back, but either way I think we’re in good shape.

  584. Drew September 28th, 2008 at 11:26 pm

“I didn’t feel bad for Kevin Brown.

I actually kind of hated him for that.”

Me too, and I’d never really felt that way about any Yankee before that.

It was a petulant self-indulgent act, that hurt the team.

  586. TurnTables September 28th, 2008 at 11:26 pm

Nobody in our farm will fetch Hamilton straight up, let alone Davis and Teagardner as well.

  587. pat September 28th, 2008 at 11:26 pm

    Jeter

We didn’t do what we wanted to do so it’s a failure….We weren’t consistent enough, it was an up and down season for us….There’s usually changes here when you don’t win at the end but no one knows what they will be….It’s disappointing but it’s no different than when we found out in Toronto that we were eliminated…Everyone should take this season personally.

  588. DYNASTY IS DESTINY! September 28th, 2008 at 11:28 pm

CC, Wang, Joba…a starting rotation with those three would be formidable regardless of your 4 and 5…

But what are the plans for Joba? And will CC move East?

And how about Aceves? Don’t you think he deserves a shot at this rotation?

  589. trisha - I am delusional, juvenile, and thoughtless... September 28th, 2008 at 11:30 pm

Yankee Josh, please tell me if you ever come across it. I would love to be able to watch that again. I would be happy to pay you if you could make me a copy of that montage.

    Just beautiful.

  590. Betsy September 28th, 2008 at 11:30 pm

No question the media will go easy on the Mutts. LOL Omar Minaya is the architect of a team that has collapsed two years running and somehow he will get off scot free, particularly with Fatso Francesca. Meanwhile, the Yankees get creamed in the papers. The only sportswriters I read are Davidoff (on occasion I disagree with what he says, but I think he’s objective…plus, he believes in Cash’s plan) and Tyler Kepner. I guess I can add Mark Feinsand to the list – though usually it’s his blog I visit. I still would prefer that the Mets and Yankees be in the playoffs as opposed to both out, but since the Yanks are out, then I sure as heck am glad the Mets are, too. Wow – no post-season baseball in NY. Unbelievable.

  591. pat September 28th, 2008 at 11:30 pm

    Mariano

I’m okay….I’m shut down for this year now I guess…It’s (shoulder)something that bothers me that needs to be taken care of but I’m not worried at all….I’ve made my mind up about surgery but I want to tell my boss first….I was able to pitch with it this year with just adrenaline. You don’t think about it, you just go.

  592. mel September 28th, 2008 at 11:30 pm

Did anyone else laugh when Kay started talking about how the Red Sox had a decision to make with Varitek? How he wants Posada-like money? What will they do? Push the Captain out the door?

  593. Nick in SF September 28th, 2008 at 11:31 pm

ray, though it hurts me to say it, congrats on your team making the postseason. Watch out for that hurrican, I hear it’s bearing down on Maine.

  594. Drive 4-5 September 28th, 2008 at 11:32 pm

IMO Cashman returns. It would be an embarrasment for him to leave the year the team misses the playoffs largely due to the blind faith he put in 2 untested rookies and he screws up the 1st 2 picks of the amateur draft. He’d be leaving a lot of unfinished business.

  595. Brandon (THE METS BULLPEN IS GANSTA !)..."Keep Manny away !" September 28th, 2008 at 11:34 pm

Cashman isin’t coming back here… too much stress.

I didn’t read the NY Post today.

Seattle is a very attractive job. A rotation of Hernandez-Morrow-Bedard-Rowlandson Smith along with the #1 overall pick (that pitcher Stratsberg or whatever who is a STUD).

IDK who Kim Ng is and that Seattle wants her to take the job.

They have the inside track to good Latin American and Japanese players. They will sign Bobby V, who is one of the best managers in baseball.

Ichiro is Japanese so I’m guessing they know international players, screw it if I forgot how thier scouts wanted Kei Igawa, meanwhile Bobby V is a name NY knows so that’s why he is the best manager in baseball.

AL West is pathetic division. Their ownership will spend money and have some young talent.

IDK for a fact that they want to spend money even though they’ve been trying to get rid of money.

Seattle future > Yankees future. Factor in low stress, no interference from their owner, lack of competition in the AL West, and it is a no brainer.

I need to sound right and if I say Sea > NY most likely people will forget.

If Cashman comes back here over Seattle, he is dumber than I thought.

You know I really don’t want him back he couldn’t get me Santana, Harden or Sabathia.

  596. george September 28th, 2008 at 11:34 pm

“It was a petulant self-indulgent act, that hurt the team.”

yes. what a jerk Brown was. makes him the worst Yankee ever in my eyes, even exceeding Tony Womack in his overall Yankee badness.

that was the aftermath of the disastrous Lilly-Weaver trade. Weaver begat Brown.

  597. GreenBeret7 September 28th, 2008 at 11:35 pm

Ray, did NESN or wakefield say anything about why he asked for the game ball after the 5th inning?

  598. YankeeJosh September 28th, 2008 at 11:37 pm

    Trisha,

I’ll see if I have it around anywhere and can transfer to dvd. It was really beautiful, I agree.

Lilly sucked for so many yrs. after that deal, he never turned into anything until Pinella got him in the NL.

I was hoping Hughes would get into the game. Give him a chance to get a win. But oh well.
