It took him 18 years but Mike Mussina finally has a 20-win season. Good for him.

the best thing that happened to the yanks all season, was this win.

    good for the moose!

    Sad for the team…

  5. Shaun P. September 28th, 2008 at 5:53 pm

Hey Pete – please pass our congratulations on to Moose too. Bravo!

  6. Yankees Fan September 28th, 2008 at 5:53 pm

    Woo hoo!!!

    Now let’s go win #90!

    Way to go Brew Crew!

    MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSE congrats Moose.

  8. grafxkid September 28th, 2008 at 5:53 pm

This is awesome. Great day. Congrats Moooooooose. Hope you’re back next season!!

    HOF Ticket punched!

  10. mko September 28th, 2008 at 5:53 pm

    Very cool, great stuff!
    I’m happy for him.

I really hope the Yanks bring him back, not so sure about Pettitte though…

  11. kd September 28th, 2008 at 5:53 pm

    Congrats Moose!!

If Marte threw his last pitch as a Yankee, is he a type A free agent?

  12. EY September 28th, 2008 at 5:54 pm

Congrats Moose! Way to end the season on a positive note. So glad for such a classy guy!

I say if he doesn’t retire, then we resign Moose and Andy. They should be giving us a discount. And we throw a blank check at Sabathia. Next year: Sabathia Wang Joba Moose Pettitte for our rotation. When Joba’s hits innings limit, we move him into Pen and bring Hughes up.

  13. Fran September 28th, 2008 at 5:54 pm

    Well deserved Moose. Congratulations!

  14. jimmy1138 September 28th, 2008 at 5:55 pm

The Yanks can go out on a high note. Better than the Mets…
And finally this should end the “Mussina shouldn’t be in the HoF becuase he has no 20 win season or Cy Young” discussion.
I’m looking forward to Moose having a nice speech at Cooperstown.

  15. moosefan September 28th, 2008 at 5:55 pm

moose has been my favorite player since, as a yankees nut, i lived in baltimore for 5 years in the mid-90s.

he deserved it in other years, and i’m just glad to see him get it so we don’t have to listen to all the 20-game carping about him anymore

  16. Say it ain't so September 28th, 2008 at 5:55 pm

LOL at Pavano’s surprise hug to Moose, Mike was like ???

  17. JoeT 28 in 09.... So glad that I made it to the stadium from FL this year!! September 28th, 2008 at 5:55 pm

    MOOSSSEEEE!!!!

Who’s the best pitcher to never win 20 now??

    A: Who cares – MOOSSSSEEEE

  18. jennifer September 28th, 2008 at 5:56 pm

Congrats to Mike, he deserved it. I hope he is back next year. And If for some reason it isn’t done by January. I will personally lobby for him to return. I will see him than. :D

  19. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Real baseball fans vote September 28th, 2008 at 5:56 pm

You know, if Moose decides to hang em up, he’d be really good on TV.

  20. Dee September 28th, 2008 at 5:56 pm

Wow, great for Moose! Pete please pass along the fans’ congrats and excitement. I hope he comes back next year.

  21. John M September 28th, 2008 at 5:56 pm

Well done Moose one of the few bright spots this season

  22. E-Man September 28th, 2008 at 5:57 pm

    Congrats to Moose.

I hope you decide to pitch another year for the Yanks.

  23. ARX September 28th, 2008 at 5:57 pm

    Congratulations Moose!!!!!

6 TDs for Brett, Moose wins 20, and Mutts goin home again….this has been the perfect Sunday :)

  24. Nick in SF September 28th, 2008 at 5:57 pm

Could the juxtapostion between how Mo handled himself in that game, particularly given his situation, and how Paps handled himself be any starker?

  25. Jeff NJ September 28th, 2008 at 5:57 pm

Gotta say, this season is ending much nicer than the last 4 years. Hopefully next year ends with 27. Congrats Mike, you’ve been a great free agent signing and are welcome back in 2009.

  26. Joba the Great September 28th, 2008 at 5:58 pm

You’ve got a whole folder of these type of images, don’t you, Pete? Nice touch.

  27. jamesd September 28th, 2008 at 5:58 pm

Pete, it’s true Pedroia looks like a little leaguer.

But please, don’t eat him. We need him in the playoffs. He’s not enough to fill you. Not even close.

  28. Hank September 28th, 2008 at 5:58 pm

4th best record in the AL. Put the Yanks in the wildcard instead of Minny or the Chisox!

  29. Mooooooose September 28th, 2008 at 5:58 pm

    Congratulation Mike Mussina.

It couldnt have happened to a better guy!

    Moooooooooooooooooose!!!

  30. milk93rd September 28th, 2008 at 5:59 pm

Congrats to Moose. This is one of those times it’s good to have been wrong.

  31. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Real baseball fans vote September 28th, 2008 at 5:59 pm

Nick: Of course not–One’s a Yankee, one’s a red sox. That’s generally all you need to know.

  32. I am the Man from Manila September 28th, 2008 at 5:59 pm

    Congrats Michael Cole Mussina! Wooohoooooo!!!

  33. Rob NY September 28th, 2008 at 5:59 pm

After all he did for this team this year Moose earned every one of these 20. It couldn’t have come for a guy who deserved it more. A winner, a future hall of famer, a true Yankee. Hope he is back next year.

  34. TKinDC September 28th, 2008 at 5:59 pm

    Mooooooooooose!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    WTG – cranky Stanford Grad!

Oh well, guess you have to go for 300 now! :)

  36. Yankees Fan September 28th, 2008 at 6:00 pm

You know Jeff NJ, you’re right. I’m sad but not dejected. I guess I had time to let it all sink in slowly and the Yanks gave us some great moments down the stretch.

  37. mel September 28th, 2008 at 6:01 pm

Congrats to the Moose. Excellent job by the bullpen all year long.

C’mon Moose, come back for another go. We got Jose for another year. 30 wins is easy-peasy.

Can we have another game? 90 would looks so much better than 89.

    Rebecca,
No offense, but I don’t think so on the Moose and tv. He really measures what he says. That delay would kill the producers. And the makeup crew would have deal with his you know what under the eyes.

  38. mel September 28th, 2008 at 6:02 pm

    Nick in SF,

    Get your own word! :)

  39. Whitey Fraud September 28th, 2008 at 6:02 pm

    Two things to celebrate today!

  40. Art Vandelay September 28th, 2008 at 6:02 pm

Jeffg is right. Despite not getting into the playoffs, we’re seeing a nice ending to this season. Derek getting the all-time record for hits at the Stadium, Brett Gardner, Phil Coke, and Moose getting his 20th. Hopefully, these things will be a good omen for the future.

  41. Stormrider6 September 28th, 2008 at 6:03 pm

    Mel – tractor grease?

  42. Buddy Biancalana September 28th, 2008 at 6:03 pm

Nice Moose! See ya next year at the new Yankee stadium.

  43. Fran September 28th, 2008 at 6:03 pm

ARX – I was about to post the same thing. What a good sports day.

  44. sw September 28th, 2008 at 6:04 pm

Congratulations to Mike on his first 20 win season. I just got back from the game and he was awesome, I was shocked that he came out after six because he was cruising. Special thanks to Jonathan Papelbon for blowing up in the ninth inning and helping all Yankee fans breathe a little easier.

  45. Chuck September 28th, 2008 at 6:04 pm

    Moooooooooooooooooooose…

    Great to see.

And also get a little extra glee from watching Papelbon struggle in a meaningless game… is that wrong?

  46. mel September 28th, 2008 at 6:04 pm

    Stormrider,

Talking about the makeup? Putty sounds about right.

  47. Nick in SF September 28th, 2008 at 6:05 pm

Rebecca: Well sure, but forget the uniforms. One is pure class and the other… not so much.

mel: Moose might not be as measured as a commentator. You can’t always say what you’re really thinking as a player with teamates and employers and bulletin board material to consider. But hopefully it’s a moot point next year. Or a Moooooooose point.

trisha: well I’m glad I’m not a cruel, vicious, cheap shot artist 100% of the time.

  48. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Real baseball fans vote September 28th, 2008 at 6:05 pm

  51. mel September 28th, 2008 at 6:08 pm

I’ll be very disappointed if Yogi says, “This is like deja vu all again. This will always be my home.”

  56. Brandon (THE METS BULLPEN IS GANSTA !)..."Keep Manny away !" September 28th, 2008 at 6:10 pm

Some fan pull his hand away from Mike Piazza when he was giving the high-fives. He came out in a jersey w/ the white collar sticking out…ummm a little femine if you ask me.

  57. Rishi September 28th, 2008 at 6:11 pm

not as much pomp and circumstance as you would expect in the ceremony
Will all the papers write about it in the morning?

  58. mel September 28th, 2008 at 6:11 pm

    Nick,

    Juxtaposition. Just kidding, tho.

So did CC just pitch 3x in 9 days?

  59. ray (sox fan) September 28th, 2008 at 6:12 pm

Congratulations to Moose and the Yankee organization on his 20th win this year.

That is a nice accomplishment and well deserved.

  60. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Real baseball fans vote September 28th, 2008 at 6:14 pm

    Mel: Yes.

Brandon: Yoou remember when Piazza called the press conference just to say “I’m not gay”, right?

  61. Nick in SF September 28th, 2008 at 6:14 pm

Ok, mel. I can share ‘juxtaposition’. But you’ll have to pry ‘Venn diagram’ from my cold, dead keyboard.

  62. Pauly September 28th, 2008 at 6:15 pm

Gotta hand it to Moose, he really shut the critics from last year down. Hopefully he’ll come back for at least one more.

  63. wood is good September 28th, 2008 at 6:21 pm

Always loved you, Moose! We’re so happy for you!! Please, please do come back. We need you!

  64. Yankee Trader September 28th, 2008 at 6:21 pm

As badly as we played this year, except for the 8 game stretch after the All-Star break, and the month of September, we’re finishing with the fourth best record in the AL, the 2nd most wins in the AL East and the 2nd best road record in the AL after the Angels. How did we manage to do this, scoring 200 runs less than last year??

Thanks to Moose and Mo, or MoMoose, we’re finishing the season on a high note, and playing in the best new stadium ever built next year, an attractive place to play in, for I hope Sabathia!

  65. Paul September 28th, 2008 at 6:21 pm

well, that was great! anyone got time for some more fenway franks?

  66. E-Rod September 28th, 2008 at 6:21 pm

Funny watching this ceremony and honoring the Mets Greats and Shea Stadium moments… their best players/moments are not even comparable to top 15 ones at Yankee Stadium. Talk about a 2nd class franchise.

  67. mel September 28th, 2008 at 6:22 pm

Maybe Piazza didn’t realize the Village People theme for NY rookie hazing was for the Yankees, not the Mets?

  68. COL 88 September 28th, 2008 at 6:23 pm

I thoroughly enjoyed watching Papelbon’s fit. Instantly went to the top of my favorite memories of this year.

  69. Brandon (THE METS BULLPEN IS GANSTA !)..."Keep Manny away !" September 28th, 2008 at 6:23 pm

WTF are the Mets doing now? What’s this stepping on the plate thing?

They are trying to show the big team how scoring a run works to your advantage. I’m just wondering how long it’s going to take for the great Piazza and Seaver to walk off the field.

  70. Paul September 28th, 2008 at 6:23 pm

    Hold the mustard, Papelbon

  71. Betsy September 28th, 2008 at 6:23 pm

Why would this be Marte’s last inning for the Yankees? I find it hard to believe they would trade Tabata for him (as much as his stock dropped) only to let him go. Do they have an option?

In any case, I’m soooooo happy for Moose. He has had a tremendous career and he truly deserved this win; it would have been heartbreaking had he fallen short. The man was phenomenal this year – his numbers are terrific for an ace in his prime, nevermind a 39 year old. It’s been a real pleasure watching him this year……and also reading his humorous comments. He always made things interesting!

  72. Tom September 28th, 2008 at 6:24 pm

Moose better stay away from PA until after election day. Sara Palin may take a shot at him.

  73. Oddessy September 28th, 2008 at 6:26 pm

I gained a lot of respect for Mets fans today.

They collapse for the 2nd consecutive year and are missing the playoffs and its a gloomy, rainy day and they still have a full house to watch their ceremony.

  74. Tom September 28th, 2008 at 6:26 pm

Marte may be a type A free agent. If he leaves and signs with a contender (which is a possibility) the yanks would get 2 picks.

  75. thomasbp September 28th, 2008 at 6:27 pm

Grats to Moose — My only regret is that it couldn’t happen in the stadium where you could get your well deserved applause. You were one of the bright spots this season — I hope to see you come back to help open up the new house, preferably as a player but if not then as a distinguished guest.

  76. BBFan September 28th, 2008 at 6:27 pm

    Congratulations Moose.
Also, with all the adversity faced, team still did well.
We won 89 games and there is a chance we will end with 90. No shame in that.

  77. Brandon (THE METS BULLPEN IS GANSTA !)..."Keep Manny away !" September 28th, 2008 at 6:27 pm

Can we sign then trade Marte ?

  78. 86w183 September 28th, 2008 at 6:28 pm

Mike Mussina has been a class act for his entire 18 year MLB career and the Yanks are fortunate to have had him in pinstripes for eight of them. Congrats on an incredible season and career.

I wonder what kind of odds Vegas would have given on Mussina winning 20. Or Pedroia winning MVP. One thing for sure, the Mets choking in late September would have been about 1:5 !!!

Sabathia is a man. Did you see him at the end? His last heater was 95… on three days rest!

  79. BBFan September 28th, 2008 at 6:28 pm

Other than Seaver is there any one in the hall of fame with a Mets cap?

  80. Rob NY September 28th, 2008 at 6:29 pm

So after the gem Sabbathia spun today… and 3 days ago… anybody here not sold on trying to put the full court press on this guy? I love his fire I love his attitude and I love the way he competes, We need him.

  81. Tom September 28th, 2008 at 6:29 pm

Barandon: Sure, if they pick up his option a la Gary Sheffield

  82. Redding September 28th, 2008 at 6:29 pm

No way this is Marte’s last inning… Brian didn’t trade all that for him and Nady just for this year.

We’ve been trying to get him for years and with the nature of how up and down relief pitching is, I’d keep him around for sure. He is still a weapon against lefties. He obviously is tired… he pitched more innings than he did all of last year before he was even traded here. The Pirates abused him.

Can never have enough quality left handers.

  83. Ed - looking forward to 2009 September 28th, 2008 at 6:29 pm

Can we sign then trade Marte ?

    but for whom?

  84. BBFan September 28th, 2008 at 6:29 pm

If so, Cashman deserves more than 4 years :)

Omar is speaking to the media on SNY

  86. Tom September 28th, 2008 at 6:30 pm

    oops I ment Brandon

  87. 86w183 September 28th, 2008 at 6:30 pm

Marte is not a FA… he has an expensive option next year of $ 6 million and I suspect the Yanks will try to do something in the three-year, $ 12 mill range to get the annual cost down. Would be absurd to let him walk over roughly the same $$ they paid Farnswurst this season.

Once that’s done they could trade Marte, but why?

  88. Yankee Trader September 28th, 2008 at 6:31 pm

Would like to see Larry Bowa and Willie Randolph brought back as coaches for 3rd/bench.

Hoping that calls from Jeter, Rivera, Posada in the offseason will entice the free agents we need to improve, to come play for us.

Fix our starting pitching, preferably by adding two free agents, which will enable us to trade some of our pitching depth in the minors for young athletic position players.

  89. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Real baseball fans vote September 28th, 2008 at 6:32 pm

How did we manage to do this, scoring 200 runs less than last year??

Because this year we actually pitched worth a damn.

It baffles me, when you put it that way, that we don’t get in–and it makes me feel like it’s not fair, but then I remember than in 2000 if the playoff situation is the four best instead of what it is, we don’t win that World Series.

  90. 86w183 September 28th, 2008 at 6:32 pm

Gary Carter a Met in Cooperstown?

Did Ron Swaboda get in? Art Shamsky?

  91. Dave D September 28th, 2008 at 6:32 pm

Remember… Rumor out of Pittsburgh is the Pirates feared he would accept arbitration if it was offered for him because nobody is giving him a long term deal for more money. Thats why he was even traded. Ditto Pudge.

  92. Brandon (THE METS BULLPEN IS GANSTA !)..."Keep Manny away !" September 28th, 2008 at 6:33 pm

    but for whom?

It depends what do we want, I bet you deal him to a team in the NL they would give back talent. Rockies will lose Fuentes, Marte if we resign him becomes a huge asset in trade talks.

no one was more down on mussina the past few years than me. i said he should wear a pin striped dress when he pitched. i called him a coward because he refused to protect his own hitters if the opposing pitcher hit them.

i was very happy to hear mussina won his 20th. why? why not? he finally gave up on refusing to ptich inside. i didn’t hate mussina. i hated his refusal to pitch inside. if mussina made this adjustment 5 years ago , he’d likely already have 300 wins.

the yankees have other veterans who are doing some things just as stubborn as what mussina was doing. arod’s refusal to learn to change his swing or approach when he has two strikes or men in scoring position hurt both him and the yankees.

mussina’s adjustments should be inspiration for any veteran to look at themselves to reinvent themselves. the yankees are always going to have aging stars. they need to adjust the way mussina has done. jeter himself will have to start looking at his game. all veterans eventually are going to be in this situation.

congrats to mussina for setting the example.

The 2009 draft is very weak.

I’d rather keep Marte around and get the picks in 2010. We’re getting Abreu picks anyway.

Whats the rush to get rid of him? Relief pitching is so year to year… no guarentee that Bruney, Coke, Veras, Edwar etc. continue their dominance next year. And no guarentee Sanchez and Melancon are going to be dominant right away. And who knows about MO and his shoulder?

Getting rid of relief pitching is not the best way to go. Marte has a proven track record, one mediocre 1\2 season when he was hurt and tired should not diminish that.

  101. 86w183 September 28th, 2008 at 6:38 pm

At the moment the Yankees have a better record than two division winners and could match the records of the Phillies and Brewers. That would mean only four teams ended the season with a better record, yet they weren’t one of the eight to make the post-season.

That’s not complaining, that’s telling facts. I don’t bemoan their fate. Sometimes the league/divisional structure works for you and sometime it doesn’t. This was a disappointing season in transitioning to try and get younger, but it wasn’t a disaster even through the great finish is a bit of a mirage.

Way to go Mike! Just to say thanks for being a Real Bright Light and MVP in an otherwise lacklustre Yankee season. Bet he is even more pleased that the ‘most wins without winning 20′ epithet has gone…course now its Oldest player……
    Hall of Fame 4 me

To any of my fellow jets fans… Does Vernon Gholston actually exist? I feel like if he makes a tackle after the bye week, the world might freeze over.

The Cubs couldd be considered NL favorites to advance to the World Series.

If the world freezes over, it won’t be because Gholston made a tackle.

  104. pettitte September 28th, 2008 at 6:40 pm

Thanks Rebecca, but this isn’t the first time the Cubs have been favorites going into the postseason.

When do the Brewers start their series in Philly? Hope the Phillies win 3 straight, to preserve what’s left of Sabathia’s arm.

Here’s the scenario, that could help us sign Sabathia and keep him off the West Coast:

Dodgers resign Manny and Furcal, and don’t want to spend any more money.
Angels don’t sign F-Rod or any other closer.
Giants don’t have the money to spend on another huge contract ala Zito.
Oakland and Seattle should certainly be out of the mix.
Rivera calls CC, tells him how great it is to play for the Yankees, in a new stadium and that he’ll be back for two more seasons as the closer. Of course a Santana type contract won’t hurt either!!

What happens to the rotation will affect Marte.

Imagine a scenario where you whiff on CC, AJ, Andy, and Moose. You’ll see Coke in the rotation. If things work out like they’re supposed to, you can keep Coke in the pen. Right now, he’s better than Marte.

I agree that we’ll have some nice pieces to move if necessary, even if it costs us.

No, but I’m referring to the possibility that if they did make the world series that would cause the world to freeze over before gholston’s tackle.

Golden opportunity missed for the boys from Queens.

Yankees have been dead for 6 weeks and were not going to the postseason and there was turmoil surrounding the team. Mets had the opportunity to recapture the city like 86 and have it all to themselves. They had a chance to capture all the buzz and media attention in the city and promote their new ballpark and gain rival sponsorships from the Yankees and sell luxury boxes and use this postseason birth as a spring board.

Now, all that is gone. Mets will be on the backpages allright, but for the wrong reasons. A rare bad year for the Yankees and the Mets, moving into a new stadium failed to capitalize on the marketing opportunities. That will sting Omar and Wilpon.

  109. X-Mann September 28th, 2008 at 6:51 pm

If we miss out on CC, AJ, Andy, and Moose… wow. Depending on what the Orioles do in the off-season, last place is a realistic possibility, 4th place is a guarantee. Heck even if we miss out on CC and AJ, we’re a 3rd place team.

  110. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and guess what: Santana is not coming here September 28th, 2008 at 6:52 pm

    Moooooooooooooooooooose

Rob NY – I am definitely ready to have CC in pinstripes.

Just thought I’d add my blessing despite being “delusional, thoughtless, and juvenile.”

  114. Tank September 28th, 2008 at 6:55 pm

So will the Brew Crew start CC in game 1 in Philly on Wednesday? (2 days rest)

  115. Marc W September 28th, 2008 at 6:56 pm

    MOOSE = HOF!!!!

  116. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Real baseball fans vote September 28th, 2008 at 6:57 pm

Tank: Wouldn’t surprise me, but my guess is they’ll go with Gallardo and save CC for game two.

Moose – can’t wait to see you next year!

I know people have mentioned Moose’s brother having a blog. Maybe someone can tell him to tell Moose to sometime take a look at the good wishes from this date. And if someone does -

PLEEEEEEEEEEEASE COME BACK NEXT YEAR MOOSE. WE NEED YOU!!!!!

  118. YankeesLuv September 28th, 2008 at 7:20 pm

  120. real lousy chowdah September 28th, 2008 at 7:33 pm

The ultimate in greed. Every game scheduled for today has been played but a meaningless game must go on.
Can’t lose out on concession sales in Bahhhstin by all means.

  121. Keith FL September 28th, 2008 at 8:35 pm

Congrats Moose!!! Its great you won your 20th game where you almost had the prefect game in Boston…the karma from this will continue now that you have your 20 win season…You will get your first World Series Championship with the Yankees next season and then win your 300th game with the Yankees…no longer can anyone write that your career has been defined in almost terms…great job and here we come Yankees for 2009 we will be back and better..this is the off-season we have been waiting for!!!

  122. kasey September 28th, 2008 at 10:28 pm
