JOINT STATEMENT FROM HAL AND HANK STEINBRENNER NEW YORK YANKEES CO-CHAIRPERSONS
RE: RE-SIGNING OF SR. VICE PRESIDENT AND GENERAL MANAGER BRIAN CASHMAN
“Before we could move forward as an organization this off-season, we needed to come to a resolution on the person who would hold the important position of general manager and allow us to make another run at a 27th World Championship. We are thrilled that Brian has accepted to renew his commitment to this organization for at least three more years.
“Holding the position of general manager for any Major League team is a challenge. But to do so in the great city of New York, where baseball is passionately followed 12 months a year, you must possess a number of unique attributes.
“Brian has shown throughout his Yankees career that he has the dedication, integrity and know-how needed to perform—and succeed—in this environment. Having him in place allows us to begin an off-season of hard work, and we are pleased he will be working hand-in-hand with us to bring the New York Yankees back to the postseason.â€

Cashman, the GM since 1998, is to hold a news conference Wednesday.
“I know I’ve said it before, but it’s an incredible opportunity and honor to hold the title of general manager for the New York Yankees,” Cashman said in a statement issued by the team. “With it comes a great responsibility to ownership, the people who wear the uniform and our fan base.
“I’ve got a job to finish here. That’s the bottom line.
“I consider coming off a season where we didn’t reach the playoffs for the first time since 1993 as a personal challenge. I’ve never been one to run from a challenge, and I look forward to having the chance to go after this thing again.”
this is great news. he has been incredible with trades. hopefully, he will hire a czar/tsar of pitching that can assist him with all pitching-related decisions.
Brian seems like a great, obviously likeable guy, but he hasnt done much lately…Here’s to hoping this is a great move!
So happy to be wrong.
Thank goodness. Relief here. Glad Cashman is staying.
question for anyone in the know:
why is it that some of the beat writers are saying that Jeremy Bleich will need TJ in the offseason. If he needs TJ, is there any reason at all to risk further damage to other areas, including the elbow, by sending him to Hawaii? How can that line of thinking make any sense at all? Are they getting Bleich mixed up with Bittle (who the Yanks didn’t sign)?
i know some of the beat writers know nothing about the prospects, but come on now, this is the second time I’ve seen this
Good news!!
Love the political correctness. But that’s just me.
Glad to have Cashman back–I don’t think he’s perfect, but he’s done well for us more often than not and with what looks to be an eventful off season, we can now focus on CC/Tex/Burnett/Whomever
annnnddddd…..the yankees off season is off
Thaks for staying, Cash. Hope Hank doesn’t f*&% it up for you.
Well, let’s see what he can do. Maybe this year was a big learning experience.
Congrats Cash, now go get CC.
nice to hear.
i’m glad hank + co. didn’t make any rash decisions
NicE!!!!!!!!!!
Hooray!
I’m glad that Cash is back. This should be good.
And how did the live blog go? The video wouldn’t work for me until after it finished. If I’ve got time, I’ll go back and watch it later.
nice job!
great- go get cc and manny and lets win the whole thing
A-Rod just tried opting out again to make a headline as well.
“Congrats Cash, now go get CC.”
Could not have said it better myself.
eh…. I still would prefer a baseball guy as the GM… but he hasn’t done a bad job at all so lets see what he’s got
Hank and Hal released a joint statement with no shots taken at anyone? With class and political correctness and no outrageous comments?
Maybe it was released without Hank’s consent lol
now go get willy for the 3rd base coach, tino hitting coach
I’m thrilled he’s returning. Brian’s plan for transitioning the Yanks has been corect. Given that he started with a depleted farm system and many players past (or approaching) their expiration dates, this has to take some time to work.
Now Cash all I ask is DO NOT GO ON A FA SPENDING SPREE !
CC Sabathia Yes
Manny No, Teix No, Sheets hell no, AJ depends on price, Oli depends on price.
Stop selling the farm short at the deadline. Sell the vets if there is a legit offer.
Al,
Add Burnett (if Mussina and Andy don’t come back) and Kotchman to that list and we are good to go!
Oliver Perez over Sheets, Manny, Tex
LMAO
Great. The man who signed Jaret Wright is coming back. So happy, dillweed!
This is indeed great news.
If we miss out on CC and Burnett then GET DEMPSTER!!! Especially if he has a good postseason!
Best news in months!
If he gets Dempster I’ll personally kick his ass
“A-Rod just tried opting out again to make a headline as well.”
C’mon – he’ll wait until 6th game of WS.
Brandon
trading some prospects for young players is just like waiting for the kids except the young players coming in are a few years older.
it might be good for a trade or two.
they can sign a few free agents and get lucky but use the minor league surplus to bring in a few players.that is what it is there for.
very nice !
“JOINT STATEMENT FROM HAL AND HANK STEINBRENNER NEW YORK YANKEES CO-CHAIRPERSONS”
here’s a question for the grammer police (and i know you’re out there), but how come it isn’t CO-CHAIRPEOPLE? when do you use PERSONS instead of PEOPLE?
“Al,
Add Burnett (if Mussina and Andy don’t come back) and Kotchman to that list and we are good to go!”
Fair enough. I like Burnett and if he is willing to come here with a 3 yr deal with a team option I’d sign him. Kotchman is very good but I suspect Atlanta views him in high regard.
Nobody else noticed that the bar has been re-set? Now it is getting back into the post-season.
Surprise, or not a surprise?
“If he gets Dempster I’ll personally kick his ass”
If Cash gets Dempster, it obviously means he failed at getting CC, Burnett and Lowe. That would not be a good way to open up the first year of his new contract.
a few free agent pitchers and a few trades and we are good to go.
get billingsley,sabathia,mclouth,tex.
“here’s a question for the grammer police”
I think the grammar police will be visiting you first
bru it’s not that, it’s how he holds on to the wrong ones at times, and then when there is a good offer for an established vet who is on the decline he refuses to make that move, Hideki Matsui/Johnny Damon and Jason Giambi for example at what point could have landed legit young players for a team in a playoff hunt but he refused to sell them. That’s what pisses me off about him ! Echoing rebuilding and then come trade deadline he sells a player like Tabata for quick fixes and players who will require max contract as soon as they hit FA. That’s my beef. Anyway I’ll be back later I’m 65/35 in favor of Cash returning but he has some work to do and one of them better not be dealing Robi Cano especially how he stepped up when the season was done.
“get billingsley,sabathia,mclouth,tex.”
Sure – right after he turns the water into wine.
at one point*
hi i am new to the blog.
now that cash is back, will he let gardner and melky battle it out for the centerfield job or trade for mclouth or dejesus? first base, throw bunch of money for texieria or trade for adam larouche or nick johnson? rotation wise will he trade cano for cain or another young starter? personally i think cc is going to the dodgers and burnett is using the yankees to resign with the jays….
Brandon:
i agree.it is going to be very interesting going forward.
““get billingsley,sabathia,mclouth,tex.â€
Sure – right after he turns the water into wine.”
lol. But seriously I would do Hughes and Cano for Kemp and Billingsley.
or cano for billingsley and hughes for mclouth then sign sabathia and tex.
billingsley replaces hughes.
Atlanta is not dealing Kotchman, they now have 40M to spend on pitching, starters, especially to go with Jurrgens, as Smoltz, Glavine and Hudson are all injured. Burnett might be a possibility for them..
Do not think Cano will be traded, UNLESS, we’re unsuccessful in the starting pitcher FA market and need to trade for an established starter. Our only real positional player trading chips are Cano, then Nady.
I am thrilled with this news. It takes a special kind of person to succeed with the Yankees, and Cashman has proven that he has what it takes. This is a crucial off season for the Yankees, and it would have been a nightmare for someone else to try to step in and make key decisions right away.
At first glance, the brothers Steinbrenner seemed to be making a ringing endorsement of Cashman–until they got to the part about working “hand-in-hand with us”–have they just put Cashman on a short leash? Or are they determined to add more voices to the pre-decision process? Thoughts?
“lol. But seriously I would do Hughes and Cano for Kemp and Billingsley.”
Sure – but would the dodgers do it?
Uh, what a big surprise.
Billingsley is the Dodgers ace and they might lose Brad Penny, Maddux and Lowe. Doubt Cano and Hughes could pry him loose, without Kemp. Need to think realistically.
First job should be, besides deciding on Girardi’s coaching staff, is to gauge interest, and go out and sign two quality free agent starters. Then they would have the flexibility to trade some of their minor league pitching for young athletic position players.
They might also look at a one year older stopgap good defensive cf’er, with some pop, because there are some real good outfielders in the 2010 FA market-Bay, Crawford, Holliday, possibly Dye and Ordonez, to play the corners if Damon and Nady not resigned and Jackson takes over in center.
I’m not going to join the love fest here. I see this as yet another example of the Yankees being overly conservative and risk averse. Did they even look at other GM options? I doubt it. Hopefully, they can find someone who knows something about pitching, because Cashman clearly doesn’t. It wasn’t Cashman who built the championship teams of the late 90s. So remind me exactly why this is good news?? Is it simply because he can work with the Steinbrothers?? Personally, I’m disappointed.
Thoughts on giving Rocco Baldelli an incentive laden deal to play center?
Awesome! Good for Cash…
Brian Cashman is awful. He is ruining this franchise.
Here are some of the “great players” he brought on board…
Randy Johnson
Kevin Brown
Kei Igawa
Carl Pavano
Jaret Wright
Clemens (second time)
Kyle Farnsworth
Javier Vazquez
Jeff Weaver
And thats just the pitchers!!!
Not to mention blowing the deal on Santana, and also wanting Giambi instead of Ortiz.
Cashman took a dynasty and ran them into the ground. I can’t believe how many of you are thrilled he’s coming back.
Be prepared for more futily with a $250 million payroll to boot.
Bill and zman are exactly right. Cashman has no clue when it comes to pitching prospects. They kept dicking with Joba until he finally broke and he gambleed the frachise this year on two unknown rookie starters. I am not happy that he is back leading the team.Other than Wang what has he done to strengthen the staff? Also you left out Latroy Hawkins plus all of the pitchers we drafted this year from the college who either didnt sign or needed Tommy John surgey–how do you reward this guy?
