Girardi thrilled that Cashman is back

Peter Abraham
September
30

Just spoke to Joe Girardi, who was nice enough to return a call a few hours after he arrived home in Florida. Until he landed, he didn’t know for sure that Brian Cashman would return as GM.

“I found out around 5 o’clock,” he said. “I was thrilled.”

Girardi said having Cashman back at GM was a huge relief. “I think we worked well together and we share a vision for how this organization should move forward. I mean, he hired me as the manager. I wanted him to be there.”

Girardi said the organizational meetings would likely begin in Tampa in the middle of next month.

“Brian sounded excited when we talked. He wants to get started on doing what we need to do and I’m right there with him,” Girardi said. “I’m looking forward to seeing what we do. This was the first order of business and it worked out well.”

  1. Clint

I’d sign Pudge to a 2 yr/$14 million doller deal to play 1st base if he’s open to that.

  2. you gotta have faith (well, theres always next year...)(MOOSE FOR PRESIDENT!)

    lol clint

please tell me you were joking!

  3. RalphieD

id love to be a fly on the walls of those meetings

  4. JoeT 28 in 09.... So glad that I made it to the stadium from FL this year!!

That’s why Cashman is the GM and not you Clint lol

It really is awesome though that we knew Cashman was the GM before Girardi did – awesome work as always Pete!!

  5. Bill

What has Cashman done to deserve this?! He is an awful GM!

  6. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

I mean, he hired me as the manager. I wanted him to be there.”

Heh. If only we got this honesty during the season.

  7. JoeT 28 in 09.... So glad that I made it to the stadium from FL this year!!

Bill – I definitely would prefer a baseball guy as the GM. As long as Cashman listens to his advisers he’ll be good though. I really think that Girardi has told Cashman exactly what he wants to do with this team though. Cash can handle the rest…. We’ll see how it works out

  8. E-Rod

Girardi knows that if Cashman had left and Buck had come in, he would be on shaky ground. If we got off to a slow start, Buck would fire Girardi and name himself manager AND GM.

  9. Bill

JoeT – The Yankees have gotten worse every season that Cashman has been in charge.

    Look at these rediculous signings…

    Randy Johnson
    Kevin Brown
    Kei Igawa
    Carl Pavano
    Jaret Wright
    Clemens (second time)
    Kyle Farnsworth
    Javier Vazquez
    Jeff Weaver

    And thats just the pitchers!!!

Not to mention blowing the deal on Santana, and also wanting Giambi instead of Ortiz.

Cashman took a dynasty and ran them into the ground.

  10. Bronx Jeers

This is already starting to feel like last year when we were all thrilled just to have the same old guys return.

    2008 big signings:

    ARod- oy vey
    Posada- 4 years?!
    Pettite – alright
    Mo- Whew

    2009

Pettite- Order an extra ice machine.
    Abreu – Pad those walls!!
Marte- Lets take the Pepsi challenge on that
Giambi – for comic relief and to pick up the tab

  11. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

    …Holy John Danks, Batman

  12. Bill

Can we please get Stick Michael back in charge?

  13. you gotta have faith (well, theres always next year...)(MOOSE FOR PRESIDENT!)

this “playoff” game is boringgggg lol

  14. NITRO

Has anyone ever thrown a no hitter in a one game playoff game?

Danks will tonight. His stuff is just nasty.

  15. harwood

“Marte- Lets take the Pepsi challenge on that”

That was funny but I have higher hopes for Coke.

  16. vtred

Stick wanted Santana, he knew what he was talking about. Next time Cashman should listen to him. He built the dynasty while Cashman was standing on the sidelines.

  17. Al from BK( Brett Favre 12 TD's 4 INT in 4 games. CC Sabathia: 17-10, 2.70 ERA, 251 K's-253 IP, 10 CG's 5 Shut-Outs.)

Hmmm alot of people reposting in this thread. We get it you hate Cashman now move on. If Cash signs CC everyone in here will be singing his praises and calling for his contract extension.

  18. filthy slider

The meetings start in the middle of next month, the meetings would have started today if George was still alive.

  19. vinny-b (jerry manuel says "Brett Favre is gangsta!"

    wonderful to know.

thank you for the update, pete.

  20. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

    Uh, George is still alive.

Unless you know something that all the eat writers, and ESPN have missed.

  21. trisha - BRING BOBBY BACK!

Bill, without going over your entire list, Randy Johnson and Jason Giambi were totally George Steinbrenner. So if you’re going to be down on Cashman, make sure you’re down on him for the right reasons.

P.S. to anyone else who thinks Brian is a mistake – he was around for the four world championships also.

  22. trisha - BRING BOBBY BACK!

Monday morning quarterbacking is always a breeze.

That, and nobody has ANY way to know how Santana would have performed. As someone aptly pointed out today, the Mets had Santana and they’re not in the postseason either.

    Just my opinion.

    GO TWINS!

  23. R-Tek

If Cashman doesn’t get CC or AJ/Teixeria, there is going to be an awful lot of unhappy Yankee fans.

His hair is already gray from the stress Hank gave him, he can tolerate a little more barking.

  24. Bronx Jeers

    What is more shocking?

Cashman’s announcement on thew 2nd day or the fact that Girardi returned Petes call?

  25. Al from BK( Brett Favre 12 TD's 4 INT in 4 games. CC Sabathia: 17-10, 2.70 ERA, 251 K's-253 IP, 10 CG's 5 Shut-Outs.)

Johan wouldn’t have saved this team from its lack of clutch hitting. If you need proof look at the Mets he couldn’t help David Wright hit a fly ball with a runner on third. A great pitcher can only win the games in which he pitches. Unless Johan is also a cleanup hitter who hits in the clutch as well his contributions wouldn’t have mattered

  26. patrick max

i really thinks Danks will get the no hitter

  27. James 3D

    Al,

If we miss out on CC, passing on Santana is going to look even more devastating. And now that Joba’s shoulder is giving him problems, you have no idea what will happen to him next year. Plus Mussina is probably going to retire. Where are we going to get our ace from? Hell, where are we going to get pitching from? Another year of Wang and pray for rain?

What has Cashman done to deserve this?! He is an awful GM!

This is a ridiculous comment. He does everything we ask of him. We want the big name, he gets it. We want to go younger, he does it. He is a great GM and i am glad he came back.

  29. randy l

just an aside but from what i’ve heard over the years, don cooper, the white sox pitching coach, would kill to be the yankee pitching coach.

that collision at home was twins baseball. it took a perfect throw to get him, and the runner just hammered the catcher. good play all around.

  30. harwood

Not trading for Santana could still be Cashmans greatest move.

  31. t-rock

I have no problem trading Alfred E. Newman this off-season for some pitching or position help.

  32. The Future

Cash does what the Steinbrenners wanted. He didnt want A-Rod. Hank did.

  33. Y26

    Exactly.

Hank/Hal overruled Cashman on A-Rod, Posada, Rivera, and Torre.

    They can overrule him anytime.

  34. trisha - BRING BOBBY BACK!

Burnett wants to play for the Yankees. Yankees could do worse. So there’s one potential FA. I believe Hughes will be ready for the rotation (my opinion based on watching him). There are three potential members of the rotation. We’re not sure about Joba and won’t be, though “conventional wisdom” believed that with the Yankees out of the running he didn’t see any need to blow out his arm. And don’t forget he was checked by the best, and we all know the diagnosis.

Is it possible the Yankees will give Aceves a look-see?

There’s plenty of time to figure out the rotation. I wouldn’t panic at this point.

I also believe the Yankee players are going to come out with a different attitude. I think they had come to believe that making the playoffs was an automatic. Perhaps this is just what they needed to fire them up again.

  35. Al from BK( Brett Favre 12 TD's 4 INT in 4 games. CC Sabathia: 17-10, 2.70 ERA, 251 K's-253 IP, 10 CG's 5 Shut-Outs.)

    “Al,

Obviously I was for the Santana trade and when it didn’t happen I was upset. However giving up Phil Hughes who is still going to be a decent pitcher for Santana who regardless of what “experts” say has experienced a drop in velocity and overall dominance a long with 150 million would have been too much. If CC is signed this all become a non issue if he doesn’t then things get ugly. However at this point in their careers I’d rather have CC over Santana and I think waiting a year for CC will have been worth it if Cash can seal the deal.

  36. RalphieD

i like cash…no problem with him…seems like too many people dont like him just because they can…cause you know, if you bash the gm it makes you feel better as a “fan”…and please stop whining about not getting santana, it got old 6 months ago

  37. trisha - BRING BOBBY BACK!

“I have no problem trading Alfred E. Newman this off-season for some pitching or position help.”

t-rock, do you think we could get anything for him? I’d be all for that too.

  38. randy l

span can fly. this could be interesting.

  39. vinny-b (jerry manuel says "Brett Favre is gangsta!"

y26: I believe Cashman wasn’t too attached, to the idea of Torre returning.

    don’t have any proof, tho.

  40. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

    Fast game.

  41. Al from BK( Brett Favre 12 TD's 4 INT in 4 games. CC Sabathia: 17-10, 2.70 ERA, 251 K's-253 IP, 10 CG's 5 Shut-Outs.)

I listened to Mattingly on WFAN and he sounded so sad about not getting picked as Yankees coach. In hindsight I think the Yanks should have made the obvious choice and picked Donnie. The players aren’t responding well to Girardi IMO.

  42. Davey Dave The Seagull Slayer

“I believe Hughes will be ready for the rotation (my opinion based on watching him).”

On which one of his 2 starts are you basing this on because I know you’re not talking about his April work.

  43. trisha - BRING BOBBY BACK!

As someone who can always find a positive in just about every situation, the positive in our not being in the postseason, for me personally, is that I can actually concentrate on the games with a detached interest! No nervousness, no anxiety.

    :)

    GO TWINKIES!

  44. vinny-b (jerry manuel says "Brett Favre is gangsta!"

    eckersley = crazy man

  45. Davey Dave The Seagull Slayer

I am also glad the Yankess did not make the playoffs as now i can work on my needlepoint!

I get a similar joy every time I lose the lottery. No expensive accountant fees to pay!

  46. trisha - BRING BOBBY BACK!

Davey, well certainly I can look at the way he pitched those two games for the Yankees as a marked improvement over the way he had pitched earlier, but then we found out he had an injury so how much should we pay attention to those earlier starts?

I think Hughes has tremendous stuff plus a tremendous work ethic and a ton of maturity. So I just have a feeling that he will be ready to make the rotation is all.

  47. t-rock

    trisha,

Doubt it— what team would want Alfred? The guy hasn’t shown is a ML caliber pitcher. He is already 24 and was reputed to be very polished and ML ready without must time needed to adjust. He was a guy who had superior control and a finished product. The fact that he struggled so much when he came up shows how much he sucks. He had no control, no out pitch, nothing.

  48. Yankee Trader

    Time to move on:
Girardi is the manager, Cashman the GM. George was the one who pushed for many of the players:
Giambi-then George said let’s get Ortiz-Cashman had to remind him we just signed Giambi for 1B/DH
    George wanted Sheffield/Cash and Torre-Vlad
    George always wanted Randy Johnson.

The Yankees are moving in the right direction to compete in the AL East-Two quality FA pitchers would be a start, then consider trading some of your minor league pitching talent for young athletic position players.

  49. trisha - BRING BOBBY BACK!

Davey, I didn’t say you had to share my feelings and experiences. Some people have bitter disappointment they haven’t yet gotten over, others were over it quickly since elimination came as no surprise. To each her or his own.

  50. Alfred E. Kennedy

You guys will be lucky to get a backup catcher for Kennedy…

Atleast he has a career at Mad Magazine when he realizes he isin’t very good at baseball.

  51. trisha - BRING BOBBY BACK!

    t-rock

    He is pretty dismal!

    :D

  52. Bam Bam Balboni

Do people not realize that the Santana deal was not a 1 year deal…why don’t we give it a few years and see how it all unfolds

  57. trisha - BRING BOBBY BACK!

    Dang!

I’m gonna feel so bad for the Twins if they lose this game.

  58. vinny-b (jerry manuel says "Brett Favre is gangsta!"

don’t care what anyone say. TBS = excellent coverage/camerawork

it feels like you at the game.

  59. Alfred E. Kennedy

Did Kennedy hold a press conference at the end of the season to tell us how he had a terrific year and had filthy stuff in the big leagues?

YEA CASH HAS A JOB TO FINISH, WE FINISHED IN THIRD PLACE THIS YR. When he is done with us, we will be in dead last.

    WORST MOVE EVER!!!!!

Will everyone please stop with the whooole every mistake made under cashman had someone else pulling the strings? Is the guy untouchable? Somehow being in the organization as some assistant during the yrs we were building a dynasty, had something to do with him. But since cash has been made the GM, fans blame all his mistakes on everybody but cashman. Im sick of it – everything we did last yr is on cashmans head ALL OF IT. He has the power. No more oooh but the steinbrenners made him do it. BY THE END OF THESE 3 YRS, We will have went from a dynasty to a lauching stock with this moron at the helm. I hope he is forced into making group decisions with ppl that actually know baseball.

  61. NITRO

I know he played in Texas and hes a head case but Milton Bradley could play 1B or corner outfield.

  63. Betsy

Needless to say, I’m thrilled Brian is back; I only hope that he was honest with Hank and aired out whatever problems he may have had with him so that we can start with a clean slate and Cash can get back to running the team instead of having to put out stupid brush fires.

I missed Michael Kay with Buster Olney; can anyone summarize? Did they mention AJ Burnett and where he may go?

    thanks!

  64. RalphieD

thome knocked the fruit punch outta that one

  65. Ed - looking forward to 2009

    AL -

Milton can’t play 1B and isn’t one. He’s an outfielder.

  69. Bronx Jeers

    Trisha,

I really want Hughes to thrive. And as a NY Yankee. It’s just that his most impressive work in the bigs was his playoff appearance last fall when he came in and saved the day for The Rockette. But even that high pressure achievement did not translate. In reality it is not his glimpses of success that is going to make Hughes realize his potential but rather his ability to overcome his failures. He seemed to be heading in the right direction with the late work you mention but he’s very far from the finish line. Then again he is so very young and has a lot of time. It’s critical for the Yankees to not have to rely on him next season. As everybody pretty much agrees here, The Yanks made a MAJOR error in judgement by penciling in those 2 guys for the rotation with no parachute.

  70. Yankee Trader

    Trisha-

Thanks. I know you want Abreu back, and except for walks, and base stealing efficiency, he overall was better than in 2007, but he also came into camp in better shape in a contract year. I think his best position going forward is DH, and right now we have a DH in Matsui and possibly Damon plus Posada on occassion.

On the fence about Abreu who will want a 3 year contract when players such as Bay, Holliday, Crawford, Ankiel, possibly Ordonez and Dye are coming up in 2010.

  71. Al from BK( Brett Favre 12 TD's 4 INT in 4 games. CC Sabathia: 17-10, 2.70 ERA, 251 K's-253 IP, 10 CG's 5 Shut-Outs.)

Gee, this is what missing the playoffs does to some people.

  72. Ed - looking forward to 2009

    Yankee Trader –

earlier, AL from BK and I were discussing that Cashman should talk to Mark Sharpio about trading for Ryan Garko. Kelly Shoppach had emerged as an everyday catch, and V-Mart might shift to 1B. Although Garko doesn’t put up numbers like Giambi does but he has a decent batting average and a soild defender. Giambi makes him look like a gold glover. Agree?

  73. Bronx Jeers

if they can just convince Ian to change his name to something like Iandro Kenedaria maybe we can dump on Omar?

    Betsy,

Mostly Mets stuff but Olney thinks CC will go to the Angels. Though he does think we are going to have the best offer. Also thinks we will be in on Derek Lowe for 18 million per year for a 3 year deal. Didn’t mention us with Burnett, said he would be next in the pecking order after CC. Said we may poke around Manny Ramirez if he takes a short term deal for a lot of money rather than a 4 year deal. He stressed that we will be aggressive this off-season perusing free agents to try and rectify this season.

  82. Yankee Trader

Nobody complained about Jeter’s base running last year when he was being picked off base and going 15-8 in steals, or this year when he was 11-5. why complain about Abreu’s who was no worse?

Have you or anyone paid attention to Ordonez playing right field this year? He’s worse than you say Abreu is and so is Guerrero. Milton is no longer an outfielder…he’s a DH. between the hamstring and groin pulls, bulky knee and bulkier attitude, he’s not worth the trouble.

  85. brillohead

Cashman is back. Well thats good and bad. Just recently he passed on Tori Hunter, Santana, and over rated all his prospects. He had one of the worst benches the team has ever had, and as far as minor league postion players he came up totally empty. Only Gardner has some promise if he can learn to hit. His pitchers in the minors are all thesame types, average fastballs, with location issues that need to be perfect with location to succeed.
He fails to realize that if a guy hits 330 in the NL that he probably will not hit anywhere near 330 in the AL east. He also hired the wrong manager for this year as well. His money management has been weak, with the most $$$ to spend he bought very little value.
On the positive side, not sure it makes sense to make any major moves with the ownership going through changes as well. Hopefully Cash will realize his mistakes, or get help when he evaluates pitchers, and perhaps he understands that other than the NL superstars, that anyone he takes fro the NL is not going to replicate those stats in the AL East.

  86. AJ YANKS

He didn’t even talk with Hank—- Newsday said Hal was the one who negotiated the deal.

Brian will have full autonomy but understands Hank/Hal can overrule him at anytime like they did for A-Rod, Posada, and MO.

  87. Tom

“Gee, this is what missing the playoffs does to some people”

You said a mouthfull there sir.

Cashman’s not perfect, and he has made mistakes; however, this team did win 89 games–good enough for the 4th best record in the al.

This team is not that far off—if and only if Cashman’s plan is successful. Time will tell.

By the way this is the first time in 26 years the Brewers have been in the Post-Season. 26. I was Two when they last made the show. Cashman has overseen and ran the day to day goings on of a team that has been to the playoffs 10 years in a row–making the world series 5 times winning 3. I think its safe to say Cashman earned this contract

  88. Yankee Trader

    Ed and Al-
    Let’s try that again.

Don’t think Garko will be available, as Martinez was hurt most of the year and had no power.

Look at Garrett Atkins, converted 1st baseman playing 3rd for Rockies. Ian Stewart to take over 3rd and Helton at 1st.
    Might he be available?

  89. TeKNeticK

Hal = James Dolan. Doesn’t care about winning and only wants to sell seats. Has blind faith in a GM with a flawed plan, eerie similar to Dolan’s trust in Isiah.

This off-season will dictate the long term future of this franchise. Time to see if Hal is as committed as George and if the Yankees still stand for winning at all costs.

  90. EY

Can we say, “Stay the course”? :D

I am thrilled that Cash is coming back.

  91. george

Olney also said that the 2 L.A. teams were unlikely to chase Sabathia in terms of financially competing w/the Yanks. he did speculate about perhaps S.F. But he didn’t seem to have any real basis for his opinion.

let’s see if Sabathia cares about his geographical location if there is a $50 million difference in offers.

  92. Tom

It isn’t as if Garko is a Cleveland core guy and he has become expendable if they choose to move Victor Martinez to 1B. I would say they might bite on a few mid level pitchers maybe even IPK.

  94. Ariel

Sorry guys, but most of the pundits think the Yankees will “sniff/poke” around Manny. He is ours if we him. But what do they know!!!

    “Ed and Al-
    Let’s try that again.

Don’t think Garko will be available, as Martinez was hurt most of the year and had no power.

Look at Garrett Atkins, converted 1st baseman playing 3rd for Rockies. Ian Stewart to take over 3rd and Helton at 1st.
    Might he be available?”

I would bite on Atkins, however not for an extensive package.

  99. trisha - BRING BOBBY BACK!

The bottom line I am counting on is that they won’t want Manny. In fact I am so convinced of it that I will add that as number 5 to my prediction list.

    5. Yankees won’t go anywhere near Manny.

  100. GreenBeret7

No way San Francisco is going to sink nearly 300 million dollars in two pitchers, when they aren’t drawing and have no offense past Winn and Molina.

  101. R-Tek

Cashman is what he is…a mediocre GM.

Some good, some bad. Overvalues kids, doesn’t have a great eye for talent, picks up scraps and tries to turn water into wine. Good reputation in the league, limited creativity, lacks fortitude to make bold moves. Smart guy, handles the NY media well. Has done nothing in 3 years, lets other teams outbid us for good players, too conservative. Players like him, solid at making trades.

Sums him up well. Hal, like Cashman, lack creativity and didn’t have the guts to explore the market for another GM and didn’t know where to look. So, he took the safe choice.

  102. Ed - looking forward to 2009

“Manny would be an awful fit for NY.”

Not so fast Becca. Short of Manny just giving up and not coming out to play what could go wrong. I am sure Manny would like to come home to NY and be the hero down here instead of the villain. Also don’t forget his “friend” A-Rod is here and Manny would more than make up for A-Rods no show nights in the clutch A-Rod Manny back to back would have other managers scratching their heads. Do I think it will happen not likely but it isn’t a terrible idea.

  107. brillohead

    For Tom.

Comparing the Brewers to the Yankees is lauhable. The Brewers GM would DIE for 1/12 of the Yankees payroll. The Brewers GM would love to have a draw for FA`s like NYC, the history, and tradition. Please, Cashman under achieved with the $$$ he has to play with every year. I also bet the Brewers GM would DIE for owners like the Steinbrenners who allow the GM the ability to pick up key parts whenever they are needed. Saying he “earned” it is over board.

  108. Yankee Trader

No, you are right-they focused on his limited range and GIDP’s.
The reality however is Jeter is not a FA, but the face of the franchise, who along with Rivera and Posada, better be on the phone this fall making calls to Sabathia to come to the Yankees!!

All I said is I’m on the fence about Abreu, especially if it’s a 3 year guaranteed contract.

Two best teams in baseball will meet in the ALCS. Angels and Rays. Rays pitching is going to be REAL tough in the postseason. If Edwin Jackson hits the strike zone, he and Garza will be the best pitchers on that staff. It takes more than payroll to build winners. The three most expensive teams in baseball–yanks, mets, det did not make the playoffs. Milwalkee did not begin to win until they made a commitment to scouting and developing players.

As far as I’m concerned he did earn it. 11 years as GM 10 years in the playoffs, 5 world series, 3 world series wins. Yup fire his butt.

None of that really concerns me Trish results do. He has obviously wanted out of Boston for years and those were simply acts of defiance IMO. Yes he is a goof ball but his talent and production is undeniable. The Sheffield comparison is also a bit harsh, Manny is not a malicous guy with a vendetta Sheffield is. Trish,

Manny is correct, it may kill you to believe it but it’s a GAME! Everybody plays to win but every year many teams don’t make it to the post-season, should those guys go hang themselves? It’s a game, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

  152. trisha - BRING BOBBY BACK!

I would never compare Manny with Sheff in terms of that surly nastiness that Sheff possesses!

Manny assured himself that he would never see the Bronx when he whacked out Pukeface and knocked down the 70-year-old traveling secretary.

While you may think that results are the only things that matter, you have to know that the Yankees pay attention to a lot more, including how well the person would fit. I agree with Rebecca. There is no fit there.

    My opinion.

I’ve read that Magglio Ordonez might be traded because the Tigers are looking to get their salary under $100mil. He’s supposed to make like $18mil next year, but if the Yankees can’t get Teixeira at a price they like, getting Ordonez to replace Abreu would help the offense, don’t you think?

  155. Brandon (THE METS BULLPEN IS GANSTA !)..."Keep Manny away !"

Minny deserved to the win tonight, I wanted them to get to the ALCS it would have broken this CRAPPY movement to land XBOX sluggers that care about nothing but thier stats. 156. trisha - BRING BOBBY BACK!

Scoprio, we’re not talking here about whether or not Manny is right or wrong, just about whether he would fit in the Bronx.

That statement, as you well know, would never play in the Bronx. Neither would just about anything that Manny pulls.

  157. Quilvio Imposter

  160. no.27

Trading for Magglio wouldn’t take much because of how much he makes. The Yankees would still get the draft picks from letting Abreu go and probably get draft picks from Magglio the following year after declining his option.

Fair enough. However with the likely departure of Giambi, who exactly will protect A-Rod in the line-up? Lets face it not even Giambi did a good job the Yanks need a “dangerous” hitter behind A-Rod in the line-up and please don’t tell me that hitter is Matsui or Nady.

  162. Brandon (THE METS BULLPEN IS GANSTA !)..."Keep Manny away !"

  171. no.27

The thing about getting Ordonez is that its a 1 year deal and you actually get draft picks the following year when he leaves. Signing Manny will be a 3 year deal at big money for a guy that shouldn’t be on this team. Plus, the Yankees need to give up picks to get him.

You seem to be living in the past if you think Matsui or Posada are still “dangerous” hitters. If an opposing manager has to choose between pitching to A-Rod or a 36 year old catcher coming off of shoulder surgery A-Rod would never see a pitch.

  181. Bronx Jeers

Manny or no Manny! No Manny!!

Dodgers made the playoffs with Manny. My guess is they resign Manny, since other money is coming off the books, and don’t go after CC.

Agree with GB7-Giants can’t afford to get CC at the expense of poor hitting.

Angels will need to decide if they are spending on Teixiera, Rodriguez, and already have starting pitching.

He will not be signed by Oakland and would be foolish to sign with Seattle.

Since there are so few quality free agents this year, and the economy is on the brink, plus insurance companies won’t insure these big contracts, I suspect a lot of free agents will be offerred a minor league contract. Wonder if Lehman’s had a skybox in the new stadium, that they now cannot pay for?

  183. Dave D

The organization doesn’t care about Kennedy. They took Rasner out of the rotation, brought up Kennedy, then re-inserted Rasner in the rotation after Kennedy’s start. They didn’t even give him a couple of starts, they had seen enough. Girardi and Cashman never mention him when they talk about the kids, they didn’t even bring him up after the playoffs were over to enjoy the final days of the stadium as a reward.

He is trade bait, they don’t give a damn about him anymore

Brandon, wasn’t there also talk of Minaya wanting CC?

  196. mel

    Al,

Unless A-rod adjusts what he’s doing at the plate, he’ll see pitches all day, everyday.

Just the other week, they went at A-rod. He got out and they intentionally walked whomever was behind him.

The Yankees lost their bite. The pitchers aren’t intimidated and are pitching with great confidence to all the Yankees. Well, they were a little careful pitching to Gardner & Nady towards the end. What a hoot.

But I digress. Pitchers figured out that they didn’t have to work too hard to get us out. Even if guys got on base, there was a good chance we weren’t going to push them across home plate.

But, if we can get rid of the hit or miss guys. Get Posada back, even if it’s just at the plate. Get Matsui’s consistent production back. Get a revamped Robi. And a healthy Jeter. A clear-headed Alex. A new beginning at a new stadium, I think they’ll be good to go.

  197. no.27

Matsui hit .209 after the all-star break with an ops under .600. He will be a productive hitter next year, but the Yankees need someone that will make pitchers pitch to A-Rod and can be counted on to play a full season.

    Mel-

Who’s the first FA signed by the Yankees?

I’m going to go with Marte, they’ll decline the 6M option and sign him for two years guaranteed.

My second guess would be Burnett.

My hope is that it isn’t Pettitte, because he’s going nowhere, and I’d like to see us sign 2 FA starters that can give you a solid 7 innings most times out, and Pettitte clearly isn’t a 200 innings pitcher anymore. Pettitte back as last resort.

Now if Mussina doesn’t retire, he’ll be the first FA signing.

Oh geez, I was supposed to get only one guess. Right?

  201. Al from BK( Brett Favre 12 TD's 4 INT in 4 games. CC Sabathia: 17-10, 2.70 ERA, 251 K's-253 IP, 10 CG's 5 Shut-Outs.)

““You seem to be living in the past if you think Matsui or Posada are still “dangerous” hitters.”

Seriously. I guess you didn’t see Matsui get on base much after he came back from his injury, huh?

Yes I believe that Matsui and Jorge are both dangerous hitters so I guess I will just keep on “living in the past.””

Matsui is having another knee surgery very soon and will basically be immobile. I would have to believe that eventually this many operations on the Knees of a guy in his 30’s would take a toll on his overall production. Don’t get me wrong they are both great hitters but “dangerous” is a word reserved for Pujols, Ortiz, and Manny.

    Everyone wanted Vazquez
    Everyone wanted Weaver.

If the Dodgers don’t pursue CC, to say the Yankees are the only suitors is a pretty bad assumption to make. The man is one of, if not, the most dominant lefty in the game, c’mon. Sorry but I have to disagree. Dodgers perhaps but they might not want to spend 150 million on CC. The Red Sox don’t need him but I’m sure they’ll be involved just to drive up the price. The Tigers maybe. The Mets are going to be focused heavily on K-Rod and secondly if CC were to come to NY at all it would be to the Yanks and not the Mets. The Giants might get in on it but why would he want to pitch for a team with no offense and a suspect bullpen?

    Cash-

Not saying the Yankees won’t offer him the most money. I think they will hand the money as much money as he wants. But the Angels are going to be smart with their money this year. They will pick up Vlad’s option, do what they can to resign Tex, Anderson is going to walk, K-Rod is going to walk (they have a ton of faith in Arrendando to close, the kid has filthy stuff and proved that this year). They will still be suitors in the CC sweepstakes, especially since Escobar is still a ? after his surgery and Garland is going to be gone. The Mets may have shelled out a lot of money to CC, but it doesn’t mean they aren’t willing to offer CC some as well. They really don’t have a lot of cash coming off of the books, but with a new field and clearly a big market, they can still afford it and O will do all in his power to once AGAIN (haha), make up for this year’s collapse. Red Sox will clearly drive up the price, I don’t see them being real suitors, but you really never know. You still have to go with the idea that big markets will be in the running. Regardless of the Tigers wanted to limit payroll, they have very very little depth in their starting rotation and they know that. They just finished last in the AL Central, I am sure they will be willing to pay CC some serious cash as well.

The best thing the Yankees can do to sign CC is put on the full court press, bring him and his family to NYC, wine and dine him and have Jeter, Posada and Rivera show him around the new stadium, and tell him if he makes the all star team next year he will be allowed to enter the home run hitting contest!!!

    YT,

To be fair, Manny’s not dumb. I think he has some kind of disability. There was a long article about him in the New Yorker I think. It’s not something he does consciously.

Anyway, it’s not going to happen. But I think it’s silly to say no to that kind of bat. I think he’d be a better fit than Shef ever was. I also think he could fit right into the Big G’s shoes as the team character.

But it’s not going to happen.

I think that the Dodgers are going to be forced to bring him back. He’s a good fit and he’s rejuvenated Dodger baseball in LA. And really, they basically paid him a zero-based salary this season.

  233. CaShbum ( I am all For Manny)

Manny is a average fielder that is not his strong point and not the reason you got him here. You tell him If he want to cut his hair he can become a yankee if not then you dont sign him period. Manny didnt do that all last year, he started doing it this year because he was unhappy about his contract when he gets his contract he will not complain.

Get Girardi some role players who will obey him and do the little things to win games like bunt, steal, play good D, manufacture runs.

The more vets on this team, the more difficult you are making Girardi’s job. They will alienate him
You committed to Girardi, now give him players he needs. Girardi doesn’t know how to play Bully baseball.

  240. Matt from LI

Only way I see Manny in pinstripes is if one of two scenarios happen…

    1) Matsui learns how to play 1B, which he said he is willing to do. I personally don’t like the idea. We haven’t had a real 1B since Tino. Sicne then we’ve had players who we’ve just kinda thrown in there and asked them to learn the position. But, if Matsui does end up trying to learn the position then Manny could be our DH and we don’t have to worry about looking for a 1B.

    2) We trade Matsui. The man has very little value right now, so I don’t see this happening.

I don’t see either scenario happnening to be honest. I see Manny chillin’ back in Dodger Blue in 09′.

  241. mel

    Rebecca,

No you didn’t. But if I see a bat in the episode…!

I don’t see the Yankees giving a blank check to CC. A just above-market price to come play for the Yankees should be enough of a pitch.

Don’t forget, the Yankees have to replace Giambi’s bat and glove (guffaw).

That’s why I suggested that the Yankees *might* prefer an AJ/Tex combo over CC.

AJ’s older, but I think he’s entering his prime right now. He’ll command a shorter contract in the 4 yr/$60M range. CC’s looking to cash in at a 7 yr/$140M type of deal.

I don’t even want to think what it’ll take to get Tex, but 1B is a priority as far as I’m concerned.

  242. Yankee Trader

    CaShbum-
I think you forgot that Manny was out with an “injury” during the month of September in 2007. No doubt the man can hit-when he’s motivated!

    Nitro, thanks!

I’m surprised that Buster really thinks the Angels are going to put the full court press on CC – I just hope that if the Yanks make a good offer and he turns them down, that fans won’t savage Cashman. There is nothing he can do if CC just does not want to play in NY.

Not sure how I feel about Derek Lowe – can he hack it again in the AL East? I guess if they get Burnett (but he may re-sign with the Jays), Lowe might be a nice fit. However, why would he want to leave such a good situation in LA?

He is complaining about having a $20 million a year option. What guarantee is there that he doesn’t do the same thing after the new contract is a few months old? None. Its Manny being Manny.

  268. george

Manny Ramirez as a Yankee – the thought is sickening.

if i’m spending that kind of money get the Yanks a hitter who will be late 30s at the end of his contract, Teixeira seems a better choice, because he also brings a glove. and on the Angels he seems to have adapted to hit-running, etc. all Manny brings in addition to hitting is truly offensive behavior.

  269. Al from BK( Brett Favre 12 TD's 4 INT in 4 games. CC Sabathia: 17-10, 2.70 ERA, 251 K's-253 IP, 10 CG's 5 Shut-Outs.)

    POLL right now!:

Who will be the Yankees big offensive acquisition this offseason?

Who will be the Yankees big pitching acquisition this offseason?

  270. mel

    Al: offense-Tex
    pitching-AJ

  271. Nick in SF

Al: same answer for both questions: CC!

  272. Al from BK( Brett Favre 12 TD's 4 INT in 4 games. CC Sabathia: 17-10, 2.70 ERA, 251 K's-253 IP, 10 CG's 5 Shut-Outs.)

    “Al,

You know, I must have the biggest heart in the world. I love all my Yankees.

Better-Meat got his eyes fixed and was playing better in his ROLE. Of course he got exposed when he was pushed into full-time duty.

I like Ransom though. Miguel Cairo with a bat. Whee!”

I lol’d at that last part.

  273. mel

    Nick,

Is Cal a good school? Daughter got something in the mail from their athletic department. Wondering if I should fish it out of the rubbish and give it to her.

  274. Al from BK( Brett Favre 12 TD's 4 INT in 4 games. CC Sabathia: 17-10, 2.70 ERA, 251 K's-253 IP, 10 CG's 5 Shut-Outs.)

    To answer my own poll:

    Offense: Kotchman

  275. no.27

    Offense: Teixeira
    Pitching: Sabathia

  276. Ramon

    Pitching – Oliver Perez
    Hitting – Delgado

  277. Nick in SF

Is Cal a good school? Is the Pope Catholic? Is Livan hungry? Is Hal Holbrook a cherished national institution?

    Yes, yes, yes, and yes.

  278. Al from BK( Brett Favre 12 TD's 4 INT in 4 games. CC Sabathia: 17-10, 2.70 ERA, 251 K's-253 IP, 10 CG's 5 Shut-Outs.)

Ramon- when did the Yankees become the destination for Mets cast-offs?

  279. Tank

    Pitching – Manny
    Hitting – CC

  280. Al from BK( Brett Favre 12 TD's 4 INT in 4 games. CC Sabathia: 17-10, 2.70 ERA, 251 K's-253 IP, 10 CG's 5 Shut-Outs.)

“Is Cal a good school? Is the Pope Catholic? Is Livan hungry? Is Hal Holbrook a cherished national institution?

    Yes, yes, yes, and yes.”

    LMAO.

  281. David from McDonalds

I still think Kennedy could be a star if he gets the chance.

  282. mel

Um. K. Thanks. Maybe I should ask someone impartial. :?

  283. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

    Tank: LMAO

    Pitching: CC
    Hitting: Someone we’re not expecting.

  284. vin

    Offense – Adrian Gonzalez

mel, was it a serious question? Cal is the top-ranked public university in the country.

    Buddy,

As long as they’re hugging trees and not my daughter, that’s just fine.

  289. Joe from Subway

    see what you started, al?

    :)

  290. Nick in SF

Buddy: true, but each incoming freshman class member was issued his or her own chainsaw this semester.

  291. David from McDonalds

If we sign Manny, chances are the Dodgers would then go for CC. Though I still think the Tex/AJ combo is the better ticket.

  292. Brandon (THE METS BULLPEN IS GANSTA !)..."Keep Manny away !"

    Offense – Adrian Gonzalez
    Pitching – CC

And what may I ask would we deal for Gonzo ?

  293. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

Nick in SF September 30th, 2008 at 11:27 pm

Is Cal a good school? Is the Pope Catholic? Is Livan hungry? Is Hal Holbrook a cherished national institution?

    Yes, yes, yes, and yes.

    you still lost to Maryland.

  294. Nick in SF

mel: Berkeley does have that crunchy granola reputation, but there is also a large “normal” counter-culture and a large fraternity-sorority system. No joke, it’s a great school.

  295. R-Tek

Kennedy, Coke, and Miranda for Gonzalez

  296. Buddy Biancalana

    Brandon-

Igawa & $50 Million for Gonzo

  297. Nick in SF

Rebecca: she asked if it was a good school, not a good football team!

    Sigh.

Oh yeah, we’re still 3-1! I think Michigan St. was a good win. Maryland is ranked now! We beat Colorada St. 42-7!

    The season isn’t over yet.

  298. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

Mel: I think most contracts are up 31 October.

  299. Wilson

Marbury will thrive in D’antoni’s system. We need to hang onto him.

  300. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

Nick: Yeah, but you’re asking on a sports blog!

Of course, if we’re going by football teams, than Syracuse is bottom of the barrel, so maybe I should shut up :-D

  301. jonnycat

anyone remember Bobcat, and all his ‘insider’ knowledge about how we were going to land Santana?

    What happened to that guy?

  302. vin

“And what may I ask would we deal for Gonzo ?”

I can dream, can’t I? The Pads would never move him – he’s from the area, signed an extension (I believe), loves it there (for what that’s worth).

But… I’d start with Cano and Kennedy and see where it goes.

  303. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

jonnycat: I think he was just playing us

Pete asked him for his credentials and he bailed.

  304. Nick in SF

jonnycat: you read what I want you to read. Everything I say, I say for a reason. It’s all calculated. You have no idea what’s really going on.

  305. vin

“jonnycat: I think he was just playing us

Pete asked him for his credentials and he bailed.”

Yeah, but it was really exciting theater for awhile there. I’ll never forget “You hear what they want you to hear.” It was probably some 13 year old who gets a kick out of having thousands of people waiting on every word he types.

  306. jonnycat

Rebecca: I sorta remember that he provided pete with some credentials back channel, and pete allowed him to stay? He seemed to be so on the money until the last second….

btw, good luck with school this semester. I applied for a job there last year and ultimately signed on somewhere else.

  307. PAT M

    Cal-Berkley is not a good school, rather it’s one of the Nation’s best…..Always been a great place ….Go Bears…

  308. Matt from LI

“Kennedy, Coke, and Miranda for Gonzalez”

yes, and while we are at it… Lets trade Hughes for Peavy, straight up.

  309. jonnycat

Nick- VERY funny. It’s coming back to me now, lol

  310. Nick in SF

I actually missed most of the Bobcat phenomenon. I think it started while I was out of the country during the Yanks/Cleveland series and by the time I came back he was on the way to becoming a running joke. But I did get to see a few of his posts. If he was just a pure BS’er, he was a good one.

  311. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

    jonnycat: Thank you!

Nick: OMG. That was spot on!

  312. Clare

I remember Bobcat, but I forget who it was that commented on ARod returning days before it was public. Anyone remember who that was?

  313. Buddy Biancalana

Bobcat must have has some insider knowledge, I think he may have been jeopardizing his job, which is why he may may hit the high road,

  314. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

Nick: It was during the Winter Meetings, when everyone was hanging on every minute waiting for Santana trade to brea.

The funny thing is nothing happened until the middle of January!

  315. vin

Clare – I believe that was Brandon who reported that one – if memory serves.

  316. 38HotDogs

The ARod source was named Miller or something like that as i recall

  317. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

I think the A-Rod source was Miller.

    Brandon was the Manny source.

  318. Buddy Biancalana

    It was Miller

  319. Nick in SF

I was the source that reported that Arod was going to opt out of his Scores contract.

  320. vin

    Miller… that’s right.

  321. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

If we tried hard enough we could look up the thread in the archive but it’s late and I’m lazy.

  322. Jorge Tabata

    Hughes = Big game pitcher

  323. Al from BK( Brett Favre 12 TD's 4 INT in 4 games. CC Sabathia: 17-10, 2.70 ERA, 251 K's-253 IP, 10 CG's 5 Shut-Outs.)

I am the source for the CC talks come the offseason everybody refer to me for all things CC. For other inside info read SJ’s post.

  324. pat

It was Miller with the A-Rod scoop last year. He had a friend who worked in an agents office.

Either Miller or Bobcat also had some sort of a connection to people at Goldman Sachs. I think that was Bobcat but don’t remember for sure anymore.

  325. Nick in SF

I am going to Vallejo tomorrow. I will keep my eyes and ears open for all CC-related info. If there’s a local skinny to be found on CC, I will find it.

  326. Tank

I do remember one line that Bobcat stays that still sticks with me when I read the anonymous quotes about Sabathia

“Remember, you read what you are supposed to read. these things are leaked purposefully.”

  327. Clare

    Miller – right, thanks.

  328. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

    Maybe Bobcat was Warren Buffet.

    How funny would that be?

BTW, I’m an inside source for…umm…uhh…

I’ll get back to you on that.

  329. mel from Taco Bell

Point for each time you use “skinny” and CC in a sentence.

    Score:

    Nick (1)

  330. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

Nick: You know we’ll hold you to it. I’m still waiting for my pops :-P

  331. Nick in SF

Rebecca, it would be to my eternal dishonor to welsh on our bet, even though the terms for your side of the bet were never spelled out, and even though I don’t want to offend any Welshmen who might be checking in with the blog.

Also, CC will look good in pinstripes; vertical stripes are slimming, so they’ll make him look skinny.

  332. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

    Nick: Dude.

    from my trip to Wales

  333. Dave D

If Girardi doesn’t work out, why doesn’t Hank name himself manager?

  334. Nick in SF

Monet meets Japan, nice. That reminds me of a snowy day I spent in Glasgow once. Wales is the only UK nation I haven’t visited, so I have no further comment.

  335. mel from Taco Bell

Who’s the most famous woman and man from Wales?

  336. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

Nick: You’ve got to go. I am in love with the UK…all of Europe, but the UK especially Wales and Scotland.

  337. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

mel: Woman I don’t know, but man is probably Dylan Thomas.

  338. mel from Taco Bell

    Rebecca,

I’m thinking Sir Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta Jones. I may be wrong, though.

  339. Nick in SF

I love the UK too, even Northern Ireland. Or maybe especially Northern Ireland. Hey, is Rosh Hoshanna over or does it go until sundown tomorrow night? I was supposed to call my grandma but I forgot.

  340. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

    Nick: Tomorrow till Sundown.

Don’t worry, I didn’t call either of my parents or speak to any of my brothers today.

  341. BoSox Bob

When does Joe Torre come back to “manage” the Yanks??

  342. Nick in SF

Thanks, I’ll call tomorrow, and if my step-mom chews me out, I’ll tell her that Rebecca from the LoHud blog didn’t call anyone on the first day either!

absolutely horrible move by the yanks.
under this supposed “free thinker,” the team has returned to its spend money like a drunken sailor ways.
as has been pointed out previously, if you look at basically all our free agent signings, they’re borderline retarded.
name one player cash has brought in that lived up to – or exceeded expectations? afraud? giambi? damon? anyone? i don’t think so.
and when we had a chance to acquire a frontline starter this year – johan santana – for nothing more than a broken down picther in his early 20s and a fifth outfielder, he’s afraid to pull the trigger because of obvious past mistakes.
hate to say it, but the yanks ain’t making the playoffs next year either, no matter who they bring in and how much money they spend.
let’s see the yanks get back to the model that made them successful in the past and grow talent from within the organization and then supplement that with role players from outside, not aging, could care less all stars at every position like bobby “i’m afraid of the fence” abreu and ivan fraudriguez.
but instead, cash will spend more money, bring in some lame centerfielder instead of giving a sparkplug leadoff man like gardner a shot and sign phonies like sheets and burnett to big money contracts, repeating the sins of the past.
    way to doom the franchise.

  347. Future

Knucklehead sounds exactly like one. Cash has done everything the Steinbrenners wanted him too. How can you argue Bobby Abreu was a bad trade? We needed a catcher so we got Pudge. Also remember he brought us some of the players on the winning teams. Sorry we just can’t win every year. He couldnt know the guys he picked up would not hit well with RISP. FYI, he didnt want to resign A-Rod. He does when he is told we need and it wont always work out, but find me someone better. Do NOT say Epstein. He is not better.
