Just a reminder, we’re going to have a live video chat today at 4 p.m. ET.

Go to this link and ask your questions. I’ll get to as many as I can. Why do I have a bad feeling the Brian Cashman news will come down while I’m on?

Thanks.

  1. Sea Net

    Reyes for Crawford? That’s interesting…

  2. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

Don’t see Tampa trading Crawford. Not after winning the AL East.

  3. Al from BK( Brett Favre 12 TD's 4 INT in 4 games. CC Sabathia: 17-10, 2.70 ERA, 251 K's-253 IP, 10 CG's 5 Shut-Outs.)

Can the Knicks just cut Marbury already? This is getting painful.

  4. Tom

both the Yankees and Mets had the same problem: Pitching. Blaming the players for not being clutch and demanding wholesale changes makes for good radio, but, its not the crux of the issue. If the yankees sign or trade for 1-2 quality starters they make the playoffs. If the Mets fix their pitching they too make the playoffs.

  5. Tom

Imagine if the Mets made a run for cc. They could, with Pedro’s money comming off the books….

  6. Phil - 27 in '08

My only fear is that the Yankees cave in to sentimentality and resign Pettitte, Moose, Giambi, and Abreu…and come back with almost the exact same team as this year with the hope that the injured players perform up to their capabilities.

  7. Clint

Cut curry while you’re at it.

What a disgrace he is. Randolph may be a cancer but he is 10x more committed and a better player than Curry.

  8. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

Phil, I don’t see that happening, at all.

  9. Y26

Mets problem is the pen… they need K-Rod.

Do they have the money for K-Rod AND CC?

  10. TKinDC

“Imagine if the Mets made a run for cc. They could, with Pedro’s money comming off the books….”

That would mean just shy of $300M committed to to left arms – does that sound very good to you?

  11. TKinDC

    two, not to. :(

  12. CB

Lots of new threads today. On the chances Goldman Sachs, the yankees partner in the YES network goes under:

“Which smart people? I’m genuinely curious.”

Nouriel Roubini an economist from NYU for one. He’s probably the first person to sound the alarm for the credit bubble. When he spoke up most people dismissed him as an alarmist. Oh well.

If you want to get a worst case scenario of the financial market Roubini is a very good source. He may be something of a pessimist but unlike most analysts who tend to be “optimistic” he was willing to say things at a time when people didn’t want to hear them.

He has a very good website:

    http://www.rgemonitor.com/blog/roubini/

  13. t-rock

Phil, a lot will depend on who the GM is.

If it is Cashman, you may be right.

  14. Al from BK( Brett Favre 12 TD's 4 INT in 4 games. CC Sabathia: 17-10, 2.70 ERA, 251 K's-253 IP, 10 CG's 5 Shut-Outs.)

“Cut curry while you’re at it.

What a disgrace he is. Randolph may be a cancer but he is 10x more committed and a better player than Curry.”

I don’t think they can hes got a few years left on his contract. I agree about Randolph however he is too slow for the D’Antoni offense.

  15. kd

i don’t see why the mets wouldn’t go after cc, if only to drive up the price for the yankees. especially if they don’t pick up delgado’s option.

anyone know if cc likes to hit, like hampton who didn’t want to go to an al team because he liked hitting?

  16. Phil - 27 in '08

Rebecca – I hope not. As much as I like the Big G…he can’t be re-signed.

  17. COL 88

Mets fans want Varitek? lol Wow, the depths they are sinking too, I even heard a call where they said they wanted Pudge.

Beningo was the 1st one who said he wanted Varitek.

  18. Christina

Cliff Lee- Comeback player of the year.. no Moose?

  19. Mark (Brett is back)

Curry must be in great shape, at least D’antoni seems funny:

He sat out the morning session because he’s battling with a virus that revealed itself with a fever on Monday night. D’Antoni admitted he was disappointed that Curry already missed a day, but then he added, “You know what, I heard he was throwing up and everything, so, it’s a great way to lose weight.”

  20. Ed - looking forward to 2009

    AL,

Curry had been playing too soft. He needs to man up already.

  21. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

CB: Thank you for the link, I’ve bookmarked it. My brother’s going for an MBA at NYU, so he’s probably heard of the guy you cite.

I think you can be optimistic about baseball, but not the economy–you always need to be prepared for worst case scenario.

    Phil: I agree.

  22. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

Christina: Minors to 22-3 beats out-of-the-rotation to 20-9, apparently.

  23. E-Rod

If CC doesn’t want to go to the Yankees, why would he go to the 2nd rate Mets coming off 2 collapses and no winning pedigree?

If it’s money that talks, we WILL outbid anyone. That is certain. The question is if he wants to come East.

  24. Brandon (THE METS BULLPEN IS GANSTA !)..."Keep Manny away !"

    Knicks center King Bowser

  25. Al from BK( Brett Favre 12 TD's 4 INT in 4 games. CC Sabathia: 17-10, 2.70 ERA, 251 K's-253 IP, 10 CG's 5 Shut-Outs.)

    “AL,

Curry had been playing too soft. He needs to man up already.”

Yeah Curry stinks. The starting line up should honestly be:

    PG- Chris Duhon
    SG- Jamal Crawford
    SF- Quentin Richardson
    PF- Wilson Chandler
    C- David Lee

  26. Wave Your Hat

I posted this on the previous thread but the discussion was interesting and I wanted to keep it going:

“IMO if you are going to pay a guy [Texeira] $20M per than he not only has to be an elite player at his position but an elite player in the game as a whole. At that kind of money he should meet both criteria. IMO Tex doesn’t meet either.”

    Why?

$20M per is just a number. It may be too much or too little, but you have to evaluate it based on what your needs are.

Right now, the Yanks are down Giambi and probably Abreu. Despite the insanely negative feelings about Giambi on this board, which the man does not deserve IMO, that is a huge, huge hit to the Yankee offense next year. On the good side, that alone frees up $37M per year.

The Yanks need to compete next year in the new stadium in order to continue to draw full houses and make money. IMO, to do that, they need, among other things, to find offense to replace Giambi and Abreu.

The Yanks need to sign either a power hitting right fielder or a power hitting first baseman. To my mind, only Tex really fits the bill.

Whether only the top two 1B in baseball are elite, or the top three are, or the top four, is really irrelevant to the discussion. I think he’s elite – maybe Pujols and Berkman are “super-elite”, I don’t know, it doesn’t much matter.

I’m pretty sure no one on this board has any real insight into what becomes of Goldman. My guess is, if they do sign Tex, the Yanks won’t need a cash call on the partners to pay Tex’s salary, so Goldman’s financial profile is pretty irrelevant and by itself is pretty meaningless in determining the Yanks’ salary structure next year.

All bets are off if the crash and the Second Great Depression roll around, but until that does occur my guess is player salaries are going to stay high. Tex is just the lucky beneficiary of the cash in baseball and a weak free agent pool this year.

  27. Christina

I guess Im biased with moose.

Side Note: I cant stand lisa from whitestone. If she posts here oh well.

  28. Brandon (THE METS BULLPEN IS GANSTA !)..."Keep Manny away !"

    Starbury is hard at work

  29. E-Rod

    Jerome James > Curry

  30. John in Ohio

I think CC really likes to hit.

  31. Brandon (THE METS BULLPEN IS GANSTA !)..."Keep Manny away !"

The only reason to watch MSG this NBA season

  32. NITRO

    Al,

Agree. I’d rather win 20 games with the young guys and atleast try and build something and get a chance at a good draft pick, rather than win 25 games with these losers like Marbury, Curry, Randolph etc. and get a worse draft pick while the young guys hardly get any time on the court.

  33. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

Actually, you might be surprised to find out how well connected some of us are.

But that aside, SJ and CB have both done excellent jobs explaining how if something does happen, that it will affect the Yankees.

Here’s hoping we do avoid the Great Depression Take Two.

  34. vtred

Is there any bigger embarrassment in sports other than Marbury? I mean besides Omar Minaya, I’m talking about players.

  35. TKinDC

“I think CC really likes to hit.”

He’ll be able to afford a solid gold batting cage when we’re done with the negotiations!

  36. Wave Your Hat

    Rebecca-

I doubt if anyone knows what is going to happen with Goldman, so that includes by definition all of the people who follow Pete’s blog. Certainly did not mean to insult you.

  37. Clint

Not a good sign at all that Cashman is taking so long– he is clearly taking a further look at Seattle. Maybe he even traveled out there after the game on Saturday.

Give him until tomorrow at noon to make a decision. We’re not being insensitive, we simply need to know one way or the other so we can plan accordingly. Finding a new GM is not a trip to the fair, it will take time. Everyday counts.

  38. Brandon (THE METS BULLPEN IS GANSTA !)..."Keep Manny away !"

vtred have you seen Eddy Curry/Jared O-Freeze and JJ FAT

  39. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

Wave Your Hat: Ah, I misread your post. My apologies.

  40. X-Mann

If CC wants to hit, why not let him DH twice a week? Whats the problem?

  41. SJ44

Actually, the GS issue is a BIG issue for the Yankees.

They are limited partners in the team, as well as partners in the YES Network.

If they have to sell their shares of the network at a reduced rate, it reduces the overall valuation of the network.

In turn, it reduces the overall valuation of the team.

How is that relevent? Depending on how much they have borrowed, and how much is outstanding, they could be in a tough financial situation.

Sort of like having a house you bought for 300K, have a 250K mortgage on it, and its only worth 150K now.

    That ain’t good.

I said the other day, I believe the current financial crisis is going to affect baseball free agency this year. Its definitely going to affect the Yankees.

    How much? Time will tell.

  42. Al from BK( Brett Favre 12 TD's 4 INT in 4 games. CC Sabathia: 17-10, 2.70 ERA, 251 K's-253 IP, 10 CG's 5 Shut-Outs.)

“The only reason to watch MSG this NBA season”

Ewing Jr. and Wilson Chandler are pretty much the only 2 guys I care about watching. Hopefully Crawford improves in the D’Antoni system because as a player I like the guy.

  43. CB

“$20M per is just a number. It may be too much or too little, but you have to evaluate it based on what your needs are.”

$20M will likely represent around 11-13% of their payroll next year.

No business doesn’t think long and hard about allocating 11% of their payroll in a specific direction.

$20M is also roughly where there is a marked cliff in the distribution of player salries. Compared to the number of players who make $15-19M there are far, far fewer making $20-25M. It’s the difference between alfonso soriano and manny ramirez.

And there is no way that the yankees are not very, very concerned about the financial stability of their single biggest business partner. No chance.

We may be worried about CC Sabathia, but Hal is going to be very concerned about the immediate future of the Yes network.

The network is worth more than double what the team is.

  44. mark007

“are you gonna get in the truck or not?”

  45. Wilson

This is a scary series for the Phillies.

Gallardo is a stud, he is like Lincecum/Joba. Sabathia will win his starts so if Gallardo can win tomorrow against Hameles, then they can easily win this series. Suppan is also a big game pitcher. McClung throwing heat out of the pen too.

I want the Phillies to win, but this is not going to be easy by any stretch.

  46. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

SJ and CB: I realize that you guys can’t do more than make an educated guess, but if you do, what do you see happenning if Goldman Sachs gets bought out or bailed out or bankrupts out?

  47. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and hopefully the offense won't be as offensive.

The Mets monitor what is said on talk radio? That’s the second time I’ve heard that.

  48. Trevor

“Not a good sigh at all Cashman is taking so long”

I don’t think it’s a good sign either. The word on this blog during the weekend was by late Tuesday we would have an answer.
Well it’s late in the afternoon and it’s Tuesday and no answer.

  49. SJ44

Another issue re: the payroll is insurance.

Every contract is insured. However, a lot of companies are backing off insuring all of the larger deals because their limits are getting crunched in this financial mess.

Also, because the credit markets are drying up, insurance companies, as well as other companies, are going to have their lines of credit either eliminated all together or severely reduced.

Its a big issue. Nobody writes about it because its complex and its not something that’s easy to explain. Especially since, as private companies, baseball teams don’t have to reveal their books to anybody.

That said, if you don’t think the current financial issues affecting the country aren’t go to affect baseball, you are kidding yourself.

We just don’t know how much at the present time.

  50. TKinDC

    is Pete experiencing Technical Possibilities?

  51. Doreen

    Well SJ44 -

That (payroll insurance) pretty much makes re-signing Pavano a moot point! :)

(gotta find your laughs wherever you can find them these days.)

  52. Clint

Pick up Delgado’s option and package him with Heilman and trade him for Joakim Soria.. Ed Coleman suggested that yesterday. I’d make that trade if I were the Mets.

  53. Pauly

A few days ago many of you folks showed interest in reading Lupica’s article from yesterday’s daily news. Here is is.

    http://www.nydailynews.com/spo.....tml?page=1

As far as Cash goes…is the new stadium really going to collapse if he decides to bounce? I mean, the man HAS committed a LOT of money to some terrible pitchers.

  54. pat

Interesting observation from Tom Verducci in SI:

“A thought occurred to me after I put together my award ballots: where are all the old guys? I named a total of 25 players on my MVP and Cy Young ballots (one of them made both). Of those 25 players, 20 of them are 30-and-younger. Only two are older than 32 (Alex Rodriguez and Manny Ramirez). Yes, folks, feel free to draw your own conclusions in this testing era, but baseball is a young man’s game again.”

  55. Fredo Corleone

“Pick up Delgado’s option and package him with Heilman and trade him for Joakim Soria.. Ed Coleman suggested that yesterday. I’d make that trade if I were the Mets.”

I’m sure Dayton Moore would find such a proposal good for a couple chuckles.

  56. SJ44

    Rebecca,

Warren Buffet put in 5 billion into GS. They are also planning a stock offering to raise another 5 billion.

In return, they are leaving the investment banking business and will be solely a commercial bank.

IIRC, commercial banks are not allowed to own entities such as baseball teams, television networks etc. They may be forced to sell those assets at whatever they can sell them for in order to be given clearance to be a commercial lender.

If that’s the case, they may sell their interests for whatever they can get. If its below market value, that affects the valuation of both the Yankees and the YES Network.

Its not just belt tightening time for regular folks. Its the same for rich and formerly rich people.

I think every team in baseball right now is huddled with their financial people and figuring out what they can and can’t do right now.

In the short term, its going to be awfully tough for teams to put hundreds of millions of dollars on their books in the coming months. It would shock me if that happens.

  57. Redding

Indians have the option to swap Michael Bratley for Taylor Green as the 2nd player in the CC trade, now that the Brewers make the playoffs they receive that option.

  58. CB

    Rebecca,

That’s a very good question. I honestly have no idea what would happen if Goldman gets further into trouble. Obviously i also have no idea what the yankees books look like.

SJ would probably know a lot more about this but a big issue here is how much debt the yankees took on to finance the new stadium, what form that debt was issued in and what the yankees specified as collateral.

What the yankees really have to be scared about is the scenario SJ laid out. If Goldman has a fire sale and just has to dump their shares in Yes that is potentially a disaster for the yankees, particularly if they’ve used the value of the network as collateral for other debt.

If I were the yanks I would basically do everything I could to make sure I was in position to buy up as much of Goldman’s position in Yes as possible should they need to sell their assets quickly. I would not want unstable partnership in Yes. It’s too important to the yankees.

But whether the yankees wouldn/could want to take on another $1 billion dollars in debt to buy out Goldman I have no idea. Depends on how much cash they have on hand and how whether they could get credit.

It’s very possible that the yankees just wouldn’t be able to borrow enough money to buy out Goldman. At the very least they may have to borrow at very high rates. Again, this is just wild speculation as I have no insight into their financial arrangements or the teams overall balance sheet.

Were the yankees heavily invested in AIG? No idea. Goldman had $20 billion invested in AIG. If AIG had not been rescued Goldman could have been in a lot of trouble.

All businesses are reevaluating their risk right now. The yankees included. Locking in long term expenses in these enormously risky times is not an easy thing to do.

  59. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

SJ: Guess Alex was real glad he was a FA last season!

  60. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

CB: Wow. And my father wonders why I’m suddenly interested in this…

  61. Wave Your Hat

Of course the Yanks are concerned about the financial stability of their partners. That’s a straw man, though.

The question is how they will allocate their payroll, and I’m not sure that will be determined by the financial health of Goldman.

You have piled up assumption on assumption, which is pretty unusual for you. We don’t know what Goldman’s financial future holds. We don’t know if Goldman would be forced to sell its stake, we don’t know if they do if they would be forced to sell at a discount, we don’t know, or (with a nod to Rebecca) I don’t know, what the effect on YES will be of changes in Goldman’s financial situation. I don’t know what the particulars of the Yanks’ credit line are. We don’t know if $20M represents 11-13% of the Yanks 2008 payroll, 10% or some other percentage. My guess is the Yanks don’t know. We don’t know whether there will be a bailout after all, what the effect of a bailout or lack thereof will be, or what in fact the economy will look like at all for the 2008-2009 season.

There are a lot of bears out there who predict very bad times indeed. If that happens, yes, salaries will diminish in all likelihood and Tex may be obtainable for less than $20M, who knows?

I’m just posting on a blog, and can’t say. If the worst hasn’t happened by the time Tex needs to be signed, I for one don’t think it will be a major factor in the contract Tex is offered.

  62. Erik

Dangit, I was the first question and he skipped me!

  63. Erik

    Haha, nevermind.

  64. SJ44

    Rebecca,

    Exactly.

If I was the Yankees, I would try my best to sell 20% of my team to Warren Buffet. He has always resisted overtures to buy into any professional sports teams.

He is a HUGE baseball fan. He is also a friend of Arod’s. He was the guy who encouraged Arod to go to the GS Exec (John Mallory) who, in turn, acted as the go between to re-engage the Yankees in bringing him back.

Given that Buffet not only bought into GS but, as I understand it, is asserting his influence in a big way (more board seats, his preferred execs, etc.) to change GS into a Commercial Bank, perhaps there are some synergies to make a deal.

Buffet LOVES brands and the Yankees are the best brand in sports.

Who knows, maybe this year, its Arod that acts as the go between to help the Yankees instead of the other way around! lol

  65. t-rock

    Per Francessa -

Church hated it here, hated the team and city.

Guess the Marte-Church trade is dead.

  66. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

SJ: That possibility alone makes my head hurt :-D

  67. G. Love

Newsday reporting Cashman back with a 3 year deal.

  68. Ari

“Abreu has been posting the same numbers his entire career so it is not just a result of the guys around him in the lineup. I always love the logic that “oh anybody can hit 100 rbi’s because of where they are in the batting order”, If that’s true than why don’t they? Why do only 3 current major league players have 100 rbi’s in 6 consecutive seasons?
And the “Bobby’s afraid of the wall” stuff we have been hearing since he was with Philly winning a Golden Glove. Maybe he should go slamming into the wall and have to go on the DL like Damon did, then we could complain about him not being healthy.”

And Bobby was posting those number when he was a younger better player when his skills were at their peak, essentially his prime. Bobby has been the beneficiary of Jeter and Damon this past year, he drove them in for 48 of his 100 RBI. They account for nearly half of his overall production and both of them have good speed as well. The reason he has been able to drive 100 runs in consistently with his little streak is also aided by a good lineup. Still you can’t take away he didn’t start declining in value until 2005 and for the past two years he has regressed. He has also consistently been healthy which has aided his streak. The fact is this, if you hit on good teams with guys that hit well in front of you then you’re going to drive in runs. There are hitters that don’t have that but most likely if they did have that luxury then they would get those runners in. You still have to drive them in but still the fact is that they’re there and A-Rod comes up right after you. Pitchers would rather give a mistake to Abreu than him.

And your damn right he should go into the wall if its to save a run in a clutch situation, also notice how he doesn’t really lay out that often for the ball. There is also the fact that his arm while very strong is wildly inaccurate. He is lazy in RF, he is the Manny Ramirez of RF. And how can you really dispute the logic of the fielding bible but use fielding percentage?

  69. CB

“The question is how they will allocate their payroll, and I’m not sure that will be determined by the financial health of Goldman.”

It will. That’s why it’s not a straw man. There is no way that if you run a business and your single biggest partner is facing financial difficulties that you won’t change the way you do business. If your biggest partner gets in trouble then you need to reevaluate how you’ve distributed your own risk. How much no one can say, that’s true.

In very risky times business generally become very cautious. We’re seeing that everywhere. Baseball isn’t going to be very different. People spend disposable income on baseball. That’s a big issue.

Stratifying risk is pretty fundamental to running a business.

In general when financial risk increases business will look to decrease fixed costs, especially long term fixed costs.

In baseball long term fixed costs are long terms salaries.

  73. Ed - looking forward to 2009

  74. Al from BK( Brett Favre 12 TD's 4 INT in 4 games. CC Sabathia: 17-10, 2.70 ERA, 251 K's-253 IP, 10 CG's 5 Shut-Outs.)

  75. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

Yes! I’m unabashed–I want Cashman back.

  76. Ed - looking forward to 2009

    AL –

you are not the only one..

  77. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

The questions ae on a filter, they take a while to show up.

  78. Meaningless Stats

So it came down to his family not wanting to move? Not because he wanted to see his flawed plan through and because?

Wouldn’t shock me if he re-signs if we get off to a bad start next year and don’t have a good off-season.

  79. Ed - looking forward to 2009

    Rebecca – thank.

  80. hank hal

Glad to here he is back, but considering Brian’s heart really seem not to be in it and mix that with the unpredictable nature of Steinbrenner… not a lock he finishes his contract at all.

  81. S.o.S.27(Can i phone a friend?)

    CALL MARK CUBAN!!

What the hell is going on? Yankees going bankrupt? I think the government should use the 700 billion to make sure the Yanks dont end up having a pirates like payroll.

  83. Will

Al and Ed…my questions are getting in bu I don;t see any video or hear anything. Are you guys getting video and audio?

  84. Ed - looking forward to 2009

    Will –

I get a video. but not my questions.

  85. SJ44

I think his heart is definitely into it. The guy still put in 18 hour days, even when the team was out of the race.

He probably got what he was looking for (in terms of autonomy) and he decided to stay.

I know some folks don’t like the guy. But, its better he’s here, and they improve those around him, than start over.

Not a lot of people are breaking down the door looking to work for the Yankees.

One of the reasons why you never hear a lot of rumors of people coming to the Yankees is, its a short list! lol

If they had viable candidates for his job, you can bet your bottom dollar that guys who are Anti-Cash in that front office would be leaking choices to guys like Jon Heyman.

Fact is, nobody, either through media surrogates or agents, were making pitches for the gig.

That’s why other GM’s are complimentary toward the job he had done. Its not a secret that the Yankee job is one of, if not THE hardest GM job in the game.

    CASHMAN SIGNS 3-YEAR DEAL !
    http://www.newsday.com/sports/.....7039.story

  87. S.o.S.27(Can i phone a friend?)

Anyone else think that if we dont make the playoffs again next year. Cashman will be collecting his remaining 2 years salary from home? Im a Cash supporter. But with the money we have coming off the books and a chance to really upgrade the team. I believe this upcoming year will be the most pressure he has felt.

You can put Girardi in the same boat.

  88. GreenBeret7

If Cashman does actually leave the Yankees, I’d be open to them bringing in Kim Ng as the GM, as long as Gene Michael is there to work with her on a one year basis to get her through the first year jitters. She’s been in the system before and had a lot of responsibilities.

  89. Brandon (THE METS BULLPEN IS GANSTA !)..."Keep Manny away !"

Cashman is back ! Rebuilding begins ! PLEASE !

  90. Clare

And Kat O’Brien with the Cashman scoop. HA!

    Peter,

Why is it that you still haven’t linked to Kat’s blog?

  91. S.o.S.27(Can i phone a friend?)

    Due over?

Thoughts on getting Vlad to play right field/dh? Does he have the leggs left to field? I believe he is a free agent.

  92. GreenBeret7

Disregard my post about Ng, then, but, I’d still bring her back to the team.

  93. NITRO

    Sos, no doubt.

If we miss the playoffs again next year, I don’t think either Cashman or Griardi are back. Of Course, it will depend on circumstances but they need to be much better equipped next year to withstand injuries by accumulating good depth. And if they have the same problem of scoring runs, then it is on the GM for bringing back the same team. If Girardi doesn’t improve his communication and dealing with the media/players, then he will be gone too.

  94. Forntoso

Kat O’Brein beats out Francessa, Kay, Madden, Sherman, King, Finesand, Harper, Kepner, Ed Price etc. for a scoop.

Story broke almost 45 minutes ago and nobody has picked up on it yet.

Newsday has always been good breaking stories… they were the ones who first disclosed our interest in Santana in late November.

  95. Brandon (THE METS BULLPEN IS GANSTA !)..."Keep Manny away !"

GB can we fire Afterman and replace her w/ Ng and have her training to be the succesor for Cashman ?

  96. SJ44

Cashman isn’t getting fired after one year on his new deal.

There is no way they will pay him 4 million bucks to sit on the sidelines.

If they didn’t want him back, they could have “Torre-ed” him and offered a one year deal. He would have turned it down, and they would have moved on.

Girardi? Different deal. I think next year is an important year for him. Its not necessarily, “playoffs or bust” because you don’t know how things shake out during the season.

If they feel the team is moving in the right direction, he stays. If not? I could see them making a change because its much easier to eat one year on a deal than 2.

  97. Ed - looking forward to 2009

If Cashman failed to acquire Texieira:

Garko for 1B or V-Mart for 1B seeing how he’s a free agent to be next offseason and Kelly Shoppach emerged as an everyday catcher?

  98. Clare

BTW – I wonder if Hank was Kat’s source.

  99. SJ44

    Brandon,

Kim isn’t coming back. Its a downward move for her to do so.

There is a very good chance she gets the Mariners job. If she doesn’t get the Mariners job, her responsibilities with the Dodgers dwarf what she would be doing in NY.

  100. R-Tek

If Girardi is fired next year, but Cashman stays on… there is no accountability in this organization. It will be like the Knicks. Isiah allowed to go through coach after coach while he is Teflon because he has the owner in his corner.

Thankfully, Girardi has Hank in his corner. This might turn into a Hank/Hal power play. Hank/Girardi vs. Hal/Cashman.

  101. mel

    Cashman back? Good news.

I’m on the road today, but I wanted to give you guys a heads up. If you’re a night owl and you REALLY want to listen to baseball, there will be live-streaming the BeachBoys game tonight.

Brackman & Bleich went Sat. & Sun. so we won’t see them, but Yankee position players Romine & Sublett might see action. Buster Posey & A-rod pal, Yonder Alonso, are also on the team.

It’s on the *blog* where I also linked to an article about Brackman.

  102. GreenBeret7

Is anybody getting audio or visual from this site?

  103. Dave D

Considering we have 3 powerhouse teams in our division with top 5 pitching staffs (especially with TB adds Price next year), it it not a lock by any stretch that we make the playoffs even if we have a great off-season.

And if we don’t get CC, I doubt we will. Even with him, its not a lock.

  104. #9

Good job by Steins in getting Cashman deal done now.

There’s lots of work to be done in the coming months.

  105. Bronxbyte

Let the front office restructure begin and soon.
Surround Cashman with good baseball minds to be of able assistance minus the interference of Levine, Trost, et al.
Other teams are aware that the Yankees will be very aggressive so no time should be wasted putting plans in place before the GM meetings November 3-6.

  106. Clare

    mel,

Thanks for the link to the Brackman article. He’s certainly saying all the right things.

Have you read anything about how he felt after his first start? The results weren’t there, but as long as his elbow feels okay that’s all that matters.

  107. #9

“I wonder if Hank was Kat’s source.”

I wonder if Hal told Hank yet :-)

  108. Brandon (THE METS BULLPEN IS GANSTA !)..."Keep Manny away !"

Did you guys see the article on Brett Marshall ?

  109. Wilson

Get rid of Levine, Trost, Afterman, Felix the Gardner

Keep Hank but let him stay in his cage.

  110. mel

    Clare,

    I’ll take a look.

I’m impressed that Pete didn’t drop the chat to chase the story.

Was it a good chat? I’ll catch the re-run.

  112. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

    Any other sources on Cash?

  113. Erik

    Thanks for chatting today Pete!!!

“Surround Cashman with good baseball minds..”

Expect Joe Girardi to play a bigger role this off season in advising Cash. Torre, from what I’ve read, didn’t get much involved in off season decisions but I think Girardi will.

    Hi all,

If I remember correctly the last time the US was in a recession Alex Rodriguez, Manny Ramirez and Derek jeter all signed ridiculous contracts.

Maybe before we all start pulling our dollars out of banks and buying all the gold bullion we can get our hands on we should all just wait and see what happens? Of course this is all just my opinion.

In another 10 years we can worry about social security and peak oil being the drivers that will make the US fall into another recession.

Yankees’ Cashman to return as GM
    by Ed Price/The Star-Ledger
    Tuesday September 30, 2008, 4:41 PM
The Yankees have announced the Brian Cashman is staying on as general manager, with a new contract through 2011.

Cashman, whose contract is up Oct. 31, had been undecided about staying and at least somewhat interested in the opening in Seattle.

Cashman, the GM since 1998, is to hold a news conference Wednesday.

  119. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

According to the news, Bloomberg seeking a third term.

  120. vtred

Is this article that Francessa is reading with Torre, Mattingly, and Bowa ripping the Yankees new? Or is it the same one?

  121. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Happy New Year (?)

raymagnetic: The last recession was nothing like this.

  122. saucY

“Cliff Lee- Comeback player of the year.. no Moose?”

what a bunch of baloney. i love how criteria for awards changes once a Yankee is involved in the decision. we’ve seen it before with Ichiro winning ROY, but not Matsui a year or 2 later.

they need to rename the award – Breakout Player of the Year.

What did Cliff Lee come back from? years of sucking and mediocrity?

and who votes for this award? is it the BBWAA again?

  123. SJ44

    Rebecca,

Its a done deal. Cash is back.

I doubt Girardi is going to have a lot of personnel input.

His roster input will be minimal. Will he give suggestions? Yes. That will be about the extent of it.

Success brings more input for managers re: personnel issues. Until he has more success, his power in that area won’t increase.

  124. E-Rod

God, I am going going to be rooting so hard for the Cubs.

This Torre love fest is so nauseating.

  125. Mike

question for anyone in the know:

why is it that some of the beat writers are saying that Jeremy Bleich will need TJ in the offseason. If he needs TJ, is there any reason at all to risk further damage to other areas, including the elbow, by sending him to Hawaii? How can that line of thinking make any sense at all? Are they getting Bleich mixed up with Bittle (who the Yanks didn’t sign)?

i know some of the beat writers know nothing about the prospects, but come on now, this is the second time I’ve seen this

Give credit where it’s due, Kat broke this story first.

  127. COL 88

Cashman, the GM since 1998, is to hold a news conference Wednesday.

“I know I’ve said it before, but it’s an incredible opportunity and honor to hold the title of general manager for the New York Yankees,” Cashman said in a statement issued by the team. “With it comes a great responsibility to ownership, the people who wear the uniform and our fan base.

“I’ve got a job to finish here. That’s the bottom line.

“I consider coming off a season where we didn’t reach the playoffs for the first time since 1993 as a personal challenge. I’ve never been one to run from a challenge, and I look forward to having the chance to go after this thing again.”

  128. bru

oh, and congrats to Cash on a new contract

and congrats to us, as yankee fans :D

either i’m the only one really outraged by the cliff lee thing…

or the rest of you realized there are new threads to post in.

“I doubt Girardi is going to have a lot of personnel input.”

SJ44- You have a lot of excellent ideas and insight, but in my opinion, in order to maximize the teams perception of their talent, any input from the coaches and manager would be prudent for the GM and team to listen to.
