wave your hat nailed it, we fleeced the pirates in that deal by giving up one decent prospect with falling stock in tabata and 3 marginal-non prospects for 2 players who can contribute. granted they might not be our biggest needs coming into this year but they were needs at the time (we havent had a real lefty out of the pen since stanton in his prime, and matsui and damon had missed time with injuries). maybe tabata and kennedy packaged could pique the interest for a guy like kemp or votto but we still have all the chips that wouldve been needed to land a guy like that and more prospects similar in value to the ones we gave up for marte/nady. btw, nady's versatility is what makes him valuable, he provides a decent bat at two corner positions and 1b if need be. he is probably one alternative for 1b if tex cant be brought in and a much sounder defensive option than posada or matsui whove never played significant time there.

cashman is trying to run things like they were run leading up to our dynasty. we kept our jeters/pettites/mos/posadas to form our core, and a cost effective one at that because they are younger and cost controlled, and we added through FA with a few great trades thrown in. now he is looking to keep our canos/hughes/jobas/wangs and to build again through FA and hopefully find another o'niell/justice/cone/clemens trade to put this team back on top. this panicking, crying for trading all our top prospects is exactly what got us in trouble starting again in 2000 and is the reason we havent won a series and had by a wide margin the largest payroll in the league every year. cash knows what it took to make this team great before, he will make it happen again.

We traded Jose Tabata, Dan McCutcheon, Russ Ohlendorf and Jeff Karstens.

I don't think we could have gotten any of the guys you mention for that crew.

At the time, Tabata was about as unappealing as you can get. He was a reclamation project.

The rest of those guys are just guys. They aren't bring anything special.

As I said, if the Pirates would have upgraded Nady to Bey, I would have thrown in Melancon.

Wave Your Hat:

so now with marte gone as you suggest the yankees traded all those kids for nady? come on.

the prospects needed to be used to fix the centerfield, first base, pitching problems that we STILL have.

i would much rather have votto, kemp or some other good young first baseman or centerfielder than nady and marte.then we would only have to concentrate on pitching and first base or center field wich is not nearly as bad.

having 3 problems instead of two put's more pressure on trading hughes, cano and minor leaguers to fill those needs.

My Hat is off to anyone who can decipher Cashman's comments in his press conference. Could mean just about anything IMO.

Certainly don't read it to mean he won't go after CC or Tex.

Consider this people... how would you like to have a roster of:
C - Howard, Elston
1B - Pepitone, Joe
2B - Richardson, Bobby
SS - Kubek, Tony
3B - Boyer, Clete
OF - Mantle, Mickey
OF - Maris, Roger
OF - Tresh, Tom

SP - Ford, Whitey
SP - Terry, Ralph
SP - Stottlemyre, Mel
SP - Downing, Al
SP - Bouton, Jim

This is the 1964 Yankees. More a group of Gods then a roster. Great offense. Great defense. Great Pitching. They had it all. A 99 Win season and a WS berth (again). In the previous 17 years, the Yankees were in the WS 14 times, and won 10 of them!

WS Games 3,4 and 5 at the Stadium average slightly over 66,300 in attendence! This series saw 2 of the 3 greatest fielding 3BMen ever, Clete Boyer and Ken Boyer. A God named Mickey Mantle posted a series line of .333 .467 .792 1.259 with THREE HRs!

But it wasn't enough. In an upset, the Cardinals beat us in 7 games. BUMMER! But for the Yankees, there was always next year.

And I became a fan in 1965 (ergo... OldYanksFan). And I couldn't wait for revenge and another WS Championship! But unbeknowst to me, history tells us that 1965 was the beginning of 'The Dark Days'. Out of 20 teams, 10 in each league, the Yankees finished 6th. The year after... dead last. 70 Wins. The 3rd worst record in all of MLB!

So for many years after, rooting for the Yankees meant praying they would finally reach .500. I had to wait TWELVE years for the Yankees to see another World Series.

Much like the 1965 Yankees, our 2008 team has some baseball Gods on it. But they are getting old. They are still studs, but past their prime. Like the 1965 team, we don't know when ARod, Jeter, Posada and Mo will fall off the Cliff. And like the 1965 Yankees, for a long time, there was not a lot on the farm to continue the dynasty.

And whether you like Cashman or not, he understands that 1965 CAN happen again. As a matter of fact, the 1997-2005 Yankees were the very blueprint for this kind of disaster.

In 1918, we beat the Germans to end World War I, which was dubbed 'the Last Great War'.... that is until we fought in Germans again in1941. Hostory has a funny way of repreating itself.... unless you are very careful.
And Cashman understands this.

You heard Cashman say it in his press conference, that in 2005, he could see 'The Dark Days' coming again, and he wasn't going to let it happen.

We were able to ride the coattails of Bernie, Jeter, Posada, Pettitte and the Great Mariano for some years. While some tasty FA signings have kept us on or near the top for the last decade, we have been doing a slow fade over the last 5 years. And 'our boys' are only getting older.

So in 2005, Cashman began his attempt to reverse history.... to look past THIS year and ahead to the future, and to start again to build a franchise that has been ignoring the future for over a decade.

Since then, we have said NO to a lot of tasty FAs and trades, with Santana being the most recent. And Cashman has taken the hit. And folks, there will be more hits this winter. Even with Yankee money, it takes some time.
Whether it's done in 2009, or takes another year, or 2, is yet to be seen.

But Cashman has made a commitment to put us back on top.
Not for just this year or next, but to change the structure and dymanics of the franchise, so we never again see The Dark Days approaching.

So for all you 'Fans' that think 89 Wins is an embarrassment... a failure.... you simpy don't understand baseball... or history. It is not automatic, even if it has seemed that way for a while.

For all you 'Fans' that think buying CC and Tex and Sheets and Peavy and whatever other overpriced studs there are... for all you 'Fans' that think nothing of trading Cano or Hughes or whatever young talent we have invested in... you are living in 1998. Cashman in living in 2008.

You 'fans' just want to re-live history without concern for the future. The very stategy that has us where we are now.
Thank God Cashman took control in 2005 and started stockpiling arms. Thank God we already have at least and Wang, Cano, Hughes and many other kids who have contributed.

The reason the Sox are on top is not Manny or Big Papi. They are the front line... the BIG guys. But it is Hanley and Sanchez, who turned into Beckett and Lowell, Youk, Pedroia, Lowrie, Papelbom, Lester, Masterson, Ellsbury, Buchholz and more, that make the Red Sox truly powerful.

So for all you 'Fans' that think 89 Wins is an embarrassment... a failure....
maybe before your next rant, before you barf up your next post....
maybe you should learn a bit about baseball... and history.

I'm a Yankees fan, and for all of this year's teams failures and disappointments, they're still my guys and I'm proud of them.
