Girardi wraps up the season on WFAN

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Oct 02, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Joe Girardi was on WFAN this afternoon with Mike Francesa. You can listen to the interview on the WFAN site.

It was the usual stuff, much of what you heard on Monday. There was one part that had to make Brian Cashman cringe, however.

Asked about his relationship with the media, Girardi said: “I think it’s pretty good. I think I’m comfortable with the media and the media is comfortable with me. You take away (the injury issue) and I think it’s outstanding.”

Outstanding? Meanwhile, Cashman said several times yesterday, including on WFAN, that Girardi needs to improve how he deals with the press because it’s important in the New York market. Forget what I think, that’s the GM talking.

Those organizational meetings should be very interesting later this month.

I think maybe Joe is the kind of guy who puts a rosy spin on everything because he’s a positive guy. Let’s not overreact and say Brian would “cringe”……it was just a statement. What would be the point of Joe saying he doesn’t have a good relationship with the media? Now I think you’re looking for things to pick on, Pete.

  2. mel October 2nd, 2008 at 6:59 pm

Oh, Pete. Girardi’s just wired differently. He’s a very positive person and speaks accordingly.

We know the deal. We’re intelligent enough to know what’s real and what’s BS.

“You take away (the injury issue) and I think it’s outstanding.””

Other than that Mrs. Lincoln . . .

  4. yikes October 2nd, 2008 at 7:00 pm

uh oh, all the “CC doesn’t know how to pitch in October” crap is going to start soon…

  5. Vrsce October 2nd, 2008 at 7:02 pm

CC has been asked to do too much.

  6. TKinDC October 2nd, 2008 at 7:03 pm

    lol Bronx Jeers

  7. Mike October 2nd, 2008 at 7:04 pm

CC implodes on a grand slam.

ya pitchers don’t pitch 4 consecutive three day rest games for a reason.

I don’t see how the Brewers can win without another three day rest game from CC.

  8. Tom October 2nd, 2008 at 7:07 pm

let joe be who he is. I get the feeling that he was trying to be something he wasn’t last year. Where was the intense fiery person who was supposed be a hard ass?

  9. no.27 October 2nd, 2008 at 7:07 pm

I know it’s October and the Yankees aren’t in the playoffs, but who the Yankees 3rd base coach is next year and Girardi’s relationship with the media are hardly the “very interesting” topics of the organizational meetings. Starting pitching, 1st base, and Joba Chamberlain are the topics that will make the meetings interesting. The media issue will mean nothing as far and I think Cash should (and probably will) let Joe make the final call on his coaches.

  10. Dont-Forget-Where-You-Came-From-Cheese Mac October 2nd, 2008 at 7:09 pm

Pete, I generally like your stuff but this axe you are grinding with Girardi re: the Media smacks of sour grapes.

  11. Global Warming October 2nd, 2008 at 7:09 pm

    2 Things:

A)Priority 1 should still be to sign Sabathia despite another bad postseason start. It was only days ago where he pitched a complete game that basically lifted the Brewers into the playoffs.

    B) I hope the Brewers get swept.

  12. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and save Robbie Cano! October 2nd, 2008 at 7:10 pm

    CC needs a vacation

  13. mel October 2nd, 2008 at 7:10 pm

Sure it’s important to get along with the media. But an inordinate amount of ink was spent on Girardi. If you guys didn’t talk about him, what stories would you have followed?

I think Girardi was taking one for Alex. :)

    http://blogs.nypost.com/sports......html#more

I am not a Joel Sherman fan, but I think he’s hit the mark on this one.

    I’ll highlight a few comments:

**If I had to speculate what bothers him the most it is that when the team made the playoffs that was treated as obvious, as if no one was in charge, and when the team didn’t this year, there was a piling on atmosphere. I know, for example, that Cashman would say it took not just strategy, but character and guts in 2005 not to give in to the April-May screams to fix the team by selling off whatever few chips a meager farm system had. Instead, he summoned Robinson CanoRobinson Cano and Chien-Ming WangChien-Ming Wang , and began the process of breaking the YankeesNew York Yankees from the pathology of always favoring instant gratification while neglecting the future. **

Bingo, Joel, and we are seeing the hypocrisy of the NY media now in how Omar gets a giant pass and Cash gets raked over the coals.

**Can the Yanks find this species? Cashman wants to believe has been hoarding prospects such as Phil Hughes, Dellin Betances and Andrew Brackman who are going to blossom into top-end starters. In a lot of ways this is going to be his legacy: Can he get the young starting pitching right?**

Cash has to be right on Phil, etc….. I absolutely agree. It’s no secret that I think fans are absurdly impatient when it comes to Phil – they clearly hold him to a higher standard than any other young pitcher. Sherman gives some examples of pitchers who are just now coming into their own after struggling for awhile – and those are just a few. There are plenty more where that came from sprinkled all through baseball’s history. Phil is going to be an excellent pitcher and fortunately, he’s got the patience that fans don’t have.

  15. Davios October 2nd, 2008 at 7:12 pm

“Those organizational meetings should be very interesting later this month.”

    Pete,

If you honestly believe that Joe Girardi’s relationship with you and the rest of the NY media is going to be a hot topic at the organizational meetings, you quite frankley have a far too self-important view of yourself.

Something tells me the Steinbrenners are going to have other concerns to address aside from the fact that Joe doesn’t greet the media with hugs and kisses. As much as fans in the New York market hold a ridiculous sense of entitlement, the media here is exactly the same way. Willie was roasted, Joe is getting lambasted, Buck caught alot of it at times, Mangini has been criticized, Coughlin has been ridiculed. If the media doesn’t appreciate how Joe treats them they should take a look at Boston and how Belichek treats reporters.

  16. Dont-Forget-Where-You-Came-From-Cheese Mac October 2nd, 2008 at 7:12 pm

CC should not be signed. Guaranteed he goes down at some point next year with an elbow or shoulder problem. Also Joba is a starter. He is not an issue to be dealt with at the organizational meetings.

  17. randy l October 2nd, 2008 at 7:13 pm

    ” Forget what I think”

    i’ll try real hard.

  18. Braintrust October 2nd, 2008 at 7:15 pm

I think the media and fans will get a look at the real Girardi next seson. I think he was probably trying too hard this year not to be himself, You can see the strain. Joe Torre was a let it slide off your back type of guy, Joe Girardi is an FU type of guy. The media isn’t used to that, but everyone is different. I think with Girardi there’s always going to be a line in the sand with the media. He just has to learn to say “No Comment”, instead of trying to spin things.

  19. no.27 October 2nd, 2008 at 7:15 pm

CC doesn’t know how to pitch on 3 days rest 4 times in a row. If I was CC and the offense didn’t put up some runs and the defense didn’t start using their gloves I’d probly leave the team after the game. He’s the only reason they are in the playoffs, and I think he’s going to realize the help the Yankees would give him in terms of offense and bullpen help.

  20. Brian October 2nd, 2008 at 7:15 pm

I don’t comment here much, but this is ridiculous. Cashman completely exonerated Girardi yesterday on WFAN on the issue re: Rivera, and he made general statements about dealing with the New York media, that you can’t hide stuff, etc. He did not in any way say that Girardi did a terrible job in that regard, but rather it was a good lesson in how to say “no comment,” etc., when you need to.

For Girardi to say that his relationship is outstanding is just a nice, positive statement. He believes in doing a good job, in reporters doing their good job, and that everyone is ready to do so.

Your eager, nearly maniacal effort to blow smoke in people’s eyes to distort our perception of Girardi is getting ridiculous. What did he say or do to you personally? That is all I’m left to think on this…or are you merely trying to create a story in a relatively story-less moment for the Yanks?

  21. mel October 2nd, 2008 at 7:17 pm

    randy l,

LOL. The only way you can forget, is to stop coming here.

  22. Braintrust October 2nd, 2008 at 7:19 pm

I’m very concerned about CC Sabathia pitching for the Yankees. He’s pitching like there’s no tomorrow, and obviously looking for a gigantic payday. The problem is, if he’s pitching without regard to wear and injury to get his contract, what happens after. Is his attitude, damn my arm as long as I get paid? I don’t trust it at all.

  23. mel October 2nd, 2008 at 7:23 pm

CC, apparently, is a rarity in baseball. A great teammate willing to put his rather large body on the line.

I offer a slightly above market, shorter contract. I would hate to overpay and regret it later. I cannot see throwing money at someone to entice them. A nice contract, a chance to make the playoffs, a great bullpen, a new stadium, and Yankee pride should be more than enough.

  24. The Monarch October 2nd, 2008 at 7:30 pm

    Peter,

I have a tremendous amount of respect for what you do here, but I honestly believe you’re off the mark here.

Does Girardi need to improve his media skills?
    Yes.

But frankly, I think you and your peers were spoiled by dealing with the most media-savvy manager in baseball. How many of your peers were there for the early years of Buck Showalter? I bet the stories are similar.

I have difficulty in accepting that this is a major topic at the organizational meetings. I think Girardi knows he needs to change how deals with you guys, but I don’t think it’s anywhere near the top of the priorities of the franchise.

Plus, no matter how hard he tries, Girardi is who he is; to a certain extent he’ll probably be unable to change. If he wins a Series or two in his time here, no one will care.

  25. ZMAN7777 October 2nd, 2008 at 7:31 pm

Personally, I don’t care how Girardi acts with the media. There are many current and former managers in MLB who don’t give two hoots about the media. Girardi is respectful. That should be plenty. If you want a deeper relationship, adopt a child. I mean, seriously, is it another slow news day??

  26. vinny-b October 2nd, 2008 at 7:32 pm

Pete, you seem like a ok person on your chats.

however, i have to wonder, did Girardi not say hello to you one day? Or did did he not smile?

    Girardi is not the problem.

  27. Jonathon October 2nd, 2008 at 7:34 pm

Braintrust…this is the concern with CC…

Over the past 2 seasons, he’s got 500 regular season innings on that arm. Plus the postseason…

This is the 2nd postseason in a row that he has struggled.

Today the ball is up in the zone, usually the sign of a tired pitchers.

    Caveat emptor

  28. Braintrust October 2nd, 2008 at 7:34 pm

    What’s a fair offer for Sabathia 5/100M?

  29. mel October 2nd, 2008 at 7:35 pm

This should be CC’s last inning. The game is out of reach and CC’s saved the bullpen some innings.

Totally irresponsible to make CC pitch for so long, after what he did over the last 12 days.

  30. Braintrust October 2nd, 2008 at 7:36 pm

    Probably 5/125M.

  31. ZMAN7777 October 2nd, 2008 at 7:36 pm

Before you go after Sabathia, we need to know how he treats the media, his mom, Aunt Gladys, the paperboy, stray animals, and airport Hare Krishnas.

  32. vinny-b October 2nd, 2008 at 7:36 pm

    it doesn’t matter.

CC is not coming here. I love him, tho.

  33. Nick in SF October 2nd, 2008 at 7:37 pm

Worried about CC because he’s pitching like there’s no tomorrow?

There is no tomorrow for CC, methinks. Next pitch in pinstripes!

  39. darkmoonfire October 2nd, 2008 at 7:40 pm

Pete, keep up the good work.

I don’t understand why everyone keeps attacking you for doing your job. (and well, I hasten to add) Part of the manager’s job is also to manage the media. This, whether the media have unreasonable expectations or not — and in Baseball, I don’t really think they do — Girardi MUST win them over successfully regardless. Girardi has completely failed at this. Everyone in the media is reporting problems with Girardi, your voice is not alone.

In addition, you are providing insight and information to support what I have clearly seen in Girardi, this is a man who is not motivating anyone. This is a man who is not winning hearts and minds. It’s not just the media, it absolutely has to be the team too. He lies to the media, the team has to question if he also lies to them. I suspect this is a really big part of the lackluster performances this year.

Girardi has a responsibility to the fans. He must use the media effectively to communicate to the fans. He does not.

  40. Braintrust October 2nd, 2008 at 7:40 pm

    CC career postseason, excluding tonight, 1-2, 7.17 Era, 21.1ip, 27 Hits, 17ER, 18 Walks!, 19K.

    Let’s get Derek Lowe instead.

  41. jennifer October 2nd, 2008 at 7:41 pm

Now that they lifted CC early in the game, he’ll likely pitch in game 4 if it goes that far.

Mel- agreed what they did with him was totally irresponsible. What was this the fourth time he pitched on short rest. If I were the Yankees I’d be very weary of signing him after they abused his arm.

  42. autograph seeker October 2nd, 2008 at 7:41 pm

If the worst thing you can say against a manager is bad relations with the press, than that must mean he is doing a pretty good job actually managing. And just for the bullpen alone, he has been doing a good job.

Moreover, Joe seems like he is learning from mistakes. He started to correct his stupid platoons which weren’t working and so hopefully he gets more compatible with the media.

I would have more concern on CC about his size going forward and that long term contracts for pitchers generally fail because they start to lose their stuff in their 30′s, rather than too many innings this season since he has proven he can handle it since his stuff has remained effective (until today)

Milwaukee didn’t have any choice. They had to start CC, today.

  47. Jonathon October 2nd, 2008 at 7:45 pm

He was not 100% effective until he moved to the National League…he struggled to start the 08 season in the AL.

  48. arliss October 2nd, 2008 at 7:46 pm

He hasn’t stopped looking for things to pick on since day 1 of Girardi’s tenure, Betsy….it didn’t just start.

  49. jennifer October 2nd, 2008 at 7:46 pm

98 pitches in 3 plus innings!! OUCH!

  50. ZMAN7777 October 2nd, 2008 at 7:47 pm

Did Earl Weaver, Dick Williams, Sparky Anderson, and Billy Martin care how the media perceived them? I’m sure each anguished over each word he uttered. Being honest and direct with the media was foremost on their minds. Winning baseball games was nice, but media relations was important.

Here’s another problem with our society, be it business, sports or other: style has become more significant than substance. It’s obvious at work each day. We need more successful curmudgeons!

  51. mel October 2nd, 2008 at 7:47 pm

The fact of the matter is that the Brewers are being 1-hit. Great job by Meyers, who hasn’t always been so good this season, so far.

  52. jennifer October 2nd, 2008 at 7:47 pm

pauly- I guess the Brewers only have 2 pitches? Didn’t they have 5 starting pitchers this year?

  53. you gotta have faith (well, theres always next year...)(MOOSE FOR PRESIDENT!) October 2nd, 2008 at 7:48 pm

hmm well this is a dilema now

    either CC was just tired,
or he has problems shutting a team down in the post season

neither choice is good, but we need a pitcher that can pitch in the playoffs, just getting us there wont be enough

  54. Dont-Forget-Where-You-Came-From-Cheese Mac October 2nd, 2008 at 7:48 pm

    darkmoonfire-

I heard Posada say that the main reason he and Wang got hurt was because they felt Girardi was a liar. Nice pickup on your part.

  55. Doreen October 2nd, 2008 at 7:51 pm

As far as I’ve been able to discern, Pete’s biggest concern with Girardi was that he lied about injuries. That issue has been addressed by Cashman and by Girardi when he publicly apologized to the media and said he would make an effort going forward to handle the situation better; to balance the media’s need to know with is need to keep certain information quiet.

it seems to me that there’s not much more you an ask right now. Problem identified, problem addressed, solution in the works.

Pete has said Girardi is a nice guy and this was the one area he was severely lacking.

That would make me assume that in most other areas, while Girardi may not be the most engaging conversationalist, he was not horrible to deal with.

It makes no sense at this point to continue to belabor the point. Girardi said, except for the injury thing, the relationship was outstanding. I’ve noticed “outstanding” is a word Girardi uses often. It’s meaning should probably be tempered a bit to mean he’s pleased with the way it’s going.

He’s a guy who looks on the positive side of things.

Why can’t there be a moratorium on this issue until we see how he handles himself next season with regard to injuries. In the meantime, I wouldn’t hold my breath if I were the beat writers waiting to hear heartwarming stories of baseball days gone by. Girardi didn’t play with Bob Gibson, after all.

  56. Braintrust October 2nd, 2008 at 7:52 pm

Imagine the buffet spread after Prince and CC hit it!!

  57. Doreen October 2nd, 2008 at 7:52 pm

Actually he apologized privately to the media, but it was made public in subsequent reports.

  58. Nick in SF October 2nd, 2008 at 7:53 pm

It all stems back to this seldom-cited Joe Girardi quote:

“I’ve never really cared for Springsteen, I think he’s overrated. I’m a Billy Joel man, myself. Now that guy can write songs.”

  59. S.o.S.27(How many lifelines do each get?) October 2nd, 2008 at 7:53 pm

“I heard Posada say that the main reason he and Wang got hurt was because they felt Girardi was a liar.”

Dont forget the under achieving player performances from most of the team this year was because of ALLLLL his LIES.

Have a good night fellas. Cant get myself to watch OTHER baseball. Yankees or bust.

  60. pauly October 2nd, 2008 at 7:54 pm

The Brewers have some ugly uniforms.

They should’ve kept the 1980′s/blue pinstripes version.

  62. ZMAN7777 October 2nd, 2008 at 7:55 pm

Nick — good one. I hear it all stemmed from the song Born To Run. Girardi, a catcher, took offense to the title.

  63. mel October 2nd, 2008 at 7:55 pm

The relievers HATE Girardi for forcing them into regular work and for sticking with them even when they struggled.

Edwar especially hates Joe G. and wants Joe T. back.

Mo really hates Girardi for honoring his request to keep the shoulder issue quiet.

  64. Tom October 2nd, 2008 at 7:56 pm

infact, girardi’s lies are to blame for hughes an ipk not having a win. Matsui’s knee, joba’s shoulder, damon’s shoulder, melky’s performance, cano’s bad year, shelly duncan, sexton, rasner, ponson, Arod’s quad, giambi shaving, jeter’s bad year, pettite’s down year, the pudge trade, and latroy hawkins.

  65. Vader October 2nd, 2008 at 7:57 pm

A night like this will save the Yankees front office from the fans/media if they can’t sign him.

IMO, I would be a little leary on giving him more than four/five years. If the Yankees can’t get him on thier terms, I say let him walk.

  66. Alfred E. Kennedy October 2nd, 2008 at 7:58 pm

Red Sox = 2000-2003 Devils, the top organization in the sport, but not a dynasty.

    1999-2007 Spurs = Dynasty
    2000-2003 Lakers = Dynasty
    1996-2000 Yankees = Dynasty
    2001-2004 Patriots = Dynasty

All those teams had the same core for all their titles. There was too much turnover in the franchise to link the 04 and 06 titles.

Beckett, Matsuzaka, Papelbon, Pedroia, Youkallis, Lowell, Drew, Okijima, Delcarmen, Lester, Crisp, Ellsbury, Lugo etc. were not on the 04 staff. And now Manny and Schilling, 2 of the legends of October and key parts in both titles are now gone and not apart of this 2008 team.

They are just the best organization in the sport with the best decision makers and players. Not a dynasty though.

  67. ZMAN7777 October 2nd, 2008 at 7:59 pm

It all stems back to this seldom-cited Joe Girardi quote:
I’ve never really cared for Springsteen, I think he’s overrated. I’m a Billy Joel man, myself. Now that guy can write songs.”

Actually Girardi was misquoted. He said:

“I like some Bruce Springsteen songs, Pete. He is not my favorite. But it’s cool that you like him.”

  83. t-rock October 2nd, 2008 at 8:04 pm

Joe says he has an outstanding relationship with the media?

Has Girardi been taking lessons in delusional from Ian Kennedy?

  91. Peter Abraham October 2nd, 2008 at 8:09 pm

I should have expected it. Every time I pass along something that isn’t 100 percent pro Yankees, the usual suspects rip me.

Fact: Cashman goes on WFAN on Wednesday and says Girardi really needs to work on handling the media because it’s a problem.

Fact: 24 hours later, Girardi goes on WFAN and says his relationship with the media is “outstanding.”

I’m just pointing that out and pointing out that the man did an interview. Sorry that offends some of you. If you think everything is outstanding, I’m not sure what to say.

Meanwhile, BBfan and others, please try and comment without cursing. Get a dictionary or something. Or, better yet, have the guts to send me an e-mail.

Rivera, Marte, Melancon, Bruney, Coke, Veras, Sanchez

    Good bye and good night.

  95. trisha - BRING BOBBY BACK! October 2nd, 2008 at 8:10 pm

On to more important topics. Honest to God there are some. In the thread below we were discussing how a few of the Sux fans (my guess) said that if the Sux won this year they would be declared a dynasty. I immediately dismissed that notion pointing out that 3 wins in 5 years with two coming as a wild card entry hardly qualifies as a dynasty. I then decided I would like to be voted in as the dynasty annointer. I already have one vote (S.O.S.)

Here was my campaign speech. I would appreciate your consideration and your vote!

Anyway, S.O.S., in fairness I should get to choose the point at which the Sux could be considered a dynasty. After all, I more than have the credentials to do so. First of all, I have a thorough disgust with, I mean familiarity with the Sux. I have been able to observe their longstanding mediocrity and accidental lucky seasons and I have been able to do so up close and with GREAT objectivity. Who better to decide when a team is a dynasty than someone who knows it will never happen? I mean at least you know you will get total objectivity with me where someone who is more faint of heart may be tempted to annoint too quickly.

You have to have impeccably high standards to be able to accurately crown a dynasty. I assure you that nothing less than six world series appearances in eight years, with at least four of the six bringing world series wins, would be acceptable in my estimation…

If you do vote for me to be dynasty decider, I promise to bring integrity and objectivity to the role. I won’t let you down, and I certainly won’t let any challenge to the Yankees as king of the dynasties be taken lightly.

    Thank you!

  98. jennifer October 2nd, 2008 at 8:11 pm

Pete you said that Joe admitted that his problem was dealing with injuries. Did he have other issues. The only issue you ever seemed to point out was that he wasn’t 100% honest with injuries.

  100. ZMAN7777 October 2nd, 2008 at 8:12 pm

I think I’m sufficiently and completely anti-Cashman to not be labeled a blind follower. Pete’s repeated comments on a non-issue are, however, deserving of skepticism and humor.

  101. Clint October 2nd, 2008 at 8:12 pm

i think i know a way girardi can get back in pete’s good graces. he needs to hire springsteen to be his third base coach.

every time some reporter questioned him about sending someone he’d have the perfect answer.
“baby we were born to run”

    what could pete say?

myself, i think he would bring a lot of energy to to the coaching staff.

  105. Dave D October 2nd, 2008 at 8:14 pm

Cashman needs to shake up Girardi’s coaching staff.

Get him Don Baylor and a new 3B coach.

Re-assigning Thompson shouldn’t be a problem considering Girardi didn’t pick him anyway, Cashman gave him the job.

Girardi shouldn’t think we’re looking for a scapegoat, we’re just looking to improve the staff to help HIM.

  119. Nick in SF October 2nd, 2008 at 8:24 pm

  139. Ed - looking forward to 2009 October 2nd, 2008 at 8:34 pm

    Mel -

actually I wasn’t planning to do “quantity”. I’m just going with facts. As for as we know, Kennedy isnt in the Yankee’s 2009 plans and Horne isnt going to be called up and will be a rule 5 eligible this offseason. Horne has been injuried too often. The best thing to do is trade him instead of losing him in a rule 5. As for Veras and Ramirez goes, yes they are expandable and we have Sanchez, Cox, and Melancon to replace them.

  140. vinny-b October 2nd, 2008 at 8:34 pm

EY: you kidding? A team will give him a Santana contract.

at this time, I expect NYY will add:

    Lowe, and

    1 of Burnett/Peavey

  141. Nick in SF October 2nd, 2008 at 8:35 pm

“Live at the Isle of Wight” is tremendous too, and it really makes “Tommy” come alive, no pun intended.

  142. Tank October 2nd, 2008 at 8:35 pm

I actually like Edwar better than Veras just becasue Edwar has better control and can get the big K with runners on base.

All depends how Joe wants the pen formulated next year and how guys look in ST, as we;ve seen year after year, BPs are year to year. Look at teams like the Indians and D’Backs, they had the top pen in the league last year and this year their pens were awful with the same guys. The Phillies and Rays had the worst pens in baseball last year and this year they are at the top of the league.

I’d keep all these guys around and let them battle it out.

  143. ZMAN7777 October 2nd, 2008 at 8:35 pm

Oh, and all the people on this board who cry that the ‘Torre Lovefest’ will be non stop.

I think I read something last night declaring that if Girardi managed the Dodgers, they would have the season wrapped up in August/September. Yeah, and if Torre managed the Yankees they would be in First place in July.
What nonsense both statements are. Who knows what would have happened? All we know is one team is in, one is out.

I still think we should get CC. He will give you 200 above average innings and right now he will help us get to the playoffs. Missing the playoffs this year tells me we shouldn’t base our signings on post season stats. We can’t assume we are in teh playoffs like we used to be able too.

  157. Yankee Trader October 2nd, 2008 at 8:58 pm

We could have gotten Brett Myers when he was sent to the minors, but noone on this site wanted him-could he be the next Cliff Lee next year?

Where are Eric Milton and Victor Zambrano?

Lowe is a Boras client, but looking at the rest of the FA pitchers, he bested Dempster, Perez too erratic, Burnett although not a FA yet could be another Pavano, Sheets is injured, Garland with a WHIP 1.5-no thank you.

Was CC tired or overmatched or both. Buyer now beware on him.

If we can’t get CC reasonably my preference for 2 FA pitchers would now be a return of Mussina and Lowe, to go with Wang, Joba, and Hughes/Coke.

My guess is Abreu is offered arbitration, Marte’s option is declined[maybe offered a 2 year 7-8M option], Pettitte comes back[imo they should wait on him, no rush], Cano stays, and Matsui stays.

  158. gayle October 2nd, 2008 at 9:01 pm

    Pete,

Remember when fanboys and fangirls all over Yankees Universe adored Joe Torre just as uncritically as they do Joe Girardi now?

They worship until suddenly they don’t, and then they turn on their former idol.

That day you’ll get hundreds of posts criticizing you for not being harsh enough, for still mentioning Girardi’s strengths along with his weaknesses.

    Wait for it.

  161. Wang IS Taiwan October 2nd, 2008 at 11:42 pm

My concern with Girardi is whether his so-called positive spin is just a cover for his inability to truly see and then learn from his mistakes.

I’m particularly concerned about the fact that he seems oblivious to the fact that his 3rd base coach needs to be replaced. Even his own players were ignoring Mecham’s signs towards the end of the season.

Unfortunately for Giradi, he often comes off as delusional, rather than positive to those of us who happen to be realists in the world (unlike so many of the posters on this blog).

    Thank goodness for Pete.

  162. Jeremy October 3rd, 2008 at 12:53 pm

This must be the only Yankee blog whose commenters actually care about the relationship between Girardi and the media.

“Thank goodness for Pete”? Please. Stop brown-nosing and realize that all this harping about Girardi just degrades this blog.
