Surgery scheduled for Rivera on Tuesday

This release from the Yankees:
RHP Mariano Rivera will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder on Tuesday, October 7. The procedure will be performed by Dr. David Altchek at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.
——————
Mo is getting a calcification taken out that had grown above his AC joint. The growth had caused some inflammation. By having the procedure done now, he is expected to be ready for spring training. Altchek is the team physician of the Mets and earlier this year did the shoulder surgery on Jorge Posada.

“Altchek is the team physician of the Mets and earlier this year did the shoulder surgery on Jorge Posada.”
What?!?
I sense sabotage.
Still not liking the Mets surgeon touch Mo’s shoulder.
Altcheck did Andrew Bynum’s knee as well, so I hope he’s the best for both of my teams’ sake.
Hopefully Mo bounces back from the surgery fine. Anytime you hear shoulder surgery with a guy in his late 30’s its concerning hopefully his recovery is speedy and healthy.
Good luck MO!
Since this is Pete’s blog he obviously has the right to run it any way he chooses. But here’s what I don’t understand. It’s okay if Pete blogs something controversial or with which posters disagree, but it’s not okay for viewers to publicy disagree, to the extent that we have to email him instead?
I just find that a little weird.
Just sayin’
Good luck Mo!
“I sense sabotage.”
imagine if they both came back strong, but for some reason, could only throw backwards…
Is there a patron saint of arthroscopic surgery?
Why this talk about Bobby V back to the mets maybe? The contract situation not going good with Manuel?
Francesa is so overbearing. It’s a shame.
A man calls in to begin talking of Shea, and Francessa ignores him and gives his opinion instead.
My comment about “controversial” topics obviously has nothing to do with this. It was part of the previous blog and discussion, I believe, but I just checked in for the first time today and saw the new thread.
trisha,
That’s so old it’s got mold growing on it.
Pete just gets touchy when we criticize the media.
We’re on to talking about how we would improve the team. You know if we were GMs
“He’s 22, Holliday is 28 but a star…”
Fatman Nana nana nana nana Fatman
saucY,
What if they had to learn to throw with their other arm? What if Altchek transplanted their arms? Put Pedro’s arm on Mo. And LoDuca’s on Posada?
I know, stupid. But at least you got your new thread.

TK,
Didn’t read a the Post on line at all this week. Beltway area going scooters over the Redskins??? Hell of a win in Dallas. Can’t believe that’s the same Jim Zorn that looked like he didn’t know what the hell he was doing at Exit 16-W in Week 1.
Terps beat Clemson too. Big week down there.

No kidding? I actually saw the Infant of Prague years ago when I was studying a broad – I mean when I was overseas
Nice research – Thanks Tom

hahaha that made me burst out laughing in the office for some reason.
Friday afternoons will do that I guess.
Thank Vinny. Us post vatican two-ers really aren’t caught up with saints and what not. (and when I mean Caught up I don’t mean it in a nonchalant dismissive way. They just didn’t teach them).
I’ve never heard of the Infant of Prague. Did baby Jesus make a road trip to Czechoslovakia? Is the Infant per chance a budding major leaguer?
Fredo –
You know how it goes down here – they win one in a row and they are booking Superbowl tickets.
Coach Gibbs futility on top of Danny Snyder’s amateur-hour ownership (channeling his inner-Hank?) has made people here desperate for the ‘Skins to return to prominence. (I’m a G-Men fan so this has been fun)
The Terps have been a pleasant surprise too since losing to MTSU. It is a fun time of year down here.

5 Tool Player! (being a carpenter’s son and all)
ok, that is enough of that.
Altchek is the best shoulder guy in the business. Dr. Andrews is the “Tommy John” guy.
Altchek is the shoulder guy.
What’s interesting about medicals is how teams handle them.
Under the current CBA, players are entitled to get a second opinion and the teams will pay for that second opinion. However, if they choose to have a surgeon not of the teams choice, they are on the hook for the surgery AND the rehab.
Some teams are really strict on this. Sometimes, they relent and pay for the surgery but, not for the rehab.
Some teams just say, “You get the surgery by our guy or we won’t pay for a thing”.
The Yankees are one of the teams that gives the player great leeway in this area. They have no problems with the players choice of surgeon, especially someone with Altchek’s rep.
One of those things that help when you are pitching free agents.
TK:
Grew up down there, so I’ve always stayed something of a Skins fan. I was impressed.
My son’s at Boston College, so I’ll probably go see the Terps with him Thanksgiving Weekend. My kid had that one circled as a “W” but now isn’t so sure.
Obviously any shoulder surgery for any pitcher is alarming but I hope Mariano’s velocity doesn’t suffer at all because of the surgery.
Does anybody have any knowledge of such a procedure and the risks involved? I know it is only a ‘cleaning-up’ but no matter how you slice it, Mo is still undergoing surgery on a very precious pitching arm.
SJ,
Did Altchek also do Livingston’s knee? I see the Heat have picked him up. They must like what they see. They collect PGs like we collect OFs.
Fredo –
Yeah – I remembered you were from this area. Jason Campbell has had a light go on in his head the past few games. Zorn being a former QB is a big help to him. The ‘D’ has been very good too.
BC vs. Terps could be a good one. The Terps WR Heyward-Bay is going to be a big-time pro. Big and super-fast.
Tom: feel ya.
Its a minor surgery with a minimal amount of invasiveness.
If he had the surgery during the season, he’s probably out 6-8 weeks.
It shouldn’t affect his velocity because its not involving any muscle or tendons.
Its a MUCH less invasive procedure than the one Jorge had.
it is positive, to see some love for Rickey Henderson.
very underated player.

“am i the only Penn State fan here? i’m still amazed by the ranking they got this week. now the meat of the schedule starts….”
The Big 11? That is cupcake city! (j/k)
Mel,
I don’t believe he did. That was a NASTY knee injury. One of the worst you can have. Similar to being in a car accident and having your knee smash through the dashboard of your car.
That’s kind of a future move, mel. I don’t think he’s going to be ready to play for awhile and its worth taking a shot with him.
If he can get back to 80% of what he was, he should be Comeback Player of the Year. That’s how bad that injury was.
I’d love to see Paterno get one more undefeated season under his belt (whether they play for the title or not) and then call it quits.
if he does, no better season than this one!
The School I went to didn’t have football.
I think JoePa should be our 3B coach next season. I heard he’s a mean old SOB.
JoePa’s a freak! he kicks onside kicks during practices
Any surgery is delicate, dangerous stuff. Unless there is 100% certainty that Mo’s performance won’t be affected (and there can never be), then Yankee fans have the right to be holding their breath.
On another note, if anyone was listening to Francesca, I hope you were wearing ear plugs. He had on some god-awful comic pretending to be John Sterling (and some screech-owl woman, but horrible, pretending to be Suzyn). I wanted to tear my hair out – it was absolutely painful to listen to and so incredibly unfunny.
am i the only Penn State fan here? i’m still amazed by the ranking they got this week. now the meat of the schedule starts….
speaking of college football, am I the only Gators fan here? although I went for a year but I still know people there and still support the team.
Mets should bring back Bobby V
saucY,
I love that Big-10 commercial with all the coaches trying to be smooth with their recruiting pitches. And JoePa barks, “COME TO PENN STATE!”
Since we’re on football, anyone more obnoxious than a Notre Dame fan??? They haven’t won a damn thing sincw the Holtz Crime Family was running things and they had to cheat to do that…......yet they’re still convinved their excrement smells like roses.
If MO can’t close then why not make Hughes the closer?
I think Joba offers more in the rotatation
and lets not anoint Melancon or Sanchez as the closers. Lets not turn this into an Eddie Kunz situation like the Mets did. They need to prove something first.
Dave D,
You did read the latest, right? After talks with Manuel broke down (why did they ever start?), Bobby V. said he’d be open to talking with the Mets.
What about Ricky Henderson as bench coach? He is a guy who could provide some fire and get Cano to respond for him. He was a HOF player so the guys on the team will look up to him. He wil lbond with the players well and I think we need that—- the players don’t like Girardi because he is too tense. We need to equalizer who the players like and gravitate to—Ricky can be that guy.
Mets are trying to get Manual to sign a contract for under a million dollars for 2 years. As if that is adequate security. I don’t blame Manual for not signing it.
The guy was 15 games above .500 with a BP that blew 29 saves. He handled the media well and that is a HUGE obstacle in NY (they should look no further than Girardi) and the players played for him when they clearly didn’t for Willie.
Why would they want to screw with that? And the cheap Mets won’t pay Valentine for $4 million a year. Seattle will be after him too.
Yeah, that worked really well when Omar forced Ricky on Willie last year.
It helped in terms of Ricky organizing card games in the locker room and little else.
If you team up Cano with Ricky, you might as well kiss that kids career goodbye.
Great players don’t always make great coaches. One’s playing career has ZERO correlation of his ability to teach and lead.
“If you team up Cano with Ricky, you might as well kiss that kids career goodbye.”
As a baseball player maybe. As a card player??? Well that’s something else.
Fredo,
Are you a NY Giants fan?
Mel:
I am not.
That’s true Fredo. He would win back whatever his fines are in a season getting card tips from Ricky. lol
Fredo,
Just wondering. I’m following your debate with Brandon re: Cano and thinking out loud if you would trade away Plaxico (WTH kind of name is that?) Burress who’s been fined at least 40 times in his tenure with the Giants.
Mel:
To better answer that question, my favorite team is the Redskins.
Best of luck to Mo. And there are a couple of PSU fans on here. Its the closest thing we have to pro football in this part of the state. Jo Pa will go when he dies on the field (and I love the man)
Re: Plaxico
Interesting thought. The guy is such a talent, yet such an asswipe at the same time.
I thought they recently signed him to an extension. If that’s the case, the cap hit they’d absorb in trading him may make a trade prohibitive.
Raiders got a 4th round pick for Randy Moss and Plaxico is no Randy Moss. Think the Giants will have to ride him out.
Not saying that Cano is as big a star as Plax or as big of a problem as he is either.
In fact Cano would be an angel by comparison.
Huge game tonight for Scott Kazmir. It’s time for him to dominate. The key will be to keep the ball in the yard against the team that led the majors in home runs. I’m looking forward to watching the game. After that one, it’ll be time to break out my thundersticks and root for Santana. It could get ugly in my house if I have to break out my rally monkey.
ewww…
“In fact Cano would be an angel by comparison.”
Absolutely. I don’t think anyone views Cano as a bad guy. Just the opopsite in fact.
“The key will be to keep the ball in the yard against the team that led the majors in home runs.”
Kazmir has had the longball baugaboo lately. 8 bombs over his last 14 innings.

ND fans are not anywhere as bad as Red Sox/New England sports fans.
“Kazmir has had the longball baugaboo lately. 8 bombs over his last 14 innings.”
The Rays need Kazmir to start dominating like he’s capable of. If he gets hammered like he’s been lately, it would have to shake his confidence. If he dominates, the Rays really have to feel good about going deep into the postseason. They need Kazmir. Shields and Sonnanstine are capable starters, but may not be enough to take the Rays to the Promised Land. Kazmir has the potential to be something special and lead the way.

“ND fans are not anywhere as bad as Red Sox/New England sports fans.”
Difficult to imagine, but maybe you have more insight there than I. I do know this, you don’t hear a damn thing from Boston fans when they aren’t winning. In the case of Notre Dame people, they never shut their pie holes. Only fan base I know where fans are smug even when their team stinks.
ND fans have been humbled in recent years. I think the sense of entitlement is gone.
If they want to compete they’re going to have to relax their admissions standards.
Just finished listening to Girardi’s interview with Mike. I don’t see why anyone has a real problem with him. He never hesitates with his answers. He doesn’t dance around anything. He’s quick and sharp. His only crime is that he’s not Joe Torre and he wears rose-colored glasses.
*and the injury thing. Which he acknowledged and vowed to improve on.
Justin Tuck’s from ND so all is good.
I grew up in Mass. as a Celtics fan. How could you not love the way Havliceck and Russell played the game? But the Yankees have always been my first love. I attended a lot of great Celtic games in Boston Garden right on through the Larry Bird ear. I attended quite a few games in Fenway as well, always rooting for the opponent.
But New England fans changed around 2003. They suddenly felt like the Red Sox could compete with the Yankees so the world was theirs. After 2004 they became dowright insufferable. Now, I will more than likely never set foot in Fenway again, never mind the new Garden or whatever they are calling it this year.
But there’s hope. I know a transplanted New Englander/die hard Boston sports fan that lives in San Diego. Months ago he paid $240 for tickets to the upcoming Chargers/Pats game. There are a lot of New Englanders living in Souther Cali and they all wanted tickets, which drove the price up.Now, with Brady out of action those $240 tickets are going for $90 with the brokers.
The moral of the story is that with a couple of seasons where the Sox go back to being the Sox and dont make the playoffs, all those bandwagon jumpers that call themselves a “Nation” will either move on to next hot team or simply shut up entirely.
Please, no more mentions of the Infant of Prague lest Brandon be wistfully reminded of our Departed Infant of Trenton.
Drive 4-5,
Wishful thinking on the Sox. Although only 2 AL East teams could make the playoffs.
Too bad for you that basketball, football, and baseball aren’t in the same season. At least it would be quiet for half the year.
As a Celtics fan, you must be happy that the season starts at the end of the month.
Try again. Although, only 2 AL teams at the most can make the playoffs in any given year. So if things go the way they’re supposed to, Boston would be on the outside looking in.
mel,
The saddest thing is that I actually rooted AGAINST the Celtics this year. The New England fans are that bad. I want to never be associated with them again.
Off Topic, but, has anyone here seen the movie The Brave? It stars Depp and Brando and was directed by Depp. Its adapted from a novel by the same name.
Drive 4-5,
What a coincidence. I did, too!
Nick in SF
so jose tabata is the patron saint of 5 tool prospects
In the Larry Bird era, there was a waiting list for Celtic’s season tickets. By 2007, the Celtics were running specials to get people to come.
It’s no coincidence that the only 2 seasons the Red Sox road attendance was higher than the Yankees were the years after they won a World Series.
The biggest illusion in sports is this notion of “Red Sox Nation”. Yes, they come out in droves when they win.
But no, they will never set attendance records 5- 7 years out from their last Series championship the way Yankee fans have done the last 4 consecutive years.
I can see Ace, Lowe’s, and Home Depot falling over each other to endorse the patron saint of 5 tools.
5 tools? What does the Red Sox infield have to do with this?
Nick,
Depending on who’s pitching, they sometimes use 6 tools.
How many 5 tool players are currently playing? I would guess less than a dozen. Am I off on that.
I know that someone will probably go for this and I know that it is the agents job to pump up his clients value but saw this little tidbit on si.com and it really turned me the wrong way. I know that he had a great year this year and has been really good for a few years but doeshe really deserve “Mariano money” as a BASELINE?? Also not sure I would sign him to a 5 year deal that is a lot of money and a lot of years to spend on a closer who is NOT Mariano Rivera.
Record-breaking Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez is seeking at least $75 million over five years, agent Paul Kinzer said Wednesday. K-Rod wants “at least” five years at “Mariano money,” according to Kinzer, who called that price the “baseline” to get into the ballgame for the All-Star closer who set the single-season saves record this season. Kinzer made clear, however, that his client was hoping for even more. The agent declined to name a top target price.
pat,
Who would be on your list. I don’t know much about tools of the trade, so I’d be interested.
Also since we spent some time today discussing the business of sports thought I would pass along this link for those interested

Relaxing admissions standards won’t happen, though. That they have the winning tradition they do when basically they have student athletes instead of athletes that go to school is amazing. They don’t get the best of the athletes, but, for years they worked around the situation. If they don’t toe the line, they don’t stay long. They’re not above kicking star players out of school. Father Theodore Hesburgh ran a tight ship as the head of the school for years and Father John Jenkins is doing the same thing. Bob Davie and Tyrone Willingham did so much damage to ND football, it set them back 10 years. They did as much damage as Gerry Faust did. Weis is trying to dig them out.

Who gets the Mets draft pick if they were to sign K-Rod, Abreu, and CC? Does it go by worst record? Does anyone know?
Mel, the five tools are:
1. RUNNING SPEED
2. ARM STRENGTH
3. HITTING FOR AVERAGE
4. HITTING FOR POWER
5. FIELDING
Mel
As I said I am sure that someone will pay but will the Mets who are known as not wanting to spend a ton of money really want to spend that kind of money on top of what they are already paying in terms of contract plus they have to pay Wagner for the entire year. And will they be happy with paying that kind of money to K-Rod in year 3 or really even year 2 of that contract.
the “power 100” is an interesting list.
not that i agree with it. how did Lebron get such a high ranking?
Hey all,
raymagnetic, I believe it’s the team the player previously played for so the angels, yankees, and brewers respectively.
saucy—
Go back to the other link (the second one I posted) that has all the articels with the issue and also goes onto explain the reasoning and how the list came together.
With ZLebron it comes down to one thing Marketability
raymagnetic
I believe that what happens if a team signs more than one
type A FA is that the best pick goes to the team giving up the best player according to the Elias rankings.
Tom,
For an English teacher, your reading comprehension’s a little weak. j/k. Who are the true 5-tool players in the game?
gayle,
Do the Mets have a choice? Their collapse is at the feet of the bullpen. Wagner’s a sunk cost, but they don’t have anyone to even audition for the role. On the flip side, what other teams even need a closer? Maybe Tampa, but they wouldn’t spend that kind of money. The Angels need…wait. Huh?
Ray—
Think this answers your question
If a Type A free agent is offered salary arbitration by his former team, but declines arbitration and signs with another team, the signing club must compensate the former club a first round draft pick in the upcoming season’s amateur draft. However, picks 1-15 may not be awarded as compensation – in the event the signing club owns a pick from 1-15, that team forfeits its second round pick rather than its first round pick. Additionally, if the signing club signs more than one Type A Free agent, that signing team also must compensate the other Type A free agent’s previous club its second round pick, and a third round pick for a third signed Type A free agent, etc. The determination of which former team gets the higher compensation pick is based on the signing players’ Elias rankings – the player with the highest ranking yields the highest pick to the that player’s former team. In addition to this compensation, a “sandwich pick” is created between the first and second round (the “sandwich round”) to further compensate the former club for the loss of a Type A player. Picks awarded as compensation for the loos of a Type A player may not be later forfeited.
Sorry Mel.

I grew up in Michigan, about 10 miles from Notre Dame, but, I loved watching Celtic basketball with Havliceck, Russell, the Jones boys, and back to Cousy. I enjoyed basketball back then, but, can’t stand it now. It rank at the bottom with football. Television carried the Celts games mostly, because it was the Yanks. Loved watching, Chamberlain, Bob Petitt, West, Baylor and Lucas, and then later Maravich, Murphey, Chet walker and Rick Mount until he turned pro and dropped out of sight. Then came Larry Bird and his flock. When he retired and when the BS showboating and hanging off the rims, thumping their chests did it. Have never had any use for the Reggie Jacksons, Terrell Owens, Byrants, Rodmans and the rest of the sports jerks ruined the sports for me. Give me the classy, stylish players like Payton and Sayers any time.
Oh I pray because of that bad start in Philly teams shy away from CC, I’ll still take him on my team Joe Boffoono !

a while back, wasn’t Vlad a 5-tool player?
Thanks guys. It’d be interesting to see where the Yankees would fall in line if that scenario did take place. It also maes me think that the Yankees will only try to sign 1 type A guy. I can’t see them forfeiting so many of their draft picks signing multiple type A players.
GB7,
We stopped watching basketball at the same time. I have no stomach for the NBA at all, and I used to love it.
Josh Hamilton’s one, too, right?
And then the Knicks want to tell me Mardy Collins who you can’t find on a milk carton came to camp in great shape and is throwing down dunks REALLY, can pass the ball w/ precision, can he hit a rim w/ a jumper, that kid is a scrub the Jason Collins of point guards high IQ no talent.
thanks for the Type-A/Draft info Gayle! that clears things up.

“It also maes me think that the Yankees will only try to sign 1 type A guy. I can’t see them forfeiting so many of their draft picks signing multiple type A players.”
they’ll also be getting a few picks from players departing, so it may be a wash in the end…

Is this the same “sandwich round” the Yanks will get picks in for not being able to sign their first 2 draft picks this year?

JR YANKEES-
As one who has been on the wrong end of scalpel & scope 13 times, including both open & scopes on both shoulders, here’s my take on Mo.
The MRIs don’t necessarily reveal ALL that is wrong with the shoulder.
When they get in there with the scope they will probably remove the calcification, & IF that was the only thing causing the inflammation & irritation then it’ll be a piece of cake & Mo should be 100% velocity & mobility in no time and an easy rehab.
BUT, I would imagine since they are in there already, they would remove & reinsert the scope in several spots to examine the whole joint just in case.
If everything else looks good, & no labrum or rotator cuff tears then all is well. If not, & they have to sew &/or open up the whole joint & do more extensive repairs then it becomes much more problematical to come back from, especially with Mo’s age & wear & tear. Longer period of limited motion to allow healing, longer rehab for ROM & Strengthening. NO guarantee of full velocity in that case IMO.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed.

I think the Upton Brother’s are considered as 5 tool players. Adam (not pac-man) Jones also.

Cano for Carmona?
The Yanks aren’t going to get that many extra draft picks, because they aren’t likely to offer arbitration to that many. Abreu is the only sure bet. I think they need to offer arbitration to Pettitte and Mussina, too, or, the run the risk of getting nothing if they sign somewhere else, like they got nothing for Clemens, when he said he was retiring and ended up in Houston.
Josh Hamilton is a 5 tooler. I posted the first 3 that came into my mind.

Stop it. The Lakers will never trade him. Besides, where would be play? He’s too big to play catcher.
We’d better pick well in the ‘sandwich’ round, because Girardi has already told Cashman that he won’t play anyone picked in the ‘ice cream and candy’ round.

Alright, Nick. Looks like this party’s winding down. Have a great day.
Go Angels.
MEL
I have tons of time, but absolutely NO IDEA what you are talking about!
Mel –
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five-tool_player
———-
do that really answer your question? for the home runs wise, Bonds only averages from 35 homers per year before his steriods era. so a player hitting 25+ homers per year, I think that does consider a 5 tool player. HOFer Duke Snider averages 40 homers per year. wow!
not to speak for mel, but I think she was asking if you wanted to start a blog about the Arizona Fall League, where Hughes and others are playing. mel’s doing the hawaiian league.
correction:
Duke Snider averages 40 homers in 5 straight years.
5-tool thresholds
power: 25-30ish
ave: 310
SB: 25-30ish
i’m not sure what a good measurement for fielding and arm would be.
is my criteria too tough? i do think the term is thrown around too often…
Tuscon Ken,
If you click on ‘mel’, you’ll find that I started a blog to give updates on the baby Yankees playing Hawaii Winter Baseball.
Someone asked if I was doing Hughes & Jackson in Arizona Fall League.
I was hoping that someone else would do that. Maybe someone in Arizona?
Current 5 Tool players in baseball
Pedroia
A-Rod
Beltran
Vlad (prime)
Sheffield (prime)
Hamilton
Granderson
Hanley Ramirez
Matt Kemp
Soriano
Pujols
Victorino
Justin Upton
What? You mean Gardner isin’t a 5 tool? Where is Austin Jackson on your list?
Justin Upton? Really? A Career .242 hitter with 15 HR this year? I don’t think so. Matt Kemp is closer, but still low on the power. While they may develop into 5 tool players, those two are not currently there yet.
Current 5 Tool players in baseball
Pedroia – needs more power
Beltran – avg too low
Vlad (prime) – how is prime current?
Sheffield (prime) – how is prime current?
Hamilton – not fast enough
Granderson – avg too low
Soriano – avg too low, not sure how he’s handling the outfield
Pujols – no speed
Current 5 Tool players in baseball
Pedroia
LOL
Haha,
OC’s a JA, but Kazmir should worry about himself.
Kazmir just doesn’t seem to be the pitcher he was earlier this year.
Bases loaded first inning for White Sox with no outs.
Cashman needs to get this 5 tool player for 2009:
http://tinyurl.com/5-tool-player
john: your 5-tool player list is way off.
much too generous.
Kazmir, another playoff bust.
Rays are lucky the rest of their rotation is pretty much lights out.
Grady Sizemore?
Hanley Ramerez?
Soriano was never a 5 tool player.
Defense = 1 tool
it is not major surgery from what i understand and mo is going to be mo in spring training.an absolutely effortless delivery.
really, the only 3 pitchers to get into a jam in the post-season are Dempster, CC, and Kazmir. What do they have in common? Not attacking the hitters. And, no, the plunk by Kazmir doesn’t count.
MEL
That league is up north in Phoenix & gets zero coverage down here in Tucson. I’m sure PETE A. will keep us posted. If not, I guess I could search periodically but other than posting here have know idea how, nor desire, to start a blog. I’m old, computer illiterate, & thrilled to be able to post here without causing the internet to shut down!
1-0 white sox
Just plain stupid…plunk a guy and he ends up scoring on you.
There’s actually an AL team that’s slower than us. 2 base hits where the guy didn’t score from second.
I missed the first two at-bats, was it really a deliberate plunking as Chris Rock says? Isn’t it better to plunk someone with 2 outs and none on if you’re going to do it in the first inning of a playoff game?
Madden has Ball Four warming up already
Tuscon,
Fair enough.
Burhlee is a big game pitcher—- 2 runs will be enough for him.
That looked like a pool shot.
Nick,
With Orlando Cabrera jawing and gesturing at the Rays pitcher last game I would bet the plunking of Cabrera was deliberate.
The Chi Sox are definition of station to station team, if there ever was one.
Betcha the Rays get at least 5 runs tonight.
Pretty good job by Kazmir. He limited the damage.
Nick,
Nah. Just a low pitch that swept inside. Brushed OC back and grazed the uni on his right shin (batting right).
Borderline where you wouldn’t think anything of it if nothing happened yesterday.
Did you see the highlight of OC kicking dirt towards Balfour on the mound? It was definitely a challenge.
If that was a Yankee pitcher, they would’ve been tossed. The double standard for us is just disgusting.
Good job by Kazmir, all things considered. 3 hits, a plunking, and a walk and got out of it with 2 runs and only 37 pitches
Ahhhhhh, I forgot about the beef with Cabrera.
Oh, yeah. It was deliberate. Very nice job of toeing the line. Too bad it cost him. Aw, shucks.
if this haven’t been mentioned before, permit me to receive a pass…
why didn’t NYY sign Alexei Ramirez (the cuban missile), when he was a free-agent last september?
wouldn’t dissapoint me, if orlando cabrera gets plunked.
not a player in the MLB, i dislike more.
edit: Didn’t see when O Cabrera was hit. Nevermind.
rivera had his elbow reconstructed years ago.he will be fine.
vinny-b: I think its b/c he was a 26 (claimed age) year old cuban player who many thought would need a year or so in the minors.
He played winter ball while negotiating with mlb teams and look awful. 1-20 or somthing like that. That turned teams off because he looked overmatched vs top talent.
Tom: thank you, for the info.
trisha – I am delusional, juvenile, and thoughtless…

“Rays are lucky the rest of their rotation is pretty much lights out.”
While the rest of the Rays rotation is respectable I don’t think many people would call them lights out. They don’t have a 15 game winner and the lowest ERA is 3.56
Shields 14-8 3.56
Sonnastine 13-9 4.38
Garza 11-9 3.70
Jackson 14-11 4.42
If all these guys are lights out then there are a lot of lights out pitchers in baseball.
i love how all these radio people like francesa have all the answers on how to fix a team.they know about as much as an ordinary fan.
francesa is advocating trading wright and or reyes.
on guy on the fan said the met’s need to sign sabathia,k-rod and tex, that is 55 million bucks a year right there.
i heard another guy say the yankees need sabathia, burnett, texiera and a center fielder wich is about 70 million a year.
i am not saying any are bad ideas but there are millions of scenarios that can be made to sound good but few would work.
teams are trying to sign younger, cheaper players that are under control for a long time.
i would be worried about sabathia, burnett and any other 29 year old or older player that want’s 15-23 million dollars a year.that is not the way to go.
sabathia for 3 yrs 63 million, yes but for 5-7 years i wouldn’t sign him for anything.
if you are going to pay that much money it has to be for a player 26 yrs old or younger.
that is why i would trade cano and any other prospect for a pitcher like billingsley.those type of pitchers are impossible to find unless you draft them yourself.
the yankees with billingsley minus cano are much better instantly.
my biggest fear came true last night.billingsley would pitch a gem and his stock rose substantially.a pitcher like that is priceless and the yankees need at all costs aquire pitchers like that by drafting and trading.
if we can land one or two of them through a trade and groom a few we will compete for years.i have a gut feeling hughes is going to be real good.he is learning other pitches, knows what he needs to do and is very smart.with joba the talent is there but i hope he stays healthy.
the yankees have to figure out how to get pitchers that are about to take off but won’t cost too much at first.
now i have to find another pitcher for the yankees to go after because billingsley isn’t going anywhere.
FYI, Sports Illustrated has a really good article on Madden this week.
bru, I applaud you for learning to use the Shift key so well!
doh, not the Shift key, the Enter key. As in, multiple paragraphs.
So how many RBI and homeruns will Jas*n B*y have tonight ?
Nick –
Let me congratulate you on your pick last night in the contest near the Mississippi river –
My jaded DC expectations were bowled over – you betcha made the right pick, heck joe six-pack agreed!
ER,
Bay will hit a walkoff HR tonight
FYI, Sports Illustrated has a really good article on Madden this week. – - – - – - – - – - – - – - –
Is that John Madden, Bill Madden, or Joe [Maddon] ? ?

ER,
“Bay will hit a walkoff HR tonight”
I would love any HR from Bay tonight but since they are playing at the Angels it won’t be a walkoff HR.
“ND fans have been humbled in recent years. I think the sense of entitlement is gone.
If they want to compete they’re going to have to relax their admissions standards.”
They did do that under Holtz. Criminals and illiterates were cool. A mini scandal broke out and they’ve steered clear of that since. Steered clear of being a title contender as well though.
What’s considered “for average†and “for power
.300 & 25 HR?———————————————————————————This year in MLB, 34 players hit .300 or better.
This year in MLB, 50 players hit 25 HRs or better.
A 25 man roster x 30 teams = 750 players
So a .300 hitter is top 5%. 25 HRs is top 7%
I think that a fair description.
Also consider: 25 HRs x 20 years = 500 HRs. Not bad.
This year in MLB, 13 players hit .310 or better.
This year in MLB, 28 players hit 30 HRs or better.
So a .310 hitter is top 2%. 30 HRs is top 4%
Beltran’s career, he is: .281/29
So your numbers may not be a ‘star’, but pretty damn good.
Saucy’s numbers are ‘star’.
Of course, a GM should be more concerned with OBP/SLG, as opposed to BA/HRs.
Ray (Boston fan) :
I have some inside information about the Yankees.
Fredo –
Find me the ‘pure’ Nat’l Champ, without ‘Criminals and illiterates’. It doesn’t happen. Sadly.
An SEC coach once said that you ‘Can’t win a championship without a couple of boys you wouldn’t ask over for dinner’. You can’t point to a team – college or pro (with the sole exception of Vanderbilt) that doesn’t have this problem
(that was sarcasm)
Rays up 3-2
“Ray (Boston fan) :

Spill it!
Thanks, TK. I just took the points and then we got an outright win!
If our side doesn’t prevail, maybe the the said contestant can get a sponsorship from the Red Hook Brewery. “Ya Sure Ya Betcha!” Joe Six-Pack should approve.
Nick –
In the spirit of ridiculously uncanny coincidences, I owned 500 shares of Red Hook Brewery from 3 to 6 – and then back to 4.5.
I blame the landed gentry – call it force of habit!
The moneyline on that St. Louis bet would have been a serious payout – for entertainment purposes only, of course.

__
BS. Name the offenses they commited and who they were. Then, start ringing up the “criminals and illiterates” from the NE schools. When was the last time you saw rioting in the streets of South Bend because they won a game? How many other fan bases has rioted, burned and turned over cars because of a game? We won’t even discuss out of hand police actions.
Maddon brings in Balfour to face Cabrera LOL
that guy huh? speaks for me, if you follow my meaning
committed
The Balfour yelling is more annoying than the K-Rod point. I’m rooting for the Rays and I wanted to see Cabrera hit a come-backer at him.
anyone who doesn’t like the name Rocco?
Rays win! 2-0 series lead.
I hope Rays will sweep, because the Red S*x will.
a 7 game Rays/Redsox series may be interesting, if not entertaining.
Mr. Balfour suddenly got quiet.
I think the Angels come back tonight. They are too go of a team to go down like that. They had too many uncharacteristic and overachieving mistakes in that game. They can come back from that.
Kelli in Conn.

“I have some inside information about the Yankees.”
Ok Kelli, you sent this message once before. Are you telling me I shouldn’t be on this blog since I am a Sox fan or am I missing something?
huh?: I own zero shares of Red Hook, but I think I’ve had more than a hundred Red Hooks in my time. I might have taken a Red Hook Brewery tour in Seattle years ago but I can’t quite remember. I think that means it was a good tour!
no more cowbell
SA –
I agree. the cowbells are really annoying.
“Ok Kelli, you sent this message once before. Are you telling me I shouldn’t be on this blog since I am a Sox fan or am I missing something?”
Now that I am myself again – I would like to thank Nick’s liver for its support, to thank ray for his patronage, and to extend Hank and Hal’s wallet to Carsten Charles Sabbathia.
CC, despite your disastrous, awful, historically bad performance in the post-season, the Yankees extend a charitable helping hand – just scratch out that Santana name on the contract and ink in yours and we’ll all be happy.
LOL I’m half expecting a cow to walk across the field
Kelli and TK>>>>>one and the same? Say it ain’t so! lol
oh nick – while you’re at it, recommend 3 Yo La Tenga songs for me to illegally download at no cost.
“BS. Name the offenses they commited and who they were.”
They dropped the standards. Criminals and illiterates is hyperbole to a degree and perhaps a bit unfair. But Holtz asked for and was granted lesser standards for admission. No denying that. The scandal, small as it may be and the subsequent probation was real. Recall Kim Dunbar? Lou Holtz has left a trail of crap most everywhere he’d been before ND and everywhere he’s been since. ND admin knew that when he was hired, but for a time were okay with getting in bed with the devil and compromising some ideals for the sake of having a title football team. Doesn’t make them different from the zillion of other schools who do the same thing. To their credit, they are different insomuch as they stopped.
In the end, Notre Dame hasn’t won a title with true student athletes since Dan Devine.
SA –
my friend lives in florida, and he said those bells were for free. lol hahas.
I read today that there is cowbell etiquette at the Trop. They are not supposed to shake them until the Rays pitcher has 2 strikes. That may be the best reason I’ve ever heard for teams not taking a strike.
They were for free? Oh lord lol
ray –
no, no, a thousand times no.
I’d rather see my own blood a-spilling.
>
JP Howell has sick off speed stuff with movement
Great atmosphere in Tampa tonight
Where was THAT pitch?
My friends want me to root for the WS, but I’m rooting for TB because I think they can stop BOS (since clearly LAA has no plans to).
Same here Laura,
Nothing against the Chi Sox but the Rays matchup better with Boston. With LA too actually.
I do admit, it would be kind of nice to see both Chicago teams down 0-2 after they proclaimed themselves the baseball capital of the world this summer and felt it was their year for an All Chicago showdown.
I think the few Rays fans that exist will be more unbearable than even RS fans if the Rays get anywhere this playoffs. The fans with their cowbells and bandwagoners. The stupid mohawks. Maddon.
They have been decent this year in terms of play, but more of their wins were due to luck.
“They have been decent this year in terms of play, but more of their wins were due to luck.”
No, their luck was that we were too injured and inconsistent to give them a run for their money. They got good pitching and good defense. Their success is not a fluke.
Chicago is gonna be one sad city
Who was the Rays Front office guy who thought cowbells were a good idea—Bruce Dickinson?
http://www.funnyhub.com/videos/pages/snl-more-cowbell.html
Look at that idiot Johnny Gomes
TK, you have truly been paying close attention, as YLT is my favorite! Well, one of my favorites. If you’d like me to just send you some YLT songs by email, you should contact me through my… hey, I don’t have a blog! Um, through this photo site:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/92472245@N00/sets/72157603451651434/
YLT has a loooooooooooot of songs, but here are 3 good ones to start with:
1. Tom Courtenay
2. From a Motel 6
3. The Summer
“Look at that idiot Johnny Gomes”
I hate that guy.
“Chicago is gonna be one sad city”
It already is. The Cubs fans were mega depressed today.
So Tampa vs. Los Angeles of Anaheim is what we’re hoping for now.
Maybe Hank was right and they need to reconfigure the playoff system.
How did this White Sox team get in?
Now, the pressure shifts to Danks and Floyd.
“How did this White Sox team get in?”
Because CLE and DET did not live up to their billing. The WS should have finished in 3rd place. But CLE was injured and DET…I have no idea what was wrong with that team. They have to be the biggest disappointment from this season.
Watch Baltimore put a team together next year too. This division is going to be hell in 09.
The hardest part for the Rays will be winning that clinching game in Chicago, facing their 2 best pitchers, Danks and Floyd.
Did anyone else get stuck trying to leave NYC tonight. 3 hours to get home and I am fuming!!
Rocco for CF next season? Big upside if he can be healthy. Thats a big if though!
IPK and Robertson for Jeremy Hermedia?
