"No, they don’t try to score less even though it appears that way sometimes. But I do think they make more of an effort to score when guys like Igawa and Ponson were on the mound. The proof’s in the pudding."

If it doesn't work one way, how in the world can it work the other way?

Some pitchers keep the players more in the game. I think Mussina working faster helped keep the defense working. One of the improvements he made this year was pitching quicker, less time between each pitch.

When a player is trying harder to score runs they press. They go out of their normal game plan and do lousy. Certain pitchers get better run support because of the opposition they face more than any effort to score more runs to help them out.

Its not like they would score more runs if Rasner faced Halliday or Burnett. Right?

Matchups don't do much for me. The only one who really rearranged to get us into a jam was Toronto.

Gator used to joke with Wang, "How many (runs) you need today?" So you never know what the players are thinking when certain guys go.

Some of the additional run support for the lesser pitchers was because of the lesser pitching they faced. Teams try to arrange their rotation somewhat to fit with their opposition. Lining up your number 5 against their number 1 or 2 is going to be tough. It still happens at times due to the schedules, but batters don't normally go in to any game figuring they can score LESS because of who is on the mound for them.

Mac Nut,

If what you say is true, then Girardi can’t be the manager of this team. He’s too high-strung, too young, and has too much energy bouncing on the balls of his feet."

Maybe he wasn't the right choice for this team, maybe it was inexperience and trying to force things rather than work with them. I certainly was not happy with Girardi being made manager. That doesn't mean he can't learn his way through.

Heck, he learned, finally, to stop playing with the lineup all the time. The clubhouse seemed to be better toward the later part of the season, which shows that adjustments were made.

Next season will tell a lot more about Girardi and his learning curve. As well as the team's learning curve in adjusting to it as well.

"Bowa also probably makes Wang go station to station and he won’t get injured in Houston. "

If only Oswald was allergic to binding glue and sneezed.

Laura - The Cubs suck!
October 5th, 2008 at 2:07 am
“They’re not pressing because Girardi makes them uptight. That’s stupid-ridiculous to say.”

So now, my friends are stupid and ridiculous? Nice.

I happen to think that the hitters were pressing because they had no faith in the pitching and felt that they had to do everything themselves. But that’s just me
____________________________________________________

Laura, I think that you are half-right. The hitters knew that they had to score more runs than they were and most went out of their zone to hit pitches that they couldn't hit or shouldn't swing at. They pressed. That made pitchers more tight than they should be because the offense wasn't scoring and they were so consciense of making a mistake that that's exactly what happened. It was a vicious cycle.

Cano, and to a lesser extent, Rodriguez, were really bothered by this. Cano wouldn't hit, so, he took those issues into the field, his consentration was split and he failed to make the plays. He took the defense to the plate and would swing at pitches that he could barely touch. A vicious cycle.

"I don’t get it either. Where is this anti-Torre sentiment coming from?"

Yeah, it would be nice if fans could just appreciate the great run the Yankes just had and think about the guy in a positive light rather than bash the heck out of him. 12 consecutive postseason births is pretty awesome.
