A-Rod: Ace recruiter for the Yankees

October
5

photo03.jpgNow that the season is over for CC Sabathia, Alex Rodriguez is doing his part to get the big lefty to sign with the Yankees.

In an attempt to show CC how great it is to be fabulously wealthy, Alex dined at a sidewalk cafe in the Village and casually wiped his face with a $100 bill.

It is not known whether A-Rod then flung the soiled bill to the ground and said, “Let’s see Jeter do that.” But one would assume he did.

It is expected once Sabathia learns that being a Yankee means you can use $100s as a napkin, he will sign immediately.

————

On a serious note, perhaps you noticed John Danks win two huge games for the White Sox in the last week. This would be the same John Danks who lost 13 games and had a 5.50 ERA for the White Sox last season when he was 22. The lesson is you have to be patient with young starters.

Sure, Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy had poor seasons for the Yankees. But there was a reason they were first-round picks (just like Danks) and you have to give them time. If the playoffs can serve as a blueprint, that is what the Yankees should take from it.

By all means, go get Sabathia or Derek Lowe or A.J. Burnett. But don’t give up on Hughes or Kennedy. Give it a year and they they could be pitching in a big game in October.

in all seriousness, it looks like A-Rod paying his check? lol

  2. Quilvio Imposter

Kennedy? He has no future with us. He is trade bait

  3. steve

he has cherry chapstick in his hand too lol

  4. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Staying to write the story

Kennedy and Hughes have different ceilings, but the point is certainly still valid, especially for Hughes.

You don’t give up on guys after one year. Or two.

  5. Tseng

Yeah I doubt he’s wiping his face or anything, probably just trying to say something without the photogs seeing what he’s saying by covering up his mouth. Or he’s trying to pay and had to scratch his face without a free hand.

  6. john

Tex is practicing tonight for when he is a Yankee.

    0-2 so far with RISP

  7. Weather Man

Hughes is a legit prospect, Kennedy is not. It’s funny how people lump them together as if they have the same ceiling and should both get the same opportunities.

  8. harwood

Pete laying down the law. Everyone leave the kids alone.

  9. Tom

    is this TMZ?

  10. Patrick Bateman

Was Danks on the DL for 2 years?

Also did Danks say he pitched well after giving up 9 hits and 5 runs in 2 innings?

A-Rod can use those 100’s as toilet paper as long as he performs.

  11. Thomo

I agree- you need to be patient with Joba, Hughes and Kennedy. I think they all have the potential to be big league pitchers, with an upside in that order. I hope both Moose and Andy retire for different reasons and that Wang comes back completely healthy. If you can get CC or Burnett as a free agent, fine. I am not to keen on Lowe.

Nice to see ChiSox come back today and try and make it interesting. Hope that LA can do the same this evening.

  12. GreenBeret7

PA was just having a little fun, but, of course, the target of the cheap laugh was his favorite bullseye.

I believe more in Hughes than in Kennedy…but we should be patient and give the kids a chance.

I wonder how much money Alex has in his other hand? :P

You don’t know whether he’s a legitimate talent or not. I can give you a long list of pitchers that disappointed everyone for the first 2-3 years. Pitchers with no more and in some cases less talent than Kennedy.

  16. pat

Or he was trying to cover his mouth so the paparazzi getting a picture of him couldn’t see him saying, “NY sports writers who care about my personal life need to get a life of their own.”

PS- I’ve had the pleasure of dining at Bar Pitti and they don’t take credit cards.

Mussina said the same thing early this year when he struck out the first 3 batters of the game and never got out of the second inning because of errors, infield rollers and broken bat bloops.

    Ian Ken ?

Pete, I don’t think anyone needs to give up on that kid, he’s long gone, beyond help.

  19. E-Man

Let Hughes and Kennedy develop in the minors. I don’t want to watch bad baseball 2 out of every 5 games again next season.

  20. holdstrong

I get a kick out of this.

For every story about a kid who started off horribly and then came around to be serviceable… there are 10 stories of kids who started off horribly and then remained horrible.

Danks is not a reason to have blind faith in Hughes or Kennedy.

If we have legit reason to believe that either of these two guys can turn it around, then fine… that is one thing. But “See, Danks did it!” and “They were high picks!” don’t cut it for me.

  21. pat

Cashman said neither Hughes nor Kennedy are guaranteed spots in the rotation. As long as he builds the 2009 rotation keeping that in mind, patience is a virtue we can all afford to have.

    ian kennedy….really….i mean really…
if i had that kind of money id be doing alot more than just wiping my face with it….

Angles stink!! They all watch a ball drop in 3 players, oh look a ball lets let it drop.

  24. Tom

    Ah the Bermuda triangle….

  25. pat

One of those 3 Angels needs to be slapped.

  26. ray (sox fan)

    thank you Angels!

  27. jennifer

Why can’t we beat that loser of a team? Someone please explain how that team turns into the bad news bears when they face the soxs?

  28. Joe from Long Island

I thought the Angels were supposed to be a good team.

  29. Bombshell

Haha where’s Laura, I told her the Angels always find new and interesting ways to lose to the Sux. Every single freaking year. That was pathetic defense, all three of them deserve to get booted from this game.

  30. Trevor

They say the Angels are a “fundamental team” that do everything right. Not when they play the Red Sox. Seems like they do everything right against the Yankees though.

  31. longtime

How bad are these Angels , I bet Sciosa doesn’t get any flack for the way they have played against the Sux. If this was the Yanks he would have been run out of town. This team can only beat the Yanks.

  32. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and enough with the crying for Torre

    Worthless Angels

  33. Weather Man

Looks like Big game Beckett will pick up another postseason win

  34. Bad Scooter

The Angels are seriously choking. How can a team play the whole regular season playing great defense, throwing to the right base, hitting the cutoff guy, etc then play like this come October? Unreal.

  35. Patrick Bateman

“Mussina said the same thing early this year when he struck out the first 3 batters of the game and never got out of the second inning because of errors, infield rollers and broken bat bloops.”

And I would have traded Mussina for Johan Santana too.

  36. Laura - The Cubs suck!

“Haha where’s Laura, I told her the Angels always find new and interesting ways to lose to the Sux. Every single freaking year. That was pathetic defense, all three of them deserve to get booted from this game.”

I’m here. Just got home. Didn’t see the Angels error, but I can imagine how ridiculous it was. The Angels are Boston’s ….. (fill in the word).

And that’s all the reason to bring back Mussina and Pettitte one more time. You’ll almost always get 6-7 innings from them. Add that to a FA like Sabathia or Burnett, along with Wang, and there is no rush to bring them in and give them a job. You’ll have Chamberlain and one of four among Coke, Aceves, Hughes or Kennedy to start off the season. Aceves could pull the Ramiro Mendoza role of long man and spot starter, as could Coke who could also be a situational lefty capable of getting 4 or 5 outs if necessary.

Hughes could use April to refine a few things and Kennedy would have possibly a half to full year to fix his issues. Chamberlain and Hughes are still going to have inning restrictions, and to a lesser degree, so will Pettitte and Mussina. They could skip a turn about every 5 turns and Hughes and the others could pick up the slack. Sort of a modified 6 man rotation.

Pete must be trolling the celebrity pages. That photo of A-Rod has been on People magazine’s site for a few days now. Was Pete watching 2 different pitchers than the rest of us? I understand waiting on Hughes he has shown flashes of dominance and the ability to deliver in the postseason. However Kennedy should not be part of the Yankee organization next season. His attitude along with his lack of major league stuff should be enough reason to ditch Alfred E Neuman.

  51. Laura - The Cubs suck!

The more interesting thing about that photo is look at Alex’s left hand. There appear to be many other 100s in that stack. It doesn’t appear that the recent stock market crisis is affecting Alex’s cash flow. :P

Yeah, I’m not a fan of crumbs. I have to wipe everything down. Even if I’m in a restaurant and I make a mess, I clean it up.

Alex should have used some of those $100 bills to wipe down the table.
    :D

  63. Brad

I need to see more of Derek Lowe in the postseason before deciding whether or not he’s a fit as a Yankee.
The Kennedy we’ve seen is as good as he’ll ever get.
Hughes is still a work in progress.

  64. E-Rod

Ok, CC has spoken. He isin’t going to go city to city.

That means Hank, Hal, Cashman, Girardi, Jeter, A-Rod, Posada, Damon, Pettitte (if he comes back) all need to fly out to San Francisco and lure him. We’re the Yankees, we should blow away any team in a recruiting effort.

Encourage him to come East so we can give him the Westchester/Bergan County tour as well.

  65. AJay

Does the money in Alex’s left hand equal how many runners he left in scoring position this year?

    _____________________________________________________

Diva-like, perhaps, but sabathia’s got more friends than he knew existed as of today. It reminds me of every time a Latin player came up on the FA list, Boston fans said they were going to Boston because they were friends with Pedro Martinez. One year, 900 players were friends of Pedro’s and headed for Boston.

  69. Doreen

No crumbs on the black sweater, though.

The left hand looks strange, look at the fingers. Like they’re going through something solid.

    Eh.

So glad the Angels tied the game. Until now I wasn’t sure they wanted to win at all.

  70. mel

2 things bother me about Lowe. Isn’t he, like, old? And can he pitch in the AL east now?

  71. LLIME

Aside from the hand they throw from, I have a hard time seeing the difference between Kennedy and Igawa.

Didn’t Igawa also make comments that he pitched well after that Detroit game? Maybe thats where Kennedy got it from! Igawa and him exchanged media secrets in Scranton.

  72. Laura - The Cubs suck!

“Who gets married first? Alex or Jeter?

  74. GreenBeret7

Good evening, Ray. Hope most everything is going well for you. Can only hope it gets depressing for you in the baseball sense starting today. Hope the family is well and stocked up on tissues.

LOL. Maybe Alex was having lunch with Criss Angel.

  76. Doreen

    mel -

I think I read Lowe was 36, which is the same age as Pettitte, right?

And I thought he wasn’t quite as good in the AL East as he is right now in the NL West.

I guess until these moves actually happen, though, every name is going to be floated. But if the Yankees do sign CC, I don’t think Lowe would be on their shopping list.

  77. Tom

Lowe is a 3-4 starter in the AL east. 12-16 wins 4.00-4.50
    He would pitch 200 innings.

  78. LLIME

Jeter will never get married. He will take over for Hugh Hefner when he retires from baseball.

  79. Drive 4-5

    mel,

A 3rd thing that bothersome about Lowe is he is a big time partier. One of the reasons the Red Sox soured on him was his off field habits. If he couldnt control himself in a small town like Boston, can you imagine how he’d be behave in New York City?

  80. Ed - looking forward to 2009 [supporting the Pineapple Express]

just for the record, Lowe’s first full season in the rotation is just a fluke. The tough team in the AL east he had to deal with was just the Yanks back in 2002.

Okay I have a question. How does one learn that a player is a big time partier? I’m seriously curious. And couldn’t Mantle, et al., be considered to have been partiers? Yet they were able to produce. (Or were they just heavy drinkers, and that’s okay?) Like David Wells and David Cone if we had any luck at all. Both FULLY apreciated all that NY had to offer and still found their way to the mound every 5 days.

  88. murphydog

    1) Imagine having front pocket change and it’s all 100s. I had a dream like that once.

    2) Can’t speak for all rich folk, but carrying a flash roll seems a little gauche. Unless he was on his way to a pick up poker game. I recall A-Rod had an issue a while back… Interestingly, I note that some genuinely rich people that I’ve worked for/with don’t carry much, if any, cash around.

    3) I’m fairly sure Bar Pitti takes plastic – you know, like the Black AmEx Centurion card A-Rod no doubt has. (But I’m even sure they would agree to bill Mr. Rodriguez if he had neither cash nor his AmEx Centurion Card – he being a member of the rich superstar class).

    4) Seriously, you don’t expect to see A-Rod scratching a Metro Card against the grain of his beard, do ya? Dude was taking a cab and that ain’t cheap in NYC.

    5) Is it just me or, if you squint a little, isn’t A-Rod starting to look like Alfred E. Neuman?

  93. Al from BK

If I was the Yanks I’d pull out all the stops. Full NYC tour, broadway shows, tour of new stadium and also a tour of local real estate where he can raise his family. Bring him up to Bergen county or Westchester let some professional agents show him around. Then ultimately I would have A-Rod, Derek, Posada and a slew of Yanks legends, Reggie, Yogi all sit down and have a talk with him. Whatever it takes the Yanks need to go full throttle for CC.

  94. Ed - looking forward to 2009 [supporting the Pineapple Express]

Posada is known as the “Punisher”. Those who slacks off and isn’t giving the team all his efforts shall be punished by Posada. Remember Posada went off on the team after the Boston game when the Yanks were 1 hit?

  95. Laura - The Cubs suck!

The leaves haven’t changed yet, after all!

  101. Drive 4-5

I hope thats the last time we ever see Derek Lowe in the same sentence as Wells and Cone. Lowe’s won more than 14 games only 3 times in 11 years. He turns 36 in June and his combined record the last 2 years is 26 -25. Let’s hope the Yankees dont start signing 36 year old pitchers to anything more than 1 year deals.

  102. Wilson

If Cashman doesn’t put on a full court press to get CC, he should be dismissed.

The only thing that should stop CC from coming here is CC himself. If he is amenable to coming here— give him whatever he wants. Money has no boundaries when you are dealing with an ace like CC.

There is no way we can screw this up, this could change the franchise. Please Cashman, toss away your conservative ways for one FA signing. There is no way you can rationalize not getting him if he wants to come here.

Ray, no question that this year’s Boston rotation has more problems than last year. Not sure about you, but, I wasn’t even counting on Schilling to do anything this year. I didn’t think that Lester was going to explode into a full-time second ace, though.

Matsuzaka is difficult to figure out. Last year, he pitched great, but, the record didn’t show how good he was, but, this year, regardless of the reord and ERA, he wasn’t nearly as good….just luckier than last.

I also thought that Beckett would back up his season, considering how they all talked about how he had pitching figured out.

Wakefield, you can usually pencil i his numbers from the year before, but, injuries got him this year.

The bullpen was a hit and miss, much like the Yankee pens from 2003-2007.

  105. ray (sox fan)

Laura, no way Varitek gets Posada money.

I’m guessing Sox offer him a 2 year contract but at lower money.

  106. Laura - The Cubs suck!

“There is no way you can rationalize not getting him if he wants to come here.”

I think that Cashman is going to make a serious effort to get CC, but they are not going to throw A-Rod money at him. Nor should they. He’s a pitcher, who has been worked like a dog this year. An injury could be right around the corner.

  107. Laura - The Cubs suck!

“I’m guessing Sox offer him a 2 year contract but at lower money.”

Do you think he takes it? There are a few teams out there that need catchers. The Mutts supposedly want to change catchers. I don’t see Varitek going there, but you never know.

Nope. Mimes do it for me. They totally creep me out.

As for Jeter getting married, Yahoo Sports had a picture of the Cap’n and Minka Kelly at the closing ceremony at the last Yankee Stadium home game. To me, that’s about equal to Jeter getting engaged. He doesn’t usually have the current squeeze with him in a baseball context – usually he keeps the two worlds separate. Thus, IMO, this one is serious. (And she happens to be awful cute).

Ex-Yankee (briefly) Brinkman RIP. I miss the pre-PED days when there was a place for guys like this in the majors:

CHICAGO (AP) — Eddie Brinkman, a
    record-setting shortstop during a 15-year career
in the majors and a former high school teammate
of Pete Rose, has died. He was 66.
Brinkman died Tuesday in his hometown of
Cincinnati. The Chicago White Sox, for whom he
was a longtime coach and scout, held a moment of
silence for him before their AL Central
tiebreaker against Minnesota. The team did not
    give a cause of death.
Brinkman made his big league debut at 19 in
1961 with the Washington Senators and played in
an era when shortstops were known for their
gloves, rather than their bats. The only two
times he hit over .240 came when Hall of Famer
Ted Williams personally worked with him.
“Steady Eddie” was traded to Detroit after the
1970 season in a deal that included Denny McLain.
    Brinkman solidified his reputation as
“good-field, no-hit” more than ever in 1972, the
year he won his lone Gold Glove.
Brinkman batted just .203 with six home runs
and 49 RBIs for the AL East champion Tigers, but
set the league record for shortstops with 72
straight errorless games — a mark Cal Ripken
    broke in 1990.
    Brinkman’s glovework in 1972 earned him a
ninth-place finish in the AL MVP voting. No
Detroit player did better in the balloting that
    championship year — Mickey Lolich, a 22-game
winner, came in 10th and Al Kaline, who hit .313,
    was 24th.
Brinkman was an AL All-Star in 1973. The next
year, he set career highs with 14 home runs and
    54 RBIs.
Batting eighth for most of his career,
Brinkman hit .224 with 60 home runs and 461 RBIs.
He spent most of his days with Washington and
Detroit, and split his last year with St. Louis,
Texas and the New York Yankees in 1975.
His best year with the bat came in 1969, when
he hit .266. That was Williams’ first year as
manager of the Senators, and the great slugger
    made Brinkman his pet project.
Brinkman’s brother, Chuck, was a backup
catcher in the majors from 1969-74.

Santana got an extension of 6 years/$138 million that will be in effect from the 09 season on. That is $23 million a year. He is making $13 mil this year from his previous contract.

So it is not outlandish for CC to ask for $25 million a year at all, 2 million more than Santana. Especially when Santana was negotiating exclusively with NYM and still got $23 million.

I just read the post, above, about Eddie Brinkman passing.

I remember Eddie Brinkman as a great shortstop when I was growing up in the 60-early 70’s. He was the definition of good field-no hit. I remember when Ted Williams took him under his wing, made him choke up a lot on the bat, and made him more than an automatic out.

Cashman has said numerous times he wants to stay away from long term contracts for pitchers and develop his own. Aside from Hank, there has been no noise about us getting CC.

Cashman will go after him, I don’t think there’s any question, but if you read between the lines in his recent interviews, he isin’t going to go ‘all out’ to get him. Unfortunately for him a robust farm rarely results in big club success. He thinks that names like Hughes, IPK(lol), Melancon will cover up the stink of Pavano, Igawa and Hawkins.

This is where Hank needs to get involved somehow… we cannot lose out on CC under any circumstances if he wants to come here.

Cashman will find a way to screw this up somehow. He would rather have Derek Lowe and PEDitte back.

  209. Tom

“Cashman did tell fans to temper their expectations about the FA market, that obviously pertains to CC”

That’s Cashman playing the CYA game. Heading into the season Cashman didn’t do that with Hughes and Kennedy. He just doesn’t want to explain himself to angry Yankee fans.

  210. GreenBeret7

Ed, I don’t think PA is too happy with me. Maybe I’ll just call Uncle George and mention it to him. I just hope he remembers it when he’s watching cartoons.

    “Al,

I’m not sure if its Cashman as much it is that idiot Hal. There was an article from Newsday earlier in the week saying Hal told him he could only afford Pettitte or Santana, not both, thats why the Santana trade didn’t get made.

If thats true, it looks like Cashman now has to adhere to a budget. I think this is why Hank was even put in charge– to keep his brother on his toes if he tries to get too conservative. Lets hope Hank has enough influence this off-season.”

Yeah, because the Steinbrenners are hurting for money. Gee whiz. I really hope this isn’t true. Hal should take some notes from his Dad and realize that putting a winning product on the field is what makes the Yankees so much money. If several seasons of mediocrity are something the Yankees can afford then by all means “build from within”.

Yeah, he’s one of 3 or 4 really good utility players I’d like to see for NYY. Keppinger, Maicer Izturis, Alex Cora or Amezaga from Florida. Ideally, though not likely, I’d prefer Mark DeRosa…this era’s version of Randy Velarde.

  223. Trevor

  225. E-Rod

We take our best offensive player out of the lineup and score 44 points. We lose Osi, Strahan, Wilson, Mitchell, and Torbor from the defense and are as fierce as ever… not showing up in the stat sheet as much, but we are dominating.

The depth on this team is just insane.

  228. Doreen

I just wish people would remember that as the Free Agent, Sabathia has the final say in where he goes. He may be willing to listen to NYY, and he may be willing to play in NYC, but it doesn’t mean NY is his first choice; it doesn’t take away from the possibility that there are other considerations besides money. I will continue to think that when the numbers of dollars are as ridiculously high as they are these days for these players, what difference does it make if the offer is 120 mil or 140 mil? Both numbers pretty much set your family tree up for generations. So it comes down to other things. As Yankees fans we have to hope that the “other things” that the Yankees can offer are more enticing than the “other things” that other teams have to offer. NYY can no longer offer a yearly trip to the post-season/WS.

They won’t sign a blank check but they should. The Yankees haven’t needed an FA this bad since maybe Tino or Mussina. The Yankees really didn’t NEED Giambi, they didn’t NEED A-Rod, they didn’t NEED Kevin Brown. They NEED CC its not a want or desire he is the only front-line starter on the market and will not see a starter of his quality available until after 2010! That’s an interesting perspective. Hadn’t thought of it like that – need versus want. This would be stocking the shelves, which is thrifty and we assume the baseball gods would sanction such a move. :)

  249. Tank

I have no problem if CC goes elsewhere– infact, I’m kind of expecting him to.

But we need to be the highest bidder for him. Force him to walk away from the money. Don’t just make a token 6 yr/$120 mil dollar offer just for show. Make your best effort to sign him.

  250. Patrick Bateman

    I agree with Al.

They can’t screw around with Sabathia. The reason why this team hasn’t been a contender in 8 years is because of no front end starter who can dominate a short series. Sabathia can do that, as shown by throwing 4 games in a row on 3 days rest. Wang tried to do it once and failed.

Letting Sabathia go would probably set this team back a good 5 years. If we don’t get Sabathia, I think this season will be the tip of the iceberg of agony for Yankee fans. The nucleus of position players will have aged too much and we’ll have to start at square one.

  251. mel

    Doreen,

You’ve got a point. That’s why a Zito size contract is scary. Not that CC will all of a sudden forget how to pitch, but he won’t repeat this season’s work for the next 7 years.

2006 – lose an awful series to Detroit. not a person in America thought we’d lose that series

2007 – No division title. Aside from Hughes’ 3 innings, we played an awful series. Pitching, hitting, Joba and the bugs.

    2008 – 3rd place, no playoffs.

  278. Al from BK

I think that Cashman’s way of thinking is flawed. Of course a great farm system is something that can breed big league success. However teams that really plan on going deep into October supplement a great farm system with occasional free agent signings. Doing only one of those things will not bring success. Look at the playoff teams this year. The Sox even though I hate them have a great farm system that produces quality arms and decent position players IE Lester, Pedroia, Lowrie, however they also know when to get the big fish. 2 years ago they grossly overpaid for Dice-K’s posting fee to insure that they would land “the guy”, they also did the same for JD Drew who has been decent. The Angels have a great farm system however they still picked up Torii Hunter and Jon Garland both of whom have done a fine job. The key to success is mixing home-grown talent with acquired talent. This is one of those times where you have to get the “big fish” in order to insure future success.

  279. vinny-b

  288. Doreen

Do people know what contending means?

I don’t understand how getting to the playoffs every year from, what 1995? qualifies for not being in contention . Even this year, one could (but would be foolish to) make the argument that they were in “contention” until the last week of September.

If you mean they haven’t made serious in-roads once they got to the playoffs, you really can’t say that until 2005. 2004 was a disaster, but at least they were in the NLCS – contending for the League championship.

    Here ray:

Whom would you rather have? CC Sabathia for six years and $150 million? Or Jake Peavy for four years and $63 million?

The Padres, coming off a 63-99 season, will at least explore a Peavy trade, general manager Kevin Towers confirmed to Newsday. ESPN’s Buster Olney first reported that possibility this past week.

The Yankees are among the teams with prospects that interest the Padres, although it’s not clear whether Peavy would waive his no-trade clause to come to the Bronx.

“Coming off 99 losses, we’re going to a little bit of a younger core club,” Towers said Friday in a telephone interview. “I guess it’s worth at least exploring to see what he would bring back.”

Towers said he hasn’t yet initiated trade discussions.

Rather, much as Cleveland’s Mark Shapiro did when preparing to deal Sabathia, Towers is targeting teams with young talent that interests him; it’s hard to see the Mets having enough. The price figures to be immense, although the Padres’ financial health is unclear because of the divorce proceedings of owner John Moores.

    Peavy, 27, will make $11 million in 2009, $15 million in 2010, $16 million in 2011 and $17 million in 2012. He has a $22-million team option for 2013 with a $4-million buyout.

Cash cant be stupid here with CC.

He needs to be the initiator here. None of this, let the other teams make their offers and roll out the red carpet for him.

This is the kind of guy you build a rotation around. I dont think its a big deal either that he has pitched around 580 innings over the last 2 years. He is a guy like Wells, with a rubber arm.

  315. Al from BK

Can anyone beat the Sux in the playoffs. It seems like the past 4 years every team(except for the 05 W/sox) has seemed to just lay down and die for the Sux.

  316. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Staying to write the story

mel: Indeed, my algebra tests from that year illustrate this principle quite well.

  317. Doreen

So how’s this game going to end? Walk-off? Or extras and then a walk-off?

  318. hank hal

    Who hits the walkoff?

    I say Varitek

  319. Patrick Bateman

“Do people know what contending means?”

When you’ve got a 200M payroll and unlimited resources and get thrown out in the first round, you aren’t a contender.

  320. ray (sox fan)

Do the Angels leave Shields in or bring in K-Rod already?

  321. rconn23

Man, the Angels have blown so many opportunities. Lester was excellent in Game 1, but Matsuzaka was lousy and so was Beckett and they still can’t capitalize.

  322. Doreen

That’s just not true. Money does not guarantee a WS. People play the game, not greenbacks.

Possibly Wells or Pettitte circa 1998 were the last time we had a dominant lefty in YS(im not bringing up randy johnson).

  324. GreenBeret7

Maybe Hank can offer a few of his horses (four legged types) to help sweeten the pot, add some money and young players in separate deals and tie Gonzales to the deal for Peavy.

  325. Patrick Bateman

“Cash cant be stupid here with CC.

Cashman shouldn’t be the initiator. The players have to reach out to CC. Make him feel welcome and wanted and tell him that even though there is no candy in the clubhouse that they have a private stash somewhere.

  326. harwood

wow Hunter caught that ball. almost as if hes a baseball player. good for him.

I don’t agree with you. When you have the most money in the league, you can buy everything from free agents to farm hands. The problem with our team is that our GM picks the wrong players both on the major league and minor league level. He’s a poor talent evaluator.

  334. t-rock

  338. Buddy Biancalana

    Steve Trout would not have.

  339. Doreen

    Patrick -

You can buy whatever you want – you can get all the best players on one team, okay. But you can’t make them hit or run or pitch or catch or throw to perfection. You can hope that they will, and the probability is that they will; but the possibility always exists that they won’t for whatever reason.

I would suggest that the Yankees have spent the money and HAVE gotten to the playoffs. So the team they put together has been able to win the games to get to the playoffs. in some of the seasons they have even overcome injuries (Matsui, Sheffield, for example) and poor starts to get to the playoffs. Who would expect that a team that can win 97 games could all of a sudden lose all their talent and ability?

Look at the Angels here. They won 100 games this season. They are supposedly a fundamentally sound team. Arte Moreno went out and got Teixeira. And they are looking like a bunch of duds here.

It’s not a video game. It’s not fantasy baseball. It’s human beings.

  340. Nick in SF

So, um, anyone watching the Angels game?

  341. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Staying to write the story

Would have loved it if the Angels showed this kindd of fight in Game 1 or Game 2…

  342. yanksfanmc

    Man I cant stand Papelbon

  343. trisha - Dynasty designator

I didn’t watch the last game. This game has been more background noise than anything.

  344. t-rock

Angels did show fight in game 2, rallying from 4 runs down.

    But K-Rod ended those dreams.

  345. Nick in SF

I caught a snippet of this game on the radio on the way home from the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in Golden Gate Park. ESPN analyst Dan Campbell said that K-Rod is “not nearly the same pitcher when he comes into a tie game.” Must be another statistical anomoly!

  346. Brandon (THE METS BULLPEN IS GANSTA !)..."Keep Manny away !"

I just realized Figgins is a FA after this yr.

  347. Doreen

    Patrick -

Then your argument is really that they’ve not spent their money well. That’s a different argument.

I disagaree, as I’ve written above, since I think they teams they assembled have been able to get where they needed to be – in the playoffs. I do not understand why people who can perform over the course of 162 games all of a sudden aren’t able to play well in the post season.

With this exception: The pitching. Has not been there since 2003. And no one they’ve brought in has been able to do what was needed. Except Wang, and he wasn’t a free agent, and he’s not costing them any money. So it’s not the money.

  348. Wilson

Is he really? I would LOVE to sign Figgins to play CF

  349. mel

Haha. Craig Sager just said, “Little Dustin Pedroia.” Naughty man.

  355. trisha - Dynasty designator

Doreen, I am almost baseballed out already. Maybe because I’ve watched a lot more postseason baseball than I ever did when the Yanks were in it, these games are almost boring to me at this point. The Angels have done a nice job tonight. I hope they win. If they don’t, eh. I have confidence in the Rays and the Phillies to do what the Angels couldn’t.

If Torii Hunter caught that fly ball way earlier, I’d be asleep (maybe) by now, though.

  454. Jeff

Is ESPN allowed to basically give play by play of the the games in progress on their bottom scroll? When someone grounds out there is a “score alert” sighting.

Doesn’t TBS prohibit that? I mean they can update scores but play by play? I remember Mike and the Mad Dog got in trouble for doing that during a Yankees day playoff games a few years ago.

  474. Bombshell

Still I have zero trust in the rest of the Angels ‘pen so can we have another run please.

  475. Redding

  477. Nick in SF

The Angels didn’t really patent going from first to third.

  478. rconn23

Come on Tex. Three run blast.

  479. tom

That’s why Tex is overrated. He has an oppurtunity to blow the game open and he failed. Do we really need more players like him on the team, for $22 million?

    Spend the money elsewhere.

  480. george

  481. trisha - Dynasty designator

Anyway, please GO ANGELS and wrap this up. I AM TIRED!!!

  482. Clint

Jeff Weaver trying to protect a 1 run lead against the heart of the order in Fenway?

    Good luck

  483. Nick in SF

Yeah, that’s why Tex is overrated. Good point.

  484. Bombshell

Gotta be kidding me, leadoff walk trying to close it out. Come on please don’t be stupid.

  485. rconn23

God, that was predictable. The Weaver curse.

  486. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Staying to write the story

Oy. Angels, can you please get three outs before giving up a run? I’ve got to go to sleep!!

  487. rconn23

This is torture. I hate the Weavers.

  488. Doreen

Just missed? These guys are reminding me of John Sterling. They get hyper-excited over every fly ball hit by a Red Sox guy. Not even warning track that one was.

  489. Brandon (THE METS BULLPEN IS GANSTA !)..."Keep Manny away !"

This is torture. I hate the Weavers.

This is so true, I’m waiting for him to hang one like his brother.

  490. trisha - Dynasty designator

I pointed out, and the post got lost in the ether, that I would have preferred Weaver to walk F’Ortiz than give him something to swing on with a 3-2 count due to his record against him.

It’s looking pretty good at this point, but one never knows…

  491. rconn23

    Perfect pitch.

  492. Doreen

    G’nite everyone!

  493. Brandon (THE METS BULLPEN IS GANSTA !)..."Keep Manny away !"

    pesky little rat.

  494. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Staying to write the story

And the Angels live to see another day!

  495. Ed - looking foward to 2009

    OMG…the Angels won!!

  496. Bombshell

There we go, see ya later tonight Sux.

  497. Nick in SF

That was slick! Hope is still alive in the Free World!

  498. trisha - Dynasty designator

    YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Angels broke their postseason Sux curse. Perhaps now things will turn around completely.

Sweet dreams everyone. You too Ray, ha ha ha.

And one Weaver boy atoned for the other. GOOD ON YA JERED.

  499. ray (sox fan)

Well maybe it is appropriate that it went 12 innings. That is the first time the Angels have beat the Sox in 12 postseason games.

    They were due. Lester tomorrow!

  500. ray (sox fan)

    Good night Trisha….

  501. trisha - Dynasty designator

Awwww, disappointment in the eyes of the five-hour fenway crowd, as they file out with the thought of fighting each other in the parking lot lines.

    Life is good.

    :D

  502. Clint

    Angels have no bullpen tomorrow

    Arredondo – 2 innings
    Shields – 2.1 innings
    K-Rod – 33 pitches

    Can Lackey throw 8 strong?

  503. Ed - looking foward to 2009

who goes for the Angels tomorrow?

  504. Ed - looking foward to 2009

    oh Lackey..

  505. Nick in SF

Hey wait a second! I thought Beckett was the best post-season pitcher of all time and didn’t ever give up runs or anything. How can this be?

  506. hank hal

    Chip Carey was awful

  507. trisha - Dynasty designator

Oh John? Someone is asking you to defend your earlier position about Beckett being the best potseason pitcher and the 4-0 score and whatever else you predicted?

I leave you to do that.

    Night!

  508. george

Boston has to be worried, losing Beckett’s game. these 5-game series change momentum so quickly.

  509. Alfred E. Kennedy

trisha- Maybe he followed your advice and went to SOSH and is there agonizing with the rest of the Sox fans as we speak lol

  510. Al from BK

    Angels winning tonight.

  511. bru

This question is probably extremely un-PC, but does anyone ever remember seeing Jeter with a woman who was black? And don’t say Mariah because she doesn’t count. He seems to prefer white or almost white women

    gabriel union.

CC doesn’t deserve A-Rod money, but I’d do 7 yrs/$175 mil ($25 mil/year). We don’t have to go higher than that because no team will approximate those numbers.

you are out of you’re mind.

you wan’t to pay him more than santanna?

he is not as good and 7 yrs is too much.

less yrs more per year,he can’t have both.

    5 yrs/125 million or 7 yrs/140 million.

  513. trisha - Dynasty designator

Alfred E., something makes me think that John’s plane is always circling here…

    :)

See you for the next exciting installment!

    GO ANGELS!

  514. Hitman

Are we really going to compare John Danks to phil hughes and Ian Kennedy?

  515. Fan mail from some flounder

When is Pete going to get over his obsession with A-rod’s money?

  516. No

I’d like to punch A-Rod in the face with a $100 set of brass knuckles.
