Hughes off to a good start in Arizona

Peter Abraham
October
7

Phil Hughes had a pretty good outing today in Arizona: 5 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, 5 walks, 7 strikeouts. He threw 86 pitches, 49 strikes.

The five walks are a little surprise. But Hughes hadn’t started a game since Sept. 24 in Toronto. Plus he could have have been working on something.

The game is still going on. But Austin Jackson has two RBI for Peoria, which has a 6-2 lead. You can follow the game here

    93 degress Peoria…a cold front!

  2. steve

do they play at this time everyday?

  3. Clare

    steve,

no, there are 3 games a day. Today, two were at 12:30 and one at 7 – not sure if the split changes. But the AFL website says they moved the early game time up to make it easier for scouts to see both the early and late games.

Now Francessa is taking politics with Kim.

    Must be a slow day.

I was wrong in the last thread of the 7 strikeouts. One was called, 1 was foul-tipped, 1 was in the zone, 1 was a swinging strike-blocked, 2 were just below the zone, and 1 was just above the zone. Subject to idiosynchrocies of Gameday. :)

    6-2 GO/AO

Matt Wieters got nothing off Hughes, but drew a walk and hit a triple after Phil left the game.

  6. saucY

is Kim Jones going to be a regular on that show?

  7. E-Rod

Nah, Mike said he will have a rotating panel.

Kim will be there tomorrow, then Beningo on Thursday or Friday

  8. MooseCall

Yanks need Mussina back. Mussina is BETTER than Beckett(2006-08):

    Wins/Losses Winning % ERA
    Beckett 48/28 .632 4.11
    Mussina 46/26 .639 3.91

“Now Francessa is taking politics with Kim.”

Is he giving the over/under on Bam Vs Mac tonite?

“is Kim Jones going to be a regular on that show?”

I can’t see how she can be, at least once the regular season starts again. TV pays more than radio, so unless she gets fired from YES, she’s unlikely to move to WFAN permanently.

However, she’s very good on the radio, as is Carlin. Both would vastly improve Mike’s slot. Mike is really boring by himself. WFAN has really got to find someone better to take over permanently.

    MooseCall,

Be prepared for a bounceback year. Becky alternates like Alex. :)

He’ll probably starting focusing on pitching for a contract soon.

The numbness in the hand seems to be a problem, though.

  12. mel

Jackson just tripled on a soft fly ball to CF. What did it do, get caught in a divet?

  13. RalphieD

A-Jax with the 2 rbi triple…2 for 4 with a trip and 4 rbis for his first game in the AFL..not too shabby

  14. Nick in SF in Vacaville

from two threads ago, TK gamely points out:

” “Steamed crabs with Old Bay and Berger cookies are more palatable than whatever folks eat in D.C. Um, pork?”

It is the Capital my left-coast friend – we get a little piece of everything made in the entire country.”

The seat of government does not make D.C. the *culinary* capital. You think all those Representatives from Iowa and Minnesota and Oklahoma and Rhode Island and Oregon and.. well, you get the idea… um, you think they all demand their own regional cuisine? Hmmm, maybe so.

But I’d take New York as the culinary capital. Yum.

  15. Sea Net

Jackson with a 2 out, 2 run triple.

    Now had 4 RBIs today

  16. mel

Jackson thinking, “Heck, I can get along with Joe G.” :)

  17. Devil's Advocate

    Jackson trying to dethrone Gardner

Though I wouldn’t make too much of AFL stats, Eric Duncan won MVP of this league 2 years ago.

  18. AJ YANKS

Kim looks very good today, as usual.

  19. mel

    Devil’s Advocate,

If they can both hit ML pitching, you’ll see them in the outfield together.

“Nah, Mike said he will have a rotating panel.”

Future panelists: Mile Lupica, Larry Kudlow, Henry Kissinger, Tony Blair, Mort Sahl, Keith Jackson, Sir Ben Kingsley, Lorn Brown, Charro, Jose Canseco, some dude he just met on the srtreet, Irv Cross, A Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader (she’ll sit in for 2 days), Don Meredith, Tony Kornheiser, Tony Curtist, Lesley Visser, Leslie Nielson, Snoop Dog, Eamonn Dunphy, Verne Lundquist, Marv Albert, Steve Albert, Kenny Albert, Al Albert & Fat Albert.

the yankees must keep ajax.he will move up quickly.

If you watched the gamecast of the game Hughes was really being squeezed if it was accurate. Nothing at the knees was being called a strike. Sure he has to adjust but looked like a lot of those pitches should have been strikes.

  24. Betsy

I’m not surprised at the walks – he hadn’t pitched in awhile and throwing on the side is not the same. I’m sure he was working on his breaking stuff, to boot, but regardless of the gun readings, Phil’s stuff was obviously good. I’m very encouraged – good start.

  25. JJ

    Was he throwing 100????

  26. coops2001

If Hughes joins Joba as a reliable pitcher, I’ll take that 2 out of 3 arrangement. We should shop IPK and see if anyone bites. His attitude has me worried. Nice to see Ajax doing well. Good comment on Becket, he does seem to go from mediocre year to good year and back again, so by that, he, Dice-K, and Lester should be tough to deal with next year. Any word on Schilling? Is he officially done?

  27. CJ

The AFL is an extremely good hitters league-While I would discount what Jackson/Russo, if Hughes/Whelan/Marquez do good its really saying something.
