This release from the good folks at the Hall of Fame:

History is being written this week in baseball’s postseason, but several historic artifacts from the 2008 Major League Baseball season are already on display at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown.

The items, which are displayed in the Museum’s Today’s Game exhibit and join dozens of other 2008 artifacts in the Museum’s collection, include:

* Derek Jeter’s spikes when he set the record for most hits at Yankee Stadium, and Jeter’s bat from the final homestand at Yankee Stadium.

* The spikes used by Jose Molina when he hit the last home run at Yankee Stadium, a bat used by the Yankees’ Johnny Damon when he homered during the final game and a ticket from the final game.

* Manny Ramirez’s batting helmet from when he hit his 500th home run.

* Game balls from Francisco Rodriguez’s 57th and 58th saves and the Angels’ jersey Rodriguez wore when he recorded his record-setting 58th save of the season.

* The jersey worn by John Smoltz when the Braves ace recorded his 3,000th career strikeout.

* Ichiro Suzuki’s batting helmet from when the Mariners star recorded his 200th hit of the season, tying the all-time record.

* A stars-and-stripes logo cap worn by the Pirates’ Nate McLouth in honor of the Sept. 11 remembrance

The Today’s Game exhibit is available for viewing with the purchase of a regular admission ticket to the Museum.

More 2008 artifacts have just arrived at the Museum and will soon be put on display. Those items include the Giants’ jersey Tim Lincecum wore in his final start this year; the cap worn by the Yankees’ Mike Mussina during his 20th win of the season; a cap worn by the Yankees’ Joba Chamberlain; a cap and shirt worn by umpire Brian Gorman during the final game at Shea Stadium (Gorman’s father, Tom Gorman, umpired the first game at Shea Stadium); and the bats used by Marlins infielders Jorge Cantu, Mike Jacobs, Hanley Ramirez and Dan Uggla to hit home runs following the 25th homer of the season by each player, marking the first time each member of an infield has totaled 25 homers in one season.

Artifacts from the 2008 postseason are on the way, and those will be displayed about two weeks after the new World Series winner is crowned.

If you’ve never been to the Hall, you owe it to yourself to go. Cooperstown is a great little town and the Hall itself is fantastic. I like going in the dead of winter when the crowds are smaller and you can take your time and walk around and read everything.

I think Pete has more new threads today than he has had this entire month combined.

  2. Alfred E. Kennedy October 8th, 2008 at 2:55 pm

This Mike’d up show is MUCH better than yesterday. Mike realized he can’t talk Yankees hot stove for an hour with them.

    new coaching staff

    manager – girardi (for now)

    bench coach – don baylor

    3b coach – bowa

    1b coach – pena

    hitting coach – tino

give all of them roles and all of them need to be connected to the players and have a voice.

if girardi refuses, get rid of him and name pena the manager and get paul o’neil to be the 1B coach.

  4. Laura October 8th, 2008 at 3:00 pm

    “3b coach – bowa”

Okay, I think we need to let the fantasy go of Bowa coming back. I just don’t see it happening.

  5. Dave D October 8th, 2008 at 3:03 pm

Why not make Kevin long the 3B coach?

  6. Tom October 8th, 2008 at 3:18 pm

The only coach who has a contract– right now– is Long right?

I have never been to the Hall, but plan on going and I heard it is great, how many times have you been there Pete?? That is a good tip to go in winter, as long as its not a snowstorm. I really cant wait to go, btw have you ever been to Yogis museaum?? I would like to go there also since i live so close, maybe we can have a blog trip out there?? I hope you do another trip to Scranton or maybe Trenton, i didn’t get to go this past season but would love to go.

  10. Patrick October 8th, 2008 at 3:26 pm

    Nick,

That was your funniest post of the season!

Giambi’s thong definitely needs to go in the HoF

I may be sory for asking but….why Wilson Betemit?

  12. saucY October 8th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

i wonder what the HOF crowd is like on black friday. i’ll be halfway to cooperstown on thanksgiving and it would be cool to go with family…

I like going in the dead of winter when the crowds are smaller and you can take your time and walk around and read everything.

I cannot possibly agree with this more.

I went last February–the post about it’s on my blog–and it was amazing going when it was empty. You really could see EVERYTHING. It was kind of magical.

  14. Nick in SF October 8th, 2008 at 3:36 pm

    Why Wilson Betemit?

Better in Cooperstown that the Bronx. He’ll be well cared for.

I forgot the centerpiece of the 2008 Yankees display:

    * an animatronic Yankee player tipping his cap over and over and over…

  15. Nick in SF October 8th, 2008 at 3:37 pm

    *than* the Bronx, I meant

I hope you offer the Posada bobblehead. Make sure they make it face the corner.

“Moose, I know you are 39 years old, a Stanford grad (in 3 years no less), 270 victories or so, but you can’t have any ice cream, candy. And your playmates can’t have any either”.

What does this show? A lack of plain ole common sense, or ‘sechel’”. But what do you expect from an engineer from Peoria?

  18. Drive 4-5 October 8th, 2008 at 3:41 pm

Cooperstown is a beautiful village and the HOF is beyond words. If you go to Cooperstown and like bbq, head south on Rt 28 to Oneonta and drive a couple miles west on Rt 7.. If you have the windows down you’ll smell your way to Brooks BBQ, otherwise look for it on the left habd side of the road. It’s better than any bbq in in NYC, Dinasaur included.

    John Heyman through mlbtraderumors:
“The Yankees apparently want to sign two free agent starters out of C.C. Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, and Derek Lowe. If Sabathia is one of them they’d be looking at a total outlay of $200MM or more.”

    That wouldnt surprise me.

  20. TKinDC October 8th, 2008 at 3:48 pm

    Nick –

I’m glad you didn’t include anything from A-Rod (win a ring first, Alex) but nothing from Madonna? A false eyelash? A piercing from her bellybutton? An Evita movie poster?

  21. Dave D October 8th, 2008 at 3:52 pm

Kim Jones: Damon wasn’t the only one in the clubhouse who shared the opinion that Joba isin’t durable enough to pitch 200 innings or wanted him to stay in the pen.

Saucy the first time I went to Cooperstown I went with the college I work at, and they go every year, the Saturday before Thanksgiving. It just so happened that it snowed that day in Cooperstown, just a light dusting, and the town was absolutely beautiful. There were other people there, of course, but we basically had the place to ourselves in terms of not being overrrun, or having to wait to see anything.

I would highly recommend fall in Cooperstown. Winter in Cooperstown could also be beautiful, but because upstate NY gets a lot of snow, it could be trickier (and colder). But I agree you would have the whole place to yourself by and large.

Pete reminds me of the Pied Piper of Hamlin. In the middle of discussion about something? No problem. New topic? All jump up!

So this is from the other thread, in response to something someone said in the other thread. However, since the jump was made, I will respond here!

    _______________________________________________________

By the way I don’t blame Damon for being upset, nor do I blame Girardi for sitting him in Minny. Damon was coming from a player perspective, and a player who had the highest average in the AL at that point in time and wanted to keep it. Girardi was coming from the perspective of a manager who wanted to keep his player as healthy as possible and knew that since Damon had problems with his knees, playing every game of the series on turf would not be a good thing for him.

Maybe players who would not have emoted about “Mr. Torre” felt more freedom to do so about/with their colleague Joe Girardi. It appears Damon got over his upset? Yes it does. Perhaps another tempest in a teapot on a slow news day, since the Yankees aren’t in the postseason so there’s nothing to stir up about everyone’s favorite target – the Yankees.

    trisha,

That’s one of the best things about this blog. Lots of new threads. That’s what separates this one from the others.

Pete puts up crap (yeah, I said it). We respond in kind. The banter goes back and forth. But the respect is still there (it is mutual, right?).

Heyman’s the one that the vitriol should be pointed at. It wasn’t right of him to invoke the 3 Wise Men in his hearsay gossipy talk.

Took my girlfriend to Cooperstown. She loved that Farmers Museum, but, hated the hall of fame. Needless to say she’s not a sports fan. Nor does she really know anything about the Yankees or baseball. When they traded for Arod she called me up and proclaimed “the yankees traded for Adox” She also bought me a Carl Pavano shirt.

mel, actually there’s no vitriol since you have to put stock in this stuff to begin with to have real vitriol. I just keep pointing out that I believe less than half of what I read since I have learned the hard way, and believe nothing of the rumor mill type stuff unless there is direct attribution from the “indicted”. To me the rest remains suspect.

Mutual respect? I can only speak from my side. Yeah the respect is there. That still doesn’t mean that I have to drink all the kool aid served!

    :)

  45. mel October 8th, 2008 at 4:18 pm

    trisha,

We don’t all drink Pete’s kool-aid. Far from it. Some of us are a little sensitive when he criticizes our beloved Yanks. But as gracious guests, we try not to spit on our host. As tempting as it is!

  46. Drive 4-5 October 8th, 2008 at 4:19 pm

    Comment on Pete’s last thread:

All season long I felt the Yankees were being sheepish about promoting the end of Yankee Stadium. It’s like they didnt want to overdo it because at the end of the day, the only reason for tearing the place down was to increase profits.

Yankee Stadium had it’s faults, especially when compared to newer ballparks. But I’m convinced that if the Yankees could have reaped more luxury box revenue out of the old place they wouldnt have cared less about the lack of amenities for the fans.

I attended the last 2 games and I’m glad I did. They were wonderful, especially the entire Sept 21 event.

But in the weeks leading up to the closing, the Yankees could have done a better job with pulling the games left to be played gimmick.

Much worse IMO, was that many, many fans travelled from all over the country to have a last visit to Monumbent Park. The Yankees held fast to opening the gates at 11AM.

On Saturday Sept 20 we were in line at 10 AM before the gates opened and entered at 11:10AM. At 11:15AM the security guards announced that Monument Park was closed! 15 minutes after the gates opened they had already met their criteria for the number of people allowed on line to visit Monument Park!

I saw kids cry, grandfathers stare in disbelief and otherwise sane middle aged men screaming at security guards. The Yankees knew the demand was going to be there and did nothing to react to it. They should have opened the gates 2 hours sooner for the each game of the last homestand.

For a team that didnt blink an eye spending $46mil on Kei Igawa, a few hours of overtime for their security force would be a drop in the bucket.

  47. Bankrupt October 8th, 2008 at 4:19 pm

    Sign Sabathia, Burnett

    Make Joba the SU man.

Trade Hughes for a position player

Re-sign Mussina, Pettitte, and Milton Bradley

    moves to start another dynasty.

  48. YANKS IN 2010 October 8th, 2008 at 4:22 pm

    BANKRUPT

If you are going to make Joba the setup man (which I agree with), why would you trade Hughes too?

  49. mel October 8th, 2008 at 4:23 pm

    Tom,

    For me personally:

    1. When he’s good, he’s very good.
    2. He’s turned a corner, IMO
    3. He won’t command a 7 yr. contract
    4. He won’t cost $20-$23M per year
    5. He’s got AL East experience
    6. He’d be a devestating addition to the Red Sox
    7. He has made no secret that he’d like to pitch for the Yankees.
    8. The guys seemed jazzed about the prospect of him coming.
    9. He was the strikeout king this season
    10. I have a soft spot for the underdog

  50. mel October 8th, 2008 at 4:27 pm

Okay. Maybe the players got excited about AJ coming because that meant they won’t have to face him. But still, it sounded pretty excited.

  51. trisha - RAYS IN 3! (yes I know it's a 7 game series...) October 8th, 2008 at 4:28 pm

Drive, I went to the Sunday game and witnessed much the same in terms of waiting to get in and then being told Monument Park was closed. Only my dumb perserverence kept me in that line. But I spent more than 2 and 1/2 hours waiting on the ramps inside the Stadium. Some people had been there 4 and 1/2 hours. That part was awful. I agree.

The rest of the day and night was well worth it and I soon forgot that trauma.

  52. trisha - RAYS IN 3! (yes I know it's a 7 game series...) October 8th, 2008 at 4:31 pm

mel, I am well aware that not everybody drink’s Pete’s kool aid. Sometimes it appears that displeases Pete and he gets testy. That is certainly his right. I am thinking it is my right to speak my position in terms as strong as the one he presents. If and when the day comes that he says that is not permissible, I will back off. Until then I see no reason to temper my thoughts as long as I show respect in so doing. High emotion does not always equate to disrespect. Being called delusional by the host, on the other hand, is not the most respectful thing to have to read. Respect is a two-way street.

Did you get in to Monument Park?

My wife & I spent 13 hours at the Stadium that Sunday. After being shut out on Saturday, we made sure we were at the ballpark before 10AM. We finally got into Monument Park and on the fiels at 3PM. We left the park when they kicked everyone out around 12:30AM Monday. We loved every minute of it.

“7. He has made no secret that he’d like to pitch for the Yankees.

Really, a free agent has expressed interest in having NY involved in the contract negotiations? Who would have thought it? I mean, players hardly ever involve NY in these things. They know that NY isn’t going to drive up their price, they know NY isn’t going to offer that extra year…oh wait…

    Pass..

Let Boston have Pavono v.2, because we’re surely going to get that if he signs here. If he’s sucessful in Boston so be it, but how many free agent pitcher flops are you willing to justify so “Boston doesn’t get him”?

  57. yanks 1927 October 8th, 2008 at 4:38 pm

i agree with mike francessa, joba is goosse gossage. he is built to be the closer, has the mentality, the physically.

  58. t-rock October 8th, 2008 at 4:39 pm

Kim Jones has really spiced up this show.

Mike solo was brutal, he was talking to himself and bouncing ideas of himself.

  61. RalphieD October 8th, 2008 at 4:41 pm

lol yea your right mel…also the balls and strikes seem a little out of whack too

  62. PS42 October 8th, 2008 at 4:45 pm

My bet is Boston doesn’t even talk to CC, and goes hard after Burnett. This isn’t a luxury that NY has. They have to go after CC, thus Boston will overpay for Burnett.
Yeah, if he’s healthy, he’s sick – especially when you look at their top four on paper. But, that “healthy” assumption is one I don’t think NY is in any position to make.
In combination with the concerns (that are real, no matter how many of us would like to think he’s invincible) that CC has over the abuse he suffered this year (and consequential implosion in the playoffs), NY can hardly afford to have 200million dollars of arms on the DL next year at any point in time.
Plus, I’d rather have CC and Tex. No way do they get all three, and I think CC and Tex is much, much more comfortable than CC and Burnett and another mishap first baseman.
Just my opinion I guess..you guys can kill it if you want. But, I’m tired of FA’s taking so much advantage of Brian Cashman’s complete inability to see past what Joey from the Bronx is calling for, and make logical decision based on the information at hand.

Burnett has the potential to be awesome when healty.
So did Matt Clement and Jose Contreras.

Please, let’s pass on this one. Let someone else deal with the jokes.

  63. Tom October 8th, 2008 at 4:45 pm

Mel, I see. I just don’t think it’s a great idea to pay a 32 year old with a history of arm problems 15-20 million for 5 years. He’s very good when he’s healthy, but, how many years has he been healthy-3 out of 10 seasons?

This year he’s pitched more inings than he’s ever had and if the past is prelude then he is due for another stint of arm trouble. In 2002 he pitched over 200 inings, then he went on the Dl in 2003. In 2005 he pitched 200 inings then he missed 9-10 starts in 2006 and another 5-7 in 2007.

  64. PS42 October 8th, 2008 at 4:50 pm

FWIW, Burnett’s DL stints can probably be directly related to the team he was playing for. Like Beckett, and several other guys, those DL stints have gone down signigicantly once placed on a team with something to actually play for and something to maybe push the pain aside for a start or two.
How many of Burnett’s DL trips were something he could have pitched through? Even the GM called him out on this last year, saying he was soft (paraphrased).
I would imagine that with something to pitch for (ie a contract or a playoff spot or championship ring), and he would suddenly stop with the little things that he takes vacations for – but again, I’m not convinced in this theory one hundred percent.
Plus, if we’re going to sign a FA who is injury prone, I’d rather the much more talented Ben Sheets. The risk is exactly the same – as is the reward.

Also, this is a great board. I can’t believe I haven’t been around.

Oh yeah, Knicks preseason game tonight.

    Yay?

  66. PS42 October 8th, 2008 at 4:51 pm

Also, I’ve tried finding the “quote” where Burnett has said he’d like to pitch in NY mentioned above..

Anyone know where I could find this? Just wondering if it’s real, or if it’s real BS?

  67. mel October 8th, 2008 at 4:52 pm

    Tom,

Great points as usual. But I don’t hold TJ and complications from TJ against a pitcher.

I don’t know AJ’s whole medical history, but I do know that Wang has missed 5-7 starts in a season before (this year), Andy, Mo, Beckett, and on and on.

Pros & cons for all the FA pitchers and I’ll support whoever shows up.

  68. PS42 October 8th, 2008 at 4:52 pm

    SA

that’s the funniest thing on this thread. I think this year, after a full lifetime of dedication, I’m boycotting. I won’t buy a single ticket.

  69. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and show CC the money (and food) October 8th, 2008 at 4:55 pm

    PS42-totally done with the Knicks?
Sometimes I would watch them/follow them for the laughter factor. They were such a soap opera. lol
    Oh the Pain

  70. Kurt October 8th, 2008 at 4:56 pm

    Goooooooooooood news!!!!!!!!

    According to New York Times:

” …..the latest from Tom Tom: you can buy, for $13, any of 25 replacement voices. So instead of hearing the usual monotone GPS Lady telling you to turn right in 500 feet, you hear John Cleese, Burt Reynolds, Dennis Hopper, Mr. T, *Curt Schilling*, Gary Busey, or, now, Kim Cattrall. ……… “

  71. PS42 October 8th, 2008 at 4:57 pm

Yeah. I kind of gave up two years ago, but it’s definite now. I can only take so much, and with the prices of the tickets, it’s just not smart to like that team. In fact, it’s stupid, and if you’re doing it, you have more money than common sense. I can watch them lose by thirty on my couch night in and night out.
    ha.

I’m wary of the Yanks pitching, but I’m more concerned about the offense.

There’s a good chance they will lose Abreu and his onp and 100 rbi. Nady had 1/2 of a career season in Pittsburgh and eventually went back to his low obp high strike out ways when joining the Yanks.

An outfield of Damon, Gardner and Nady would be, by far, the weakest in the AL East. They certainly dont compare with Boston or Tampa Bay.

But if they can sign Texiera to replace Abreu and get bounce back years from Cano, Matsui and A Rod they might be competitve even if they only sign a second tier free agent pitcher.

After this past season, I find myself having low expectations for next year. I dont exactly bubble with confidence with either Cashman or Girardi.

  74. mel October 8th, 2008 at 4:59 pm

So Gary Busey would direct you to the nearest bar. Dennis Hopper would direct you to the nearest AA meeting, Curt Schilling would tell you how much the Yankees suck, and Kim Cattrall would do her best cougar act?

I wouldn’t mind John Cleese. At least it’d be entertaining.

  75. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Keep Manny away !" October 8th, 2008 at 5:00 pm

i agree with mike francessa, joba is goosse gossage. he is built to be the closer, has the mentality, the physically.

He’s built to be a starter and always has now Shaddup. :)

Knicks preseason yeeeeeeeah can’t wait what better time not to look at the t.v. than this.

OK people I’ll be back later.

    Oh for chuckles

Tom Tom Curt Schilling: I”m the greatest thing ever.

    Me: what?

Tom Tom Curt: Yeah, I just thought I’d let you know.

Me: I’ve heard you say that over and over again.

Tom Tom: Yeah, I just can’t get enough of saying it, and while I’m at it, let me talk about everything under the sun and see if I can sign you up on the Straight Talk Express.

Me: Tosses Tom Tom out window and drives around aimlessly not knowing where I’m going but happy to not hear Curt Schilling in my car.

  77. Tom October 8th, 2008 at 5:00 pm

Mel, I agree with the TJ recovery. It was unfair of me to bring that up.

I guess after Pavano(Anno Pavanoni) I fear pitchers with Dl stints that are related to their shoulders.

  78. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and show CC the money (and food) October 8th, 2008 at 5:01 pm

Oh,I wouldn’t/won’t spend money to go to any games. I’ll follow on tv and laugh at them.
I don’t even remember the last time I went to a Knicks game. I think it was sometime pre-Isiah.

    What a disaster.

  79. trisha - RAYS IN 3! (yes I know it's a 7 game series...) October 8th, 2008 at 5:02 pm

Drive, broke my little heart but I did not get onto the field. That was really what I wanted to do! My ex (my date for the day) and I actually split up and went into the Stadium separately because he didn’t feel like waiting in the sun while they jerked us around at the gate, and I was afraid to give up my space. He got in and over to Monument Park 15 minutes after they got into the Stadium. I waited 2 and 1/2 hours – just long enough for the field to be closed for BP.

Now that they are giving Stadium tours, maybe I’ll go down and take one and get to go on the field. Better late than never! I wanted to take home some dirt from the warning track but I did the next best thing. I swiped some sod and dirt from Monument Park.

    :)

  80. PS42 October 8th, 2008 at 5:04 pm

He’s built to be a starter and always has now Shaddup..

No, he’s not. He’d automatically be the best releif pitcher in the game. He’s an injury prone starter who hasn’t ever proved he can sustain that position at an above average production level. He has shown flashes of brilliance. So has Clay Buchholz.

I say bullpen all the way, but they’ll only make that decision after he gets hurt. Yet again.

  81. mel October 8th, 2008 at 5:05 pm

    Tom,

Pavano’s voice choice would be Mr. T.

    “I pity the fool”

Because no one else pities Pavano.

Looking into the tea leaves, I see a return to the NL. Mets need pitching. lol. But he’d be a risk batting 2-3 times a game.

  82. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Keep Manny away !" October 8th, 2008 at 5:05 pm

    Starter.

  83. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Keep Manny away !" October 8th, 2008 at 5:06 pm

And Joba would probably tell you he’d want to be a SP and to go you know where, he’s always wanted to be a SP, his dad even echoed it, Stop making him something he doesn’t want to be.

  84. PS42 October 8th, 2008 at 5:07 pm

    Tom,

    You mean like Joba?

“I fear pitchers with Dl stints that are related to their shoulders.”

me too, man. This is why I advocate the bullpen guy. Imagine going 99% of the year only having to get to the seventh or eigth inning before the game was over..
Let CC take his spot, and move him to the role he dominates at. Like Wetland and Mo…just in time to train him to be the next ten year wunderkid.

  85. saucY October 8th, 2008 at 5:07 pm

I’d go with Mr T, no doubt

‘i pity the fool stuck in thruway traffic, now bear right…’

  86. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Keep Manny away !" October 8th, 2008 at 5:07 pm

That was my last post you can write w/e you want later I’ll respond to it but right now I got to clock out soon so later peoples.

  87. PS42 October 8th, 2008 at 5:08 pm

Ok, Brandon. We can agree to disagree.
I guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens in June when he comes back from the DL. Again.

  88. trisha - RAYS IN 3! (yes I know it's a 7 game series...) October 8th, 2008 at 5:08 pm

PS42, I have mentioned Burnett wanting to play for the Yankees but it strictly came from Waldman and Sterling mentioning that he had said it to them.

  89. PS42 October 8th, 2008 at 5:09 pm

You stayed an extra eight minutes to talk to a blog?

    Forget that. 5:59 – I’m out. lol.

  90. mel October 8th, 2008 at 5:10 pm

The Yankees owe it to Joba to give him the opportunity to start. He’s always been a starter, he wants to start.

Failed starters go to the bullpen. Guys who can’t stay healthy go to the bullpen.

If Joba can stay healthy, he’ll start.

But he shouldn’t see the bullpen until it becomes a certainty that he can’t stay healthy.

  91. t-rock October 8th, 2008 at 5:10 pm

Tonight’s game is not going to be pretty… this is their first full game in D’Antoni’s system.

Wouldn’t shock me to see a 97-142 type score. It will take time to get used to.

  92. Drive 4-5 October 8th, 2008 at 5:10 pm

    Later y’all.

    GO PHILLIES!

    (Sorry Dodger rooters)

  95. PS42 October 8th, 2008 at 5:12 pm

    Trisha,

I’ll believe it when it comes from a credible source. Not the Yankee broadcasters. No offense, but their couldn’t be two bigger homers (well, Suzyn anyhow. John is actually pretty fair in his game calling).
When it’s in quotes, and from the horses mouth, I’ll buy it. Till then, it’s just hype to get the fans excited and the dollar signs growing.
I can’t imagine that he doesn’t want to get back with Beckett, whom he’s very good friends with and owns a partial business with (a hunting ranch in Texas).
My guess is he goes straight to Boston, for huge money, and we’ll get CC, and we’ll see how the cards fall.
Oh, LAA takes the Flier on Sheets and it works great all year until they fold in the playoffs next year with Manny striking out to end game 5 in Fenway. lol.

  96. RalphieD October 8th, 2008 at 5:14 pm

lol this gameday really cracks me up…ajax caught a fly ball behind the 2nd baseman lol according to gameday

  97. Tom October 8th, 2008 at 5:15 pm

PS42, I’ve always thought that Joba’s true calling was to be a “fire man” in the mold of Goose and Mike Marshall (look up his ’74 stats- best year a relief pitcher ever had IMO).

  98. Tom October 8th, 2008 at 5:19 pm

    Mel,

    Here’s Pavano’s press confrence Rocky 3 Style

Interviewer: What’s your prediction for the the upcomming year?
    Carl Pavano: My prediction?
    Interviewer: Yes, your prediction.
    [Pavano looks into camera]
    Carl Pavano: Pain

  99. PS42 October 8th, 2008 at 5:21 pm

    I agree, Tom.

I hate that they’re starting him, and probably, wasting his talents. But alas, I’m not the GM, so hindsight is much easier to critique. Which I’ll certainly do.

  100. the burning question October 8th, 2008 at 5:26 pm

The Ichiro entry makes it sound like he tied the single season hit record…with 200 hits. You’d think a press release from the HOF would be clearer.

  106. Jeff October 8th, 2008 at 7:26 pm

Can someone tell me what Joba has done for his hat to be in the Hall of Fame just yet?

  107. 86w183 October 8th, 2008 at 9:33 pm

the Hall of Fame asks for everything they can think of. About 75 % of the stuff they have if not more is in storage and not on display. They should really be less greedy in what they ask for and make sure they display it.

You don’t have to go up there in the dead of winter to avoid the crowds. I went in the srping several years back on a week day and it was virtually deserted. It was about 50 degrees or so and I could take by time at everything.

One word of caution. If you have been to other Halls of Fame you will find Cooperstown to be the least modern, lest technical of any Hall…. certainly any Hall I’ve been to. the audio/visual offerings are minimal and that’s disappinting.

MLB should consider building a baseball “museum” somewhere that’s more accessible and make it hi tech… don’t move the “Hall of Fame”. Cooperstown should always be its home, but baseball could reachout to a new generation of fans with a baseball museum in Chicago or St. Louis for example.

Speaking of museums… anyone have a scouting report on the new Sports Museum in the city down by the South Street Seaport???
