  1. trisha - RAYS IN 3! (yes I know it's a 7 game series...)

Enough with this Meacham firing! Let’s celebrate Trenton’s ELASG!!!

    :)

  2. TurnTwo

    awesome. so there.

  3. Tom

Is there a better deal than minor league ball?

  4. Al from BK( Favre=MVP, BRING BOWA BACK and SHOW CC THE MONEY!)

Meacham is gone what a great day.

  5. AZ Four

Tim Wakefield is a big game pitcher?

    2007 – 9.64 ERA (1 start – loss)
    2005 – 6.75 ERA (1 start – loss)
2004 – 9.72 ERA (4 appearances – 1 win, 3 NDs, did not make it out of the 4th inning in any start)

2003 was his only good postseason.

  6. Fredo Corleone

“2003 was his only good postseason.”

And even his 2003 postseason featured an especially noteworthy “L”.

  7. Al from BK( Favre=MVP, BRING BOWA BACK and SHOW CC THE MONEY!)

“Tim Wakefield is a big game pitcher?

Hopefully its more of the same tonight!

  8. Tom

“2003 was his only good postseason”

And we all know how that ended up: http://video.aol.com/video-det...../412928043

would you guys trade sanchez and edwar to the mets for delgado?

  10. Anthony

Sanchez and Edwar for Delgado? Why don’t we just keep them and sign Giambi for another year if we want an aging power hitter at first base?

  11. Laura

“would you guys trade sanchez and edwar to the mets for delgado?”

I wouldn’t trade a bag of balls for Delgado. Isn’t this the fool who wouldn’t stand for the anthem when he was with TOR?

  12. Patrick

I want no part of Delgado. He’s an aging power hitter with a poor glove and bad base running. Definitely not what the Yankees need…

  13. blackaccord

Delgado and the short porch in RF = 40 hrs… Oh wait.. thats what they said for Giambi too…

  14. Laura

“I want no part of Delgado. He’s an aging power hitter with a poor glove…”

Sounds like Jason Giambi. Been there, done that, don’t want to do it again.

  15. raymagnetic

If I’m not mistaken Delgado was in protest of something which is why he wouldn’t stand for the national anthem. I forget what it was but I believe he had a legitimate gripe about something.

  16. gayle

    Ray

It was not the national anthem it was God Bless America and it was about the war he was protesting it is not that he wouldnt stand up he would like MANY players do go into the clubhouse

  17. Dow Zero

Who said Wakefiled is a big game pitcher anyway? was there a need for a debate.

  18. Al from BK( Favre=MVP, BRING BOWA BACK and SHOW CC THE MONEY!)

Gee Delgado, hes like a Puerto-Rican Giambi. No defense and I think this team has enough guys on the verge of retirement.

  19. TurnTwo

“If I’m not mistaken Delgado was in protest of something which is why he wouldn’t stand for the national anthem. I forget what it was but I believe he had a legitimate gripe about something.”

just off the top of my head, from what i remember it was to protest the American military’s presence on a small Puerto Rican Island, and its use basically for bombing practice.

  20. Fredo Corleone

“If I’m not mistaken Delgado was in protest of something which is why he wouldn’t stand for the national anthem.”

I remember it the same way. Not be an ACLU, save the pregant humpback whale, tree hugging, lefist yahoo, but “land of the free..” means being free to sit in protest during the anthem as much as it means anything.

    Article from Rosenthal –

Will non-white players shun the Sox this off-season due to the the Caucasian-ness of their roster?

    http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/s.....amp;ATT=49

  22. Laura

Is Delgado an American citizen? If he isn’t, then he needs to take his protest somewhere else. You can’t come here, take our American money and then complain about how we do things.

If he really had a problem with it, he would have told the Mets to keep their dirty American money because he didn’t want to play for war makers. Did he do that?

    Yeah, I didn’t think so.

  23. Fredo Corleone

Wakefield had a great postseason………in 1992…..for the Pirates. Since then, not so much.

  24. Fredo Corleone

    “Is Delgado an American citizen?”

I believe he was born in Puerto Rico, which of course locks him in as an American citizen.

  25. vtred

    Sonnanstine vs. BOS this season

    2 starts

    13 IP, 7 H, 2 R (both unearned), 2 BB, 12 Ks

  26. keithr

    Delgado is Puerto Rican……

  27. Fredo Corleone

“Will non-white players shun the Sox this off-season due to the the Caucasian-ness of their roster?”

Oddly, in a May 27th piece, Rosenthal refers to the Red Sox as a “melting pot”, both culturally and in terms of personalities. Nothing like hanging oneself with his own words.

  28. Laura

“I believe he was born in Puerto Rico, which of course locks him in as an American citizen.”

I didn’t know what he was, other than an over the hill 1B.

  29. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--staying to write the story

E-rod: You can’t possibly be serious. Okay, you can, but that article can’t.

  30. Laura

“Will non-white players shun the Sox this off-season due to the the Caucasian-ness of their roster?”

As long as the money BOS pays it’s players is green, no one will care.

What’s so stupid about this article is that no one says Jack Squat about how Hispanic the Mutts roster is. And it’s done by design. Minaya is pretty much discriminating against non-Hispanics and nobody says Boo.

I’m convinced that Willie’s problems with the team had a lot to do with him being black and most of his players being Hispanic.

  31. EDUB

    “Article from Rosenthal -

Will non-white players shun the Sox this off-season due to the the Caucasian-ness of their roster?

    http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/s.....amp;ATT=49

Read that this morning. Seemed like a bit of a strange article but I did notice the abundance of white players the other day. The Jeds, Jacobys, Dustins, Jasons are more prevalent these days esp with Ortiz struggling

  32. Al from BK( Favre=MVP, BRING BOWA BACK and SHOW CC THE MONEY!)

““Will non-white players shun the Sox this off-season due to the the Caucasian-ness of their roster?””

Well I know that CC will not likely go there. I honestly can’t remember a black player on the red-sox except perhaps Coco Crisp/Pokey Reese. Boston is historically a VERY racially divided town. I think Carl Everett said that he felt discriminated against while he was on the Sox or something along those lines.

  33. Don

We don’t have any African American players either.

Though we do have a lot of Latin players (A-Rod, Mariano, Posada, Abreu, Cano, Cabrera, Veras, Marte, Edwar, Betemit etc.)

  34. Jeter God

Didn’t Hunter and Gary Matthews make comments how racist Boston was? Bonds did too right?

  35. CountryClub

Check out a scouts take on Brackman, Bleich and Romine out in Hawaii. He has a promising info on all three of them. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn.....grey_jason

  36. Laura

“We don’t have any African American players either.”

    I guess Jeter doesn’t count.

  37. X-Mann

Evan Roberts and Francessa are a very odd pairing. This doesn’t have much juice.

Truthfully, I don’t think any of his partners have real staying power. Beningo would be great in small doses. Kim Jones was intriguing as well.

Eddie C was very knowledgeable, but he is too dull to be a full-time personality.

  38. Tom

I think the Redsox’s preference on drafting college players is why the team is mostly white. Not many african-americans play baseball and most hispanic counrties amateur players aren’t in the draft.

  39. patrick max

torre getting hammered today in the media

  40. CountryClub

Francessa said he doesnt plan on ever having a full time partner again. There will always be people coming and going so that it doesnt get stale. Similar to what Dan Patrick used to do, I would think.

  41. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

    I guess Jeter doesn’t count.

It depends who you talk to.

  42. Laura

“torre getting hammered today in the media”

He was getting criticized on the baseball podcast I listen to as well. Something about his bullpen management choices. Where have I heard that before?

  43. Al from BK( Favre=MVP, BRING BOWA BACK and SHOW CC THE MONEY!)

“We don’t have any African American players either.”

That number will go up when we get CC :)

  44. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

Tom you do know Masterson is black right ?

  45. Laura

    “I guess Jeter doesn’t count.”

“It depends who you talk to. ”

Where I come from, all it takes is a drop.

    :P

  46. harwood

Torre is making Cashman look like a genius.

  47. Tom

Brandon, yes I do. What’s your point?

  48. Redding

    Masterson is Jamaican right?

  49. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

I know Laura but got to Harlem or Brooklyn and tell them Jeter is black some people would actually laugh at it. He’s a brotha but not really a brotha and those Panaramic Vista roof commercials pisses alot of that community off for some reason.

  50. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

but go to * (sorry multi-tasking right now) :)

  51. Ed - looking forward to 2009

    Brandon -

same goes for Jason Kidd too.

  52. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

Brandon, yes I do. What’s your point?

You almost implied they had no black player, just saying Masterson is Jamaican.(Born in Kingston, Jamaica)

  53. Laura

“I know Laura but got to Harlem or Brooklyn and tell them Jeter is black some people would actually laugh at it. He’s a brotha but not really a brotha and those Panaramic Vista roof commercials pisses alot of that community off for some reason.”

It probably has something to do with the fact that Jeter doesn’t seem to date women of color. They are either mixed, white or Spanish. I can see why that would piss off a few sistas.

He may not think he’s Black (Tiger Woods doesn’t either for some reason), but he’s Black to me. Therefore, I will count him in the Yankees’ brotha poll.

  54. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

Ed you can add Jason Williams.

  55. Ed - looking forward to 2009

wait, Masterson is Jamaican? I seriously thought he was white, or a Rican.

  56. Don

Jeter is African American, but not on the same level as Sabathia, Crawford, Rollins, Hunter, Upton etc.

  57. Ed - looking forward to 2009

    Brandon –

speaking of Williams, its a shame that his career only lasted one season.

  58. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

Howard, Griffey, Sheff, Floyd, Kemp, Willis….

  59. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

I’m talking about Jason Williams I’m talking about the Duke kid.

  60. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

    woops my fault Jay.

  63. Tom

Brandon. I wasn’t implying that at all. I was just trying to point out that the redsox draft a lot of college players. When you look at the college players who get drafted (with Price being the exception) in the first 2 rounds they are, for the most part, white.

Most African Americans who get drafted in the high rounds of the draft are highschool kids. Teams like the redsox and the A’s don’t often draft highschool kids.

  80. Anthony

I didn’t think anyone would have to say this, but here goes: Just because someone is born in Jamaica doesn’t mean they are black. Masterson is not black.

  81. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

  83. raymagnetic

Justin Masterson may be from Jamaica, but I don’t think he’s black. There are a ton of white, chinese, and indian people who are born and raised in Jamaica. Being from Jamaica doesn’t necessarily mean you’re black. However the Jamaican motto is out of many one people. They are far less race divided than we are in America.

Saucy, Jamaicans who are black most definitely consider themselves black.

  84. pat

If you are born in Jamaica, you are Jamaican. Many Jamaicans are of African descent but some are also of European descent. Country of origin does not necessarily tell you ethnicity of origin.

  85. Ed - looking forward to 2009

    update….

  86. Tom

Ed, Gillick can recommend to Cashman that he should try to trade for a Victorino or a Dobbs. Other than that there is nothing more he can do.

  87. saucY

raymagnetic, i guess it was just an odd case then when a jamaican i had met took strong offense to being called ‘black’ (not african)…

  88. Yankee Trader

The Yankees are looking into signing two free agent starters, which will use up most of the alloted money if the payroll is to be at 180 million as reported.

We have quite a few Type A free agents-Abreu, ?I-Rod, Marte if option not picked up.

After CC , not sure who I want as a starter. Pettitte signing can wait IMO.

Suspect we will not sign Teixeira, or any other position player that will be making 15-25 million a year.

We will look into trading surplus pitching prospects for young position players to fill the holes. Blalock mentioned. How about Ryan Zimmerman for 1st, Garrett Atkins a former 1st baseman?

Don’t count on getting Joey Votto, and I say no to trading for Adrian Gonzalez, Prince Fielder, or Ryan Howard all who hit lefties poorly and have tons of strikeouts, and would cost us a ton of good prospects!! If you want a lefty basher at first who’ll hit 40-50 homers, and strike out a lot, as a Yankee you might as well sign Adam Dunn for 1st,OF[eventually moving to DH]. At least we don’t lose our best farm system players.

  89. trisha - RAYS IN 3! (yes I know it's a 7 game series...)

“torre getting hammered today in the media”

Well deserved. It is appearing that his achilles heel traveled with him.

About birth place, etc. I believe we had this discussion in the past. I know I’m confused about it. My brother is Italian, my sister-in-law Jewish. My brother was in France when his children were born. Nobody ever calls them French!

Look at it this way. Pat said if someone is born in Jamaica, they are Jamaican. Use this hypothetical. A woman on a cruise ship is pregnant and goes into labor early. The ship is in Jamaica. Her baby is born in Jamaican. Would anyone ever say her baby is Jamaican?

I swear that stuff confuses the heck out of me.
