A little news from Tampa:

Chien-Ming Wang threw off the mound for the first time and reported no problems with his foot.

Meanwhile Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones stopped by to visit with George Steinbrenner. The organizational meetings are expected to finish up today but some aspects could go on until tomorrow.

    Great news.

I bet it killed Wang that he couldn’t pitch.

30 starts lost between Wang and Joba’s injuries=at least 6 wins

  2. Bronx 78 October 17th, 2008 at 4:02 pm

Players want Burnett… lets get him.

  3. you gotta have faith(MOOSE FOR PRESIDENT!)(hopefully the rays kick red sox butt) October 17th, 2008 at 4:05 pm

    good for wang!
hmm since they decided joba was a starter, what is going to do to get his innings up?

i cant believe the rays threw away a 7-0 lead, if they dont win tomorrow they will be in some serious “stuff” lol

Great news about Wang. He was sorely missed this season.

  5. saucY October 17th, 2008 at 4:11 pm

pete, are you going to tampa to cover the game tomorrow?

  6. mel October 17th, 2008 at 4:14 pm

    Doreen,

Left you a “little” note on the other side. Now you’ve got me pumped up!

  7. I hope Gerrit Cole's arm falls off!!! October 17th, 2008 at 4:18 pm

I just hope the yanks can trade Jackson and Hughes for Peavy and then go sign CC!

  8. Laura October 17th, 2008 at 4:20 pm

I don’t think we are getting Peavy. He seems to want to stay in the NL. I don’t blame him. CC is our top priority, followed by Burnett. After that, it’s a crap shoot. I’m not high on Lowe. Garland is younger so he may be a better bet.

  9. Guard October 17th, 2008 at 4:20 pm

    Geritt Cole,

Agree. I wonder if Peavy will waive his NTC for NY though

  10. Oddessy October 17th, 2008 at 4:22 pm

I really hope they don’t put all their eggs in the CC basket and in the meantime, allow Boston or the Mets to snatch up Burnett for a good deal while we miss out on CC.

  11. NITRO October 17th, 2008 at 4:25 pm

Francessa brought up a good idea

What about trading for Chipper Jones and playing him at 1st base?

“I just hope the yanks can trade Jackson and Hughes for Peavy and then go sign CC!”

    oh boy,
trading young talent for the superstars, we’ve never done that before.

Do you really want to pay out 18 mil/year for AJ Burnett…let him go to the mets or boston…

  15. you gotta have faith(MOOSE FOR PRESIDENT!)(hopefully the rays kick red sox butt) October 17th, 2008 at 4:29 pm

but i doubt it, chipper is getting old.

  16. pat October 17th, 2008 at 4:30 pm

    NITRO

I suggested Chipper at 1st the other day and everyone shot me down. Said he’s the face of the franchise and they wouldn’t trade him.

  17. jennifer October 17th, 2008 at 4:32 pm

That wasn’t an original idea by Mike. Someone on here suggested it. Proves he reads this blog. :P

How many games has Chipper played at first?

  19. Mr. Haze October 17th, 2008 at 4:32 pm

I read somewhere that Peavy likes taking at-bats, so that’s why he’s looking at NL teams only.

As for Wang, boy, was he sorely missed this year. Assume he got his 19 wins again… or even just 17. The Yanks would have ended the season with well over 90 wins, putting them in contention with the Rays for the division pennant.

Since Wang is throwing so early now, in preparation for next season – can someone please, PLEASE, suggest to him to learn a couple new pitches? Like a cutter and a forkball? It’s getting too easy to sit on the sinker!

  20. Ed - looking forward to 2009 October 17th, 2008 at 4:36 pm

How many games has Chipper played at first?

    zero.

  21. pat October 17th, 2008 at 4:37 pm

    Yanks 2010

None but is it a big stretch to think he could.

  22. YANKS IN 2010 October 17th, 2008 at 4:38 pm

    Exactly

So please tell me why we would want him….

He would be a perfect addition if we were actually close to going to the WS…but guess what….we are about 2 years away from even sniffing it

this is who I would consider trading for from the Braves:

Gregor Blanco, 366 OBP in the leadoff spot. could be our full time OFER.

Martin Prado, excellent bench player with a excellent bat and OBP in the 370s which makes Betemit look like a little leaguer

  26. pat October 17th, 2008 at 4:43 pm

I was only half serious when I suggested Chipper the other day because a friend who lives in ATL told me the Braves GM said they needed an OF with a little power and he used Nady as an example of the kind of player they would be looking for. I asked what would it take to get Chipper- Nady + what?

i dont think we need an outfielder, we have plenty, unless brett shows he cant step up, but i think hes our center fielder and i really like him

1st base and pitching is wat they need to be focused on, and a possible utility player, im tired of betemit

possible utility player, im tired of betemit

basically, Ransom made his case of staying with the team during the last 2 months of the season.

if Cashman decides to look elsewhere, try Martin Prado. For a bench player, he bats 320 with a 370 OBP. wow!!

  38. YANKS IN 2010 October 17th, 2008 at 4:50 pm

  39. pat October 17th, 2008 at 4:51 pm

“Who do you favor for 1B?”

Tex for 5 years even if they have to overpay money to keep the years down. More than 5 years or 5 + options, I’d pass on him.

  40. Ed - looking forward to 2009 October 17th, 2008 at 4:52 pm

    I mean, Rich Aurilia.

  42. vinny-b October 17th, 2008 at 4:55 pm

why not Mark Loretta, for utility/bench?

    he is a FA.

and he is at an age, where he may not demand ++ playing time. He doesn’t give away at bats, and have seen him get many clutch hits.

  43. YANKS IN 2010 October 17th, 2008 at 4:57 pm

Here’s the deal…you can’t get Tex and CC…because then you are SUPPOSED to win

Someone please tell me the last team that was supposed to win and did from 2001-2008. The winners have all been sleepers…and NOT the team with the highest payroll

There is a delicate balance between smart free agent signings and being a glutton in the open market…you get CC because you don’t have a true #1 and you NEED him…but you pass on Tex…cuz you already have the highest paid player in the game on the other side of the diamond

    Get it?

  47. Tom October 17th, 2008 at 5:00 pm

YANKS IN 2010, All players are money grubbers. Bernie almost signed with the Sox and Posada said he would have signed with the Mets if they offered more money. Pettite went to the Astros after he tols the Yankees he’d only comeback if they made him the highest paid lefty in baseball.

I do know that Teixeira is not yet 29 and he averages 36 hr and 120 rbis a year.

“Meanwhile Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones stopped by to visit with George Steinbrenner.”

Please don’t tell me that Pac-Man is going to be our new centerfielder/scrip club liason!!

  49. Yankee Trader October 17th, 2008 at 5:01 pm

On Grant Balfour- he had the best situational stats of any Tampa pitcher against lefties [BA .220] , with no home runs in 25.1 innings. Now he’s given up the biggest one in his career.

On Jake Peavy, if we’re willing to take on Kahlil Greene’s also, we probably could do without adding Hughes or Jackson to the deal. Remember though, that lefties hit .268 against him and his away ERA was 4.28, with 13 of 17 homers given up on the road. Buyer beware!

On Burnett, why does Boston need another starter? Tampa and Boston’s starting rotation is pretty much set. My guess is that they’ll spend money to give Bay and extension and try and use Crisp as a trade chip, to try and find a catcher.

If you want a FA lefty, and it’s not Perez, and if CC goes to a West coast team, or stays in the NL, Randy Wolf, whose arm is rehabilitated, could be a good fit if Houston doesn’t get him first.

  66. Quilvio Imposter October 17th, 2008 at 5:18 pm

I would love for Jerry Jones to eventually own the Yankees. He is the best owner in sports (now that George has stepped down), cares about the fans, wants to win, and is obsessed with making his team the focal point of the sport— something that we have lost a little bit of.

  67. paulie October 17th, 2008 at 5:18 pm

Any chance Cashman goes after Casey Blake for first base and fill in for A-Rod at 3rd when the $30 Million is on tour with Madonna?

  68. Yankee Trader October 17th, 2008 at 5:21 pm

Let’s say the Yankees have 35-40 million they’re willing to spend after raises and arbitration. They don’t want to be at 209 million again. Also decide if you’re spending 6M to bring Marte back, leaving you with 29-34 million.

Which players, in order are on your list, and the max/year you’ll spend on them?

  70. Fran October 17th, 2008 at 5:39 pm

I was listening to Michael Kay before and he was reading the list of attendees at the Tampa organizational meeting. He noted that Girardi was not on the list. It does seem a little odd that the manager is not there for meetings where they are discussing player personnel.

  71. Ed - looking forward to 2009 October 17th, 2008 at 5:39 pm

Jake Peavy would need “a lot of convincing” to approve a trade to the Yankees or any American League team, his agent said today.

“He has a strong preference for the National League,” Barry Axelrod said of Peavy, the San Diego Padres ace who is being shopped. “He has a strong preference for a team that has a chance to win in the next few years.”

As the Star-Ledger reported, the Yankees have had preliminary discussions with the Padres on Peavy and believe that if they are willing to part with young pitching they could pique San Diego’s interest.

  72. E-Rod October 17th, 2008 at 5:49 pm

    A lot of convincing?

What the hell is he afraid about coming to the AL? If he’s confident in himself and his abilities, he should have no problem switching leagues.

  73. The Cro October 17th, 2008 at 5:50 pm

It’s obvious that CC Sabathia is the best available FA Pitcher this offseason and the concensus on this blog is that AJ Burnett or Derek Lowe are the “next best” level of FA Starting Pitchers out there.

With this in mind, I was pleasantly surprised to see somebody else mention earlier in this thread a name of another FA Starting Pitcher whom I believe has been totally undervalued and overlooked: Jon Garland

If I am correct, he’s under 30 (28-29?) and has 106 Career Wins – ALL in the American League!

He’s no “Ace”, but he will eat up Innings and would be a proven Veteran SP who could be a Solid #3 or #4 Starter in our Rotation next year.

AJ Burnett could be the second coming of “American Idle” Carl Pavano (look at how many times in his career he’s pitched 200+ Innings in a Season – AND – he’s been on the DL a number of times already).

Derek Lowe’s better days are behind him and he has enjoyed his most recent success in the NL’s “Mild, Mild West”.

I don’t think Jon Garland would command the type of annual dough I’ve been reading about (for AJ & D. Lowe) and that is why I’ve been surprised that not too many people here have been mentioning him as a very viable – even solid – option as one of our 2 possible FA SP pickups this off season. (My personal preference would be CC – AND – Jon Garland).

Is it me, or have I missed something about Jon Garland that would make him such a “Non-Entity” in the discussions on this board to date?

i cant believe the rays threw away a 7-0 lead, if they dont win tomorrow they will be in some serious “stuff” lol

he’s not going to do anything.

when a pitcher is starting out and he pitches 100-150 innings experts recomend a 30 pitch increase per year.joba pitched 100 innings so next year he should be stopped at 130 maximum.

    i don’t see this happening.

the yankees need to make him the 5th starter and make sure in 2009 he is capped at 130,2010 at 160,2011 at 190 and then he should be ok.

joba has a chance to be a great pitcher.i hope the yankees don’t risk his future.

    Mel,

Thanks for clearing that up. Knew there was a reason he should have been there!

  81. John October 17th, 2008 at 5:57 pm

The Dodgers and Braves give him an easier road to the playoffs than he would get with the Yankees. He could go to a city of his choice, dominate an inferior league with no pressure, and get a chance to pitch important games. The Cubs and Cardinals, who were also on his list, offer him a chance to win.

We are currently a 3rd place team in our division and the two teams in front of us are battling out a heated series as we speak. We’re living off our reputation. We no longer offer players the best chance to win.

George and Jerry belong in the sentence that starts:

Owners of 2 iconic American professional teams with multiple championships between them met today in Tampa.

Sadly bringing success to your franchise and city does not provide a shield against random attacks of disrespect from people who have accomplished little in comparison.

  84. mel October 17th, 2008 at 5:59 pm

LOL, Ed. Why not send Yogi, too?

I loved the suggestion the other day that they send Yogi to California to see CC.

As if it the Yankees were that desperate. As if it were dignified for a HOF octagenarian to get on a plane and fly cross-country and beg a man young enough to be his grandson to come play for the Yankees.

Don’t know if they were kidding, but I thought it was funny nonetheless.

  85. James 3D October 17th, 2008 at 5:59 pm

If Hughes and Kennedy is all it takes for Peavy, Cashman will do it in a heartbeat. I don’t think he’d include Jackson, Melancon, Cano etc. in the deal as well.

The problem is not the package, its his willingness to come East.

This should show us that the organization is NOT optimistic about CC signing here for them to seriously involve themselves in the Peavy discussion before they even have a chance to talk to CC.

  86. AJ YANKS October 17th, 2008 at 6:02 pm

    mel,

I really don’t think they are going to force CC to come here. They will see early on how amenable he is to coming here. If they determine that he really doesn’t want to come here and really does prefer the West/NL, they won’t even bother staying in to drive up the price. They will probably then shift their attention to Burnett.

  87. mel October 17th, 2008 at 6:02 pm

    John,

Someone’s going to want our money. Hard times are around the corner for teams.

    So far we have:

    Wang
    Joba (kinda)
    Andy (sorta)
    Hughes (maybe)

Only got 1-2 slots there for the FA. Who wants the dough? CC? AJ? Moose? These guys better not richard around too much, Cash & Co. won’t extend offers for very long.

I was only half serious when I suggested Chipper the other day because a friend who lives in ATL told me the Braves GM said they needed an OF with a little power and he used Nady as an example of the kind of player they would be looking for. I asked what would it take to get Chipper- Nady + what?

i don’t see the yankees trading nady who has a cheap contract for chipper who makes probably 18 million a year and is not a real first baseman.they would create a hole in the outfield and a huge payroll increase before any pitchers are signed.chipper is always on the dl also.

i think they will get the best centerfielder and first baseman they can with the highest obp they can get with trading their second tier prospects like kennedy, rasner and others while trying to keep hughes, jackson, montero and spend on pitching.

if they can get a great young first baseman, centerfielder, pitcher by trading, hughes, cano and their top tier prospects they might consider it but they don’t do it for older players, jmo.

Yogi would be great going with them to Alabama. I bet he would use the words “join the Yanks and you will be my god-grandson”. :)

  90. Ed - looking forward to 2009 October 17th, 2008 at 6:05 pm

If Hughes and Kennedy is all it takes for Peavy, Cashman will do it in a heartbeat. I don’t think he’d include Jackson, Melancon, Cano etc. in the deal as well.

Towers and Cashman are BFF. If Towers takes Kennedy and Cabrera for Peavy, then all hail Cashman for being a BFF with Towers.

  91. MooseCall October 17th, 2008 at 6:06 pm

    2009 rotation:

    Wang

    Moose

  92. mel October 17th, 2008 at 6:06 pm

I was scoffing at the suggestion. But I wonder how many godsons Yogi has?

    Reggie? Alex? Carl?

    :)

  93. Ed - looking forward to 2009 October 17th, 2008 at 6:09 pm

    Mel -

speaking of Reggie, he should definitely take care of Peavy. #44 is retired for Reggie, if Jackson went to tell Peavy that the Yanks will unretire #44 for him with Jackson’s permission. He should be honored that they unretired #44 just for him. that’s a big convincing, right? :)

  94. Red Dragons October 17th, 2008 at 6:11 pm

Burnett is probably the only one who will take our money. But the question is, do we really want to invest $18 million for 5 years in a 32 yr old pitcher who has only thrown 200 innings twice and has awful numbers against everyone outside BOS and TB?

Quite a big risk and doesn’t guarantee anything.

  95. mel October 17th, 2008 at 6:11 pm

HaHa. If you care about that kind of stuff.

  96. Doreen October 17th, 2008 at 6:12 pm

Just speaking from personal experience, my brother went to San Diego out of college about 20 years ago. He loved it there, still loves it there. It’s a wonderful place to live.

So, Peavy is now faced with the possibility of leaving the only team he’s ever pitched for and a city that people love to live in. It’s really not that much of a stretch to believe that if he HAS to be traded, he’d want something to remain familiar – the league he pitches in. He’d have to make the fewest adjustments, as far as learning hitters, parks, etc., if he stays in the same league. Some guys don’t want that additional challenge, and that’s really okay. It doesn’t make him less of a pitcher or less of a competitor. The ball is in his court (nt clause) – and it’s there for a reason.

But it behooves the Yankees to at least ask what it would take. That doesn’t necessarily mean that they are in “serious” discussions. The Yankees need to keep all their options open right now in case one or some of them don’t pan out. It would be negligent of them if a pitcher of the quality of a Peavy is made available and they didn’t at least ask what it would take to get him.

Right now, everything that is written is conjecture. I’m not getting too excited or upset about any of it. Well, most of it, anyway. (DON’T TRADE JACKSON! don’t trade hughes.)

  97. Doreen October 17th, 2008 at 6:14 pm

    John -

The Yankees no longer offer the only chance to win. But, they still have a committed front office and an owner who will spend money when necessary. But, yeah, there are a few more options out there right now for a player who is not all that comfortable with the bright lights in the Big City.

  98. you gotta have faith(MOOSE FOR PRESIDENT!)(hopefully the rays kick red sox butt) October 17th, 2008 at 6:15 pm

come on Peavy give me a break, you play for the freaken padres

you’re gonna reject a chance to come to the ny yankees, with a lights out bullpen and a brand spanking new ballpark?

just to stay in the NL and play for who?

  99. MO 42 October 17th, 2008 at 6:15 pm

You can’t operate with the mindset of “if we don’t get him Boston will!!!”.

Thats what got us into this mess to begin with, we felt we always had to have the shiny new toy (even a 2nd rate one like Burnett) to keep him away from our rivals.

Cashman didn’t balk when it looked like Santana was going to the Red Sox (remember when it looked like it was really going to happen that Monday night after the Pats/Ravens game last winter?), so I doubt he is going to panic of Burnett goes to Boston.

  100. mel October 17th, 2008 at 6:16 pm

    Doreen,

Where’s the the Jackson love coming from? You know we’re not talking Reggie and the Austin is not part of the Jackson 5 right?

Just kidding. Did you see him play in Trenton? I’ve heard that he’s made some spectacular plays. You should check out Mike Ashmore’s Trenton blog. Cashman gave him some really nice thoughts on Austin. About how he he sat him down in NY and told him to keep plugging away, how they had their eye on him.

  101. mel October 17th, 2008 at 6:22 pm

I think people underestimate how much the players want to play with Burnett and how much they don’t want to face him. 5 times was 5 times too many this season. But AJ was a good soldier and went out did his job, even though it killed his soul to do it.

I’m generally not in favor of blocking moves (all together now, Gagne!), but I’m all for this one.

And who’s saying Boston doesn’t need pitching? No Schilling. Wakefield can’t pitch until he’s 50. Buccholz looks like he’s back on track, though.

  102. freddy k October 17th, 2008 at 6:22 pm

Peavy is about as southern a guy as you can get, I doubt he would be comfortable at all in any East Coast city.

He is smart for staying in the NL where one pitcher can put a team over the top (see what Sabathia did for MIL). Thats the the Cardinals, Astros, and Braves came into his thinking… those teams have all had playoff success the past few years and an ace pitcher could legitimatize them.

  103. Doreen October 17th, 2008 at 6:24 pm

Not everyone wants to play in NY. It’s really that simple.

  104. bru October 17th, 2008 at 6:25 pm

these older pitchers never work out.sabathia, burnett is asking for trouble.

you might get a few good years out of them at best.

you have to get pitchers that had 1 or 2 good years and are about to take off and are slightly under the radar.

take a look at the whip numbers and hits per innings pitched and you will find many pitchers that are not in the spotlight.
they won’t cost as much money.

i wouldn’t mind sabathia but they should also try to sign and or trade for a few more younger pitchers that they might be able to get without giving up top prospects, pitchers like guthrie,Jesse Litsch ,Shaun Marcum ,Dustin McGowan ,David Purcey ,John Danks ,Gavin Floyd ,Zack Greinke ,Jair Jurrjens ,Ricky Nolasco ,Scott Olsen .

i know most of these pitchers will be impossible to get but if we can sign one through fa and trade for 2 similar type pitchers with wang, joba, hughes we will be set for years.

  105. ray (sox fan) October 17th, 2008 at 6:27 pm

“But AJ was a good soldier and went out did his job, even though it killed his soul to do it.”

Mel, I think in all honesty Burnett is playing both sides of the candle so to speak. It has been communicated in several Boston circles that Burnett would like to pitch in Boston.

If he gets New York and Boston in a bidding war for his services then he is the winner.

  106. Red Dragons October 17th, 2008 at 6:27 pm

    mel,

Players recommend other players to management all the time.

Posada, A-Rod, Abreu, and Cano all endorsed Santana last year, Posada going as far as saying they need a #1 and he wants him badly.

A-Rod asked them to sign Mike Cameron for CF last year. Rivera lobbied them to bring back Gordon in 05.

I doubt Cashman takes their recommendation seriously. Unless Jeter goes to them, I don’t think they will seriously listen. They probably view Posada the same way they view Hank— just hot air. Cashman is very stubborn in that regard, he wants the buck to stop with him with no outside influence.

  107. t-rock October 17th, 2008 at 6:29 pm

If we don’t get CC, we have no choice but to get Burnett whether we like it or not. Where are we going to get any pitching from? Burnett has a ton of red flags but we have our hands tied. He is better than Lowe/Garland, but is still 2nd tier.

We are not going into the new stadium with Wang-Pettitte-Joba-Hughes-Kennedy as our rotation.

Burnett will be here if we don’t get CC. Cashman will reluctantly overpay for him.

  108. mel October 17th, 2008 at 6:29 pm

    bru,

You idea is good. I could go with out a major FA signing as well, but Yankee fans in general aren’t patient enough.

Marcum and McGowan are injured. One of them’s out for next season. Toronto’s never going to trade pitching to us.

From what I understand Nolasco is very good. Don’t see that one happening.

Zach couldn’t handle KC, how’s he going to handle NYC?

Danks and Floyd are part of CWS young core, don’t see that one happening either.

I’ve changed the terms a little.

I get to hit and run most of the time so I don’t get to read all of the fine print. I don’t know when and where the Peavy interest started but there is obviously a lot of it.

For everybody. Please give me a list of the FA players/player trades you would get if you had the decision, and rank order them. But here’s the catch. You are only allowed two transactions. In terms of trades, you don’t have to pick Yankee players you would trade. I’m just interested in posters’ wish lists if you could only add two new players to the roster.

    Just curious.

” But AJ was a good soldier and went out did his job, even though it killed his soul to do it.”

Yup AJ is right up there with all of the Epic heros of lore. Struggling with the existential angst of having to pitch for the team he chose to sign with because they gave him the most money. Very much like King Arthur….

lol. Love Olney’s “insider” stuff, but the last paragraph really backs off the claim that Jake’s friends said he doesn’t want to pitch in NY:

The Yankees, who will seek at least two starting pitchers this offseason, have discussed Peavy internally, but Peavy has been open in his preference to play in the National League — where he can hit and run the bases — and some friends of the pitcher wonder if he would like playing in New York.

    Hughes for Grienke and DeJesus

  118. Vrsce October 17th, 2008 at 6:39 pm

According to the Star Ledger, the New York Yankees are also interested in acquiring Peavy. A source close to the Yankees told the newspaper the team thinks the Padres are close to a deal with another club. The source also told the Star Ledger that the Yankees think they could put together an appealing package for the Padres. Last winter, the Yankees debated parting with young pitchers Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy in a potential deal for then Minnesota Twins’ ace Johan Santana. It is possible one or both of those names could be used by the Yankees in a deal for Peavy.

  119. vtred October 17th, 2008 at 6:40 pm

Some friends “wonder” if Peavy will like pitching in NY?

I give Olney credit, he used 10 words to tell us absolutely nothing.

  120. mel October 17th, 2008 at 6:40 pm

Yes, we are the king of hamstring ‘chips.

    ray,

I’d like to see the Yankees lock up AJ to a shorter deal than CC and then offer CC a nice, not too fat contract.

That way we can have our cake and eat it, too. :)

  121. Ed - looking forward to 2009 October 17th, 2008 at 6:41 pm

The Yankees’ interest in Teixeira seems to make clear that longtime Yankee Jason Giambi will not be brought back. Even if the Yankees fail to sign Teixeira, they have determined they want to upgrade their defense at first base.

The Yankees also want to upgrade in center field, though there are no great free-agent options, which may lead them to pursue trades. Pitching prospects Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy presumably won’t have the same untouchable status they had last winter.

    mel,

That contradicted what Heyman said about Lowe disliking the laid back lifestyle out West and how he was dying to come back East. Heyman has been saying this for months.

Funny how these experts’ stories differ from eachother.

  123. Neil October 17th, 2008 at 6:44 pm

    Trisha ;

    Wish list . . .

FA’s – Sabathia, or Burnett, and Teixeira.

Trades – One of Ty Wigginton, Bill Hall, or Ryan Freel (if healthy) as a utility man.

  124. Tank October 17th, 2008 at 6:44 pm

    E-rod,

It’s all open to interpretation. Even on our end!

Truth be told, agents and “friends” drop little nuggets all the time. The goal is to really muddle the picture so they can get the best deal.

No biggie. Hopefully we’ll have some nice gifts under the tree. :)

There is absolutely no reason why Ian Kennedy or Melky Cabrera should be considered untouchable status along with several players still on the 40-man roster. A year has changed things for them and they should be part of any trade package.
The old adage applies . . . nothing for nothing in this world.

  135. Sea Net October 17th, 2008 at 6:56 pm

You can’t get more than a stop gap without Hughes, IMO.

The problem with our prospects is that there is Hughes and there is everyone else. We have no 2nd tier guys. The drop off from Hughes to Kennedy is dramatic. Jackson, Melancon etc. don’t have singular value even if they are combined (as we saw with the Santana trade), they need to be paired with a Hughes in order to get someone big.

For example, we don’t have what it takes to get a Kemp. Hughes is too much to give up for him and Kennedy isin’t anywhere close to enough to get him.

Now, if Votto, Loney, Gonzalez, Bruce etc. is involved, a top flight young position player, then its fair to trade Hughes. But if you want guys just below that level (Kemp, Ethier, McLouth, etc.) then you have to overpay.

Our farm is very imbalanced right now. In a few years (assuming everything goes right), we’ll have plenty of ammunition to make trades that teams like the Braves and Dodgers can, but we don’t have that ability right now.

  136. bru October 17th, 2008 at 6:59 pm

sign sabathia, dempster.see if we can trade cano for adrian gonzalez, throw kennedy or another prospect to get it done, find a second baseman or move jeter to second and find a shortstop.lineup will be,

    damon
    jeter
    gonzalez
    arod
    matsui
    nady
    posada
    gardner
    new second baseman

    pitching will be
    sabathia
    wang
    dempster
    pettitte/mussina
    joba

  137. Tom October 17th, 2008 at 6:59 pm

It seems that the Yankees intend on having a payroll bigger than the 180 million Cashman claimed they would have hext year.

  138. bru October 17th, 2008 at 7:03 pm

hughes can split time with joba and spot start for injuries

  139. bru October 17th, 2008 at 7:07 pm

this can easily be done without giving up the top prospects.

    hughes,ajax,melancon,brackman,montero can be kept.

the key is we need to sign 2 pitchers, sabathia, dempster.this makes it so we won’t have to trade for pitching.

i would love to get gonzalez and i think cano and a prospect or two can get it done.

gonzalez put up arod numbers this year,it fixes first base, same age as cano, cheap contract.

    play gardner in centerfield.

  140. bru October 17th, 2008 at 7:16 pm

i hear the padres wan’t two pitchers and a near ml ready centerfielder.

no way the yankees should do this.it will cost hughes,kennedy,gardner/melky/ajax.

way to much.if hughes turns into a great pitcher wich i think he wii the yankees get burned.
