The Sunday Links
The Sunday Baseball Beat looks at the two stars of the free-agent market, CC Sabathia and Manny Ramirez.
Joba Chamberlain was arrested for DWI.
Bernie Williams lectured about the relationship between music and baseball. Brian Heyman has the story.

Not sure what this means, but Derek Lowe has his house up for sale in Los Angeles. It’s yours for $5.7 million. Thanks to reader Chris for the tip on that.
If you haven’t heard of Hulu.com, it’s an easy way to get a wide range of television shows and movies on line. They have Pride Of The Yankees available.
This video from Atom.com is pretty funny.
Game 7 in the ALCS tonight. It’ll be Jon Lester against Matt Garza.

Wasn’t around yesterday but it’s laughable anyone would try to defend Joba’s deplorable act. There’s no defending a drunkard that’s riding around with an open bottle in my opinion.
Lotsa links for a random day in October when the Yankees aren’t playing. Can’t stop making news, that bunch
Hulu rocks. But there are other sites with even more stuff online than Hulu. Though they are probably illegal.
Joba, Joba, Joba.
Lester vs. Garza? **gulp**
Ray,
Have to agree with you on Joba. What’s really at issue is does this kid have a drinking problem, a decision making problem, or both.
After what went on with Jim Leyritz you would think people on this team would be hyper sensitive. Though in truth, everyone knows someone hurt by DUI and yet some people just don’t get it. Truly disapointing.
Michael Kay is at the vanguard of the NY Press with his relentless anti-Manny position. On ESPN’s “Sportswiters” this morning, Kay, in his concluding remarks likened Manny to Pacman Jones. On the other hand, Larry Bowa, who some believe is and should be the leading candidate to replace Meacham and do for Cano what Girardi and his staff could not do last year, was quoted in the LA Times today as follows:
“For third base coach Larry Bowa, the most important decision regarding the kids is the decision the club will make on the 36-year-old Ramirez.
“Real crucial,” Bowa said. “He’s helped the maturation of these young kids. I’m not saying that if he doesn’t come back they won’t mature. But if he doesn’t come, you better get somebody to help the maturation along. You saw what he did to help these kids in the last two months.”
Does this sound like someone who plans to remain or opt out for something bigger and better?
Kay, with his rather sudden emergence beyond that of simply being a Yankee “YES” man, may be placing himself in a rather tenuous position “if” the Yankees do the “unthinkable”. In my opinion, he is walking a very fine line, and I assume he knows it.
Raymag—–
Pretty judgemental stuff pal. I haven’t seen anyone defending a DWI, but one arrest does not a “drunkard” make. I take it you have never gotten behind the wheel after having had a drink?
I would like to know his blood alcohol level before determining just how egregious an offense this was.
We were all 23 years old at one time and made mistakes. Given everything Joba’s been through in his life and the way he’s handled it, the expectations were high that he’s mature beyond his years. Obviosly, that’s not the case.
It’s disappointing in that he’s been knocked off that pedistal. Even worse, he put people’s life in danger. He’ll receive a deserving kick in the rear for his actions. No one should feel sorry for him.
But given how he’s handled everything else in his life, he’ll come through it.
Joba will quickly find that as quickly as he rose to the top, is as quickly as he can fall…
Joba has plenty of endorsements already and a bright future…but his sponsors can’t be happy with his actions last night
“Real crucial,†Bowa said. “He’s helped the maturation of these young kids. I’m not saying that if he doesn’t come back they won’t mature. But if he doesn’t come, you better get somebody to help the maturation along. You saw what he did to help these kids in the last two months.â€
Of course Manny would be on his best behavior with the Dodgers. He is getting ready to negotiate what he hopes will be a long-term record setting contract and needs to impress teams with his attitude. Once he gets that contract, it is quite possible he will go back to being “Manny.”
At this point all that is there are allegations. It hasn’t even reached the dignity of charges being filed and Joba is labelled a drunkard and damned by many. We have a process in this country which should be followed by all. Conclusions should not be reached before all the facts are in. This is not a “star chamber” state. Reserve judgment until the matter is resolved.
DUI is different from DWI. DUI is a lesser charge and while its stupidity to drive after drinking, we don’t know any of the facts of what happened.
The open container could be significant or could be minor.
That isn’t defending him but the “moral outrage” against a kid who made a stupid error in judgement before we know anything about it is wrong as well.
What we know is that he was stopped for speeding. That means that he was driving too fast, but we don’t know how fast, how far over the speed limit.
They smelled alcohol and he had an open container on the passenger seat. No indication of the level of alcohol in his blood stream, though given the DUI indicates that it was lower than would be given to someone with the DWI charge. That could be under the legal limit or just at the limit.
It was stupid to do. Plenty of kids do stupid things. Hopefully this is a learning experience, and no one was hurt.
86, I here you on “drunkard” stuff, but he had an open container so BAC really isnt an issue. He’s young and made a big mistake and will have a price to pay. Hopefully as a person he sees the big picture of how dangerous driving drunk can be.
DWI or DUI are defined differently in every state. I’m from PA. We have no charge called DWI, we only have DUI (driving under the influence). My understanding is DWI is the same. Either way, it’s splitting hairs. The kid made a really bad choice, hopefully he sees it, accepts it, and doesnt do it again.
“Though in truth, everyone knows someone hurt by DUI and yet some people just don’t get it. Truly disapointing.”
Also in truth, we all also know people who constantly drink and drive with no consequences. It is this behavior that allows people to think that they can get away with it. The “it won’t happen to me, I won’t get caught” thinking.
Buckner, the “open container” can be anything from an empty beer can to a bottle with the seal cracked to a half empty bottle of booze. The law on that is extremely liberal in its application.
According to the report he was DUI, which means he wasn’t what is legally termed drunk either. There is a difference.
Saw an interesting thing about Manny — a Chicago writer suggesting the Cubs could have a major interest in him IF they could move the contract of Alfonso Soriano.
How about bringing Soriano home in a trade to play RF? His arm is strong enough and he certainly would add athleticism. Even with a sorta down year he hit 29 HR and stole 19 bases.
The negatives are low obp, high strikeouts and a big contract. 6 years, $ 106 M for a guy who will be 33 in January is a lot.
What do you guys think? Probably won’t cost a lot in prospects if the Cubs are really looking for move those $$$
CC is a straight-arrow guy. He will not follow the money, most unlike Manny. CC’s comfortablility level with NY is unknown at best, but it would appear it’s not particularly high. If the Yankees focus mainly on throwing the big bucks at him, I think he’ll pass. My sense is there is a good chance he’ll continue on as Brewer for much less money. If not, it’s LA or Anaheim, the latter only if Teixiera is not signed.
Unfortunately, Cashman and the Steinees have to be realistic. That means Burnett will be the main focus; his talent notwithstanding, he is a necessary risk (possible (hopefully not) Pavano-like consequences) which must be assumed.
As to Manny, Pete is correct as to when he will be signed. However, McCourt will not pull the trigger for big bucks for many reasons. He is still reeling from the Jones, Pierre, Schmidt fiascos. Most significantly, it seems that he has, and always has had, financial problems; he will “appear” to be a player so he can maintain his mantra “it takes two to tango”.
Where will Manny hang his hat? I see only two teams willing to really get involved and we know where they are.
I’m not posting to debate the application of the charge, I’m saying he made a mistake (the level of mistake is still up in the air) and hopefully he understands the gravity of it and doesn’t look at it as some other athletes have in the past.
86,
Pal please spare me the indignity. The jerk was caught speeding and had an open container on his front seat and was arrested for DUI which means he showed signs of drinking.
Drinking and driving isn’t a mistake, it’s an act of stupidity. I’ve had a drink and drove but I don’t get behind the wheel and drive reckless with open containers after I have a drink.
Even if his blood level is under the limit there’ll be no way to tell how many drinks he actually had due to his size.
As I said befoe it’s laughable that anyone would try to defend a guy driving reckless with an open container on his passengr seat.
Soriano??? Bad attitude, horrible in the field, horrible in the clutch…would be an absolutely horrible influence on Cano. He would, however, do nice stats….the back of the bubblegum card would look “swell”. I would seriously doubt that it would even be subject to discussion amongst the brass.
maybe it was a different joba chamberlain?
Guys, our ace made a mistake.
Let him do his community service or serve his week in jail and move on.
In a quick check for Nebraska DUI DWI, there is a difference. DWI is when the BAC is at or over the limit (.08), DUI is under the limit which can be anywhere from .02-.07.
There is a distinction in Nebraska.
Were the Cubs to have been sold to Cuban, they definitely would be the lead player for Manny. Money would be no object.
I think its good that he pulled over for the cops and didn’t try and run from then and cause a police chase.
That showed maturity, IMO.
“I think its good that he pulled over for the cops and didn’t try and run from then and cause a police chase.
That showed maturity, IMO.”
Absolutely. It also showed maturity that he didn’t have a crack pipe in his mouth, or a heroin needle hanging off of his arm when the cop walked up to his door. He showed further maturity by not starting a gun battle with cops when pulled over.
Alright…seriously…
What are the chances the Rays can pull off one more win behind the very emotional Matt Garza and their imploded bullpen?
C’mon Rays, don’t do this to us.
An outfield, even if just sometimes, of Matsui, Damon, and Soriano would be absolutely brutal. Nady can’t cover for more than one of those three. Discard Soriano idea.
b61 –
I think its good that he pulled over for the cops and didn’t try and run from then and cause a police chase.
That showed maturity, IMO.
————————————-
That’s not maturity. It’s a teensy-weensy moment of self preservation in the midst of a larger act of utterly immature stupidity.
Flee from cops = death wish, sometimes fulfilled.
Not sure what Joba was thinking about, but if he wants his Yankee career to continue, he will get his act together.
TB is done. Stick a fork in them. No way Lester pitches poorly two times in a row.
Get ready for another BOS World Series win because I don’t see PHI getting past them either.
RAY—- You response post was perfectly okay with me. Less judgemental and no unwarranted name calling.
Joba is guilty of stupidity to some degree and time will tell if this is a one time thing. I hope it is for everyone’s sake.
Macadamia nut makes valid points that DUI is a lesser offense than DWI and that “open container” can mean a lot of things.
That said, blood alcohol level does allow you to conclude how much someone has had to drink. That’s why it’s a percentage. A guy Joba’s size (225 ish) can drink about twice as much as someone who weighs under 150 and get the same level on a blood alcohol test.
It is not defending someone to put the allegations in their proper context and consider the varying degrees of law breaking that may have taken place. It’s called thinking.
For whatever reason too many athletes feel exempt from DUI issues until they happen. Too many don’t learn from Leyritz fiascos until it’s too late.
Joba Chamberlain is not yet arbitration eligible and will not get the extra Madison Avenue money he might have got with the economy notwithstanding.
He won’t be seen much in 2009 at the finer NYC eateries.
Get that man a drink.
Apropo of entirely nothing but, doesn’t something appear odd with the ALCS.Little things like the announcers talking about games 6 and 7 in Tampa…..when the Rays were up7 in game 5? Probably nothing though.
JR,
Rays have no shot. They could only muster 4 hits and 2 runs off a banged up Beckett and didn’t get a hit for 4 innings off their bullpen last night. They are holding the bat tighter.
Garza may be the last pitcher you want in this spot. He is a hot head, and I could see him melting down early. Lester isin’t going to have 2 bad outings in a row.
Only shot for TB is if they get 3-4 quick runs within the first 2 innings. If Boston strikes first, Lester will take them home.
Ok he was drinking and driving….next topic….do we want to talk baseball or get into personal issues. Let’s figure How they Yanks stop embarrassing thmeselves and us! I can’t take another Red Sox title….Tampa and GArza can do it…Hopefully the Rays will be loose tonight. I think they will be….
So are they Yanks gonna have any impact young position players the next few years>
Sign Tex and CC!! Ynks have passed on a lot of high priced free agents the last few years…..(I am including the Sanatana trade and other big name trades) A lot of those deals worked out…Beltran, Santana, CC, Danny Haren to name a few….Even the Sox giving Drew 75 mil is working out well…..Time to import some new blood….expensive or not….
Where is Donnie when you need him?
How many Sidney Ponson jokes/references were made last night?
Matt Garza has the weight of red sox haters everywhere on his shoulders – let’s hope his psyche can handle it.
As long as he still throws 99 after this incident, everything will be fine. This will be a non story in a few days.
Let’s trade ARod for Soriano… you know to come full circle.
i’d rather just sign manny
It was foolish of anyone to think a team would respond after blowing a 7 run lead with 7 outs to go.
The baseball gods do not grant 2nd chances after that. You have a chance to close them out and you do not. Couldn’t have had it setup more perfectly– 7 run lead, 7 outs to go to a dead team and you blow it. WS birth handed to you on a silver platter.
Tampa is done. Their performance yesterday vs. Beckett proved it. They won’t hit Lester.
1. Funny video, Pete. Let’s keep those pests from Boston away.
2. Joba clearly made a mistake. He’s lucky no one was injured due to it. If’s he’s smart, he’ll learn from it and never fall prey to it again.
3. I was thinking of Manny and the Yanks, when I remembered that line from “Hamlet” – “The Devil may take a pleasing shape” I think it goes. I think Manny was on before unseen best behavior in LA. Let the buyer beware.
This is not the first time Derek Lowe has put his house up for sale, he’s done it a few times while in L.A.. How I know this I don’t really know, lol. Actually I read about it in those celebrity real estate blogs.
I don’t think Lincoln Nebraska has any cabs… otherwise Joba would have taken one.
This isin’t NY where you can hail one at any hour on the street, especially one that will take him to a residential area outside city limits (like asking a NYC cab to take him to White Plains).
So, he gets a pass.
In NEbraska there’s a minimum 7 day jail sentence for DUI.
“The baseball gods do not grant 2nd chances after that. ”
All right, toms river, a fellow believer in the baseball gods. I couldn’t agree more with your assessment.
1. I absolutely believe that the Rays rally and take tonight’s game. I can tell you this is just a gut feeling and not having anything to do with how much I “hate” the Sux and want them to go down in flames. Truth.
2. I refuse to react to the Joba news any differently from the way I react to reading about any DUI: I think it is irresponsible; I hope that the penalty is harsh enough to make sure the person learns a good lesson; I hope they don’t repeat the same thing twice; I thank God nobody was injured.
I do not drink so it is a phenomenon that I really don’t understand the need for. But I realize that drinking is common in society. I’ve been at enough holiday parties to believe that there are a lot of people who get behind the wheel of a car and by the grace of God alone make it home without getting stopped or hurting someone.
Anyway, people make mistakes all the time. Joba made a mistake. I think back on some of my mistakes that did not end up costing and realize it’s purely because I got away with them! The day after we graduated high school, a group of us rode around drinking beer. The guys picked us up, and they had a six pack of some disgusting stuff and they handed us a can in the back seat, and we sipped it. First time I had tasted beer in my life. I really didn’t want it, but I did it. And after one sip I was done because it was so disgusting. But if we had gotten stopped at that moment, I would have been dead (my father would have done the deed, so it wouldn’t have gotten as far as court!)
I have no way of knowing how much beer the guys had before they picked us up, so I don’t know if there would have been a DUI or DWI. But we sure would have had open containers, and I sure would have had beer on my breath I think because you can smell that stuff a mile away, one sip or one thousand.
I would never stop rooting for Joba or anyone else on one DUI/DWI. I realize people make mistakes. Thank God this one didn’t harm anyone other than Joba.
It will be a shame if the Rays don’t win because the Sux are NOT the better team, not even close. The Sux are obviously the model franchise in baseball but on the field they are NOT on the same level as the Rays.
Secondly, stop chastising Joba. Kids make mistakes. Last time I checked, DUIs dont stop you from throwing 100 MPH which is what Joba does. He will learn from this. He is still the future of our franchise, moreso than any other young player we have and its not even close. He made a mistake, he’ll serve his community service and/or week in jail, and we’ll move on from this.
How about this one? No way the baseball gods let a team who has been the scourge of the league and worked without money and real resources make it to the brink of greatness and not finish the job? Or do you only believe in baseball gods who think your way?
Absolutes are a riot – if you really mean them as absolutes. I know I have used them before in terms of the baseball gods and have been wrong, so I then have to acknowledge I really don’t know how the baseball gods think!
Absolutes are right on the money – until they are not. I seem to remember an absolute that went this way: No way a team down 3-0 in the ALCS is ever going to come back and win it all.
Any of your “no ways” regarding the Rays winning tonight continue to strike me with the same degree of “truth” as the above statement. Here’s a maxim that actually does have some truth to it: that’s why they play the games.
GO RAYS!
Manny is exactly what the cubs need. he’s the curse-breaker!
but if i were a player i wouldn’t want to play for the cubs or sweet lou.
tino for yankees manager 9!
I will be sick if Boston advances after being down 3-1 again. The Rays need to get their act together at the beginning of the game and get some quick runs.
Whoever advances, and I hope it’s not Boston, I think will have the edge over the Philly’s just like last year with all the time off in between series.
Garza needs to go atleast 7 innings of 2 run ball. I think Lester will match that atleast and then the bullpens will decide it I think. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look good for the Rays.
Trisha, I hope your prediction is right in that the Rays ultimately succeed tonight.
Buster Olney:
I want the Rays to succeed tonight, but I’m only holding out a sliver of hope, to be honest. The Red Sox sure know how to play with their backs up against the wall, and Lester is a solid pitcher to have on the mound. I don’t have as much faith in Garza. I think the Rays bullpen right now is not steady. Boston’s has been good, but they can turn on a dime.
I just know it won’t be fun if the Sox prevail. It wouldn’t matter quite so much if they didn’t already get so much hype – but they’re bound to be raised even higher.
If they do win and go on to face the Phillies, my hope is the knowledge that the Phillies are not the Rockies – they’re a much tougher team; and Philadelphia is not Denver – the fans are a lot grittier.
Where is BBB (Free Joba!) this morning? BBB come back and post!
JR Yanks, I hope I am right also.
Joba says
“I want to apologize to the New York Yankees and the fans for an error in judgment and for putting myself in a difficult situation. I intend to properly resolve this situation, and do not intend to be in such a situation again. My goal is to focus on pitching for the Yankees in the 2009 season.”
Arizona police should have arrested Hughes after his outing last night, impersonating a major league pitcher.
Anyone defending drinking and driving as being a mistake of youth must have never had anyone in their life affected by it. It isn’t a mistake to drive after or while drinking, it’s an absolute decision you make. Not a mistake. You know you’re drinking and you know you’re driving.
And there’s no defense of it.
Ed,
If that’s true, that makes me sick.
Paying 30-40% to entice a guy to play here is fiscally irresponsible.
Offer a fat contract and let him decide, but don’t be ridiculous about it.
Just like marrying for money. There might be a nice honeymoon, but doesn’t end well.
Yes, how dare Hughes be falliable and human too.
Off with his head too!

Let’s trade ARod for Soriano… you know to come full circle.
Maybe you want to include Aramis Ramirez also.
A typical NY media scandal rag with typical BS headlnes. This article’s no different tha some of the idiotic remarks made about the amberlain incident.

Ed,
If that’s true, that makes me sick.
Paying 30-40% to entice a guy to play here is fiscally irresponsible.
Not to mention the extra we’d owe for going over the luxury tax limit, of 162 million for 2009 at 40% !!!!
“mel
Paying 30-40% to entice a guy to play here is fiscally irresponsible. Offer a fat contract and let him decide”
CC says, cut out the fat jokes.
As much as I’d like to see the Yankees bring a young lefty ace in Sabathia to the Bronx, I really don’t see it happening. Look at his options.
Dodgers: Manny played for them for free and Andruw Jones was on DL, and is untradeable as is Pierre. If they bring back Manny, and Furcal, plus pick up Penny’s option, while losing Maddux and Lowe, it doesn’t make much sense to have 5 outfielders. Therefore I don’t see Manny getting the best offer with the Dodgers. If Penny isn’t resigned, as well as Lowe, Maddux, the Dodgers might make a play for Sabathia.
Angels: K-Rod probably gone, as well as Anderson, Rivera. Their #1 priority will probably be Teixeira, but if he doesn’t sign with them, they could bring in Sabathia, and trade one of their pitchers for a good first baseman.
Brewers; Ben Sheets and Cameron could be gone, so CC going back there is not out of the question.
Giants: If they sign Sabathia, they’ll have more money tied up in two pitchers than the rest of the team combined. They need offense.
Therefore my guess is that he stays in the NL, with an outside chance of going to the Angels, if they can’t sign
Teixeira.
“falliable and human too.”
This isn’t about being fallible and human. This is about making what could have been a deadly choice and people defending it like he just decided to not return a library book.
CC Sabathia will be a Yankee.
Char – I don’t know that it is as simple as you present it. You know you’re drinking, and you know you’re driving, and so what is your point? That it’s not a “mistake” since you “know” both things? Does that mean someone who has stolen food because they have no money and are extraordinarily hungry has not made a “mistake” since they know they are hungry and they know they are stealing?
Maybe it is more difficult for those of us in the legal profession to slice and dice it the way you did since we know that crimes of intent are not part of what happens when someone does something while under the influence of liquor/drugs if they are so impaired that they lack the element of intent since there is no informed judgment involved. Unless someone decides to commit a crime and says they in order to commit that crime they had to get drunk to do it, the consequences of drinking would not come under the field of “intent” crimes since an impaired person does not have the requisite mental state to form that intent.
Are you being so literal that if someone says “I made a mistake” it can only mean that they need a pencil with an eraser to start over again?
This is one of Webster’s definitions for mistake:
a wrong action or statement proceeding from faulty judgment, inadequate knowledge, or inattention
faulty judgment could certain fit into the circumstances of drinking and driving.
Again, I don’t condone it, but I am not so rigid that I would condemn someone to hell for life for it.
To all Joba apologists -
I too was once a 23 year old and goodness knows I have made more than my share of errors. However putting others potentially at risk raises the stakes – as someone who has lost a relative in a car accident caused by a drunk driver and as someone who has been in a car accident caused by (the other) driver being under the influence where two of my passengers were hurt I can’t just simply say “oh he is only 23 years old”. Joba has enormous gifts – those around him have to ensure that he works through this so that he never ever puts himself or others at risk by this irresponsible behavior.
Thomo – I am so sorry for what you have been through at the hands of drunk drivers. You know in life our reactions to things are all shaped by our own experiences; so I would probably be responding exactly as you are were I am your situation.
I totally applaud your expansiveness and compassion to be able to say what you did in light of your experiences:
those around him have to ensure that he works through this so that he never ever puts himself or others at risk by this irresponsible behavior.
Good for you.
sign sabathia, and another pitcher, trade cano for adrian gonzalez if possible, sign a second baseman or mover jeter there and sign a ss.
keep hughes,ajax,montero.
G-Men over ‘Frisco 24-17 in 3rd.
bru: Isn’t Furcal a FA? Not that it matters. Jeter will never move from SS, unless he is forced to.
I am sure all of you who want us to extend some sympathy to drunk boy were the same ones saying we should have understanding about Bucholtz stealing some laptops in his youth.
Drunk driving can kill….stealing laptops doesn’t.
youk: you have as much class as the team/city you represent.
btw: saw a bumper sticker the other day, which read ‘youk’. Had to wonder to myself, why would anyone want to be a redsox fan.
The truth hurt vinny?
Bucholtz was pounded on this blog for his mistakes.
Guess those people had no class either!
Youk – In the eyes of the law Joba did not have the ability to form intent if his blood alcohol level was over the legal limit; if it wasn’t, then this is a huge temptest in a tea pot.
In the eyes of the law, unless Bucholz was showed to be impaired to the extent that he couldn’t form intent, then he knew what he was doing was wrong. Stealing is definitely a crime of intent. DUI is not.
you didn’t hurt me.
and personally, i couldn’t care less if Bucholtz thugged a few laptops.
For the post to title their article that Joba was Plastered, isn’t fair.
I haven’t read anywhere that he took a breathalyzer or he failed field sobriety tests. All I read was that he was pulled over for speeding, than they smelled alcohol, and saw the open container. The Posts article also doesn’t site the name of the officer who supposedly said this. I Just appears that they took liberties with him being arrested for dui. It also doesn’t state that it is standard procedure for someone being arrested for dui to go to this detox place.
I have to say, it’s ANNOYINGLY amazing to see the Red Sox do this again. If I were betting money, I’d put it on the Sox winning Game 7 tonight.
That’s not to say the Rays don’t have a chance–but if I lost $100 bucks on the Red Sox tonight, I wouldn’t feel bad. Pressure has been on the Rays since Game 5 ended, and they haven’t delivered.
Why the Rays will lose:
The more pressure put on them, the worse they’ve played. This is Game 7.
Oh yeah, and TB has Cliff Floyd. Starting to feel sorry for the guy.
Why the Rays will win:
Maddon will keep his kids cool headed, and will run the bases like a madman.
Joba can pitch in the majors. Bucholz cannot.
Peter Rabbit -
That’s IF they get on base.
I almost don’t want to watch the game….
I won’t watch. I might flip, but I will not sit down and watch! UGH!! It ticks me off so much cause the rays had that game. But their manager who was supposed to be so brilliant blew it!
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/ne.....;type=lgns
Haven’t seen this posted yet
Peter Rabbit-
I will come out and say the Rays have no chance. This is to perfect for the Sox, they won’t lose tonight.
Did you guys see the look on the faces of the Rays players? They are completely lost.
Sigh.
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/ne.....;type=lgns
Yahoo has an article of Joba apologizing
I wonder if Brett Favre called the Colts sometime before the game today to tell them all about the Packers. Someone needs to take away his cell phone.
G-Men win 29-17 while Dallas loses to St. Lousy.
A Rays win makes a complete day.
the unfortunate part is, if the Rays don’t win, i believe they will take it out on the AL East, all of next year.
“…if the Rays don’t win, i believe they will take it out on the AL East, all of next year”
No they won’t. The Rays win or lose will be the typical surprise team that comes out of no where (you see it in every sport ie Cleveland Browns, Rockies, D’backs etc) and is predicted to be a pain for the rest of the league the following year. Only to suck again.
Trevor: check the Rays roster. Then get back to us.
Who cares what they roster is? Better yet you check the Cowboys roster then get back to me.
And while you’re doing that check the Yankees opening day roster.
football and baseball, not the same.
Folks, this could get ugly, I just read that Joba’s blood alchohol level was 2.60.
Oh wait, that was his ERA last season. Never mind.
I actually agree with the theory that the Rays fall back a bit after this.
They won’t win tonight, no chance… This will haunt them at least through the beginning of next season.
Blue Bleeding: what you didn’t mention is that the Giants got a late fluke 2-point safety to cover the spread!
Nice result on a middling effort by Big Blue. I still need to see them do something against a good team.
You do know games aren’t played on paper right? I used two baseball examples. I’ll throw another one at you: the Indians.
Also keep in mind the Rays never beat up on the Yankees this year. Had a losing record (7-11). And it was a “bad year” for them.
Injuries could happen, the mental side is a factor (especially for young teams), players that performed well for you the previous year are MIA the following year etc…
Let’s see how they do next week vs. the Steelers. Hopefully AP will be back. But being 5-1? I’ll take it
I will take 5-1 too, of course, but it’s pretty annoying that the 1 had to be the night I was in Vegas and betting the game with cash. Boooooooooooo.
And boooooooo on that Jets fumble too.
it look like the Jets coaches, took the week off again.
but it’s pretty annoying that the 1 had to be the night I was in Vegas and betting the game with cash. Boooooooooooo.
Eek! Big boo to that! Booooooooooooo.
I am starting to worry about Plax though.
Nick where did you read that? It can get very ugly now. If he has a problem, than he needs to get help.
Oh Nick one thing to keep in mind. I read in one for the articles that the spokesperson didn’ have that info, and said it wouldn’t be released until tomorrow at the hearing. So it could be a load of bs.
Nice stand by the Jets.
jennifer, read my whole post, it was just a joke. Imagine how much Joba would have to drink to get his BAL to 2.60!
It’s physically impossible to have a blood alcohol level of 2.60. You’d probably die at .50 or thereabouts
Oh DUH, well it isn’t a very good joke.
CC is not a Boros client for one very basic reason. He does not follow the money. Tex and Manny are; where the money is, they will go, plain and simple. If the Yankees really want Tex, he will come.
Great idea betting against rays! Then I won’t be sad if sux win.
If I hear the phrase “7 rn lead w 7 outs to go one more time…”
I’ll use the money for BBB (free joba!)’s free joba fund!
Oh duh now I feel really stupid, can I blame it on being exhausted. Read it is impossible to be that drunk. I wasn’t thinking!!
Hah I considered placing a bet too, that’s not a bad idea.
Then at least it won’t be so hard to go to work here in Boston tomorrow…
It’s ok, jennifer. Maybe 2.60 was his blood steak sauce level?
“I want to apologize to the New York Yankees and the fans for an error in judgment and for putting myself in a difficult situation,†Chamberlain said in a statement released by his agent, Randy Hendricks. “I intend to properly resolve this situation, and do not intend to be in such a situation again. My goal is to focus on pitching for the Yankees in the 2009 season.â€
-from a yahoo article
unless he does it again people will forget and or forgive, like giambi
I think you could have a 2.6 BAL if you replaced all of your blood with liquor. I don’t know who’d ever want to do that though.
Jobas a good kid who made a mistake. I’d love to see the people judging him to stand in front of the mirror one time and say they’ve never made a mistake. You cannot say for certain he was driving drunk and you don’t know what the open container was. We have no details of the situation, but nontheless Joba will bounce back because he’s smart and young. Relax.
Prediction: Red Sox 7 – Rays 2
Joba Six Pack-
Sounds like a good prediction to me. I don’t think the Rays have a chance.
And sure, that’s negative, but it helps to accept it now, instead of having to wait until midnight.
if the Rays won this evening, i would be shocked.
the rays are playing too tight right now. a lot of the moves Maddon has or hasn’t made have stung them (how wasn’t shields, Garza, price brought in in game 5? Dioner Navarro on the hit & run was embarrassing). the sox will jump out early on a a Pedroia, Youkilis, or Ortiz home run. TB will answer late on a Longoria or Upton hr and it will be all she wrote
I think that Maddon and the Rays are coming down to earth. I would love for them to beat Boston, but I think that they are beginning the transformation back into a frog/pumpkin/whatever your metaphor. Between overachieving players and strange bullpen decisions by Maddon, who doesn’t have a true closer, they are in trouble. I only hope that they become a frog when they get to play Philly.
I caught some highlights last night (couldn’t change the channel quick enough), and saw some pictures…
The look on the Rays faces? I mean ‘deer in the headlights’, doesn’t begin to describe it. They look lost and beaten.
Maddon just stands there with the same expression. He’s got no idea what to say to his team.
Eight now it’s like watching a movie you already know the ending too.
Tonight’s game is a foregone conclusion.
The Rays winning tonight will be even more of a miracle than the Sox coming back from 7 down with 7 outs left.
I truly believe that.
Perhaps Joba registered .026 which for someone his size is probably two beers
Why was Jerry Jones meeting with George this past week?
I don’t believe this for a second and I have no link or source, but a friend of mine just texted me and said that Jerry Jones is buying the Yanks and it’ll be announced this week. A friend of his in Dallas who’s in the know told him. I told him he’s full of crap and there’s no chance. But is there a chance?
Rather have Jerry Jones than Hank as owner
“This isn’t about being fallible and human. This is about making what could have been a deadly choice and people defending it like he just decided to not return a library book.”
Its about that as much as it is about some people appointing themselves judge, jury and executioner.
I just think the Rays are going to rebound. I can understand why everyone would consider it wishful thinking based on history. But I have to go with my feeling. I’ll say Rays 7-2.
Have to go to a work function at 7 but hopefully I won’t miss too much of the game. Will join up as soon as I can. In the meantime –
GO RAYS!!!
beginning to believe Herm Edwards is a better football coach, then Eric Mangini.
Rays need to score a few runs early.
If the Sox score first, Garza is going to meltdown and Lester will just make them look silly. They’re holding the bat tight as it is.
Really, thats the only way they will win. They need to have a game like 3 or 4 where they score early, allow the pitcher to settle in, and don’t look back. If its a close game, they will melt.
Z: you right. If the Rays don’t get on top early, they can forget it.
I doubt Lester will have 2 bad outings in a row.
The ominous sign came when they only got 4 hits against a Beckett who shouldn’t even be pitching with his injury and an awful BP that they tattooed the rest of the series. They looked lost yesterday at the plate– they didn’t look like the confident team that steamed through Fenway.
This isin’t going to end well. I actually think Garza, even though he is a headcase, will pitch well. But I don’t think they’ll do anything off Lester.
vinny and Z – I can certainly understand that theory also. You have a David and Goliath situation.
Guys I really think you’re just setting yourselves up again for disappointment.
This Rays looks beaten. I’d be surprised if Lester gives up a hit before the 5th inning. It’s like a movie script. The pitcher gets beaten, then rises up to be the star and pitches great. Seems obvious.
Eric Mangini = Worst coach in baseball history
They need to get Bill Cowher this off-season. They are wasting Favre, they are using him like Pennington.

Guys I really think you’re just setting yourselves up again for disappointment”
I wish you would have told me the same, regarding the Jets today.
Dman, I agree. I can see this being a repeat of game 1 where Dice-K was unhittable.
I hope to god the Rays win, but I just don’t see it. Too many ominous signs. Blowing a 7 run lead with 7 outs to go must have been a knife right through the heart, especially against this team that has done it before. Sucked the air right out of them.
They have the physical talent to beat them tonight, I just don’t think they have the mentality, not after game 5. You don’t recover from that type of collapse so quickly.
god i hope the rays win
what chances do the phillies have against the sox?
So Joba made a mistake … it doesn’t necessarily mean he ‘has a problem’. If it happens regularly then maybe he does, but lots of people w/o a problem make that mistake once and learn their lesson. Give him a chance to do that before judging it as a sign of something chronic. At least nobody got hurt.
vinny-b-
I thought the Jets would be winning. I guess looking at it now, it looks like a classic trap game.
the rays need to stop doing too much, what happened to their impecable defense especially in the infield?? they are throwing the ball to first base like they are blind!
as always veterans will trump rookies, but for our cases lets pray this time it doesnt work out that way
I think the Phillies can beat the Sux. But that’s from watching the Phils just in this postseason and seeing how great they’ve played.
I am interested to see if Seahawks/Bucs does a higher rating than Tampa/Sox game 7. Both venues are 15 miles apart.
As far as the game, I don’t have much hope. Rays had a WS birth on a silver platter in game 5 and they didn’t take it. They awoke a sleeping giant, the defending champs. They don’t have anywhere near the talent they did last year, but they have a heart of a champion and I think it will show tonight. I hope I’m wrong.
we need pitchin and a big bat if we sign cc and nurnett or peavy
ANSKY, it appears that most of us are doing just that.
THE RAYS WILL WIN!
yeah i said it.
ANSKY -
Most people on this board agree with you. If you look at yesterday’s thread, there were a couple of people on their high horse and self-righteousness saying things like “I can’t look at him the same again, I won’t root for him. I have no tolerance for attempted murders like him etc.”, but those few got fought off pretty quickly by the level headed people here.
He deserves a 2nd chance and an opportunity to show he has learned his lesson. Everyone makes mistakes.
Fingers crossed.
GO RAYS!!!!!
Be back ASAP.
I predict a blowout by the Sox. At least that way I won’t have to stay awake waiting for the end.
Rays offense needs to attack Lester. Can’t expect Garza to work miracles, I’d be happy if he had a quality start (6 IP, 3 ER).
Time for Longoria, Crawford, Upton etc. to show they belong. It’s up to them to win the series.
I can’t stand to even watch this game. I’ll watch the NFL game instead, even though it sucks.
Going to watch some scary movies myself.
There’s less chance of me getting nightmares from a horror movie than from watching the sox win again.
I’m not sure the Jets are all that good.
jets get a second chance
and tie it up
And Oakland calls the timeout on a game tying missed field goal. 13-13 with 3 seconds
How dumb are the Raiders?
Talk about second guessing yourself if Oakland loses.
Twice this year, that hasn’t worked. Have we seen the end of it?
if the jets win the raiders are gonna feel like idiots, not that they dont feel like idiots already lol
S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and show CC the money (and food)!

The coach gets his first game and if he loses on that call, Al Davis will stroke out.
Will Al Davis fire Cable for cause?
Or did Al Davis call down that TO from his box?
Or both?
Well the money I won on USC yesterday, looks like I’m returning it plus the 10 %……Playing the Tampa Bat Rays tonight as they’re a slight dog at home……Turn over will determine the Jet game..
A big FU to the Browns for looking like world beaters against the Jints and looking like total crap against the Skins.
Where’s my turnover ????

Will Al Davis fire Cable for cause?
________________________________________________________
Davis may switch from Cable to Satallite just (be)cause. This isn’t Ken Stabler and Fred Biletnikoff
It might end in a tie.
Not now. Another 1st down and it’s a field goal.
I gotta give it to the Raiders fans. Their team is a mess, their owner scares little children-yet they are still out there cheering their little silver and black hearts out for their team
2 mediocre teams in overtime, ruining my chances of watching the amazing race instead of the game tonight lol
Holy crap, what a leg. That cost me!
Raiders win
Crazy Al goes back into his crypt a somewhat happy man
big time kich there.
DAMN 57 yard field goal
Just the start of bad scores that we’ll have to witness tonight. Man I hate sports right now.
Eric Mangini, have your resignation on my desk tomorrow morning.
I hate the Jets
Why must a root for a team that is so bad?
The coaching staff has no idea what to do with Brett as their qb. they think they still have noodle arm Chad there. Also the o line stunk today. Brett had no protection, he was getting killed all day.
Ah the trouble with false idols–inflate them into superhumans with god-like attributes. Then, watch them tumble to earth because they are simply human and, therefor, likely to stray. Dumb move by a seemingly decent young man. The public embarrassment he will suffer should be sufficient inducement to toe the line . . . er, rubber.
Only thing that could be worse today is the Sox clinching the pennant (which is more than likely)
Here’s the apology with comments from Hank.
I bet he’d give Joba a hundred chances.
When bad things happen to bad teams.
That pickoff of Farve at the goal line in the 2nd quarter was the missed knockout punch…..All I’m doing is pushing every week ( the vig is costing me )…..Can’t wait until college bb starts so I can rescue at least part of my portfolio…
Oops. And here’s the hyperlink:

I hate the Jets Why must a root for a team that is so bad?”
as you said, it’s the coaching staff.
I don’t put any of this on the players. The team is very talented & plays hard. It have to do with the game-planning. The team is lacking direction.
Why does Dennis Eckersley irritate me? Is it the 70′s look? Is it his know it all personality? Is it the finger pointing?
Why don’t you guys like Mangini? Is his claim to fame that he beat Belichick once?
DUI not DWI. Different things.
What’s the difference? Is it technical? Letter of the law? Degree? Which is worse?
question: will their be more yankee fans watching tonights game than rays fans?
dennis-
i hope not. im not going to duffer through it myself. i’ll hear enough about it tomorrow.
question: will their be more yankee fans watching tonights game than rays fans?
Ha! Good question. No idea
Loading it up on the Tampa Bay Bat Rays……
Here we go Tampa…let’s kill of the Sox tonight!
Just stopping in here to say Hi. My Jets just lost to the Raiders so I’m in a pretty bad mood. I don’t have the heart to watch game 7 I’ll be back in here later to lament about the Sux.

NYY fans, by far.
I lived in Tallahassee for 2 yrs, and didn’t know one Rays fan.
Nick in SF, Are you playing this game ?????
even though we missed the playoffs this year, its like we are still in them… with only a chance to lose! god, i hate the sox.
good thing im a giants fan
so my night will only half suck
anthony-
Yup, I’m taking this Ray’s collapse almost as hard as if it were the Yankees.
mel- He doesn’t know how to utilize the players that he has. He continues with those stupid screen passes. Yes sometimes the work, but for the jets more often than not it seems like the d sniffs it out.
DMan
I am with you. I had a meltdown on Thursday night after the game and the last time I had a baseball related meltdown was the bug game last year in Cleveland.
“question: will their be more yankee fans watching tonights game than rays fans?”
depends if they lost the bandwagon already.
PAT M: the U$C bet was smart. I was scared off by the big number, but I should have considered that Cal beat WSU 66-3 up there, so it was pretty likely that the Trojans could come close to that, given their superiority. Oops.
Despite the J-E-T-S lameness, today will be a solid day for me if the Bucs can cover 4 points. My Marshawn Lynch/Aaron Rodgers Cal alum parlay was a big win. Rays +1.5 would be gravy. Rays outright would be the cherry on top of the Moose Bar floating on the gravy.
Yum.
I love how none of the coverage misses an opp to tell us what kind of car joba was driving! Go forth and buy a 750i bmw, the car joba speeds in with a beer! (You can choose the beer yourself)
Yankees co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner said the team would give Chamberlain that chance to make good.
“If he needs help, we’ll certainly give it to him,” Steinbrenner told the New York Daily News.
“It happens,” he said. “Everybody deserves a second chance — or even a third chance. “He’s 23 years old. He’s just very lucky that nothing more serious happened. We’re talking about a really good kid here, and that’s what counts.”
Love the Hank. He speaks the truth.
As long as Joba keeps throwing 99, this will all be forgotten
trisha, i teach high school history and we are covering the “dewey defeats truman” fiasco. i gave my students an assignment to give a modern day example and one wisenheimer used your posts before the comeback on thursday night. i gave him a d+!
Kevin-
It’s actually a little comforting to know that there are others taking this as hard as I am. It’s honestly painful to watch this happen.
Not good
Ugh
1-0 Red Sox
That little troll!!
we need to begin drafting players, like this.
I don’t care if he is a midget.
Did you finish all those Moose Bars Nick?
I hate Pedroia with a passion.
Hopefully Garza can hold them to just the one run
You’re kidding me, right?
Friggin’ Boston.
(PAT M: crap like that is why I’m only playing this game in a limited way)
The joke is on Pedroia, he lost another 75 hair follicles running the bases.
He’s becoming a pain in my ass…
Balding Midget…5’9″ my arse.
“he lost another 75 hair follicles running the bases.”
HAHA!
Where was that ball 4 pitch to Papi?
eric mangenius should be renamed eric mangentard for the abomination he coached today. disgusting. totally called that pedroia hr at like 430 today. knowing the outcome of the game before it starts is miserable when its ANOTHER red sox win.
Garza calm down and throw some strikes please
S.A.: I have one lone Moose Bar left from my original order. I was going to eat it when he got #20, but for some reason I didn’t. Now I’m saving it until he announces his return or retirement. But I have an order for the full case pending as per my 20-wins pledge.
I also have an order for DumDum lollipops pending, for concerned parties.
ah a good move by maddon, baldelli in RF and not Gabriel Gross
(PAT M: I did take a little of the over 8.5 runs. In case it gets ugly.)
Key move by Madden , Baldelli in RF…
okay 1 run hopefully it stays that way for a while
Gross has been a butcher out there the past few games with his shallow play, his ridiculous throw from shallow right field with Kotsay rounding third, and the bloop hit he allowed by playing it safe…
No wonder his last name is Gross; he’s been playing like garbage.
I am praying more for a Rays win than I did this year for the Yanks to make the playoffs.
That’s sad.
Somewhere, in the rat-infested bowels of Fenway Park, Peter Gammons just had a semi-stroke after the Pedroia HR.
Has anyone been to Nebraska? At one in the morning there isn’t a soul on the highway other than Smokey checking for speeders. This isn’t downtown Manhattan. And it was DUI so he wasn’t drunk. That’s like two beers. This, I lost all faith in Joba is beyond silly.
Hey, why no new game thread? Is Pete en route to Lincoln to do a little investigative reporting?
nick, what was the line on tonights alcs game?
I actually think I hate Boston winning more than I hate the Yankees losing and that says an awful lot.
Maybe Pete is busy dancing in the streets over the Jets loss?

Cool.

Thought about the overs, but the Jet loss took that out of play…I’m still smarting over that game….If the game evoleves into the bullpens you’re looking good Nick in SF….

And I got land in Florida underwater cheap for you. Trisha this guys a fraud. Probly can’t hide his excitement about going up one run. Ignore him.
I suspect he’s one of the high school student he pretends to teach. Nothing like a teacher starting off sentences with a small “i” even though he is a small person.
dennis: tampa on the money line at +116 and the run line at -140, the OU was 8.5.
I just hope Nick didn’t wager on the Jets game.
You should spend a little time with Springsteen’s Nebraska before you judge Joba too harshly:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GG2nTSp4nQA
sherlock, i wish you were right, then this would’nt be so painful!
TD Bucs
You’re full of crap so can it. You’re full of crap with your phony assignment story. You’re just trying to rub her face in it.
What’s painful is seeing stupid stories put up by phony posters.
Tampa’s done like dinner. The big question is that after choking away the series, will this affect the ballclub long term? They are a young team, but to have this kind of collapse on their watch is going to be tough to overcome. My opinion is that if the lose the ALCS, they need to pass Baltimore, and go right back to the cellar for another ten years.
Did anyone notice that Joba was driving a 2006 Bimmer with dealer plates, in other words a loaner. I’m surprised they hauled him in, most cops are sports fans and Joba would be like a Diety in Lincoln Nebraska. Maybe he mouthed off about the speeding ticket.
Most likely Selig will contract Tampa if they lose this series. No more Rays. The sun will not come out tomorrow.
In 3 hours or so it will be #7′s 77th!!! Happy birthday, Mick!!!!!! A moment of respect for one of the greatest!
bones, oh omnipotent one, give me the final score of tonights game?
Last two games, Tampa scored first and then Boston won.
Today Boston scored first, but they are contained next two innings.
So, if the trend has any thing to do, Tampa should win today
Lester is throwing a no hitter, or rather a perfect game.
Good news, everyone! While the Sox may win the game, either way we’ll be free of Frank TV ads until next postseason.
Stephen:
hopefully, the viagra commercials as well.
able to deal with Frank.
If it was just the Frank TV ads it would be ok, but doubling up with the Dish Network ads is tough.
Where have you gone, Guiseppe Franco, our nation turns its lonely eyes to you.

true. Marketing “geniuses”.
wow look at all those brand new rays t-shirts!!!
In these states, a DUI usually signifies a lesser degree of intoxication, which is determined by a person’s blood alcohol level at the time of arrest.
Come on Rocco. make me proud
Is Tampa still without a hit?
i hate boston
“I’m surprised they hauled him in, most cops are sports fans and Joba would be like a Diety in Lincoln Nebraska”
In Lincoln, Nebraska:
Cornhusker football players = diety
Baseball players, Cornhusker or otherwise = not so much
Maybe Tom Osborne will give him a royal pardon.
ALCS MVP???
If Boston wins = Upton
If Tampa wins = Garza
So what’s the concensus? Is the 36 hour dosage better than the spot dosage?
Ugh. Talk about gross.
Still time, still time.
C’mon Rays, focus!
Can the Rays get a hit? Please?
There we go
anyone know if Eckersely said something out the way to Harold Reynolds, on one of the pre-game shows?
a person claimed Eckersley told Harold Reynolds “you bother me”. Or something rather.
Well, at least we won’t have to suffer through another no-hitter.
He better get into scoring position.
Innocent until proven guilty in the court of law. Not saying that Joba’s alleged acts are at all defendable or appropriate, but our Constitution is based on the term “innocent until proven guilty.” You have to give him the benefit of the doubt until he is proved to have been DUI in court. People woondering if he has a drinking problem: If he has a drinking problem, I think his BAC would be higher, and he would be charged with DWI. He might be a victim of circumstance also. Had he not been driving and $80,000 BMW, perhaps he does not even get stopped. And maybe he has a high level of alcohol tolerance and was just fine driving. If it sounds like Im defending him, I am. At least for now. If he is found or pleas guilty, his actions are inexcusable. For now, you can speculate.
Bucs up 14-0. Come on Rays! Need some runs!
Tampa hitters = choking
“I’m surprised they hauled him in, most cops are sports fans and Joba would be like a Diety in Lincoln Nebraska”
A public case like this is used to make examples. If Joba can get arrested for this, anyone can.
“I’m surprised they hauled him in, most cops are sports fans and Joba would be like a Diety in Lincoln Nebraska”

Or Longoria could hit a double.
We have scored!!!!!
Oh man he is slow. Whew!!!!!
Yes!
now have Price ready, for the slightest bit of trouble.
do not waste Price. This is your chance, Tampa.
They should have used price in the 7-0 game.
For a first baseman, Pena was pretty fast.
Very few, if any, first basemen would have scored on that play.
carl crawford is a HACK!
as overrated as it gets in major league baseball
At least they scored…now all they have to do is hold Boston and yes I know that is easier said than done.
In the old days, a public figure could get away with a lot. Ever since OJ supposively got away with murder, the tide has changed. It was evident when Wee Willy Spitzer went after Martha and heightened with the ridiculous Michael Vick affair.
Fair or not, celebs will have to pay. Even for minor stuff.
But if you’re famous, shouldn’t you be extra careful and cautious? Makes sense to me.
Tex would have scored on that play.
Garza should drill Jason in the back, and when he gets upset he should tell him we don’t drill .056 hitters.
keep it up Garza
Wow. I was totally wrong about Garza tonight, I had very little faith in him. I’m tipping my cap.
“Tex would have scored on that play.”
Garza is looking good tonight
Nick in SF
No Jinxing!
ALRIGHT
SCORE HERE.
Come on, Rays!
Hey all.
Home and hopeful.
Jen – AWESOME JOB. Thank God you mentioned the no hitter girl!!!
GO RAYS!
Nice!! Almost got that over the short wall out there.
BTW – I LOVE having Buck announcing the games!! I have XM and make sure to listen to him everyday.
Geez maybe Lester was “thin” because he was sick at the time.
Also how did Lester add 5 miles on his FB? He was low ninties 2 years ago.
Navarro isn’t biting.
Rocco will be the man….It’s only fitting
Things could be unraveling before our very eyes…beautiful!!!!!
ok. Keep it going!
Lay one down here Rocco!!
Oh just missed.
Faithful ex-Yank Dionner Navarro.
About Reynolds and that little fruitcake Eckersley. I don’t know if they had words but I can tell you that Harold Reynolds refuses to back down from his position that the Rays will take it. I’m sure that doesn’t please the Sux mouthpiece Eckersley.
no bunt?? The way Lester is throwing you cannot take the chance of a DP here – gotta give yourself two chances at a base hit to make this game 3-1
Hey, I’m not calling a win for him or anything, but 5 innings 1 run, pretty good.
WHOO! Go Rays!
how is baldelli not bunting????? ok base hit ill take that
but then again, what the hell do I know!!
That a boy Rocco!!
OH I AM SO HAPPY!!!!!
alrighttttt
and look at Dickie V !!!!!!!!!!!!
They need to keep on eye on Dickie V. He might have a heart attack. Nice hitting by Baldelli.
Very great Rocco!!!! The bullpen is up…how sweet is this!!!
How big are 2 out hits? Does Chip realize there are no hits.
woooooooohooooo
*Does Chip realize there are no outs?
Maybe bunt with the 9 man, Maddon cmon.
Come on. Keep it going Rays!!!!!!!!
This is so sweet.
Rays are getting real good swings vs. Lester now…
Keep it up Tampa…no lead is safe with these goons as you learned yourself.
keep it going.
the Rays will need *every* run to win, this game
why didnt bartlett bunt..but hell prbly get a hit now
Geeze, Maddon!!!
Yeah he keeps talks about 2 out hits. He he he.
Meanwhile I think the Rays need to get more runs across this inning please. They have Lester on the ropes. Don’t wanna let him up.
Thanks.
Damn.
NOW he can talk about two out hits…
Grrr!!!
need 1 more hit, here.
who knows. May be the last chance.
That was unfortunate.
Go Matt.
Not a good inning.
Barlett should have bunted.
Alright in the lead here and Garza is actually throwing well tonight, but I would feel more safe if Tampa scores a couple more times.
A haunting lost opportunity I fear…..
I LOVE having Buck announcing the games!
Not… Joe Buck… right?
If so, may you be plagued with ingrown nails.
uuuggghhh
like i said, i hope David Price is ready to go, at drop of a hat.
That will undoubtedly come back to haunt them. Cannot waste chances like that in an elimination game.
As much as I dislike Pedroia, the guy really is a great player.
Don’t let this kill you Garza.
be careful, Garza
So much for a quick inning.
Garza looks like he’s scared of Strike three!
Very good!!!!
That’s the way to do it.
ok Tampa.
get a run or two, now
Or, you know, maybe not.
NICE WORK!!
NAVARRO IS THE MAN!! GARZA IS PITCHING LIKE A CHAMP!!
This is what I posted that wouldn’t post because believe it or not, f atty won’t get past the censor!
But by cracky, I was right!
Too bad he can’t get f atty to hit into a DP.
Well in a sense he did! He he he he he.
GO RAYS!!!!!
Man David Ortiz looks suddenly old….I understand that his wrist is not right, but his hands seem to trail the pitches through the zone…..Big dp……
Pedroia’s attempts at trick slides are getting ridiculous.
Wow. How bad did Ortiz look there?
Are we being set up for more heartbreak???? This is getting tense.
Cripes. I was about to say that Rays need some long balls. But shouldn’t they be a little more patient?
What a waste of an inning.
They could at least make Lester work a little. The Sox bullpen has been too good and they are due an implosion. Aren’t they?
This inning is not what they needed. They needed to knock Lester out for sure and instead the middle of the order goes down 1-2-3 on about 6 pitches.
C’mon Rays, keep it going.
Nick, I have had such an unshakeable feeling that the Rays would end up taking this series despite the last two games. Of course when you are in the middle of the game with only a one-run lead, it feels a little scary.
But if I go with what I have been feeling I have to say the Rays will take this game. I obviously would feel a whole lot better if the Ray could score some more runs and fast…
That’s bad coaching, you’ve got young kids who are hyper. Settle them down by giving them a hitting plan, foul off some pitches. Costly mistake.
And for all the reasons in the world, it always feels much better when you get that first out.
Come on Rays
Garza is making this look so easy tonight.
if Garza gets past this inning, David Price should pitch the 8th/9th.
RedSox haven’t faced him much. Advantage Price.
Does it look like Garza is getting a little tired?
He is looking a bit tired, but all hands are on deck tonight and he has pitched very well.
Garza is at the end of the line. Maddon needs to be very careful this inning. This could get real ugly real fast for the Rays if the Sox take advantage of Garza’s high pitch count.
Now this is when I would pull him.
Uh Oh
get Price in this game. Now!
Oh boy…not good.
Oh boy, this could end up being the wrong decision.
Ok DP here!!
Genius or idiot? We’ll see.
Well at least they’re up in the game.
Can they get 8 outs?
2 men on. This is getting tense.
The Price idea is good. Red Sox don’t know much about him. And he has nasty stuff.
Perhaps Maddon is hesitant because he’s a rookie who hasn’t pitched a lot?
As I said earlier tonight I think I hate Boston winning more than I hate the Yankees losing period and it is showing right now.
Semi genius.
PLEASE GARZA! GET IT DONE!!!
One more Garza…c’mon man.
Trevor – I would think that’s the case, yes.
Too bad – think he could have a big impact.
Seven out to go…exactly where we were on Thursday night.
Maddon is an idiot, for leaving him in.
PRICE.
GENIUS
THANK YOU GOD.
Booo Yah!!!
There’s the Tek we know and love.
THAT A BOY CAPTAIN TEK!! BEST CAPTAIN IN BASEBALL!!
Make that 8 of 52 with RISP 2 outs
BIG game Garza.
I’m certainly gonna feel a whole lot better with some Rays runs. Not that I don’t have faith in their pen mind you…
It’s better for their psyche to get more runs, ya know.
.053 Varitek
Holy Moly. Whew
Ok, obviously Garza is out.
Who does Maddon bring in for the final 6 outs and get the heart of the Boston lineup out?
where on Earth is David Price?
can someone get him in there please?
meanwhile
BIG GAME GARZA indeed
6 outs to go.
*looks at Rays Bullpen*
oh dear….decisions decisions.
Am I allowed to tip my cap to Garza now? I think he’s gone. Big money performance.
Good question. Maybe a combination of Trevor Miller and Chad Bradford?
Garza going back out?!?!? Is that what I just heard?
Maybe if the Rays get some more runs we’ll see Price.
Balfour, Miller with Price in the wings. No Jackson at all. Wheeler’s overworked and un-re-li-a-bull.
Forgot about Howell.
It may matter depending upon this inning.
If Garza goes back out you know he’ll be on a hitter-by-hitter leash.
Yes!
3-1 Rays
Oh YEAH!
Very good boys!!!!
oh baby! Don’t stop now!
And now I am kind of crying with guarded happiness.
SWUNG ON AND THERE IT GOES TO DEEP LEFT
IT IS HIGH
IT IS FAR
IT… IS… GONE!!!!!!!!!!
AN A-BOMB… FROM A-YBAR?? LOL
Sending Garza out, if they did, isn’t quite as scary with at least a 2-run lead.
My original prediction of Rays in 7 is looking quite good.
break loose, and add some more here…
Gutsy, Gutsy performance by Garza.
I was one of the many who said that he didn’t have the tempermant for this type of pressure game. Glad I was wrong
Go Rays!
Trevor…don’t jinx it
do not go to wheeler under any circumstances
Trevor correct me if I’m wrong, but lately you’ve been pulling up shaky. I may have predicted them in three, but I never “unpredicted” them!
Why not have Kazmir pitch the final 2 innings? This is probably his throw day anyway.
the question is, will Maddon finish the job, this time.
let Price get the last 6 outs. He will mow them down!
So, who pitches the 8th?
Batter to batter with Garza even though he has thrown 116 pitches and started to get hit?
Balfour? Bradford again?
Sorry. I won’t jinx it either.
By the way, it isn’t WOONsocket. It’s WoonSOCKet.
Thank you.
Garza should start the 8th…He smells blood….
Trisha, where you from?
Caps – who cares if it’s his throw day or not lol – Game 7 – EVERYONE is available!!
I don’t know what Garza’s high is but he did put runners on last inning, and he was in the bottom of the lineup.
But Maddon called it right, so I will not attempt to manage.
Is there something wrong with me….I am rooting as hard for the Rays to win and Sox to lose as I do for the Yankees…I just feel like I can have a winter of peace and relaxation and hopefully excitement with the Yankees moves as long as the Sox don’t repeat……
JR – RI
If Maddon didn’t put price into game 5 is he really going to use him in crunch time in game 7? Maybe, but I’d be surprised. Pleasantly surprised.
I use Balfour for the 8th with Cora, Crisp, and Pedroia up.
I have Trevor Miller waiting too if Ortiz comes up. If not, I start the 9th with Miller with Ortiz leading off and Drew due up 3rd.
Now the question is, do you go Miller for Ortiz, then bring in a righty to face Youkallis and then Howell/Price to finish off Drew?
Damn, I wish they could just bring in Mariano for 2 innings.
Keith – just know it’s not an unusual emotion.
Kieth – there is absolutely nothing wrong with that – I think it’s what we all want
Warwick here. FL now but hopefully back to RI soon.
Nice to see another misplaced Yankees fan like myself.
Howell’s been used quite a bit.
wtf Garza still on.
GABE GROSS????????
Keith…nothing wrong with you pal. That is what all of us feel like tonight.
Oh no…not Gross. He has been a defensive liability lately.
WOW JR!!!! I’m in No Prov!
Hey we should get together and go to a game at McCoy when SWB is there. I can get pretty good tickets, not that there are bad ones.
Maddon don’t pull a Grady Little here, however, with what your pen did in Game 5 I can’t really blame you.
I would bring in Kazmir to pitch the 8th, Shields to pitch the 9th.
not a good sign.
oh damn – that looks familiar
Uh oh…here we go.
Geeze. Please don’t tell me this is where they are going to start to melt down. Oh my God.
CHOKE
Uh Oh…Don’t botch this now Tampa…six outs to go
Wow, more Garza. OOOOOOF, not his fault.
Maddon, shine on you crazy diamond.
(Has Pete landed in Lincoln yet? Is he at the crime scene?)
alright i think its bullpen time now.
I want Bradford
How many freakin’ breaks can they get?
Garza deserves a cookie for his performance today! Well done!
That is a HELL of a job by Matt Garza!!
and also quite possibly the first hat-tip by a Rays pitcher in the trops history lol
Nice game Garza…you did your job and now it is up to the bullpen to hold and get the save
LET’S GO RAYS
PLEASE
ANYTHING
cause i just don’t see the Phillies capable of beating the blowsox in the world series.
Rays cmon kill the evil seven-headed dragon.
OH GOD WHEELER
WHAT ARE U DOING MADDEN
WHAT ON EARTH ARE YOU DOING
this is like Torre bringing in Proctor
THE HORRIBLE MEMORIES
Live in FL now so no SWB for me. I went to see the Marlins/Yanks for the last 2 spring training games here in March. Saw the Tampa Yankees when they came to West Palm. And I plan on seeing the Yanks play the Marlins in June/July when they are down here for a weekend interleague series.
Wheeler.
Please Dan Wheeler. Get it done. (Wheeler is also from RI, fwiw, which isn’t much!)
Wheeler will get it done
Wheeler will get it done
Wheeler will get it done
Wheeler will get it done…
Oh JR I thought you meant that you were in FL visiting. Are you planning to move back to RI?
wheeler??? You’ve got to be kidding me
Wheeler will not pull an Igawa
Wheeler will not pull an Igawa
Wheeler will not pull an Igawa
Wheeler will not pull an Igawa
Wheeler will not pull an Igawa
Wheeler will not pull an Igawa
Get it done Wheeler…please get it done! I’m begging you to get it done.
JR Yankees – I go to the Tampa Yankee games when I’m in Palm Beach too – I’ll definitely be at Dolphin Stadium for the Marlins series and it’s about an hour and a half from UCF (Orlando) to the Trop so I try to catch as many of those games as I can
Price should’ve been in this game, to begin the 8th.
Maddon trying to blow this one, too.
Where the $@#$@# is David Price?
Uh Oh…This does not look good.
They need to get Wheeler out now.
Yea, hopefully. I have a visit coming up on the 28th of October for a week. I cannot come up there with the Sox in the WS again. I will never live it down.
By the way, Wheeler being from RI and all…I think he is secretly a Red Sox fan.
MADDON, HE DOESN”T HAVE IT…PULL THE PLUG!
I now want to change the station but I will not.
I feel like I could almost puke.
I can’t give up the faith.
Would Maddon take Wheeler out if it looked like he had nothing?
The Rays bullpen stinks…but I hope they can pull it out.
Why bring in Wheeler???????
One big out
ok there’s one…. DP here from Ortiz!!
maddon should get the boot if the sox come back and win because of wheeler.
He’s done alot for the rays but he is taking a huge gamble
Thank goodness, get that guy out of there!
THANK YOU GOD
THANK YOU JOE MADDON!!!
WHEW
At least he’s matching up now.
Is it Howell?
where is kazmir or price…come on maddon…don’t mess this up…
Okay, playing the numbers against Pedroia worked. Isn’t Bradford a groundball pitcher?
Wheeler coming in? um
“The Rays bullpen stinks…but I hope they can pull it out”
Well this has certainly changed in the postseason. Everyone loved their pen during the year.
Joe 28, I went to a weekend series in Tampa in 2006. It is 4 hours away so not very close for me. The Trop isn’t so bad and a buddy of mine was staying where the Yanks stay. I saw Arod at the pool. Chein Ming Wang outside. Cano, Bernie, Arod, and their crews at the bar. Guidry and Pena and the other coaches came in and the Gator stood beside me at the bar. Pretty cool stuff.
anyone know the matchup numbers for Howell and Ortiz?
Don’t mind me. I’m all confused. lol
Howell in vs. Ortiz. Oh boy
Get this big bully out.
This reminds me of 1995, when the Yankees had Mo but refused to use him.
On the plus side, should Tampa blow this, I have an angle for my blog post.
No but that’s the guy you want in since it’s lefty against lefty.
Odds Ortiz wrecks this game, 50/50?
this is the game.
If they get Ortiz out here. They will win.
there’s still Yuckillis which can be a pain in the ass.
This is scary
Rebecca: in a similar situation, the Angels used an unknown named, K-Rod. That worked out fairly well.
JR – Sounds awesome!! Yeah Tampa is a far trip from Palm Beach but I go to school in Orlando and home is Boca so the Marlins are about 45 minutes away from home. Went to the WS in 03 – great time. I love watching games at the Trop – it might not look great on TV (ok it looks awful on TV) but it is SO comfortable to watch a baseball game in the a/c, especially on those hot/humid days
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!
Sorry, needed over 26 points in the Bucs game. Anything happening in the Rays game?
Oh my god, that lady in the crowd was so nervous she was twitching! On the other hand, I think I am getting an ulcer.
Did you guys see the lady Rays fan blinking signals from the stands?
And WTH is Orbitz wearing under his jersey?
HUGE out
hee hee hoooooooo
So close, but no cigar
Maddon is managing this game beautifully
This is what we wanted to see in game 5
Nothing like in and out
YES
THANK YOU HOWELL.
thank goodness coco crisp is coo coo for co co puffs…
LOL abcd
Please. Please. Oh God, please.
I’d like to see Bradford now since he hasn’t been hit yet…
Phillies in 6. Doesn’t matter if it’s the Rays or Sox.
Not outta the woods yet.
Mel, I didn’t realize she was signaling pitches from the stands I just thought she was having a nervous break down.
Or is it that he hasn’t given up a run?
Why does Coco always look like hes wearing makeup?
Gimme Back my Bullets. If this is Bradford’s song I love this dude.
A Price sighting. Finally!
I’m having a coronary watching this right now…get the job done please Tampa
Not crazy about this matchup…
PLEASE
PLEASE
PLEASE
PLEASE
Alright, seriously. This matchup is not fair at all, the pitcher is obviously distracted.
Youkilis is so ugly the umpires should make him wear a bag over his head.
Head start here for Papi at first :-/
Oh jeeeezus
WILL THE PRICE BE RIGHT?!?!!?
How does Bradford ever get anyone out? I’ve never understood it.
Someone please tell me when I can breathe again.
bases jacked for Nancy Drew.
I think he used up all his clutchness in game 5 already.
DL Drew is the last guy I wanted to see in this situation…..Oh Lord…
How funny was that Axe commercial.
Stupid Bartlett.
Prediction:
Drew drops one in just over Gross’ hea.
about time for Price…
This is an incredibly risky move.
My heart is beating 10,000 miles a minute…..I will never sleep tonight, come on Rays!!!!!
Watch Price give it up
Drew K’s
God bless David Price. These are the moments that I am in awe of this game.
Game 7′s are the leading cause of heart attacks in the United States
Whats the situation? 1st, 2nd 2 out?
Big advantage for the Rays. They have never seen him…
make him chase
the Price is RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!
THE PRICE IS MF’N RIGHT Y’ALL!!!!!!!!
Talk about clutch.
HELL YEAH DAVID PRICE!!!!!!!!!!
FILTHYYYY
good boy
K!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Price you da man!!!!!!
Oh man. You know he was available in game 5 too, Maddon.
Soooooooooooooo close now!
Impressive job by Price there. 3 outs until Boston is eliminated.
DAVID PRICE!
this kid is gonna be lots of trouble for the AL east in the coming years.
And I now have tears coming down my cheeks because I have just witnessed a perfect moment in baseball.
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!
david right needs to pitch the 9th…
note to joe maddon – you should’ve used him in game 5 you DOLT!!!
WooHoo!
Damn, He never missed the target…..Wow…..
And ladies and gentlemen, THAT is why you have David Price.
that was a check swing…good though
LOL Nick
Uh oh…I hope ESPN didn’t catch that fist pump.
I don’t think fist pumps are allowed in the ALCS.
Damn, I don’t want the Yanks facing that kid for the next 10 years.
Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. They’ve gotten through the worst past of the order. Go David Price and GO VANDY:)
“Game 7’s are the leading cause of heart attacks in the United States”
Price will be killng the Yankees for the next few years but who cares!!!! 3 more outs…..you can do it Rays!!!!!!
Maddon used a hard throwing pitcher then a 80 mph fast finese pitcher.Who knew finally using price against the heart of the hitting order would help.
That kid is going to be a tough SP for the next 10 yrs.
5 pitchers (Garza, Wheeler, Howell, Bradford, and Price) and exactly 30 minutes to finish the top of the 8th inning.
Wow
david price is randy johnson reincarnate…
Trevor didn’t they say he pitched in game 2?
That kid is going to be a tough SP for the next 10 yrs.
David Price is their Joba of last year. that’s why you put a phenmon rookie pitcher on the postseason roster.
He’s actually Sabathia only more welly toned.
Now watch Maddon go to Balfour to finish the game and watch him put runners on base, prompting Madden to go to Andy Sonenstein out of the bullpen to get the final 2 outs with runners on.
Price will pitch the 9th ..right????
“That kid is going to be a tough SP for the next 10 yrs.”
The next 30 minutes will be enough for now. I’ll worry about the balance of the next 9 years or so then.
“david price is randy johnson reincarnate…”
Johnson was a slow starter. Hope the Yankees have the patience to develop talent like that…
I wish Hulu had some old Yankees games on WPIX. “Cora and I are going to Florida tonight, White.”
Two words for you guys: insurance runs.
David Price is their Joba of last year. that’s why you put a phenmon rookie pitcher on the postseason roster.
Makes you wonder who we put next season, Brackman, Dunn or Betances ?
This is the last game I’m a Rays fan. It’s let’s go Phillies starting Wednesday.
normally don’t like domes, but i like this stadium.
people in Florida get enough sun. They should keep it.
Trevor, Price won game 2 so they did face him before.
The mistake they made was not conditioning him for this role during the final 2 weeks of the season, like the Cards did with Wainwright.
That way, he would have been comfortable in that role and Maddon would be comfortable using him.
Torre made the same mistake with Kershaw. He then didn’t know how to use him.
But all that is irrelevant now, 3 outs and BOS is gone.
Here we go…top of the 9th.
To the 9th we go.
3 outs away
Ok, NOW it’s show time.
I’d have Price out there but Maddon knows his guys better than I do.
Makes you wonder who we put next season, Brackman, Dunn or Betances ?
also add Melcanon and Cox.
I like the Trop. Any building in St. Pete with air conditioning is fine with me.
I don’t care who wins the WS as long as it’s not the Red Sox but I should pull for the Phils because they are not in our division.
At least we have a 2-run cushion here.
Just sayin. Less scary than a one run cushion – by one run.
I will never forgive Maddon for game 5. I had Rays at +140!
How can ANYONE think about next season?????
Come on. Stay in this game for now.
The one player that has been very impressive, is our old catcher Naverro…..
“also add Melancon and Cox”
Melancon yes Cox not so much.
Dan Wheeler = Armando Benitiez?
Vinny-B – I love going to games in Tampa. It is literally too hot to watch a game outside. People would be passing out in the stands all season long
David Price you can do it pal
also add Melcanon and Cox.
IDK what the plan is for Cox, he might be trade bait. Melancon I can see…nevermind back to this game…
Price from the wind-up has to be the right move here.
Price is the left handed version of Joba.
Tek is due up third – we can only hope he makes the last out – though as long as a red sox batter makes the last out I’m perfectly fine with it – but if it’s Tek it’ll be that much better
SHUT UP CARAY YOU FREAK
I have seen Price pitching in person. He is pretty impressive, but Im not ready to call him Randy Johnson.
where did that miss!?!?!?!
Oh come on that was a swing!!
how is that a ball? omg…
oh – stupid K zone thing proving me wrong lol, he still swung at it though!!
ok…. DP here
David please do pull your AA struggles w/ control here, send Boston home crying.
Does he have a quality third pitch? because next year team are going to catch up to him if he doesn’t and they have him as a starter.
argh
Nice gift thanks umps
That hurts.
nice call umpires
So a lousy blown call is going to start some problem?
Hopefully not.
Nothing is just simple and easy.
Ground him out Price
The first base umpire must be from Worcester.
do not ! *
do not ! *
do not ! *
David please do pull your AA struggles w/ control here, send Boston home crying.
I second that….
Boy he throws gas hey?
Does he have a quality third pitch? because next year team are going to catch up to him if he doesn’t and they have him as a starter.
Yes his curve ball and change up.
scouts say Price has a developing changeup
but they said Hughes had a developing changeup too
so we’ll have to see how they develop their changeups lol
Ump squeezing Price
You have to be kidding me here…get him out!!!!
2 more outs!!!!
ONE DOWN
Two more to go
Yes strike out, should be 2nd out!
DP!!
Exactly Mike. We here that ALL the time with young pitchers. I’ll believe it when I see it.
LETTING TEK BAT?! TITO WOW.. WOW…
It should be two. It should be two.
Ump squeezing Price
It even’d out. Now lets hope he stays for the last 2 outs.
.053, 1 homer, 1 rbi – tek looks like A-Rod in October so far.
Lets lower that batting average with a DP right here!!
youklis looks like kimbo slice
Heart attack!!!! How about a double play!!!
David is slaying Goliath?
Varitek, this is your last time as the Boston captain!!! SEE-YA!!!!
Can’t catch up to the fastball!Varitek’s last game as a Sox-Hope so! Yes!!
ONE MORE BABY!!
One more to go!!!!!!!
1 MORE DAVID !!!! 1 MORE !!!!!
Ha Ha Rays dugout pumped. Good to see.
how about this for culture change: longoria and price only know winning as a devil ray…
Thanks for playing, Tek, enjoy your free agency!
i can’t watch…i will have a heart attack….please TB, close them out!!!!!!!!
See ya cap’n!
They are not dead yet…stay calm Rays!!
I would think most pitchers could develop a change up. It might take time because it is a feel pitch more than anything else. Besides, if you throw mid 90′s with Joba’s or Price’s slider all you need is an average change to be effective.
David is slaying Goliath.
What symmetry there would be in their biggest rookie taking down this team of veterans who couldn’t be beaten.
Oh, how sweet it is!
Bye Bye Bosox
holy COW…the Rays are going to the World Series and Boston isn’t!!! this must be a dream!!!!
RAYS WIN
RAYS WIN
RAYS WIN
LETS GO PHILLES!!!
THE RED SOX ARE DONE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THE SOX ARE DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
that feels good
YES!!!! Congrats to the Rays
Now-Let’s go Phillies!!!
They just killed David Price, but otherwise WOO HOOOO!
Yowza!!!!!! Thank you Rays!
WE DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THE FAIRYTALE CONTINUES
RAYS WIN
good for the rays – that was great…
See you next year Sawx.
thankful they didn’t win in game 5.
this is better
: )
WHOO!!! I can go to sleep tonight at peace with myself!
YESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bye Bye Boston!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1. talk of the Sux “dynasty” is dead at last
2. I TOLD YA THEY’D WIN!!!!!
Sox can now join the Yankees on the golf courses.
Thank god. I could not stand hearing the Red Sox called a “dynasty”.
Varitek’s last time as Captain! Boston isn’t is going to World Series!!
woohooo!!!
wait i dont get it
from 9=8 to 9=2???
Matt Garza was gracious enough to thank the Yanks for beating the Sox so they couldn’t clinch the division. Tonight I’d like to thank Matt Garza for beating the Sox so they couldn’t clinch the penant.
Good Job Rays!
Trisha – you called it this morning. Nice job. Glad that the Sox are gone!!
Giants-11/Rays parlay + winnnahhhh!
And da RAAAAAYS win!
Thank you very much. Job well done.
Now, Go Phillies!
i so want to drive to tampa and PARTYYYYYYYYYY
Damn, Sager. What the hell.
Sox lose, Jets win
what a great day!
Mel – I second that. Let’s go Phillies!!
Ahem. What did mel say about Garza yesterday?
I am sincerely happy for this Rays team, thank God it’s over, my heart was beating so hard I almost forgot it wasn’t the Yankees playing!
“Laura
October 19th, 2008 at 12:06 pm
TB is done. Stick a fork in them. No way Lester pitches poorly two times in a row.
Get ready for another BOS World Series win because I don’t see PHI getting past them either.”
It’s amazing how many people look silly right now. How many times in the past four days did I read about how Tampa was done?
All the silly Baseball God talk earlier today as well and now you all look really silly.
I guess this kills all the talk about a so called Boston dynasty as well. Yay!
Fran, on the souls of my parents in Heaven, I swear I knew they were going to do it. Since it made no sense logically, I went with it since it was a total gut feeling but that feeling never left me.
GOD BLESS THE RAYS.
Rays World Series. Home field advantage, thanks to Kazmir, winning pitcher in All-Star game!! With the Rays starting pitching they should be in every game! Go Rays!
This is great because I don’t have to listen to Francesa kiss the Sox A$$ anymore.
could someone explain the 9=8? i’m pretty confuse with it.
Ok, now lets go Phillies!!!
BJ Upton tried to go Paul O’Neil and jump over the top of the pile lol
I can smile at work tomorrow to the Red Sox bandwagon fans
P.S. Carl Crawford has some crazy hops !
Tampa in 5…..Sorry Tricia, I just don’t see the Phillie’s pitching matching up at all….They certainly don’t have Boston’s staff ….
“1. talk of the Sux “dynasty†is dead at last”
AMEN TO THAT!!!!!
phillies/rays = FUN FUN FUN world series…
i can’t wait to watch.
football + basketball can’t hold BASEBALL’S JOCK!!!
Tisha you officially get my permission to jinx anything you want!
Sager: What were you thinking when you got the ball?
Price [About time, Maddon you dink]
Spike:
Their motto in spring training was that 9 (players on the field working together) can get you one of the 8 postseason spots. Hence 9=8.
Now there are only 2 postseason spots left so 9=2.
Trevor,
You mean you don’t enjoy Mike slurping Pedroia, Youkallis, Papelbon and then throws Ellsbury/Masterson into the mix and complaining how we have no young players?
Happy days are hear again! I must say I’m shocked that the Rays played such a great game under the most pressurized conditions, but wow – I give credit to Maddon and their kids. I’m most happy that Sux fans are going to cry in their beers tonight – they probably were starting to think the WS was their birthright.
I don’t love the Rays (actually, I don’t like them at all), but I admire them a great deal and I respect them (still haven’t forgotten the ST incident with Cervelli). Anyteam that can take a blow from the Sox and still remain standing is a heck of a team.
9=8 was something Maddon came up with. 9 guys playing hard every game will lead to one of the 8 postseason spots, hence 9=8.
Not the most innovative catch phrase but what the heck! Maybe the Yanks can borrow it next year.
“Sox lose, Jets win
what a great day”
I hate to break the news to you…………well actually not but the Jets lost…
Wow ok, so I was on here all day moaning about how the Rays had 0 chance. I couldn’t have been more negative.
I’m so happily shocked I can’t describe this.
And now Boston has to wonder did they just blow Lesters arm for nothing?
PAT M since I didn’t pick the Phillies there is nothing you need to be sorry for. At least in terms of what you just posted.
I can smile at work tomorrow to the Red Sox bandwagon fans
same here, and class. my professor a Red Sox fan, and now i could laugh at him. lol
I am back tail in between legs. Rays are the real deal. Next season we have to worry about those guys.
red sox showed the heart of champions tonight, props to them.
Phillies in 6 they’re more loose and ready.
Tampa Bay Rays are to Boston what Anaheim was to us.
Too bad. I think the Rays found a closer for the postseason.
Phillies better be ahead by the 7th.
Cue the duckboats Boston.
No dynasty Sox, you don’t have what it takes to repeat Sox..let alone 3-peat like the Yankees in 98-2000, you just don’t have it…you have not repeated, you are not a dynasty!!!
By the way…do they ever report how many guys get injured in the pileups, Price looked like he could have gotten hurt…
Is Steve Phillips really braggin up the Red Sux right now on ESPN. What a Joke.
AROD fan -
THANKS!!!!!
9=8 was something Maddon came up with. 9 guys playing hard every game will lead to one of the 8 postseason spots, hence 9=8.
thanks.
Steve you and Peter Gammons can go and hold each other.
Jets blew up out in Oakland but this more than makes up for that failure. Go Rays!
Of course, ESPM starts their segment talking about the great organization that is the Red Sox.
My reaction in song.

Until Price could develop a third pitch I would keep in the pen.
Brad Lidge pitching for National NLA ALA
B McCann catching. 3 3
B Lidge relieved B Webb. 3 3
J Morneau singled to shallow center. 3 3
I Kinsler lined out to left. 3 3
D Navarro singled to center, J Morneau to second. 3 3
J Drew walked, J Morneau to third, D Navarro to second. 3 3
M Young hit sacrifice fly to right, J Morneau scored.
NL loses 4-3 Lidge loses game, Kazmir winner in Yankee Stadium. An omen/fate with the Rays??
Anybody else think the story of David Price is similar to Joba. Dominant starter/ converted to reliever temporarily. Blistering fastball and filthy slider. I see a lot of similarities.
“I am back tail in between legs. Rays are the real deal. Next season we have to worry about those guys.”
Nah.. We played well against them this year.
Al, I’m starting to think we have to worry about the Rays this season too.
And now because I feel I have somehow earned the right to say it, I am going to say it.
BOSTON SUCKS.
They were overrated and had a lot of our posters quaking in their boots.
Thank you.
And don’t waste your breath if you feel the need to praise them to make your own predictions look better. They blew it and the Rays did not.
GO MY RAYS!!!!!!
And whoever said Carl Crawford was overrated is definitely not watching with open eyes. The guy is tremendous.
S. Kazmir vs. C. Hamels
J. Shields vs. B. Myers
M. Garza vs. J. Moyer
A. Sonenstein vs. J. Blanton
Al from BK – I am not so sure that this make up for that Jet mess today. That was one of the worst games I have seen them play against a team they should have easily beat.
it’s funny how there’s no Boston trolls right now!! lol
THANK YOU RAYS THANK YOU RAYS
i dont care if i sound like a bitter yankee fan tonight, no smug looks tmrw from boston fans
i will say they are a tough team, went down like a champ, reminiscent of the 2001 yankees – francona a class act –
but THANK YOU TAMPA THANK YOU TAMPA
F*CK YEAH!!!!!!!!
I wonder if all the little Boston fans are still happy they traded Manny.
Awesome for them. Man I can’t calm down over here!
Thank god for Jason Varitek.
I’m glad that half way through the intro they finally stopped the music
I think Garza should be AL MVP
There’s definitely similarities between Joba and Price. but Joba has a deeper repertoire then Price does. and a little better command.
trisha – Rhode Island’s finest
Props for always believing.
Sox, now you know how the Yankees felt in 2001, great comebacks and then losing in the playoffs…..nice slide Crisp!!!
The Jets lost today because Mangini continues to play the dink and donk offense. Let Brett throw it, and how can Thomas Jones not get more carries today? Whatever, Rays made up for it.
what’s up with the ALCS brown hats? shouldn’t they be in their team colors? weird.
Are the Rays gonna vote a playoff share to the great Shelley Duncan for getting them fired up for the season?
Where’s youk tonight?
Price didn’t get arrested for DUI, he is obviously far superior to Joba.
It doesn’t make me happy that the Sox fans will be sad.
It’s just that it would make me sad to see them too happy.
How old is Andrew Friedman? He looks like Matt DeSalvo.
I hope those Sox fans who invaded Tampa tonight had a great time at the game.
Dave D -
Thank you my friend.
Mark – you’re right. Mangini was calling the offense like Pennington was still the QB. And I can’t believe that the Jets only had one sack against that horrible Raiders offensive line.
Cant wait to see Boras beg clubs to give Tek “Posada Money”
Nicely done, it was definitely Garza.
Are those ALCS hats sponsored by UPS?
Matt Garza is my hero….
Check that – ALCS MVP Matt Garza is my hero!!
I really can’t believe it.
I was deep in misery days ago, figuring this was just another sox come back story.
I was so so wrong.
Wow.
What a great moment for Garza. They were talking about how upset he was to be traded from Minny.
This season has been such a fantastic story for that franchise. This is what makes the game so great.
Think the Twins would have done a Kennedy, Cabrera deal for Matt Garza last year?? Oh well, one could only wish!!
That Crisp slide really did change that inning. He was clearly there in time but just too worried about taking out Barlett (or Longoria with the Ortiz shift on) to simply tag the base. Bases loaded, 1 out is a lot better than runners on the corners and 2 outs.
“The classiest acts in baseball” wow.
Someone tell randy l. that the Rays just voted to give Livan an ALCS share.
D Man
Are you shocked the Rays won or that you were wrong?
way to beat Aryan Nation!!
Trader,
Twins desperately needed a bat to replace Hunter, they had extra pitching so they shopped Garza for a young bat. Kennedy wouldn’t have been much use to them, their entire rotation has better arms than him.
They are doing essentially what we should be doing with Hughes.
Well Nick in SF, it turned out alright ( $$$ ) after all…..Wonder how much the Tampa Bay Rays will be favored by…..
harwood, who said that about the Sox? Verducci?
As much as I hate a lot of the Sox, I like Terry Francona a lot. The man is a class act, just from the way he manages, to the way he managed the team at the all star game. Have to like Tito.
Francona- “That was a fun group.” Referring to his team. Of course it was fun once that laggard cancer Manny was gone!
Can I get an AMEN. The baseball gods can sit and spin because buddy holly and his tampa bay devil mets are going to the World Series! Congrats rays on doing our dirty work, no go send balfour out there to lose to Cole Hamels, Ryan Howard and the rest of the funky bunch.
Congrats to Harold Reynolds for never wavering from his belief in the Rays.
Can’t wait to see that silly-haired Eckersley.
I think the Phils are a tremendous team. I have to root for the Rays for a thousand reasons. I think we are going to see one hell of a world series.
matt garza is so hot
PAT M, the Bucs game was more important to my $ than this one, but this helped too. Too bad the over didn’t hit, though. Oh well, that was like insurance.
And Harold Reynolds sticks it to “that little fruitcake Eckersley!”
Now the Sux are gone, so we can all focus on Yankee issues.
“harwood, who said that about the Sox? Verducci?”
I think so.
Trisha,
I can now safely vacation in RI next week without any headaches from all my Sox family and friends. Phew.
Last year Matt Garza was declared to be basically a bust by the Twins. So they traded him.
Garz has been a highly thought of prospect for several years now. But his results weren’t matching up to his potential his first two years in the league.
Minnesota got tired of waiting on Garza. They felt that he refused to listen to their coaching. They though he was stubborn and wasn’t willing to get better. So they traded him. At the time of the trade the media and many twins fans were happy to get rid of Garza.
Minnesota’s strength in their system was and is pitching. But none of the guys they had in the minors had the talent of Garza. Not even close.
Garza was fantastic in the playoffs and had a terrific year.
If Garza was on the twins this year they would have made the playoffs easily.
Organizations that lose patience with young pitchers often wind up regretting it.
“Of course it was fun once that laggard cancer Manny was gone!”
Francona is having FUN tonight!
Sports Center has the interviews. Garza is on. It is wonderful. He’s talking about how they were predicted to collapse all season and all postseason.
How about that!
No it was Ernie Johnson Jr.
One of the keys to this series is that Tampa was able to neutralize Jason Bay while the Angels were unable to.
Yes, J*son-freaking-B*ay
“As much as I hate a lot of the Sox, I like Terry Francona a lot. The man is a class act, just from the way he manages, to the way he managed the team at the all star game. Have to like Tito.”
I have to agree. The manager is not what makes me hate this team. Here are the true names that bother me: Youkilis, Papelbon, Pedroia, JD Drew. I have no problem with Tito, the guy is a class act.
“And Harold Reynolds sticks it to “that little fruitcake Eckersley!—
Price didn’t get arrested for DUI, he is obviously far superior to Joba.
Only cool people get arrested for DUI.
JOBA = God
Price = Nun
mel,
You read Olney’s report about how we are prepared to over as much as 40% more money to CC than the 2nd highest bidder to get him to come here? It’s deplorable, this organization just loves mercenaries.
Forget SportsCenter. Stay with TBS and watch what the phony Eckersley had to say!
CB– We all love Phil Hughes, well some of us anyway.
“Until Price could develop a third pitch I would keep in the pen.”
Yeah, he and Joba can play Patty Cake in the pen together when the Rays play the Yanks.
Why did ESPN assign Kruk and Phillips to analyze this game?
Where is Kurkjin, Chris Singleton, Olney etc?
Wait, just watching Nesn, and the great Papelbon just bought up they had to go to Japan, I thought they weren’t going to use that as an excuse?
Organizations that lose patience with young pitchers often wind up regretting it.
True dat
CB,
Nobody is suggesting trading Hughes for Reggie Sanders. Look at the names being discussed– Votto, Bruce, Adrian Gonzalez, Matt LaPorta etc.
Of course, none of them are realistic, but those are the types of players that have been discussed here. Nobody is giving him up for free. You have to be open minded when it comes to prospects, can’t make them all untouchable.
Were the Rays just chanting “No more Dynasty”?
To add to the point of waiting for kids to develop I was thinking James Shields didn’t sit much better than 91mph on his fastball last night and he’s considered a stud, and has pitched damn well this post season. Food for thought.
What a frickin loser Papelsmear is. He always has an excuse.
Congratulations to the Tampa Bay Rays.
I can’t even begin to say how happy I am to not have the Sox in the WS. Yay.
G’night all.
“Why did ESPN assign Kruk and Phillips to analyze this game?”
For some reason, Peter Gammons just called in and said he couldn’t make it in to do the postgame show…he was taking a personal day.
CB, Your point about organizational patience is well noted…The point is how many here will adhere to that theory…I’m not certain there are many……
Paps brought up Japan? Really?
Just when you think you can’t lose any more respect for someone…
CB – but it must me a hard call to know if you should stick with the pitcher or if he just isn’t going to make it. And maybe sometimes could it be a change of scenery? Maybe Garza would never have succeeded in Minnesota.
Talk about flip flopping. So now all of the sportswriters who had picked the Rays until the Sux came back in game 5 and then all of a sudden got on that hideous “here they go again!” bandwagon and switched to the “Sux impossible dream ALCS once again” now have to find a way to, well, write stories about how they had it wrong. Or something.
They’re all losers too. Talk about phony syncophants!
* sycophants
Olney, is the new SI jinx, picked the Rays before the series and then changes to the Sawx this afternoon…towing the company line.
This is bitter sweet…living in RI and having to listen to RSN compare the Sawx to the late 90′s Yankees, is finally over…nevermind shutting up Francessa and ESPN.
The best thin is now I don’t have to care about baseball until next year.
Vader, where in RI are you?
The Real Fans are Yankee fans, Sux fans leave after after the 6th inning in a Game 5 ALCS and Rays fans have only 18,000 people show up until October. Then they all pretend to really be living and dying with every pitch. Yanks in ’09!
Bronx,
Ed posted that this morning and I summarily expressed my disgust.
Nick,
Anyone who refers to themselves as Cinco-Ocho, can’t be taken seriously…I mean he isn’t even original, did he ever hear of a guy named Chad Johnson?
Trish,
Scituate, RI
New post by Pete
Vader I’m in No Prov
Since when do we get overly worked up about Buster Olney reports? Don’t worry, be happy!
Loaded up on the Rays tonight, never a doubt….Except for palpations from pitch one until the bad hop grounder to end the game….
