Bowa to stay with the Dodgers

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Oct 24, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

It was never going to happen, but you can officially forget about Larry Bowa coming back to the Yankees and coaching under Joe Girardi.

The Dodgers announced this afternoon that Bowa would remain with the team as the third base coach. Don Mattingly is also staying on Joe Torre’s staff.

I think the Yankees will look internally to replace Bobby Meacham. But one outside candidate could be Dale Sveum, who the Brewers decided not to keep as their manager.

The speculation was fun while it lasted. Darn you, Joseph Svengali Torre.

  2. paulie October 24th, 2008 at 7:51 pm

Is Mike Gallejo still with the Rockies coaching staff? He’d be a good choice for 3b coach. What about Tim the Rock Raines?

  3. Nick in SF October 24th, 2008 at 7:51 pm

Wow, heavy blogging on a day without baseball. What happened, Pete, did “Lucky Town” get stuck in your cd player and send you to the computer in refuge?

Someone needs to tell Phil Hughes that he’s only a Rising Star pending LuHud blog consensus. It’s tenuous at best.

  4. Tom October 24th, 2008 at 7:54 pm

    paulie

Mike Gallego just joined the A’s

They treated Dale Sveum very shabbily. He takes over, gets them to the playoffs and he’s not even considered for the Brewers job?

    Nick,

I think tonight’s outing will determine Phil’s fate.

  6. DPF October 24th, 2008 at 7:55 pm

    Nick.

Any thoughts on this eve’s football game?

  7. Front Row October 24th, 2008 at 7:56 pm

    Nice going Cashbum

You miss out on Bowa and then Gallego

Terrible. We’ll probably just end up re-hiring Meachum like the Bengals re-signed Rudi Johnson after they cut him.

  8. Al from BK( Fit CC for pinstripes. This team is not far off.) October 24th, 2008 at 7:57 pm

Well I guess we can count on another bad year from Cano next year. Torre is really out to screw his ex-team I bet he begged Bowa to stay, oh well.

  9. vinny-b October 24th, 2008 at 7:57 pm

lovely. I understand Bowa, deciding to remain in LA however.

and forget Sveum. His personality doesn’t fit. Sojo would be a better choice.

Is Suvem a good 3B coach? Is he a motivator like Bowa was?

He had to be pretty average for the Brewers to let him go.

  12. toms river October 24th, 2008 at 7:59 pm

Next thing you know, Torre will snatch away CC from us too.

This off-season is turning into an utter disaster. Thank god the baseball gods let us have some humility and allowed the Rays to win game 7 to eliminate the Sux.

It would be…..amusing at least?

  15. paulie October 24th, 2008 at 8:04 pm

Good to see Gallejo land with the A’s. Don’t be surprised he’s the next hot managerial candidate. The man knows baseball.

I say Tim Raines then. If not, put Tony Pena over 3b, move Rob Thompson over to First Base and get a decent Bench Coach.

  16. Nick in SF October 24th, 2008 at 8:04 pm

DPF: you’re asking me after last night’s overall wipeout? The only thing I won last night was the 2H over in the Auburn game (and a couple teasers are still live).

Well, I don’t think SJS has ever beaten BSU but they’ve played ‘em pretty close in recent meetings, even when BSU was otherwise dominant. I’m taking the points and the over, both straight up, and in a small parlay, and in a couple teasers. Go Spartans!

And go Phil! I still believe. Generation Just Us Two will dominate!

    Sure!

Honestly I could care less who the 3B coach is at this point. Bowa was the ONLY option in my opinion. Anybody else will be the lesser pick as long as it not Meacham I’m alright with it.

  28. E-Man October 24th, 2008 at 8:20 pm

    Joe Girardi for 3b Coach!!!

  29. paulie October 24th, 2008 at 8:21 pm

If you want a no nonsense guy as a 3b coach, go get Ted Yost – formers Brewer manager.

  30. LLIME October 24th, 2008 at 8:22 pm

Why not jist assign Randy Levine to 3B coach? He is obviously the weak link in the organization and will be gone soon.

So, just like Isiah Thomas wasn’t fired and instead re-assigned, why not just assign Levine to be the 3B coach?

    Al,

100% right. girardi gets 1\2 a year tops, then he will be gone and replaced by tony pena.

letting torre go may eclipse not trading for santana as the move that dooms the franchise.

  35. Caps October 24th, 2008 at 8:29 pm

Of Coarse he wants to stay with Torre and the Dodgers who made it to the 2nd round

why would he give that up to work with Girardi who ignored all his coaches this year anyway and has a 3rd place team?

Bowa made the smart choice, can’t blame him for that.

Tony Pena has been with the team for a few years now and has done a great job as a coach, is a great baseball man (former manager of the year), and is well respected. Make him the 3b coach, and hire a new 1b coach…maybe tino?

Girardi gets to mad and can’t internalize his emotions, he lashes out at the media and worst of all his player don’t respect him. He reminded me of Isiah Thomas with the Knicks last year no control and no mutual respect.

  45. pat October 24th, 2008 at 8:35 pm

Hey Burger King Al, the only person I agree with on this blog..
The Yanks are going to have to hire someone for their infielders, bc Pena is in charge of catchers, and Meacham was in charge of the infield.. thats why gallego and bowa wouldve been good fits, we’ll see what happens.. Maybe Tony Fernandez will come out of the woodwork, haha jp

  50. Gary October 24th, 2008 at 8:42 pm

A new bench coach is needed, a fiery no nonsense type. If they wish to retain Rob Thomson, then station him as the 3rd base coach. Don Baylor comes to mind.

Thanks Aaron. I’m glad someone agrees with my drivel. The Yankees need to find a quality 3B coach to handle the runners properly and provide support for the infielders. Meacham was obviously a reach last year and it cost the Yankees a few games.

  53. TKinDC October 24th, 2008 at 8:55 pm

Sveum for 3B coach is Pete’s way of sticking it to Yankee Fans.

When I had the misfortune to live in the Boston media market Dale Sveum was brutalized by the local (bloodthirsty) media for making multiple mistakes waving runners home.

Move Pena over there, put Baylor at 1B and stop blaming managers for player’s performance.

  57. t-rock October 24th, 2008 at 9:03 pm

Baylor is a no brainer… he would be a great mind to have on this staff. I remember last year, ESPN did a special on Girardi being hired and they interviewed Baylor. Ravech asked him if he would like to be our bench coach and he said he’d love to.

“Why not make IPK or Alan Horne the 3B coach?”

IPK post-game. “So what the runner got tagged out at home. Oh well I’m not heart-broken or anything, I don’t see a problem with it. No big deal I told him it was my bad its all good, I’m not gonna let it bother me whats done is done.”

  63. Hughes2.50 October 24th, 2008 at 9:17 pm

It is clear that Hughes will have a breakout year this year. I cubically transformed the stats, and it is irrefutable he will go 23-3 with an ERA of 1.81. Write it down, you heard it here first

I’m definitely not sorry for not agreeing with the amateur pitching coaches on this blog who swear they’re right when it comes to pitching mechanics.

Nets have a very bright future… they rebuilt the right way. They knew they were not going anywhere and better to trade their stars a year sooner rather than a year later. Now they have a great collection of talent, their GM is a great drafter too.

As long as the Brooklyn move is still on for them, they are in the drivers seat for the big time FAs and even if they don;t get them, they still have a great collection of young players.

Seriously, what is it with people? Did everybody forget how loyal Bowa is to Torre? That he ripped them for the classless way they’ve handled his departure? That he was the 3B coach of this team, and if he had wanted to stay, he could have?

Oh, and Sveum is a terrible 3B coach, as is Sojo. The Yankees’ next third base coach will probably be somebody we don’t know yet.

  97. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !" October 24th, 2008 at 10:02 pm

Oh I’m not getting carried away that’s whoo Brook reminds me of. Duncan wasn’t fast, he can pass from the post, flash it out, palm it, help defend, defend w/o fouling, has the turn around jumper, the hook shot and can rebound and BOXES OUT. He knows how to do the simple things and doesn’t over do it. He’s going to be a stud in a few yrs.

  98. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !" October 24th, 2008 at 10:03 pm

Ed Lawrence Frank is a horrible coach I’m sorry but that needs to be echoed to the rafters.

  99. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !" October 24th, 2008 at 10:05 pm

Also a big man that hits his FT, you can w/ Brook Lopez all that’s left is experience and bulking up but he can make you look inferior out there as a rookie vs pros. It’s all going to be based on how quick will he adjust to learning the NBA.

  100. jennifer October 24th, 2008 at 10:06 pm

I have one word for Bowa.

BOOOOO I hope you enjoy the fans in LA-LA Land. They come to games in the 4th inning and leave in the 7th. Have fun.

  101. Ramon October 24th, 2008 at 10:07 pm

Brandon, we’re you down with the Gallinari pick? If not who did you want?

  102. mel from Taco Bell October 24th, 2008 at 10:08 pm

Boy, the story about Isiah is getting curiouser and curiouser. The police, Isiah, the son all have conflicting stories. Isiah says it’s the daughter and the son said Isiah’s okay. I hope everything’s okay for them.

  103. Al from BK( Fit CC for pinstripes. This team is not far off.) October 24th, 2008 at 10:08 pm

Where can I watch the afl game?

  105. mel from Taco Bell October 24th, 2008 at 10:09 pm

Guess who landed with Denver? Renaldo Balkman. That was a wild pick.

  106. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !" October 24th, 2008 at 10:10 pm

mel no one knows if it’s a cover up for Zeke either way shame on him. 10 pills ? 10 ? and if it was his daughter he should be paying attention to his family, his son same thing, him he can’t be that stupid. 10 PILLS !

Ramon, No I hated that pick, still hate it ! :x

  107. Devil's Advocate October 24th, 2008 at 10:11 pm

I thought Bowa wanted to return to the East Coast to be with his family?

I guess his loyalty to Torre is more important than his family. The guy was on his staff for 2 season and now he worships him.

Luis Sojo is better anyway, he will relate to the young players specifically Cano and he will be a voice in the clubhouse. He is a true Yankee. In the grand scheme of things, that is more important than waiving guys home. Most 3B coaches are bad anyway.

  108. mel from Taco Bell October 24th, 2008 at 10:11 pm

If you want a no nonsense guy as a 3b coach, go get Ted Yost – formers Brewer manager.

Please explain how you can want a guy to coach 3rd base and you don’t even know his name. The name is NED YOST.

The Isiah story is just bizarre. Somebody is lying.

I never even knew Isiah had a daughter, I knew he had a son who was a DJ and an aspiring hip hop producer.

  112. Patrick October 24th, 2008 at 10:13 pm

Ask Red Sox fans how good Dale Sveum is at 3rd. He’s one of the worst 3b coaches in the majors.

  113. Y26 October 24th, 2008 at 10:14 pm

Wow, I just opened game-day… Hughes looks so different with the glasses and some chin hair. Has that mean stair too.

  114. Ramon October 24th, 2008 at 10:15 pm

Brandon, same here. Still think it was a bad pick.

Who did you want them to pick instead.. Bayless? Gordon?

  115. mel from Taco Bell October 24th, 2008 at 10:15 pm

Isiah’s daughter’s a prep star. He’s telling the papers to get info from the school.

Try espn.com, it’s got it all.

    She’s apparently hypoglycemic.

  116. jennifer October 24th, 2008 at 10:17 pm

That makes no sense, he can tell them what ever he wants. However the school can’t say anything. Heppa!! It sounds like he is the one who od’ed.

  117. Tom October 24th, 2008 at 10:19 pm

I’m not going to judge the Danilo Gallinari pick yet. I’ll wait a year or two.

I hope that Curry and Crawford choose to opt out after this year.

  120. Nick in SF October 24th, 2008 at 10:20 pm

I don’t know much about this “baseball” that you all keep yammering on and on about, so I consulted with a couple experts and they told me this: It’s *possible* that Robbie Cano can still be a productive player without Larry Bowa on the staff. Sounds crazy, I know, but that’s what they told me.

I still feel ok with SJU, but I might feel even better if they could get a first down in this game. There next one will be their first one. But it’s only late in the 2nd quarter…

  121. Kevin October 24th, 2008 at 10:20 pm

I actually thought that wasn’t a bad pick, given that they just missed on K-Love. Not a fan of Gordon, Alexander, or Augustin, no room for Brook on that team, so it was really either him or Bayless. I think Danilo will be good by the time that team is competitive.

  122. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !" October 24th, 2008 at 10:21 pm

Who did you want them to pick instead.. Bayless? Gordon?

Both would have been better choices, heck Brook Lopez would have been a solid choice.

Isiah’s daughter’s a prep star. He’s telling the papers to get info from the school.

And a looker, still it sounds like irresponsible cover up or parenting.

  123. Nick in SF October 24th, 2008 at 10:22 pm

I wouldn’t do it either if I’m the Braves. What’s the point ? Yunel Escobar is a young rising talent Heyward I wouldn’t let go of him as a 3rd player. It’s caught between a rock and hard place.

Top f 2nd, one out, runner on error, 2 Run homer off of Hughes. 1 run unearned.

  143. Al from BK( Fit CC for pinstripes. This team is not far off.) October 24th, 2008 at 10:39 pm

Phils control seems a bit off is this just today or has it been like that the whole fall league. 12 strikes 14 balls currently not that good especially for Phil who relies on control.

  144. GreenBeret7 October 24th, 2008 at 10:39 pm

Top of 2nd, 2 out double off of Hughes.

  145. Front Row October 24th, 2008 at 10:40 pm

Hughes gives up a 2-run HR followed by a double.

Man he is a mess right now

  146. mel from Taco Bell October 24th, 2008 at 10:40 pm

Not looking good. 4-0. Lots of fly balls.

  147. 34hughes October 24th, 2008 at 10:40 pm

    Hughes is getting hammered

  148. tom October 24th, 2008 at 10:41 pm

    Al,

Nothing new. His control has been spotty since his mechanics change in 07. His FB command has really tailed off.

Even during his great playoff games in AAA this year, he was still walking guys. He only went 5 innings and reached 100 pitches in the clinching game IIRC,

  149. patrick max October 24th, 2008 at 10:41 pm

Hughes gives up another HR. he is getting shelled

  150. GreenBeret7 October 24th, 2008 at 10:42 pm

Two Run Homer off of Hughes. Both runs unearned. 4-0, American. Walk by Hughes. Two outs.

  151. Gardner Fan October 24th, 2008 at 10:42 pm

What happened to the groundballs? That was his only saving grace this fall :(

  152. Nick in SF October 24th, 2008 at 10:43 pm

Does Hughes not know that this is his last chance???

If he can’t hack it I suggest a sing-and-trade. Have somone sign Pavano and then trade him to us for Hughes.

  153. Z (sign Sheets) October 24th, 2008 at 10:44 pm

2 HRs, double, and 2 walks in 1.2 innings.

I guarantee he isin’t “working” on things in an All-Star game.

  154. GreenBeret7 October 24th, 2008 at 10:45 pm

Finally three outs. Hughes allows three hits….2 two run homers and a double, walk and 2 strikeout.

  155. Blackdragon905 October 24th, 2008 at 10:45 pm

honestly, i have a hard time believing the phil hughes of 2006 would get lit up as much as he has been, he doesn’t have really any command, and his fastball just doesn’t seem as good, can someone please tell me if he really used to throw harder than what he does now, is it true? and what about the late life on his fastball i always hear, how come he gets lit up as bad as he does if its supposed to have pretty good late life?

  156. Oddessy October 24th, 2008 at 10:46 pm

I must say… it is not encouraging at all that he is getting shelled in what is essentially AA. He has far more experience than any of these guys. He probably has more service time in the majors than most of these guys combined.

I wonder if this changes Cashman’s view on whether or not go have him in the rotation next year and go after a Lowe or someone instead.

  157. Nick in SF October 24th, 2008 at 10:47 pm

We need to make the Moose an offer he can’t refuse. On top of CC.

  158. Fire Meachum October 24th, 2008 at 10:48 pm

BlackDragon— thats because he isin’t the Phil Hughes of 06. He obviously isin’t responding to the tinkering they have done with him. He definitely used to throw harder and his command was light years better than we’ve seen from 07 on.

  159. Jorge Tabata October 24th, 2008 at 10:49 pm

Tell Mussina he can pitch in the rotation until he is 50 and try to get 400 wins.

  160. mel from Taco Bell October 24th, 2008 at 10:49 pm

    Nick,

No thanks to that visual. Hughes’ start is ugly enough as it is.

  161. Al from BK( Fit CC for pinstripes. This team is not far off.) October 24th, 2008 at 10:51 pm

Hughes value is dropping in a series in which he should be dominating. Very bad for the Yankees and for Phil.

  162. MO 42 October 24th, 2008 at 10:52 pm

Not saying he is a bust, but he clearly isin’t the “can’t miss” phenom that we thought he was.

His mental makeup alone will make him a major leaguer, but beyond that who knows. Certainly disappointing. Can’t make any excuses for him anymore.

  163. Blackdragon905 October 24th, 2008 at 10:52 pm

    Fire Meachum,

than why change his mechanics, if it aint broke, don’t fix it? was there injury concerns over it, i thought he was supposed to be very polished when they drafted him?

  164. Nick in SF October 24th, 2008 at 10:54 pm

If Moose actually tried to pitch from on top of CC, Dice-K would complain about it. Tattler.

  165. Guard October 24th, 2008 at 10:54 pm

Al- I think we can forget about Loney, Kemp, Votto etc. now.

Maybe we need to get someone like Bill Hall or Lastings Milledge instead?

They need to pull him from the AFL before he loses anymore value.

  166. Buddy Biancalana October 24th, 2008 at 10:55 pm

    Brandon-

What’s your call on Isiah? Why would he lie about what happened?

  167. igotid88 October 24th, 2008 at 10:56 pm

Hughes is first of all getting his innings up. I would like him to do well every game. But he’s still working on stuff. He should be in the rotation next year.

  168. Nick in SF October 24th, 2008 at 10:57 pm

You’re not supposed to mention astings-lay illedge-may, you might get randon-bay too excited.

  169. 4 x 4 October 24th, 2008 at 10:58 pm

He has dominated Arizona. Good to see.

  180. NOT DALE SVEUM October 24th, 2008 at 11:18 pm

You watching the game within a game with Farmar and Westbrook?

  184. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !" October 24th, 2008 at 11:25 pm

Tommy Hanson- consistently between 92 and 95 mph and would occasionally hit 96 mph.

Hanson started throwing a two-seam fastball in Myrtle Beach, which will give him more movement.

Power fastball is his four-seamer. He loves to challenge hitters with hitters with his fastball, and he’s also got a good slurve (76-78 mph) and changeup (low 80s).

The Braves love Hanson’s aggressiveness. He’s a power pitcher that is going to attack, and as he learned in Myrtle Beach when he backs off he can get in trouble. Hanson has good arm action and when he gets that fastball down in the zone he’s tough to hit.

comparisons: Roy Halladay, Adam Wainwright, Jason Schmidt

Yeh he’s not going anywhere. As for Hughes whoever said for Bill Hall or Lastings should throw thierselves head first into a wall. Ian Kennedy alone gets you those guys.

  185. Ed - looking forward to 2009 October 24th, 2008 at 11:26 pm

  191. Nick in SF October 24th, 2008 at 11:30 pm

How about Billy Ripken for head bat boy? He might have a message for hitters who can’t get the run in from 3rd base with less than 2 outs.

  192. igotid88 October 24th, 2008 at 11:33 pm

meaning if he (Hanson) has a couple of bad or so-so starts. the trade talks would start. Oh let’s trade Hanson for the Blue Jays bat boy.

  193. ANSKY October 25th, 2008 at 12:00 am

Hey does anyone think Shelley Duncan could retie early and coach third? Imagine leading off first and knowing you could score on a single with Shelley as a lead blocker.

  194. Joe Monte October 25th, 2008 at 1:17 am

    Tim Raines for 3B?

  195. Ralph C October 25th, 2008 at 1:18 am

Doesn’t anyone remember that Dale Sveum was the worst third base coach in Red Sox history, making one bad decision after another? I wouldn’tbe shocked if the Yankees now explore a Cano trade.
