Bowa to stay with the Dodgers

Peter Abraham
October
24

It was never going to happen, but you can officially forget about Larry Bowa coming back to the Yankees and coaching under Joe Girardi.

The Dodgers announced this afternoon that Bowa would remain with the team as the third base coach. Don Mattingly is also staying on Joe Torre’s staff.

I think the Yankees will look internally to replace Bobby Meacham. But one outside candidate could be Dale Sveum, who the Brewers decided not to keep as their manager.

The speculation was fun while it lasted. Darn you, Joseph Svengali Torre.

  2. paulie

Is Mike Gallejo still with the Rockies coaching staff? He’d be a good choice for 3b coach. What about Tim the Rock Raines?

  3. Nick in SF

Wow, heavy blogging on a day without baseball. What happened, Pete, did “Lucky Town” get stuck in your cd player and send you to the computer in refuge?

Someone needs to tell Phil Hughes that he’s only a Rising Star pending LuHud blog consensus. It’s tenuous at best.

  4. Tom

Mike Gallego just joined the A’s

  5. mel from Taco Bell

They treated Dale Sveum very shabbily. He takes over, gets them to the playoffs and he’s not even considered for the Brewers job?

    Nick,

I think tonight’s outing will determine Phil’s fate.

  6. DPF

    Nick.

Any thoughts on this eve’s football game?

  7. Front Row

    Nice going Cashbum

You miss out on Bowa and then Gallego

Terrible. We’ll probably just end up re-hiring Meachum like the Bengals re-signed Rudi Johnson after they cut him.

  8. Al from BK( Fit CC for pinstripes. This team is not far off.)

Well I guess we can count on another bad year from Cano next year. Torre is really out to screw his ex-team I bet he begged Bowa to stay, oh well.

  9. vinny-b

lovely. I understand Bowa, deciding to remain in LA however.

and forget Sveum. His personality doesn’t fit. Sojo would be a better choice.

  10. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and show CC the money (and food)!

    Oh darn. :(

  11. goin' for 27

Is Suvem a good 3B coach? Is he a motivator like Bowa was?

He had to be pretty average for the Brewers to let him go.

  12. toms river

Next thing you know, Torre will snatch away CC from us too.

This off-season is turning into an utter disaster. Thank god the baseball gods let us have some humility and allowed the Rays to win game 7 to eliminate the Sux.

  13. yanks 1927

might as well trade cano now.

we will never find anyone to motivate him and he’ll continue to underachieve

  14. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and show CC the money (and food)!

Hank for 3rd base coach! C’mon.
It would be…..amusing at least?

  15. paulie

Good to see Gallejo land with the A’s. Don’t be surprised he’s the next hot managerial candidate. The man knows baseball.

I say Tim Raines then. If not, put Tony Pena over 3b, move Rob Thompson over to First Base and get a decent Bench Coach.

  16. Nick in SF

DPF: you’re asking me after last night’s overall wipeout? The only thing I won last night was the 2H over in the Auburn game (and a couple teasers are still live).

Well, I don’t think SJS has ever beaten BSU but they’ve played ‘em pretty close in recent meetings, even when BSU was otherwise dominant. I’m taking the points and the over, both straight up, and in a small parlay, and in a couple teasers. Go Spartans!

And go Phil! I still believe. Generation Just Us Two will dominate!

  17. Al from BK( Fit CC for pinstripes. This team is not far off.)

“Next thing you know, Torre will snatch away CC from us too.”

    Thats the worst case scenario.

finally saw Rocky Balboa last night. I thought it was okay, it wasn’t really like the orignial but the plot was still interesting. You should watch the film credits though, you will see a MLB star. lol

  19. JoeT 28 in 10.... LETS GO RAYS!!

Dale Sveum would be a nice addition to the staff

DPF – I say Boise by a lot… I haven’t seen San Jose State play, but I have seen Boise and they are very good

  20. Sea Net

    Luis Sojo for 3B coach/

He can’t coach 3rd, but he will be a voice in that clubhouse

Is Suvem a good 3B coach? Is he a motivator like Bowa was?”

no. Sveum is a laid-back, easy going type. Not a manager/leader type.

  22. DPF

    Nick.

Thanks. I like the over. I think though that I like BS -7…

I was cheering for Phil to score one more run but not to win as I had TB -175.

    Oh. Cool! lol
Maybe I will rent it for this weekend or if it’s online somewhere I’ll watch it.
Though I really do feel like watching Rocky IV again! :D

  24. Jorge Tabata

What about Felix the Gardner for 3B coach?

  25. NJ in Tampa

Sveum was a horrible 3rd base coach in Boston.

  26. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and show CC the money (and food)!

What about Felix the Gardner for 3B coach?

and take him away from his very important position with the Yankees hierarchy in which he does..um..stuff that I’m not really sure about?

    Sure!

  27. Al from BK( Fit CC for pinstripes. This team is not far off.)

Honestly I could care less who the 3B coach is at this point. Bowa was the ONLY option in my opinion. Anybody else will be the lesser pick as long as it not Meacham I’m alright with it.

  28. E-Man

    Joe Girardi for 3b Coach!!!

  29. paulie

If you want a no nonsense guy as a 3b coach, go get Ted Yost – formers Brewer manager.

  30. LLIME

Why not jist assign Randy Levine to 3B coach? He is obviously the weak link in the organization and will be gone soon.

So, just like Isiah Thomas wasn’t fired and instead re-assigned, why not just assign Levine to be the 3B coach?

  31. Al from BK( Fit CC for pinstripes. This team is not far off.)

    “Joe Girardi for 3b Coach!!!”

The Yanks should have begged Torre to return. Girardi has no command of this team.

  32. Ed - looking forward to 2009

Rocky Balboa Online the quality isn’t bad.

  33. reacher

Bad News….not a good start to the off-season.

  34. jax gmen

    Al,

100% right. girardi gets 1\2 a year tops, then he will be gone and replaced by tony pena.

letting torre go may eclipse not trading for santana as the move that dooms the franchise.

  35. Caps

Of Coarse he wants to stay with Torre and the Dodgers who made it to the 2nd round

why would he give that up to work with Girardi who ignored all his coaches this year anyway and has a 3rd place team?

Bowa made the smart choice, can’t blame him for that.

  36. West side

Have we sunk that far? Now not only are players rejecting us, so are assistant coaches :(

YOU TWO ARE PATHETIC,lol.. According to you, the Yanks will have a horrible season because we didn’t get Bowa to coach 3b. Is he going to pitch for us too?? calm down

  38. jc

Tony Pena has been with the team for a few years now and has done a great job as a coach, is a great baseball man (former manager of the year), and is well respected. Make him the 3b coach, and hire a new 1b coach…maybe tino?

  39. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and show CC the money (and food)!

    Thanks Ed!

  40. Aaron

West Side, What players are rejecting us??

  41. Sea Net

And why hasn;t Robbie Thompson been reassigned either? We need a new bench coach too.

    no problem. :)

  43. Aaron

I agree, Thompson has to go

    “Al,

Girardi gets to mad and can’t internalize his emotions, he lashes out at the media and worst of all his player don’t respect him. He reminded me of Isiah Thomas with the Knicks last year no control and no mutual respect.

  45. pat

I didn’t expect it to happen but I’m still a little disappointed it didn’t.

Francessa made it sound like Willie has a real shot at the Brewers job. I don’t remember him playing there but good for him if it happens.

  46. DPF

    Nick.

    just took SJ +7.5

I was romanced by the hook. Took the over 41.5..

    Good Luck

  47. Bob

I go with Robby Thompson going to 3rd and Don Baylor as bench coach

  48. Al from BK( Fit CC for pinstripes. This team is not far off.)

I would love to see Tino or maybe Paul O’Neill. Lol.

  49. Aaron

Hey Burger King Al, the only person I agree with on this blog..
The Yanks are going to have to hire someone for their infielders, bc Pena is in charge of catchers, and Meacham was in charge of the infield.. thats why gallego and bowa wouldve been good fits, we’ll see what happens.. Maybe Tony Fernandez will come out of the woodwork, haha jp

  50. Gary

A new bench coach is needed, a fiery no nonsense type. If they wish to retain Rob Thomson, then station him as the 3rd base coach. Don Baylor comes to mind.

  51. Aaron

i’d love to have Don Baylor..

  52. Al from BK( Fit CC for pinstripes. This team is not far off.)

Thanks Aaron. I’m glad someone agrees with my drivel. The Yankees need to find a quality 3B coach to handle the runners properly and provide support for the infielders. Meacham was obviously a reach last year and it cost the Yankees a few games.

  53. TKinDC

Sveum for 3B coach is Pete’s way of sticking it to Yankee Fans.

When I had the misfortune to live in the Boston media market Dale Sveum was brutalized by the local (bloodthirsty) media for making multiple mistakes waving runners home.

Move Pena over there, put Baylor at 1B and stop blaming managers for player’s performance.

  54. Front Row

    Al from Burger King,

Everyone on this blog agrees with you except Condescending Ray and Betsy lol.

  55. Aaron

i would love to see Baylor as part of the organization, but as a bench coach. and find a 3b or move over Pena..

  56. Oddessy

Why not make IPK or Alan Horne the 3B coach?

  57. t-rock

Baylor is a no brainer… he would be a great mind to have on this staff. I remember last year, ESPN did a special on Girardi being hired and they interviewed Baylor. Ravech asked him if he would like to be our bench coach and he said he’d love to.

  58. Al from BK( Fit CC for pinstripes. This team is not far off.)

    “Al from Burger King,

Everyone on this blog agrees with you except Condescending Ray and Betsy lol.”

My goal is not to make everyone agree with me, however those who do I appreciate it. Those who disagree I value their opinions as well even if they may contradict mine.

“Why not make IPK or Alan Horne the 3B coach?”

IPK post-game. “So what the runner got tagged out at home. Oh well I’m not heart-broken or anything, I don’t see a problem with it. No big deal I told him it was my bad its all good, I’m not gonna let it bother me whats done is done.”

  59. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

Eddy Curry standing still, Malik Rose chucking 3’s, Steph still doesn’t know how to play PG

Devin Harris dominating the game, VC posterized someone really bad, Brook Lopez looks like Tim Duncan Jr. and Bobby Simmons playing like Pippen…. Knicks Basketball is fantastic.

  60. t-rock

    Al LOL

  61. NITRO

Knicks started out the pre-season strong but now look like the same old Knicks from last year.

I guess a Zebra never changes its stripes, these players just suck.

  62. Pippi Longstockings

I find it tremendously disappointing that Bowa will not re-sign with us,as he seems to be the only way that that bow wow Cano can play hard and perform. Why do we get all the headcases?

  63. Hughes2.50

It is clear that Hughes will have a breakout year this year. I cubically transformed the stats, and it is irrefutable he will go 23-3 with an ERA of 1.81. Write it down, you heard it here first

  64. Vito The Bozo

I am sad the season is over, as my blind and absolute loyalty to my Yankees is, frankly, embarrasing.

  65. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

Nitro I’ve been preeching this as loud as I CAN !…They are the same team ! preseason means nothing, the fact that thier starters aren’t thier strength is horrible, heck here you have Marbury telling his team to smile while the team is losing to the Nets bench, there’s Area 51 w/ another block.

  66. Bobcat

Eh, total waste of time. I told myself that I would only watch the Knicks if Curry,Z-Bo and Steph were off this team. Until you set up the future and only play our long-term guys like David Lee, Wilson Chandler, Nate, Gallinari and Duhon we will be a total wash like the last 5 years.

  68. Al from BK( Fit CC for pinstripes. This team is not far off.)

  70. Condescending Ray(magnetic)

    “Al from Burger King,

Everyone on this blog agrees with you except Condescending Ray and Betsy lol.”

I never realized that the purpose of life was to agree with everyone else all the time.

I’m definitely not sorry for not agreeing with the amateur pitching coaches on this blog who swear they’re right when it comes to pitching mechanics.

The difference between me and them is that I never acted like I knew what was best for a pitcher that the Yankees have invested millions in.

  71. Ed - looking forward to 2009

    Devin Harris dominating the game

The Nets got the better part of the deal. Woot!! lol

  72. Ed - looking forward to 2009

..and of course the Knicks still can’t play under pressure.

  73. Harry

I guess people forget dale s was terrible with the sox as 3b coach

  74. NITRO

Nets have a very bright future… they rebuilt the right way. They knew they were not going anywhere and better to trade their stars a year sooner rather than a year later. Now they have a great collection of talent, their GM is a great drafter too.

As long as the Brooklyn move is still on for them, they are in the drivers seat for the big time FAs and even if they don;t get them, they still have a great collection of young players.

  75. R-Tek

Ed – Rod Thorn must have gotten Mark Cuban drunk for him to give up Harris for Kidd.

Dallas’ window had already closed and Cuban thought it was still open.

  76. Ed - looking forward to 2009

    R-Tek,

I’m a Nets fan, and I was glad that Harris was acquired. Although Kidd was my favorite, he just wants a ring and I understand that.

  83. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

  85. Al from BK( Fit CC for pinstripes. This team is not far off.)

What channel are the knicks on?

  86. NITRO

I can’t believe we got him for Frederick Weiss LOL

Now watch D’Antoni cut him in favor of Malik Rose or this Roberson kid.

  87. Ed - looking forward to 2009

    AL -

if you have Directv, its on 636

  88. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

Now watch D’Antoni cut him in favor of Malik Rose or this Roberson kid.

That would be an epic failure, I’d cut that Roberson kid or buy out JJ fat. Ewing Jr has an infectious edge to him.

  89. Kevin

Seriously, what is it with people? Did everybody forget how loyal Bowa is to Torre? That he ripped them for the classless way they’ve handled his departure? That he was the 3B coach of this team, and if he had wanted to stay, he could have?

Oh, and Sveum is a terrible 3B coach, as is Sojo. The Yankees’ next third base coach will probably be somebody we don’t know yet.

  90. Al from BK( Fit CC for pinstripes. This team is not far off.)

    “Al – Hows Binghamton?”

Not so well I decided to drop my classes and go back to work full time at least until after the Hollidays, unfortunately school doesn’t put money in the bank.

  91. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

An example of bad coaching from NJ, Brook Lopez good FT shooter for a big man and they let Dooling stroll around w/ that ball and not once did he attempt to get it to BL.

  92. Ed - looking forward to 2009

the last Knicks game I was at, it was the Nate Robertson rejected Yao Ming. It was just craZy….

be back in an hour. later.

  93. Kevin

Hey, I love me some Brook Lopez, but let’s not get carried away with the “Duncan, Jr.” stuff. Also, I wish the Knicks had kept Weis, just so Vince could posterize him five times a year.

  94. mel from Taco Bell

You guys got the gameday up? The national division’s the home team. Jackson’s starting in CF and leading off.

  95. Ed - looking forward to 2009

    sheesh Brandon -

don’t hate. lol, although i just don’t understand Lawernece’s coaching methods sometimes. it’s like Torre coaching the Nets. lol

  96. miggs

I understand there are no sports on tonight, but pre-season NBA? Regular season NBA is barely tolerable to me, the playoffs are great, don’t get me wrong. But pre-season?

I’ll be happy when college basketball starts.

  97. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

Oh I’m not getting carried away that’s whoo Brook reminds me of. Duncan wasn’t fast, he can pass from the post, flash it out, palm it, help defend, defend w/o fouling, has the turn around jumper, the hook shot and can rebound and BOXES OUT. He knows how to do the simple things and doesn’t over do it. He’s going to be a stud in a few yrs.

  98. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

Ed Lawrence Frank is a horrible coach I’m sorry but that needs to be echoed to the rafters.

  99. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

Also a big man that hits his FT, you can w/ Brook Lopez all that’s left is experience and bulking up but he can make you look inferior out there as a rookie vs pros. It’s all going to be based on how quick will he adjust to learning the NBA.

  100. jennifer

I have one word for Bowa.

BOOOOO I hope you enjoy the fans in LA-LA Land. They come to games in the 4th inning and leave in the 7th. Have fun.

  101. Ramon

Brandon, we’re you down with the Gallinari pick? If not who did you want?

  102. mel from Taco Bell

Boy, the story about Isiah is getting curiouser and curiouser. The police, Isiah, the son all have conflicting stories. Isiah says it’s the daughter and the son said Isiah’s okay. I hope everything’s okay for them.

mel no one knows if it’s a cover up for Zeke either way shame on him. 10 pills ? 10 ? and if it was his daughter he should be paying attention to his family, his son same thing, him he can’t be that stupid. 10 PILLS !

Ramon, No I hated that pick, still hate it ! :x

  107. Devil's Advocate

I thought Bowa wanted to return to the East Coast to be with his family?

I guess his loyalty to Torre is more important than his family. The guy was on his staff for 2 season and now he worships him.

Luis Sojo is better anyway, he will relate to the young players specifically Cano and he will be a voice in the clubhouse. He is a true Yankee. In the grand scheme of things, that is more important than waiving guys home. Most 3B coaches are bad anyway.

  108. mel from Taco Bell

Al, no. We decided that Arizona is actually in Pacific time zone because they don’t use daylight savings time.

So, it starts 10:15 your time.

If you want a no nonsense guy as a 3b coach, go get Ted Yost – formers Brewer manager.

Please explain how you can want a guy to coach 3rd base and you don’t even know his name. The name is NED YOST.

  110. mel from Taco Bell

If in fact your Burger King’s in the EST zone.

  111. E-Rod

The Isiah story is just bizarre. Somebody is lying.

I never even knew Isiah had a daughter, I knew he had a son who was a DJ and an aspiring hip hop producer.

  112. Patrick

Ask Red Sox fans how good Dale Sveum is at 3rd. He’s one of the worst 3b coaches in the majors.

  113. Y26

Wow, I just opened game-day… Hughes looks so different with the glasses and some chin hair. Has that mean stair too.

  114. Ramon

Brandon, same here. Still think it was a bad pick.

Who did you want them to pick instead.. Bayless? Gordon?

  115. mel from Taco Bell

Isiah’s daughter’s a prep star. He’s telling the papers to get info from the school.

Try espn.com, it’s got it all.

    She’s apparently hypoglycemic.

  116. jennifer

That makes no sense, he can tell them what ever he wants. However the school can’t say anything. Heppa!! It sounds like he is the one who od’ed.

  117. Tom

I’m not going to judge the Danilo Gallinari pick yet. I’ll wait a year or two.

I hope that Curry and Crawford choose to opt out after this year.

I don’t know much about this “baseball” that you all keep yammering on and on about, so I consulted with a couple experts and they told me this: It’s *possible* that Robbie Cano can still be a productive player without Larry Bowa on the staff. Sounds crazy, I know, but that’s what they told me.

I still feel ok with SJU, but I might feel even better if they could get a first down in this game. There next one will be their first one. But it’s only late in the 2nd quarter…

  121. Kevin

I actually thought that wasn’t a bad pick, given that they just missed on K-Love. Not a fan of Gordon, Alexander, or Augustin, no room for Brook on that team, so it was really either him or Bayless. I think Danilo will be good by the time that team is competitive.

  122. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

Who did you want them to pick instead.. Bayless? Gordon?

Both would have been better choices, heck Brook Lopez would have been a solid choice.

Isiah’s daughter’s a prep star. He’s telling the papers to get info from the school.

And a looker, still it sounds like irresponsible cover up or parenting.

  123. Nick in SF

Tom: I like to be cautious in judging draft picks too.

I’m starting to think that the Frederic Weis pick was flawed.

  124. Al from BK( Fit CC for pinstripes. This team is not far off.)

    Ajax walked good start.

  125. Tom

It was a pick for the future. After D’Antoni has his roster.

Do the knicks have a 1st rd pick this year? I know they owe Utah one either this year or next. Thanks Zeek!

  126. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

I’m not going to judge the Danilo Gallinari pick yet. I’ll wait a year or two.

He has a bulging disk, that’s jumpers cancer right there. He’ll be lucky to play 2-5 yrs. in the NBA.

  127. Tom

Frederic Weis did get the Knicks Ewing II.

  128. mel from Taco Bell

My gameday doesn’t have Phil in glasses, it has him in the Scranton cap.

    Is there another gameday?

  129. mel from Taco Bell

    Happy, happy, joy, joy.

Shawn Livingston’s playing real basketball again. Good for him.

  130. Kevin

I believe they owe the Jazz their pick in 2010. And it’s unprotected.

  131. Nick in SF

My gameday has Phil wearing a cap that says “somebody at LoHud doesn’t love me”. Odd, is that legal?

  132. Tom

“I believe they owe the Jazz their pick in 2010. And it’s unprotected”

I can’t swear here so Balderdash!

  134. mel from Taco Bell

    Nick,

LOL. The logo oddly resembles a big middle finger…

  135. Kevin

    Hey, A-Jax swiped second. Nice.

  136. Clare

    mel,

I still can’t get gameday, so if you can provide some updates I’d really appreciate it.

    Thanks!

  137. mel from Taco Bell

    Jennifer,

Thanks for that. I was stuck with the one from milb.com.

Jackson got to 3rd on the steal and throwing error, but Hanson struck out the side.

Atlanta’s said to be balking at sending their top prospects for Peavy.

  138. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

Atlanta’s said to be balking at sending their top prospects for Peavy.

I wouldn’t do it either if I’m the Braves. What’s the point ? Yunel Escobar is a young rising talent Heyward I wouldn’t let go of him as a 3rd player. It’s caught between a rock and hard place.

  139. mel from Taco Bell

    Here you go, Clare.

Recap will show you the play by play, just keep refreshing it.

    Batter reached on 3B error.

    http://mlb.mlb.com/milb/stats/.....n_afnwin_1

  140. Ramon

Why don’t these stats count towards the normal AFL stats?

  141. Clare

    Thanks mel.

  142. GreenBeret7

Top f 2nd, one out, runner on error, 2 Run homer off of Hughes. 1 run unearned.

  143. Al from BK( Fit CC for pinstripes. This team is not far off.)

Phils control seems a bit off is this just today or has it been like that the whole fall league. 12 strikes 14 balls currently not that good especially for Phil who relies on control.

  144. GreenBeret7

Top of 2nd, 2 out double off of Hughes.

  145. Front Row

Hughes gives up a 2-run HR followed by a double.

Man he is a mess right now

  146. mel from Taco Bell

Not looking good. 4-0. Lots of fly balls.

  147. 34hughes

    Hughes is getting hammered

  148. tom

    Al,

Nothing new. His control has been spotty since his mechanics change in 07. His FB command has really tailed off.

Even during his great playoff games in AAA this year, he was still walking guys. He only went 5 innings and reached 100 pitches in the clinching game IIRC,

  149. patrick max

Hughes gives up another HR. he is getting shelled

  150. GreenBeret7

Two Run Homer off of Hughes. Both runs unearned. 4-0, American. Walk by Hughes. Two outs.

  151. Gardner Fan

What happened to the groundballs? That was his only saving grace this fall :(

  152. Nick in SF

Does Hughes not know that this is his last chance???

If he can’t hack it I suggest a sing-and-trade. Have somone sign Pavano and then trade him to us for Hughes.

  153. Z (sign Sheets)

2 HRs, double, and 2 walks in 1.2 innings.

I guarantee he isin’t “working” on things in an All-Star game.

  154. GreenBeret7

Finally three outs. Hughes allows three hits….2 two run homers and a double, walk and 2 strikeout.

  155. Blackdragon905

honestly, i have a hard time believing the phil hughes of 2006 would get lit up as much as he has been, he doesn’t have really any command, and his fastball just doesn’t seem as good, can someone please tell me if he really used to throw harder than what he does now, is it true? and what about the late life on his fastball i always hear, how come he gets lit up as bad as he does if its supposed to have pretty good late life?

  156. Oddessy

I must say… it is not encouraging at all that he is getting shelled in what is essentially AA. He has far more experience than any of these guys. He probably has more service time in the majors than most of these guys combined.

I wonder if this changes Cashman’s view on whether or not go have him in the rotation next year and go after a Lowe or someone instead.

  157. Nick in SF

We need to make the Moose an offer he can’t refuse. On top of CC.

  158. Fire Meachum

BlackDragon— thats because he isin’t the Phil Hughes of 06. He obviously isin’t responding to the tinkering they have done with him. He definitely used to throw harder and his command was light years better than we’ve seen from 07 on.

  159. Jorge Tabata

Tell Mussina he can pitch in the rotation until he is 50 and try to get 400 wins.

  160. mel from Taco Bell

    Nick,

No thanks to that visual. Hughes’ start is ugly enough as it is.

  161. Al from BK( Fit CC for pinstripes. This team is not far off.)

Hughes value is dropping in a series in which he should be dominating. Very bad for the Yankees and for Phil.

  162. MO 42

Not saying he is a bust, but he clearly isin’t the “can’t miss” phenom that we thought he was.

His mental makeup alone will make him a major leaguer, but beyond that who knows. Certainly disappointing. Can’t make any excuses for him anymore.

  163. Blackdragon905

    Fire Meachum,

than why change his mechanics, if it aint broke, don’t fix it? was there injury concerns over it, i thought he was supposed to be very polished when they drafted him?

  164. Nick in SF

If Moose actually tried to pitch from on top of CC, Dice-K would complain about it. Tattler.

  165. Guard

Al- I think we can forget about Loney, Kemp, Votto etc. now.

Maybe we need to get someone like Bill Hall or Lastings Milledge instead?

They need to pull him from the AFL before he loses anymore value.

  166. Buddy Biancalana

    Brandon-

What’s your call on Isiah? Why would he lie about what happened?

  167. igotid88

Hughes is first of all getting his innings up. I would like him to do well every game. But he’s still working on stuff. He should be in the rotation next year.

  168. Nick in SF

You’re not supposed to mention astings-lay illedge-may, you might get randon-bay too excited.

  169. 4 x 4

The most concerning part is the 23 strikes-22 balls, moreso than the runs he has given up.

  170. K-Zone

Time to watch Oklahoma City Thunder pre-season basketball!

    I know Mel is!

  171. mel

    K-zone,

    You know it!

  172. Clint

They showed Isiah’s mansion on the local news… a very nice estate.

ABC sticks to their story that it was Isiah himself who was overdosed.

  173. O*Line

    That’s it for Hughes – 3 IP, 1 ER, 3 K

Very nice outing for our future ace, in an All-Star game under the bright lights.

He has dominated Arizona. Good to see.

  174. mel

If it turns out that it was Isiah, and he tried to deflect, I don’t know what to think.

  175. Ramon

Did O*Line forget to type “j\k”?

  176. Clint

    mel,

That would just be deplorable if he used his daughter to cover up for him. But Isiah is a snake, so nothing would surprise me.

  177. Ed - looking forward to 2009

Hanson is nasty. 7 Ks in 3 innings. nasty!!! No wonder the Braves isn’t giving him up for Peavy!!

  178. Newark Bears

Yes, the 2 HRs, double, 2 walks, HBP and 27-23 strike-ball ratio in 3 innings was awesome tonight.

  179. R-Tek

Hanson is a big time prospect… Braves shouldn’t trade him for Peavy

  180. NOT DALE SVEUM

Dale Sveum is a horrible 3rd base coach. Worse than Meachum by far. Ask a few Sox fans what they thought of him when he was in Boston. Not a good idea. Literally anyone would be a better choice.

  181. Soul

Braves have a very nice young core developing.. they will be trouble for the Mets soon. Heyward, Schaffer, Julio Theran, Hansen plus guys like Jurrjens, Escobar, Johnson at the MLB level/ Hell maybe even Francour turns it around.

  182. igotid88

No. But most everyone here will.

  183. mel

    K-Zone,

You watching the game within a game with Farmar and Westbrook?

  184. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

Tommy Hanson- consistently between 92 and 95 mph and would occasionally hit 96 mph.

Hanson started throwing a two-seam fastball in Myrtle Beach, which will give him more movement.

Power fastball is his four-seamer. He loves to challenge hitters with hitters with his fastball, and he’s also got a good slurve (76-78 mph) and changeup (low 80s).

The Braves love Hanson’s aggressiveness. He’s a power pitcher that is going to attack, and as he learned in Myrtle Beach when he backs off he can get in trouble. Hanson has good arm action and when he gets that fastball down in the zone he’s tough to hit.

comparisons: Roy Halladay, Adam Wainwright, Jason Schmidt

Yeh he’s not going anywhere. As for Hughes whoever said for Bill Hall or Lastings should throw thierselves head first into a wall. Ian Kennedy alone gets you those guys.

  185. Ed - looking forward to 2009

    Brandon -

    you got that from BA?

  186. K-Zone

Yeah I did… I was flipping in and out, but damn, Farmar is a stud.

All the pieces are there for LA to win it this year, Last year should help them tremendously. I’m a Knicks fan, so I’m from the outside looking in lol

  187. Ed - looking forward to 2009

No. But most everyone here will.

  188. Ed - looking forward to 2009

    what you talking about???*

  189. LLIME

I know this is a strange suggestion, but what about Cal Ripkin JR for 3B coach?

  190. Ed - looking forward to 2009

    update….

  191. Nick in SF

How about Billy Ripken for head bat boy? He might have a message for hitters who can’t get the run in from 3rd base with less than 2 outs.

  192. igotid88

meaning if he (Hanson) has a couple of bad or so-so starts. the trade talks would start. Oh let’s trade Hanson for the Blue Jays bat boy.

  193. ANSKY

Hey does anyone think Shelley Duncan could retie early and coach third? Imagine leading off first and knowing you could score on a single with Shelley as a lead blocker.

  194. Joe Monte

    Tim Raines for 3B?

  195. Ralph C

Doesn’t anyone remember that Dale Sveum was the worst third base coach in Red Sox history, making one bad decision after another? I wouldn’tbe shocked if the Yankees now explore a Cano trade.
