interesting choice to add hinske. Rays win tonight

  2. GreenBeret7 October 26th, 2008 at 8:12 pm

It’s not like the Devil Rays had a better choice as a left handed bat, or any other bat for that matter.

  3. Nick in SF October 26th, 2008 at 8:14 pm

Slugfest? Hope so, we’ve had two unders and a push so far. Break out the bats!

  4. Tom October 26th, 2008 at 8:18 pm

Sonnanstine is a control pitcher who hasn’t pitched in 12 days and Joe Blanton is, well, Joe Blanton.

    Many runs will be scored.

  5. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Staying to write the story October 26th, 2008 at 8:18 pm

We’re overdue for a slugfest, right?

  6. GreenBeret7 October 26th, 2008 at 8:22 pm

Good God, that was brutal. I’ve heard cat fights that were more on key and pleasing to the ear.

  7. Mark in Tampa October 26th, 2008 at 8:22 pm

Glad to see Patti LaBelle had the opportunity to honor herself with her own version of our Anthem.

Singers with their own interpretations of our National Anthem are about as good to see as umpires with their own strikezone interpretations.

And, memo to labelle: it’s perilious FIGHT, not FLIGHT. If it was a flight, we wouldn’t be here. Nice work!

GB7, you need to say how you really feel. You hold back too much!!!!

    Actually I agree with you.

I went to a SI Yankee game this year and the poor girl forgot the words.
I was hoping Mo Cheeks was there.

LMAO. Evening Ray..and how are the Mrs. all of the little (Sox Fans) doing?

LaBelle couldn’t sing 30 years ago and she hasn’t improved a bit since then.

    *has the game on mute*

The only one that I’ve heard that bad was Carl Lewis….or as Charlie Steiner called him, “Francis Scott Off-Key”.

we need a congressional hearing on umpires. would hgh make them better? can we get them some?

  25. AG October 26th, 2008 at 8:48 pm

I’d like to think I’m a somewhat mature person, but even I giggled at that close-up and the amount of time they spent on it.

Clearly I’ve watched too much baseball, but the way Sonnanstine moves around on the mound reminds me of Moose.

The Phillies have been Yankee-esque in this series as far as RISP go.

  28. Trevor October 26th, 2008 at 8:51 pm

Phillies offense has been atrocious in this series.

  29. Steve October 26th, 2008 at 8:56 pm

did MLB direct FOX not to use Fox Tracker tonight?
they squeezed Sonanstine majorly in the first few at batsand didn’t replay one pitch

I bet they did, seeing as how last night the umps looked brutal

  30. Al from BK( Fit CC for pinstripes. This team is not far off.) October 26th, 2008 at 8:59 pm

Steve- Umps in this series have been awful. They really shouldn’t have put out the Jr. circuit for the World Series.

  31. OldYanksFan October 26th, 2008 at 9:10 pm

It is time to madate that umpires take steroids. (Improves vision and reflexes.)

  32. Steve October 26th, 2008 at 9:11 pm

I wish one of the networks would create a 3D prism and show the ball pass through it

  33. Mark in Tampa October 26th, 2008 at 9:23 pm

I have heard McCarver make that statement several times about a fielder making an error in the shift on a very easy ground ball. He “is not used to fielding a ball in that position”.

I assume that McCarver must get in a car accident every time he drives on an unfamiliar road. Or maybe Bob Gibson still drives him around.

  34. abcd October 26th, 2008 at 9:26 pm

looks like all teams that wear pinstripes must leave runners at 3rd with less than 2 outs…

  35. abcd October 26th, 2008 at 9:26 pm

mccarver’s just for men has seeped into his brain…

  36. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and show CC the money (and food)! October 26th, 2008 at 9:27 pm

I feel like I am watching the Yankees

  37. abcd October 26th, 2008 at 9:38 pm

i wonder if runs per game go down in the world series. you figure you have the better pitchers in the league. you also have hitters who haven’t faced them much. as well as the added pressure of the post season. so those slugfests everyone is hoping for may be few and far between in world series play…

  38. jennifer October 26th, 2008 at 9:45 pm

sa I said the same thing in the previous thread. The Phillies can’t hit with risp!! Just like our lovely Yankees!!

Royals exploring deal to send Teahen to Indians for outfielder
    By BOB DUTTON
    The Kansas City Star
PHILADELPHIA | The Royals are discussing a possible trade with the Cleveland Indians in which they would acquire an outfielder in exchange for Mark Teahen, according to sources with both teams.

Talks are believed to center on three possibilities for the Royals in the deal: Franklin Gutierrez, Ben Francisco and minor-leaguer Trevor Crowe. All three trade targets are capable of playing center field, which would permit the Royals to shift David DeJesus, as they have long desired, on a full-time basis to left field.

Why wouldn’t the Yankees be interested in Ben Francisco, power righty with 12 outfield assists who can play CF? Make a trade for him and Ryan Garko, for some of our bullpen arms that the Indians need, plus Wilson Betemit to fill their void at third.

My guess is Teixeira will not be a Yankee, nor will the Yankees be trading Cano for Kemp!

This game stinks-rotten play, bad officiating. Time to get ready to watch Entourage!

  46. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !" October 26th, 2008 at 9:55 pm

Rebecca lets see if coach Frank does the right thing this week supposively Yi is starting at PF the center will be between Josh Boone and Brook Lopez, Lopez has outplayed Boone by miles in the preseason if it’s a performance decision Lopez should start at C this coming week, if it’s a “my guy” situation he’ll go w/ Boone. Me I’d pick Lopez. How about you ?

  47. GreenBeret7 October 26th, 2008 at 9:58 pm

The Yanks don’t have a third baseman to send to Cleveland and Teahen was a third baseman until KC drafted and brought up Gordon and he was moved to right field so Butler could play firt base (which he can’t).

  48. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Staying to write the story October 26th, 2008 at 9:58 pm

  49. Mark in Tampa October 26th, 2008 at 10:01 pm

“plus Wilson Betemit to fill their void at third.”

Wilson Betemit IS a void at third!

But I wouldn’t mind seeing Francisco or Gutierrez in NY, I just don’t think they will take our trash for either one of them.

What is on Blanton’s hat? Some kind of shiny, glossy substance. Right in the middle of the brim. Touches it after each pitch. I know they checked it, but he is going there for a reason. Vaseline?

  65. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !" October 26th, 2008 at 10:25 pm

“Man if the Mets fans are watching this they got to be saying “this could have been us”.

    Jackson is garbage.

  69. Mark in Tampa October 26th, 2008 at 10:26 pm

Tonight, Blanton looks like Kenny Rogers did in ’06 against us. A garbage pitcher pulling the game of his life out of who know’s where. Let’s not bemoan the pick we gave up that became Blanton; he has never, and never will be, a good pitcher except for this night.

  70. Nick in SF October 26th, 2008 at 10:30 pm

I think Jackson’s going to be a really fine pitcher in the next couple of years. Grea arm and finally learning to get it over the plate with more consistency. He’s barely 25 years old and seems likehe’s been around forever.

  83. Tom October 26th, 2008 at 10:46 pm

Green, I thought if pitchers weren’t stars by the time the were 22 they were not worth waiting around for.

  84. Clare October 26th, 2008 at 10:47 pm

Listening to this garbage makes me really, really, appreciate the YES announcers – even Michael Kay.

  85. mel from Taco Bell October 26th, 2008 at 10:48 pm

From the espn world series blog:
Ryan Howard added his name to a ridiculously short list of Phillies who have hit three-run home runs in a World Series game. The others:

    Bake McBride, Game 1, 1980
    Jim Eisenreich, Game 2, 1993
    Lenny Dykstra, Game 6, 1993

Only McBride’s home run was hit in Philadelphia.

Just for comparison’s sake, the Yankees have hit 40 three-run World Series homers, plus 10 grand slams. Of course, they’ve had slightly more opportunities to hit those homers than the Phillies.

    :)

  86. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !" October 26th, 2008 at 10:49 pm

    GB7,

Pretty sure Tom was sarcastically referring to everyone who wants to give up on Phil already.

But I agree with you. Jackson will be really dangerous if he ever puts it all together. Just what the division needs – another ace for Tampa.

  94. Sea Net October 26th, 2008 at 10:59 pm

If Bruney was allowed to have facial hair, he would be a Joe Blanton clone.

Speaking of Bruney, Did anyone realize how lights out he was this year? He put in the hard work to lose weight and improve his attitude and it paid huge dividends.

Oh, yeah, I know he was, Clare, but, that’s the thoughts by a lot of people. I actually think that they may move Jackson over the winter, though. Not sure where, but, maybe for bullpen help and prospects.

Charlie is managing the way he should… the season has only a few more days left. Fatigue is not an issue. Their relievers might pitch everyday for the rest of the World Series.

Lock up this game and go up 3-1 with your ace tomorrow. Don’t take any chances.

  98. Clare October 26th, 2008 at 11:03 pm

    Sea Net,

The most impressive thing about Bruney this year was his refusal to get season-ending surgery and making it back to help down the stretch.

I’m still LOLing about Blanton’s home run. Meanwhile it looks like Eva Longoria used up all his good defensive plays in the regular season. Not to mention hitting. Bad time for him to run out of gas but I knew it would happen sometime and that he was too young to be playing good baseball this deep into the winter.

Anyway, I have been living in Philly since 2005 and watched them go from also rans to a genuine championship caliber team, so I am happy for them (as well as for the impending misery of Mets fans, haha) but I am starting to genuinely fear riots will ensue throughout the city when they wrap this one up! I am in Jersey right now and will be through game 7, but can only hope and pray that my house and my loved ones will still be in one piece when I return!

    on a different subject:

i think the yankees made a huge mistake giving out all those huge contracts.jeter,arod,posada.

the only contract i like is mo,wang, cano.

if arod’s contract pays for itself like i hear it does that might be an exeption.

i see players putting up better numbers than damon, matsui, jeter, the list goes on and on and get payed half of what the yankees players do.

    becket,10 million,schilling,13 million.

pettitte made 6 million more than becket.

the yankees have to put a stop to this now.

overbidding for sabathia is insanity,i would not sign him or tex until total team payroll allows them the flexibility to do so like the red sox.

    they can take on tex.

you can build a winning team with a 180 million dollar payroll.

i’d like to see the yankees sign a few innings eaters.they have wang, joba and need to make that work.

signing cc for 25 million and 7 years and still not win it all would be devastating.

i am not saying putting scrubs on the field but get better at getting the most out nof you’re dollar in wich the yankees are by far last in the majors.

damon, matsui are not far from being bench players and make 13 million a year.

pettitte should be the 4th pitcher, joba 5,wang one or two.sign 2 reasonable pitchers or go with what we have.

trade prospects to bring in a centerfielder and or a first baseman that won’t cost what tex will.trade cano for pitching first, centerfielder, first baseman second.

it is cheaper to overpay in the draft then to overpay in free agency and the players are under controll longer and are much younger.

you get much more in return if you trade a longoria, garza, etc… than you get trading a damon, matsui if it’s even possible to trade an older player making 13 million a year.

the yankees are doing the worse possible thing, signing old players to long contracts and it is catching up to them now.

they have to turn the tides and get a whole new outfield, first baseman, catcher.

the good thing is that damon, matsui, nady, marte, jeter could all be gone soon or the yankees have the choice with them.

nady and marte should be traded to bring in players.

the yankees should of used tabata, olendorf, karsens to bring in players that are young and fixed real problems that the team has like a catcher, first baseman and centerfielder not 2 future free agents that will demand big bucks.

The Yankees are going to have payroll flexibility. They have somewhere between 60 and 80 million to spend this offseason and Damon (13 mil.) and Matsui (13 mil.) comming off the books next year.

That’s 106(!) million bucks comming off the books in 2 seasons.

And with Austin Jackson, Joba, Hughes, and most of the bullpen arms being cheap and cost effective the Yankees do have payroll flexibility…..

  183. YANKS IN 2010 October 27th, 2008 at 10:33 am

The flaw in the plan…is that no one wants our young starters…the rockies don’t want to trade a perennial MVP candidate for a pitcher that can’t get through the AFL…

  184. Frankie Speaking . . . October 27th, 2008 at 10:43 am

Many forget that it was the Angels that were supposed to run away with everything in the postseason.
Like any team, they have work to do over the winter.

  185. inc. October 27th, 2008 at 10:44 am

How is it a certainty that “no one wants our young starters”? First of all, there are other “young starters” in the system besides Hughes and Kennedy. Second, I think the excessive negativity that surrounds Hughes at this point is pretty silly. Moving him in the wrong deal (for, say, a player who will be a free agent after the 2009 season like Matt Holliday)is selling him when his stock is probably at its lowest point–and it’s a stock that in the not-too-distant past was as high as “best pitching prospect in baseball”. By no means do I believe that the Rockies wouldn’t want him in a package for a soon-to-be-FA because he can’t post gaudy numbers in the AFL. Likewise, I don’t see the logic in trading him as he struggles in the AFL for someone that for all intents and purposes could under-perform in NY and then bolt after a year.

  186. Tom October 27th, 2008 at 10:45 am

Yup Hughes was a complete and abysmal failure in the AFL.

    players in general,not them.

i just don’t like the idea of having a huge contract at every position and not even coming close to the world series.

    it doesn’t work.

the yankees should of spent a lot of the money on pitching when the price of pitching was reasonable by comparison.

instead they spent it on position players.

whatever it takes to build a winning team and have a reasonable payroll i am all for.
it is very complex but i don’t think giving sabathia 25 million for 7 years is smart,if he get’s hurt it will devastate the team.

    these signings never work.

you have to get a pitcher as he is becoming good and that is impossible to predict not after he has been good for years.

we have pettitte and mussina making 27-29 million total and wan’t to replace them with one pitcher like sabathia for 25 million.

maybe sabathia is the right signing, tex also.

i just wish we can lower payroll to a respectable level and not 250 million dollars.

  189. Tom October 27th, 2008 at 10:53 am

This whole idea that Hughes is worthless is unfounded. Keith Law said as late September that He’d much rather have Hughes than Joey Votto:

The point about Hughes is mute…since Cashman didn’t execute the deal for Santana…his wagon is hitched to him…and he isn’t going to trade him for Votto, Loney, Kemp, Holliday…etc, when he could have had the best pitcher in baseball last year!

Second, I believe Hughes will still be a very good pitcher in this league…and I hope for the Yankees…but you have to admit that the luster is off the chip…and you would be selling low if you trade him now

From Sherman’s piece yestrday. Some quotes from scouts in Zona. Guess it’s always in the eyes of the beholder:

“It is not just that two of his four starts in the Arizona Fall League have been poor, including Friday night’s Rising Stars showcase game. But scouts who have watched him in the AFL say Hughes’ delivery, command and array of stuff have not been impressive.

He started the Rising Stars game and permitted four runs (one earned) in three innings, allowing two homers and walking two. One scout who has seen multiple starts in the AFL by Hughes offered this report from the Rising Stars game:

“His velocity was fine. He threw some at 93-94 (mph), but mostly he was in the low 90s, but the problem was that they were straight. He gave up two bombs and even the outs were mostly hard hit. He couldn’t command his fastball to the corners at all. Only about half his curves were good and only about one in four were in the strike zone. He is working to add that changeup (to use against lefties), threw three and all were up and out of the zone.

“I think the problem is that his elbow is too low so he is not commanding because he is not throwing downhill. His command stinks because his motion stinks. For example, his curve has good rotation and break, but I think because of that delivery it breaks early and so hitters pick it up.”

There were many reasons that Yankees GM Brian Cashman advised against making a Santana deal last season, notably having to give up prospects and award Santana a record contract. But central to his thinking was that he did not want to surrender Hughes, whom he has envisioned being a cost-effective, homegrown, top-of-the-rotation stalwart.

But Hughes has not been able to stay consistently healthy, and this season when he did pitch it was not particularly well: 0-4, 6.62 ERA in the majors; 1-0, 5.90 ERA in six Triple-A starts; and now the AFL issues.”

    Yanks 2010:

    mentioned this trade offer yesterday:

Hughes, Veras, Ramirez, Colin Curtis. In exchange, for Holliday.

a knowledgable person on this board, said the offer was overpaying. Maybe you right. Maybe not. It have everything to do with the value the Rockies place on Hughes.

far as IPK goes. I don’t disagree.

the yankees do not need a corner outfielder with terrible defense.

they made a huge mistake in trading for nady, marte when tabata, karsens, olendorf should of been used to fix real problems like first base, centerfield, pitching and catching.

if the yankees used them to fix just first base they could concentrate on pitching and centerfield,a much better position to be in.

worry about corner outfield spots after other needs are dealt with.

i think tabata, karsens, olendorf could of easilly gotten us mclouth not to mention the other player(s) involved in the trade.

that would of fixed centerfield for years.

yes nady allows us to let go of abraeu but the yankees need to fix problems and they didn’t come close to doing that in the tabata trade and could have.

please don’t write about the problems tabata was having,i don’t need to hear about them.

now we might need hughes and or cano to address these problems when we could of fixed them or 2 out of 3 of them without using hughes, cano or spending a ton of money to do so.

the idea is to get a good young player who is under control for a reasonable contract not 2 free agents who will walk unless they get paid big dollars.

the yankees failed miserably once again.

This whole idea that Hughes is worthless is unfounded. Keith Law said as late September that He’d much rather have Hughes than Joey Votto:

Sam (San Jose, CA): Is a Hughes for Votto trade fair? Who wins?

Keith Law: No, I’d much rather have Hughes

I put more stock in what Keith Law says over some chicken little poster on this blog everyday of the week and twice on Sundays.

    i agree.

can we use kennedy and lower prospects to fix first base, centerfield? do we give miranda a shot at first base?

he is tearing the cover off the ball.

can we use him to get a centerfielder or first baseman?

why didn’t we use tabata, olendorf, karsens to get mclouth, kemp or a good young first baseman, centerfielder, catcher, pitcher even if we added jackson, kennedy, etc?

it easily could of been done and fixed a real problem and had us going in the right direction.

instead we are sitting here with the same holes to fix.

tabata, kennedy, olendorf, karsens for votto, kemp or mclouth or something along those lines would of been the way to go.then we concentrate on pitching and one of centerfield and first base.

just imagine if we got kemp in the trade above and signed sabathia, tex, pettitte for a total of 56 million a year.the payroll would be around 180 million and we kept cano, hughes, melancon, jackson and the other top tier prospects.

when you trade tabata and others you have to fix a major problem.in the yankees case that is cf,fb,pitching and they failed to do so and should have.huge mistake.

    “tabata,kennedy,olendorf,karsens for votto,kemp or mclouth”

Those guys don’t gert you Votto, Kemp or McLouth. Only reason they got us Nady and Marte was that they were so close to free agency. Votto, Kemp and McLouth are under their teams control for several years each and would command more back.

The flaw in the plan…is that no one wants our young starters…the rockies don’t want to trade a perennial MVP candidate for a pitcher that can’t get through the AFL…

    ————————————————————

the problem is that the yankees don’t need a corner outfielder right now.

we need to trade prospects for a pitcher, centerfielder, first baseman.

the tabata trade should of been used for that.

kennedy, tabata, olendorf, maybe ajax, melancon to get a good young fb or centerfielder while keeping hughes, cano, coke, acevez.

small steps in the right direction.but now we still have the same problems.

nady and marte were not needed then and now.

i would much rather have kemp, mclouth, votto, first base or centerfield fixed for years and with a reasonable contract.

  197. bru October 27th, 2008 at 11:44 am

i heard the same thing from another scout that hughes elbow is too low and his mechanics were off.

the yankees need to take a look at this problem.

  198. Fredo Corleone October 27th, 2008 at 11:46 am

“i would much rather have kemp, mclouth, votto, first base or centerfield fixed for years and with a reasonable contract.’

So would everyone else. That’s why nobody is looking to move Vottos and Kemps, guys who have proven they can play at this level and are cost friendly for prospects who may or may not make it in the bigs.

  199. YANKS IN 2010 October 27th, 2008 at 11:49 am

    Fredo…exactly

Why would you trade known, cheap, young commodity X (Votto) for unknown, injured, and inconsisten commondity Y (Hughes)?

Making trades is about leverage…Hughes isn’t giving the Yanks any right now (assuming they even wished to trade him)

  200. bru October 27th, 2008 at 12:31 pm

i know it might take hughes with others added and i don’t know if i would do it but their has to be a trade that can be made, maybe not kennedy, tabata, karsens, olendorf for mclouth or votto but some smart trade.

the twins could have done better in the santanna trade but they didn’t.

there are bad trades all the time.maybe a player that is not big yet like Adam Jones ,Brian Anderson ,Cameron Maybin ,Chris Dickerson ,Chris Young .

the key is to get them at the right time like the rays did with garza.
