Sounds like a party, and wait Joe still fraternizes with the Yankees after he ripped us for missing the playoffs? Hey at least its for a good cause.
Nice to see the old gang get together again. Good luck to Joe Torre with his philantrophic efforts.
Has it been ten years. I guess I’m due for my ten year high school reunion. Time flies….
They should make the 2008 Yankees be waiters and bartenders for that event that night.
Al:
I’m curious, when did Torre “rip” the Yankees for not making the playoffs? I don’t believe he did.
Don’t make stuff up to fuel hatred of the guy
from the previous thread:
“Ed,
Oops. Not working today.
How about bold?
”
Mel – Bold is working. Disregard this message if its not working.
Pete –
when’s the next video chat?
Ed: Next week from the GM meetings
Pete: Nicee…thanks, can’t wait.
“Al:

Don’t make stuff up to fuel hatred of the guy”
I wouldn’t say ripped. But he did make remarks about how happy he was in LA and how his old team wasn’t doing so hot without him. It would have been classier if he gave a blanket response like “I wish them well” instead of commenting on his ex-teams status because it shouldn’t be any of his concern.
Ed,
Don’t think the bold is working either. I bolded my bold, but it’s not very bold.
Mel –
Most likely the site admins has blocked the html for today or something.
FYI. I could not inquire on the SafeAtHome website about tickets. There’s an apparent problem with the security certificate for the site.
It should be a wonderful night for a great cause. God bless Joe Torre for fighting the good fight.
I was very upset when Joe left because I felt like the fans and the players most importantly still adored him and wanted him to return. I know he had his bout with the Steinbrenners but it seems as if hes let that relationship sully his memories of NY where for the most part everyone loved the guy.
Joe Torre didn’t rip us… Frank Torre made those “The Yankees are fishing while Joe is in the NLCS” comments.
The GM meetings are next week? Was it always this early?
“Joe Torre didn’t rip us… Frank Torre made those “The Yankees are fishing while Joe is in the NLCS†comments.”
Ok thanks for clearing that up. It seems I had the wrong Torre, Pete I apologize.
I’m really glad Joe is still doing these dinners in NY, it’s a great cause and I thought he might have switched them to LA now.
Anyway, speaking of El Duque, since he is a free agent now the Yankees need to sign him to a 1 day minor league deal so he can retire in pinstripes.
Al,
No problem. But you are right… everyone took shots at us from Torre’s clan (Bowa, Mattingly, Frank etc.). And you know Torre enjoyed that. The iconic Donnie Baseball taking shots at his own franchise.
The other guys are doing the talking on Torre’s behalf and hes loving it.
Ahh.. the reunion of the glory days.
And on a sad, sad related note: authorities believe they have found Jennifer Hudson’s nephew. That’s three more victims of domestic abuse.
Maybe Pete can bring a special guest in?! Please Pete!! Maybe the big G will be there, that is if the GM meetings are in Vegas.
“Al,

Yeah that what I find upsetting about it. Guys like Mattingly are dissing the Yanks a team that made him who he was. I just find it so treasonous.
“They should make the 2008 Yankees be waiters and bartenders for that event that night.”
This is a great idea.
Bob Gibson was on the 1998 Yankees?
No wonder they were 125-50!
Any chance they can squeeze Hughes in there to have a little talk with Gibson?
Personally I have trouble believing that Torre “enjoyed” people taking shots at the Yankees, I wanted him replaced as badly as anyone but I just don’t buy that he’s a bitter guy.
However, you guys are right, many close to Torre did take shots, including NY media members who think he should soon qualify for sainthood. As annoying as that was, I was fine with it especially because I knew that once he had to manage in a close game, rather than just standing by as the suddenly inept Cubs inexplicably came up short for the 9th and 10th playoff game in a row, that those of us who wanted the Yankees to move on from the Torre era would be somewhat vindicated.
And he did indeed show his managerial shortcomings in the NLCS, but unfortunately no one seemed to want to call him on those like they wanted to call the Yankees out for “insulting” him with the richest contract in the game. It irks me that people want to credit him tenfold with all his success but give him a free pass for his failures.
wait, what did Mattingly say? I remember Bowa’s comments but this is the first I’ve heard of anything from Donnie.
“Any chance they can squeeze Hughes in there to have a little talk with Gibson?”
Heres Bob Gibson’s advice to Phil: “If he gets to close hit him, if he hits you hit him again. Most importantly son, if you see him leaning give him a close shave.”
Pete,
Are you going to both the GM and Winter meetings to bring us real news?
There won’t be any real news until mid-November… until then, just the usual “So and So doesn’t want to play in NY”, “Sources close to so and so wants to play for the Yankees”, “Yankees will break the bank for so and so”.
Adj. 1. treasonous – having the character of, or characteristic of, a traitor; “the faithless Benedict Arnold”; “a lying traitorous insurrectionist”
Why that lying traitorous insurrectionist Donnie baseball.
“Anyway, speaking of El Duque, since he is a free agent now the Yankees need to sign him to a 1 day minor league deal so he can retire in pinstripes.”
1 day? Hell if we whiff in the free agent market. Meet your 5th starter. THE DUKE. Best playoff pitcher ever. Yes sox fans. Better than blister boy.
S.o.S.27
He was the best playoff pitcher when he was in his forties….
“There won’t be any real news until mid-November… until then, just the usual “So and So doesn’t want to play in NYâ€, “Sources close to so and so wants to play for the Yankeesâ€, “Yankees will break the bank for so and soâ€.”
Sadly, this is true.

Don’t you remember when he tried to surrender yankee stadium to the Red Sox?
Tom,
Please explain? “Don’t you remember when he tried to surrender yankee stadium to the Red Sox?”
“He was the best playoff pitcher when he was in his forties….”
Yanks in 2010,
Nothing a new birth certificate cant fix. If he doesnt know where to go. Ask Tejada.
BBB;
It seems you are the one who is not giving Torre any credit. The cubs became suddenly inept? Seems like the Dodgers had nothing to do with the three wins they achieved.
And Why call out Torre for a getting beaten in the NLCS with a team that has not won a playoff series in 20 years?
If he was with the Yankees, yes. But with the Dodgers? No. That team is lucky to be in the playoffs all along.
Other than his recent bout as a traitorous insurrectionist, the worst I can remember concerning Donnie was when he and Dale Berra were arrested for tinkling in an alley.
Can’t wait to buy my ticket.
YAWN!
My prediction for tonight: Rays will come back with a vengeance or something and they will win the game.
I still think that the Phils end up winning it all.
GO RAYS!
A 7-year-old murdered? A gun shot wound to the head?
Times like this make me believe in the death penalty.
So who thinks the 98 yankees, all aged 10 years, could beat that 08 yankees? I do…
“GO RAYS!”
I cant get myself to root for someone in our division. Especially a team that played dirty against us this season. I would hate to hear rays fans come to this board next year bragging about their title and how its been a whole 8 years since we sniffed one. Bad enough the sox do.
GO PHILLS!! Lets get the offseason started already!!
Mel, it was a poor attempt at humor.
And I apologize.
Ben. Arnold= traitor who tried to give west point to British (Red Coats if you will).
Yewnork, Who would Jeter, Posada, Mo, and Andy play for?
Thought I would share this such an enjoyable column from Joe as always
http://joeposnanski.com/JoeBlog/2008/10/26/moyers-america/
Man, Homer Bush is really milking this whole “Yankee Alumnus” thing…
Tom it is a hypothetical. While I feel at this point the 08 yanks would have more talent, I also feel the 98 yanks would hit with RISP, despite most would be in their 40s.
“So who thinks the 98 yankees, all aged 10 years, could beat that 08 yankees? I do…”
Only in hamstring pulls.
S.O.S.
I totally support any fan rooting for any team, for any reason.
To my knowledge, one player on the Rays caused a problem. I couldn’t possibly turn against an entire team for something one of their players who isn’t even around did in a spring training game. If I were to turn against every team who had a player who did something dirty, I would probably be turning against most teams, including the Yankees for a few bush-league plays by one Alex Rodriguez.
That said, I have rooted for the Rays for many years now, mostly because of the way they had been maligned by all the big-mouth W-L or bust fans who treated them badly and contemptuously. I am totally thrilled for their success and would love them to jam it to every bigmouth who ever put them down.
That said, I believe, as I have continued to say, that the Phils will take the world series.
GO RAYS!
Who would the manager of the 08 team be? Player coach? I can see him benching Arod for Bettimet. Starting Rasner.
98 team wins.
We would need a rover behind first base for chuck knobloacks throws from second.
gayle –
Thanks for that link. It was a really entertaining piece.
“I totally support any fan rooting for any team, for any reason.”
Okay I lied. I can’t understand anyone rooting for the Sux!
Trish,
It wasnt just one player. You must have forgot the scuffle Duncan had. We will agree to disagree on this one.
Yankees don’t win in 1998 without Bob Gibson’s contributions.
S.O.S.
Yeah we will agree to disagree. I remember Duncan plowing into somebody. Is that the scuffle you mean? When Duncan took out Iwamura? As payback for someone named Eliot Johnson barreling into Cervelli? The famous Eliot Johnson, a spring training invitee who isn’t even with the Rays?
I guess you hate Baltimore for what happened to Tino Martinez? The Jays for what happened to Jeter? And for all the times that Clemens whacked Yankee hitters? Hate all of them too?
Oh well.
S.O.S. I have no difficulty with you not rooting for the Rays. You have your reasons. I feel differently is all. But it’s all good since the Sux are no longer in the postseason!
Don’t care who wins… just want it over as soon as possible, so GO PHILLY
Will also be nice to see the Mets reaction, they never respected the Phillies. Their players and broadcasters always acted as if they were the better team.
gayle,
Thanks for the link to the blog about the “craft lefty” Jamie Moyer. It’s an enjoyable read.
Now if only Moyer could pitch like Mike Mussina…
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I agree with S.o.S.
Can’t cheer for a division rival, especially the Sox and on a less evil level the Rays.
They’re a nice story, Maddon’s a good manager, but they’ve got some punks on that team. Not everyone, but you play with an edge when it’s you against the world.
If we did some of what they did, playing goon ball in spring training people would kill us. If our closer bitched about balls & strikes in the media we’d look like crybabies. Just because they went from worst to first doesn’t mean I HAVE to like them. And I’m tired of the media telling me so.
So ready for the book to close on this season. Please, Cole, Save our Souls.
There are days when the mental midgets just dominate this blog site…...Whenever the smart baseball bloggers are missing, CB,SJ,Randy,Pat M,Green Beret,Whozat etc. the level of the discussions go to new depths…....Torre never ripped the Yankees, so without doing any research one idiots writes that he did…Crazy stuff…This place is losing it’s credibility…Then there is always Stuart or Brandon who say the most insane things…Better get those guys back, and fast….
I still think Maddon looked the worst after that spring training incident. He could have handled things much better than he did, IMO… i realize he’s sticking up for a young player of his, but still…...
I’m rooting for the Rays to pull it out. I’ve always associated Philadelphia fans as a step below even Boston fans in terms of being rude, crude and obnoxious. They’ve taken it to another level against the Rays’ travelling party. One lionhearted Phillies fan actually threw mustard packs at Joe Maddon’s 9 year old grandaughter.
http://www.tampabay.com/sports/baseball/rays/article873330.ece
This year the Boston police surrounded Fenway and Commonwealth Ave with SWAT teams and cops in riot gear before Game 7. If the Phillies win tonight expect the Liberty Bell to more than cracked.
Maybe Maddon got tired of his kids being treated with total disrespect and figured that other teams “play hard” and he wasn’t going to publicly berate his players for playing hard. Who knows? And who knows what he said behind closed doors. Anyway, I never thought about it in terms of division rivals (except for the Sux) but more in terms of the AL and the NL (escept for the Sux). Hell the WEEI guys are rooting for the Rays!
But it matters not to me. As my dad would always tell us, you jig your way and I’ll jig mine. As long as none of us are riverdancing who cares????
Drive, I think I would have to root for anyone who stuck a stake in the heart of the craptown vampires!
“I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I agree with S.o.S.”
music to my ears. Thanks bff.
Saucy i agree. I think if he came out and said that those acts arent acceptable. That he would have a talk with the kid. Duncan doesnt retaliate.
Just passing through,
This blog is like any dynasty team. Yes sj,whozat,cb,hmmm,gb,fredo, are our backbone all stars. But you cant be successful without role players. We have very valuable role players in here that make it very well balanced. All i can say is you dont have to read the pinch hitters comments.Pavano.
just out of curiosity, can anyone attend? also, if one does attend, can one ask players for autographs?
It’s a real shame that Shane Spencer isn’t on that list of those expected to attend. I’ve always felt his September call -up was the cherry on top of a story-book season. I know he’s had his share of off the field problems since his days in pinstripes, but IMO he’ll always have a place in Yankee lore.
Wells? I thought he hated Torre.
Am I the only one wondering why TINO MARTINEZ isn’t in that lengthy list?
I guess Tino turned down the invite for various reasons. Im sure he was invited.
I, for one, am disappointed Kevin Brown was not invited. Hope he didn’t crush a wall after finding out.
I wish I could go to this event as its right up my ally. Too bad I could only afford about half that price without selling my soul.
I so wanna see Jeff Nelson in a suit.
See yourself as the Yankees. The Yankees consists largely of the guy (e.g. It works by allowing you to make the good fight faster and more accurately than you could do yourself.
