World Series Game 5: Rays at Phillies

Peter Abraham
October

RAYS
Iwamura 2B
Crawford LF
Upton CF
Pena 1B
Longoria 3B
Navarro C
Baldelli RF
Bartlett SS
Kazmir LHP

PHILLIES
Rollins SS
Werth RF
Utley 2B
Howard 1B
Burrell LF
Victorino CF
Feliz 3B
Ruiz C
Hamels LHP

Notes: A little lineup change for the Rays as Crawford moves up into the No. 2 spot. … The game is on Fox at 8 p.m., weather permitting. … The Phillies, of course, lead the Series 3-1 and can win their first title since 1980. The city of Philly has gone 25 years without a title of any kind. Hopefully Tyler Kepner doesn’t overturning cars on Broad Street if the Phils win.

Why do people celebrate like savages and destroy their own cities simply because their team wins a championship? I mean act like you’ve been there before.

I wasn’t born during the last Knicks championship, so maybe I’ll act up next time they when one, that is if I’m alive the next time they win. It could be decades. ;)

  2. trisha -DAVID SLEW THE FAUX-GOLIATH!

Methinks the Rays will take this game. Methinks the Phils will take the series.

And to reaffirm support anyway – GO RAYS!

    :D

  3. Alex

Not going to lie, i just wish this world series would end, i want the offseason action to begin!

  4. Tom

    Final score 5-3 Phillies.

beware of a phishing mission by some top-notch loser who is parading as the USO looking for people to donate phone cards. The email address looked pretty unofficial, so I called the USO to ask about it, and it is indeed a phishing mission. Of course, they make the site look like the USO site, and they solicit your credit-card information under the guise of having you donate money for a phone card.

I no longer ask how low people are willing to sink because when I do, I eventually find out that it’s lower than I ever imagine.

    Go Phillies!

Alas, a five page paper will prohibit me from watching the game, oh well, such is life.

  7. Tom

Rebecca, what’s the topic of the paper?

  8. Al from BK( Fit CC for pinstripes. This team is not far off.)

    4-2 Phillies.

    Repost:

    I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I agree with S.o.S.

Can’t cheer for a division rival, especially the Sox and on a less evil level the Rays.

They’re a nice story, Maddon’s a good manager, but they’ve got some punks on that team. Not everyone, but you play with an edge when it’s you against the world.

If we did some of what they did, playing goon ball in spring training people would kill us. If our closer bitched about balls & strikes in the media we’d look like crybabies. Just because they went from worst to first doesn’t mean I HAVE to like them. And I’m tired of the media telling me so.

So ready for the book to close on this season. Please, Cole, Save our Souls.

I’ll bet your paper is more exciting than the game. :)

I thought I’d enjoy watching a world series I didn’t care about. Well, I was wrong. It’s better than getting a tooth pulled, mind you, but I’d even prefer rooting for some one to lose to not caring either way.

  11. paulie

    Let’s go Yankees…clap clap clap

mel, my response to your post (I posted it below also)

    October 27th, 2008 at 5:42 pm

Maybe Maddon got tired of his kids being treated with total disrespect and figured that other teams “play hard” and he wasn’t going to publicly berate his players for playing hard. Who knows? And who knows what he said behind closed doors. Anyway, I never thought about it in terms of division rivals (except for the Sux) but more in terms of the AL and the NL (escept for the Sux). Hell the WEEI guys are rooting for the Rays!

But it matters not to me. As my dad would always tell us, you jig your way and I’ll jig mine. As long as none of us are riverdancing who cares????

    ;)

  13. Drive 4-5

Going to be a lovely night for the most important game of the baseball season. Temps in the 40’s and 25 mph winds.

I’m glad that Bud Selig, in his infite wisdom, has scheduled another WBC affair this year and ensures Game 7 of the 2009 World Series will be played on Nov 5.It’s going to be cccccolllldddd in the new Stadium that night!:)

  14. mel-Free Tacos on Tuesday

    trisha,

Of course I respect your opinion. I would never try to convince you of anything.

But from my POV, the Rays weren’t cute when they won the division and they won’t be cute when they contend next season.

They are just as dangerous, or more, than the Sox. Just without the history.

  15. Drive 4-5

    infite = infinite.

Infite is what Manny and Youkalis got into.

Saucy i agree. I think if he came out and said that those acts arent acceptable. That he would have a talk with the kid. Duncan doesnt retaliate.

    Just passing through,
This blog is like any dynasty team. Yes sj,whozat,cb,hmmm,gb,fredo, are our backbone all stars. But you cant be successful without role players. We have very valuable role players in here that make it very well balanced. All i can say is you dont have to read the pinch hitters comments.Pavano.

  20. Tom

I know she had her head lopped off.

    Rebecca,

    She was a whore!

Just kidding. Are you talking about the American divorcee who married the English prince?

  22. G. Love

The sooner this series ends, the faster we get to free agency and the off season building of the team.

    Go Phils. End it now.

  24. Doreen

I was rooting for the Rays. Now I’m just rooting for it to be over. Phillies are wack though. I understand the Met Fans contempt for them.

So the food is prepped, dishes clean, table set. Let’s fire up the stove and start cooking!

MLBTR reported a possible 4yr/100 mil offer to CC from the Brews? Don’t think that one’s got quite the distance.

I’m pulling for a NL all star win and a WS sweep. When is game 4 being played.

  35. Tom

Mel, I think there’s a two week window after the WS when teams and players have to decide.

  36. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Staying to write the story

Tom: No. It’s more of a reaction to a biography written about her.

Ed: YEs, but it’s horribly inaccurate.

  37. aardvark

Its going to rain all night (not heavy, they’ll still play)

    so that favors the Rays

  38. S.o.S.27

    Whos the hero tonight?
    Ill go with Utley.

  39. Frontier

I can’t believe they cut Pat Ewing JR

Hate to say it, but Isiah is a better exec. than Walsh. Atleast he had an eye for talent.

  40. Drain003

    Hero tonight will be Price

He will get a 4 inning save. Maddon is taking no chances tonight.

  48. For $13 I'll be a Macadamia Nut

“MLBTR reported a possible 4yr/100 mil offer to CC from the Brews? Don’t think that one’s got quite the distance.”

I find it hard to believe that the Brewers would go that high per year for CC, as it would kill them in any other moves they need to make. They would have to trade some players away who stand to earn more, as well as not having other starting pitching good enough to help take some pressure off CC. They also couldn’t abuse CC as they did this year with all those short starts in a row, as it could kill their committment.

The dollars per might be OK, but lack of support and having one player take up more than a quarter of their payroll would kill them. Their payroll would have to jump up to 90 – 100 million to do that and I really don’t see it happening.

I think its a pipe dream for the Brewers to really look to do that.

  49. mel-Free Tacos on Tuesday

    Tom,

Almost got a D-league team there. George Karl will probably be available soon to coach them. :(

nonetheless, it is a token offer. Milwaukee knows full well, it will take much more.

  54. Sevendust

Atleast our ace Joba was closer to the speed limit than Viz was :)

  55. Celerino Sanchez

“Hate to say it, but Isiah is a better exec. than Walsh. Atleast he had an eye for talent.”

Like overpaying for players no one wanted like Jerome James and Jared Jeffries? Please.

  56. Left Coast

To be honest, if a West Coast team doesn’t make a competitive bid for CC, I could see him taking that Milwaukee deal.

And if he does, I commend him for it and not wasting our time just to drive up the price and fool himself into wanting to pitch in NY if he truly doesn’t want to.

  57. Bronx Jeers

71 MPH seems to be the unlucky (or lucky) speed to drive these days.

You’re not supposed to speed (or drive) when you’re drunk.

At least Joba didn’t fail a field test like Viz.

  58. For $13 I'll be a Macadamia Nut

Vinny, I am not so sure that the offer is even going to be given by the Brewers. If CC were accept, which seems doubtful but you never know, it could cripple them if he were out for any period of time.

I think CC is looking for years as well so he can land somewhere to call “home”. Players of his level start looking at legacy at this point in his career and look to have a team they can be associated with.

  59. Jerzz

MIL would NEVER be able to field a competitive team with CC taking that much payroll. They’d have to get rid of Fielder or Hardy alone just to do it. Sheets is gone anyway. They still have no bullpen. It required another choke from the Mets for them to even make the playoffs. How are going to fix their other weaknesses?

Very bad business decision for them to do that.

  60. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Staying to write the story

That article just quotes the original USA Today quote -

“I told him, ‘How’s $250 million going to look in New York?’ ” says Pirates infielder Doug Mientkiewicz, who played for the Yankees in 2007. “He told me, ‘I’m not going to go there.’ I said, ‘Trust me, dude, you’ll love it there.’ He could handle pitching in New York. He could handle pitching on Mars.”

Why does FOX insist on playing the Rocky theme at every commercial break? I get it already, the Phillies are in the World Series. They did the same think in the LCS when they played “I Love LA” every commercial break. It’s so annoying in its repetitiveness — just give it a rest already.

    To the Knicks fan:

A quick heads up for all of our New York readers. The NBA and Kia Motors are ringing in the new season in style, putting on a tipoff extravaganza in NYC’s Union Square tomorrow, Tuesday Oct 28th from 7am to 7pm.

It should be a lot of fun, and the price is right – free.

They’re going all out, bringing in a host of former Knicks greats and a few member of the current squad. Some big names for all you old-school Kicks heads will be around, including Spike Lee, John Starks, Charles Smith and Clyde Frazier.

They’re actually building a full-size basketball court on an elevated platform (taking 12 hours to put together) and an 8’ x 10′ video wall and a live broadcast ESPN 1050 Radio with Michael Kay.

For those of us who walk by Union Square every day, that’s pretty hard to imagine, so it’ll be interesting to see how they fit it all in there.

Players and celebrities will be there signing autographs and participating in basketball challenges. Attendees will get a chance to play on the basketball court, win prizes and meet their favorite players.

And best of all, your favorite NBA bloggers here at ETB will be in attendance – just try and pick us out of the crowd.

    Times of appearances:
    7 – 11am:
Spike Lee, Kareem Abdul Jabaar and Scottie Pippen

    12 – 3 (TBA) pm:
John Starks, Charles Smith, Cal Ramsey, Kym Hampton
Kenny Walker, Clyde Frazier, Knicks City Dancers

    4 – 6 pm:
David Lee, Nate Robinson, Malik Rose, Danilo Gallinari
Maddie the Mascot (in Knicks jersey)

  107. trisha -DAVID SLEW THE FAUX-GOLIATH!

    OT-

I remember a professor in College giving us some lyrics to a song about Ann Boleyn. I just remembered a few of the words and looked it up. Here’s the song!

In the tower of London, large as life, the ghost of Anne Boleyn walks they declare.
Poor Anne Boleyn was once King Henry’s wife until he made the headsman bob her hair.
Ah, yes, he did her wrong long years ago and she comes up at night to tell him so,

    Chorus:
With her head tucked underneath her arm she walks the bloody tower,
With her head tucked underneath her arm at the midnight hour.

She comes to haunt King Henry. She means giving him what for. Gadzooks, she’s going to tell him off. She’s feeling very sore,
And just in case the headsman wants to give her an encore, she’s has her head tucked underneath her arm.

    (Chorus)

The sentries think that it’s a football that she carries in and when they had a few they shout, “Is Army going to win?”
They think that it’s Red Grange instead of poor old Ann Boleyn with her head tucked underneath her arm.

Sometimes gay King Henry gives a spread for all his pals and gals and ghostly crew.
The headsman carves the joint and cuts the bread then in comes Anne Boleyn to queer the do.

I came in a short while ago and so didn’t see the beginning of the game. But I did just hear either Buck or McCarver say Kazmir was not happy about two pitches that led to the runs in the first inning.

So here is my take. IF Kazmir did indeed get screwed on those pitches, the baseball gods will see that the score is somehow evened and the Rays will make up ground. IF he didn’t get screwed, well then all bets are off!

If there is justice, the Rays will get out of this inning unscathed. It is just wrong for an umpire to get it so wrong and cause runs to be scored that shouldn’t score and a pitcher to be pulled from a game for walks that weren’t really walks. Especially in the world series, especially in the potential last game of the world series.

I know this will never happen for economic reasons, but just the same I have thought for a long time that it would make sense to knock off about 12 games from the regular season.

It may sound like heresy but wouldn’t 150 games be enough?

Starting around the first of April for some ballparks means the same type of conditions tonight and even snow in some cases.

  154. Mark in Tampa

Another option, but the Yanks and other cold-weather teams would have to start on the road every year for at least the first 3 or 4 series. Good way to start every year in the hole when you are on the road against the Angels to start every season.

  155. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Staying to write the story

The best options for shortening the season are either eliminating one playoff series or removing interleague play.

I’d go with the latter if I had to choose.

  207. trisha -DAVID SLEW THE FAUX-GOLIATH!

So is the general feeling here win at all costs as opposed to win fairly? The biggest joke here is that Kazmir actually pitched a much better game than Hamels and only poor officiating gave the Phils any runs. Wonder how you all would be feeling right now if the ump didn’t blow all those calls against Kazmir and the game was called with the Phillies losing. You’d be crying up a storm that you wanted it to go on.

  208. BBB (just say no to selling low on Cano)

  210. GreenBeret7

The only way they would move the schedule back to a 154 game schedule is to end inter-legue play, contract at least four teams and the players on current contracts get docked 8 games worth of pay until their contracts end….in other words…it ain’t happening.

  211. Doreen

    Trisha -

The pitches were close enough to be called strikes, but were not. They weren’t hideously out of the strike zone. Plus, Victorino did have to get a hit to get the runs in; the runs didn’t score on walks.

However, I agree with Angel. The officiating has not been good the entire series for either team. It’s been pretty spread around.

I don’t see how they resume this game tonight or tomorrow. The guy they interviewed said something about Wednesday. What? Did he mean resume the game Wednesday in TAMPA? Or resume the game Wednesday morning and then fly to Tampa and play at night? Or move the Tampa games back a day if necessary?

This is a mess. But I suppose a suspended game is better than a WS game ending as a rain-shortened game. I suppose.

They were all in the strike zone, and they were all called balls.

Maybe the Phils wouldn’t have had so many baserunners if the loser behind the plate called the game correctly!

I truly don’t care who wins the game as long as it is won fair and square. AGAIN – I think the Phils will take this world series. AGAIN – I will be happy for them because I think they are a great team.

    What a mess

  231. trisha -DAVID SLEW THE FAUX-GOLIATH!

“And the Phillies have been disrespected from the beginning of the series.”

Not a question. But then I had to hear the television freaks go on and on about how the Sux were going to come back like the Titans to defeat the Rays. Yes, it is annoying isn’t it.

  232. BBB (just say no to selling low on Cano)

“They actually sounded indignant about it taking away from the “running game”

Haha, my mouth literally dropped open when they said that. I thought I had unknowingly switched over to MNF and the announcers were crying about a dirty hit on LenDale White or something…

Anyway, I too am tired of the Rays slurping from FOX, although I did want the Phillies to win all along, I do even more so now. But I think they themselves would not want to clinch the WS on a rain shortened game. That would be cheap and they’re better than that.

I just don’t want to hear the national media using this as an excuse to bash Philly or, worse, as a rationale why baseball should be played in domes. MLB and Selig have only themselves to blame for scheduling a weeklong layoff between ALCS and WS. They certainly can’t steal one of the Phils’ home games from them so the Series will just hafta stay in Philly till things clear up. It would serve them right for it to have to be played in the snow!!
oh wait, that would shut down Tampa’s running game, and we can’t have that! It’s such a big part of what got them here!

  233. mel-Free Tacos on Tuesday

Of all the commissioners, Selig speaks the most defensively. He never accepts blame and when he does, he deflects in the same breath.

  234. Ed - looking forward to 2009

“The Rays checked out of their hotel in center-city Philadelphia, in anticipation of flying home after the game—and they can’t get back in, because the hotel is sold out.”

Maybe they should sleep over at the Phillies players house, or just sleep in the stadium??

  235. Angel - Tales told by idiots, fully of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Very true, Doreen. I mean the rain effects both teams equally, I can’t imagine its easy pitching in those conditions either.

Like someone pointed out, I fail to see the difference in weather between the time they called it and the beginning of the inning.

Honestly, I’m glad its tied in a way though. I can imagine how ballistic people might go if the game had of been called at the same point and the Rays hadn’t tied it. Can you imagine the headlines? Not exactly the way MLB would want a team to win a World Series, I’d imagine.

  236. thunderfangabe

haha the local news is talking about how phillies fans poured beer on the kids of rays players and the rays families dont wanna be here anymore!!!

Well they can’t stay at my house! :D

But if they’re really desperate, I know a particularly eccentric panhandler on 15th & Chestnut that might let them share his blanket for the night…

  238. Doreen

Well, the Rays should have watched the weather report!

Seriously, that’s a lousy turn of events. Scrambling all over the Philly area in awful weather. Shouldn’t their travel person have been working on that once the rain got really bad?

  239. Angel - Tales told by idiots, fully of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

“Of all the commissioners, Selig speaks the most defensively. He never accepts blame and when he does, he deflects in the same breath.”

Those two sentences pretty much succinctly sum up his entire tenure as Commissioner.

  240. Angel - Tales told by idiots, fully of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

    LOL BBB.

    You’re so damn thoughtful. :D

  242. trisha -DAVID SLEW THE FAUX-GOLIATH!

“haha the local news is talking about how phillies fans poured beer on the kids of rays players”

Uh that’s funny? I guess I am missing something here. Two teams battled their butts off all season and have made it to the big dance. Shouldn’t we want conditions to be right for both teams?

Someone dropped the ball here. They must have known about the weather report. Was it a real good idea for the Rays to check out of their rooms? MLB doesn’t seem to be big on plan B.

  243. thunderfangabe

if i were the rays, id stay far far far out of the city limits tonight haha

  244. thunderfangabe

im only laughing because i am not surprised…there is always some drama childish crap going on in this city

  245. Doreen

    Angel,

It was also interesting when McCarver pointed out that the Phillies had the advantage because the bats were wet, and the ball was dry. Perhaps the ball starts out dry from the umpire’s pocket, but unless it can go between raindrops, I would have to assume the ball is at least a little wet by the time it reaches the pitcher, and certainly by the time it reaches the catcher’s mitt from the pitcher’s hand. But, then again a wet ball is more of an advantage, no?

McCarver says the strangest things sometimes. :)

World Series will resume from the btm. of the 6th inning on FOX at 8 pm tomorrow. – Bud Selig

  248. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

We need a new commish.. this guy is a freaking joke. 6 inning he calls the game, he made us play through a monsoon in Kansas City !!!!

  249. thunderfangabe

its funny to me because i live here and it is typical of some of the stupid people that go to see the phillies

  250. Angel - Tales told by idiots, fully of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

I’ll bet they can find a Motel 6 in somewhere.

They might even let them have towels and soap if they ask really nicely.

  251. Ed - looking foward to 2009

    Brandon -

it’s a given that Selig hates the Yanks. He made them face the Pirates 2 years in a row during interleague. I figured the Yanks should had faced the Brewers since Boston faced them last year but didn’t faced the Pirates.

  252. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

My god I feel really bad for the Phillies fan they sat through that whole crap and have to go to work or school w/ an IDK what happened last night. What a moron ! FIRE SELIG !

  253. Angel - Tales told by idiots, fully of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Haha, Doreen. The ludicrousness of Tim McCarver is almost comforting. If he started to any make sense I’d be wondering what kind of PED’s he was on, or be outside waiting for the meteor that was going to hit any minute.

Even Joba couldn’t throw the ball hard enough so it would miss all the raindrops and stay dry from pitch to bat!!

  254. trisha -DAVID SLEW THE FAUX-GOLIATH!

Then there was that ridiculous game we had to play in Baltimore if you remember. Wasn’t there a hurricane or something and we still had to start it and the Yankees couldn’t get out of Baltimore, or something like that? I know it was an horrendous situation, whatever it was.

  255. Ed - looking foward to 2009

    Brandon -

don’t forget the infamous All-Star game at Miller Park. Selig had to STOP the game while it was TIED because it was going on for too long.

  256. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

trisha it really makes no sense they had stupidity in thier thoughts here. It’s the World Series cut the baby crap they should have played at worse the game would have ended 10 mins. ago !

  257. pat

So when the game re-starts, do they go with pitchers from the pen or starters?

  258. Ed - looking foward to 2009

    Trisha -

it was a isolated thunderstorm coming through. the O’s were complaining that the umpires stopped the game after the Yanks scored runs.

  259. Ed - looking foward to 2009

    Pat -

most likely the pen starts the game tomorrow.

  260. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

Anybody have a link to Philly sports radio I want to hear the fans tonight.

  261. mel-Free Tacos on Tuesday

lol. I think Maddon just got caught in a lie. He said he wasn’t aware that the league was not going to let the game be played in less than 9 innings. Then he admitted he was aware of something like that.

  262. trisha -DAVID SLEW THE FAUX-GOLIATH!

Ed, I must be thinking about a different game. I don’t remember all of the details just that the game never should have been started and I think the Yanks were not able to get out because there was some hurricane. It was a few seasons ago.

  263. Angel - Tales told by idiots, fully of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Yep – they were playing in Baltimore, Hurricane Isabel was approaching. They screwed Mike out of a win – thats why I remember, lol.

If it’s Brett Meyers game, I start him. I want to see him hit in the World Series.

Trisha – ignore my comment then.

  272. Angel - Tales told by idiots, fully of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

I looked it up. September 18th 2003, it was.

It was quite controversial at the time, even Jeter sounded pissed about it, lol.

“It’s like Christmas got pushed back to New Years. Which is okay, as long as Christmas comes”

Thanks Ed, Thunder, SA. I’m going to listen to the WIP link.

  275. Angel - Tales told by idiots, fully of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

“They’re canceling everything around here — schools are canceled, the government left, the Navy’s pulling out, and the Orioles and Yankees are playing baseball,” shortstop Derek Jeter said.

Proof that all it takes is making him play in a hurricane to bring the almost-feisty nature out in Jeter. :D

  276. trisha -DAVID SLEW THE FAUX-GOLIATH!

“I looked it up. September 18th 2003, it was.”

Wow and ho-ly! I didn’t realize it was that long ago!

  277. gayle

brandon wip is the station to listen to

  278. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

Phillies announcer sound pissed some yelling conspiracy, it should have been let known to both teams that this game was going to be played and finished tonight, now you have 44,000 plus fans pissed and feeling robbed of a World Series game. They sticked it out through the rain they weren’t leaving Selig goofed up big time his people said no rain today and Philly wants to know what radar was he watching, was this an effort to squeeze money off an extra game ? What was this and how could you suspend that game in the btm. of the 6th made no sense, expect alot of backlash.

  279. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and show CC the money (and food)!

This is my first time listening to WIP. One of the these guys sounds like a surfer dude for some reason.

Hey – last time I visited Philly – I stayed at a nice Econo Lodge just across the New Jersey border in Bellmawr… it’s got a Dunkin Donuts near by and a 7-11…

    Problem solved…
