Rain suspends World Series

Peter Abraham

7954a714776c2d99594d850b45799325-getty.jpgGame 5 of the World Series has been suspended by rain and will be picked up in the sixth inning later today … or Wednesday.

The weather is supposed to be worse in Philadelphia today and MLB has not announced a start time. It could be sometime in the evening. The teams will pick up in the bottom of the sixth inning with the Phillies hitting.

What choice does MLB have?

Logistically, it’s a circus for all involved. The Rays had checked out of their hotel today, knowing they would be going home one way or another. Their Philly hotel was sold out, so the entire travel party had to head to Delaware. If the Rays win Game 5, everybody will make their way to St. Petersburg.

Meanwhile, Fox finds itself in the position of televising a “game” that could last two and a half innings. This is all unprecedented.

But, hey, it’s just rain. There wasn’t earthquake or something worse. You wait around and wait for the rain to stop.

  1. BBB (just say no to selling low on Cano)

confused here…I thought they did announce a start time of 8 pm tomorrow?

WIP insinuating (w/o coming out and saying this) that this rain craziness may be the work of Billy Penn…I can’t say that thought didn’t cross my mind too, but we’ll see…

  2. Eric

Would they really have declared the Phillies the winner if the Rays hadn’t scored in the 6th? That would be pretty ridiculous.

  3. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

    We need a new commisioner.

  4. Art Vandelay

I guess A-Rod will have to opt out of his contract tomorrow.

The nearest hotel is in Delaware? I guess the Rays could only afford Motel6.

  5. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

    WIP radio

IDK if the link works but we should really listen to this.

“Meanwhile, Fox finds itself in the position of televising a “game” that could last two and a half innings. This is all unprecedented.”

Fox has televised a lot worse things.

  8. gayle

Art first as a delawarian by birth you are off base about hotels there the hotel Dupont is one of the best in the country remember they had to probably fine 40 plus hotel rooms on short notice.

The William Penn thing is pretty funny their is a whole billy Penn curse in Philly for Yeats upon years.

    “We need a new commisioner.”

    Careful what you wish for:

  11. Nick in SF

They should just stay at Joe Biden’s place. I hear it’s pretty swank.

  12. Mister Delaware

Right, Gayle. I live 20 blocks or so from Hotel Dupont and that was my first assumption when I read they were unable to get back into their hotel. Given the presumed traffic in center city right now, coming down 95 to DE might have been a quicker trip anyway (25 minutes or so). If it weren’t for the Obama rally on Super Bowl Sunday, I might (sadly) proclaim this the best Wilmington event of the year.

  13. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and show CC the money (and food)!

    LOL A caller:
“I have a ticket to the confused bus like everyone else.”

I might have to listen to WIP instead of WFAN tomorrow during work.

If the rain holds up long enough, Hamels could pitch if it’s his throwing day. :)

  15. Art Vandelay

No I meant that the Rays are a cheap team and that they would stay here: http://www.motel6.com/reservat.....x?num=0403.

Gayle, I love Senator Biden’s hairplugs by the way.

  16. Ed - looking foward to 2009

Cowabanga dude, where’s the pizza? lol

  17. Dave D

If they resume the game Wednesday, does that mean Hamels goes on 3 days rest in game 7 if it goes that far?

  18. Oddessy

Wow, WIP is eerie similar to WFAN.

Callers sound exactly the same lol

  19. Y26

Remember when they waited for us to tie that game against the Ravens before they suspended it in the top of the 8th?

We had already scored 2 runs and it was pouring and Jeter hit that 2 run double to give us a lead, then they called it.

  20. #9

“Wow, WIP is eerie similar to WFAN. Callers sound exactly the same lol”

Now we know what’s on the “speed-dial” at mental institutions.

  21. Ed - looking foward to 2009

Remember when they waited for us to tie that game against the Ravens before they suspended it in the top of the 8th?

    ————–

since when did the Ravens became a baseball team? lol

  22. Jeff

I’m sorry, but this is one thing I hate about baseball…the fact that a little rain makes the game impossible to play. Man up and play through the elements.

They do it in football. They do it in soccer. Heck, they do it in beach volleyball (where the only thing that stops play is lightning or fire or terrorist attacks.)

Unplayable surface? Grow up, you’re already wearing cleats.

  23. dan 771

    selig completely screwed this up.

watching him read from the rule book at the podium was comical

  24. Nick in SF

    Quoth Jeter: Nevermore.

  25. Wilson

Why were some guys on ESPN suggesting that they use starting pitchers when the game is resumed? It is a 3 inning game.

Why would TB burn Shields or Garza when they need them the following days?

And why in the world would Philly go to Myers/Moyer when they have Maddison/Romero/Lidge and a chance to win the WS?

  26. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

A few callers are in What da hell ? mode but are also in the hey 24 – 48 HRS if we win the World Series it is worth it. Take a couple of TUMS and relax  (I love this announcer)

  27. Doreen

The game could go into extra innings….

  28. Joe Monte

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10.....ref=sports

“Not even three years ago, Alexander set the single-season N.F.L. record for touchdowns, won the league’s Most Valuable Player award and helped lead the Seattle Seahawks to their first Super Bowl.”

This Greg Bishop guy forgot to google Super Bowl XL.

  29. Bronx Jeers

In terms of the effect of the butterfly flapping its wings…..

If Lidge doesn’t lose the ASG, this series could have been over.

Now I really hope this series goes back to Tampa.

“Less than three years ago, Shaun Alexander had it all: the league’s Most Valuable Player award, a Super Bowl ring, and the Madden cover. Then everything fell apart.”

This Greg Bishop guy forgot to google Super Bowl XL.

  31. LLIME

The Rays don’t have a hotel, they checked out already and they don’t have rooms for tonight.

Did Selig send the Rays to Atlantic City for the night?

  32. #9

Hang tight Yankee fans – we can wait an extra day for the CC signing.

  33. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

Hang tight Yankee fans – we can wait an extra day for the CC signing.

That’s a big reason I’m pissed. I want to rock my cap sideways the sooner the better.

  34. X-Mann

Well now the series has a lot of juice… going to be fascinating to see how game 5 is managed— elimination game for 1 team, WS clincher for the other with 2 innings left and he game tied. And if it ever gets back to Tampa, they’ll be a ton of controversy. Then does Hamels go in game 7 on short rest?

This rainout saved the WS, even if Philly ends up winning tomorrow night. There was some juice and drama.

  35. #9

“This rainout saved the WS, even if Philly ends up winning tomorrow night. There was some juice and drama.”

That’s what I was thinking… ratings have been poor and the most exciting part of the WS happened at 147a the other night… Selig took a page from Vince McMahon tonight.

  36. Ramon

Maddon has to use Price for 3 innings tomorrow.

  37. Bronx Jeers

    Could be worse folks.

We could be talking about this:

    http://farm1.static.flickr.com.....c6.jpg?v=0

    A lot worse.

  38. Bankrupt

Singletary shouldn’t have embarrassed Vernon Davis like that… like a kid who didn’t do his homework and had to sit in front of the class in a chair while facing the wall.

  39. NITRO

I’m not even a Philly sports fan and listening to WIP tonight, these hosts blow away most of the WFAN hosts.

  40. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !"

Yup and that’s very sad NITRO. These guys are atleast entertaining :(

They make great points too, the ticket stubs on the floor could be worth a fortune so if you guys live close to Philly check the ground that is a potential $2,000 investment.

  41. Oddessy

So is this Big Daddy Kain guy the Philly version of Steve Sommers?

  42. pat

I was just catching up on my emails from work that I didn’t get to today while NFL Prime Time was on as background noise when I heard a voice I recognized. I looked up at the TV and saw Derek Jeter doing a commercial for Clinical Strength Deodorant. Jeter is giving Peyton Manning a run for the money (literally and figuratively) in endorsement deals.

  43. AMS223

This sucks…I was pumped for the all new House on Fox at 8pm

  44. bigjf

AMS223, I was about to say the same exact thing. Fox hasn’t made any announcements regarding its precious shows. I can’t believe they allowed them to suspend that game. Just sit there in rain delay…you’ll get a window to play eventually. So Hamels would have had to come out of the game, that’s baseball…

  45. Mister Delaware

WIP gets very old, very quick; it probably just sounds decent because there is a major topic and lots of callers. A couple good hosts but I go with WFAN whenever I can get reception.

  46. thunderfangabe

the inch of snow if my car outside my office window makes me think they may have a problem starting the game tonight

  47. thunderfangabe

    on my car*

  48. saucY

not that i’m sticking up for him, but how could Selig have handled this better?

Calling the game before it even started ?

  49. trisha - DAVID SLEW THE FAUX-GOLIATH!

I have to say that I believe they did the best thing they could do under the circumstances, and that is suspend the game. When one team is potentially playing its last game in the world series, it does make sense to try to provide optimal circumstances. Optimal circumstances do not include playing in teaming rain or potentially resuming play at 1:00 a.m. That just is not fair to either team.

I can’t blame Selig for this. If you think that the chances for this happening were increased with all of the additional “between” time in the postseason, that’s one thing. But really, torrential rain can occur any time during the year. I don’t think that October corners the market.

  50. Mister Delaware

“Calling the game before it even started?”

I’d say yes, albeit in hindsight. What I really don’t get is why the Phillies didn’t push for this. I get the fans are excited, but the possibility of losing Hamels to a long delay or 3 inning rainout seems like a terrible risk to take.
