Brian Cashman is appearing at an event at Foley’s NY in Manhattan later on today and I’ll report back later after pressing him with a series of questions. Or something like that.
So check the blog later on for the latest from C-Money.
World Series start time will be 8:37 p.m. tomorrow.

Is it down by the river?
Tell C-Money that we need a new pitcher and a REAL 1B.
Andy, yes in a Van.
Tell him we can live w/ CC alone. Don’t worry about the big sticks so much but get younger in that OF, also ask him about Ryan Sweeney, James Loney, Hank Blalock and Jeremy Hermida
OK later Lohud I got to get back to work. 90210/(LAL/POR)
Go Blazers !!! (”The Next Big Thing” ARRIVES TONIGHT !)

feel free to let him know:

and kick the tires on the Matt Brothers (Matt Holliday and Matt Kemp)
Can’t wait to hear what he has to say. Hopefully, he lays out what some of his plans and FA targets are although I suspect he will be fairly tight lipped.
One thing that always bugged me about him was that nickname – it doesn’t quite fit. I mean, why would you refer to yourself as C-Money? Sounds like a much better nickname for a guy like Reggie.
I’d be interested in hearing Brian Cashman’s take on last year’s draft. What does he think the impact is (if any)of having 2 of his first 3 picks not sign a contract. Is there anyone who did get drafted in later rounds that he’s particularly excited about?
Welp, this has probably been mentioned here already but per Heyman via MLBTR, ‘the prevailing sentiment’ is that CC will in fact sign with the Yankees. This theory was supported by CC’s buddy Jimmy Rollins…and we know J-Roll’s predictions are usually correct!
woohoo, I’m excited, hope this happens! The WS can’t end soon enough although you could not pay me to watch the conclusion of Game 5 rather than the NBA debuts of Michael Beasley and Mario Chalmers and my Heat pwning you guys’ Knicks!
Here’s a link to pictures of ARod’s apartment and his Miami house.

“NBA debuts of Michael Beasley and Mario Chalmers and my Heat pwning you guys’ Knicks!”
back in ‘99 Heat V Knicks was worthy of trash talk. Now it’s just worthy of trash.
Still, a couple others think that Sabathia won’t let the difference of a few dollars — even possibly $20 million or more — keep him away from his native California, especially with the Angels and Dodgers seen as likely bidders. If there’s one guy who could turn down the loot, some see that person as Sabathia. But folks with that stance appear to be dwindling now.
Some estimates suggest that Sabathia could receive $160 million as a Yankee but maybe $120 million or so if he insisted on going home (or close to home). The small-market Brewers are planning to make a run, as well, but they still have to be seen as a long shot since they can offer neither the most money nor the chance to go home — though Sabathia did say he loved being a Brewer.

Tell Cashmoney we want Big CC
Question for Cashman:
“It’s been widely reported that Bill Smith offered the Yankees Johan Santana straight up for Kei Igawa but you vetoed the deal because you wouldn’t let Igawa keep the sunglasses without compensation and Smith wouldn’t pay. So my question is, do you have the crack brought to your office or do you go out to get it?”
Pete, you can use that verbatim if you’d like or you can rephrase it to ask it ‘your way’. I just need to know.
Ask him about Kate Smith and who are waiting for to die in order to get the music changed at the Stadium.
Drive,
This year’s draft was absolutely abysmal. No impact players at all. Brett Marshall (6th round pick) is the closest to it. Couple of other sleepers like Lassiter and Higoshaki, but hardly anything to make us change our stance on this draft.
I don’t think Cash will even attempt to put a positive spin on it without really reaching.
Ask Cashman where we’re getting our ace from when CC goes West and shuns us? Is it another ‘rebuilding’, 3rd place season?
Listening to Francesa-I miss Jeff Van Gundy.
I’ll never forget that Knicks playoff game with the fight and JVG grabbed Mourning’s leg and was then dragged around like a rag doll. I need to see video of that again.

because he spends a ton of the yankees money.
Cashman hardly ever says anything of note. He’ll probably just give some cosmetic quote about how Hughes is still an ace and how they are trying to rebuild and win and how its hard to do.
I wish he was like JP Ricarrdi and gives actual info about what he thinks of players and who he will pursue.
I just can’t get into the NBA season— the Knicks are going to be mediocre at best. No building blocks, nothing to get excited about.

he might turn down a few million dollars but he won’t turn down all that much.

they will be printing money this year.
i wouldn’t go over 6 yrs/144 million.
Backup question:
“Can I have your free taco?”
“back in ‘99 Heat V Knicks was worthy of trash talk. Now it’s just worthy of trash.”
Hey, speak for yourselves!
I don’t think the Heat will do much this year, especially with our big FA pickup sidelined for a while (though the 8th seed is possible) but it will be a fun building year for the fans to watch. The future is definitely bright, especially after the garbage of last season, though I try not to complain about that because it was the price we paid for a title and I’ll take it all day.

Heyman on WFAN
I would expect the same cloak and dagger act from Cash. Also I expect a “don’t expect much” reference at least once. Cash just loves to temper expectations and I expect him to leave Pete grasping at straws.
Heyman changing his story.
now he says Maccha is the favorite, for the Milwaukee manager.
other day, he said Brenley.
Cashman is the master of saying nothing, but doing it in 200 words.
So everyone in the NL East hates the Mets? Shocking.
Ha Ha, everyone hates the Mets.
Anybody else watching NBA opening night, I’m anxious to see Oden.
Heyman says Rollins who is close to CC said “CC is going to NY in the American league” on WFAN now.
per Heyman
- Yankees have discussed Holliday
- Matsui’s name have been attached to Seattle
- Damon’s name have been attached to Whitesox
Heyman just regurgitating his article from earlier:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.c.....index.html
Just offer CC the largest contract (by a fairly significant margin), and everything will take care of itself.
Glad to see Rollins offering some insight. Finally a guy who attached his name to a CC quote rather than the usual “CC wants to go West” anonymous quote.
Pop Quiz:
if Oden wasn’t injuried last season, who would had won ROTY? Oden or Durant? Durant was a given to win ROTY if Oden wasn’t injuried before the season began.

Just reading the MLBTR chat transcript from this afternoon, two interesting Yankee questions/comments in a row:
[Comment From Anthony]
What do you think of Matt Holliday for Robinson Cano, Melky Cabrerra and Phil Hughes???? The Yanks could then turn around and sign Orlando Hudson who is an upgrade on defense??? Obvious contigent if they could sign Holliday long term????
2:14 For one year of Holliday, I think the Rox would jump on it.
(Yikes….sure they’d jump, because it would be the dumbest thing ever. I would not even consider trading Cano or Hughes for anyone not named Adrian Gonzalez, who is more valuable than Holliday in my mind [yeah I said it]
…Just say no, Cash! Also, why does everyone think Cano’s defense is so bad?)
2:14 [Comment From John D]
love the live chats, Tim. keep em coming. no one seems to be able to answer this, but if the NYY don’t sign Tex, who plays 1B in 09?
2:15 There are a few options, but the FA market is really weak. So you’d expect a trade. Options being Prince Fielder (least likely), Adam LaRoche, maybe Derrek Lee or Paul Konerko.
(Yikes at these options. GIDPerrek Lee? Uh, no thanks, we already got a Derek who hearts getting doubled up. Konerko? Ick. LaRoche too much like the players we already have, streaky, poor in the 1st half, too one dimensional, etc. And I like Gonzalez better than Fielder, you’d think the rebuilding Padres would at least listen to offers on anyone. Lastly, anyone know if Overbay is available? He’s another option I like.)
Very interested in the Blazers.
A a Knicks fan, I don’t have much to cheer about this season, but there are some fascinating teams in the NBA this year.
what a shock.
sabathia will get 25 million a year for 7 years.if noone comes close he takes the money.
i love how francessa keeps saying to heyman that no way that the yankees don’t get sabathia.he keeps wanting heyman to reinforce his opinion.
sign sabathia, trade cano for a good young pitcher, sign an infielder.a fan in the stands can put up cano’s 2008 numbers.
“per Heyman
– Yankees have discussed Holliday
– Matsui’s name have been attached to Seattle
– Damon’s name have been attached to Whitesox”
Holliday will be a king’s ransom. besides king Felix and Ichiro, who else we want? Damon to the White Sox for who? Chris Getz would be a solid middle infield utilty player but he would be the Sox’s 2B man.

same here. No FA outfielders on the horizon. And a 2010 outfield of Gardner/Jackson/Nady, does not excite me.
“sign sabathia, trade cano for a good young pitcher, sign an infielder.a fan in the stands can put up cano’s 2008 numbers.”
Yes because it was the worst year of his career. Not many 2B’s can put up his 07 numbers .300/19/97
“Heyman says Rollins who is close to CC said “CC is going to NY in the American league†on WFAN now.”
What!?? Im tired of over loading our team with dh’s and wannabe first basemans. Cash just tell C.C. that he can take batting practice with the team but can ONLY pitch in games. O.k. maybe pinch hit for a Molina or Gardner in late innings occasionally.
per Heyman
– Yankees have discussed Holliday
– Matsui’s name have been attached to Seattle
– Damon’s name have been attached to Whitesox
__________________________
Why doesn’t Heyman think before he speaks?
adrian gonzalez would be awesome in ny,i wouldn’t give up cano, hughes and more for him though.miranda might work out at first base.not sure i like him against lefties.
give it a shot.i would listen to offers on cano.
if the yankees can get a good young pitcher combined with kennedy and maybe one more prospect while keeping hughes i might do it.
i can see the yankees trading kennedy and some other lower prospects but hesitant about giving up hughes, ajax, montero, etc…….
Every time I hear another Matt Holliday to the Yankees rumor, I die a little bit inside.
The White Sox have long liked Damon if I’m not mistaken, but who could they give us in return?
– Yankees have discussed Holliday
– Matsui’s name have been attached to Seattle

damon for a. ramirez…yeah right
lol Yanks 2010, I was thinking Danks. Both are equally unrealistic. I certainly don’t want Konkero and Cash better not even mull that idea!!
“i love how francessa keeps saying to heyman that no way that the yankees don’t get sabathia.he keeps wanting heyman to reinforce his opinion.”
I like how when a big free agent hits the market all the so called experts end up fitting those players in pinstripes. It really worked well in the past. Beltron(the bernie admirer)and Santana(money aint a thing)for example.
This year its Teix and C.C. Odds are they go elsewhere. Saying they would like to play for the Yankees. Gets them an instant raise everytime.

Good D, decent bat…too bad he wasn’t lefty
“Why would Seattle want Matsui? Whose contract do they need to shed?”
All i can think of is Ichiro. No not a straight up deal. But iv read in the past that Matsui and Ichiro dont get along. With the friction that was in the Seattle clubhouse this year. Where someone came out and said that he was going to knock Ichiro out(not exactly sure of the exact words). That would be my guess. If that the case. I have one word to say. WELCOME.
SoS, I know what you mean about the annoyingness of every big name FA being auto-fitted for pinstripes by the talking heads, but don’t you think we could and would have had either Beltran and/or Santana if we had wanted them? I know Beltran wanted to come here and Santana certainly would have too if the money were right. Cash just didn’t want to surrender the combo of $$ and talent for Johan but with CC it is only money and I think he’s inclined to spend what it takes.
no way cc goes anywhere but the yankees.
they wan’t him too bad and will justify the signing by 89 million off the books,a minimum of 26 million more off the books after next year not including nady, marte and others.
Would you guys do a deal that sends Damon for one of their pitchers? Vasquez and a young player? Thats assuming we dont land any big free agents. Back of our rotation.
I’d like to see them fleece Seattle for Brandon Morrow personally (what u think of that “Bru”, there is the type of guy you are lookign for…)
“I was thinking Danks. Both are equally unrealistic. I certainly don’t want Konkero and Cash better not even mull that idea!!”
Damon for Swisher looks more realistic to be honest.

I would first of all sign CC and look into Burnett. Of course everyone is saying Burnett wants to go to the Orioles but they are the worst team in the division and the Yankees would likely offer the same if not more for him. Cano is our only young hitter giving up on him would not be would not be wise I’d rather see if I could get anything for Hughes/IPK/etc. thats only if we sign 2 FA pitchers however.
maybe the right thing to do is sign sabathia, tex, pettitte and try to trade a lesser poackage for a decent centerfielder.
i just wish we can try to trade for a pitcher, maybe danks or floyd.we can give the white sox damon, kennedy and someone else.
“– Yankees have discussed Holliday

Isn’t Seattle’s owner some Japanese billionaire?
-Damon was linked to ChiSox last year too (Crede?). I wouldn’t be surprised if their GM wanted Damon for CF.
“Would you guys do a deal that sends Damon for one of their pitchers? Vasquez and a young player? Thats assuming we dont land any big free agents. Back of our rotation.”
I like Damon but he is part of the log-jame between DH and LF. If I could get a young reliever or give Vazquez another go around as a 4-5 then I’d do it. He was terrible here in 04 but he strikes out a ton of guys and he is good enough for the back of the rotation.
Would not want Vazquez back here in any deal. Buerhle? Maybe, as a back of the rotation guy, but not as the centerpiece pitcher of our offseason.
Don’t want Swisher.
Trading Cano would be a monumental blunder, it would be like trading Bernie in his 3rd or 4th year. We would regret it for 10 years!!

i am just affraid that hughes will turn into a good pitcher?
what about cf and fb????
Question: when they finally resume the game in the bottom of the 6th, will they the suspend beer sales in the 7th?
BBB,
I know in the twelveth hour Beltron wanted to go to the Yankees for a discount. But i think the Yankees are getting annoined at players using them to jack the price up. Same goes for Santana. I think the Yanks were fed up with Minny having them have a bidding war with Boston. Money has never been a thing for us. But i believe they are tired of being the bus stop for the players BIG contracts. We always seem to over pay. Time for that to change. Our product should sell itself. Tradition, new stadium, winner, greatest fans.

will admit, skeptical at the idea of the Mariners ever moving their franchise player. If they were to however, Ichiro would be perfect. And yes, i would drive Robby Cano to the airport and let him pick the CD’s to listen to, on the way.
Actually, Yanks 2010, maybe you are right that Konerko wouldn’t be so bad. I was about to say he doesn’t get on base enough for my tastes, but then neither does Overbay and I like him as a potential trade target. But we’d have to pay a surcharge on Overbay for trading in the division, plus he is just another lefty. In the end though it depends how much longer Konerko is signed for.
I’d actually forgotten all about Swisher. If they want to give us to him for Damon I would probably do that.
****him to us for Damon****

I’ve been tooting that horn for weeks…I would give up Cano and A-Jax for him….
the only problem is what is the incentive for SD…he is signed for a couple of more years at a decent salary?
I would trade Cano for Adrian in a NY minute. He’s the most underrated player in the game, IMO.
But the Padres would never do that. It would have to be Cano and Hughes I bet, and that would make me very uneasy.
not signing beltran was a huge mistake.
his contract would be a bargain now.
the yankees have had problems in centerfield since.
it would have cost them no prospects.
Vazquez? You mean the guy that was practically run out of town on a rail a few seasons ago?
I wish they’d held on to him in the first place, but why re-visit it now?
SD actually does have 2-3 prospects to put at first….none of which are on the same level as A-Gonz
But he would be great in the middle of the lineup with A-Rod…can’t I dream….
No on swisher. I dont believe that we would be able to land Buerhle.
Nick,
No they wont stop serving alchohol. The beer venders will have breathilizer tests for anyone purchasing. Qualifications. Test results Under 1 and half. Have another.
Damon to the Chisox? I’d want LH reliever Matt Thornton and maybe a minor league OF prospect. I’d love John Danks, but that ain’t happening
Matsui, Melky, Kennedy, Edwar and Wright for Ichiro and Washburn? Mariners save $ 12 M next year and get some pieces for the future. They also get out from under Ichiro’s contract for the future.
Yanks get a # 5 starter for one year, a great though older player who can play any OF spot.
Make any sense at all?
As for Matt Holliday I remember Gammons once saying a top scout told him Holliday would be tremendous in NYC because he hits the ball very well to the opposite (right) field.
imagine ichiro patrolling center for us i would love to have ichiro in center but i wonder wat we have to give up for him
“Question: when they finally resume the game in the bottom of the 6th, will they the suspend beer sales in the 7th?”
Selig is checking his little rule book as we speak and will let us know.
The Beltran non-signing pains my soul even more than the Sheffield signing/Vlad non-signing, I think. Although it is close either way.

you wan’t to trade cano for a 35 year old old man who hit 6 home runs and 42 rbi’s in 686 at bats? are you insane??
absolutely terrible idea.
86:
more like Cano, Matsui, and Melky/Gardner
I don’t think we get Holliday without ponying up Hughes.
If we end up trading Hughes for one season of Matt Holliday, rather than the player who shall not be named we could have traded him for and locked up before he hit free agency last year, it’s borderline shocking.
I’m guessing if Hughes is on the table for Holliday the deal is to negotiate an extension now before completing the deal…something Boras would never agree to EXCEPT with the economy in the toilet he might be willing to take guaranteed big money from the Yankees right now vs. what might be out there a year from now.
I don’t care how many prospect names you throw out of the Yankee flotsam, if Hughes isn’t in the deal I can’t imagine the Rockies trading Holliday to us.
As for trading Damon and/or Matsui, I’m all for it. My off season plan was to trade both and sign Manny in their stead to be part time OF/DH.
Doreen,
Vasquez would be an innings eater and is a strikeout pitcher. Im not saying to make him a 1 or a 2. But a backend guy wouldnt be a bad idea. Rather than blowing your money on n.l. average pitchers to fill that hole. Gives the kids time to get ready.
bru, not to mention the fact that the 6 HR/42 RBI/686 AB man in question is due $20MM per year through age 39! Yikes…
I would not want that cancer on this team anyway.

I would trade Cano for Ichiro, at drop of a hat.
1) Ichiro is one of the greatest hitters, to ever play the game.
2) Ichiro is a ‘young’ 35 (FYI – biological age is not always dependent on your birth date)
3) I don’t like Cano
Is Eddy Curry the worst player in baseball?
Pete-
The most important question you can ask Cashman is, what does he expect the payroll maximum to be at, 180 million as has been reported? Luxury tax is 40% for the Yankees for every dollar over 162 million.
Also, how does he see the weakening economy affecting the Yankees ticket sales, especially skyboxes?
Just get CC then go from there.
I’m glad they are looking at unloading Damon, Matsui etc. and clearing up the DH. Don’t think Cashman will surrender what is necessary for Holliday but I will love it if he does.

numbers do not get much if any worse than his.
in a few years he will hit one hr and 3o rbi.
he had a extremely high amount of at bats and also barely scored 100 runs.

I liked Vazquez the first time around. I really liked him. I thought he got a raw deal. He was adjusting to the league. He did fairly well most of the season. I thought he would be great the following season. I never understood why they got rid of him. But they (and the fans) didn’t have patience with him the first go-round. It just doesn’t seem like a good idea to have him back now.
I wish they never let him go….
I’d like him better than Derek Lowe, though. I guess it would depend on how any deal worked out, and all the other ramifications.

I think that Hughes could have decent success as a mid rotation guy. I would not be afraid of him turning into a Cy Young type pitcher he doesn’t have the stuff for that. CF and 1B thats actually what I was referencing when I discussed trading Hughes. In regards to first I think Tex is a lock to come here unless the Angels decide to blow out the market for him and CF that where Hughes/IPK/etc. come in I would look into ANY CF trade options Ryan Spilborghs, Matt Kemp, David Dejesus I would take a long hard look at these players.
Damon, Matsui have NTC’s.
Who leads off if Damon traded? G-d forbid Gardner.
Matsui has little value until he shows teams his legs are OK and that he can hit.
Cleveland has an excess in outfield and at 1st.
Ben Francisco and Ryan Garko for some of our relief pitching, which they need, and other minor league pitching?
Hal Steinbrenner, on how the Yankees’ new stadium plans have been impacted by the country’s economic struggles: “We’re fine with the progress we’ve made the last couple of months. With sales, luxury suites and premium seating. The important thing is, we realize what the fans are going through right now. We know what’s happening in the economy. The goal is to deliver the best bang for the buck in all aspects.”

One other thing – if Pettitte comes back and Mussina (or even if he doesn’t) comes back and Joba is the #5 starter, there will be back of the rotation guys. The Yankees really, really need to focus on a #1 or #2 guy (with Wang being the co-#1 or #2).

you wan’t to trade cano for a 35 year old old man who hit 6 home runs and 42 rbi’s in 686 at bats? are you insane?â€
I would trade Cano for Ichiro, at drop of a hat.
1) Ichiro is one of the greatest hitters, to ever play the game.
2) Ichiro is a ‘young’ 35 (FYI – biological age is not always dependent on your birth date)
3) I don’t like Cano
————————————————————
thank the lord you are not the gm of the yankees.
no team can afford 6 hr and 42 rbi in 686 at bats.
it doesn’t get any worse than that and he makes 20 million a year.
that is the dumbest idea i can remember in my lifetime especially knowing that the yankees can trade cano for more and the mariners would love to get rid of him.
i still can’t understand you’re logic.
If we cant get Holliday. How about going after Atkins for first base?
Damn Yankee Trader. Worse than terrible is pretty bad. Im thinking thats why he got called out by his coach. Solution. Have him pitch from April to August. We all know that he doesnt do well in the playoffs. He would have a sub 4 era. Problem solved.
“Did anyone see Vasquez in late September and in the playoffs. He was worse than horrible!”
Yes, he was awful. However he eats innings and would be a good 4-5. We would obviously not be depending on him in the playoffs since he will be the 4-5 starter. In the playoffs it would obviously be CC/Wang/Joba/Pettitte(who is still a great big game pitcher). If I could alleviate that clog at DH/LF I’d do it in a heartbeat.
Matsui and Damon have both said last season they would waive their NTCs if we asked them too and they were not wanted here anymore
“Yes. He uses that special(asian)cream to keep him young that they use to advertise a few years ago. Makes you 10 years youngerâ€
SOS 27 -
I know you didn’t mean any harm with that statement but I resent that comment. it’s just our genes that makes asians look young than their actual age.
We need an ace, we have plenty of bottom of the rotation starters. Adding more bottom of the rotation starters to our team doesn’t help us.
I’m really not thrilled about Burnett but we may not have a choice if we miss out on CC.
You know the Yankees will make a move, just for show. They will not go into next year with the same rotation we had this year.
Doreen,
I think some of Vasquez problems were the high expectations. He was a retaliation move from the Schilling trade. Some experts were saying that he was a better pick up. High expectations and adjusting to the league was his problem. This time it would be a low expectation pick up.

If we cant get Holliday. How about going after Atkins for first base?
Atkins came up as a 1st baseman and the Rockies have a replacement for him at third in Ian Stewart, but everyone on this blog doesn’t like his numbers away from Coors. If we could get Atkins and Ryan Spilborghs for center, that would be more economical, and allow the Yankees to spend their money on starting pitching.
Ed,
Thanks for knowing i wouldnt deliberately try to offend anyone. It was a commercial in the 90’s that was selling this cream. Bad joke. My bad.
“If we could get Atkins and Ryan Spilborghs for center,”
Ryan Spilborghs for center,…or left if Damon is infact traded.
Is Brad Penny worth a looksee if Dodgers don’t pick up his contract? What are their plans for Eric “homer” Milton and Victor “the wrong” Zambrano!!
SOS 27 -
No problem. its okay.
If Teixeira goes elsewhere, a Whie Sox deal of Damon for Paul Konerko could work.
Konerko is 3 years younger than Damon and signed through 2010 at $12M per. A Tino type glove at 1st base.
Id give Penny a shot. Whats the worse that can happen. DL? Just immagine Pavano had a 5 year deal instead of 4. When healthy. Hes dominant. I wouldnt think he would cost much. In years.
Penny would be a great signing
Did I read somebody mention Javy Vasquez as a possibility?
Here is my last memory of a Pinstriped Vasquez.

I don’t want another one.

Obviously this is only if we sign CC. If we miss out on CC then yes we need Burnett just to make a change.
“If Teixeira goes elsewhere, a Whie Sox deal of Damon for Paul Konerko could work.
Konerko is 3 years younger than Damon and signed through 2010 at $12M per. A Tino type glove at 1st base.”
Tex will be a Yankee. The Yanks offer will be very competitive and Tex has NY ties. Unless the Angels offer up that 10/200 that Boras has touted I see him in pinstripes. Konerko’s play has plummeted since he got his new contract I would stay away he is in his 30’s and not very athletic.
Al,
Dont be so sure on Tex. If he comes east. He could very well go to Baltimore(oriole fan). Im not sure if Delgado is a free agent. If so. They will be in the hunt. I still think he will be a Halo. They didnt give Kotchman up for a rent a player. They must have had some sort of agreement.
also don’t count the red sox out.
they wan’t to move youk to third, trade lowell.the only issue is the kid they have at first base in the minors who is supposed to be a monster.
All these guys will go for the money.
Tex will not take less to go to Baltimore
CC will not take less to go back to Milwaukee
If Cashman wants these players, all he has to do is write the largest check.
“If Teixeira goes elsewhere, a Whie Sox deal of Damon for Paul Konerko could work.

What ties does Teixeira have to NY? If we sign two quality free agent starters, you shouldn’t bet your house, that the Yankees will spend costly money on Teixeira also?
“We need an ace”
I guess no more Wang is an Ace discussions?
Cashman can not, under any circumstances, let Teixeria go to Boston.
How many times does he need to get schooled by Theo before he actually shows some pride ?
Trader -
Teix has said numerous times that NY is one of his favorite cities to come to. His sister and her husband live in this area so he said he visits here a lot during the off-season.
And you are right, they will not sign CC, Tex AND Burnett, but I could see them signing CC and Tex.
If we miss out on CC, Cashman will be in full damage control telling us how Wang is an ace.
Just like he already had a ready made excuse for Hughes’ embarrassing showing in the fall league. “He’s only supposed to get innings”. Sure.
“I guess no more Wang is an Ace discussions?”
we need another one.
we can be greedy.
“Trader –

Also Tex grew up watching the Yanks, specifically Don Mattingly was his role model. I doubt we get CC/Tex and AJ but it could happen they could all be signed for next year adding around 60 million to the salary but with 80+ million coming off we can technically afford this.
If my choices are Burnett or Teixeria, I’m taking Teixeria in a heartbeat. I know we need pitching but you have to look at value. Teix is a far superior investment than Burnett is.
X-Mann
Thanks for the info, but do you want Teixeira, a Boras client, for 5-7 years, when Jesus Montero might be our first baseman of the future?
Any guesses on Abreu, I-Rod, Marte all labled Type A?
talking about penny i saw a video that he got into a brawl
http://vids.myspace.com/index......d=45424903
Anyone else happy to see the Angels didn’t pick up Garrett Anderson’s option?
PBL: they didn’t ?
Hughes for Matt Halladay
If Don Mattingly was his role model, maybe the Dodgers trade Loney and sign Teixeira. Boras lives in LA. I’ll bet my subprime mortgage that Teixeira is not a lock for the Yankees!!
PBL,
Not really. His replacement will probably slug .700 against us like all Angels do.
http://www.yankeegm.blogspot.com/ afl numbers mean nothing
Dodgers are not signing Manny AND Teixeria.
And Loney isin’t going anywhere. He led that team in RBIs and is their only mature young player. They’d move Kemp or Ethier before they moved Loney.
Are you kidding? Jesus Montero?
We’re not going to sign a real 1B so we can accommodate a player in A-Ball who is 3-4 years away?
Legit teams do not operate like that. The Sox have Lars Anderson, who is their best prospect and is a 1B but that isin’t stopping them from showing interest in Teixeria.
I doubt Jesus Montero even enters Cashman’s thought process. Look at what happened with Tabata, Hughes, Cox, Duncan etc. Prospects are suspects.
How ridiculous, people want to shun Tex a bonified all star for Montero who needs at least another 2 years in the minors. Also LA will not trade Loney so they can sign Tex for 150 mil. What does Boras living in LA have to do with Tex? Does every FA sign with a team because their agent lives there that is a silly defense for your argument.
ARod’s bathroom looks like it was decorated by Stanley Kubrick.
5-7 year contracts are the norm these days. You are not going to get good players unless you go to these lengths.
That is baseball these days. Vernon Wells got 7 years. Zito for 7 years. Beltran got 7 years. A-Rod got 10 years. Miguel Cabrera got 8 years. Torri Hunter at age 33 got 5 years.
Large contracts are the name of the game in this day and age.
“Thanks for the info, but do you want Teixeira, a Boras client, for 5-7 years, when Jesus Montero might be our first baseman of the future?”
While we’re at it, let’s not sign C.C or A.J. because Dellin Betances or Zach Mcallister might be our ACE’s of the future
The Montero argument again?
Can we stop building our billion dollar franchise around an A-Ball catcher?
Teixeira will be 29 next season. If he were to take a 7 year deal, he would be as old as Jeter (35) and Abreu are next season.
Why even trade for Holliday?
I heard Abraham Almonte is tearing up Low A Charleston, we need to allot him a spot in the OF in 3 years.
“Here’s a link to pictures of ARod’s apartment and his Miami house.”
This may just be a matter of taste, but I thought that both places were horribly decorated. That being said, I’d take either one of them in a heartbeat, especially the NY place. I’d hire a different decorator though.
So Jesus Montero, Jeter, A-Rod, Posada, are all going to play 1st base for us?
Anyone else’s name we can throw into the hat?
I want Tex, but not for ten years. I don’t even want him for 7. 5 with 2 club option years is the most I’d do.
Laura,
That was my impression too. Looks like he won’t be on MTV Cribs anytime soon.
If we don’t sign Tex, it will be because he priced himself out years-wise, not because we are short on dollars and not because they are doing it to save a spot for a A-Ball catcher.
“Anyone else’s name we can throw into the hat?”
I get so frustrated that people want to just throw anybody at 1B. Have you people been watching these last few years? WE NEED A REAL 1B GUY!!! Sign Tex, bring back Minky. I don’t care. Just get someone who is a bonafide 1B.
“So Jesus Montero, Jeter, A-Rod, Posada, are all going to play 1st base for us?
Anyone else’s name we can throw into the hat?”
Brandon Laird?
“That was my impression too. Looks like he won’t be on MTV Cribs anytime soon.”
LOL! Doesn’t look like it.
Cashman’s first priority (after CC obviously) should be to find a REAL 1B.
Someone who can hit and field. Not a platoon player like Miranda, not a butcher like Betemit, not a catcher like Posada.
Trade for one if you don’t want Tex. Stop using it as a 2nd DH for inferior players who can’t field or as an automatic out for a defensive player (Doug M, Andy Phillips).
Konerko is rumored to the Angels Plan B if they don’t get Tex:
“Mark Gonzalez of the Chicago Tribune writes: “The Angels will need a first baseman if they can’t re-sign free agent Mark Teixeira. Paul Konerko came close to signing with the Angels after the 2005 season and is friendly with Angels manager Mike Scioscia dating to their days in the Dodgers organization.â€
Konerko has two years left on his contract and no-trade rights, according to Gonzalez.
Whatever bad blood the Angels’ fans may have with the White Sox after the 2005 ALCS (Remember A.J. Pierzynski?), the front offices seem to get along well. The Orlando Cabrera/Jon Garland trade last year was worked out with relative ease.”
Figgins in return gives the Sox a lead off hitter and a 3B.
Laura
His old decorator quit about 3 months ago.
A very large village is missing its idiot. His name is Bud Selig. If there’s a more clueless, pathetic individual alive, I’ve not met him/her.
i liked both of arod’s places…
but what do i know….
1. Sign CC and go after AJ.
2. Trade for Casey Kotchman in Atlanta – from what I’ve heard, he’s arbitration-eligible, and Braves may not want to pick that up. We could offer them pitching, something they lack. While we may scoff at IPK, say, his stuff may translate better in the NL. IPK or Jose Veras (everybody since Joe Torre supposedly raves over his “live arm”) – maybe Betances, whose described as “raw” – translation: nobody knows what’s going to happen with him, good or bad. But Kotchman is good defensively, and has proven he can hit in the AL.
3. Get Mike Cameron for CF. If Brett makes a case for himself, and relegates Cameron to the bench, then great.
My two cents.
First BH 90210, now the CW is thinking of remaking Melrose Place?
Oh brother.
I couldn’t care less about A-Rod’s digs. I care about him hitting well over .300 with 45 HR’s and 130 RBI.
everything i am reading is saying that cc and tex are yankees for sure.
Nothing is for sure right now
I’d like to see the Yankees pass on Teixeira, make sure they spend enough on Sabathia plus another pitcher, and trade a package with Robbie Cano Dontcha Know as the centerpiece to Colorado for Holliday. While his power numbers aren’t as high outside of Coors, he still has a high OBP.
All this talk about position players is really quite amusing. 1B and CF don’t really matter much when all you have for starting pitching is Wang and Joba (for who knows how many innings). I personally don’t want Pettitte back, but I’m told you need 5 starters in this game, so we may have to absorb another year of his decline. Counting on Hughes is ludicrous at this stage.
Thus, if the Yankees can’t sign at least two top starters, 2009 will resemble 2008. Plus, the aging line-up will be yet another year older.
Zman,
To further your point, if we don’t sign CC specifically, we are screwed for next year.
Signing Burnett does nothing for us. He is a question mark everytime he goes to the mound. As a secondary pitcher in addition to CC, then its fine. But if he is our big off-season signing and expected to elevate us ahead of the Rays/Sox, its not happening.

I don’t want another one.”
I did not click on this link because I was there, so I know what this is.
I would say that Torre made an inexplicably stupid decision that reflects more on him than on the pitcher, who never should have been brought into a bases-loaded situation with a lefty at the plate (this is Yankee Stadium and Damon in particular had torched Javy previously).
The smarter move – ANYTHING would have been smarter – would have been to START Javy over OMG, Kevin Brown????????!!!!!!!!!!!????
That said, I wouldn’t want Javy back here. And as for 2004, in general, I think the fact that Boston is now relegated to Florida Marlin-esque marginality – because they couldn’t win back to back championships – has taken the edge off of 2004 for me. Even though they’ve won two championships in four years, their competitive work therein will fade into obscurity the further we get away from it.
The fact is, the Yankees won four championships in five years, and were in the WS six times in eight years. Boston, in their infinite wannabe arrogance, thought they were somehow going to displace that. Fools
Cashman needs to stop living in a fantasy world where Pettitte is still in his 20s, Hughes is this can’t miss young phenom, and Joba can somehow be billed as an ‘ace’ despite his durability problems and lack of innings.
We need an ace, no questions about it.
1. $160M? $40M premium to lure CC here? You guys think that’s a good business decision?
2. Pat, we really need to end this series. Alex’s domiciles are actually very interesting.
3. Gayle, they were saying, Philly could win 4 games (house rules) and still lose the series.
4. Joe Bastardi, Phillie fan and area meterologist Joe Bastardi blasted Selig. Bastardi (hurricane expert) said to call the game at 5:00. After the debacle, he said, “Stupid is as stupid does.”
5. $160M?!?!
Next seasons free agents:
Victor Martinez
Carl Crawford
Cliff Lee
Justin Duchscherer
Hank Blalock
Adam LaRoche
just to name a few….

Pete, I’ve noticed you’ve really got to work on that grammar of yours. Much too many run on sentences. Tsk, tsk.
Showalter — I agree. And to Mel, no one said CC was worth that kind of money, but Cashman blew his chance last year on Santana. Now, what choice does he have? Showalter summed it up: Burnett is a nice #3 starter. That would leave us with three guys who are all roughly #3 starters — and one is a large question mark (Joba).
I personally would like to see what they could get for Hughes and Damon-or-Matsui. It still won’t bring a front-line starter. No, it isn’t pretty. This is what you get when you have an old team on the field combined with a GM who knows nothing about pitching.
ZMann,
That’s fine. But very knee-jerk. With the potential to blow up in our faces. Will underwriters even insure that much?
I don’t mind paying that if that’s the market price. But it’s not.
CC’s good, but he’s not Santana. He’s not Cy Young. He’s CC Sabathia. He’s not worth that much more than Wang. People argue you need an ace to lead you in the post-season. And they’re willing to give $23M+ to CC Sabathia. In my eyes, CC is a lefty Wang who throws more strikeouts and more CG than Wang.
The argument that SJ uses with Teixeira is the same one I use with CC. CC is good not great.
Yes, I understand the need. But a few years from now, we’ll look back and say, “Why did we do this?”
Whatever. I’m resigned to it. I can accept it. But I don’t like it.
bodhisattva ,
Sorry to hear you were there. I’m sure we all had the same bad vibes going into that game.
Kevin Brown……. that was a joke.
I still say we win that series and the susequent WS with Pettite.
Mel — They can patch together 1B (though it’s not ideal), but they cannot patch together a rotation. They tried that in ‘08. Not recommended as an ongoing strategy.
There are very few teams who, at this point, possess less starting pitching than the Yankees. The team just needs to decide how long they and the fan base will put up with a subpar starting staff. Management has made its bed, and right now it’s not a sturdy one. If they don’t land CC, then they’ll need two, maybe three, solid additions to the staff in order to contend. Burnett might be one. He’s far from the answer.
*And to clarify, $23M would be fine over a much shorter deal.
mel, You know how the Yankees are. They will not lose out on a player they want, they’ve made an existence giving out bad contracts. If they want CC and CC is amenable to coming East, he is basically going to name his price.
I really don’t care about dollars, just as long as its not longer than 7 years. Same with Teixeria.
ZMann,
Trust me, I know what it is, and would like to avoid a repeat.
But the idea that we have to get CC or we’re doomed is farcical.
I’m resistant to the CC man crush that’s prevalent here. I really wonder if it’s chicken or the egg here.
I’m all for improving the team, don’t get me wrong.
Art, Mister Delware and those of use who were discussing the nice hotel in Delaware below please find Je Maddon’s quote from the Associated Press on the Hotel Dupont. As I said last night it is one of the nicest hotels in the country
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The way manager Joe Maddon made it sound, his Tampa Bay Rays were pretty cozy down in Delaware.
They found a warm, comfortable hotel and enjoyed an unexpected day off with their families. Whenever the World Series finally resumes, that’ll be just fine with them.
“Quite frankly it’s one of the nicest hotels we’ve stayed in all year,” Maddon said Tuesday on a conference call. “If you’re going to have to have a postponement, you might as well stay here.”
Burnett would be the same low-quality FA signing that Cashman has made a living of pursuing.
32 years old, has only pitched 200 innings twice (both in contract years), has abysmal numbers outside of NY and BOS, injury prone, and never pitched up to his stuff.
Atleast we know CC is an ace. We know he is a horse. You have no idea game in and game out what you will get from Burnett. Cashman is foolish if he thinks Burnett is a consolation prize for missing out on CC, he is not.
Let’s assume the Yanks get CC for 20 mil/per year…
And he goes 17-9 w/ a 3.20 era….and Wang (arbitration eligible and free agent to be) goes 18-10 w/ a 3.35 era
Do we then have to pay Wang as much?
And then every position that we have fill in the future can name their price? Just so that the Yankees can have to privilege of their presence?
We are doomed if we don’t get CC, atleast going into the year. Even moreso if Mussina, our best pitcher from last season retires. Where are we getting the pitching from?
It will be another rebuilding year of 3rd place. A Wang-Pettitte-Joba-Hughes-Kennedy/Aceves rotation isin’t winning a thing in the AL East.
The worst thing they can do if we don’t get CC is panic and sign the erratic AJ Burnett or Sheets or somebody. Those guys are not putting us ahead of TB/BOS. The organization has painted themselves in a corner where its essentially CC or bust. Thats why you are even reading these various reports of us giving him an obscene contract.
mel,
I think CC is a different case. We need a 1B but you aren’t reading anything about us breaking the bank for Teixeria. The organization obviously views CC as a must-sign and holds him in a much higher regard.
Thats the price they paid for not getting Santana. CC has them dangling by a carrot. His agent knows it, the union knows it, our rivals know it.
Mel
That’s my basic point…its the reason why Kavika Mitchell, Reggie Torbor, and Gibril Wilson of the Giants all play on a different team in 08′
The Yanks should take a page out of the Giants playbook…and consult Jerry Reese on how to build a team
Casey Kotchman wouldn’t mind having spring training near home plus 3 road trips to visit the Rays.
Now, what does Atlanta want ?
Nothing is etched in stone with Teixeira. Kotchman has to be considered as an alternate plan.
http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/....._id=425773
“Let’s assume the Yanks get CC for 20 mil/per year…

Wang deserves 15-18 million not 20+ he is a good pitcher a definitive no. 2 NOT an Ace.
Wang deserves 15-18 million not 20+ he is a good pitcher a definitive no. 2 NOT an Ace.
____________________
I didnt say that Wang deserved the same money…but the fact that people want to “overpay” for CC at all costs, because we desperately need him…sets a bad precedent for future negotiations
Perhaps Wang is only deserving of 12-15, well you get my point
Yanks,
How can you even compare the NFL where there is a salary cap to baseball?
Jerry Reese has to adhere to a budget. The NFL draft also enables team to reload quickly. The Giants also let 3 fairly average players walk.
We’re not going after mediocrity, we’re going after one of the top pitchers in baseball.
Yanks in 2010,
Nobody here is actively promoting breaking the bank for CC… the Yankees themselves have already made their decision it looks like. We’re just digesting the information they Heyman/Olney give us.
It’s Heyman who threw out the $160 million figure and Olney who had the 40% more than the next highest team tidbit. It’s not like we’re talking about a pipe dream, the Yankees FO appear to want it just as badly as the fans. That’s all we’re going by.
hopefully the phillies rap it up tomorrow, i cant take anumore of this crappy world series
and of course once its done, all the real fun starts!
but because the red sux didnt make the world series, im happy camper
The fact is we didn’t trade for Johan Santana and now Cash is going to try and make-up for his boo-boo of holding onto Hughes by throwing a ton of money at CC.
vtred…I understand it’s all speculation…but the fact that the FO wants CC so bad that they are willing to overpay him is scary because its bad policy…its obviously good because it means we can get CC
I’m not advocating against it…just raising the issue that it’s bad business
Al you nailed it…
i don’t know why people are so shocked by heyman’s numbers
we have $88 million coming off the books, moving into the new stadium, coming off a non-playoff year. you had to be in denial if you didn’t think the yankees would go all out for CC. this is what the yankees are, always have been, always will be. cashman reiterated they are still big game hunters.
its their money, why should we care? its up to them to set the precedent for future transactions. if they want to overpay for everyone, then let them. why should it bother us? they know how to handle their money.
Al — I think you’ve got it right. But I agree with the other posters in that if the Yanks don’t get CC, it’s another third place finish for sure. Don’t forget, the team in the field is very long in the tooth.
This could have all been avoided if we had just traded for Santana. He is better than CC and will cost less too. He signed his extension for $138 mil. He also wanted to come to NY there wasn’t any of this West Coast/NL speculation with him. CC is also more likely to break down than Santana is.
you got it al,
im definately not a whiner who will take the whole johan trade to my grave but the truth is the truth
“they know how to handle their money”
Wolfman, based on recent years’ performance, I would wholeheartedly disagree with this statement.
Cashman knows we need an ace at all costs. It’s actually surprising that he appears to be much more proactive than the fans are. Some of the fans have the “It’s ok if we miss out on CC” stance whereas Cashman wants no part of that.
Read between the lines. Offering $160 million (or 30-40% more) to someone basically means that you need him at all costs and there is no alternative. That shows you how desperate Cash is and how important he feels CC is to us.
even if we do get CC, whose to say he’ll start off on the right track
if we overpay for CC and he pitches dominately than all praise the FO and C-money
if we overpay for CC and is arm isnt the same, and he becomes just another starter then everyone is going to break out the torches and the pitchforks and saying that they knew all along that we should have never signed him
IF is the biggest word in the dictionary,
and hopefully it works to our benefit whichever we choose
Z,
what i meant was they know how much to spend and how much they have available, unlike the fans who think they will cut the payroll by a large amount. they know how much money they make and how much they can spend on a player that would be considered acceptable.
as far as spending the money, i agree, they have shown they have no clue how to spend it wisely, but they do know how much they can afford.
its their money, why should we care? its up to them to set the precedent for future transactions. if they want to overpay for everyone, then let them. why should it bother us? they know how to handle their money.

It may be there money & their team…but we have to watch it
This year was terrible…and I don’t care what anyone says concerning injuries or else…we weren’t that close to making the playoffs

lol i seem to forget that we as fans have no say, which sometimes is a good thing lol
Also, let’s not be naive. Even if the Yankees land CC, they are not the favorites to win the AL East. Would they stand a fair chance? Yes, but they are still quite flawed. I’d say CC – Wang – Joba are about on par with Lester – Beckett – Matsuzaka. Not to mention how improved Tampa Bay is.
We as fans should be happy that our team recognizes they made a mistake with the Santana trade and are willing to go above and beyond for the best pitcher on the market.
Yank 2010,
i agree 100%. we were not a good team this year. the 89 wins was cosmetic. take out that 8 game win streak and we were basically a .500 team. that was the only run we ever made.
injury excuses are for losers. boston and tampa can use them too. they lost big pieces of their team too for chunks at a time. kazmir and dice-K eached missed a month. ortiz and crawford missed almost 2 months. lowell and beckett were nicked up all year.
cashman needs to recognize that we were a 3rd place team and fix it.

Cashman would be better served spending his money on depth, than on overpaying CC with an obsence contract

Al from BK( Fit CC for pinstripes. This team is not far off.)

The fact is we didn’t trade for Johan Santana and now Cash is going to try and make-up for his boo-boo of holding onto Hughes by throwing a ton of money at CC.

You mean that’s worse than a bunch of highly rated young talent and a ton of money?
“In my eyes, CC is a lefty Wang who throws more strikeouts and more CG than Wang”
I’d say you need to get those eyes checked. Sabathia is nothing like Wang.

bodhisattva ,
Sorry to hear you were there. I’m sure we all had the same bad vibes going into that game.
Kevin Brown……. that was a joke.
I still say we win that series and the susequent WS with Pettite.
Yeah, we had no lefty, which was fatal. But we might have pulled it out any way, if Torre had run on Wakefield and if Jorge had thrown the ball to the correct side of 2nd base. We didn’t have Giambi, either, who brought us back to life in ‘03 Game 7.
I had a feeling things were all wrong, though, when Rivera had to fly to Panama because of the swimming pool tragedy. Ah, well.
And you know, I’m not really sorry I was there. I was there for Game 7 in ‘03, too; all Yankee history means something to me, so I’ll endure the sad moments because it’s all part of the deeper fan experience. I’m just sorry I wasn’t there when Mercer won the Thurman game. Watched that one on TV.
