Jeter talks about, um, not much

Peter Abraham
October

Sports Illustrated.com has an interview today with Derek Jeter.

The guy is a master. He answered a bunch of questions without saying anything. Oh, wait, he likes Ms. Pac Man. He copped to that. But does he like Minka Kelly? Jeter wasn’t going there.

The media training folks at Nike know their stuff. Plus Jeter has more common sense and sense of self than the average player.

I’m tellin’ ya, Pete, the guy should give lessons!

Sure, as a fan, it’s a little frustrating. And sometimes, after losing games, it’s annoying. But in general, how can you argue with it? The guy has kept his nose clean in NYC while dating (super)models and actresses and keeping company with celebrity types. He’s living a great life AND staying out of trouble. The only time his “method” ever got him into tepid water, and it’s debatable, is when he said nothing when ARod was going through a rough patch with the fans.

Yet, that SI interview actually made me laugh – it was entertaining. It’s an art, and Jeter’s a master.

Jeter and Cashman are the master of saying nothing.

Except Jeter does it in two sentences and Cashman does it in two paragraphs.

  3. migames

he knows who he is gonna vote for….he said something

  4. grafxkid

I’d say: “oh, okay, fair enough, then you won’t mind if I ask Minka’s publicist for Minka’s phone # so I can date her, yes?!”

I agree with you. This is so true. Ha!

  6. you gotta have faith (MOOSE FOR PRESIDENT!)

    lol jeter is hysterical

I prefer a person who speaks softly and carries a big stick over a person who makes a lot of noise but is really just an empty barrel personally.

I swear I hit submit only once. Don’t know why my post showed up twice.

  10. Doreen

    Sure, raymagnetic, sure! (j/k)

  11. BBB (just say no to selling low on Cano)

Haha, Jeter is the lolz. Best question-dodging in the history of public figures.

I’m not surprised he doesnt play Guitar Hero since, according to Damon, he “hates rock music.” With how closemouthed Jeter himself is, that is probably the only piece of info. I will ever find out about him that actually breaks my heart…

  12. Stormrider6

Actually, the fact the Jeter hates rock music and doesn’t play Guitar Hero does break my heart… I was hoping he and Bernie would come over and jam with me.

  13. gayle

Whomever gave him media training in his early days is ure genius this is a guy who not only give interviews without saying anything while at the same time seeming to answer questions BUT also whenever he is interviewed on camera makes it a point to turn away from the interviewer at just the right time and look directly into the camera (ie talking to the people watching and making contact with them more than the interviewer when answering)

  14. you gotta have faith (MOOSE FOR PRESIDENT!)

    gayle,
seriously the person whom taught him all the tricks of the trade really needs a huge raise for all that they have done, they’ve made jeter’s life that much easier

  15. raymagnetic

    Doreen,

I can’t lie, I do like to see multiple posts by me which say the same thing. I’m sick that way I guess. :)

  16. BBB (just say no to selling low on Cano)

Stormrider, I can’t decide which is worse, hating rock music altogether as Jeter does, or loving vapid, cliche and soulless nu-metal (Sevendust et al) as Damon and many of the other guys on the team do.

I can only hope that Moose makes them all watch lots of VH1 Classic in the clubhouse.

  17. Mark in Tampa

I think Jeter learned his PR skills the same place as Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods. If you just close your eyes, you can barely tell which one of them is speaking.

  18. Doreen

    gayle -

You’re right. Jeter is a pro on camera. It might just be all the endorsements he does – he does get a lot of direction and he has a lot of experience looking into the camera.

  19. Stormrider6

BBB, maybe instead of banning junk food in the clubhouse Girardi should ban vapid, cliche and soulless nu-metal. I think that a steady diet of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest would keep the guys energized and ready to play just as well as M&Ms and Mountain Dew!

  20. Braintrust

    Arod needs Jeter’s PR people.

  21. YankeeDiva

LOL I’m not a big fan of rock music…..but I love Guitar Hero.

braintrust- it wouldn’t change anything…because then it would be see he’s trying to be like Jeter…lol

  22. Jeff

Jeter is his own person and figured it out on his own, al athletes have PR people whether its the teams PR people or their own its its up to the individual athlete to not say stupid things and be controversial… And being in that athletic bubble its amazing that he still manages to act this well in this market…

Nobody taught Jeter he just smartly figured it out on his own.

  23. Rubin-Bring back Bobby and The Big G!!!!

Haha, SI tried so hard to get Jeter to admit to a Minka Kelly relationship. Why doesnt he just own up to it? What else would he be doing in Texas? Visiting Pettitte? maybe. Visiting Roger? I dont think so.

I do wonder if Jeter got the kabbalah reference…

  24. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and show CC the money (and food)!

    That’s our Jetes!

  25. YankeesLuv

Jeter didn’t say much but it was a nice to hear from him.

    On the Nike comment Pete,
I don’t know, not saying anything or having a opinion won’t ever get you in trouble but it doesn’t make you a interesting person.

whoops forgot to finish my sentence above.

I don’t know, not saying anything or having a opinion won’t ever get you in trouble but it doesn’t make you a interesting person either.

I’d say that you have to give a lot of credit for the way that Jeter acts to those people sitting in the 5th row. (his parents for those who have not read the SI piece)
