“This is a popular story as well. Man, that Player X, he loves living in California. He loves his mom. He loves playing in the National League. It’s always nonsense. I’ve yet to find a player who left a substantial amount of money on the table.”

Here’s one – Greg Maddux, 1992. Yankees offered $34 million, the Braves offered $28. He could have gotten about 20% more money by going with the Yankees. Schuerholz even said later on that if he had heard what the Yankees were offering, he wouldn’t have bothered making the offer to Maddux.

Speaking of Ken Griffey Jr, he declined an offer from Seattle to go to the Reds, and left about $32 million on the table.

But, of course, these are more the exception.

I'd love to hear an agent say "Player X likes the Yankees...he just doesn't like-like them."

Good logic to stick with at this team of the year :

Believe half of what you hear and all of what you see. For a variety of reasons, too many people NEED to fuel rumors.

Trevor Hoffman signed a couple of consecutive (modestly) below-market contracts in order to stay in San Diego, but you're right, Pete. It's the exception, not the rule.
