A left-hander by the name of Carsten Charles Sabathia filed for free agency today.

The Yankees immediately loaded a Brinks Truck with bags of money and are are having it slowly circle the block where Sabathia lives until he agrees to sign. Hank Steinbrenner is at the wheel shouting out the window.

Other players filing today include Adam Dunn, Orlando Hudson, Mark Kotsay, Orlando Cabrera, Josh Fogg, David Weathers, Brian Fuentes, Livan Hernandez, Scott Podsednik, Arthur Rhodes, El Duque Hernandez, Keith Foulke, Tom Gordon and Trevor Hoffman.

    Hhaha good one Pete!!

  3. RalphieD (Cant' Wait for Spring Training) November 1st, 2008 at 6:04 pm

hopefully more than 1 truck wont be needed!

  4. Jeff November 1st, 2008 at 6:06 pm

Before every start Sabthia has for the Yankees, you just know Kay will call him by his full name, like Andrew Eugene Pettitte.

  5. Trevor November 1st, 2008 at 6:13 pm

He doesn’t need California. He’ll do just find living with his family in the Hampton’s.

  6. mel November 1st, 2008 at 6:18 pm

What time did he file? There was a spike on the Richter scale earlier in the day.

  7. Mark in Tampa November 1st, 2008 at 6:20 pm

Here’s hoping Arthur Rhodes goes to Boston or Tampa. That’s good hittin’.

  8. joe November 1st, 2008 at 6:31 pm

Tom Gordon- bring him back for a 1 year 12 mil contract we could use him as a set up man….no

  9. Dennis November 1st, 2008 at 6:50 pm

Give him euros maybe that will convince him. :)

    Best off season ever.

  12. Keith November 1st, 2008 at 6:56 pm

Whoever signs Manny Ramirez will need to understand that on the 1st and 15th of the month, he will not want a check deposit done to his account but will want an attache case with spendable cash money as part of the contract agreement.

  13. Fredo Corleone November 1st, 2008 at 6:59 pm

Isn’t all cash spendable??? Further, there’s no way Ramirez would know the meaning of “attache”.

  14. Onkel Bob November 1st, 2008 at 7:00 pm

ROFL – The image of Hank as a “NY truck driver” is priceless. You must have been holding on to that gem for a while.

  15. Knudsen November 1st, 2008 at 7:19 pm

Interesting quote from Newsday…Cash defers to Theo???

“It is interesting, though: A person in the Yankees’ loop said to me earlier today that they’re more likely to wind up with Manny than with Mark Teixeira. Makes some sense, when you think about the relative commitment in years. For now, though, I’m gonna guess that some other team overpays for Manny. I think Cashman will have serious reservations about this one, especially since Cashman and Theo Epstein have become more friendly in recent years.”

  16. mel November 1st, 2008 at 7:30 pm

What are you guys talking about? According to Ortiz/Simmons Manny would stuff his checks into a drawer, where they sat uncashed.

  17. Braintrust November 1st, 2008 at 7:47 pm

Does anyone have an idea of El Duque’s real age. Isn’t he 42 by now?

  18. Knudsen November 1st, 2008 at 7:50 pm

Mark Kotsay is a Cashman type FA signing for first base. Though new to the position, he demonstrated that he is more than competent to play the position. He is a grinder in the tradition of the team of the 90′s. This assumes that Tex will not be signed.

  19. mel November 1st, 2008 at 8:01 pm

O/T, did anyone see any good costumes?

    Two good ones.

    1. Roy Williams dressed up as Tatum Bell in a bellhop uni with a “My Name is Tatum Bell” tag. He wore a pair of undies on the outside of his pants with Rudi Johnson’s name on them.

    2. A guy made a shirt with U magnets painted on the front and back. He had little fuzzy chicks glued all over it. Chick Magnet. :)

  20. vinny-b (Matt Holliday ----- NOT Tex) November 1st, 2008 at 8:03 pm

is there a better football announcer then Brent Musburger?

hopefully, he will announce until he’s 90

  21. Bob November 1st, 2008 at 8:06 pm

There are 3 or 4 FA signing that I’d like to explore. CC, Manny, Teixeira and Burnett are the ones I’m looking at. 2 of the 4 would be a windfall. 1 of them would be just fine by me too.

Like I’ve said before, the only reason the Yankees didn’t make the playoffs was the injury to Wang. The Yankees scored less than 800 runs in ’08 but will rebound in 2009. If the pitching staff does what they are supposed to do, they will win 95 games. The toughest part of next year will be finding the guy who will replace those 20 wins Mussina got. The rest of the rotation will have no problem replicating those 2008 stats.

  22. vinny-b (Matt Holliday ----- NOT Tex) November 1st, 2008 at 8:06 pm

    lol

noticed the Tatum bell costume, on a highlight

  23. mel November 1st, 2008 at 8:09 pm

    Bob,

I think there will be an insurrection within the clubhouse if the Yankees fail to sign either CC or AJ.

We should know AJ’s decision by Monday.

  24. Alex November 1st, 2008 at 8:09 pm

El duque is in his 40s now, he got up there really fast… i remember when he came up in the late 90s, he looked younger than he was. I still think he does

  25. vinny-b (Matt Holliday ----- NOT Tex) November 1st, 2008 at 8:22 pm

    Alex:

yup. Will always remember El Duque. Him and Pettite, my 2 fave pitchers of all-time

  26. West side November 1st, 2008 at 8:22 pm

Blank check for Carstens Charles Sabathia

Do not let him escape. Give him the opportunity to DH if he wants. Give him the Clemens family-plan to go home in between starts, give him his own private office in the new stadium, give him private car service to the stadium and back every game

Do whatever it takes to get him. I would stop short of giving him part ownership of the team, but I would give him anything else.

  27. Alex November 1st, 2008 at 8:30 pm

Does anyone know when the release of MLB 2k9 is going to be?

  28. Jorge Tabata November 1st, 2008 at 8:30 pm

Only a matter of time before Hank buys his own Marlboro factory. Felix Lopez will likely be appointed as the supervisor.

  29. george November 1st, 2008 at 8:32 pm

El Duque was such an artist. and i don’t think he ever pitched a postseason game where he didn’t at least keep the Yanks in the game.

if there’s any chance he could still pitch, grab him for a long reliever/spot starter role. he’s a gamer.

  30. Braintrust November 1st, 2008 at 8:35 pm

I can’t see El Duque pitching in the AL East again. Probably the NL is the best place for him now. He’ll catch on somewhere.

    “Alex

Does anyone know when the release of MLB 2k9 is going to be?”

    likely, in late Feb/March.

if you like sims/realistic play, MLB The Show will be the title to own (ps2, ps3)

  32. Alex November 1st, 2008 at 8:48 pm

ahhh Vinny, i’m an Xbox guy :(

  33. Dirk from Rocklad November 1st, 2008 at 8:56 pm

Manny would leave his checks in a stack in his locker.

After CC and/ or Tex, one guy that I would like the Yankees go after– Trevor Hoffman

  34. vinny-b (Matt Holliday ----- NOT Tex) November 1st, 2008 at 9:02 pm

    alex:

understand. It is too bad the MLB series is first-party (sony) and not offered on Xbox.

the developers of the title work their tails off, every year. Have exchanged email and corresponded with them. They really work to please their fanbase. If any game convinces me to pick-up a ps3, it will be that one.

  35. Celerino Sanchez November 1st, 2008 at 9:14 pm

Trevor Hoffman? Is there a chance a Hall of Fame closer is gonna wanna set up for someone else? I don’t think so.

  36. jonnycat November 1st, 2008 at 9:17 pm

    Costumes?

Hands down, I saw the best costume ever last night on the subway here in NYC. Two guys in their early 20′s were dressed up as keith hernandez and don mattingly. Had the old uniforms with the names on the back and everything, mustaches. It was so cool I had to take a pic.

  37. Alex November 1st, 2008 at 9:20 pm

Vinny, you said they’ll have it for PS2? because i actually forgot that i have one. i’ll have to dust it off a bit, but i’m sure it still works fine

  38. Jorge (México) November 1st, 2008 at 9:21 pm

FA I’d like the Yanks to go for:

    1- C.C. Sabathia
    2- Mark Teixeira
    3- Ryan Dempster
    4- Brian Fuentes

And, yes. I’d also like Boston or Tampa to go for Arthur Rhodes and Julián Tavárez

  39. vinny-b (Matt Holliday ----- NOT Tex) November 1st, 2008 at 9:28 pm

yes. It will be offered on ps2.

btw the ps2 version of MLB 2008 was rock solid. I haven’t played the ps3 version yet.

  40. Alex November 1st, 2008 at 9:34 pm

awesome, i’ll totally get it for PS2 then… any idea who’s going to be on the covers for MLB the show… and 2k9?

  41. vinny-b (Matt Holliday ----- NOT Tex) November 1st, 2008 at 9:44 pm

    no. They’ve haven’t said yet.

if you ever need ‘inside’ information on these games, check the forums on this link: http://www.operationsports.com

you may need to register to view the forums. It is worth it tho. The developers for MLB/The Show series, post regularly. They often solicit requests (what elements to add to the game etc) and provide much info, before the game hits every year.

  42. Alex November 1st, 2008 at 10:00 pm

    vinny, that’s awesome… thanks

  43. pete's typewriter November 1st, 2008 at 10:03 pm

    CC……. The next Kevin Brown.

  44. Jeff NJ November 1st, 2008 at 10:06 pm

Another guy who filed today was Eric Hinske. He hit 20 HR’s this year playing a good 1B and OF. He’d be a good addition to the team.

  45. vinny-b (Matt Holliday ----- NOT Tex) November 1st, 2008 at 10:08 pm

    np, alex

let us know what you think of the game, when it hits.

  46. Alex November 1st, 2008 at 10:16 pm

    Pete’s typewriter..

The only thing wrong there, is Kevin Brown was old lol… CC is only 28 and imo more dominant

  47. jennifer November 1st, 2008 at 10:33 pm

Anyone else watching the Texas Tech game?

  48. vinny-b (Matt Holliday ----- NOT Tex) November 1st, 2008 at 10:33 pm

texas tech = best team in the country

  49. gayle November 1st, 2008 at 10:46 pm

Anyone take a look at the Elias rankings according to si.com??

If we had held onto LaTroy Hawkins for the rest of the year we would have gotten a sandwich pick as he made it to be a TYPE B free agent.

I guess that year in Colorado really helped him out where as any type of year Giambi has had didnt help us at all. It probably also doesnt helpthat they seem to lump DH’s in with the OG and 1st baseman so even if all he did was play DH he still wodl not have been ranked high but playing a lot at first base didnt help at all

  50. gayle November 1st, 2008 at 10:49 pm

Varitek is a type A because he plays the lousy position of catcher so he can still stink it up and be ranked in the top 20 per cent at his position.

Are these ranking solely based on offensive production??

  51. jennifer November 1st, 2008 at 11:00 pm

Fairy is a type A? I thought offense and defense are taken into account? I bet he’ll end up resigning with the soxs. What team in their right mind would sign him, and give up a first round pick?

  52. hornblower November 1st, 2008 at 11:03 pm

Conventional wisdom is often wrong. Using the media to hike the price is the agent’s way.
Keep your hands in your pockets and let the pros. do their work. The Rays, by the way, had no high priced free agents. There is a lesson there.

  53. Fredo Corleone November 1st, 2008 at 11:07 pm

“Fairy is a type A? I thought offense and defense are taken into account? I bet he’ll end up resigning with the soxs. What team in their right mind would sign him, and give up a first round pick?”

Agreed. That’s why I thought it was good that Pudge ended up a Type B. Now teams lose nothing by picking him up (and the Yankees would get a sandwich pick). If he were an A and someone would have to give up a pick, I’m not sure anyone would take him.

  54. Al from BK( CC watch in 2 weeks. Congrats Phillies.) November 1st, 2008 at 11:09 pm

A CC-Kevin Brown comparison is the most far-off thing I’ve ever heard. Kevin Brown was in his late 30′s and obviously in the twilight of his career, CC is 28 and the most dominant left-hander in the game IMO, not only is he not in his twilight years he is just now entering his prime. Whats not to like about the guy? Of course the “he’s fat” argument always springs forth, however he has not blown out both his knees taking PFP’s and to quote another hefty lefty “doesn’t have to run the ball to home-plate”. BTW Pete clever idea there, honestly with Hank it wouldn’t surprise me if he had Sinatra’s “New York, New York” on loop with a bull-horn in hand as well :)

  55. jennifer November 1st, 2008 at 11:20 pm

Someone said we can offer arbitration, and say there is an off chance that he accepts, if we cut him during st than we only owe for that period of time.

If this is true, why not offer arbitration?

  56. Fredo Corleone November 1st, 2008 at 11:24 pm

“Someone said we can offer arbitration, and say there is an off chance that he accepts, if we cut him during st than we only owe for that period of time.

If this is true, why not offer arbitration?”

Downside is that you’d have to keep that player on your 40 man roster until he is released.

  57. EricNS November 2nd, 2008 at 12:12 am

Is Carl Pavano a type F pick?

  58. S.A.-Looking forward to 2009 and show CC the money (and food)! November 2nd, 2008 at 10:04 am

    LOL Pete
