"Someone said we can offer arbitration, and say there is an off chance that he accepts, if we cut him during st than we only owe for that period of time.

If this is true, why not offer arbitration?"

Downside is that you'd have to keep that player on your 40 man roster until he is released.

A CC-Kevin Brown comparison is the most far-off thing I've ever heard. Kevin Brown was in his late 30's and obviously in the twilight of his career, CC is 28 and the most dominant left-hander in the game IMO, not only is he not in his twilight years he is just now entering his prime. Whats not to like about the guy? Of course the "he's fat" argument always springs forth, however he has not blown out both his knees taking PFP's and to quote another hefty lefty "doesn't have to run the ball to home-plate". BTW Pete clever idea there, honestly with Hank it wouldn't surprise me if he had Sinatra's "New York, New York" on loop with a bull-horn in hand as well :)

"Fairy is a type A? I thought offense and defense are taken into account? I bet he’ll end up resigning with the soxs. What team in their right mind would sign him, and give up a first round pick?"

Agreed. That's why I thought it was good that Pudge ended up a Type B. Now teams lose nothing by picking him up (and the Yankees would get a sandwich pick). If he were an A and someone would have to give up a pick, I'm not sure anyone would take him.

Conventional wisdom is often wrong. Using the media to hike the price is the agent's way.
Keep your hands in your pockets and let the pros. do their work. The Rays, by the way, had no high priced free agents. There is a lesson there.

Varitek is a type A because he plays the lousy position of catcher so he can still stink it up and be ranked in the top 20 per cent at his position.

Are these ranking solely based on offensive production??

Anyone take a look at the Elias rankings according to si.com??

If we had held onto LaTroy Hawkins for the rest of the year we would have gotten a sandwich pick as he made it to be a TYPE B free agent.

I guess that year in Colorado really helped him out where as any type of year Giambi has had didnt help us at all. It probably also doesnt helpthat they seem to lump DH's in with the OG and 1st baseman so even if all he did was play DH he still wodl not have been ranked high but playing a lot at first base didnt help at all
