Boras the star of this show

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Nov 03, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

These are the General Manager Meetings. But they really are the Scott Boras Meetings.

The gleaming headquarters building of the Scott Boras Corporation is in Newport Beach, about 18 miles away from here. Boras has several of the marquee free agents in this class including Mark Teixeira, Manny Ramirez, Derek Lowe, Pudge Rodriguez, Oliver Perez and Jason Varitek.

In other words, there is something for everybody.

Now keep in mind, there really are meetings at the General Manager Meetings. The GMs meet about assorted issues within the game. It was here last year that they started the process of mandating that base coaches wear helmets. It’s not all standing around the lobby coming up with trade ideas.

Tell them the fans think the idea of a nuetral site for the World Series stinks!

  2. mel November 3rd, 2008 at 12:38 pm

With all the Yankee monopoly money, there are so many permutations of what we can do.

My first thought is the Baltimore twins, Burnett/Teix.

But then CC, AJ, and a lesser 1B makes sense, too.

But then we kind of need Tex, unless we fill CF with a stick (presumably sacrificing defense).

So, in conclusion, the only way to go is CC, AJ, and Teixeira.

    :)

    from the previous thread:

    Vinny,

Nick was going to be healthly all season long 2 years ago. He had a streak since Opening Day till the last week of the season. it was that collision that ended his streak of being healthly when the season was about to be over in a few days.

  4. saucY November 3rd, 2008 at 12:39 pm

who are the clowns that like the idea of a neutral site world series?

Some interesting responses of GMs polled about some of the hot free agent baseball

  6. jennifer November 3rd, 2008 at 12:41 pm

Some “major” sports reports. Buster, Gammons et al. It is scary to think it could happen if they catch the ear of gm’s.

  7. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !" November 3rd, 2008 at 12:42 pm

    CC, AJ

Garko ? Blalock ? or a waived Nick Johnson ?

  8. jennifer November 3rd, 2008 at 12:43 pm

    pat

No idea answer to the first question, my guess c-money. Just being modest.

  9. mel November 3rd, 2008 at 12:45 pm

    saucY,

LOL. During the WS debacle, Woody Paige wrote about having it in Hawaii every year.

The one good thought he had was that players could play day ball, but could broadcast live in the almighty prime time slots.

In case you didn’t know, Paige writes for the Denver Post, so he was probably freezing his buns off when he scratched out the column.

  10. Ed - looking forward to 2009 November 3rd, 2008 at 12:46 pm

    Brandon,

I think Nick Johnson is a bench player at best now, since now he got to prove he’s 100% healthy.

  11. vinny-b (Matt Holliday ----- NOT Tex) November 3rd, 2008 at 12:49 pm

    Ed: I know.

and the idea of blaming the Mets, is an added bonus

  12. jennifer November 3rd, 2008 at 12:51 pm

Woody Page, needs to put down the peace pipe. How far would that be to have it played in Hawaii.

The games should be played in the two cities that made the world series, case closed end of story. All these idiot reporters, broadcasters really need to have their heads examined if they think any fans will go for this.

This morning on Mike and Mike, they said they were bombarded with emails saying how stupid and foolish the idea was.

  13. Ed - looking forward to 2009 November 3rd, 2008 at 12:52 pm

    Vinny -

    oh okay. cooool.

  14. vinny-b (Matt Holliday ----- NOT Tex) November 3rd, 2008 at 12:52 pm

Brandon: yup. He have been a excellent/big-money player.

Don’t know if anyone in the NBA, have a better nickname. His nickname put me in the mind of ’007 Live And Let Die’ (Mr. Big)

  15. mel November 3rd, 2008 at 12:53 pm

    Jennifer,

Page is a wacky guy anyway, I don’t think he was serious.

But heaven forbid if Minny should go deep in the playoffs after ’10.

  16. vinny-b (Matt Holliday ----- NOT Tex) November 3rd, 2008 at 12:54 pm

jennifer: I like Woody Paige. Tho, he looks to have smoked a few peace pipes, in his day

  17. vin November 3rd, 2008 at 12:55 pm

“who are the clowns that like the idea of a neutral site world series?”

The people who need to fill time on tv and in print are the only ones who like the neutral site concept. Covering sports is too big of an industry to only go over what happens on the field. Unfortunately.

    Was Johnson Waived? …

  20. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !" November 3rd, 2008 at 1:02 pm

Vinny-b I use to hate on Billups but watching him in a playoff series if your team is down or in a regular season big game, he delivers. He just does. Denver might make the NBA Finals.

  21. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !" November 3rd, 2008 at 1:03 pm

“The Yankees system posted a combined 485-348 record and .582 winning percentage, the best in baseball. Even better, each of those teams featured good young players on the rise. Unlike years past, the club is focused on cultivating its own farmhands rather than simply throwing dollars at aging free agents.”

    I love this part.

I know, whenever they’ve played my Suns, he always kills them

  23. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !" November 3rd, 2008 at 1:05 pm

Edwar Gonzalez has a little Matt Holiday and Jason Werth in him it’ll be interesting to see what they do w/ him.

  24. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !" November 3rd, 2008 at 1:07 pm

“I know, whenever they’ve played my Suns, he always kills them”

He’d always kill a running offense because he would use his back to the basket moves for his teammates, amazing if Steph could have been like Chauncey in commiting to his team we’d probably be a ECF instead of what my Knicks are today.

  25. S.o.S.27 -Offseason = Off topic discussion. My favorite. November 3rd, 2008 at 1:09 pm

I would sign Nick as a bench player. Im not convinced about signing AJ. If im going to risk signing an injury prone player. I would probably go after the cheaper(less money and years)Penny. But even then we would still be signing one of the FLORIDA CURSED pitchers.

  26. Tom November 3rd, 2008 at 1:10 pm

“Edwar Gonzalez has a little Matt Holiday and Jason Werth in him it’ll be interesting to see what they do w/ him”

Edwar Gonzalez is 25 years old and is in AA.

  27. mel November 3rd, 2008 at 1:14 pm

Just read something that might explain what Dumars might be thinking.

He might be sacrificing something this year, so that he can make big moves in the future. e.g. LeBron & Bosch. Together.

Everyone thinks they have a chance to land LeBron. There’s enough LeBrons to go around. Business LeBron, Little Bro LeBron, Gramps.

  28. pat November 3rd, 2008 at 1:14 pm

Brewers pick up the $10 million dollar option on CFer Mike Cameron.

  29. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !" November 3rd, 2008 at 1:15 pm

“Edwar Gonzalez is 25 years old and is in AA.”

What’s your point ? I said he has a little. Jason Werth didn’t become a legit player until he was 28, so where are we going here w/ this ?

  30. S.o.S.27 -Offseason = Off topic discussions. My favorite. November 3rd, 2008 at 1:17 pm

“Denver might make the NBA Finals.”

Did the Lakers,Celtics,Spurs,Jazz,Hornets,Rockets or Cavs move to Denver? Or did they reward the City of Denver to host the nba finals?

  31. mel November 3rd, 2008 at 1:20 pm

    pat,

Thanks for that. Over/under on the Cameron to the Yankees trade scenarios?

    Brandon,

Did you notice that every Yankee minor league team, except for the DSL Yankees 1, had a winning record?

  32. Tom November 3rd, 2008 at 1:23 pm

Brandon, when Werth was 25 he had an .OPS of .824-in the MLB. Werth became an everyday player at the age of 28.

Edwar Gonzalez is 25 and has yet to play above AA and has a career .OPS of .725. The only thing they have in common is that they play baseball.

I’m not going to ask how he compares to Holliday….

  33. Brian from PA November 3rd, 2008 at 1:25 pm

    who is Sabathia’s agent?

  34. mel November 3rd, 2008 at 1:28 pm

Brandon’s not that far off. The Nuggets have made a concerted effort to play defense this year.

They led the Lakers through 3 quarters, but just ran out of gas at then end of a back-to-back.

Carmelo actually sacrificed O playing D. Nene is better than people think. Add Billups & McDyess? Ouch.

  35. BBB November 3rd, 2008 at 1:29 pm

okay, this is how desperate I am for a big Yankee move, I was scrolling down the posts and saw this caption under a link to a Yankee news story:
    “Congrats to Jesus & Zack.”
….and automatically thought the Yanks just pulled off a blockbuster for DeJesus and Grienke. haha, whoops. At least someone in the media is finally admitting that we do in fact have a bright future though, rather than just spewing the “Yankees are too old” rhetoric without any mentions of the talent we have in the pipeline. So I guess I’ll take that acknowledgment as a consolation prize….something really needs to happen soon though! Pete, tell Cash the LoHud mafia is getting impatient over here! :)

  36. BBB November 3rd, 2008 at 1:33 pm

As far as the AI trade, I think it’s a terrible move for Denver. What happened to rebuilding? Billups is aging and has like 5 years left on his contract. Why do they want to hitch themselves to that wagon in exchange for one of the best scorers ever whose contract will be off their hands after this season?

And if they were trying to go all in this year and win it or at least get past the 1st round and wanted Billups for that reason, then why the hell did they trade Camby? I just don’t see how either Billups or McDyess is going to help them either long term or in the immediate future – there are still at least 5 teams in the West who are much better than them.

also, I’m pissed because I love AI and dont want to see him in a dirty Pistons uni dammit!!! uuuugh.

  37. pat November 3rd, 2008 at 1:36 pm

    mel

I would guess he was signed to be traded but not sure the Yankees would be willing to part with what the Brewers are looking for to get him. $10 million for Cameron as a salary dump is 1 thing. $10 million and viable prospects is another.

Sabathia has Legacy of Sports Agency (Greg Genske, Scott Parker and Co.) as his agents

  39. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !" November 3rd, 2008 at 1:38 pm

Melo plus Billups and JR Smith, think about it Denver was missing one thing, just one, a PG, and they are getting as much as I love A.I. a more clutch higher basketball IQ lockdown PG in Billups. They are going to be a problem in the West.

  40. miggs November 3rd, 2008 at 1:39 pm

I went to college with AI and I’ll tell you guys something, no one wants to win more than that guy. There’s no player with a bigger heart.

How adding a declining Chauncey Billups and a declining Antonio McDyess makes Denver better is a mystery to me.

If anything, I think Detroit gets some scoring they lacked last year. They already play enough defense, now with AI filling it up they become even more dangerous.

  41. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !" November 3rd, 2008 at 1:42 pm

miggs I’m one of A.I.’s biggest fans but big game give me Billups. Mr. Big Shot is a better PG than A.I.

  42. mel November 3rd, 2008 at 1:44 pm

It’ll be an interesting NBA season to occupy us while we wait for baseball.

There’s 3 top tier teams in each conference and a lot of parity after that.

Not a good time to be betting, unless you like to pick the upset.

  43. S.o.S.27 November 3rd, 2008 at 1:44 pm

    mel,
I dont think they are an aweful team. But losing Camby was huge. Also, Nene is good. The question is how long will he be on the court this year? He is a long dl stint waitin to happen.
The west is still loaded. Cant see how they jump over the power houses.

  44. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !" November 3rd, 2008 at 1:46 pm

They have Renaldo and Diawara and Kleiza, they’re a problem in the west and don’t forget a healthy K-Mart. (I love that guy)

  45. mel November 3rd, 2008 at 1:50 pm

    Brandon,

We can’t forget about Dallas, they may play themselves back into the picture.

    Brandon,

K-mart pulled something, left the game, came back in, but didn’t finish. Denver fans were wondering why Renaldo didn’t get in the game, especially when (?) was sucking it up.

Back to baseball. I noticed that Cody Ransom had some power at SWB, too. Are we in agreement that he opens the season as the utility infielder?

  46. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !" November 3rd, 2008 at 1:51 pm

Ahhh crap I just realized what Detroit just did, it’s not just Billups move ! they get rid off his 3 yr. extending contract, A.I.’s expires after this season, frees up space for LeBron or DWade. :(

  48. mel November 3rd, 2008 at 1:55 pm

Oops. The Dallas thing was for SoS.

And I forgot. The stupid Birdman was flying all over the court blocking shots and altering shots.

Like I said, they realized that the no-defense mindset was hurting them. They’re on a mission and the change of personnel is reflective of that.

  49. BBB November 3rd, 2008 at 1:57 pm

“The west is still loaded. Cant see how they jump over the power houses.”

That’s exactly why I don’t like the trade. I don’t deny that it makes them more well rounded than they were before, but it’s still not enough in the West, which makes it too big a risk to take to acquire an older guy they’ll now be stuck with for the next 4-5 years. It’s not like they acquired the missing piece in a core that will grow together for years to come. If they don’t win with Billups this year or next which I don’t think they will, then it’s a loss.

Great move for the Dirty Pistons on the other hand. Makes them very scary. *mutters profanities*

for lack of baseball news I am going to go ahead and make my Finals prediction. Heat in…
haha, no, not that much of a homer.
Rockets over the Dirty Pistons in 6. Go get em again Artest!!

  50. BBB November 3rd, 2008 at 1:58 pm

“I just realized what Detroit just did…..frees up space for DWade.”

I just threw up in my mouth a lil bit :(

  51. S.o.S.27 November 3rd, 2008 at 2:01 pm

“someone remind me why i was rooting for texas tech, and happy they won….. ”

And here i thought we were friends saucy. I root for your p.s. and you go root against the longhorns. Whats wrong with that picture? I still think Texas and P.S. will end up playing for the championship.

And yes A.I. will be a huge loss.

  52. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !" November 3rd, 2008 at 2:03 pm

The salary cap for Detroit after this move is at 34 million in 2009. Boy what a FA haul they are going to get in 09-10

  53. BBB November 3rd, 2008 at 2:03 pm

Brandon: Diawara is with the Heat now.

  54. mel November 3rd, 2008 at 2:04 pm

    It’s really a win-win for both teams.

The Nuggets went from being on the outside looking in, to a playoff team. They get some much needed veteran leadership. (The team was a total mess in the playoffs-too much immaturity and too many egos).

The Pistons get some pop for their offense. And financial flexibility. Not only LeBron & Wade, there’s a good class approaching FA, not to mention the evil one can opt out.

Word is that Dice will be bought out. My team’s only carrying 14 players. Hmmmm….

  55. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !" November 3rd, 2008 at 2:05 pm

The only player with an opt-out. The reigning MVP.

  58. Brandon (TEIX IS NOT WORTH IT, GET CC !)..."Don't trade Robi !" November 3rd, 2008 at 2:13 pm

Kobe would be retarded to opt. out his team has Andrew Bynum.

  59. mel November 3rd, 2008 at 2:16 pm

    Brandon,

    There’s *thought* that he’ll opt-out and re-work the deal.

  60. BBB November 3rd, 2008 at 2:28 pm

I can definitely appreciate the logic that this makes Denver a playoff team, but I think theyre still a low seed and a likely FRE. Which is not any different from what they were before except now they have 4 years of Mr Bigshot.

But anyway if we can all agree that DEN will make the playoffs, who gets left out in the cold now? If God is good it will be Dallas! But more likely the Warriors, unless Portland makes it then theyre both SOL.

  61. saucY November 3rd, 2008 at 2:42 pm

i knew i could count on you to respond, SOS :)

i guess like most logical college football fans (as well as ESPN analysts on Sunday morning) i thought penn state would move up with a Texas loss.

i’m still having a hard time figuring out how Alabama comes out of this unscathed, while PSU gets penalized during a bye week. okay, i guess they didn’t move in the rankings, but still.

Alabama beat who? fraud teams in Clemson and Georgia (who is still way too over-ranked)…

i’ve been upset since hearing yesterday that they’ll remain a #3. but i guess they have better odds of winning out than alabama or texas tech.

but if some 1 loss team jumps them in the rankings and grabs a spot in the national championship over them, LOOKOUT!!!!

  62. WangFan88 November 3rd, 2008 at 4:36 pm

Jason Varitek is a “marquee” free agent? Haha.
